Mothers of the Wise and Good
Jabez Burns

"This book answers the very questions that today's women are asking. The engaging anecdotes and instructive essays are wonderful. I have looked for a book like this for many years. Every mother, grandmother, and spiritual mother - in others words, every woman - will find great help and hope in this book." - Susan Hunt

This book was written in 1846 to honor the role of a mother. Brief biographical sketches are given of such wise and good men as Augustine, John Newton, Jonathan Edwards and many others with special emphasis upon the way that their mothers were used of God in their lives. Susan Hunt says that this is the book she has been seeking for many years to give young mothers to encourage them in their task. Elisabeth Elliot and Nancy Wilson commend this work very highly.

NEARING HOME
Comforts and Counsels for the Aged
William Schenck

This choice volume was compiled in 1868 and comprises a wonderful compendium of writings on the subject of the believer's home in heaven. Containing hymns, poems, sermons and articles it mines the rich vein of truth in the Word of God concerning the glory that awaits the believer.

Wrtiters include such well-known authors as Horatius Bonar, Archibald Alexander, John Newton, Richard Baxter, Paul Gerhardt, William Romaine, Isaac Watts, Thomas Guthrie, J.W. Alexander, William Cowper, Augustus Toplady, Gardiner Spring, Charlotte Elliot, William Plumer, Philip Doddridge and many, many more.

What William Schenck states in his Preface is equally true today:

"In this day, when so much labor is expended in producing almost innumerable books for the young, there is a danger of our neglecting the aged ones who are about to pass off this stage of life."

Those engaged in visiting the elderly will find this a most helpful source of counsel and comfort, whilst all may benefit from its contents.

PRACTICAL DISCOURSES ON REGENERATION
Philip Doddridge

"Practical Discourses on Regeneration are among the most vital wants of this age. Although for the last century much has been written on this great doctrine, nothing has fallen under our observation so popular, so plain, so scriptural, and so practical, as this production of Dr. Doddridge. The sermons were preached in 1741, during the period known as 'The Great Awakening' under the labors of Whitefield, Edwards, and others. And what was the GREAT DOCTRINE, which above all others was made prominent in the preaching of that time of God's power? What but this very Doctrine of REGENERATION, to the discussion of which these pages are so wisely and so warmly devoted." - J. Newton Brown, from Introductrion to 1854 edition

"The doctrine of the New Birth is one of the jewels in the crown of Christ's gospel. It is also our great protection against formalism which makes too much of sacraments and too little of heart religion. Excessive emphasis on the covenant and on Baptism are reappearing here and there as in the past. This fine work by Doddridge is a welcome reminder that without a spiritual rebirth no one is a true Christian". - Maurice Roberts

"Increasingly recognized as a significant figure of the eighteenth-century revival, Philip Doddridge played an important role in bringing renewal to English Congregationalism. In part this was because of his determination to work with evangelical, God-fearing men of differing ecclesial persuasions, men such as the Anglican Calvinist George Whitefield. In part, it was also due to the way he modelled true gospel preaching that was pre-eminently Christ-centred. The sermons in this new reprint serve as an excellent introduction to this kind of preaching--a type of preaching desperately needed today in North America."

RICHARD NEWTON CHILDREN'S TITLES
Richard Newton (1813-1887) was called "The Prince of Preachers to the young" by no less than Charles H. Spurgeon.

Newton was born in Liverpool, England, died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1836, and the General Theological Seminary, New York City, in 1839. He was ordained in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in the latter year in the Church of the Holy Trinity, and received a call directly to the rectorship of the same church. A year later he became recor at St. Paul's Church, Philadelphia, which post he held for twenty-two years. In 1862 he was called to the Church of the Epiphany, Philadelphia, where he labored until 1881, when he accepted the rectorship of the Church of the Covenant, Philadelphia, where he remained the rest of his life. Dr. Newton was distinguished for his contributions to juvenile literature. He was very successful in preparing for sermons for children

Solid Ground Christian Books is commited to reprinting the books of this brilliant and humble servant of Jesus Christ who sought to preach one sermon each month to the children of his flock. Every month for years over 500 children sat at his feet as he opened the Scriptures to them.

We are honored to bring these great volumes back into print!

BIBLE WARNINGS: Sermons for Children on Dangers that Lie Along the Path and How to Avoid Them
Richard Newton

The "Prince of Preachers to children" (according to Spurgeon) presents 14 challenging messages for the hearts of the young. The warnings are as follows:

The Warning Not to Forget God, The Warning Against Covetousness

The Warning Against Intemperance, The Warning Against the Transgressor's Ways

The Warning Against Lying, The Warning Against Anger

The Warning Against Grieving the Spirit, The Warning Against Breaking the Sabbath

The Warning Against Pride, The Warning Against Slothfulness

The Warning Against Discontent, The Warning Against Disobeying our Parents

The Warning Against Swearing, The Warning Against Selfishness

"All Dr. Newton's books are scriptural, logical, systematic, earnestly evangelical, and full of striking incidents and illustrations. They are models of this very important kind of literature, and will prove instructive to preachers as well as to children." - Pittsburgh Christian Advance

RICHARD NEWTON

In the prequel to BIBLE WARNINGS Richard Newton has eleven powerful sermons addressed to the minds and hearts of children on the "exceeding great and precious promises" of God. TRUTH MADE SIMPLE:
The Attributes of God Explained for Children
John Todd

In this remarkable book JOHN TODD (1800-1873) begins what he hoped to be a Systematic Theology for Children. He begins with Theology Proper, the Doctrine of God, and he covers the following:

IS THERE ANY GOD? - GOD IS A SPIRIT - GOD ETERNAL

GOD IS EVERY WHERE - GOD ALL-WISE - GOD KNOWS EVERY THING

GOD'S POWER - TRUTH OF GOD - GOD DOES AS HE PLEASES

GOD IS HOLY and GOD IS GOOD

"Truth Made Simple is a friendly but potent deviation from the fluff that permeates the childrens' book market today. Mr. Todd came up in a generation that had more confidence in childrens' ability to assimilate deep spiritual truth. He provides a welcome addition to the library of any parent who is seriously discipling his child in the Scripture. The Address to Mothers alone is worth the price of the book! Its focus on eternity will encourage us to approach our daily discipling of our children with reverence and zeal." - Selah Helms, author or "Small Talks on Big Questions"

Richard Newton, who was called by Spurgeon "The Prince of Preachers to Children", said the following about John Todd: "When I was a young man I happened to read a volume of "Lectures for Children" which had been written and published by Dr. John Todd. I felt then as if I had found a gold mine. That volume lasted me all through college, and taught me how to talk to children."

This volume also includes an ADDRESS TO MOTHERS which is one of the finest brief essays we have ever read on the powerful influence of mothers on their children. It alone is worth the price of the book.

NUTS FOR BOYS TO CRACK
Earthly Stories with a Heavenly Meaning
John Todd

John Todd (1800-1873) was a master teacher. He published about thirty volumes, all of which were re-issued in England, and several of them have been translated into German, French, modern Greek, Dutch, Danish, Italian, Arabic, Armenian, Turkish, and Tamil. His "Lectures to Children" have been printed in raised letters for the blind, and used as a schoolbook in the colony of Sierra Leone. Of some of his books several hundred thousand copies have been sold, and several of his shorter pieces, notably "Hafed's Dream," were for many years favorites for school readers.

His books FEED MY LAMBS and TRUTH MADE SIMPLE are sermons for children which have become very popular once again after being out of print for more than 125 years.

This book is filled with stories that will cause boys and young people to think about the heavenly meaning found in earthly stories. This book, like all John Todd's works, will both entertain and inform. Todd loved children and he sought always to speak their language without being silly and childish. He always had eternity in view and desired that all who read his books would be brought into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

RICHARD NEWTON, himself the 'Prince of Preacher to the young' (according to CH Spurgeon), said that he learned how to teach children from reading one of the books of John Todd.

WILLIAM G. BLAIKIE, in his outstanding book called 'For the Work of the Ministry' said the following about John Todd, "In preaching to the young, some American ministers have been highly successful; such men as Dr. John Todd and Dr. Richard Newton have attained the first rank in this department of work."

PUBLICATIONS OF THE AMERICAN TRACT SOCIETY: Volumes One - Six
Various Authors

The American Tract Society began to publish the very best of evangelical Christian Literature in the early years of the 19th century. They not only produced books from men like John Owen, John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards and many, many more but they also were faithful to produce Tracts of various sizes (between 4 and 48 pages) which addressed such topics as-

- THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, THE DAY OF TRIAL, DO YOU LOVE GOD?

- COUNSELS TO A YOUNG MAN, THE TEMPTATIONS OF YOUNG MEN

- PRIVATE DEVOTION, DO YOU PRAY IN YOUR FAMILY? By William Nevins

- COME AND WELCOME TO JESUS CHRIST by John Bunyan

- THE DECAY OF SPIRITUAL AFFECTIONS by John Owen

- WALKING BY FAITH by Andrew Fuller,

- AN ADDRESS TO SEAMAN by Edward Payson

- THE SINNER DIRECTED TO THE SAVIOR by John Flavel

- THE SABBATH A BLESSING TO MANKIND by Gardiner Spring

- THE WELL-SPENT DAY by Philip Doddridge,

- GROWTH IN GRACE by Rev. Thomas Goodwin

- A Preservative against the Sins and Follies of Childhood and Youth by Isaac Watts

- Questions and Counsel. By Ashbel Green

- The Progress of Grace; in three letters to a friend by John Newton

"The American Tract Society publications are of enduring and superlative quality. They represent the cream of the best writers in the Reformed world from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, such as John Flavel, Jonathan Edwards, and Archibald Alexander. Almost without exception, these tracts, which range from four to forty-eight pages each and cover a remarkable variety of subjects, interface biblical, doctrinal, and experiential material in practically helpful ways. Having often perused these volumes in my own study with considerable profit for nearly four decades, I am so grateful to SGCB for bringing them back into print again. Here is truly a case where 'the old is better'!" - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"The early publications of the American Tract Society are as valuable as they are varied. The individual pieces were written by well-seasoned Christians and abound in sweet seasoning for the soul. Something here for everyone."- Dr. Robert P. Martin, Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle, Washington and Editor of Reformed Baptist Theological Review

"The collected tracts are a veritable treasure chest of good sound doctrine from the greatest proclaimers of gospel truth the church has had for the last 300 years. You would be doing your soul a tremendous dis-service if you fail to obtain these gems!" - Dr. Don Kistler, founder of Soli Deo Gloria and now Northampton Publications

"My study of ministry during the 1800's has caused me to love these ministers and their writings. The American Tract Society took theses stories, sermons and messages and published them into a format that gospel messengers could take to the harvest field. Though small, these tracts contain more meat of the word and truth than books many times their size." - John A. Wega, Executive Director, U.S. Christian Commission-Civil War Museum Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

BEYOND AMAZING GRACE
Timeless Pastoral Wisdom from the Letters, Hymns & Sermons of John Newton
J. Todd Murray

No one who knew John Newton as a young lad would ever have dreamed that this teenage rebel, profane sailor, naval deserter and slave-trader would one day write the lyrics to one of the best-known hymns of all time, 'Amazing Grace'. The story of how such a notorious sinner was converted to Christ and went on to become an equally noteworthy pastor and a leader of the Evangelical movement in eighteenth-century England is simply astounding. In compiling this selection from his writings, Todd Murray has made NewtonÆs gentle pastoral wisdom available to a new generation of readers.

J. Todd Murray has been the pastor overseeing the worship and music of The Bible Church of Little Rock since 1983 where, in addition to composing and recording music for his local congregation, he also shares in the general pastoral duties, teaching and shepherding. Todd is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute and Moody Graduate School. He and his wife Tandy have been blessed with five children.

"While John Newton is known primarily as the author of the Hymn, 'Amazing Grace' he was actually a very competent physician of the soul, both in diagnosing its ills, and providing the Scriptural remedy. Unfortunately our current Christian public has benefited little from the work of this amazing man. Now Todd Murray has done us an outstanding favor by making available to us both the writings and the hymns of Newton. I highly commend this book and look forward to reading it many times." - Jerry Bridges, author, The Pursuit of Holiness

"This is a fascinating digest of insights from John Newton's lesser-known hymns and writings. What stands out most in Newton's post-conversion character is the depth of his interest in biblical truth, sound doctrine and systematic theology. Almost from the moment he was changed by God's amazing grace, Newton was driven by a heartfelt passion for understanding the truth and proclaiming it to others with the utmost clarity and simplicity. That, as much as any other characteristic, made him one of the great English hymn-writers of all time. You will be both moved and invigorated as you read it, too, I am certain." - Dr John MacArthur, Pastor-Teacher, Grace Community Church

"Ex-slave-trader John Newton was the friendliest, wisest, humblest and least pushy of all the eighteenth-century evangelical leaders, and was perhaps the greatest pastoral letter-writer of all time. Beyond Amazing Grace gives us Newton's heart, and what a heart it was! This book is pure gold." - J. I. Packer, Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

THE CHRISTIAN IN COMPLETE ARMOR
William Gurnall

"If I might read only one book beside the Bible, I would choose The Christian in Complete Armour." - John Newton

"Peerless and priceless; every line is full of wisdom; every sentence is suggestive . . . . The best thought-breeder in all our library." - C.H. Spurgeon

"I believe The Christian in Complete Armour . . . should be in the library of everyman and woman of God. No Christian leader, teacher, pastor, evangelist, or Christian worker should be without it." - David Wilkerson

At a time in England when loyalty to Scripture placed Christians in the center of the nation's wars, Gurnall was more concerned with the souls of his people than the issues of conflicting political parties. Compiled from his many sermons on 'the saints' war against the devil,' his exhaustive exposition of Ephesians 6:10-20 treats the spiritual battles of believers and their God-given protection.

Originally written in three volumes (1655-1662), the book first covers the Christian's call to arms and describes the nature of the battle and the character of our enemy. The various pieces of godly armor and weapons, and their use on offense and defense, are then described at length, item by item and verse by verse. More pastoral and practical than theological, Gurnall's work is filled with spiritual insight, encouraging exhortation, and inspiring word pictures concerning the importance of doctrinal truth as 'a girdle for the mind, the power of holiness, the pre-eminence of faith against other graces,' and much more.

Profoundly biblical and as relevant today as it was almost 350 years ago, GurnallÆs work is a resource that will add grace to the library of Calvinist and Arminian alike. This edition includes an introduction and biography of Gurnall by J.C. Ryle.

Also subtitled , A Treatise Of the Saints' War against the Devil: Wherein a Discovery is made of that grand Enemy of God and his People, in his Policies, Power, Seat of his Empire, Wickedness, and chief design he hath against the Saints. A Magazine Opened, From whence the Christian is furnished with Spiritual Arms for the Battle, helped on with his Armour, and taught the use of his Weapon: together with the happy issue of the whole War.

HEROES: Edwards, Whitefield, Newton, Charles, Spurgeon and More
Iain Murray

Description: The Bible no more knows a separate class of heroes than it does of saints. Because of Jesus Christ, every christian is extraordinary and attains to glory. Yet grace so shines in some (as in the portraits of Hebrews 11), that it lightens the path of many. As A.W. Tozer could write, 'Next to the Holy Scriptures, the greatest aid to the life of faith may be christian biographies.'

Iain Murray has already written on a number of Christians he specially admires. A few of them return to these pages, but with special reference to their thought - George Whitefield on Christian unity, for example. Most space, howver, is given to little-known figures, including Robert Kalley and William Hewitson who shared in 'the greatest happening in modern missions', and to Charles and Mary Colcock Jones who took much-loved slaves with them to heaven.

There is much new research in these pages, and reminders of how much is missed by those who fail to read of the work of God in history. Christians who know what Christ did 'yesterday' are energized to trust and serve him today.

TRAVELS WITH WILLIAM TYNDALE
England's greatest Bible translator
Brian Edwards

Melvyn Bragg in The Adventure of English claims that William Tyndale wrote æthe most influential book there has ever been in the history of language, English or any other.Æ That is not too extravagant to describe the significance of TyndaleÆs translation into English of the whole of the New Testament and much of the Old from the original Greek and Hebrew. Tyndale is undoubtedly one of the greatest Englishmen ever, and all who speak this language owe him a great debt.

WISE COUNSEL: John Newton's Letters to John Ryland, Jr.
John Newton, compiled by Dr. Grant Gordon

Description: John Newton (1725-1807) has rightly been called 'the letter-writer par excellence of the Evangelical Revival'. Newton himself seems to have come to the conclusion, albeit reluctantly, that letter-writing was his greatest gift. In a letter to a friend he confessed, 'I rather reckoned upon doing more good by some of my other works than by my 'Letters', which I wrote without study, or any public design; but the Lord said, 'You shall be most useful by them,' and I learned to say, 'Thy will be done! Use me as Thou pleasest, only make me useful.' Indeed, he wrote to his close friend William Bull that if the letters were 'owned to comfort the afflicted, to quicken the careless, to confirm the wavering, I may rejoice in the honour He has done me', and not envy the greatest writers of the age.

All but ten of the letters in the present volume have been brought out of undeserved obscurity by Dr Grant Gordon, whose researches in libraries and archives, as well as in little-known nineteenth-century periodicals, have uncovered much material which is certainly calculated to comfort, quicken, and confirm. Of those already in print, one letter is in volume 1 of the Trust's six-volume edition of Newton's Works, and nine more are in volume 2. Three of the nine are also in the Trust's Letters of John Newton, edited by Josiah Bull. The rest should be new to almost all readers.

The particular recipient of Newton's 'wise counsel' in this book was John Ryland, Jr. (1753-1825), Baptist pastor and educator, and close friend of Andrew Fuller, William Carey, and all the pioneers of the modern missionary movement. But in the background stand all the major figures of the eighteenth-century Evangelical Revival. A list of Newton's friends and correspondents would, in fact, read like a 'who's who' of the Revival. And forming the wider background is a very eventful period of history, from the American Revolution to the French Revolutionary Wars, by way of the colonization of Australia, the first missions to India, and the abolition of the slave trade. Dr Gordon has helpfully set the letters in the context of these events and provided useful background detail.

The reader will discover afresh in these letters, not only mature and wise counsel, but a wholesome emphasis on true Christian experience, a great breadth of Christian sympathy, and a strong confidence in the power of the grace of God, for, as Newton said, 'Grace has long and strong arms!'

HEROES OF THE REFORMATION
Life-Changing Lessons for the Young
Richard Newton

William G. Blaikie wrote the following words about the author of this book on Heroes of the Reformation, "In preaching to the young, Dr. Newton has attained the first rank in this department of work. The American mind has such a proclivity to sharp, terse forms of expression, clever analogies and illustrations, keen analysis of feelings, vivid description and warm coloring, that we do not wonder tghat it should excel in addresses to which such qualities contribute so largely."

This volume includes brief but very informative sketches on the likes of Wycliffe, Huss, Savonarola, Luther, Melancthon, Tyndale, Edward the Sixth, John Fox, Latimer and Ridley, Cranmer, Knox, Zwingli, Calvin, Farel, Alasco, Gustaus Adolphus and several others.

In the words of the author, "There is nothing more helpful to us, in seeking to serve God, than to try and learn the practical lessons which we find illustrated in the lives of the good and holy men, who have been a blessing to the church and to the world through their faithful labors. The 'Heroes of the Reformation' belong to this class, and these sketches of their noble lives are sent forth in the earnest hope that through God's blessing they may prove useful to the young who are trying to serve him."

Richard Newton

"These graphic sketches of the 'Heroes of the Early Church' are the latest series penned by the distinguished author, whom Spurgeon fittingly called 'The Prince of Children's Preachers.' Rice, from the Preface

ELDERS IN CONGREGATIONAL LIFE
Rediscovering the Biblical Model for Church Leadership
Phil Newton

Self-government and autonomy are long-standing cherished traditions of most evangelical churches. Ideally this means each member participates in decision making, but in reality pure congregationalism is unwieldy and unworkable. Pastors try to solve the problem by assuming more and more authority themselves. Neither approach is biblical.

A biblically functioning church requires intentional devotion to the New Testament model of church leadership. In this practical book, experienced pastor Phil Newton examines this biblical model of leadership by explaining the necessity of elder plurality and how it functions in a congregational setting. Newton presents the history of elder plurality in Baptist life from personal experience, expounds three biblical texts to shed light on the New Testament model for spiritual leaders, and provides answers to commonly asked questions.

"We live in a world of sin, and hence in a world of sorrow, for 'Man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.' It is the design of this volume to aid in this comforting work." - from Editor's Preface

THE COMPLETE DUTY OF MAN
a System of Doctrinal and Practical Christianity
Designed for the Use of Families
Henry Venn

Originally published in 1763 "The Complete Duty of Man" by Henry Venn went through numerous editions and many alterations of style and arrangement during the author's lifetime. This edition is taken from the fifth and definitive edition which was prepared by his son John and printed and published in 1798. This edition was republished with revised proofs as the standard edition in London in 1838.

"Henry Venn's The Complete Duty of Man is a masterpiece of practical theology. On almost every page, the reader is challenged to stop and reflect on Venn's incisive and rich observations. Any part is worth the price of the whole. The recurring theme is dependence on Christ in walking with God; but there isn't a hint of the antinomianism that often mars modern expositions of this grand theme. In the best sense of these words, this volume is Reformed, Puritan, and Experimental." - Dr. Robert Paul Martin

This has been regarded as one of the most popular and useful manuals of practical divinity ever produced in the English language. According to the Prefatory Note: "The tenor of the work now presented to the christian public is in beautiful consistence with that of Mr. Venn's published sermons. It places things in their proper order, preparing the way to christian 'practice' by christian 'faith,' and to christian faith by heartfelt 'conviction of sin.' It consider all attempts to promote holiness of living as defective, in which the cross of Christ is not laid at the foundation, and constantly kept in view; every duty being enforced as having relation to the Redeemer, his instructions and example, and above all, his atoning sacrifice."

"God, in his sovereign grace and providential wisdom, raised up a cohort of remarkable preachers of the gospel in the eighteenth century. Men such as William Grimshaw, John Newton, William Romainse, Samuel Walker, Daniel Rowland and George Whitefield were very different individuals with varied gifts. But they were together on the core essentials of the gospel, which has often been well summarized as ruin by the Fall, redemption by the death of Christ, and regeneration by the Spirit. Among this group of "burning and shining lights" must be numbered Henry Venn. The gospel he preached--and the other men just named--is detailed in these pages. This is a classic exposition of the gospel, its theological shape and content, and the nature of its impact. Without this gospel, there can be no togetherness in Christ. Iin this day of confusion about gospel essentials, this is a vital reminder from the past about the sort of preaching and teaching God blesses." - Dr. Michael Haykin

Henry Venn (1725 - 1797), English evangelical divine, was born at Barnes, Surrey, and educated at Cambridge. He was one of the founders of the Clapham Sect, a small but highly influential evangelical group within the Anglican Church.

He took orders in 1747, and was elected fellow of Queens College, Cambridge, in 1749. After holding a curacy at Barton, Cambridgeshire, he became curate of St Matthew, Friday Street, London, and of West Horsley, Surrey, in 1750, and then of Clapham in 1754. In the preceding year he was lecturer of St Swithins, Londod Stone. He was vicar of Huddersfield from 1759 to 1771, when he exchanged to the living of Yelling, Huntingdonshire.

Besides being a leader of the evangelical revival, he was well known as the author of The Compleat Duty of Man (London, 1763), a work in which he intended to supplement the teaching embodied in the anonymous Whole Duty of Man. A portrait of him, by John Russell, hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London.

His son, John Venn (1750-1813), was one of the founders of the Church Missionary Society.

BIBLE JEWELS

"Natural jewels are so valuable that many of us can never afford to buy them. Nor is this necessary, for we can be happy without them. But these BIBLE JEWELS are a thousand times more valuable, and without them we cannot be happy. Yet valuable as they are, the poorest person who reads this book, whether young or old, may become the owner of all the Bible jewels of which it speaks. And this is the reason why this book was written. The hope and prayer of the writer is that everyone who reads these pages may try to get all these precious Bible jewels." - from the Author's Preface

BIBLE MODELS
The Shining Lights of Scripture Applied to Children
Richard Newton

"Our dear Father in heaven has filled His blessed book - the Bible - with interesting histories of the lives and characters of great and good men who have been His servants and followers from the beginning of the world; so that we, who live in these later times, may learn of their thoughts and actions and be made better by them. The Apostle James shows us the use God intends we shall make of these histories, when he says: 'Take, my brethren, the prophets for an example.' This means we should study the lives of the holy men of whom we read in the Bible, until we get the model points of their character impressed upon our minds; and then by the grace of God we may be able to bring these virtues forth again in our own hearts and lives.

"The author of this book has endeavored to place before young readers, in a clear and forcible manner, the admirable traits of character possessed by some of the great men of the Bible. The advantages to be gained by following these BIBLE MODELS are plainly shown by many interesting stories drawn from actual life. It is hoped that not only young, but older persons also will find pleasure as well as profit in the pages of this volume; and that, perhaps, as they become familiar with the lofty examples held up to their gaze, their hearts will go out in earnest prayer that 'God may give them grace to follow His blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, so they may come to the unspeakable joys which he has prepared for those who unfeignedly love Him.'" - from the Author's Preface

LEAVES FROM TREE OF LIFE
Sermons for Children
Richard Newton

"This book has much to say about healing. And to souls diseased by sin, as ours are, this is a matter of the greatest importance. We see its importance when we remember that one of the sweet names by which our blessed Savior is spoken of in the Old Testament is JEHOVAH-ROPHI, or 'The Lord who healeth.' The chief means that He makes use of in healing souls is the truth about Jesus, of which the Bible tells us. 'He sent His word, and healed them,' says David. It is more than 20 years ago since the writer of this book first engaged in the work of preaching to children, and making books of sermons. He was first led to do this by thinking on the words of Jesus to Peter, 'Lovest Thou me? Feed my lambs.' This is the twelfth volume he has been permitted to publish. This new volume is now sent forth as an expression of the writer's cordial love to the lambs of Jesus everywhere." - from the Author's Preface

THE GIANTS AND HOW TO FIGHT THEM
Lessons for Children of All Ages
Richard Newton

"There are giants in the earth in these days; and God expects us all to engage in the work of trying to fight them. When I speak of giants now, I do not mean physical giants, but moral giants. I do not mean men with huge bodies, four or five times larger than common-sized men; but I mean great sins of different kinds, which may well be called giants. I want now to speak about five giants that we should all unite trying to fight against. One of these is a good way off from us; but the rest are very near us. Listen to me while I tell you who these giants are, and the way in which we must try to fight them." - from the Author's Introduction

THE LETTERS OF JOHN NEWTON
John Newton

John Newton (1725-1807), converted slave-trader, preacher, and hymn-writer, was one of the most colourful figures in the Evangelical Awakening of the eighteenth century. 'Once an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa', he once wrote for his epitaph, 'by the rich mercy of Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had long laboured to destroy.'

It was through his prolific correspondence that Newton fulfilled his distinctive work as 'the letter-writer par excellence of the Evangelical Revival'. His grasp of Scripture and deep personal experience of the 'amazing grace' of God, his many friends (among them, Whitefield, Cowper and Wilberforce), his many and varied trials, his country pastorate, his strong, clear, idiomatic style; all these factors combined to prepare the author of 'How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds', for the exercise of his special gift.

These letters, selected by his biographer, Josiah Bull, bear the practical imprint of all of Newton's writings; they cover a wide variety of subjects and aim 'to conform the believer to Christ'. Among them are several that were not previously published in earlier collections of his correspondence. Of particular value and interest are the biographical sketches and historical notes supplied by the editor.

THE DIARY & JOURNAL OF DAVID BRAINERD
Jonathan Edwards

The Diary and Journal of David Brainerd (1718-1747) is of much more than merely historical interest. The first internationally recognized biography to be printed in America, the first full missionary biography ever to be published, it has had a profound impact on successive generations of Christians around the world. Few books have done so much to promote prayer and missionary action as the Life of Brainerd, and it is not without good reason that it has remained in print since the great New England pastor and theologian Jonathan Edwards first published it in 1749.

Between 1742 and his death in 1747 David Brainerd took the gospel to the North American Indians in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. He willingly ran any risk and accepted any hardship to fulfill his calling as a missionary. The amount of work which he achieved in such unpromising and difficult circumstances now seems almost incredible. His total dedication to the cause of making Christ known inspired the finest of missionaries who followed in his footsteps: William Carey, who loved Brainerd's writings, confessed, 'I was much humbled today by reading Brainerd. O, what a disparity betwixt me and him! He always constant; I as inconstant as the wind.' Henry Martyn said of Brainerd, "Oh! Blessed be the memory of that beloved saint! No uninspired writer ever did me so much good.' Today his life continues to minister encouragement to the servants of God, as John Piper testifies, 'for meà Brainerd's life is a vivid, powerful testimony to the truth that God can and does use weak, sick, discouraged, beat-down, lonely, struggling saints, who cry to him day and night, to accomplish amazing things for his glory.'

JOHN PIPER: "Brainerd's life is a vivid, powerful testimony to the truth that God can and does use weak, sick, discouraged, beat-down, lonely, struggling saints, who cry to him day and night, to accomplish amazing things for his glory."

JOHN NEWTON: "Next to the Word of God, I like those books best which give account of the lives and experiences of his people. No book of this kind has been more welcome to me than the life of Mr. Brainerd of New England."

HENRY MARTYN: "David Brainerd. Oh! Blessed be the memory of that beloved saint! No uninspired writer ever did me so much good."

ROBERT M. M'CHEYNE: "Life of Brainerd. Most wonderful man! O to have BrainerdÆs heart for perfect holiness!"

WILLIAM CAREY, WILLIAM WARD, JOSHUA MARSHMAN: "Let us often look at Brainerd in the woods of America, pouring out his very soul before God for the perishing heathen without whose salvation nothing could make him happy."

BIBLE BLESSINGS
Lessons for Children on the Rich Blessings in the Bible
Richard Newton

"In preparing this little volume I feel as if I had been doing very much the same thing that was done by the spies that Moses sent into the promised land. I have been walking, as it were, through the pleasant fields of the Bible, and gathering specimens of its blessings. The Bible is a book of blessings. It is intended to make people happy in this life, as well as in the life to come. It would take, not one book merely, but a library of books, to tell all the blessings spoken of in the Bible. If the few samples of them here presented shall lead any one who reads this book to love the Bible more, and to seek a larger share in its rich blessings, I shall feel abundantly rewarded for the labor bestowed upon it." - from the Author's Preface

Richard Newton was called "The Prince of Preachers to the young" by no less than Charles H. Spurgeon.

Some of the messages in this volume are as follows:

THE BLESSEDNESS OF HEARING THE GOSPEL

HOW JESUS BLESSES MEN

THE BLESSEDNESS OF BEING A CHRISTIAN

TROUBLES TURNED TO BLESSINGS

THE BLESSEDNESS OF TRUSTING GOD

THE BLESSING OF MEEKNESS

THE BLESSING OF ENDURING TEMPTATION

JOHN NEWTON: From Disgrace to Amazing Grace
Jonathan Aitken

Most Christians know John Newton as a man who once captained a slave ship, was dramatically converted to Christ on the high seas, and later penned one of the greatest hymns of the faith, 'Amazing Grace.' But he also had a huge impact on his times as an icon of the evangelical movement, as a great preacher and theologian, and as a seminal influence on abolitionist William Wilberforce. Newton's friendship with Wilberforce is portrayed in the major motion picture Amazing Grace.

Jonathan Aitken's new biography John Newton explores all these facets of Newton's life and character. It is the first biography to draw on Newton's unpublished diaries and correspondence, providing fresh insight into the life of this complex and memorable Christian. The result is a fascinating, colorful, and historically significant portrait of John Newton, a self-described 'great sinner' redeemed by a great Savior through amazing grace.

"A new life of John Newton is a fitting celebration of the bicentennial both of Newton's death and of the abolition of the slave trade, Wilberforce's triumph in which Newton played a key role. Master biographer Jonathan Aitken is in fine form, sympathetic, insightful, scholarly, and vivid, and his book, like its subject, must be rated spectacular." -J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College

"A riveting historical account of the life of this notorious eighteenth-century sinner who was dramatically saved by God's grace. This book should be required reading for any person who loves history, loves the song, and is serious about following Christ." - The Honorable Jack Kemp, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; former U.S. Congressman

"A rip-roaring adventure, a passionate romance, and an astonishing journey of faith all in one. I knew the story well, but this telling made a deep impression on me." - Os Guinness, author of The Call

"Jonathan Aitken's fast-paced, well-researched, and detailed book shows why Newton was such an important figure. This is a book to read, ponder, and read again." - Mark Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History, University of Notre Dame

"A fresh, insightful, and inspiring account of this great figure. With that rare skill of a superb biographer, Aitken brings Newton to life for a new generation of admirers." - Alister McGrath, Professor of Historical Theology, Oxford University

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH
Selected and Arranged Under Different Heads
Richard Newton, Editor

"The design of this arrangement is two-fold: first, to throw into a more convenient form the treasures of the Prayer Book, for the use of clergymen, on those frequent occasions when they are called upon to address the throne of grace, independently of the stated services of the sanctuary; and, secondly, to aid both ministers and private christians, in bringing into more general use the beautiful and inimitable prayers which the Church has provided. Rich as they are in Scriptural language, and endeared by a thousand sweet and hallowed associations, it can hardly fail to aid the devotion and strengthen the piety of any member of the Church, if he shall seek to be more thoroughly imbued with the spirit of these prayers; and if, in approaching the throne of grace, he shall cultivate the habit of clothing his thoughts, giving utterance to his desires in these consecrated words." -from Preface by Richard Newton

PEBBLES FROM THE BROOK
Sermons to Children Fighting the Good Fight of Faith
Richard Newton

"We all have giants to fight. Every form of sin is such a giant. We can only succeed in this warfare by following David's example. The brook, to which we must go for our pebbles, is the word of God. Every portion of truth from this word is a pebble for our use in this warfare. When Jesus, the Captain of our salvation, went forth into the wilderness, to be tempted of Satan, he was fighting the great father of all the giants. He fought and conquered him with pebbles from this brook. And if we seek the help of God, to enable us to use these pebbles, as our blessed master did, we shall be successful as he was." - from the Author's Preface

The sermons in this volume are as follows:

THE BEST CAPTAIN - Hebrews 2:10

THE BEST OF ALL BLESSINGS - Proverbs 3:15

HOW THE BIRDS PRAISE GOD - Matthew 6:26

THE DAY-SPRING'S VISIT - Luke 1:78

THE GOOD SOLDIER - 2 Timothy 2:3

NATURE'S WONDERS
Sermons to Children on How God's Works Praise Him
Richard Newton

"This volume is sent forth as an experiment. It goes but a little way into the great department to which it refers. It only presents a few flowers, gathered as specimens from God's great garden. These sermons have cost me more labor than any I have yet published for the young. I trust, however, they may be of service in helping the young to 'look through nature up to nature's God,' and in showing them that the God who speaks so lovingly to us in the Bible is the same God whose wisdom, power and goodness are so wonderfully displayed in the sun, moon, stars, clouds, mountains, seas, rivers, trees, flowers, and other glorioius works around us." - from the Author's Preface

HOW GOD'S WORKS PRAISE HIM - Psalm 145:10

HOW THE SUN PRAISES GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE MOON PRAISES GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE STARS PRAISE GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE STARS PRAISE GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE LIGHT PRAISES GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE AIR PRAISES GOD - Psalm 150:1

HOW THE CLOUDS PRAISE GOD - Exodus 16:10

HOW THE TREES PRAISE GOD - Isaiah 55:12

HOW THE FLOWERS PRAISE GOD - Matthew 6:28

"These volumes abound in religious instruction suitable to young persons, and are presented in a form excellently calculated to engage attention." - The Bookseller

"These bright sermons, studded with anecdote, will gain a loving hearing from the little people." - British Messenger

"Ministers, Sabbath-school teachers, and those who address children's churches, will find much material to help them in the difficult work of presenting religious truth in a form attractive to the young." - United Presbyterian Record

COVENANT NAMES AND PRIVILEGES
A Series of Sermons on the Names of God and Privileges of the Christian
Richard Newton

"The Prince of Preachers to Children" was also a pastor who ministered to the souls of his entire flock. This series of sermons was preached toward the end of his fruitful life, and consists of six sermons on GOD'S COVENANT NAMES and fourteen on CHRISTIAN PRIVILEGES.

A reviewer from that time said the following: "I have read these sermons with great interest. I think they will have a peculiar value to be read in vacant churches, in hospitals, penal institutions etc. They are PLAIN, so that any one can understand them; they are SHORT, so that no one need weary of them; they are LIVELY, and READABLE, and above all, they are TRUE to the Word of God."

BIBLE WONDERS
Sermons to Childen on the Wondrous Things of Scripture
Richard Newton

"The world is full of wonders, if only we had eyes to see them. But there are more wonders in the Bible, and greater wonders, too, then are to be found anywhere else. There are wonders of wisdom here, and wonders of love, and wonders of power, and wonders of goodness that are perfectly surprising. But we need the help of God to enable us to see these wonders. And this is just the help David was trying to get when he offered the prayer, 'Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.' Psalm 119:18. The attempt has been made in this book to speak of a few of these wonders, in the hope that some who read it may be lead to study the Bible with more interest, and try with increasing earnestness to find out more of the wonderful things contained in it." - from the Author's Preface

The "Prince of Preachers to Children" once again opens the Scriptures in a way that will both instruct and entertain everyone who reads it. The subjects include:

"THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL"

"HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED WONDERFUL"

"THERE IS A GOD IN HEAVEN THAT REVEALETH SECRETS"

"I AM THE LIVING BREAD WHICH CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN"

"YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN"

"THE GOLD OF THAT LAND IS GOOD"

"WHATSOEVER YE SHALL ASK THE FATHER IN MY NAME, HE WILL GIVE IT TO YOU."

Letters of John Newton
John Newton

John Newton (1725-1807), sailor, preacher and hymn-writer, was one of the most colorful figures in the great Evangelical Revival of the 18th Century. 'Once an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa', he wrote for his own epitaph, 'by the rich mercy of Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had long labored to destroy.

It was especially through his correspondence that Newton fulfilled his distinctive work, 'as the letter writer par excellance of the Evangelical Revival.' These practical letters cover a wide variety of subjects and aim 'to conform the believer to Christ.' These letters are truly life-changing! 191pp. Paperback.

The Way of Faith
Phil Newton

How does a person become a Christian? How do you answer this question? Some say that a moral life makes one a Christian. Others declare that joining a church or being baptized makes a person a Christian. Still others call for a person to "make a decision" or "pray the prayer" or "ask Jesus into your heart". While opinions may be important, the one vital think when speaking of one becoming a Christian is what does God say in His Word.

God has given His Word--the Bible--to reveal Himself, His purpose for man, and the way to know Him personally. Everything a person needs to know about becoming a Christian can be found in God's Word. As God gives a person understanding of the gospel (the good news of how God, in Christ, has provided salvation), then that person can come to genuine faith in Jesus Christ and, consequently, become a Christian.

The Way of Faith can help you on the journey to understanding the Christian faith. Each section ends with questions for personal study or group discussions.

LECTURES ON THE HISTORY OF PREACHING
John A. Broadus

John A. Broadus (1827-1895) delivered these five lectures in May of 1876 at Newton Theological Institute near Boston, and they immediately caused a stir of interest for their publication. It was lectures like these which later moved his student E.C. Dargan to desire to spend his life studying the history of preaching. This eventually led Dargan to write his two volume massive work on "A History of Preaching" (recently published by Solid Ground).

Lecture 1: Specimens of Preaching in the Bible

Lecture 2: Preaching in the Early Christian Centuries

Lecture 3: Medieval and Reformation Preaching

Lecture 4: The Great French Preachers

Lecture 5: The English Pulpit

"This volume covers a most neglected field, and handles the subject with great skill." A.T. Robertson

LETTERS TO AN ADOPTED DAUGHTER
John Newton

This small volume contains two precious works of John Newton, best known for his hymn "Amazing Grace." Newton and his wife were childless, but they were privileged to be able to adopt two of Mrs. Newtron's nieces, Elizabeth Catlett and Eliza Cunningham. The main portion of this work is called Letters to an Adopted Daughter, which contains 21 letters Newton wrote to Elizabeth while she was away at school. In the Preface we are told, "The following pleasing effusions of Mr. Newton's affectionate heart cannot fail to engage the attention of the young; they contain suggestions and counsel of great value, whether regard be had to the present or future life."

In addition to these 21 letters to Elizabeth, Newton wrote a tribute to Eliza who died at an early age. He perpetuated the memory of her piety and virtue in a brief memoir, which is remarkable for the beautiful simplicity of its style and the loveliness of the character which it delineates.
