 | | | | PREPARED BY GRACE, FOR GRACE The Puritans on God's Ordinary Way of Leading Sinners to Christ Joel Beeke with Paul Smalley
Few teachings of the Puritans have provoked such strong reactions and conflicting interpretations as their views on preparing for saving faith. Many twentieth-century scholars dismissed preparation as a prime example of regression from the Reformed doctrine of grace for a man-centered legalism. In 'Prepared by Grace, for Grace,' Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley make careful analysis of the Puritan understanding of preparatory grace, demonstrate its fundamental continuity with the Reformed tradition, and identify matters where even the Puritans disagreed among themselves. Clearing away the many misconceptions and associated accusations of preparationism, this study is sure to be the standard work on how the Puritans understood the ordinary way God leads sinners to Christ.

 Table of Contents:
 Introduction: The Question of Preparationism
 1. Preparation and Modern Scholarship
 2. Precedents to Puritan Preparation: Augustine to Calvin
 3. Preparation and Early English Puritans: Perkins, Sibbes, and Preston
 4. Preparation for Conversion: William Ames
 5. Preparation in Early New England (I): Thomas Hooker
 6. Preparation in Early New England (II): Shepard and Pemble
 7. Preparation and the Antinomian Controversy: John Cotton
 8. Preparation at the Pinnacle of Puritanism: Westminster, Burroughs, and Guthrie
 9. Preparation under a Scholastic Lens: Norton
 10. Preparation and Later Puritan Critiques: Goodwin and Firmin
 11. Later Puritan Preparation: Flavel and Bunyan
 12. Jonathan Edwards and Seeking God
 13. Continental Reformed Perspectives: Zwingli to Witsius
 14. The Grace of Preparation for Faith
Appendix: William Ames's Theological Disputation on Preparation
"I can think of no abler team of writers in the world today to tackle the important issue of preparatory grace, with all of its attendant law-gospel implications, than Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley. As with legalism, preparatory grace suffers from verbal abuse - partly through ignorance of the real issues, and partly through prejudice for its supposed attempt to usurp gospel grace. Beeke and Smalley have provided us with a plethora of historical and theological material to enable us to walk through this controversial but important issue. It has been suggested that to understand the relationship between law and gospel is to be a theologian; on this score, these authors are theologians par excellence." - Derek W. H. Thomas, professor of systematic and historical theology, RTS Atlanta, and minister for preaching and teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina
"Prepared by Grace, for Grace is a truly remarkable book. Many have referred to Puritan 'preparation for grace,' but hardly at all with serious scholarly attention given to the original sermons or writings. But here is finally a study that is both thorough and fair. We learn that preparation can mean many different things, with diverse theological settings. But the vital issue is still with us today: If people are dead in sin, how can we continue to talk to them?
Reformed people sometimes find it hard to put together thinking theologically and doing effective evangelism. If unbelievers are really dead in sin, what's the point? Can evangelism be more than just mouthing words that no one understands? Francis Schaeffer's 'pre-evangelism' had much the same agenda as 'preparation,' making it clear to us again that we all must address these concerns as we work within our nihilistic culture. This book gives us a flying start." - D. Clair Davis, professor and chaplain, Redeemer Seminary, Dallas

Authors- Joel R. Beeke is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, and a pastor of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Paul M. Smalley is a teacher's assistant for Dr. Beeke

 | | | | LIFE IN CHRIST Becoming and Being a Disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ Jeremy Walker
'To be a disciple of Jesus Christ is to be in a position of privilege and blessing beyond anything the world might offer,' begins author Jeremy Walker. Life in Christ explores the unsearchable riches of the Christian pilgrimage and traces its trajectory, highlighting key elements in the believer's experience. Do you wrestle with assurance? Have you grasped the engagement demanded in Christian living? Do you find the way wearying at times? Do you struggle with your Christian identity? Walker provides instruction for Christians to assess their own standing and progress in the faith; exhorting and equipping and always pointing them ahead to the hope of the glory of Christ. Along the way, he encourages God's people to live a life to the praise of His glory as he examines some of the basic truths that establish and direct a true child of God.
 Table of Contents:
 1.Looking to Jesus
 2.United to Christ
 3.The Unsearchable Riches of Christ
 4.Sons of God
 5.The Jewel of Assurance
 6.The Marks of God's Children
 7.A Work in Progress
 8.A Life in Review
Author Jeremy Walker is a pastor of Maidenbower Baptist Church in Crawley, England, coauthor of A Portrait of Paul: Identifying a True Minister of Christ, and author of The Brokenhearted Evangelist.
Endorsements: "In his new book, my good friend Jeremy Walker, in a most breathtaking way, vividly opens up the beauties and glories of becoming and being a disciple of Christ. In reading this work I was greatly moved and reminded afresh of the wonders of my salvation and was tearfully left praising God for all that He has done in my life. Since no other subject in the Word of God is more important than the one addressed in this volume, I cannot commend it too highly." -Rob Ventura, Pastor, Grace Community Baptist Church, North Providence, Rhode Island, co-author of A Portrait of Paul
"One of the most neglected topics of our day happens to be one of the most essential aspects of our Christian lives: our union with Christ. You will be grateful to know that this gaping hole is being wonderfully filled with Jeremy Walker's new book, Life in Christ. Jeremy writes with a theological precision, exegetical clarity, and pastoral sensitivity that promise this book to be a very useful resource not just for those seeking to grow more in Christ but even unbelievers needing to know why Christ is to be so treasured. Read this book and prepare to be amazed afresh of what it means for us as sinners to be in Christ and partakers of his heavenly reward." - Brian Croft, senior pastor, Auburndale Baptist Church, and founder and ministry development director of Practical Shepherding
"In this splendid book on the very central issues of eternity, Jeremy Walker, like J. C. Ryle of old, carries the reader along with an excellent, gripping style. It is a book that everyone should read; and then pass on to others who need an explanation of the true gospel, especially those slaves of political correctness sadly found in many modern pulpits." - Erroll Hulse, pastor, conference speaker, author, and founding editor of Reformation Today
"In this well-ordered book, Jeremy Walker provides a straightforward presentation of what it is to become and live as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Following Christ is not a matter of secondary importance but should be of critical concern for every reader of this book. Each page is saturated with scriptural truths that are easy to read but challenging to apply regarding this vital subject of discipleship. I highly recommend this work, which is doctrinally sound, persuasively presented, and pastorally related." - Steven J. Lawson, senior pastor, Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, Mobile, Alabama

 | | | | CULTIVATING BIBLICAL GODLINESS SERIES Joel Beeke, Ryan McGraw, Maurice Roberts, Geoff Thomas & Ian Hamilton
Cultivating Biblical Godliness Series - ELEVEN LIFE-CHANGING BOOKLETS

 D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones once said, "The world today is looking for, and desperately needs, true Christians. I am never tired of saying that what the Church needs to do is not to organize evangelistic campaigns and attract outside people, but to begin herself to live the Christian life. If she did that, men and women would be crowding into our buildings. They would say, 'What is the secret of this?'"
Many people who are new to the church need instruction in the most basic aspects of godly living. Even where churches are engaged heavily in discipleship, visitors and members often have gaps in their understanding and practice. One of the greatest needs of our time is for the Spirit of God to cultivate biblical godliness in us in order to put the glory of Christ on display through us, all to the glory of God the Father.
For these reasons, Joel Beeke and Ryan McGraw are coediting a series of booklets titled Cultivating Biblical Godliness. These booklets treat matters that are vital to Christian experience, and each contribution aims to address a wide variety of people and circumstances at a fundamental and introductory level. This includes teaching people what to believe in order to practice personal holiness as well as specific directions on how to cultivate biblical godliness in relation to issues that are common to GodÆs people.
The distinctive feature of this series is its experiential tone. While some booklet series aim to enlighten the mind, these booklets aim to warm the affections as well. The goal is to promote communion with the triune God and to transform the entire person in thought, speech, and behavior. To this end, we intend to include a wide range of authors whom the Spirit has blessed to skillfully stir up the church to personal holiness and affection to Christ through their preaching and writing ministries.
We need a Christianity that puts the transformative power of God in the gospel on display through developing a communion with God that is visible to the world. Our prayer is that through this series, the Lord would revive His church by producing Christians who are full of love for Christ, who deny themselves in order to follow Him at great personal cost, and who know the joys of walking with the triune God. This is the kind of Christianity that we need. This is the kind of Christianity that the triune God has used to turn the world upside down. May He be pleased to do so again.

 | | | | CONTAGIOUS CHRISTIAN LIVING with a Study Guide Dr. Joel Beeke
When some people smile, they ignite smiles in people around them. They have contagious smiles. If thatÆs what a contagious smile is, what is contagious Christian living? It is living that is so godly and so consistent that people around them cannot help but be impacted and inspired. In Contagious Christian Living, Joel R. Beeke looks at four people in the Bible to find out how people today can live an influential life in dependence on the Holy Spirit. Here is your invitation to read about, and pray for, the sacrificial submission of JephthahÆs daughter, the Christ-centeredness of Bartimaeus, the contagious blessings of Jacob, and the consistent integrity of Daniel.
"I wish I could have been there to hear these four marvelous addresses, but Dr. Beeke has kindly provided the material in these pages enabling us all to profit from his customary sure touch and devotional spirit. I know of few preachers alive today who could equal his mastery of the Reformed and Puritan tradition and be able to convey it with such enthusiasm. These addresses, if read with godly submission, will challenge and convict, edify and exhort to a greater love for the Savior and contagious zeal in following His loving commands. I cannot recommend this book too highly." - Derek Thomas
"Growing affection and trust characterize Joel Beeke's ministry at the annual Aberystwyth Evangelical Movement of Wales' Conference. Dr. Beeke's concern was to re-establish his hearers' proper relationship with God through our Savior, and by a newly discovered wonder at this achievement to encourage a fresh and living walk with God that would be contagious in the eyes of the church and world. Read these addresses for yourself and judge how successful our honored brother has been in his messages.- Geoff Thomas

 | | | | CHRISTIANS GET DEPRESSED TOO Dr. David Murray
Many Christians mistakenly believe that true Christians donÆt get depressed, and this misconception heaps additional pain and guilt onto Christians who are suffering from mental and emotional distress. Author David P. Murray comes to the defense of depressed Christians, asserting that Christians do get depressed! He explains why and how Christians should study depression, what depression is, and the approaches caregivers, pastors, and churches can take to help those who are suffering from it. With clarity and wise biblical insight, Dr. Murray offers help and hope to those suffering from depression, the family members and friends who care for them, and pastors ministering to these wounded members of their flock.
"If I felt depressed, 'Christians Get Depressed Too' is the first place I would turn. If I had a family or church member fighting depression, it is the first book I would hand out. This clear, concise, and compassionate book by my esteemed colleague, Dr. David Murray, who has worked in pastoral ministry with many depressed Christians, is disarmingly simple and eminently practical. In these few pages covering the crisis, complexity, condition, causes, and cures of depression, together with advice for the caregiver, you will find a world of sound, wise, scriptural advice for handling a variety of cases of depression. If you fight depression, read and re-read this usable, balanced, and timely book; if you don't fight depression, read it to be informed how to relate to your friends that do, and give a copy to each of them." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke
"I heartily commend this new and helpful book on depression and psychiatric illness. It is the condensed result of much reading and pastoral wisdom, digested into a few non-technical chapters. It is full of Christian love for those who suffer in this way and who need our utmost compassion and tactful sympathy. I wish I had known the things written in these pages when I was a much younger minister." - Maurice Robert

 | | | | PREACHING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT Albert N. Martin
 RHB NEW
Good pastors pray for the Holy SpiritÆs help in preparing biblical sermons that will adequately feed GodÆs sheep. They also hope for the SpiritÆs work in the hearts of the hearers so that they effectively receive the preached Word. But are these the only ways that preachers must depend on the Spirit in their preaching? In this book, Albert N. Martin reminds gospel ministers of their need to rely on the Holy Spirit as they proclaim GodÆs Word. He explains the necessity of the agency and operations of the Holy Spirit, describes its specific manifestations, and discusses ways it is restrained or diminished. Here is a prophetic call to reliance on God in the very act of proclaiming His Word.
"Who better to write a book on preaching in the Holy Spirit than Albert N. Martin? This gifted preacher, long-known for his own passionate expositions, has provided us with this insightful book that details the hallmarks of Spirit-energized preaching. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in expository preaching, but much of it has produced little more than dry, lifeless, tame lecturing. But true preaching, Martin argues, is quite different. Spirit-empowered preaching is delivered with penetrating insight, enlarged affections, deeper certainty, and fervent zeal. Every preacher should periodically read this book on Saturday night before entering the pulpit on Sunday morning." - Steven J. Lawson, Senior Pastor Christ Fellowship Baptist Church Mobile, Alabama

 | | | | Economy of the Covenants Between God and Man (2 volumes): Herman Witsius
Economy of the Covenants Between God and Man (2 volumes):
This, his magnum opus, is a reflection of some of the most fruitful and mature thinking on federal theology during the seventeenth century, and still holds a preeminent place in our own day. Reformed theology has always understand the biblical doctrine of the covenant to be the theological framework which best unifies Scripture, making it a consistent hermeneutic. In this work, Witsius, presents the reader with a fully biblical and experiential doctrine of the divine covenants; opening up their nature, stipulations, curses, and blessings. Anyone interested in Reformed theology should read this book, for it is Reformed theology at its best.

Author Herman Witsius (1636-1708) was Professor of Divinity in the Universities of Franeker, Utrecht, and Leyden. A brilliant and devout student, he was fluent in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew by the age of fifteen, when he entered the University of Utrecht. He was ordained at twenty-one and served in several pastorates, filling both the pulpit and the academic chair over the course of his life.
 Endorsements:
"This is a head-clearing, mind-forming, heart-warming treatise of very great value; we possess nothing like it today, and to have it available once more is a real boon. I commend it enthusiastically to God's people everywhere." - J.I. Packer
"It is works such as these that take us beyond milk to the meat of the Word. If you want to know what confessional Reformed theology and piety looks like and how we understood Scripture before Barth turned the tradition upside down there are few authors whose work will repay your investment of time and money more completely than Herman Witsius." - R.S. | | | | TAKING HOLD OF GOD Reformed and Puritan Perspectives on Prayer Edited by Joe Beeke and Brian Najapfour
In 'Taking Hold of God', you will enter the treasury of the church of Jesus Christ and discover some of its most valuable gems on the subject of Christian prayer. The writings of the Reformers and Puritans shine with the glory of God in Christ, offering us much wisdom and insight today that can make our own prayer lives more informed, more extensive, more fervent, and more effectual. Six contemporary scholars explore the writings and prayer lives of several Reformers and Puritans-among them Martin Luther, John Calvin, William Perkins, Matthew Henry, and Jonathan Edwards-guiding us to growth in prayer and a more grateful communion with God.
 Endorsements:
"Taking Hold of Godis a veritable gold mine on the subject of prayer. Beeke and Najapfour have brought together in one volume the teaching on prayer of the giants of the Reformation and Puritan eras: Luther, Calvin, Knox, Perkins, Bunyan, Henry, Edwards, and others. I was personally encouraged and stimulated to take my own prayer life to a higher and hopefully more productive level. All believers who have any desire to pray effectively will profit from this book." -Jerry Bridges, author of The Pursuit of Holiness
"Together, Beeke and Najapfour have produced a marvelously helpful and instructive volume on prayer drawn from such giants as Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Bunyan, Matthew Henry, and Jonathan Edwards. It is a veritable potpourri of spiritual insight and godly advice. Books on prayer often induce more guilt than help. Taking Hold of God, as the title itself suggests, aims at doing the latter. It beckons us, allures us, into the challenge of prayer itself: laying hold of a gracious Father who longs for our presence and delights to commune with His children. Publisher Description: How will you triumph when your heart is left trembling?
To some degree, everyone experiences fear. It impacts the decisions we make and leaves us feeling helpless. John Flavel begins this book by examining various fears and discussing general ways God governs it in this world. He then turns to sinful fear in particular, explaining its causes and disastrous effects. His longest chapter discusses rules for dealing with sinful fear, showing how a proper fear of God is the ultimate remedy for all other fears. This practical book will help you avoid making excuses for sinful fear and encourage you to trust in Christ's commitment to settle His people's feeble and trembling hearts.

 | | | | PARENTING BY GOD'S PROMISES How to Raise Children in the Covenant of Grace Joel R. Beeke
Many parents today are searching for the secret to successful parenting. In Parenting by God s Promises, Dr. Joel R. Beeke asserts that there is no secret. When it comes to giving children what they need most, new hearts that trust in Christ for forgiveness of sins, parents are helpless. When children come to faith, it is due to the grace of God.
But while parents are helpless, they are not hopeless, for God has promised in His Word to provide all needful things for His people and to bless them and their families. With faith in these grand promises, parents may raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord with confidence that God will work savingly in their lives.
Parenting by God's Promises is a different kind of parenting manual, one that puts parental responsibilities in their proper perspective and guides mothers and fathers to lean not on their own abilities but to trust more fully in the God who knits children together in the first place.
 R. ALBERT MOHLER wrote: "To our great shame, far too many Christians raise their children without much thought as to what makes parenting distinctly Christian. Secular patterns of thought and habit have deeply infected Christian homes, and an antidote is urgently needed. Thankfully, it arrives as 'Parenting by God's Promises' by Joel Beeke."
WAYNE MACK added, "In this book, Dr. Joel Beeke provides information that is in keeping with what we have come to expect from his preaching and writing: biblically based information about parenting, practical illustrations that really illustrate, and specific instructions that will help people to know how to put the directives of Scripture into practice."
VODDIE BAUCHAM said, "In an age of pragmatism, Joel Beeke is a drink of fresh, cool theological water. Raising children is about more than just surviving until they leave him; Beeke reminds us that Christian parents must view their roles in the broader context of God's redemptive work. For those desperate to hear a clear, thoughtful, biblical, theological, Reformed treatise on the subject, 'Parenting by God's Promises is a valuable read."
JOSEPH PIPA stated, "The defection of young people from the church is creating great concern in our day. Oftentimes the solutions seem to exacerbate the problem. Joel Beeke's book 'Parenting by God's Promises,' is a sane, biblical word in the midst of the chaos. The book blends a vibrant covenant theology with wise, practical instruction. Moreover, it keeps a balance between family and church in the nurture of our children. This book is an important read for pastors, elders, parents and grandparents."
Author Joel R. Beeke (Ph.D. Westminster Theological Seminary) is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, pastor of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, editor of The Banner of Sovereign Grace Truth, and author of numerous books.

 | | | | THE DAY OF WORSHIP Reassessing the Christian Life in Light of the Sabbath Ryan M. McGraw
Endorsements "In the last fifteen years, there has been renewed interest in the nature and purpose of the fourth commandment and what many refer to as the Puritan Sabbath. By God's grace a conversation has begun that is helping many come to a fuller appreciation for and use of the Lord's Day. Pastor Ryan McGraw's voice in the conversation needs to be heard. As he says, 'I have sought to address what I believe to be the primary underlying issues behind the widespread neglect of the Sabbath day.' Pastor McGraw's book is chock-full of biblical insights, freshly applied to the issue of the Christian Sabbath. I have been helped by the book and know that each one who reads it will be as well." - Joseph A. Pipa Jr., President, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
"Far too many Christians only believe in nine commandments. The command to keep a day of rest on which to worship our triune covenant Lord is deemed as irrelevant or no longer binding. Providing helpful exegesis and theological consideration, Ryan McGraw gives the church important reasons to recover the abiding validity and necessity of the fourth commandment. Far from being legalistic, McGraw's treatment encourages all Christians to find worship, rest, and a foretaste of heaven to come on each and every LordÆs Day." - J. V. Fesko, Academic Dean and Associate Professor of Systematic Theology Westminster Seminary California
"Ryan McGraw has written a very fresh pastoral teaching on Sabbath observance in his new book, The Day of Worship. He gives us important principles from Scripture for understanding the Christian Sabbath. The book is convincing in its argument that much of what lies behind a dislike of the Sabbath is a tragic love of this world. Practical helps abound for the keeping of the fourth commandment.
'The Day of Worship' does not merely rehash other works on the topic that are available today. If you are well-read on the Sabbath you will find here supplemental material to strengthen your own godliness." - Walter J. Chantry, author of Call the Sabbath a Delight

 | | | | THE HOLY SPIRIT A Biblical, Theological and Pastoral Study Geoff Thomas
The Holy Spirit is often treated as either a dry doctrine for our mouths to recite or raw power to ignite our emotions. Geoff Thomas shows us that the Holy Spirit is both infinitely glorious and intensely personal. Neither a theory nor a force, the Spirit is God and acts as our God in gathering a people to Himself. This book follows the scriptural revelation of the Spirit from Genesis to Pentecost to today, covering such topics as His personality and Deity, His inspiration and anointing in the Old Testament, His conviction and regeneration, the spiritual gifts, putting to death sinful deeds by the Spirit, His sealing, and spiritual revival. It will help believers to know how much the Spirit of God loves them, and will help them to love the Spirit with all their hearts; and with Him, the whole Triune God. It may also help unbelievers to begin to thirst for the living water which they desperately need.

 | | | | THE BROKEN-HEARTED EVANGELIST Jeremy Walker
With a 'gutless orthodoxy,' Christians today quickly affirm biblical truth regarding evangelism and mission, but, author Jeremy Walker reminds us, "we cannot pretend that we know and believe the truth about men, souls, heaven, hell, and salvation unless it is making a difference in the way we think, feel, pray, speak, and act."
How do Christians develop this sense of urgency to see lost sinners saved? What motivates our evangelism? We must have the character of the brokenhearted evangelist, the David of Psalm 51, who recognizes the greatness of his own sin, looks to God for forgiveness, then recognizes his undeniable obligation to teach transgressors God's ways. In an engaging style and with pastoral warmth, Walker urges Christians to exercise their obligation and privilege to teach transgressors God's ways, providing both spiritual truth and practical guidance for carrying out this necessary gospel duty.
 Table of Contents:
 Preface
 1. Am I Willing? Our Undeniable Obligation
 2. Am I Effective? Our Necessary Equipment
 3. Am I Committed? Our Appointed Means
 4. Am I Focused? Our Declared Aim
 5. Am I Fruitful? Our Great Expectation
Author Jeremy Walker is a pastor of Maidenbower Baptist Church in Crawley, England, and co-author of A Portrait of Paul: Identifying a True Minister of Christ.
 ENDORSEMENTS -
"In recent years providence has brought a number of people into my life and ministry who are passionate about evangelism. Some of them are especially keen to win friends, fellow-workers, and family to Christ; others are engaged in various kinds of open-air evangelism, bringing the gospel to people they have never met before. I thank God for all of them and the passion that drives them. This excellent book by Jeremy Walker explains the biblical principles that underlie and provoke such passion, reminding us that time is short, the need is urgent, the laborers are few, and the fields are white unto harvest." - John MacArthur
"Jeremy Walker's book is in the tradition of the Puritan classic, Joseph Alleine's Alarm to the Unconverted, but this is more Jeremy Walker's Alarm to the Converted. It is a pleasant surprise, coming as it does from a part of our world where Christianity has largely entered a 'garrison' (bunker) mode. The book, based on Psalm 51:13, is not meant simply to teach us about evangelism; it demands a verdict. He enlists the help of the great soul winners in history to reinforce his appeals. Even before I finished reading the book, I was already asking myself whether my heart was truly broken about the lost around me - and if it is, what am I doing about it?" - Conrad Mbewe, Pastor, Kabwata Baptist Church, Lusaka, Zambia
"The Broken Hearted Evangelist will refresh, strengthen, and equip the most timid saint for the work of soul winning. Jeremy Walker's consideration of evangelism from the perspective of Psalm 51 is like fresh water drawn from a new well. He does not merely exhort us to greater faithfulness in evangelism and then leave us bewildered and guilty. Instead, he takes us to the very fountain from which all true motivation and strength for evangelism springs forth - the gospel and its glorious impact upon our own lives." - Paul Washer
"The Brokenhearted Evangelist is a challenging call to our great responsibility and glorious privilege of personally sharing the gospel of Christ with others. In this book, Pastor Jeremy Walker does a superb job of showing us from the life of David that mercies received from God are to be a key motivating factor for us telling others about Him. Filled with much practical instruction and penetrating insight, this book is very helpful in teaching us how to become wise in winning souls for Jesus. Would we live up to such a high Biblical calling in our lives? Would we do our Master's bidding as He calls us to? May the Lord be pleased to use this stirring work to these holy and blessed ends." - Rob Ventura, Pastor of Grace Community Baptist Church, Rhode Island

 | | | | GLORY VEILED AND UNVEILED A Heart-searching Look at Christ's Parables GERALD BILKES
"You have likely read the parables of Christ before, perhaps many times. But have they read you?" With this thought-provoking question, author Gerald Bilkes introduces readers to the concept of interpreting the Scriptures experimentally as he takes a heart-searching look at Christ's parables. | | | | A PURITAN THEOLOGY: Doctrine for Life Joel Beeke & Mark Jones
Finally, the perfect companion to MEET THE PURITANS, this volume may be the most thorough volume ever produced on PURITAN THEOLOGY. The first printing of this volume sold out within the first few weeks and a second printing is already available.
Pastor Rob Ventura has said the following: ""What did the Puritans believe about God's providence and the perseverance of the saints? What were their views on conscience and Christ's intercession for us? In 'A Puritan Theology' compiled by Dr. Joel R. Beeke and Mark Jones, we have the answers to these and many other questions. In this unique one volume work we have a robust systematic theology drawn from the teachings of the most beloved Puritans: an outstanding achievement indeed! This resource is a must read for every pastor, seminarian and serious student of the Reformed Faith. It will be a volume that I turn to again and again."
Joel Beeke begins the Introduction with these words: "The word 'Puritan' originated in the 1560s as a bit of pejorative hurled at people who wanted further reformation in the Church of England. While some social historians think the term should be abandoned due to the various ways it was used during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, others who identify themselves as Reformed or Calvinistic defend the continuing use of the terms 'Puritan' and 'Puritanism.'
This book is about Puritan theology. Its chapters will address various areas of the systematic theology of Puritanism. Fine studies on Puritan theology already exist. Some address the Puritans in general, and some focus on the work of a particular Puritan theologian. To date, however, there has been no single work that provides an overview of Puritan thought concerning Scripture's major doctrines, historically and systematically considered. We hope this book will fill that gap. We will begin by stating what we will and will not cover, and why."

 | | | | THE GOSPEL'S POWER & MESSAGE: Recovering the Gospel: Volume One PAUL WASHER
 Publisher's Description:
One of the greatest crimes of this generation of Christians is our neglect of the gospel, and it is from this neglect that all our other maladies spring forth. Absent from too many pulpits are the essential themes that make up the very core of the gospel-the justice of God, the radical depravity of man, and the blood atonement. In The GospelÆs Power and Message, Paul Washer addresses these essential elements of ChristÆs good news and provides a guide to help us rediscover the gospel in all its beauty, scandal, and saving power. May such a rediscovery transform your life, strengthen your proclamation, and bring the greatest glory to God.
 Endorsements:
"In these days of insipid, man-centered, ear-tickling preaching, we need Sons of Thunder who fear God and faithfully preach His Word without fear of consequences. My friend Paul Washer is one such man. May God use this book to reach the lost and to glorify His name." - Ray Comfort, author of Hell's Best Kept Secret and The Way of the Master
"In The Gospel's Power and Message, Paul Washer unwraps the gospel and displays its various facets in all their vivid glory. This book is a thoughtful, poignant reminder that the message Christ commissioned us to proclaim is neither spongy nor trivial. Nor can it be improved by human revision. The gospel may be a stumbling block to some and seem like foolishness to others - but to those who are called, it is the power and the wisdom of God." -Phil Johnson, executive director of Grace to You
"I am profoundly thankful for the courageous clarity of The Gospel's Power and Message by Paul Washer. Christians today seem to have the false impression that the gospel is all about us - a wonderful plan for our lives; a means of finding peace, joy, or personal fulfillment; the way to get to heaven. Those blessings (and many more) are aspects of every true gospel-believer's birthright, of course. But they are not the point or the main objective of the message. The gospel is about God and His eternal glory. That is where it starts, and that is where it takes us in the end. Preached rightly, the gospel convicts and humbles every human heart. It underscores the exceeding sinfulness of our sin. It rebukes even our most laudable works of righteousness. The gospel is simple enough for a child to grasp, but its truths are inexhaustible. In short, the gospel is the best of all good news and the most important message anyone has ever proclaimed. Paul Washer strikes all the right notes in this powerful, biblical study." -John MacArthur, pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, and author of The Gospel According to Jesus

 | | | | SPIRITUAL WARFAREA Biblical and Balanced Perspective Brian Borgman and Rob Ventura
Too often, Christians today either sensationalize the subject of spiritual warfare by obsessing over demon possession, exorcisms, binding the devil, and rebuking demons, or they minimize the idea and are unprepared for the real struggle they face against principalities and powers. Pastors Brian Borgman and Rob Ventura provide a balanced approach that exposes the fictions and superstitions surrounding this vital doctrine and at the same time reveal the unseen realities of this struggle. Basing their battle plan on Ephesians 6:10-20, the authors give an overview of the battle, a guide to the armor God gives us, and instruction regarding the vital wartime disciplines of prayer and proclamation of the Word. By learning to think biblically about this subject, Christians are enabled to deflect the blows of their adversary, fight sin, and live God-glorifying lives as followers of Jesus.
"Spiritual Warfare is thoughtful, biblical, theological, accessible, and impactful. The book is exegetical and expository without feeling like a commentary or running homily. In it, authors Borgman and Ventura make much of Christ and what He has done without negating the reality of our adversary and the real danger he presents as well as our call to faith, righteousness, prayer, and perseverance that flows directly from our SaviorÆs finished work. What a timely, refreshing, encouraging, convicting, and empowering book! I canÆt wait to get it in front of our people." - Voddie Baucham Jr., author and pastor of preaching at Grace Family Baptist Church, Spring, Texas
"In his letter to the Ephesians, the apostle Paul describes deliverance from bondage of sin through the work of Christ. He brings that deliverance to bear in our personal experience by the enlivening grace of God. He issues a call for us to walk in this newfound freedom, worthy of our calling in Christ, amid the dangers and challenges of this fallen world. Paul concludes his letter in practical terms for the battle we face as part of the normal course of the Christian life. It is here in Ephesians 6 that Brian Borgman and Rob Ventura meet us to orient us to the strength, weaponry, and strategy by which our Lord equips us for the battle. These pastors provide clear, concise, competent, and compelling counsel in what can be a neglected or abused topic." - Stanley D. Gale, author of Warfare Witness: Contending with Spiritual Opposition in Everyday Evangelism
"Many voices in our day present a version of spiritual warfare in which Satan seems to hold the position of prominence; even preeminence. Christians are left to wonder what magic spell or formulaic expressions can be invoked to see their demons excised. Yet, since Christ has triumphed over all the forces of darkness, His people should grow in hope and faith as they look to Christ. Brian Borgman and Rob Ventura present one of the finest and most biblically responsible and insightful studies of spiritual warfare now available. While they account fully for the reality of SatanÆs deception, cunning, and power, they give greater stress (as they ought!) to the superior and indefatigable victory and sovereign reign of Christ. Christians need the message of this book. Satan, indeed, is a real and present danger, but Christ is our real, risen, and reigning hope! Spiritual Warfare guides readers into a clear and grace-empowered understanding of these truths." - Bruce A. Ware, professor of Christian theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
"Authors Borgman and Ventura aimed for biblical accuracy and balance in addressing spiritual warfare. They hit the bull's-eye! 'How we think about this battle is critical to how we fight it.' Here is a brief treatment that is also clear and accurate: Satan may prowl around as a 'roaring lion' seeking someone to devour, but Christ is the reigning Lion who has already won the battle and sits on the throne!" - Pastor Bruce A. Ray, author of Withhold Not Correction, Celebrating the Sabbath, and Help! My Friend Is Suicidal
"Standing in a long line of Puritan-style reflection on the nature of spiritual warfare, Borgman and Ventura have produced a brief but remarkably rich book which offers very helpful insights on this subject. The thoughtful reader will find here sobering meditations on the power of evil and sin but also be pointed to the great encouragement to be found in the Word of God and supremely in the Lord Jesus Christ. This volume is both a helpful pastoral tool and a fine devotional book." - Carl R. Trueman, Paul Woolley Professor of Church History, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia

 | | | | THE HOLY SPIRIT AND REFORMED SPIRITUALITY A Tribute to the the Life & Ministry of Geoffrey Thomas Edited by Joel R. Beeke and Derek W. Thomas
How does God bring His Word into our lives? The answer is: by the Holy Spirit. By the Spirit the Word was revealed and written. By the Spirit the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. By the Spirit the Word roots itself in the hearts of sinners and produces fruit. Calvin recognized long ago that the Holy Spirit is the bond of union between believers and Christ. Jonathan Edwards said that the Spirit is the sum of all Christ bought for His people with His precious blood. How precious then is the Spirit, and how important to know Him and His ways! In this book, a team of pastor-theologians uncover the rich biblical teachings about the work of the Holy Spirit. How was the Spirit involved in the human life of Jesus Christ? What is a spiritual person? How does the Spirit open the mind of sinners to trust in Christ? What does it mean to serve God in the power of the Spirit? How does the SpiritÆs sovereign work relate to our responsibility in evangelism? These questions and more are addressed in this book.

 | | | | JOHN KNOX: Christian Biographies for Young Readers Siomonetta Carr
From armed bodyguard to galley slave, from loving husband and father to fiery preacher, John Knox was moved by a relentless passion for the honor of God and the purity of His truth and worship. Yet when he was a schoolboy growing up in the small Scottish town of Haddington, he could never have imagined that he would become a major leader of the powerful movement that transformed Scotland into one of the most committed Protestant countries in the world. Simonetta Carr tells the story of how this great Reformer, whose life began humbly, in a faraway, mysterious part of the world, influenced the church and its beliefs far beyond the borders of Scotland, shaping our thinking still today.
Illustrator- Matt Abraxas has traveled from California to France, studying diff erent approaches to art. He enjoys creating and teaching art and currently exhibits his work at the SmithKlein Gallery in Boulder, Colorado. Matt lives with his wife, Rebecca, and two sons, Zorba and Rainer, in Lafayette, Colorado.
Endorsements: "In this clear, concise, and readable short biography, Simonetta Carr tells the dramatic story of John Knox. Setting him in the context of his troubled times, she vividly explains how he became a Protestant, a galley slave, a friend of John Calvin, an English pastor, and, finally, the leading preacher of the Scottish Reformation. This is an excellent introduction for children to the religious ideas that transformed the churches of sixteenth-century Western Europe." - Rosalind K. Marshall, fellow of the Royal Society of Literatureand author of John Knox
"This story is about my homeland and one of my fellow countrymen. Simonetta Carr's description of John Knox doesn't focus so much on the stereotype of a fiery Scot, but brings out more of the gentle, loving, gospel side of this strong Reformer. It was with thankfulness to God that I read about what I owe to His work through John Knox, and it is with appreciation to Simonetta, her historical accuracy, and love of the gospel that I recommend this book to families, Christians, and fellow Scots." - Catherine Mackenzie, author of children's and teens' books, including John Knox: The Sharpened Sword
Author - Simonetta Carr was born in Italy and has lived and worked in different cultures. A former elementary school teacher, she has home-schooled her eight children for many years. She has written for newspapers and magazines around the world and has translated the works of several Christian authors into Italian. Presently, she lives in San Diego with her husband, Thomas, and family. She is a member and Sunday school teacher at Christ united Reformed Church.

 | | | | AN ABLE AND FAITHFUL MINISTRY: Samuel Miller and the Pastoral Office James Garretson
 Publisher's Description:
Samuel Miller (1769-1850) played an integral part in founding Princeton Theological Seminary, which became one of the most influential training grounds for Presbyterian ministers in the nineteenth century. While Miller is most commonly remembered for his writings on church office, he also played a significant role instructing students and shaping their theology of preaching and pastoral ministry. In the present volume, Jim Garretson highlights the narrative of Miller's life and the major ministerial emphases found in his published writings, sermons, and unpublished lecture notes. As a result, readers will come to know the spiritual convictions of Miller's heart and understand the theology of ministry he imparted over the course of his lifetime.
 Endorsements:
"James Garretson has already provided erudite and welcome additions to the history of American pastoral theology with his work on Archibald Alexander. Now he has moved on to look at the life and teaching of another Old Princeton giant, Samuel Miller. Once again, his contribution to antebellum American religious history is remarkable. By contextualizing Miller's pastoral teaching within his larger life and historical setting, Garretson reveals much to us about why Miller was so hugely influential among Presbyterians (and others) during his lifetime. Miller himself would appreciate Garretson's emphasis on the practical uses of religious biography and history for contemporary readers. It is a profoundly welcome work on an Old Princeton figure who has received far less attention today than he deserves." -Paul Gutjahr, professor and chair, Department of English, Indiana University
"There is much debate today about exactly what the pastoral ministry should look like, what its priorities should be, what the tools of its trade are, and what kind of man should hold it. Once again, Jim Garretson has enriched the literature on this topic by opening up the world of the Old Princetonians for us. This book is not only a moving portrait of one of the great nineteenth-century Presbyterian pastors and thinkers but also a stimulus to practical reflection on how the traditional ordinary-means-of-grace model of church and pastor can be applied today. A wonderful volume." - Carl Trueman, Paul Woolley Professor of Church History, Westminster Theological Seminary
"James M. Garretson's book on Samuel Miller and his teaching on the pastoral office brings one of the founding fathers of American Presbyterianism back to life. Herein, Miller enriches us with his piety, guides us with his wisdom, and equips us to be more able and faithful preachers of God's Holy Word. This study will clarify your call to gospel service or serve as a refresher course on the godly practice of Reformed ministry." - Peter A. Lillback, president, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia
"For those of us like myself who knew Samuel Miller primarily as a historical author, this book is worth its weight in gold. As James Garretson demonstrates through careful research and pellucid prose, Miller has much to teach moderns when it comes to biblical theology, sermon preparation and delivery, and ministerial character and deportment. All in all, a highly extremely helpful work for anyone concerned about pastoral ministry or seriously considering such a calling." - Michael A. G. Haykin, professor of church history and biblical spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
"Samuel Miller, Old School Presbyterian minister and Princeton Seminary's unsung hero, was both an intellectual and experiential Christian, and a servant of Christ armed with both truth and power. James Garretson's fitting combination of biography and wise counsel allows Professor Miller to mentor us still today in a host of ways. This fascinating volume is a tour de force for practical theology; I devoured every word. Every pastor, elder, seminary professor, and seminary student should read this book, and return to it again and again for direction and encouragement." - Joel R. Beeke, president, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

Endorsements: "Few things are more important than the question of the assurance of our salvation. The dangers of false assurance are obvious, and Scripture warns us that the number of falsely assured in churches is legion. The tragedy of the 'unnecessarily troubled' is that they never gain the footing that produces the fruit of the Spirit and compels great acts of obedience. Just as I would want my children to know for certain they are mine, God wants His children to know that they are His. Washer has provided a great and thorough resource for those wanting to plumb the depths of the question 'Am I really saved?' and to teach it to others. This book is loaded with scriptural analysis and pastoral advice. It is a necessary book for the library of anyone entrusted with the care of souls." -J. D. Grear, PhD, author of Stop Asking Jesus into Your Heart: How to Know for Sure You Are Saved and Gospel: Recovering the Power that Made Christianity Revolutionary
"Paul Washer has given us a tremendously helpful tool to seek solid assurance that we are saved from sin by God's grace. The Word of God is like a mirror for self-examination. The Epistle of First John particularly helps us examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith. Washer applies 1 John in a masterful way to this question, explaining a dozen marks of saving grace in the soul. At the same time, this book does not encourage us to rest on our past experiences but to press forward in spiritual growth in dependence upon the Spirit of Christ. Here is sweet help for God's children struggling to enjoy assurance of their Father's forgiveness and acceptance. And here is a sober warning to the self-deceived. May God use this book for His glory to the comfort of His people and the conversion of lost sinners." - Joel R. Beeke, president, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

 | | | | JONATHAN EDWARDS Christian Biographies for Young Readers Simonetta Carr
Jonathan Edwards lived at a time when many people were seriously questioning long-accepted ideas about the world, life, and God, and his answers to these questions have left a mark on the way we think today. While he is often remembered as the preacher of a scary sermon about a spider dangling over a fire, he remains significant as one of the greatest thinkers America has produced. Simonetta Carr traces the events of EdwardsÆs life from a young student interested in science to husband and father, pastor, leader of the Great Awakening, missionary, writer, and college president. Colorful illustrations, interesting facts, and a compelling story combine to introduce young readers to this important theologian and life in colonial America.
"Jonathan Edwards is one of the most important post-Reformation Protestant thinkers and writers; at once an intellectual of the highest caliber, a pastor and spiritual theologian, one of the leaders of the evangelical Great Awakening of the eighteenth century, and a devoted family man. The genius of Simonetta CarrÆs book is that she manages to capture all these facets of Edwards and compresses them into the scope of a simple, accessible introduction. Young and old readers alike will learn much from her work. It is a delight to read!" - Oliver Crisp, professor of systematic theology, Fuller Theological Seminary
"Jonathan Edwards had an all-encompassing vision of God and His work in this world. It is the kind of vision we all need today. This book brings Jonathan Edwards and his vision to life for a whole new generation. I wish I had this book when I was a young reader." - Stephen J. Nichols, president of Reformation Bible College and C.A.O. of Ligonier Ministries

 | | | | WHY CHRIST CAME 31 Meditations on the Incarnation Joel R. Beeke & William Boekestein
When thinking about Christ's birth, we often focus our attention on Luke's detailed gospel account. But to appreciate the main point of the story - that the eternal Son of God assumed our flesh-and-blood human nature - we need to learn from the rest of the Bible why Christ came to earth. Why did Christ come? In this book, thirty-one thoughtful meditations answer this vital question, and the answers encourage us to celebrate Christ's birth more deeply, see more clearly how it is connected with the rest of His ministry, and recognize its importance for our lives.

click for details | | THE COMPLETE EXEGETICAL & DOCTRINAL WORKS OF WILLIAM PERKINS William Perkins

***VOLUME FIVE: Perkins' BODY OF DIVINITY (CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT)

The Works of William Perkins fills a major gap in Reformed and Puritan theology. Though Perkins is best known today for his writings on predestination, he also wrote prolifically on many subjects. His works filled over two thousand large pages of small print in three folio volumes and were reprinted several times in the decades after his death. However, his complete works have not been in print since the mid-seventeenth century. This modern typeset edition of the Works includes four volumes of Perkins's expositions of Scripture, three volumes of his doctrinal and polemical treatises, and three volumes of his practical writings.
THE EXEGETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM PERKINS (in Four Volumes)
VOLUME ONE: contains three of Perkins's treatises.
The First is 'A Digest or Harmony of the Books of the Old and New Testament', which offers a synopsis of the Bible that relates sacred history to the chronology of the world. Dating God's creation of the universe in 3967 BC, Perkins develops his overview of redemptive history that culminates in the final judgment.
The Second treatise is 'The Combat between Christ and the Devil Displayed.' Expounding Matthew 4:1-11, Perkins shows how Christ's temptation in the wilderness (1) set Jesus up to serve as the second Adam, overcoming Satan's temptation in a way the first Adam did not; (2) reveals how the devil assaults the church so that we might be better prepared to resist his temptations; and (3) equipped Christ to be a sympathetic high priest to those who are tempted.
The Third and most significant treatise is 'A Godly and Learned Exposition upon Christ's Sermon in the Mount'. "Hereof I have chosen to entreat," says Perkins, "because it is a most divine and learned sermon, and may not unfitly be called the 'Key to the whole Bible'; for here Christ opens the sum of the Old and New Testaments." The fact that Perkins saw the Sermon on the Mount as unlocking the meaning of Scripture in its entirety suggests that his understanding of what Christ declares in Matthew 5-7 was pivotal to the development of his theology and piety.
VOLUME TWO: Expositional Commentary on Galatians
This second volume contains Perkins's Commentary on Galatians. Perkins preached on Galatians each Lord's Day for over three years. Ralph Cudworth obtained Perkins's handwritten notes and edited them for publication. Because Perkins did not complete the commentary, Cudworth supplemented the manuscript with his own comments on chapter 6.
This commentary of Perkins and Cudworth on Galatians first appeared in print in 1604, two years after Perkins's death. Perkins's other writings had already begun to be gathered and published. When the three-volume edition of his collected works first appeared, Galatians occupied over 320 large folio pages in the second volume (1609). It continued to appear as a part of several editions of the Works through their final 1635 reprint. Evidently, interest in the commentary warranted its publication again as a separate volume in 1617.
Following the model taught in his treatise The Art of Prophesying, Perkins's pattern in commenting on Galatians is to explain the text, deduce a few points of doctrine from it, answer objections raised against the doctrine, and then give practical uses of what the passage teaches.

THE PRACTICAL WORKS (in 3 volumes)
VOLUME SEVEN: This seventh volume includes three treatises that strike a helpful balance of emphases on theology, history, and practice.
A Reformed Catholic exists as a systematic, theological presentation of Perkins’s Reformed soteriology in contrast with the Church of Rome.
Perkins’s Problem of the Forged Catholicism is an exercise in historical theology, proving from the primary source documents of church history that the Roman Catholicism articulated at Trent is not supported by the first twelve hundred years of the church’s witness.
A Warning Against Idolatry handles worship practices—including liturgies, ceremonies, customs, and rites—concluding that all the externals of worship must be regulated by Scripture in the strictest sense.
Taken as a whole, Perkins’s polemical work against the Church of Rome draws a clear dividing line between Roman Catholicism and the Reformed tradition.
VOLUME EIGHT: This eighth volume includes five treatises meant to promote a good conscience before God.
A Discourse of Conscience establishes a framework for understanding the importance of conscience and how it functions.
The Whole Treatise of the Cases of Conscience is an extensive treatment of casuistry that treats man in his three principle conditions (by himself, in relation to God, and in relation to others).
A Treatise Tending unto a Declaration whether a Man Is in the Estate of Damnation or in the Estate of Grace distinguishes between true and false professors, demonstrates how Roman Catholicism falls short of assurance, and highlights the devil’s attempts to sully the consciences of God’s people.
A Case of Conscience gives full attention to the importance of personal assurance of salvation.
A Grain of Mustard Seed provides consolation to weak Christians by encouraging them to recognize and grow in gratitude for the grace they have.
There is much in the present volume to commend to the reader, but what clearly stands out is Perkins’s skill as a spiritual adviser.
VOLUME NINE: This ninth volume brings together nine of Perkins’s lesser known practical treatises and, by so doing, introduces the reader to important facets of his religion of the heart.
It opens with two works on what it means to look to Christ: A Declaration of the True Manner of Knowing Christ Crucified and The True Gain.
This is followed by A Faithful and Plain Exposition upon Zephaniah 2:1–2, which gives an earnest call to repentance, and The Nature and Practice of Repentance as well as The Combat of the Flesh and Spirit, which give systematic explanations of the doctrine of repentance.
A Treatise of Man’s Imaginations discusses man’s desperate need for renewal of mind.
A Direction for the Government of the Tongue According to God’s Word argues that one’s speech is the most significant change related to a renewed heart.
The volume finishes with A Discourse of the Damned Art of Witchcraft and A Resolution to the Country Man on Prognostication, which rebuke those who dally with occult practices.
Each treatise in this volume occupies an important place in Perkins’s experiential piety—what he himself described as “the more sincere profession of religion.”
VOLUME TEN: This tenth volume brings together seven treatises that demonstrate Perkins’s core conviction that the gospel touches all of life by bringing it under the rule of Scripture. Treatise on How to Live Well in All Estates opens the volume with a description of the reign of faith in Christians’ hearts so that they avoid sin and pursue the will of God in all they do. Treatise on Vocations explains how God calls Christians to live out their faith in whatever responsibilities they hold within society. Right Manner of Erecting and Ordering a Family applies the concept of vocation to life in the home. Calling of the Ministry applies vocation to the church, describing the duties and dignities of the ministers of Christ. Art of Prophesying equips those called to the ministry with the proper manner and method of preaching God’s Word. Christian Equity exhorts Christians to maintain justice and preserve peace, whether in families, church, or the greater commonwealth. Having finished with principles of living by faith, the volume ends with Treatise on Dying Well, which discusses the importance of faith at the end of life.

 ENDORSEMENTS FROM MODERN MEN
"On the broad shoulders of William Perkins, epoch-making pioneer, stood the entire school of seventeenth-century Puritan pastors and divines, yet the Puritan reprint industry has steadily bypassed him. Now, however, he begins to reappear, admirably edited, and at last this yawning gap is being filled. Profound thanks to the publisher and heartfelt praise to God have become due." - J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia
"William Perkins was a most remarkable Christian. In his relatively short life he was a great preacher, pastor, and theologian. His prolific writings were foundational to the whole English Puritan enterprise and a profound influence beyond his own time and borders. His works have become rare, and their republication must be a source of real joy and blessing to all serious Christians. Perkins is the first Puritan we should read." - W. Robert Godfrey, president, Westminster Seminary California
"The list of those influenced by the ministry of William Perkins reads like a veritable Who's Who of the Puritan Brotherhood and far beyond. This reprinting of his works, so long unobtainable except by a few, is therefore a publishing event of the first magnitude." - Sinclair B. Ferguson, professor of systematic theology, Redeemer Theological Seminary, Dallas
 CONTEMPORARY DESCRIPTIONS OF PERKINS
"Perkins was justly esteemed by his contemporaries as a master in theology." - Charles H. Spurgeon
"In orderliness of method and vivid description, William Perkins takes the crown." - Gisbertus Voetius
"I gladly call to mind the time, when being young, I heard, worthy Master Perkins, so preach in a great assembly of students, that he instructed them soundly in the truth, stirred them up effectually to seek after godliness, made them fit for the kingdom of God; and by his own example shewing them, what things they should chiefly intend, that they might promote true religion, in the power of it, unto God's glory, and others' salvation." - William Ames
"Mr. Perkins's sermons were all law and all gospel. He was a rare instance of those opposite gifts meeting in so eminent a degree in the same preacher, even the vehemence and thunder of Boanerges, to awaken sinners to a sense of their sin and danger, and to drive them from destruction; and the persuasion and comfort of Barnabas, to pour the wine and oil of gospel consolation into their wounded spirits." - Benjamin Brook

 | | | | THE FADING OF THE FLESH AND THE FLOURISHING OF FAITH George Swinnock, edited by J. Stephen Yuille
What will satisfy you when your flesh and heart fail?
The Puritans frequently talked about dying well. That is something we do not discuss much these days, though we should. In this book, George Swinnock presents modern readers with valuable food for thought as he expounds Psalm 73:26, "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever." Swinnock combines careful explanation with vivid illustration to reveal the futility of earthly comforts and highlight the inestimable comfort, satisfaction, and joy afforded us in Christ. Displaying the relevance of the Puritans for today, you will find this sorely neglected and sobering topic an easy, thought-provoking, and compelling read.
 Endorsements:
"This wonderful little book, written with charm, simplicity, and clarity by George Swinnock is bound to prove both a delight and a challenge to any Christian who values the riches of the gospel. It is a spiritual gem that deserves to be read and re-read. In addition, its charm, simplicity, and clarity make it a perfect entry point to the writings of the pastoral Puritans. Beautifully edited for the modern reader by Dr. Stephen Yuille, 'The Fading of the Flesh' is a rare spiritual treat." - Sinclair B. Ferguson
"George Swinnock had the gift of illustration largely developed, as his works prove." - C. H. Spurgeon

 | | | | STOP LOVING THE WORLD Puritan Treasures for Today by William Greenhill
The Puritans were greatly concerned with suppressing worldliness in the church. Today, worldliness is an even greater problem, exacerbated by the fact that so few dare to speak out against it. In this book, William Greenhill provides modern readers with a healthy antidote to our love a air with the world. He explains what it means to love the world, exposes the dangers of cherishing it, shares how we ought to relate to it, and gives encouraging directions for removing our hearts from it. This is a book with a timeless message, demonstrating the relevance of the Puritans for today. By GodÆs grace, it will help persuade you that the world and all its charms are not what you should live for.
"'Don't let the world squeeze you into its mold' is a modern paraphrase of Paul's warning in Romans 12:2 regarding conformity to this world. William Greenhill's sermon, carefully edited in this volume and made more digestible by introducing separate chapters to the Puritan's lengthy discourse, is as timely as it is necessary. Truth is, we are all too much in love with this world and too little in love with the world to come. Worldliness pervades our churches as much as our individual lives and we need to do something about it - quickly. 'Stop Loving the World' is not pleasant reading - for it calls attention to a sin that we would sooner tolerate than mortify; but, if we are serious about godliness, mortify it we must. A book to read slowly, carefully, and prayerfully." - Derek W. H. Thomas, John E. Richards Professor of Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, and Minister of Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS

 | | | | NIGHT OF WEEPING and MORNING OF JOY Horatius Bonar
Horatius Bonar, a well-known nineteenth-century minister called 'the prince of Scottish hymn-writers,' was also a prolific writer of scriptural, practical, and experiential Christian literature. Two of his books that bore considerable fruit and have often been reprinted were 'The Night of Weeping and The Morning of Joy', here reprinted under one cover. The Night of Weeping expounds compassionately and beautifully a biblical view of suffering, showing how it is an integral part of belonging to GodÆs family, how to cope with it, and how it benefits the believer. The chapters on the purifying and solemnizing fruits of suffering are themselves worth the price of the book. The Morning of Joy shows how God leads believers to rejoice in the present and future joys of the living church, particularly through fellowshipping with the resurrected Christ. The chapters on the majestic kingdom of Christ and the superlative joys of glory are most uplifting. By the SpiritÆs grace, both books can be life-changing; they present us with a clear, powerful, profound, and balanced view of the Christian life and of GodÆs dealings with His people.
