"This book is an incredible journal of a woman from age 16 until death. She candidly discusses her weaknesses and struggles. Continually I said to myself, 'She's just like me!' She gives amazing insight into how God uses ther everyday difficulties to expose our pride and selfishness. I was encouraged and inspired. I could read it again immediately. MORE LOVE TO THEE
The Life & Letters of Elizabeth Prentiss
George Lewis Prentiss

"Reading Christian biographies has had an immeasurable influence in my own life and spiritual growth. To be able to see the hand of God, guiding, correcting, and sustaining one who trusts Him has encouraged me to believe that true discipleship is possible not only for the great figures of the Bible but for us ordinary folks as well. MORE LOVE TO THEE reveals the character of a woman who loved God and earnestly sought to help others to love Him." - Elisabeth Elliot

"I am delighted about the publication of the rare volume of THE LIFE & LETTERS OF ELIZABETH PRENTISS. We greatly need more biographies of godly women, and this work is certainly in that category." - Iain Murray

Aunt Jane's Hero, The Little Preacher, The Home at Greylock & Thoughts Concerning the King
ELIZABETH PAYSON PRENTISS

AUNT JANE'S HERO

Aunt Jane was a widow who was rich with wisdom and advice for everyone she knew. Horace was injured in the Civil War which helped turn his soul to God. Because of Aunt Jane's advice, Horace courageously went ahead with his marriage plans while having little means to support a family. Horace and Maggie demonstrated a lifestyle that showed what is important in life: two hearts that loved each other and God. They did not have many material possessions, but they valued their riches in Christ.

Aunt Jane said to Horace, "The truth is, I want you to set an example to the hosts of young men who are living unsatisfactory, bachelor, boarding-house lives. In nine cases out of ten pride lies at the bottom of these lives. Because they can't begin where their fathers and mothers left off, they won't begin at all. They dry up and stagnate for want of an object."

Paperback 6X9, 186 pages

THE HOME AT GREYLOCK

When the large family came together for Christmas at Greylock there was much discussion about children and how to raise them. Mrs. Grey left a legacy of wisdom and comfort to all who knew her. "To follow in the footsteps of that venerated and beloved one [Mrs. Grey], was ambition enough for her; to serve God as she had served Him, to lend herself to every human soul that needed her, as she had done; this was her choice. The humble pathway was little heeded by a world that, struggling for the honors of life, cannot conceive of their being deliberately put by. But it was watched by the eye of God, and how often He met her upon and blessed her in it, is known only to Him."

Paperback 6X9, 236 pages

THE LITTLE PREACHER

Herman had an unfortunate injury and was forced to lay in bed and think. His grandmother told him to “ask our dear Lord why He spared his life on that terrible night, since surely it was to do something for Him.” Soon after that little Herman received a special gift from God. Herman’s father became very sick and “lay, day after day, night after night, in profound sleep.” Max realized “My long sickness has made me another man.” The story illustrates how God uses affliction to develop spiritual life in people.

Paperback 6X9, 122 pages

THOUGHTS CONCERNING THE KING

Elizabeth Prentiss was a devoted follower of Jesus who wrote down a portion of her life’s accumulated wisdom. The preface states: “These selections were originally made for private use. By permission of Dr. Prentiss they are now published in their present form.” The book is a collection of short but weighty paragraphs of text and poetry.

ELIZABETH PAYSON PRENTISS (1818–1878) was born in Portland, Maine. She had a feeble constitution and often battled sickness. Her writing talent became evident at an early age and she wrote for "The Youth's Companion" magazine. She had a natural gift for teaching and taught in a school in Richmond, Virginia. She had a religious life, but it wasn't until 1840 that the love of Christ became alive in her soul. She married Rev. George Lewis Prentiss in 1845, who was a pastor and became a professor of pastoral theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York. She published "Stepping Heavenward" in 1869 and it became very popular all over the world, having been translated into dozens of languages. She also wrote hymns, such as MORE LOVE TO THEE which is still popular in churches everywhere.

THE PASTOR'S DAUGHTER: The Way of Salvation Explained to his Daughter by Rev. Edward Payson
Louisa Payson Hopkins

A unique glimpse into the home and heart of the remarkable Payson family of Portland, Maine, as Edward Payson lovingly leads his oldest daughter, Louisa, to genuine faith in Christ. It traces the struggles of a brilliant girl from the age of 4 to 14 as she seeks to come to Christ on her own terms, and not the Lord's.

Those who have loved "A Pastor's Sketches" by Ichabod Spencer will find themselves in familiar territory as Payson faithfully presses his daughter to repent and believe the Gospel. The chapters are brief and filled with illuminating illustrations that parents and pastors alike will find useful in presenting the claims of Christ and the demands of the Gospel upon sinners. There is nothing like this available anywhere!

It cannot be recommended too highly!

SERMONS FOR CHRISTIAN FAMILIES: On the Most Important Relative Duties
Edward Payson

"The cultivation of domestic piety and morality is the surest means of elevating the character of our species, and of advancing their welfare both for this world and that which is to come. The good father cannot be a bad citizen; and the child, trained to habits of subordination and duty in the family, will be likely to carry these habits with him into the extended relations of mature life. The rule and measure of human duty is the law of God. A character formed on any other basis, or shaped by any other model, than the Word of God, must be essentially defective. Deep piety constitutes the only sure foundation of a pure morality; and any system of education which overlooks this, and provides only for a reputable passage through the present world.

This is designed for a Family Book. It delineates character, enforces obligations, and inculcates duties, by the observance of which, with the blessing of God, families become nurseries of the church of Christ. Christian fathers, the members of maternal associations, all pious mothers indeed, will find it a welcome companion, a faithful monitor and friend. That such a work is greatly needed, there is but too much evidence in the prevailing laxity of family government and discipline. That it may be instrumental of reviving Family Religion, - 'of turning the heart of the fathers unto the children, and the heart of the children unto their fathers, and thus of averting the curse of God from our land,' - is the prayer of the Editor." - June 1832

LOVE TO CHRIST INDISPENSABLE - John 21:15

THE CHARACTERS WHOM CHRIST LOVES - Proverbs 8:17

"Sermons for Christian Families is Edward Payson at his best--full of wisdom and practicality, majoring in the majors, and warmly devotional in spirit. With this reprint, Payson will again be recognized as being on par with William Jay and J.C. Ryle as among the best of former preachers who unabashedly proclaimed the whole counsel of God to families in an eminently charitable, challenging, and convicting manner. As parents, read these sermons for your own edification, then read them aloud with passion to your teenagers and older children." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids

"Edward Payson entered deeply into the love of Christ, and reflected it to an eminent degree. Reading this book will surely bring blessings to the churches of our day." - Iain Murray

"Among the preachers of previous eras, Edward Payson stands tall. His profound meditation on God's Word gave his preaching and writing an unction that can lead men and women to be taken up more and more with the glorious being that is the triune God. Highly recommended." - Michael A.G. Haykin

""These powerful messages are at least as pertinent today as in the day they were given. Solid Ground Books does us a service in making them more widely available again. Here is substantive exposition of Scripture searchingly applied to the soul. Payson is unsparing in pointing out sin but is also faithful to point to Christ. In spite of the age of the material, the book is quite readable. This book will be beneficial to any family." - Dr. Ray Van Neste
