 | | | | THE WORKS OF JONATHAN EDWARDS Volume # 24 - The "Blank Bible" Jonathan Edwards, edited by Stephen J. Stein
In 1730, Jonathan Edwards acquired a book-like, leather-bound manuscript containing an interleaved printed edition of the King James Version of the Bible. Over the next three decades, Edwards proceeded to write in the manuscript more than five thousand notes and entries relating to biblical texts (though paradoxically he called the manuscript his 'Blank Bible'). Only a fraction of the entries has ever been published. This volume presents a complete edition of the 'Blank Bible' accompanied by an informative introduction, multiple appendices, and an extensive index.

"The Jonathan Edwards Project is the first of its kind; a comprehensive, exhaustive effort to produce an online archive of all of Edwards' sermons, treatises, letters and musings to serve the needs of anyone who cares to know the man. To date, no other university or institute has attempted to transcribe, computerize and then post online the complete works of any one historical figure. . . . Though he may never attain the rock-star status of George Washington, with the Yale project, Edwards will live forever." - Adrian Brune, Hartford Courant
Concerning Volume 25 we read: This wide-ranging volume covers the final fifteen of the thirty-three years that Jonathan Edwards preached and includes some of his greatest sermons; including his Farewell Sermons to his Northampton congregation. The period is defined by Edwards' inventive strategies to improvise during the delivery of his sermons. Considering dependence on the written text in the pulpit to be a serious failing, he devised a double-columned, outlined format for his sermon manuscripts and continued to use it for the rest of his life. Sermons from this period also include those preached to Mahican and Mohawk Indians at the mission post of Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Widely recognized as a great theologian, an influential preacher and a prolific writer, Jonathan Edwards played a prominent role in helping to spark the spirit of revivalism known as the Great Awakening in the eighteenth-century America. Edwards' sermons, while intellectually engaging, were also accessible to the common people and often generated highly emotional responses. His foremost desire was to help people transform from mere believers in Christian doctrine to converted Christians who were moved to action by the principles of their belief. This two-volume collection of Edwards' works features important sermons of the Great Awakening as well as Edwards' memoirs and other essays. First published in 1834, here is what makes this new edition of The Works of Jonathan Edwards the best available:
More readable. This edition has larger, more readable type than previous editions.
More complete. This edition contains all matter included in the first collected American edition, various original extracts from the diary and papers of Edwarads, several smaller pieces printed originally in a separate form, and a memoir by descendant Sereno E. Dwight.
"Jonathan Edwards . . . was among the noblest and ablest Christians of his age, and can now be seen, two centuries after, as one of the greatest theologians ever given by God to his church. As a saint and scholar, evangelist and educationalist, pastor and teacher, missionary and metaphysician, he showed a grasp of the grandeur of God's sovereignty and the glory of divine grace equaled only by men of the caliber of John Owen and John Calvin." - J. I. Packer

Jonathan Edwards is primarily remembered today as a gifted and influential theologian. But in eighteenth-century America, his preaching resounded from pulpits throughout New England, sparking the flame of revival that became the 'Great Awakening.' As the fame of this Puritan pastor and preacher of revival spread far and wide, his sermons galvanized many of his listeners into reexamining their lives and faith.
Ever alert to the dangers of the religiously complacent; those who only observed the surface requirements of religion; Edwards tirelessly proclaimed the overpowering majesty and grandeur of God, and humanity's hopelessness for moral improvement short of his grace. This stirring selection of 20 messages allows readers to experience the words that swept through this young nation with a message of repentance and a call to action.

Reviews:"The title is fully descriptive of the book. Here are represented some twenty sermons by Jonathan Edwards with only a minimum of critical apparatus - some six pages of introduction which only on the last unnumbered page do you discover are by Patricia Klein, who has done a good job within the limitation of so few pages. . . . Here are twenty sermons to read and be challenged by. The selection is fair, including some of his most famous pulpit presentations and several sermons that Edwards chose to preach on more than one occasion. It includes both his first sermon and that delivered to the Northampton Church after it had rejected him as their minister following some twenty-three years of service." - Expository Times

 | | | | THE SERMONS OF JONATHAN EDWARDS: A Reader Jonathan Edwards; Edited by Wilson H. Kimnach, Kenneth P. Minkema, and Douglas A. Sweeney
Jonathan Edwards, widely considered AmericaÆs most important Christian thinker, was first and foremost a preacher and pastor who guided souls and interpreted religious experiences. His primary tool in achieving these goals was the sermon, out of which grew many of his famous treatises. This selection of Edwards' sermons recognizes their crucial role in his life and art.
The fifteen sermons, four of which have never been published before, reflect a life dedicated to experiencing and understanding spiritual truth. Chosen to represent a typical cycle of Edwards' preaching, the sermons address a wide range of occasions, situations, and states, corporate as well as personal. The book also contains an introduction that discusses Edwards' contribution to the sermon as a literary form, places his sermons within their social and cultural contexts, and considers his theological aims as a way of familiarizing the reader with the "order of salvation" as Edwards conceived of it. Together, the sermons and the editors' introduction offer a rounded picture of Edwards the preacher, the sermon writer, and the pastoral theologian.
Wilson H. Kimnach is professor of English at the University of Bridgeport. Kenneth P. Minkema is executive editor of The Works of Jonathan Edwards. Douglas A. Sweeney is assistant professor of church history at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
 REVIEWS:
"Informed general readers will greatly enjoy Edward's clear style and keen intellect, and from this they can be directed to the complete Works published by Yale."- Library Journal
"This valuable collection of 15 sermons Jonathan Edwards preached between 1722 and 1751 to both his English and his Indian congregations includes some of his most famous, as well as five sermons that have not been previously published. . . . This arrangement serves to introduce Edwards's sermons as the primary agent of interpreting religious experience and guiding souls under his pastoral care from the earliest stages of conversion, through instruction and discipline, to the final vision of heaven. . . . Highly recommended to general readers, undergraduates, and graduate students." - Choice
"Before the critical editions provided by the Yale series, only 70 of the sermons had been published. The sermons project, therefore, represents a major step in the advancement of Edwards scholarship, and this present selection provides a handy introduction to this vast world."- Christopher J. Viscardi, Theological Studies
"The Sermons of Jonathan Edwards is an excellent companion to A Jonathan Edwards Reader, both of which are ideal for classroom use and general scholarly reference. . . . [A] welcome addition to the growing library of Jonathan Edwards scholarship."- Ecclesiastical History

"The authors have provided a fascinating, accessible, insightful study of AmericaÆs most famous sermon, and in addition traced its reception over the next two centuries. By itself this book is a diachronic probe deep into America's religious past, using one of its most provocative events to measure the evolution of her religious mind over its most important two centuries." - Gerald McDermott
"This book offers an archaeological dig of America's most famous sermon, Edwards's "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." The original context and the deep layers of the sermon's life in American culture over the centuries are unfolded with precision and care, resulting in an ideal text for classroom use. | | | | A HISTORY OF THE WORK OF REDEMPTION Jonathan Edwards
The scope of A HISTORY OF THE WORK OF REDEMPTION is vast. From a deep and extensive knowledge of Scripture, Jonathan Edwards set out to survey the whole of the redemptive work of God in history, from the Fall of man to the consummation of all things.
A thrilling conclusion emerges: Everything in human history from start to finish is subservient to Christ's work of redemption. Not only can nothing thwart that work, but, in the wisdom of God, all that comes to pass actually serves to advance it.
In a series of thirty sermons preaching in Northampton, New England, in 1739, Edwards sought to establish his congregation in this mighty truth. Later in his ministry he hoped to write a book expounding the same theme, and was even reluctant to accept the presidency of Princeton College for fear this project would be hindered.
Although he did not live to carry out his intention, we can see the substance of what the intended book would have contained in this new edition of the sermons of 1739. Here readers can catch Edwards' vision of the mighty advance of the cause of Christ in the world, and gain encouragement for all gospel labors from the certainty of its triumph.

This was the very first biography written on Jonathan Edwards, clearly one of the most important and influencial men in American history. Every major biography ever written on Edwards has quoted extensively from this volume. Finally you can go right to the source!
"In God's time, in God's providence, he raises up servants who are specially graced by His Spirit with an insight and ability to speak to timeless, transcendent truths. They do so out of lives of discipline and godliness, so that their words carry that special weight that comes only from the consistency of life bred by the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. Jonathan Edwards was one such gift to God's people. His life, his story, his passion for Christ, speaks ever more loudly in our self-centered, passionless age. One cannot read the story of his life without looking very closely at our own." - Dr. James White

 | | | | A SWEET FLAME Piety in the Letters of Jonathan Edwards Edited and Introduced by Michael A.G. Haykin
"A Sweet Flame introduces readers to the piety of Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758). Dr. Haykin's biographical sketch of Edwards captures the importance the New England minister placed on Scripture, family piety, and the church's reliance upon God. The remainder of the book presents 26 selections from various letters written by Edwards, two written by family members at his death, and an appendix drawing upon Edwards's last will and the inventor of his estate. In this collection of letters Michael Haykin offers you a behind-the-scenes look into the life of Jonathan Edwards. As you look, you will see him dealing with sick children, trying to make sense out of the conflict with his Northampton congregation, and reveling in the serendipities of friendship. Read these letters and you will find Edwards becoming your own 'most obliging and affectionate friend in the labors of the gospel.' " --Stephen J. Nichols
"Jonathan Edwards was not only a brilliant theologian, but also a devoted husband, father, pastor, and friend. Underneath it all, he was a man passionate about living in joyful obedience to God. In this highly recommended collection of letters, skillfully edited and annotated by historian Michael Haykin, Edwards's warm-hearted piety shines through on every page, giving us a glimpse into the heart and mind of this servant of God." --Justin Taylor
"A rare privilege awaits you. In these pages, you are about to meet one of the great Christians of all time: Jonathan Edwards! Your guide is reliable. Dr. Haykin has gathered some of the choicest letters of Edwards. In them, you will discover the insights of this noble leader on 'Piety,' up close and personal. Piety? That is the way we tap the resources God provides, to live for His glory and help others find them, too. Before going on to the high ridges of thought, your escort will sketch the chief events of Edwards' life. Then, in the letters, you will find Edwards' views on piety, in his own words. Treasures for all ages are here. Edwards tells how he found heaven within, GodÆs mighty presence, enabling him to meet every challenge and be more than conqueror. Best of all, he had the radiant hope of being at home with the Lord in the life beyond. Bringing the eternal into practical situations is no mean feat. Edwards, however, accomplishes just that. We see his role as a child, husband, parent, pastor, mentor, and educator with pungent thoughts on conversion, prayer, the Bible, revival, evangelism, and other vital topics. Each fruit of the Spirit is to be found here, expressed in Edwards' own words, demonstrated in his life. The selections were chosen wisely. We are all indebted to Dr. Haykin for his outstanding service in making these classics available in such an attractive format. Now, to savor them!" --George S. Claghorn

 | | | | Life and Theology of Jonathan Edwards (DVD) Dr. Sam Storms
Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is widely acknowledged to be America's most important and original philosophical theologian. Most know of his sermon Sinner's in the Hands of an Angry God, however, that is usually the extent of their knowledge. Edwards was passionate about his devotion to the Lord Jesus and his word and this was expressed in of two themes that Edwards never relented -- the absolute sovereignty of God and the beauty of God's holiness. Edwards' published works were primarily designed to defend the Puritan doctrine of Calvinist orthodoxy and his influence on Congregational and Presbyterian theology was profound. His extensive notebooks reveal an interest in philosophical problems for their own sake, however, and his deployment of philosophical arguments in his private papers and published works are both sophisticated and frequently original. Dr. Sam Storms, director of Enjoying God Ministries has given the body of Christ a great resource tool in this teaching series on DVD - The Life and Theology of Jonathan Edwards.
"This is one of the best introductions we have ever seen on the life & theology of the great puritan preacher and theologian Jonathan Edwards." - NiceneCouncil.com

click for details | | Jonathan Edwards: A Life George M. Marsden
Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is a towering figure in American history. A controversial theologian and the author of the famous sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, he ignited the momentous Great Awakening of the eighteenth century.
In this definitive and long-awaited biography, Jonathan Edwards emerges as both a great American and a brilliant Christian. George Marsden evokes the world of colonial New England in which Edwards was reared--a frontier civilization at the center of a conflict between Native Americans, French Catholics, and English Protestants. Drawing on newly available sources, Marsden demonstrates how these cultural and religious battles shaped Edwards's life and thought. Marsden reveals Edwards as a complex thinker and human being who struggled to reconcile his Puritan heritage with the secular, modern world emerging out of the Enlightenment. In this, Edwards's life anticipated the deep contradictions of our American culture.
Meticulously researched and beautifully composed, this biography offers a compelling portrait of an eminent American.
George M. Marsden is Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame. He has written numerous books, including The Soul of the American University and The Outrageous Idea of Christian Scholarship.

click for details | | THE LEGACY OF JONATHAN EDWARDS American Religion and the Evangelical Tradition D.G. Hart, Sean Michael Lucas, and Stephen J. Nichols, eds.
Now more than two centuries after his death, the specter of Jonathan Edwards continues to loom large over the evangelical world. In celebration of the tercentenary of Edwards's birth, the thirteen essays in The Legacy of Jonathan Edwards examine the vision, theology, and influence of this theological giant within the context of contemporary American Protestantism. According to the editors, "The essays in this volume . . . reveal that Edwards has something to say to a variety of disciplines, including theology, philosophy, and history."
The first part of the book focuses on the vision of Jonathan Edwards. Chapters discuss the typological Edwardsian understanding of redemption as encompassing heaven, earth, and hell; his zealous missionary work to Native Americans; his Christ-centered preaching; and his notions of Christian spirituality.
Explicating Edwards's theology, the second section seeks to uncover its significance for the contemporary theological scene. Essays show how Edwards responded to the materialist currents of the Enlightenment, how Edwards might respond to open theism, what Edwards can teach us about doing apologetics, and some difficulties in agreeing with Edwards that America is a nation in covenant with God.
The third section looks at how Edwards's theology contributed mightily to the theological and ecclesiastical debates of the nineteenth century. A final section includes two chapters offering personal observations on the world of Edwardsian scholarship and a bibliographic essay.
The Legacy of Jonathan Edwards fills the need for a reappropriation for a new age of the theological, historical, and philosophical contributions of a theological giant. It will serve experienced Edwards readers as well as introduce new ones to his legacy.
