NOTES CRITICAL AND EXPLANATORY ON THE FOUR GOSPELS
Melancthon Jacobus

Charles Hodge, William Henry Green, J.W. Alexander and others from Princeton Seminary said, "The excellent Commentaries of Dr. Melancthon Jacobus have deservedly attained a high reputation, and their wide circulation proves how well they are adapted to the wants of both ministers and laymen. They present, in a brief compass, the results of extensive erudition, abound in judicious exposition and pertinent illustration, and are, moreover, distinguished by doctrinal soundness, evangelical character, and an eminently devout spirtit."

"Jacobus is sound and plain, and is therefore a safe guide to Sunday-School teachers and others who need to see the results of learning without the display of it." - C.H. Spurgeon

"This work is characterized by solid learning, sound doctrine, and lucid statements, a pleasant style, and the most serious spirit of piety. It is much needed." William S. Plumer

"I consider that I would be doing service to the cause of pure religion, scriptural theology, and saving piety, could I contribute to the introduction of Professor Jacobus' Notes into the families, Sabbath Schools, and Bible Classes of our land." - Thomas Smyth

"Jacobus writes in the popular style of Albert Barnes, and is solidly Reformed. Some commentators make you plow an acre to find a single nugget; but not Jacobus. His exegetical notes are concise but meaty, with rich veins of practical exposition." -Dr. Robert P. Martin

Notes, Critical and Explanatory on the Acts of the Apostles
Melancthon W. Jacobus

Melancthon W. Jacobus (1816-1876) wrote this outstanding work on the Acts of the Apostles in 1859. In his own words (taken from the Preface) "As the only Inspired Histrory of the New Testament Church is here given, it becomes most deeply interesting and useful to Christians of all time to mark the great principles here illustrated; to observe the true nature of Christ's Kingdom, as here set forth, and to note the true Idea of the Church, and the laws of its progress. The important use of this Book to the Church in all time cannot be over-rated."

While Jacobus' Notes on the Gospels was reprinted 30 years ago this volume has been buried for more than 100 years. It is high time the modern church was confronted again with the messaged of Acts. There is no better place to go than this work to help uncover the meaning and application of this Inspired Volume.

THE CHRISTIAN'S HERITAGE
Twenty Selected Expository Sermons
Melancthon Jacobus, with Autobiography edited by Matthew Newkirk

"Many former parishioners and admiring hearers of Dr. Jacobus have requested for publication those sermons which they have heard with profit. And these have been gathered and are now presented, without alteration or revision, just as they were written and left. There has been no such selection as would display mere exegetical skill or literary power. Those who have demanded the volume have made the choice of the contents. And these favorite discourses are issued with the prayer that he, being dead, may yet speak to many hearts with words of comfort, joy, and conviction." - from the Preface

This precious volume of sermons by the man who wrote the outstanding commentaries on the Four Gospels and Acts was first and foremeost a preacher of God's Word. One needs only to read the first few paragraphs of the opening sermon, "The Christian's Heritage", to see, and feel, that this was a man of the Book. Scripture alone captivated this man because it spoke always of Christ. By the time you finish the opening sermon you will be riding high on the winds of heaven.

A dear friend, Rev. William M. Paxton, wrote the following of Jacobus in his memorial address: "He died in the faith of those blessed truths which he has so ably expounded and so eloquently preached. Man's Sinfulness and Christ's Salvation were the great truths which appeared in his whole work as an expositor and preacher. He had a deep sense of his own personal unworthiness in the sight of God, and this led him with simple faith to accept Christ's righteousness as his only hope. In this confidence he lived and died." -

THE CATECHETICAL QUESTION BOOKS
Applying Throughout the Questions of the Westminster Catechism
Melancthon W Jacobus

These CATECHETICAL QUESTION BOOKS claim several important advantages for the study of the Gospels. They aim to draw out the sense of the passage more fully than in any previous Question Books. They have an eye to the Harmony of the Gospels, both in the questions and references, and in the Sections, which are introduced and numbered, to show the order of events.

This plan supplies a most important want. It brings out the DOCTRINE of the Gospel narratives. It studies each Gospel in a way to adduce constant illustrations and proofs of the Shorter Catechism. Youth who have learned the Shorter Catechism in childhood, are here advanced to the second stage of instruction, and they have the Questions and Answers of that excellent summary applied to the Gospel itself, and studied with it. And a NEW METHOD is thus secured of TRAINING to the Westminster Catechism; not as a separate book, to be learned only by rote, but as growing out of the Scripture, and interwoven with its truths. A pleasing variety is also had in the study of the Catechism, the Questions of which are introduced out of their order, and are repeated, time and again, in the study of each Gospel.

EXAMPLES.

**Matthew 1:21. Who announced the name he should bear, and what was it?

What is the meaning of the name Jesus, and why was it given?

Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery?

What offices doth Christ execute as our Redeemer?

Wherein did Christ's humiliation consist?

**Matthew 1:22. What Prophecy was fulfilled by the birth of Christ?

To whom was this prophecy given? (see Isaiah 7:13)

How was it meant to be specially fulfilled in Christ?

What are the decrees of God?

**Matthew 1:23. What other name was given to Christ by a Prophet?

What is the meaning of the word Immanuel?

How many persons are there in the Godhead?

Who is the Redeemer of God's elect?

How did Christ the Son of God become man?
