THE PROMISES OF GOD: A New Edition of the Classic Devotional Based on the English Standard Version
CHARLES H. SPURGEON revised and edited by Tim Chester

OVER 50% DISCOUNT ALL WEEK!!

JUST 1 LEFT AT THIS GREAT PRICE!!!

"God has given no pledge that he will not redeem and encouraged no hope that he will not fulfill." —Charles Spurgeon

For over 150 years, Charles Spurgeon’s classic daily devotional on God’s promises has comforted the hearts of God’s people. For each day of the year, Spurgeon reflects on a specific promise of God from Scripture that strengthened his heart in times of severe depression and suffering. Each daily meditation testifies to the goodness, faithfulness, and power of God.

In this volume, Tim Chester helps Spurgeon speak to a new generation, updating archaic words, shortening sentences, and streamlining sentence structure—all without losing Spurgeon’s passionate and pastoral voice. These devotional readings will inspire you with fresh faith in the promise-making and promise-keeping God of the Bible.

"The Promises of God" is a 365 day devotional by Charles Spurgeon that was originally titled "The Cheque Book of the Bank of Faith." Tim Chester has updated archaic words and used more modern sentence structure to make reading easier while still maintaining the feel of the original. He also used a modern version of the Bible (English Standard Version) rather than the original KJV except when the KJV wording is directly referenced in the devotion. This does make the devotions easier to read and understand.

Each day's devotion started with a verse or two from the Bible, then Spurgeon gave a mini-sermon on that verse--what the verse means for us and how we live. I read an ebook version, but it looked like each day was only a page or two long. I enjoyed reading Spurgeon's insights and thoughts about the selected verses. "

EDITOR TIM CHESTER Introduces this book with the following words:

"For as long as I can remember, my father has had a plaster bust of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892) in his study. Like my father and me, Spurgeon was a Reformed Baptist pastor, and Spurgeon has always been one of our heroes. When, in 2017, my father preached his last sermon, he passed the bust on to me. So, as I write these words, Spurgeon is looking down on me.

Known as “the Prince of Preachers,” Spurgeon attracted large crowds, often speaking to over ten thousand people at a time before the days of amplification. His preaching was characterized by the directness of his address and the vividness of his language. In 1861, his congregation moved to the specially-built Metropolitan Tabernacle with seating for five thousand people and standing room for a further thousand. It would remain his base for the next thirty-eight years until his death in 1892.

Spurgeon founded a pastor’s college to train church planters, opposed slave ownership, and opened an orphanage. He also fiercely opposed liberal theology. He paid a price for this workload and the controversies it brought, suffering for many years physically with gout and emotionally with depression. It is to these struggles that he alludes in his preface for this volume.

Spurgeon reached a still wider audience through his writings. His sermons were transcribed by stenographers as he spoke and on sale for a penny the following day. Among his many works was The Cheque Book of the Bank of Faith.

It was not Spurgeon’s first book of daily devotional readings. In 1865, he published Morning by Morning, followed three years later by Evening by Evening. Soon they were combined into Morning and Evening, selling over 230,000 copies during his lifetime and many more since.

Twenty years or so later, Spurgeon wrote The Cheque Book of the Bank of Faith as a follow-up. And this was my father’s favorite. He used to read it to our family during my childhood.

In The Cheque Book of the Bank of Faith, Spurgeon likens the promises of God in the Bible to checks (or “cheques” as Spurgeon himself would have spelled it). A check is a promise in written form. It promises

to give the recipient the stated sum whenever they present it at a bank.

The promises of God, says Spurgeon, are like checks waiting to be cashed in “the bank of faith.”

In 2003, Crossway published an edition of Morning and Evening updated by Alistair Begg using the English Standard Version of the Bible.

I have taken the liberty of doing the same with The Cheque Book of the Bank of Faith. I have replaced archaic words, shortened sentences, used modern word ordering, and added references to biblical allusions. I have also changed the title, partly because checks are becoming dated and partly to prevent a fight with my publishers over the spelling of “cheque” (the UK spelling) and “check” (the US spelling)! Apart from this, the content is the same. Only occasionally have I retained an archaic phrase to retain the poetic power of the original text. My aim has been to let Spurgeon speak to a new generation. Why? Not as an historical curiosity. But so the promise-making and promise-keeping God of the Bible speaks

words of comfort to his people. As Spurgeon says in his preface,

'I have written out of my own heart with the view of comforting their hearts. . . . May the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, inspire the people of the Lord with fresh faith!'

Many thanks to Richard Chester (my father) and Tamsin Faiers for reading my draft to ensure it sounded contemporary while retaining the “voice” of Spurgeon."

Tim Chester, 2018

Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) was an English Baptist pastor at New Park Street Chapel, London (which later became the Metropolitan Tabernacle), for thirty-eight years. As the nineteenth century's most prolific preacher and writer, his ministry legacy continues today.

ON THE PREPARATION AND DELIVERY OF SERMONS: The Classic Dargan Edition
John A. Broadus, edited by Edwin C. Dargan

This is the classic "Dargan Edition" of John A. Broadus' masterful treatise on "The Preparation and Delivery of Sermons" updated in 1897 by his colleague, Edwin Charles Dargan.

Originally written in 1870, this book became the standard text-book for more than a generation, passing through 22 editions in the US alone. It was used as a text in the United Kingdom, Japan, China and Brazil in the 19th century. It has been updated twice in the 20th century, but these updates, in many ways, were unfaithful to Broadus' original work. There is nothing like "The Dargan Edition" of Broadus.

WORDS FROM HIS DAY...

"No other work on the same subject, published in this century, has sold so largely in so short a time, while the religious and secular press, in all parts of the country, has almost universally commended it in strong and earnest notices. Its immediate republication in London was followed by the endorsement of Bishop Ellicott, Rev. C.H. Spurgeon, and the religious periodicals demonstrating that it met with equal favor abroad." -- The Original Publisher

"Abounds in excellent hints, rules, and suggestions. It is very lucid in style--must do good on a large scale." - Southern Presbyterian

"We have read the book with absorbing interest. Rich, deep thoughts and eminently practical suggestions abound through these pages." - Associate Reformed Presbyterian

"A good book; full of instruction, rich, varied and exhaustive." -- Princeton Review

"Sunday School superintendents and teachers will be guided, helped, and strengthened by it." - Sunday School Times

WORDS FROM OUR DAY...

"John A. Broadus' Treatise on the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons is truly a classic work in the field of homiletics. Its value is proven by its continued use, well over a century after its original publication. Four revised editions have been prepared, intended to update previous versions in various ways. While such revisions have proven useful, they have also created distance from the author and his thought. E. C. Dargan's revision is arguably the best volume for understanding Broadus' ideas. Prepared in 1897 (two years after Broadus' death), it incorporates changes that Broadus intended to make, and had discussed with Dargan, his successor at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Accordingly, this edition represents Broadus at his best, matured through twenty-five years of preaching and studying and teaching the subject." -- Robert A. Vogel, Professor of Preaching, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

"This edition of Broadus' classic work on preaching is simply the best that ever appeared. It reflects the mature thinking of the author and incorporates many of his private notes from lectures that he himself planned to incorporate into a revised edition before his death in 1895. His friend, colleague and fellow homiletics professor, E.C. Dargan, carefully incorporated those notes into the volume that originally appeared three years later. Its reappearance in our day will be a great aid to encouraging the recovery of biblical, applicatory preaching." --Tom Ascol, Pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Cape Coral, FL

JOHN ALBERT BROADUS (1827-1895) was to become one of the most influential Baptist leaders in the history of the United States. Saved in a revival meeting at age sixteen, he planned to study medicine at the University of Virginia. A sermon by S.M. Poindexter so challenged him that he surrendered to the call to the ministry instead. He still entered the university in 1846, and in 1850 he received the M.A. degree. Upon graduation he became the teacher of Greek and Latin at the University of Virginia and also took the pastorate of the Baptist Church of Charlottesville. The next year he resigned the teaching position, and he dedicated himself to the church for the next several years, except for two years spent as chaplain at the university. In 1857 he met with four other men to plan a new seminary for Baptists in the South. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary was formally established in 1858, and in 1859 Broadus became a professor there. He was later the second president of the school. Despite the offer of many pastorates, he made the seminary his life's work, teaching there for thirty-six years. Whether preaching or teaching, he was noted for being able to state deep truths in a way plain enough for all to understand them clearly. He stressed the importance of this to his ministerial students. His book "A Treatise on the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons" has been a classic on the subject since its publication. "Lectures on the History of Preaching" and "A Gentleman and a Scholar: The Life of James P. Boyce" have also been recently reprinted by Solid Ground Books. At the height of his popularity and usefulness, he was called home to Heaven on March 16, 1895.

This paperback volume is nearly 600 pages in length.

THE SOLDIER'S CATECHISM: Virtuous Warriors in an Age of TerrorA Manual for the Spiritual Fitness of the US Armed Forces
Michael E. Cannon, Jr.

Michael Cannon has served for many years as a Military Chaplain, and has both seen the need for this Manual and acted to meet that need. He has done tremendous research in gathering materials for this "Soldier's Catechism" including the following:

(1) The Soldier's Catechism used in Oliver Cromwell's "New Model Army"

(2) The Soldier's Pocket Bible which comes from the same period of time, and contains hundreds of passages centered around themes addressed to the soldier.

(3) Significant quotations from the Creeds and Confessions of the Church of Jesus Christ

"The Soldier's Catechism, although not infallible as the Word of God, has become to me alike the protective sheath for the Soldiers sword of the Spirit (Eph 6:17). This daily help encourages me to mediate on the whole counsel of God as revealed in Scripture from the vantage point of one who must prepare and lead Soldiers into both physical and spiritual combat. The Soldier's Catechism emboldens my spiritual expeditionary endurance as I wrestle "against the rulers of darkness of this age" as a warrior in God's Church triumphant. My hope is the Soldier's Catechism will be an encouragement to you as we fight the good fight along side each other." - Colonel Michael C. Cloy, Infantry, US Army

"I highly recommend this tool to encourage our great American Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardians. In these days of danger and intense service to our country, a means of reminding our troops of their Hope and Joy is very much needed. This time-honored means of instruction is bound to encourage men and women to "glorify God and enjoy Him forever!" - CH (COL-P) Douglas E. Lee, U.S.Army Assistant Chief of Chaplains for Mobilizations and Readiness

"The Rev. Michael Cannon's Soldier's Catechism succeeds wonderfully in modernizing the classic Cromwellian Soldier's Catechism for use by the 21st century soldier. The updated questions and answers accompanied by the English Standard Version (ESV) biblical text successfully engage the modern soldier, are directly applicable to contemporary military tactics, and address the issues of present-day warfare." -the Rev. Richard M. Edwards, PhD, Senior Lecturer, Philosophy, University of Wisconsin Colleges

THE EPIC STORY OF THE BIBLE: How to Read and Understand God's Word
GREG GILBERT

A User-Friendly Introduction to Interpreting and Understanding God's Word

Many Christians view the Bible as a book that they know they should read, but it can be hard to know where to start. If they spend time regularly reading it, it can often feel like a chore to be checked off for the day. What many miss is that the Bible is a sweeping story full of narrative, poetry, and letters—something to be marveled at and enjoyed.

In The Epic Story of the Bible, Greg Gilbert aims to teach Christians—or those interested in Christianity—what the Bible is and how to study it. Explaining the various genres and major themes woven throughout Scripture, Gilbert helps readers appreciate the word of God with less confusion and greater confidence. Adapted from the ESV Story of Redemption Bible.

ENDORSEMENTS

“Greg Gilbert is a world-class expositor. (Trust me; I got to sit under his preaching for nearly twelve years.) The Epic Story of the Bible will revolutionize your ability to grasp the sweeping, soaring narrative that centers—from Genesis to Revelation—on Jesus the King. Read and marvel.” -Matt Smethurst, Lead Pastor, River City Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia; Editor, The Gospel Coalition; author, Deacons and Before You Share Your Faith

“I sometimes worry when we try to identify the Bible’s major theme or core message since the Bible is more like a rich ecosystem of themes working together to offer us a picture of God and his glory. However, in this very readable book, Greg Gilbert brings together important biblical themes to help Christians, whether new to or seasoned in the faith, understand God’s word. With a good command of biblical themes, helpful illustrations, and personal anecdotes along the way, Gilbert shows himself to be a clear and accessible guide for God’s people.” -Mark Jones, Pastor, Faith Vancouver Presbyterian Church, British Columbia, Canada

“This is a resource that equips us to be better Bible readers and infuses delight in God’s redemptive work. What a gift! Greg Gilbert skillfully leads us over the terrain of Scripture, helping us grasp its sweeping story and biblical themes. It will be a great asset to the training work of churches and organizations in how to study the Bible and rejoice in our Savior and King.” -Taylor Turkington, Director, BibleEquipping.org

“I am thrilled about Greg Gilbert’s guide to exploring the story of the Bible. This provides the essentials we need to get started—an overview of the Bible’s intricate and epic storyline, along with its central themes. I am eager to see how this helps many engage the Bible with eagerness and understanding.” -Drew Hunter, Teaching Pastor, Zionsville Fellowship, Zionsville, Indiana; author, Made for Friendship

Greg Gilbert (MDiv, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is senior pastor at Third Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the author of What Is the Gospel?; James: A 12-Week Study; and Who Is Jesus?; and is the coauthor of What Is the Mission of the Church? Greg and his wife, Moriah, have three children.

BUSINESS FOR THE GLORY OF GOD: The Bible's Teaching on the Moral Goodness of Business
WAYNE GRUDEM

Can business activity in itself be morally good and pleasing to God? Sometimes business can seem so shady—manipulating the “bottom line,” deceiving the consumer, or gaining promotions because of whom you know.

But Wayne Grudem introduces a novel concept: business itself glorifies God when it is conducted in a way that imitates God’s character and creation. He shows that all aspects of business, including ownership, profit, money, competition, and borrowing and lending, glorify God because they are reflective of God’s nature. Though Grudem isn’t naïve about the easy ways these activities can be perverted and used as a means to sin, he knows that Christians can be about the business of business.

This biblically based book is a thoughtful guide to imitating God during interactions with customers, coworkers, employees, and other businesses. See how your business—and your life in business—can be dedicated to God’s glory.

VIEWING SICKNESS BIBLICALLY: How to Make Sense of Seemingly Senseless Sickness
Joseph Whiting

What if nearly everything you think you know about sickness is wrong?

Much of our understanding of sickness has been shaped by our self-obsessed Western culture. We see it as an enemy to be avoided or as a punishment meted out by an angry or indifferent God. We are told God has promised us lives free from disease and suffering, and when it seems those promises fail, we are left wondering how a God of love could be glorified in our own illness or in the sickness of someone we love.

In Viewing Sickness Biblically, Joseph Whiting draws from the wellspring of Scripture, seasoned with personal experience, to address these questions every Christian must grapple with and help show the path to a more biblical understanding of the cause, purpose, and benefits of sickness.

Through what lens ought we see sickness, death, and the God who is in charge of it all?

The correct answer is sure to bring much glory to God and comfort to our souls.

__________________________

Christian hope encompasses that future day when sickness and suffering will be no more because the curse and presence of sin—which Christ bore for us—will be no more (Matt. 8:14–17; Isa. 53:4; Gal. 3:13), for “the first things have passed away” (Rev. 21:4). This day is coming but is not yet here; it is the day we long for when we will know the fullness of salvation in Christ. Until that day, sin, suffering, and sickness are both a part of a groaning creation (Rom. 8:19–25) and a means through which God works His sanctifying grace, molding us into the image of Christ (Rom. 5:1–5; James 1:2–4).

"Joe Whiting has written a book, Viewing Sickness Biblically, that helps us to embrace God’s will in sickness and to grow in faith and love for Christ. It is a book that gives us hope and encourages us to see the goodness of God and the wonder of grace more fully through suffering, as well as help with the specifics of how to get there. Viewing Sickness Biblically is a book written by one who has tasted the kindness of God in Jesus, lived the truths and principles he writes about, and set an example, in his own life, of following Christ, for us to walk behind (1 Cor. 11:1)." – Joey Newton, Pastor of Newtown Bible Church, Newtown, CT; MDiv, The Master’s Seminary; PhD, Southern Seminary

"The current culture seems to think that you have to have experience with an issue before you can even speak about the issue. If you share that perspective, this book is for you because Joe Whiting has experienced suffering. But more important than Joe’s experience with suffering is Joe’s theology of suffering drawn directly from Scripture. There is great benefit in being taught by someone who has suffered. There is greater benefit being taught by someone who believes in the inerrancy and sufficiency of Scripture to help those who suffer." – Bud Moss, Pastor, MDiv, The Master’s Seminary, Pine Grove Baptist Church, Leesville, SC

About the author:

Joseph Whiting resides in South Carolina with his wife of thirteen years, Amy. They have two children with the Lord. Joseph attended The Master’s Seminary from 2010 to 2013 and has been a Certified Biblical Counselor with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors since January 2019. He has counseled, taught, and ministered in several states and is now at his home church in South Carolina.

SAMPLE FROM INTO TO GENESIS

KEY THEME: The theme of Genesis is creation, sin, and re-creation. God made the world very good, but cursed it after the fall and then destroyed it in the flood because of man’s disobedience. The new world after the flood was also spoiled by human sin. The call of Abraham, through whom all nations would

be blessed, gives hope that God’s purpose will eventually be realized through Abraham’s descendants.

GENESIS AND A MAN’S HEART: The story of Genesis begins the story of the world. It introduces the first plotline movements of the Bible, which reflect the plotline of history. The drama unfolds along the movements of the creation of the world (Genesis 1–2), the fall of humanity into sin (Genesis 3), and God’s promise of redemption (3:15), which subsequently unfolds through God’s covenants with his people (12:1–3). As such, this story tells us what we were made for, what is wrong with the world, and what God is doing to restore all things. Genesis places us within the only story that makes sense of life.

All men need to know that our smaller narratives are part of a greater one, an epic drama that reaches back to creation and stretches ahead to the new creation to come. We need to know that we were made for more than trying to make ourselves look great; we were made in God’s image to reflect his greatness (1:26–27). We need to know that our world is one wherein men kill their brothers (4:8), wickedness is great (6:5), and pride swells to the heavens (11:1–9). It hasn’t always been this way, nor will it remain so. God has promised to decisively deal with evil and restore blessing to the world through a coming Redeemer-King (3:15; 12:1–3; 49:9–10). The men of faith in Genesis—Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph—found that God took them in their weakness, accepted them by grace, and proved faithful to his promises.

Much has transpired in God’s plan since the days of Genesis. Still, we are part of this same story. Jesus has now come as the last Adam to undo all the damage the first one unleashed. Like the men of old we continue to find our place in this story by hoping in our Redeemer.

ENDORSEMENTS

“The apostle Paul prayed that Christians would have strength to comprehend the dimensions of Christ’s love together ‘with all the saints’ (Eph. 3:18), and there is a sense in which that should be both our own prayer and our approach when we study any biblical truth or indeed any passage in Scripture. But how can we ordinary Christians do this without access to a vast library of resources from the two-thousand-year history of the church? The ESV Church History Study Bible is one very substantial and wonderfully helpful answer. Here, without detracting from the importance of being able to ‘read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest’ the Word of God itself, readers are invited to sit down with some of the greatest and most spiritually tuned minds of the ages and engage in Bible study together with them. They may not be ‘all the saints’ but they are certainly ones you would choose to help you in Bible study! The ESV Church History Study Bible promises to be a long-lasting gift to every Christian home and will provide a lifetime of help and encouragement.” -Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries

“I want my preaching to reflect biblical insights from the past as well as the present. So, my preparation typically includes commentary from the church fathers, Reformers, Puritans, and other leaders from church history. Now the ESV Church History Study Bible puts those riches within easy reach of every student of the Word of God. This new resource will help pastors and other Bible teachers expound, illustrate, and apply the Scriptures with greater clarity, creativity, and conviction.” -Philip Graham Ryken, President, Wheaton College

“The ESV Church History Study Bible is an exceptional resource merging the clarity of the ESV translation and the rich history of the Christian church. Containing valuable articles and commentary from the church’s most trusted historians and theologians, this study Bible allows readers to peer through the windows of each era of church history where the mighty acts of God are unmistakably on display. May God use this volume to ignite a new generation of believers passionate about the past, present, and future in which God’s plan continues to unfold in Jesus Christ.” -Dustin Benge, Associate Professor of Biblical Spirituality and Historical Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, The Loveliest Place

“The same Holy Spirit who inspired the Scriptures has illumined the church to receive and understand it. We do not read the Word of God as the first ever to do so but in a long line of those whom the Spirit has taught and from whose insights we continue to benefit. The ESV Church History Study Bible brings the fruit of that light to enrich our study of God’s Word.” -Alan D. Strange, Professor of Church History, Mid-America Reformed Seminary

“It is a great joy and a true blessing to read Scripture with God’s saints across the generations. The ESV Church History Study Bible is an impressive resource that has tremendous potential to strengthen and deepen people’s faith. Take and read.” -Timothy Larsen, McManis Professor of Christian Thought, Wheaton College

“It is said we stand on the shoulders of giants. In this unique study Bible, readers will be connected with the voices of the faithful from generations past. This will enhance the reader’s worship of God and enrich their understanding of the faith once for all delivered to the saints.” -John Mark Yeats, Professor of Church History, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

THE ESSENTIAL EDWARDS COLLECTION: JONATHAN EDWARDS ON THE GOOD LIFE
Owen Strachan & Doug Sweeney with Introduction by John Piper

CURRENTLY WE ONLY HAVE ONE VOLUME FROM THIS SET WE ARE OFFERING FOR $5.00 WHILE THEY LAST!!

JONATHAN EDWARDS: ON THE GOOD LIFE

ENTHUSIASTIC ENDORSEMENTS FOR THIS SERIES

"A great resource! Edwards continues to speak, and this series of books is an excellent means to hear Jonathan Edwards again live and clear. Pure gold; be wise and invest in it!" - Josh Moody, Senior Pastor, College Church, Wheaton, Illinois

"Everyone says Jonathan Edwards is important. Quite frankly, however, his writing style is pretty dense by contemporary standards, so few pastors and other Christian leaders have invested much time reading him. This new series tackles the problem. Here is the kernel of much of Edwards's thought in eminently accessible form." - D.A. Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

"In The Essential Edwards Collection, Owen Strachan and Doug Sweeney point with knowledge and excitement to clear and searching sections that illuminate God's truth and search our hearts. In this collection, Edwards is introduced to a new generation of readers. His concerns are made our concerns. This is a worthy effort and I pray that God will bless it." - Mark Dever, Senior Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC.

"Why hasn't this been done before? The Essential Edwards Collection is now essential reading for the serious-minded Christian. Doug Sweeney and Owen Strachan have written five excellent and accessible introductions to America's towering theological genius - Jonathan Edwards. They combine serious scholarship with the ability to make Edwards and his theology come alive for a new generation. The Essential Edwards Collection is a great achievement and a tremendous resource. I can't think of a better way to gain a foundational knowledge of Edwards and his lasting significance." - R. Albert Mohler Jr., President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

"You hold in your hands a unique resource: a window into the life and thought of Jonathan Edwards, a man whose life was captured by God for the gospel of Jesus Christ. In these pages you'll not only learn about Edwards, but you'll be able to hear him speak in his own words. This winsome and accessible introduction is now the first thing I'd recommend for those who want to know more about America's greatest pastor-theologian. - Justin Taylor, Managing Editor, ESV Study Bible.

"I am deeply impressed with the vision that has brought together this splendid library of volumes to introduce Jonathan Edwards to a new generation. Owen Strachan and Douglas Sweeney have provided an incredible service by making the often challenging writings of America's greatest theologian accessible for seasoned theologians, pastors, and students alike with their five-volume Essential Edwards Collection. This series is properly titled the "essential collection." - David S. Dockery, President, Union University

"Jonathan Edwards was a preacher of the Word, a pastor of souls, a philosopher of first rank, and the greatest theologian America has ever produced. In this wonderful new anthology of Edwards's writings, the great Puritan saint lives again. I can think of no better tonic for our transcendence-starved age than the writings of Edwards. But beware: reading this stuff can change your life forever!" - Timothy George, Founding Dean of Besson Divinity School of Samford University

"From a course he taught at Yale and in personal friendship, Doug Sweeney has taught me much about Edwards. Possessing a command of the academic field, he and Owen Strachan nevertheless write this collection with pastoral concern, showing the relevance of Edwards for our Christian faith and practice today. It's a rare combination of gifts and insights that Sweeney and Strachan bring to this task." - Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Theological Seminary California

"Jonathan Edwards is surely one of the most influential theologians of the eighteenth century. Now, at last, we have a wide-ranging and representative sample of his work published in an attractive, accessible and, most important of all, readable form. The authors are to be commended for the work they have put into this set and I hope it will become an important feature of the library of many pastors and students of the Christian faith." - Carl R. Trueman, Academic Dean, Westminster Theological Seminary

JOHN PIPER WRITES AN INTRODUCTION IN WHICH HE CALLS EDWARDS 'A GOD-ENTRANCED MAN'
ESV DAILY DEVOTIONAL NEW TESTAMENT: Through the New Testament in a Year
A 365-Day Plan to Read and Pray through the Entire New Testament

Designed to help readers immerse themselves in the New Testament, this daily devotional explores Matthew through Revelation in one year. Each day includes a reading from the first half of the New Testament (Matthew through Acts), a reading from the second half (Romans through Revelation), brief reflections adapted from the Gospel Transformation Study Bible, and a prayer prompt. Every day’s reading also ends with one or two related verses from the Psalms. Insightful and accessible, the ESV Daily Devotional New Testament provides insights into the biblical text and encouragement for godly living.

365-Day Devotional: Includes designated Scripture readings for January 1 through December 31

Interactive: Each day features passages from the New Testament and Psalms, along with insightful reflections and thoughts for prayer

Makes a Thoughtful Gift: Includes the plan of salvation to help share the gospel

"Give yourself to reading, exhortation, and teaching. Think on the things contained in this book. May what you learn be evident to all. Apply these things carefully to yourself and teach them to others, for in so doing you will save yourself and those who hear you.”

With these words the Book of Common Prayer affirms the absolute necessity and sufficiency of the Bible in fulfilling the responsibilities of pastoral ministry.

Although more than three centuries have elapsed since those words were written, this exhortation is arguably more needed than ever. There is a glaring lack of Bible knowledge—not only in the general population but also among those who regularly attend church. Neglecting proper biblical nourishment spoils the spiritual appetite, and the result is theological malnutrition.

If we are to avoid this condition we must have Bible-teaching pastors and Bible-reading congregations—men and women whose ready reception of the preaching is more than matched by their daily examination of Scripture.

One of the reasons for the renewed interest in the Puritans is surely because they are an example to us in this area. It is impossible to explain the strength of their character and the impact of their lives apart from their solid experiential grasp of biblical truth. Their delight was in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditated day and night. We would do well to follow such an example.

There are all kinds of devotional aids for which we have reason to be thankful. However, nothing can or should take the place of the regular, systematic reading of the Bible, which contains everything necessary for salvation. So let me commend this volume as a vital help in learning and living as a Christian." --Alistair Begg

REFORMED EXPOSITORY COMMENTARIES: New Testament Series
Doriani, Ryken, Phillips, Thomas and Chappell

THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW by Daniel Doriani

While paying careful attention to a commentary's traditional interest in the structure, backgrounds, and grammar of the text, Doriani also supplies the theological commentary, Christ-centered focus, and personal and corporate applications that pastors and teachers need. Each chapter attends to Matthew's original intent and seeks to express that intent in ways that evoke his distinct voice, so as to fulfill the goal of Matthew's gospel: making disciples by forming the mind, heart, and hands of believers.

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE by Philip Ryken

This commentary is an exposition of Luke: 'the Gospel of Knowing for Sure.' Luke tells us that he wanted to provide an orderly account of the life of Jesus that would help people be more certain of the good news of his death and resurrection. The purpose of this commentary is simply to make Luke's message clear for a contemporary audience by explaining, illustrating, and applying its truth to everyday life, with the hope that readers will understand the gospel and come to full assurance of salvation, as Luke intended.

INCARNATION IN THE GOSPELS by Richard D Phillips, Daniel Doriani, & Philip G Ryken

This book contains sermons preached in advent by 3 of America's most respected pastors. These sermons seek to meet the needs of their people and use the opportunity the season affords in preaching about Christ and Redemption.

THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES by Derek W.H. Thomas

One of the most respected Bible teachers of his generation guide us through Luke's record of the growth of the church from Pentecost, throughout Asia Minor, and beyond.

**THE EPISTLE TO THE GALATIANS by Philip Graham Ryken

Philip Graham Ryken interprets Galatians in line with Reformation teaching on this epistle, especially with respect to the doctrine of justification by faith alone. "Properly understood, the gracious gospel of Galatians liberates us from legalism," Ryken writes. "But since we are legalists by nature, the book challenges many of our preconceptions about what it means to have a right relationship with God." Ryken employs primarily the ESV.

**PRESENTLY OUT OF PRINT (HOPEFULLY BACK SOON)

THE EPISTLE TO THE THE EPHESIANS by Bryan Chappell

In this truly homiletical commentary, Dr. Bryan Chapell unfolds Paul's glorious description of how the triumph of the church will occur and what our roles are in Christ's ultimate victory.

THE EPISTLE OF FIRST TIMOTHY by Philip Graham Ryken

This commentary originated with a series of Sunday evening sermons preached at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. In keeping with the subject matter of the book itself, the focus of the exposition is on its practical implications for life in the local church. The author chose to preach from this New Testament book early in his ministry, so as to get the full benefit of PaulÆs instructions to Timothy as a young man in gospel ministry.

THE EPISTLE TO THE HEBREWS by Richard Phillips

"Few studies can be more profitable to Christians today than that of the Epistle to the Hebrews," says Richard Phillips. "Written . . . To a group of Jewish Christians facing persecution in the mid-first century AD, the words of this book speak to Christians everywhere about standing firm in Jesus Christ." Hebrews captures the challenges and pitfalls of people throughout the ages and shows both why and how to press on in the faith. Its message of warning and hope centers on the surpassing supremacy of Jesus, seen often from the vantage point of the Old Testament. In keeping with the Reformed Expository Commentary series, this treatment of Hebrews is accessible to both pastors and lay teachers. Each volume in the series provides exposition that gives careful attention to the biblical text, is doctrinally Reformed, focuses on Christ through the lens of redemptive history, and applies the Bible to our contemporary setting.

THE EPISTLE OF JAMES by Daniel Doriani

With 59 commands in 108 verses, the epistle of James has an obvious zeal for law. In his imperatives, James directly communicates the royal law, the law of King Jesus (2:8). Thus, the hasty reader will not see much of the gospel in James. But as Doriani reveals in his insightful commentary, the double mention of God's grace at the rhetorical climax of the book shows that the gospel of James is the message of God's grace for sinners.

SWIFT AND BEAUTIFUL: The Amazing Stories of Faithful Missionaries
David Calhoun

In his Spiritual Unfolding of Bishop H. C. G. Moule, John Baird wrote, ‘No course of reading is more establishing than that of Christian biography — the battle story of those who in the conflict of earth have been great in the life of God.’ Swift and Beautiful tells the amazing stories of a dozen men and women who at great cost gave their lives to take the gospel of God’s grace to those who had not heard it. Some of these faithful missionaries are well-known, others almost forgotten, but all are ‘great in the life of God.’

‘How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”’ (Isaiah 52:7, ESV).

ESV READER'S LETTERS OF PAUL: Cloth Over Board
SAINT PAUL

ESV Reader's Letters of Paul

Cloth over Board

It's unquestionable that the apostle Paul is the most significant theologian in church history. He solidified his theology in letters to early churches—texts that remain as challenging and relevant today as they were to their original recipients. The ESV Reader's Letters of Paul was produced in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation—a period of time in which the reformers rediscovered the vital theological truths within Paul's epistles that have shaped Christian theology ever since. The text of Paul's thirteen letters is presented without verse and chapter numbers in a clean, single-column format on thick, cream-colored paper to encourage extended reading. An introductory article explains how the letters fit within the rest of the Bible as well as the important role they have played in the history of the church.

UNITED TO CHRIST, WALKING IN THE SPIRIT: A Theology of Ephesians
BENJAMIN L. MERKLE with a Series on NT Theology Edited by Thomas Schreiner and Brian Rosner

Join New Testament Scholar Benjamin Merkle as He Explores the Major Themes of the Book of Ephesians

Paul wrote Ephesians as instruction and encouragement for the church in Ephesus, and it has continued to influence the church for centuries. This New Testament book specifically focuses on the believer’s union with Christ and our inability to stand before God without the work of Jesus Christ and the Spirit, both of which are still essential today.

In this addition to the New Testament Theology series, scholar Benjamin Merkle offers an accessible summary of the theology of Ephesians that highlights God’s work in salvation and how Christians should respond. Each chapter focuses on a key theological theme—the plan of God, union with Christ, walking according to the Spirit, unity of the church, and spiritual warfare in the present age—and why it is relevant for the church today.

**Part of the New Testament Theology Series: Other volumes include The Joy of Hearing: A Theology of the Book of Revelation and The Mission of the Triune God: A Theology of Acts

**Ideal for Anyone Wanting to Study the Bible More Deeply: Perfect for pastors, seminarians, college students, and laypeople

**Written by Benjamin Merkle: New Testament scholar and author of Ephesians in the ESV Expository Commentary

ENDORSEMENTS

“United to Christ, Walking in the Spirit clearly and concisely presents the themes of Paul’s short but majestic letter to the Ephesians. The themes of individual union with Christ, the teaching about the church, and the call to walk well are all well handled. If you desire to understand the theme of this letter, this book is for you.” -Darrell L. Bock, Executive Director of Cultural Engagement, The Hendricks Center, Dallas Theological Seminary

“Few books of the Bible lay out the height, depth, and breadth of the gospel like Ephesians. Benjamin Merkle puts the riches of this beloved Pauline epistle on full display, offering fresh insights into God’s plan, union with Christ, life in the Spirit, the unity of the church, and spiritual warfare. Whether you are a pastor, teacher, small-group leader, or simply someone who wants to better understand Ephesians, this accessible book will deepen your love for Christ and show you how to live out the gospel more faithfully.” -Matthew S. Harmon, Professor of New Testament Studies, Grace College and Theological Seminary; author, Asking the Right Questions: A Practical Guide to Understanding and Applying the Bible

“With strong exegetical support of his biblical theology, and with equally strong biblical theology considerations guiding his exegetical analysis, United to Christ, Walking in the Spirit is a gift to the body of Christ. In this small volume, Benjamin Merkle gives a masterful reading of Ephesians’ argument and individual themes. He reads in concert with the best scholarship on Ephesians as he explains Paul’s understanding of the role of the church in the decree of God—in redemptive history—and the treasures of the individual elements that are part of the web of our salvation. Anyone wishing to enjoy the book of Ephesians with greater depth and joy should have this work close at hand.” -Eric C. Redmond, Professor of Bible, Moody Bible Institute

“The theology of Ephesians is rich, inspiring, and transformative. Benjamin Merkle has put together a concise and helpful summary of the key theological themes of Ephesians in this volume. His description is not only an enriching book to read but the perfect complement to a commentary in a course on Ephesians.” - Clinton E. Arnold, Research Professor of New Testament, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University

NEW CROSSWAY SERIES OF SHORT CLASSICS FROM THE PAST
Jonathan Edwards, C.H. Spurgeon, J.C. Ryle, Henry Scougal, B.B. Warfield, Thomas Chalmers, Martin Luther, Francis Schaeffer, Lemuel Haynes, J.I. Packer, Thomas Goodwin

A NEW SERIES OF 11 GREAT CLASSICS FROM GIFTED PASTORS IS BRAND NEW.

The Crossway Short Classics series seeks to serve two purposes. First, it aims to beautifully preserve these short historic pieces of writing through new high-quality physical editions. Second, it aims to transmit them to a new generation of readers, especially readers who may not be inclined or able to access a larger volume. Short-form content is especially valuable today, as the challenge of focusing in a distracting, constantly moving world becomes more intense. The volumes in the Short Classics series present incisive, gospel-centered grace and truth through a concise, memorable medium. By connecting readers with these accessible works, the Short Classics series hopes to introduce Christians to those great heroes of the faith who wrote them, providing readers with representative works that both nourish the soul and inspire further study...

Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit will use these short works to arrest your attention, preach the gospel to your soul, and motivate you to continue exploring the treasure chest of church history, to the praise and glory of God in Christ.

(1) HEAVEN IS A WORLD OF LOVE by Jonathan Edwards w/ a Foreword by Sam Storms

In this classic exposition of 1 Corinthians 13:8–10, Jonathan Edwards exhorts Christians to ponder the love of God—both here in the world and in expectation of heaven. The things of this world are temporary, but “love never ends” (1 Cor. 13:8). God’s love is a foretaste of future glory, made available through communion with the Holy Spirit. Each page is rich with pastoral insights that will leave readers hungry to experience more of God’s love in eager anticipation of heaven.

Foreword by Sam Storms, author of Kept for Jesus and Tough Questions

Part of the new Crossway Short Classics series

Encourages Christians with the love of God experienced in communion with the Holy Spirit

Elegant typesetting produced on high-quality book paper

(2) THE EMOTIONAL LIFE OF OUR LORD by Benjamin B. Warfield w/ Foreword by Sinclair Ferguson

A Close Look at the Complex Emotions of Christ

In the search to understand the deity of Christ, Christians might overlook what the Bible reveals about his humanity. Did Jesus really feel emotions? What grieved him? What delighted him? How did Jesus—fully human and fully God—react to the world and people around him? Throughout Scripture, Jesus displays a range of emotions that can help believers understand him more intimately.

In The Emotional Life of Our Lord, theologian B. B. Warfield explains how Christ’s complex emotions and personality proved his humanity. It was necessary for Christ to be born in the likeness of mankind to bear their griefs, carry their sorrows, take their infirmities, and ultimately redeem their lives. In this encouraging book, readers learn to see Christ as a compassionate Savior through his sinless expressions of emotions—from righteous anger to abiding love.

An Important Look at Jesus’s Humanity: Examines Christ’s complex emotions and explains their significance to the gospel

Draws Readers Closer to Christ: Explains how Christ’s emotions allow him to sympathize with believers today

Written by B. B. Warfield: Considered one of America’s leading theologians in the 19th century

(3) ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE DEPRESSED by Charles H. Spurgeon w/ Foreword by Randy Alcorn

In this classic sermon, Charles Spurgeon gently urges those struggling with depression to cast their burdens upon the Lord, who will not forsake his people. Having battled depression and discouragement himself for most of his years in ministry, Spurgeon encourages the downtrodden to hold fast to the promises of God, for he is steadfast and will comfort his children as they walk faithfully with him.

Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) was an English Baptist pastor at New Park Street Chapel, London (which later became the Metropolitan Tabernacle), for thirty-eight years. As the nineteenth century's most prolific preacher and writer, his ministry legacy continues today.

Like the apostle Paul, the often jovial Spurgeon was “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” (2 Cor. 6:10 ESV). Near the end of his words that you’re about to read, Spurgeon says, “Glory be to God for the furnace, the hammer, and the file. Heaven shall be all the fuller of bliss because we have been filled with anguish here below, and earth shall be better tilled because of our training in the school of adversity.”

(4) THE EXPULSIVE POWER OF A NEW AFFECTION by Thomas Chalmers w/ Foreword by John Piper

In this powerful sermon, Thomas Chalmers inspires Christians to remove the snares and tangles of sin—not through legalistic obedience but through the power of a new and greater affection for God. Chalmers reminds God’s saints that as sojourners living in this world, true power over the trials and sins of this life is found only in desiring Jesus Christ.

Foreword by John Piper

Part of the Crossway Short Classics series

Elegant typesetting produced on quality book paper

Reorients our lives toward God

Originally a sermon with the same title

(5) FIGHTING FOR HOLINESS by J.C. Ryle with Foreword by Andrew Atherstone

“True Christianity is a fight,” wrote J. C. Ryle in 1870. He argued that from the day of their conversion until the day they die, Christians are called to be soldiers for Christ in a war for their holiness. This inspiring call to action written over 150 years ago continues to be a source of great encouragement and inspiration for believers today.

In this addition to the Crossway Short Classics series, Ryle explains why the fight for holiness is one of absolute necessity for Christians. Identifying the three main enemies of every believer—the world, the flesh, and the devil—he emboldens them to “either fight or be lost” in their daily battle and offers biblical and historical examples of notable Christian “soldiers.” 'Fighting for Holiness' is a bold reminder for believers to daily put on the whole armor of God and train their eyes on Christ.

In his helpful Foreword Andrew Atherstone gives the following helpful background to this material: "Are You Fighting? was written in December 1870, when armed conflict between Prussia and France was engulfing continental Europe. French forces were starved into submission in the Siege of Metz and routed at the Battle of Sedan. Napoleon III, Empereur des Français, was captured and deposed, and German troops encircled Paris. The British government maintained a studied neutrality, but the newspapers were filled every day with dramatic reports from across the English Channel. It presaged the Great War of the next generation... But Ryle saw the opportunity to drive home a spiritual lesson. The Franco-Prussian War was the preacher’s hook to lay hold of an audience and challenge them about fighting the Christian war. His tract was designed to be highly engaging, and easy to give away to friends and neighbors, sold in bulk at two shillings per dozen... Ryle’s writing has an urgent, evangelistic heartbeat. He pleads with us to take seriously the pursuit of holiness. In an age when the character and conduct of Christians are often indistinguishable from the secular world—as endemic today as in the 1870s—it is an appeal we desperately need to hear."

(6) THE LIFE OF GOD IN THE SOUL OF MAN by Henry Scougal w/ Foreword by Joel Beeke

A Classic Guide for Christians Who Want to Move from Empty Religion to Authentic Faith

Writing to a friend who was disillusioned by religion, minister and theologian Henry Scougal created what would become a classic text on Christian living. Compassionately explaining what true religion is and isn’t, Scougal shares biblical practices that lead to real spiritual transformation.

In The Life of God in the Soul of Man, Scougal cuts through false ideas about religion and demonstrates how to pursue true unity with God. He explains that religion shouldn’t be primarily focused on restraining or dictating outward behavior, but living a divine life characterized by faith, a love for God and others, purity, and humility. As it did for the recipient of Scougal’s original letter, this book challenges believers to turn from empty religion and allow the Holy Spirit to conform them into Christ’s glorious image.

(7) THE FREEDOM OF A CHRISTIAN by Martin Luther (a new translation)

Martin Luther’s Classic Work, Newly Translated by Robert Kolb

Originally published in 1520, The Freedom of a Christian is one of Martin Luther’s most well-known and enduring treatises. In it, the German Reformer examines Christian ethics and how justification by faith alone impacts the liberty of believers. He famously writes, “A Christian is a free lord of everything and subject to no one. A Christian is a willing servant of everything and subject to everyone.” Luther also further develops ideas and doctrines that were key to the Reformation, such as the priesthood of all believers and union with Christ.

This addition to the Crossway Short Classics series features a new translation from the original German to English by renowned Reformation scholar Robert Kolb. The Freedom of a Christian reminds modern-day readers that it is ultimately grace that transforms God’s people and frees us to love and obey.

Accessible: Helpful for those looking to learn more about Luther and the Christian life, both new Christians and seasoned saints alike

Part of the Crossway Short Classics Series: Introducing modern-day readers to classic works of faith—other volumes include Fighting for Holiness; Heaven Is a World of Love; and The Emotional Life of Our Lord

New Translation: Translated from the original German by world-renowned scholar Robert Kolb, author of Martin Luther: Confessor of the Faith.

Foreword by Carl R. Trueman: Author of the bestselling book The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self

(8) THE LORD'S WORK IN THE LORD'S WAY & NO LITTLE PEOPLE by Francis Schaeffer w/ Foreword by Ray Ortlund

A Collection of Sermons on Christian Leadership from Theologian Francis A. Schaeffer

Christians serving the Lord can fall into two traps: depending too heavily on their own power or underestimating their God-given purpose. In this collection of classic sermons, renowned theologian and philosopher Francis A. Schaeffer teaches believers how to rely on the Holy Spirit—not personal effort or status—in matters of service and leadership.

This short book includes an excerpt from Schaeffer’s sermon, “The Lord’s Work in the Lord’s Way,” plus 2 sermons from the book No Little People. Covering topics including humility and servanthood, Christian office, spiritual battles, and trusting God’s methods, Schaeffer encourages pastors, students, and church members to live as consecrated people, working humbly for God’s approval instead of human praise.

Classic Yet Timely Messages: Powerfully addresses common issues for the church, including spiritual pride, humanism, and how to live as consecrated people

Perfect Gift for Students and Pastors: Motivates those serving in ministry to keep a Christ-centered perspective

Accessible Introduction to the Thought of Francis Schaeffer: With a foreword by Ray Ortlund Jr., this inspiring collection introduces modern audiences to Schaeffer’s work

(9) SELECTED SERMONS Rare Sermons from Black Puritan Minister Lemuel Haynes w/ Foreword by Jared C. Wilson

The Crossway Short Classics Series Presents Rare Sermons from Black Puritan Minister Lemuel Haynes

Born in 1753, Lemuel Haynes was an indentured servant who grew to become a dynamic Reformed preacher. Nicknamed “The Black Puritan,” he is credited as being the first African-American ordained for ministry in the United States. This addition to the Crossway Short Classics series presents some of Haynes’s important yet little-known work.

Selected Sermons features 4 rarely published sermons, along with a biography of Haynes. In “Universal Salvation,” he preaches on the reality of hell and the character of Satan. “A Sermon on John 3:3” explores Jesus’s command to be born again. “The Character and Work of a Spiritual Watchman Described” details qualifications for gospel ministers, and in “Liberty Further Extended,” he presents a biblical argument against slavery and oppression. This collection of Haynes’s sermons offers readers robust spiritual insight and a closer look at an extraordinary figure in church history.

(10) WHAT DID THE CROSS ACHIEVE? by J.I. Packer w/ a Foreword by Mark Dever

A Classic Essay on Penal Substitutionary Atonement from Theologian J. I. Packer

Penal substitutionary atonement—the belief that Jesus’s death on the cross satisfied God’s wrath against sin—is central to the Christian faith, but frequently debated. Is it just to punish an innocent person in place of the guilty? How can the temporary death of one substitute for the eternal death of many? Why doesn’t the cross grant Christians unlimited permission to sin?

In this famous essay, late theologian J. I. Packer analyzes Scripture and the works of early Reformers to defend the truth of Christ’s substitutionary suffering and death, the heart of the Christian gospel. Considered one of the most significant short works on penal substitutionary atonement from the 20th century, this careful, concise essay has influenced prominent theologians and is essential reading for students, pastors, and laypeople.

(11) THE HEART OF CHRIST FOR SINNERS by Thomas Goodwin 1600–1680) w/ Foreword by Dane Ortlund

This Abridged Version of Thomas Goodwin’s Classic on Free Grace Urges Readers to Trust in God’s Enduring Compassion

The grace of Jesus, free and everlasting, isn’t diminished by iniquity but is inclined toward the afflicted. The Savior, who was tempted but never sinned, shows tender affection for sinners. And in the book of John, when Jesus spoke of his coming ascension to heaven, he didn’t focus on his own glory; he promised to remain close to believers, interceding for them from heaven.

Puritan theologian Thomas Goodwin preached extensively on Jesus’s grace in his most popular work, The Heart of Christ Toward Sinners on Earth (1645). This abridged version, edited for modern readers, features updated language and a foreword by Dane Ortlund. As readers follow the last week of Jesus’s life and meditate on his love, they will be moved to confidently seek God’s throne of grace.

The Original Full Title reveals the earnest intention of the whole: : "The Heart of Christ in Heaven, Towards Sinners on Earth; or, A Treatise Demonstrating the Gracious Disposition and Tender Affection of Christ in His Human Nature Now in Glory, unto His Members Under All Sorts of Infirmities, Either of Sin or Misery." WHAT A TITLE!! WHAT A THEME!!

DAILY STRENGTH: A Devotional for Men
Contributions by Sam Storms, Drew Hunter, Philip Graham Ryken, Graeme Goldsworthy, Alistair Begg, Christopher Ash, Dane Ortlund, R. Kent Hughes

A 365-Day Devotional for Men, Perfect for Gift-Giving and Daily Reading

Daily Strength, a year-long devotional, walks Christian men through Scripture passages that speak to their most pressing issues. Featuring content from the ESV Men’s Devotional Bible, each single-page daily reading features a short summary of a Bible passage with a thought-provoking message from one of more than forty contributors. Arranged canonically from Genesis to Revelation with short introductions to each Bible book, Daily Strength encourages and enlightens men throughout the year while equipping them for moral and spiritual transformation.

INTRODUCTION

THE AUTHOR OF the epistle to the Hebrews reminds us that “it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace” (13:9). 'Daily Strength: A Devotional for Men' is uniquely designed for men to achieve that very goal. Based on the daily devotionals originally appearing in the ESV Men’s Devotional Bible, this new book presents those devotionals in a “one a day” format for regular reading throughout the calendar year.

This resource does more than inform the mind. Its aim is to equip and encourage men who long to experience spiritual and moral transformation in the depths of their heart. More than fifty men who serve as pastors, professors, and Christian leaders have contributed 365 daily devotional studies on biblical themes of practical importance to the lives of men today.

Perhaps never before in the history of the church have men faced the intensity of temptation and relentless assault from the world, the flesh, and the devil that we are witnessing in our day. The essence of biblical masculinity is being undermined as we are repeatedly told that a “real man” must be wealthy, influential, autonomous, self-made, sexually liberated, and self-reliant. The result is that marriages are being destroyed, families are in crisis, and countless men are increasingly losing their sense of identity

in Jesus Christ. 'Daily Strength' speaks pointedly to men who long for lives of integrity, self-sacrifice, love, and passionate devotion to their families and, above all, to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our goal is to strengthen and transform the hearts of men through the power of the Spirit-inspired word of God. 'Daily Strength' provides daily insights into Scripture that not only enlighten the mind but especially feed, nurture, and empower the hearts of men to enjoy all that God is for them in Jesus Christ. Each daily devotional study is tied to a particular biblical passage that speaks to the most pressing needs and concerns that men face today. The contributors are themselves men who understand the unique challenges we encounter in today’s world, and they have written with an eye to the application of Scripture to our most practical needs. Their insights are theologically rich, honest, vulnerable, penetrating, and always gospel-centered.

The devotionals included in Daily Strength follow the biblical text from Genesis through Revelation. The devotionals are not arranged topically or thematically but rather are tethered closely to the text on which each is based. To get the most out of the devotional readings, we strongly recommend that you read the Bible text for each day before you read the related devotional. There is at least one devotional for each book of the Bible, connected with the passages that most clearly capture key themes of that book. If the 365 devotionals are read consecutively throughout the year, along with the passages on which they are based, beginning in Genesis and ending in Revelation, the reader will have gained by the end of the year an extensive overview of Scripture and the history of salvation.

May the Lord’s grace strengthen and encourage you as you immerse yourself in his life-changing word.

SAM STORMS, General Editor

DAILY JOY: A Devotional for Women
Contributions by Lydia Brownback, Lauren Chandler, Elyse Fitzpatrick, Gloria Furman, Kristyn Getty, Nancy Guthrie, Trillia Newbell, Dane C. Ortlund, Jani Ortlund, Joni Eareckson Tada, Ann Voskamp, Jen Wilkin and more

A 365-Day Women’s Devotional, Perfect for Gift-Giving and Daily Reading

The Daily Joy devotional inspires women to engage with God’s word every day, allowing the truth of the gospel to transform their lives throughout the year. Featuring content from the ESV Women’s Devotional Bible, Scripture reflections and articles are written by more than 50 Christian writers and pastors including Joni Eareckson Tada, Lydia Brownback, Dane C. Ortlund, Jen Wilkin, Sam Storms, and Nancy Guthrie. Focused on biblical teaching and God’s transforming grace, these resources motivate women to apply God’s word while strengthening their hearts and nurturing their souls.

INTRODUCTION

THE READINGS IN Daily Joy: A Devotional for Women are carefully designed to connect important passages in the Bible with the heart and life of the reader in a gospel-rich, biblically responsible, and warmly accessible way. Simply put, these readings, which appeared earlier in the ESV Women’s Devotional Bible, are intended to help God’s people understand and apply his word in their everyday lives.

Every day of the year supplies a devotion written by a thoughtful voice in today’s church on a given passage of Scripture. More than fifty women and men who have proven themselves to be faithful leaders and servants in the church have contributed readings. A complete list of the contributors appears following this introduction.

The devotional readings are not arranged topically or thematically, but rather are tied closely to the biblical texts on which they are based. At least one reading is drawn from every book of the Bible, and all are connected with the passages that most clearly capture the key themes in the various biblical books. If the 365 devotions are read consecutively throughout the year, along with the passages on which they are based, beginning in Genesis and ending in Revelation, by the end of the year the reader will have gained an extensive overview of Scripture and the history of salvation.

Whether read sequentially, occasionally, or as a supplement to the study of a particular book, the devotionals are designed to enhance your study of God’s word by helping you reflect deeply on the biblical text and its meaning for us today.

Our prayer is that Daily Joy will nurture women in their relationship with the Lord by guiding them in daily, prayerful reading of the Bible and by deepening their understanding of Scripture through theologically rich devotional content that inspires heart-engaging application of God’s word to all of life.

365 Devotionals: Topics include God’s grace, redemption, idolatry, worship, God’s wrath, justice, Jesus and the law, persecution, and sin

Theologically Rich: Includes devotionals for passages throughout the Bible, arranged canonically, with short introductions of each book

Great Gift Idea for Moms, Daughters, and Students: A thoughtful way to inspire the women in your life

THE SURPRISING GENIUS OF JESUS: What the Gospels Reveal about the Greatest Teacher
PETER J. WILLIAMS

How the Story of the Prodigal Son Illuminates Jesus’s Genius

When someone thinks of Jesus, “genius” is not likely the first word that comes to mind. But when studied in detail, Jesus’s teachings and interactions with others combined high levels of knowledge and insight, verbal skill, and simplicity—showing his genius.

In The Surprising Genius of Jesus, Peter J. Williams examines the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15 to show the genius, creativity, and wisdom of Jesus’s teachings. He used simple but powerful stories to confront the Pharisees and scribes of the day, drawing on his knowledge of the Jewish Scriptures to teach his audience through complex layers and themes. Williams challenges those who question whether Jesus really was the source of the parables recorded in the Gospels, pointing readers to the truth of who Jesus is and why that matters for them today.

**Clear and Insightful: Accessible for general readers with in-depth footnotes for those wanting to learn more

**Biblical: Comprehensive, interscriptural analysis of the story of the prodigal son

ENDORSEMENTS

“This fascinating study shows how Jesus’s parables, such as that of the prodigal son, are not only powerful stories but also treasure troves of suggestive allusions to the Old Testament. Although short, this book contains a wealth of wisdom to give today’s readers insight into Luke’s parables, thereby helping them understand more of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. A gripping and illuminating read!” -Simon Gathercole, Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, University of Cambridge

“In this thought-provoking and compelling book, Peter J. Williams digs under the topsoil of the parables attributed to Jesus in the Gospels and helps us see both how expertly these stories integrate Old Testament allusions and how all the evidence points back to Jesus of Nazareth himself as their Creator.” -Rebecca McLaughlin, author, Confronting Jesus: 9 Encounters with the Hero of the Gospels

“Jesus’s parable of the prodigal son is a masterpiece in the history of storytelling. Not only does it make a powerful impact on people of all cultures, it is intricately and poetically composed and rife with allusions to Old Testament narratives, especially about Jacob and Esau. Other parables demonstrate these same characteristics. Whoever composed them deserved to be called a genius, and Jesus (rather than one of his followers) is the best candidate for that individual. The Surprising Genius of Jesus, though a little book, is chock-full of observations about Jesus’s teaching that should make readers admire him even more than they may already do.” -Craig L. Blomberg, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Denver Seminary

“A study at once scholarly and gripping of a man who was—whatever else you may believe him to have been—clearly the most brilliant and influential short-story teller of all time.” -Tom Holland, Presenter, Making History; author, Dominion: How the Christian Revolution Remade the World

“A fascinating, provocative, and important book that presents a compelling and persuasive case.” -Justin Meggitt, Senior Lecturer in the Study of Religion and Fellow of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge

“Whoever came up with the parable of the prodigal son must have had a forensic knowledge and deep understanding of the Old Testament, as well as an unrivaled ability to connect with simple people and confound and outwit the superintelligent. The one who said those words knew what he was doing—his intentions and claims are made very clear to whoever will take them seriously. Peter J. Williams’s excellent and very readable book is unique in considering the shocking wisdom of Jesus’s teaching, and it presents Jesus as accessible to everyone yet wise enough to confound even the intellectuals.” -Tim Farron, Member of Parliament, United Kingdom

Peter J. Williams (PhD, University of Cambridge) is the principal of Tyndale House, Cambridge, the chair of the International Greek New Testament Project, and a member of the ESV Translation Oversight Committee. He is the author of Can We Trust the Gospels? and Early Syriac Translation Technique and the Textual Criticism of the Greek Gospels.

THE LORD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU: The Promise of the Gospel in the Aaronic Blessing
Michael J. Glodo

Exploring the Gospel through the Aaronic Blessing

“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you,” (Numbers 6:24–25). For centuries, Christians have read these words and received them as a blessing. But have they deeply considered the meaning behind them? What does it mean for God’s face to shine upon his people?

Faces are often referred to as the window to the soul, displaying emotion and providing relational clarity between individuals. This theme of faces reverberates throughout Scripture, first appearing with Adam and Eve and notably surfacing in the Aaronic benediction in Numbers 6.

The Lord Bless You and Keep You explores this benediction to discover the important connection between a person’s face and the face of God—finding that through faces, God shines the light of the gospel upon his people and offers his grace, goodness, and blessing to those who believe in him.

**Examines a Common Biblical Passage: Explores the context, meaning, and purpose of the Aaronic benediction

**Perfect for Laypeople and Church Leaders Alike: Use this book to explore how the Aaronic benediction impacts worship in day-to-day life and within the church

**Interactive: Reflection questions provide an opportunity for discussion in small groups and meditation for individuals

**Offers Insight for Corporate Worship: Pastors and church leaders explore how the Aaronic benediction impacts corporate worship

ENDORSEMENTS

“We often hear the words of the Aaronic blessing pronounced at the end of worship services. There’s a beauty to its rhythm; its vocabulary sparkles with grace—bless, keep, peace. And we all want God’s face to shine on us! And yet, despite the popularity of this blessing, we rarely hear anyone explaining what these words really mean or what difference they make to daily life. Thankfully, Michael Glodo has arrived to help us! Combining the heart of a pastor with the understanding of an Old Testament scholar, as well as a deep appreciation of worship, he brings us treasure in both hands. The Lord Bless You and Keep You is a book to savor and enjoy.” -Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries

“Deep in the Reformation worship tradition of both Luther and Calvin is the consistent use of the Aaronic blessing. So it is a delight and a privilege to read and recommend Michael Glodo’s book-length treatment of this beautiful and powerful portion of God’s word, deepening our understanding and renewing our use of our Reformed heritage.” -Bryan Chapell, Stated Clerk, Presbyterian Church in America

“This book infuses our shallow understanding of what it means to be blessed with scriptural insight and textual richness. It invites us to think more deeply about what is promised in the familiar words of the Aaronic blessing so that we hear them with fresh meaning and find ourselves receiving them with profound joy.” -Nancy Guthrie, Bible teacher; author, Even Better than Eden

“Michael Glodo’s The Lord Bless You and Keep You is a rich exposition of a beloved and important divine blessing. Glodo’s many years of teaching biblical studies and pastoral theology, as well as his own pastoral experience and instincts, really show up in this book. This exegetical, biblical-theological deep dive into the Aaronic blessing will edify you devotionally and equip you to understand the profundity of what it means for the Lord’s face to shine upon his people.” -Ligon Duncan, Chancellor and CEO, Reformed Theological Seminary

“The Aaronic blessing is one of the great poems of the Bible, yet its simple language can catch us off guard. We find ourselves so familiar with it that we take its content for granted and miss its striking depths. Michael Glodo has done us a big service in this little book on the brief blessing that carries such great truths—in particular great truths about faces, both ours and God’s—truths many of us were not ready to appreciate until we spent months covering our faces in public. Far from being irrelevant today, this ancient blessing is, in fact, all the more true and precious to those who profess Jesus as Lord. Learn what it means and pray it afresh over the souls of those you love most.” -David Mathis, Senior Teacher and Executive Editor, desiringGod.org; Pastor, Cities Church, Saint Paul, Minnesota; author, Habits of Grace

“The Aaronic blessing (Numbers 6) is often the great blessing offered to God’s people before they depart from worship services and scatter into the world. These words have surely been some of the most familiar among God’s people for millennia. Yet few have thought about their importance. Michael Glodo not only defines and provides insight into these lines but also demonstrates the great influence the Aaronic blessing has on the entire Christian life. Be prepared to experience an old text in a new way and have your eyes opened to a life lived in light of the Aaronic blessing. The comfort, challenge, and grace this knowledge provides will bring a new appreciation for the beauty of our God and his blessings upon his people.” -Jason Helopoulos, Senior Pastor, University Reformed Church, East Lansing, Michigan

“In this book, Michael Glodo offers more than just a wonderful study of the Aaronic blessing. He provides a rich biblical-theological survey of the theme of God’s ‘face’ as it unfolds across the pages of Scripture and wise pastoral-theological applications of the numerous ways God ‘shines’ his face on us in our public worship and in our day-to-day lives.” -Scott R. Swain, President and Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando

“I have pronounced the Aaronic blessing over God’s people hundreds of times over four decades of pastoral ministry. Thanks to Michael Glodo’s book—with his outstanding exposition of Numbers 6:22–27, his theological and pastoral insights, and his sound liturgical advice—I’ll forever pronounce the benediction with much greater conviction, meaning, and joy. Whether we pronounce or receive God’s blessing, this book is really worth reading.” -Sandy Willson, Pastor Emeritus, Second Presbyterian Church, Memphis, Tennessee

“My earliest memory of church is the pronouncement of the Aaronic blessing at the close of worship. It seemed to connect us with ancient Israel and with the church through the ages, militant and triumphant. Michael Glodo has written a beautiful book that captures the emotional, theological, liturgical, and spiritual depths of this word from God. It will edify and strengthen you in faith and hope. It is the product of love for the church to the glory of God.” -Liam Goligher, Senior Minister, Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Michael J. Glodo (ThM, Westminster Theological Seminary) is associate professor of pastoral theology and former dean of the chapel at Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando. He is a contributor to A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the Old Testament and the ESV Gospel Transformation Study Bible, as well as numerous articles, including many at Reformed Faith & Practice. THE GOD WHO JUDGES AND SAVES: A Theology of 2 Peter & Jude
Matthew Harmon, Series edited by Thomas R. Schreiner, Brian S. Rosner

An Introduction to the Theology of 2 Peter and Jude from Matthew S. Harmon

Even though Peter and Jude wrote their canonical letters almost 2,000 years ago, the church today still faces similar challenges as their original readers. What do these short, overlooked books have to teach Christians today about God, humanity, and God’s redemptive plan?

In this addition to the New Testament Theology series, Matthew S. Harmon examines the unique themes of 2 Peter and Jude as well as their common ground, addressing topics such as false teaching, God’s authority, and the new heavens and the new earth. “The epistles of 2 Peter and Jude are unjustly and unwisely neglected. This book shines a floodlight on their richness and importance. It features clear organization, careful exegesis, interaction with scholarship, and theological focus. Harmon offers explanations that are often profound but not complicated or obscure. Whether in church or classroom, this book is an excellent summary of the harrowing yet hope-filled message of these short epistles written by firsthand observers of their main subject: Jesus.” -Robert W. Yarbrough, Professor of New Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary

“Set in the broader theological context of Scripture, Matthew Harmon usefully summarizes the main theological contributions of these neglected letters. He outlines the considerable theological overlap in the books at the same time as he highlights the distinctive emphases of each letter.” -Douglas J. Moo, Kenneth T. Wessner Professor of Biblical Studies, Wheaton College

“Matthew Harmon’s treatment of Jude and 2 Peter balances rich biblical-theological connections with pastoral wisdom and insight and helps readers understand how these two short letters at the end of the New Testament fit within the Bible’s great story of redemption. His work will help Christians reengage these important letters to the great benefit of the church!” -Darian Lockett, Professor of New Testament, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University

FROM THE FLAG TO THE CROSS: Scenes and Incidents of Christianity in the Civil War
Amos S. Billingsley

NOT PART OF THE AMERICAN HERITAGE FIVE-PACK

The sub-title to this masterpiece is "The conversions, prayers, dying requests, last words, sufferings and deaths of our soldiers, on the battlefield, in hospital, camp and prison and a description of distinguished Christian men and their labors."

Amos Stevens Billingsley was born in 1818, near East Palestine, Columbiana County, OH. He was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister on 10 Jan 1854, and pastored the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church in Lawrence County until 1857, when he was sent to west as a missionary by the Presbyterian Home Board of Missions. He ministered in the Colorado Gold fields, 1861-62. In 1861 he was elected Chaplain of the Colorado House of Representatives. In 1863, he was assigned as Chaplain of the 101st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He mustered in 9 Jan 1864. He was captured 20 April 1864 at Plymouth, NC, and held captive at Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. He and his wife settled in Statesville, NC, where he pastored at the colored Presbyterian Church. Rev. Billingsley died 12 Oct 1897 in Statesville, NC.

This book is a rivetting account of the work of God in the Civil War. The title of the book, FROM THE FLAG TO THE CROSS, is taken from a letter written from a dying soldier to his brother in which he commends his allegiance to the Flag but urges him to the highest allegiance to the Cross of Jesus Christ.

During the civil war in America, over 600,000 men died serving in a conflict that is hard for us to imagine. A nation birthed in liberty just some 80 years before fought a war on its own soil, between its own people, that nearly destroyed the nation. Only the hand of providence could have re-birthed this young nation out of the ash heap of the civil war, to become one of the greatest nations on the timeline of freedom.

Many theologians, historians and philosophers have debated the providential hand of God and where it acted through this terrible chapter of our history. Few have put down the telescope, in order to pick up the magnifying glass and look into the lives of the men who fought and see not whose side God was on, but where He was.

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil; for you are with me; Your rod and your staff, They comfort me."

-Psalm 23

Even the most cursory reading of civil war history makes apparent the "valley of death" that the soldiers walked through in the civil war. Scenes from Dante's Inferno pale in comparison to the reality of civil war battlefields and hospitals. Brave men on both sides of this struggle walked through the valley of death and stared into the belly of hell. But there is a story woven throughout the civil war that has remained relatively unknown. That is the story of a living God walking among the men, a Savior granting men true and eternal life in the midst of this "shadow of death." And a story of heroic men and women that went to the battlefields, not to fight for the blue or the grey but to fight for the souls of men and for the sake of the gospel. Their instruments of battle were not rifles or bayonets; their instruments of battle were Bibles, bandages and the love of Christ. These were the military chaplains and the men and women of the United States Christian Commission.

One such man was Amos Stevens Billingsley, Chaplain of the 101st Pennsylvania, who in addition to being a lifelong servant of His Master, was a prolific writer. His story from the hospitals and battlefields represents thousands of others, who like Billingsley, went to war under the banner of the Cross.
