 | | PRACTICAL DISCOURSES ON REGENERATION Philip Doddridge
"Practical Discourses on Regeneration are among the most vital wants of this age. Although for the last century much has been written on this great doctrine, nothing has fallen under our observation so popular, so plain, so scriptural, and so practical, as this production of Dr. Doddridge. The sermons were preached in 1741, during the period known as 'The Great Awakening' under the labors of Whitefield, Edwards, and others. And what was the GREAT DOCTRINE, which above all others was made prominent in the preaching of that time of God's power? What but this very Doctrine of REGENERATION, to the discussion of which these pages are so wisely and so warmly devoted." - J. Newton Brown, from Introductrion to 1854 edition
"The doctrine of the New Birth is one of the jewels in the crown of Christ's gospel. It is also our great protection against formalism which makes too much of sacraments and too little of heart religion. Excessive emphasis on the covenant and on Baptism are reappearing here and there as in the past. This fine work by Doddridge is a welcome reminder that without a spiritual rebirth no one is a true Christian". - Maurice Roberts
"Increasingly recognized as a significant figure of the eighteenth-century revival, Philip Doddridge played an important role in bringing renewal to English Congregationalism. In part this was because of his determination to work with evangelical, God-fearing men of differing ecclesial persuasions, men such as the Anglican Calvinist George Whitefield. In part, it was also due to the way he modelled true gospel preaching that was pre-eminently Christ-centred. The sermons in this new reprint serve as an excellent introduction to this kind of preaching--a type of preaching desperately needed today in North America."

 | | | | THE YOUNG LADY'S COUNSELOR The Sphere, Duties & Dangers of Young Women Rev. Daniel Wise
The importance of female culture and piety cannot be too highly stated, especially in a country whose institutions depend upon the virtue of its people. The maternal influence, much more than that of the teacher, minister, or any other social authority, is the first to impress itself upon the juvenile heart and mind and it is the home in which each succeeding generation is prepared to take up the reins of society. The author's purpose in writing this book was to promote the growth of the highest and holiest traits of the young female soul in preparation for her divine calling as mother and wife.

 | | | | LETTERS TO A YOUNG CHRISTIAN Sarah Jackson
In a series of letters to a young girl, the author of this little book outlines the basic demand of the Christian faith: an entire consecration to the Lord of all we have, and all we are, for time and eternity. Every power of our soul and body, every moment of our time, every talent and gift, all our property, all our influence, all our knowledge, and all the objects of our affection belong to God, and are to be held only as His and for His service, with a perfect willingness on our part to relinquish any or all of them whenever they shall be called for. We must be ready to suffer all for the will of God, and to be motivated everywhere and at all times by the one purpose of pleasing God.

 | | | | GENTLE MEASURES: Advice for Management and Training of the Young Jacob Abbott
Jacob Abbott, who was a popular Nineteenth Century author of over two hundred books for and about children, certainly understood the mind and nature of a child and his expertise comes through in this book. The absolute authority of the parent over their children must be achieved at a very young age, but there are better ways of winning over the heart of the young to complete obedience other than harsh words or even violent punishment. Excellent chapters on "Gentle Punishment of Disobedience," "Rewarding Obedience," "The Art of Training," the place of "Encouragement and Commendation," and many other subjects rarely covered by modern Christian authors.
Jacob Abbott was the father of John & Gorham Abbott, who authored THE MOTHER AT HOME, THE CHILD AT HOME & THE FAMILY AT HOME.

 | | | | A DISPLAY OF ARMINIANISM John Owen
Of the seventeenth-century Puritans, John Owen was by far the most influential. His defenses of the Reformed faith were so articulate and precise that they stand unrefuted even to this day. In this book, Owen meticulously exposes from the Scriptures the Arminian, or Semi-Pelagian, system, demonstrating that its doctrine of free will stands opposed to the biblical doctrine of the sovereignty of God.

 | | | | RIGHTEOUSNESS BY FAITH: The Nature and Means of Justification Charles McIlvaine
The doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone completely apart from works lies at the very heart of the division between historic Protestantism and historic Roman Catholicism. Martin Luther described it as the "article of a standing or falling church"; the Council of Trent conversely singled out believers in this particular doctrine as the recipients of its most vehement curses. Unfortunately, a subtle denial of this important tenet of the orthodox faith is currently being propagated within some Reformed circles through what has become known as the Federal Vision movement. According to this theology, justification begins at baptism and is continued throughout the life of the Christian by his covenantal obedience, to be finally completed at his death. Addressing this very same error in his own day, as it manifested itself within Nineteenth Century Anglicanism through the Oxford Movement (Tractarian Controversy), the author of this book demonstrates that the acceptance of the doctrine of inherent or infused, rather than imputed, righteousness is the first step on the road to Rome, resulting in the final and open acceptance of sacerdotalism, synergism, priestcraft, veneration of saints, and other Romish heresies.
Dr. C.P. McIlvaine (1799-1873) served as Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Ohio in the middle of the 19th century. He served as chaplain to the Senate and to West Point Military Academy (where he was instrumental in a revival among the cadets). He died in Florence, Italy on March 14, 1873. While being transported back to the United States, his body lay in state in Westminster Abbey for four days. A ceremony was held in the central aisle to honor his memory. The only other American citizen who has been honored in this way is Sir Winston Churchill. Banner of Truth recently reprinted his excellent book on preaching entitled "Preaching Christ: The Heart of the Gospel Ministry."
