BE STILL MY SOUL: Embracing God's Purpose & Provision in Suffering
Edited by Nancy Guthrie w/ Contributions by Ferguson, Packer, Sproul, Newton etc.

A POWERFUL RESOURCE TO MINISTER TO THOSE IN THE MIDST OF SUFFERING.

Since the beginning of humanity, the question of suffering-why it happens and how God works in it-has existed. What are you doing, God? Why is this happening? Where are you? These questions fill our thoughts when we experience deep pain and tragedy. Having lost two young children who suffered from a rare and incurable disease, editor Nancy Guthrie has put together this helpful collection of short readings exploring the question of suffering.

This anthology includes essays from both classic and contemporary theologians, Bible teachers, and missionaries such as John Calvin, Charles Spurgeon, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, John Piper, Corrie ten Boom, Joni Eareckson Tada, and Helen Roseveare. Each entry expounds on a Bible verse, leading readers to see and be comforted by God's perspective, purpose, and provision in suffering.

"A MOUNTAIN OF SOUND THEOLOGY." - C.H. Spurgeon on The Works of Manton

"The renowned Thomas Manton (1620-1677), whose writings have long been prized by thousands, was known first and foremost as a great preacher. In a day when good preaching is sorely lacking, we need the reprint of his Complete Works, in which twenty of his twenty-two volumes are sermons. These sermons are the legacy of a powerful preacher devoted to the systematic teaching and application of God's Word. Whether he is expounding the Lord's Prayer, Psalm 119, Isaiah 53, James, or Jude, Manton presents us with the best that English Puritans had to offer in careful, solid, warmhearted exposition of the Scriptures." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, author of MEET THE PURITANS

"The publication of a complete and uniform edition of Manton's works is a great boon to the readers of English theology. Many of his best writings have been hitherto inaccessible to all who have not long purses and large libraries. The few who know him would gladly testify, I am sure, that Thomas Manton was one of the best authors of his day, and that his works richly deserve reprinting." -J.C. Ryle, from his Introduction called An Estimate of Manton (Found in Volume 2)

SOME MANTON QUOTES TO WHET YOUR APPETITE -

"One way to get comfort is to plead the promise of God in prayer, show Him His handwriting; God is tender of His Word."

"When we make self the end of prayer, it is not worship but self-seeking."

"Excess in meat and drink clouds the mind, chokes good affections, and provokes lust. Many a man digs his own grave with his teeth."

"If you yield to Satan in the least, he will carry you further and further, till he has left you under a stupefied or terrified conscience: stupefied, till thou hast lost all thy tenderness. A stone at the top of a hill, when it begins to roll down, ceases not till it comes to the bottom. Thou thinkest it is but yielding a little, and so by degrees are carried on, till thou hast sinned away all thy profession, and all principles of conscience, by the secret witchery of his temptations."

"What is the reason there is so much preaching and so little practice? For want of meditation. Constant thoughts are operative, and musing makes the fire burn. Green wood is not kindled by a flash or spark, but by constant blowing."

"First we practice sin, then defend it, then boast of it."

"Divisions in the church always breed atheism in the world."

"Men in general do not live as if they looked to die; and therefore do not die as if they looked to live."

"The more affected we are with our misery, the fitter for Christ's mercy."

"We know God but as men born blind know the fire: they know that there is such a thing as fire, for they feel it warm them, but what it is they know not. So, that there is a God we know, but what He is we know little, and indeed we can never search Him out to perfection; a finite creature can never fully comprehend that which is infinite."

"If a man would lead a happy life, let him but seek a sure object for his trust, and he shall be safe: "He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord." He hath laid up his confidence in God, therefore his heart is kept in an equal poise."

"We know God but as men born blind know the fire: they know that there is such a thing as fire, for they feel it warm them, but what it is they know not. So, that there is a God we know, but what He is we know little, and indeed we can never search Him out to perfection; a finite creature can never fully comprehend that which is infinite."

"The end of study is information, and the end of meditation is practice, or a work upon the affections. Study is like a winter sun that shines, but warms not: but meditation is like a blowing upon the fire, where we do not mind the blaze, but the heat. The end of study is to hoard up truth; but of meditation to lay it forth in conference or holy conversation."

"Faith is the fountain of prayer, and prayer should be nothing else but faith exercised."

“You would think it strange of two people who conversed every day for forty or fifty years, but all this while did not know one another; yet this is the case between us and our souls; we live a long time in this world but are strangers to ourselves.”

"Works before conversion cannot engage God, and works after conversion can not satisfy God - all the endeavor and labor of the creature will never procure it."

AN EXPOSITION UPON THE EPISTLE OF JUDE
William Jenkyn

Spurgeon said of this classic Puritan commentary: "A TREASURE-HOUSE OF GOOD THINGS."

Thomas Manton first gave up the idea of printing his work on Jude when he read this masterpiece by William Jenkyn, but later changed his mind when urged by friends. Yet he tell us, "I consulted with my reverend brother's book, and when I found at any point at large discussed by him, I either omitted it or mentioned it very briefly; so that his labours will be necessary to supply the weakness of mine."

Cyril Barber said, "William Jenkyn was a diligent student of the Word, an able expositor, and known throughout England for his piety. We welcome the republication of this outstanding commentary. It is a tribute to the foresight of the publishers that they are making it available to a new generation of Bible students and teachers."

Joel Beeke has added, "Jenkyn's Exposition of the Epistle of Jude remains unsurpassed today. It powerfully exhibits Jenkyn's piety and learning."

Malcolm Watts said, "The Exposition upon Jude by Jenkyn is beyond praise. In my opinion it ranks as one of the best in the old Nichols series."

Rev. James Sherman, editor of the 1863 edition, wrote the following: "The following Exposition is the most considerable of Jenkyn's works, and exhibits his piety, diligence and learning. It was delivered at Christ Church, Newgate Street, in the ordinary course of his ministry, and met with great acceptance; two editions having been published during the life of the author, both of which have been carefully collated for the present publication. The editor believes that, from the great pains taken to render the work perfect, few errors have escaped detection. He now commits it to the favor of God, who, judging from the testimonies received from many ministers, has crowned the Exposition previously published with a large share of his blessing."

GRACE: The Truth, Growth and Different Degrees
Christopher Love edited by Don Kistler

“Christopher Love was a brilliant young Welsh preacher and rising star in the world of Puritan ministry,” wrote the late J.I. Packer. Love was highly regarded by his peers. He was a staunch Presbyterian and a Covenanter. The American preacher, Jonathan Edwards, read Love and had his books in his personal library.

Thomas Manton, a fellow Presbyterian and Love’s good friend, preached at Love’s funeral to a huge audience. Love’s wife wrote 140 pages of memoirs about her husband. “His family looked upon him as a Moses for meekness and a Job for patience,” she wrote. “He lived too much in heaven to live long out of heaven.”

Here are Love’s 15 sermons on grace, taken from 1 Kings 14:13: “Because in him there is found some good thing toward the Lord God of Israel.” The Puritans saw a God who looked for “some good thing” in His people. The “hall of fame” in Hebrews 11 is full of people who, for all we know, only did one good thing, and yet they are held up as models of faith. That indeed is grace, and that indeed is amazing!

Christopher Love is one of my favorite Puritans. And this book on “Grace” is, in my opinion, one of the 3 best books I’ve ever published in over 30 years of reprinting the Puritans. If there’s a single theme to this book it is this: Christ is a better Savior than I am a sinner. —Dr. Don Kistler, Editor

VOICES FROM THE PAST: Puritan Daily Devotional Readings (Two Volume Set of Readings)
Compiled by Richard Rushing

VOLUME ONE: 428 Page Beautiful Hardcover with Dust Jacket

TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING! This work has long been anticipated. Glean from the wisdom and spiritual depth of the Puritans during 2010 through these 365 daily readings.

Over the past fifty years there has been a great resurgence of interest in the writings of the Puritans. The reading of their works has brought great benefit to the people of God in many lands. Christians from many different backgrounds and cultures owe a great debt of gratitude to those faithful pastors and preachers who continue to speak through their writings even though they have long since entered into their heavenly reward. The Puritans really knew how to teach and apply God's Word in the Spirit's power!

Richard Rushing has compiled this book of daily devotional readings from his favourite Puritan authors because of the great help he has gained from their Works. 'How thrilling it has been for me to read the Puritans on the glory and attributes of God, divine providence, fellowship with God, holiness of life and the mortification of indwelling sin, heavenly mindedness, prayer, evangelistic zeal, and trust in the Lord during times of affliction. At every turn these truths are eloquently taught, faithfully applied, and kindly offered as the subject of sweet spiritual meditation.'

This book is sent forth with the prayer that it will open a door to the vast stores of treasure to be found in the writings of the Puritans and that it will stimulate further exploration of this rich spiritual inheritance.

Richard Rushing has compiled a further 365 daily devotional readings to take you through the year with the Puritans. Building on Voices from the Past (volume 1), Voices From the Past 2 is an additional treasury of wisdom from such authors as Stephen Charnock, Thomas Manton, David Clarkson, Thomas Brooks, John Bunyan, and Jonathan Edwards, and others.

The editor has painstakingly selected these readings from their sources, some of which are still widely available in print, others of which are more scarce. Readers will find these choice extracts to be excellent ‘thoughts for the day’, and will frequently find themselves wanting to explore more of the writings of these authors of the past.

FAREWELL SERMONS: Addresses from Some of the Most Eminent Nonconformist Ministers of the Great Ejection of 1662
Richard Baxter, Thomas Manton, Thomas Watson, Thomas Brooks, Joseph Caryl, William Jenkyn, William Bates and Eleven More

GREAT NEWS!

SOLID GROUND Has Published a New Edition of "FAREWELL SERMONS: Addresses from Some of the Most Eminent Nonconformist Ministers of the Great Ejection of 1662

The following paragraphs from Original Preface will explain the power in this volume: "Most of the sermons contained in this collection were delivered on the twenty-fourth of August, in the year 1662. On that day the act requiring a perfect conformity to the book of Common Prayer, and to the rites and ceremonies of the church took place: the effect of which enactment was the silencing of nearly two thousand five hundred ministers, the death of three thousand nonconformists, and the ruin of sixty thousand families. Such was the result of the restoration of Charles the Second of infamous memory.

To ascertain the spirit which actuated the ejected ministers, it is sufficient to refer to the following selection of their farewell sermons, which were delivered at the very moment they were agonizing under the fangs of persecution, but which discover nothing but a combination of christian graces. Bishop Burnet admits that 'many of them were distinguished by their abilities and their zeal '; and the celebrated Locke has remarked, 'Bartholomew-day was fatal to our church and religion, by throwing out a very great number of worthy, learned, pious and orthodox divines.'"

C.H. Spurgeon said, "Those great preachers whose names we remember, were men who counted nothing their own: they were driven out from their benefices, because they could not conform to the Established Church, and they gave up all they had willingly to the Lord. They were hunted from place to place, they wandered here and there to preach the gospel to a few. Those were foul times; but they promised they would walk the road fair or foul, and they did walk it knee-deep in mud; and they would have walked it if it had been kinee-deep in blood too. But now we are all little men, there is scarce a man alive now upon this earth."

John Bunyan, who spent 12 years in Bedford jail for his Nonconformity, said, "I fought till my sword did cleave to my right hand; and then they were joined together, as if a sword grew out of my arm; and when the blood ran through my fingers, then I fought with most courage."

Iain Murray wrote, "John Stoughton has described the Sunday upon which most of the Farewell Sermons were preached: 'No Sunday in England ever resembled exactly that which fell on the 17th of August, 1662, one week before the feast of St Bartholomew. There have been "mourning, lamentation, and woe," in particular parish churches when death, persecution, or some other cause has broken pastoral ties, and severed from loving congregations their spiritual guides; but for many hundreds of ministers on the same day to be uttering farewells is an unparalleled circumstance. In after years, Puritan fathers and mothers related to their children the story of assembled crowds, of aisles, standing-places and stairs, filled to suffocation, of people clinging to open windows like swarms of bees, of overflowing throngs in churchyards and streets, of deep silence or stifled sobs, as the flock gazed on the shepherd - "sorrowing most of all that they should see his face no more." ' It is well for us to bear such a background in mind as we read the following pages. The atmosphere of that day was electric and charged with emotion; the popular discontent was great and strong guards stood ready in London, but these sermons seem far removed from all that. There is a calmness, and unction and a lack of invective. Great though their sorrow was for their flocks and for their nation, they had a message to preach which was more than equal to the strain of the crisis. An eternal God, an Ever-Living Saviour and a glorious hope of heaven, carried them through this heaviest trial."

Don Kistler, founder of Northampton Press, said the following about this volume: "This is a precious volume, because it is the last sermon many of these Puritan pastors preached to their congregations before they were forced out of their pulpits. Yet you will not find any bitterness or acrimony in their sermons. Instead, they do what they had done every other Lord's Day: They preached the glories of Christ.

First published in 2 volumes in the 1600's, then retypeset in 1816 in a single volume, and then published again in 1992, this wonderful collection of Puritan sermons is now available once again. Who knows when it might be available after this edition is gone? Do not miss this opportunity to have this marvelous work. You will be the richer for it. Also, this will likely be your only chance to read sermons by some of the lesser-known, but not lesser-important men represented here, such as Lazarus Seaman, Thomas Lye, George Evanke, and Thomas Jacomb. Solid Ground is to be commended for choosing to reprint this work. Now commend them yourself by purchasing it!"

Ray Rhodes, founder of Nourished in the Word Ministries just added: "If writing makes a man more precise in his communication then writing under persecution further clarifies the message. Some of history's richest sermons have been preached and books written when the author was under either the threat or the actual fires of suffering. The authors of these "Farewell Sermons" are some of the brightest lights in all of Puritan history. Each word, sentence, and paragraph hits the target. Words cannot be wasted when life hangs in the balance. Do you want your character strengthend and your faith deepened? Read these sermons that have been washed by the tears of those who were persecuted for righteousness sake."

Robert Paul Martin, author of 'A Guide to the Puritans' wrote - "Simply one of the finest volumes ever published. The farewell sermons of great Puritan preachers. What more could we ask?"

CONTENTS OF THIS INCREDIBLE VOLUME

1- Edmund Calamy - Sermon from 2nd Samuel 24:14 "Let us Fall into the Hand of the Lord"

2- Thomas Manton - Sermon from Hebrews 12:1 - "The people of God that have such a multitude of examples of holy men and women set before them, should prepare themselves to run the spiritual race with more patience and cheerfulness."

3- Joseph Caryl - Sermon from Revelation 3:4 - "In which encouragement I told you we might consider two things, or take it into two parts. First, " That they should walk with Christ." Secondly, " They should walk in white."

4- Thomas Case - Sermon on Revelation 2:5 - "CHRIST here prescribes precious physic for the healing of this languishing church of Ephesus; it is compounded of a threefold ingredient: 1. Self-reflection, " Remember from," &c. 2. Holy contrition and humiliation before the Lord, " Repent." 3. Thorough reformation, " Do thy first works."

5- William Jenkyn - Morning Sermon on Hebrews 11:38 - "The apostle in this excellent chapter, (that by some is deservedly called a little book of martyrs) discovers the triumph of faith, or victory against all difficulty we meet with."

6- William Jenkyn - Afternoon Sermon on Exodus 3:2-5 - "First then, for explanation, I shall here endeavour to open these two things to you: first, what it is for a place to be holy, or wherein the nature of the holiness of the places consists ; secondly, what that is, that is the foundation or cause of the holiness of places; and both these must in our discourse, and likewise apprehension, be accurately distinguished."

7- Richard Baxter - Sermon on Colossians 2:6,7 - "Omitting the division, and in part the opening of the words, the observation is ; - " That those that have received Christ Jesus the Lord, must accordingly be rooted, built Up in him, and established in the faith; and walk in him as they have been taught, and abound therein with thanksgiving."

8- Thomas Jacombe - Morning Sermon on John 8:29 - The observation I intend to speak to, shall be this: They that please God, and endeavour always to do the things that please God, such God will be with; such the Father will not leave alone; especially in times of suffering and trouble, for I will bring it to that case.

9- Thomas Jacombe - Afternoon Sermon on John 8:29 - Let me endeavour to prevail with every one of you, so to carry yourselves in your several places and capacities, that whatever you do, you may please God.

10- William Bates - Morning Sermon on Hebrews 12:20,21 - Now in these two verses he sums up, by way of recapitulation, all that which he had discoursed of at large, and in them you may observe these two things. 1. A description of God, to whom he addresses this prayer: The God of Peace. 2. The substance of the prayer itself.

11- William Bates - Afternoon Sermon on Hebrews 12:20,21 - It follows " that great Shepherd of the sheep." For the opening of this, 1. We will consider the title of Christ. 2. The person for whom this title relates.

12- Thomas Watson - Morning Sermon on John 13:34 - Doctrine. Christians ought to make conscience of this duty of loving one another. Confident I am, we shall never see religion thrive in the world, until we see this grace of love flourish in the heart of christians.

13- Thomas Watson - Afternoon Sermon on 2 Corinthians 7:1 - It is the title that I intend now, by the help of God, to insist upon, that sweet parenthesis in the text, "dearly beloved," wherein you have the apostle breathing forth his affections unto this people. He speaks now as a pastor, and he speaks to them as his spiritual children.

14- Thomas Watson - Farewell Sermon on Isaiah 3:10,11 - This text is like Israel's pillar or cloud; it hath a light side, and a dark side: it hath a light side unto the godly, "Say unto the righteous, it shall be well with him;" and it hath a dark side unto the wicked, "Woe unto the wicked, it shall be ill with him." Both you see are rewarded, righteous and wicked; but here is a vast difference, the one hath a reward of mercy, the other a reward of j ustice.

15- Thomas Lye - First Sermon on Philippians 4:1 - I shall without any more ado enter upon the text; in which you have two things considerable. A most melting compellation, and a most serious exhortation. 1. A melting compellation, "my brethren, dearly beloved," &c. 2. A serious exhortation; and in it first, the matter of the duty, stand, and stand it out, and stand fast. Secondly, the manner. First, so stand, so as you have stood, stand fast. Second, in the Lord; stand so, and stand in the Lord, in the Lord's strength, and in the Lord's cause.

16- Thomas Lye - Second Sermon on Philippians 4:1 - "It is the grand and indispepsable duty of all sincere saints, in the most black and shaking seasons, to stand fast fixed and stedfast in the Lord."

17- Matthew Mead - Sermon on 1 Corinthians 1:3 - Being therefore now to part, I thought to go to the top of the mount, and leave with you grace and peace from God our Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ. In which words there are two generals. 1. A double blessing desired: Grace and Peace 2. A double spring discovered: that is the Father and the Son, God and Christ.

18- Matthew Newcomen - Sermon on Revelation 3:3 - There are three doctrines obvious in the text; Doctrine 1. That it is the duty of christians, to remember those truths that they have heard and received. Doctrine 2. That it is the duty of christians to hold fast the truth that they have heard and received. Doctrine 3. That continued repentance is the duty of christians, as well as initial repentance. Remember therefore how thou hast received, and heard, and hold fast and repent.

19- Thomas Brooks - Sermon on Questions Asked and Answered followed by 27 Legacies that Brooks Left to his Beloved People

20- John Collins - Sermon on Jude 3 - These words contain two parts. 1. A duty exhorted to. 2. The manner of the management of duty. The duty exhorted to, is, to retain the faith delivered to the saints. The manner of its management is, that we should earnestly contend to keep it.

21- Edmund Calamy - Sermons 1 Samuel 4:13 - I shall gather two observations from the words. 1. That when the ark of God is in danger of being lost, the people of God have thoughtful heads and trembling hearts. 2. That a true child of God is more troubled, and more solicitous what shall become of the ark, than what shall become of wife and children or estate.

22- John Gaspine - Sermon on Luke 12:32 - The text contains that exhortation of Christ, wherein he exhorts them to undauntedness and resolution in the ways of God. " Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." The words may be divided into these two parts. First, Here is an exhortation: "Fear not, little flock." Secondly, The reason of this exhortation: "for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom."

23- Lazarus Seaman - Sermon on Hebrews 13:20,21 - In which words, there are two two things considerable. 1. The matter of the apostle's prayer. 2. The grounds, which he doth insinuate for audience.

24- George Evanke - Sermon on Matthew 26:39 - Doct. A gracious soul will endeavour the crossing his own will, when be sees that it crosses God's. Or, thus, A true Christian dare not, at least ought not, to gratify his own humour when it stands in opposition, or cometh in competition with God's honour.

A PURITAN THEOLOGY: Doctrine for Life
Joel Beeke & Mark Jones

Finally, the perfect companion to MEET THE PURITANS, this volume may be the most thorough volume ever produced on PURITAN THEOLOGY. The first printing of this volume sold out within the first few weeks and a second printing is already available.

Pastor Rob Ventura has said the following: ""What did the Puritans believe about God's providence and the perseverance of the saints? What were their views on conscience and Christ's intercession for us? In 'A Puritan Theology' compiled by Dr. Joel R. Beeke and Mark Jones, we have the answers to these and many other questions. In this unique one volume work we have a robust systematic theology drawn from the teachings of the most beloved Puritans: an outstanding achievement indeed! This resource is a must read for every pastor, seminarian and serious student of the Reformed Faith. It will be a volume that I turn to again and again."

Joel Beeke begins the Introduction with these words: "The word 'Puritan' originated in the 1560s as a bit of pejorative hurled at people who wanted further reformation in the Church of England. While some social historians think the term should be abandoned due to the various ways it was used during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, others who identify themselves as Reformed or Calvinistic defend the continuing use of the terms 'Puritan' and 'Puritanism.'

This book is about Puritan theology. Its chapters will address various areas of the systematic theology of Puritanism. Fine studies on Puritan theology already exist. Some address the Puritans in general, and some focus on the work of a particular Puritan theologian. To date, however, there has been no single work that provides an overview of Puritan thought concerning Scripture's major doctrines, historically and systematically considered. We hope this book will fill that gap. We will begin by stating what we will and will not cover, and why."

THE RISEN CHRIST CONQUERS MARS HILL: Classic Discourses on Paul's Ministry in Athens
Manton, Watson, Edwards, Davies, Dick, Thornwell, Eadie, Ryle, Warfield, Stonehouse, Van Til & Bahnsen, Foreword by Sinclair Ferguson

We have gathered together a full dozen champions of the faith to expound upon Paul's ministry in Athens. It is believed that traversing this powerful passage in Acts 17 will deepen our faith in the risen and conquering Lord. We have decided to list these works in the order in which they were delivered, thus Thomas Manton is first and Greg Bahnsen is last. Although there will certainly be some repetition of thoughts and ideas, it is believed that the various gifts and approaches of each man will give a freshness to each discourse.

SINCLAIR FERGUSON wrote the Foreword in which he says, "From the opening exposition of a seventeenth century Westminster Divine to the closing expositions of three twentieth century scholars associated with Westminster Seminary, 'The Risen Christ Conquers Mars Hill' is a brilliantly conceived compilation of studies calculated both to educate and to stimulate. Paul's great sermon to the intellectual elite of a declining Athens is one of the great moments in Church history. It well repays careful study for its foundational theology, its methodology as a presentation of the gospel of God to a pagan audience, and for the passion for Christ that lay behind it. Here is careful theological exegesis, biblical doctrine, practical application, and sharp-edged apologetics all in one volume. The result? A book that cannot fail to instruct the mind, encourage confidence in the gospel's integrity, and challenge the church to a new boldness in witnessing to our paganism-restoring culture."

DR. JOEL BEEKE wrote, "This fascinating collection of addresses on an important issue in our day is a gold mine, full of practical guidance for effective evangelizing and apologetics. It is amazing how contemporary these writers can sound when addressing how to relate to the unsaved who reject the gospel. We may perhaps find new venues to speak into but the message of the gospel remains eternally the same, and our forbears have a great deal to teach us about how to communicate that message. Tolle lege (take up and read)--and pray and do!"

DR. SAM WALDRON said the following about this special volume: "Few passages are as important as Acts 17 for the subjects of apologetics and evangelism in this post-modern age. And few passages have over the years been more badly misinterpreted than Paul's address to the Areopagus in Athens. Let me especially commend the articles by Stonehouse, Bahnsen, and Van Til towards the end of this volume. They are worth the price by themselves."

THE LATE DR. ROBERT PAUL MARTIN added, "Paul's address at Mars Hill gives us a glimpse into how the gospel was effectively preached in a thoroughly pagan culture, such as the one in which we now live. Gleaning the best treatments of this address from past ages, Solid Ground has given us a primer on how to speak to our contemporaries."

THE COMPLETE EXEGETICAL & DOCTRINAL WORKS OF WILLIAM PERKINS
William Perkins

The Works of William Perkins fills a major gap in Reformed and Puritan theology. Though Perkins is best known today for his writings on predestination, he also wrote prolifically on many subjects. His works filled over two thousand large pages of small print in three folio volumes and were reprinted several times in the decades after his death. However, his complete works have not been in print since the mid-seventeenth century. This modern typeset edition of the Works includes four volumes of Perkins's expositions of Scripture, three volumes of his doctrinal and polemical treatises, and three volumes of his practical writings.

THE EXEGETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM PERKINS (in Four Volumes)

VOLUME ONE: contains three of Perkins's treatises.

The First is 'A Digest or Harmony of the Books of the Old and New Testament', which offers a synopsis of the Bible that relates sacred history to the chronology of the world. Dating God's creation of the universe in 3967 BC, Perkins develops his overview of redemptive history that culminates in the final judgment.

The Second treatise is 'The Combat between Christ and the Devil Displayed.' Expounding Matthew 4:1-11, Perkins shows how Christ's temptation in the wilderness (1) set Jesus up to serve as the second Adam, overcoming Satan's temptation in a way the first Adam did not; (2) reveals how the devil assaults the church so that we might be better prepared to resist his temptations; and (3) equipped Christ to be a sympathetic high priest to those who are tempted.

The Third and most significant treatise is 'A Godly and Learned Exposition upon Christ's Sermon in the Mount'. "Hereof I have chosen to entreat," says Perkins, "because it is a most divine and learned sermon, and may not unfitly be called the 'Key to the whole Bible'; for here Christ opens the sum of the Old and New Testaments." The fact that Perkins saw the Sermon on the Mount as unlocking the meaning of Scripture in its entirety suggests that his understanding of what Christ declares in Matthew 5-7 was pivotal to the development of his theology and piety.

VOLUME TWO: Expositional Commentary on Galatians

This second volume contains Perkins's Commentary on Galatians. Perkins preached on Galatians each Lord's Day for over three years. Ralph Cudworth obtained Perkins's handwritten notes and edited them for publication. Because Perkins did not complete the commentary, Cudworth supplemented the manuscript with his own comments on chapter 6.

This commentary of Perkins and Cudworth on Galatians first appeared in print in 1604, two years after Perkins's death. Perkins's other writings had already begun to be gathered and published. When the three-volume edition of his collected works first appeared, Galatians occupied over 320 large folio pages in the second volume (1609). It continued to appear as a part of several editions of the Works through their final 1635 reprint. Evidently, interest in the commentary warranted its publication again as a separate volume in 1617.

Following the model taught in his treatise The Art of Prophesying, Perkins's pattern in commenting on Galatians is to explain the text, deduce a few points of doctrine from it, answer objections raised against the doctrine, and then give practical uses of what the passage teaches.

VOLUME THREE: A Cloud of Faithful Witnesses, Leading to the Heavenly Canaan (on Hebrews 11)

Over 460 pages of brilliant exposition on one glorious chapter of Holy Scripture. Perkins rivals the brilliant Thomas Manton in these messages on the most famous chapter in Hebrews. THIS BOOK BECAME AVAILABLE IN FEBRUARY 2017.

VOLUME FOUR: A Godly and Learned Exposition of Jude & Revelation 1 - 3

Perkins covers every verse and every word of The Epistle of Jude in 267 pages of brilliant and passionate exposition based upon sound exegesis. He then spend nearly 400 pages examining every inspired word of the first three chapters of Revelation. THIS BOOK HAS JUST BECOME AVAILABLE IN LATE MAY 2017.

VOLUME FIVE: A Body of Divinity, Consisting of His Exposition of the Apostle's Creed, the Lord's Prayer and The Foundation of Christian Religion Gathered into Six Principles

VOLUME SIX: Includes, THE GOLDEN CHAIN (includes the famous Perkins Chart), THE MANNER AND ORDER OF PREDESTINATION, TREATISE ON GOD'S FREE GRACE & MAN'S FREE WILL, FRUITFUL DIALOGUE CONCERNING THE E ND OF THE WORLD, AGAINST ALEXANDER DICKSON, ON MEMORY

THIS COMPLETES THE EXEGETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM PERKINS

The remaining volumes will be -

THE DOCTRINAL & POLEMICAL WORKS (in 3 volumes)

VOLUME SIX: Includes, THE GOLDEN CHAIN (includes the famous Perkins Chart), THE MANNER AND ORDER OF PREDESTINATION, TREATISE ON GOD'S FREE GRACE & MAN'S FREE WILL, FRUITFUL DIALOGUE CONCERNING THE E ND OF THE WORLD, AGAINST ALEXANDER DICKSON, ON MEMORY

THE PRACTICAL WORKS (in 3 volumes)

VOLUME SEVEN: This seventh volume includes three treatises that strike a helpful balance of emphases on theology, history, and practice.

A Reformed Catholic exists as a systematic, theological presentation of Perkins’s Reformed soteriology in contrast with the Church of Rome.

Perkins’s Problem of the Forged Catholicism is an exercise in historical theology, proving from the primary source documents of church history that the Roman Catholicism articulated at Trent is not supported by the first twelve hundred years of the church’s witness.

A Warning Against Idolatry handles worship practices—including liturgies, ceremonies, customs, and rites—concluding that all the externals of worship must be regulated by Scripture in the strictest sense.

Taken as a whole, Perkins’s polemical work against the Church of Rome draws a clear dividing line between Roman Catholicism and the Reformed tradition.

VOLUME EIGHT: This eighth volume includes five treatises meant to promote a good conscience before God.

A Discourse of Conscience establishes a framework for understanding the importance of conscience and how it functions.

The Whole Treatise of the Cases of Conscience is an extensive treatment of casuistry that treats man in his three principle conditions (by himself, in relation to God, and in relation to others).

A Treatise Tending unto a Declaration whether a Man Is in the Estate of Damnation or in the Estate of Grace distinguishes between true and false professors, demonstrates how Roman Catholicism falls short of assurance, and highlights the devil’s attempts to sully the consciences of God’s people.

A Case of Conscience gives full attention to the importance of personal assurance of salvation.

A Grain of Mustard Seed provides consolation to weak Christians by encouraging them to recognize and grow in gratitude for the grace they have.

There is much in the present volume to commend to the reader, but what clearly stands out is Perkins’s skill as a spiritual adviser.

VOLUME NINE: This ninth volume brings together nine of Perkins’s lesser known practical treatises and, by so doing, introduces the reader to important facets of his religion of the heart.

It opens with two works on what it means to look to Christ: A Declaration of the True Manner of Knowing Christ Crucified and The True Gain.

This is followed by A Faithful and Plain Exposition upon Zephaniah 2:1–2, which gives an earnest call to repentance, and The Nature and Practice of Repentance as well as The Combat of the Flesh and Spirit, which give systematic explanations of the doctrine of repentance.

A Treatise of Man’s Imaginations discusses man’s desperate need for renewal of mind.

A Direction for the Government of the Tongue According to God’s Word argues that one’s speech is the most significant change related to a renewed heart.

The volume finishes with A Discourse of the Damned Art of Witchcraft and A Resolution to the Country Man on Prognostication, which rebuke those who dally with occult practices.

Each treatise in this volume occupies an important place in Perkins’s experiential piety—what he himself described as “the more sincere profession of religion.”

VOLUME TEN: This tenth volume brings together seven treatises that demonstrate Perkins’s core conviction that the gospel touches all of life by bringing it under the rule of Scripture. Treatise on How to Live Well in All Estates opens the volume with a description of the reign of faith in Christians’ hearts so that they avoid sin and pursue the will of God in all they do. Treatise on Vocations explains how God calls Christians to live out their faith in whatever responsibilities they hold within society. Right Manner of Erecting and Ordering a Family applies the concept of vocation to life in the home. Calling of the Ministry applies vocation to the church, describing the duties and dignities of the ministers of Christ. Art of Prophesying equips those called to the ministry with the proper manner and method of preaching God’s Word. Christian Equity exhorts Christians to maintain justice and preserve peace, whether in families, church, or the greater commonwealth. Having finished with principles of living by faith, the volume ends with Treatise on Dying Well, which discusses the importance of faith at the end of life.

ENDORSEMENTS FROM MODERN MEN

"On the broad shoulders of William Perkins, epoch-making pioneer, stood the entire school of seventeenth-century Puritan pastors and divines, yet the Puritan reprint industry has steadily bypassed him. Now, however, he begins to reappear, admirably edited, and at last this yawning gap is being filled. Profound thanks to the publisher and heartfelt praise to God have become due." - J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

"William Perkins was a most remarkable Christian. In his relatively short life he was a great preacher, pastor, and theologian. His prolific writings were foundational to the whole English Puritan enterprise and a profound influence beyond his own time and borders. His works have become rare, and their republication must be a source of real joy and blessing to all serious Christians. Perkins is the first Puritan we should read." - W. Robert Godfrey, president, Westminster Seminary California

"The list of those influenced by the ministry of William Perkins reads like a veritable Who's Who of the Puritan Brotherhood and far beyond. This reprinting of his works, so long unobtainable except by a few, is therefore a publishing event of the first magnitude." - Sinclair B. Ferguson, professor of systematic theology, Redeemer Theological Seminary, Dallas

CONTEMPORARY DESCRIPTIONS OF PERKINS

"Perkins was justly esteemed by his contemporaries as a master in theology." - Charles H. Spurgeon

"In orderliness of method and vivid description, William Perkins takes the crown." - Gisbertus Voetius

"I gladly call to mind the time, when being young, I heard, worthy Master Perkins, so preach in a great assembly of students, that he instructed them soundly in the truth, stirred them up effectually to seek after godliness, made them fit for the kingdom of God; and by his own example shewing them, what things they should chiefly intend, that they might promote true religion, in the power of it, unto God's glory, and others' salvation." - William Ames

"Mr. Perkins's sermons were all law and all gospel. He was a rare instance of those opposite gifts meeting in so eminent a degree in the same preacher, even the vehemence and thunder of Boanerges, to awaken sinners to a sense of their sin and danger, and to drive them from destruction; and the persuasion and comfort of Barnabas, to pour the wine and oil of gospel consolation into their wounded spirits." - Benjamin Brook

ENDORSEMENTS

“There is something gripping, something quotable, about the Puritans as they ransack Scripture and expound it in thoughts that are riveting in their word choices and metaphors, and one cannot but feel deeply the full force of the truths they convey. This, I trust, is a book that you will return to repeatedly for the rest of your life.” — Joel R. Beeke, from the foreword

“Encyclopedic, doctrinal, spiritual, devotional, and readable—Ore from the Puritans’ Mine has it all. Packed with insight, liberally sprinkled with turns of phrase and figures of speech that shed rays of light on a wide variety of subjects, here is a treasure trove of seasoned wisdom to reflect on, apply, and share. Truly a book for every Christian home.” — Sinclair B. Ferguson, chancellor’s professor of systematic theology, Reformed Theological Seminary

“No group of people in church history had such a profound and comprehensive theology as the Puritans. Because their works can be dense in length and depth they can easily overwhelm the reader. I am thankful to Dale Smith for providing a map to navigate the mines of the Puritans’ theological and practical wisdom in this new book of rich quotations.” — John MacArthur, senior pastor-teacher, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, California

“With a title and approach reminiscent of Charles Spurgeon’s Flowers from a Puritan’s Garden (1883), Ore from the Puritans’ Mine is just that—a gold mine of quotations excavated from the mines of the most well-known Puritan titans—including John Owen, Richard Baxter, Richard Sibbes, Thomas Goodwin, Samuel Rutherford, John Flavel, Thomas Brooks, Thomas Manton, and Thomas Boston. Since the work has organized these quotations around a wealth of major biblical, theological, experiential, and practical subjects, it is an invaluable resource for preachers, pastors, teachers, and theologians alike. It is my hope that those who put this ore to good gospel use will be encouraged to put on their hard hats and go down in the rich, still untapped mine of the Puritans.” — Greg A. Salazar, assistant professor of historical theology, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

“Readers will be grateful for Dale Smith’s careful gathering of this diverse and rich anthology of Puritan quotations. For those unfamiliar with the Puritans, this is an excellent introduction to the major themes of their theology and piety. For others who already know the treasures of Puritan writers, this can serve as a handy reference guide for preaching and teaching or a valuable resource for devotional reading. This volume deserves a broad reception, and I highly recommend it!” — Tom Schwanda, associate professor, emeritus, of Christian Formation and Ministry, Wheaton College

“What a treasure this is! An invaluable aid to writers, preachers, and Sunday school teachers. Pure gold.” — Derek W. H. Thomas, senior minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia South Carolina

“As a preacher expounding books of Scripture week by week, I found a couple volumes of quotations invaluable. What was the theme of the text? Creation? Conscience? Trials? Mortification? Evangelistic concern? I found fertility, illumination, warmth, and sheer edification in those books. How I wish that this precious volume had been in my hands twenty years ago. Get it! And use it as its compiler recommends.” — Geoffrey Thomas, emeritus pastor, Alfred Place Baptist Church, Aberystwyth, Wales

THE WORKS OF GEORGE SWINNOCK (in 5 hardcover volumes)
GEORGE SWINNOCK

‘His work comes “from one both of a good head and heart”.’ — THOMAS MANTON

‘George Swinnock had the gift of illustration largely developed, as his works prove…they served his purpose, and made his teaching attractive…there remains “a rare amount of sanctified wit and wisdom”.’ — C. H. SPURGEON

‘We confess that we have rejoiced in the writings of Swinnock as those that find great spoil. So pithy and pungent and practical, few books are more fitted to keep the attention awake, and few so richly reward it.’ — DR. JAMES HAMILTON

‘Swinnock’s principal work, The Christian Man’s Calling, is one of the fullest, and, we venture to think, one of the best exhibitions of the gospel in its application to the ordinary affairs of life. There are few better works of practical religion in our language.’ — EDITOR of the NICHOLS REPRINT

Book Description

George Swinnock is one of the easiest of the Puritan authors to read. He is theological yet his doctrine is expressed in vivid fashion and, while he is practical, his counsel is marked by a keen sensitivity to the doctrines taught in Scripture. The five volumes of The Works of George Swinnock were the last major reprint to be undertaken in 1868 by James Nichol in his definitive series of the leading Puritan authors. They have long been rare and unobtainable in the secondhand market.

Volumes 1, 2, and the first part of Volume 3 of The Works of George Swinnock contain his best-known work, The Christian Man’s Calling. With characteristic Puritan concern for the integrity of truth and life, Swinnock ranges over the practical implications of Paul’s emphasis on ‘training for godliness’ (1 Tim. 4:7) He explores this in many areas: spiritual disciplines, personal lifestyle, relations in the home, marriage and daily work, in times of prosperity and adversity, in a hostile world and at the time of death.

Volume 3 also contains the ‘grave and judicious’ Heaven and Hell Epitomised and part of Swinnock’s valuable The Fading of the Flesh, an exposition of Psalm 73:26 on the theme of preparation for death.

In volume 4 The Fading of the Flesh is concluded. It is followed by The Pastor’s Farewell (Swinnock’s valedictory sermon in Rickmansworth) and three expositions of the work of the magistrate: The Gods are Men, The Beauty of Magistracy (by Thomas Hall) and Men are Gods. It concludes with a rich practical study of the divine attributes entitled The Incomparableness of God.

The Door of Salvation Opened by the Key of Regeneration, a ‘savoury treatise’ (Richard Baxter), opens volume 5. The Works then conclude with The Sinner’s Last Sentence, posthumously published sermons on Matthew 25:41-2 containing some two hundred pages of counsel on the seriousness of sin.

PURITAN PAPERBACKS: Rare Jewel of Christian Contenment; Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices & The Incomparableness of God
Jeremiah Burroughs; Thomas Brooks; George Swinnock

(1) THE RARE JEWEL OF CHRISTIAN CONTENTMENT by Jeremiah Burroughs

Jeremiah Burroughs is worthily reckoned as belonging to the front rank of English puritan preachers. As such he played a prominent part in the Westminster Assembly of divines, but died prematurely before the Assembly’s work was concluded.

Burroughs' writings, some published before and others after his death, were numerous, but 'The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment 'is one of the most valuable of them all. Its author was much concerned to promote (1) peace among believers of various ‘persuasions’ (2) peace and contentment in the hearts of individual believers during what he describes as ‘sad and sinking times’. The Rare Jewel concentrates upon this second aim. It is marked by sanity, clarity, aptness of illustration, and warmth of appeal to the heart. ‘There is an ark that you may come into, and no men in the world may live such comfortable, cheerful and contented lives as the saints of God’. Burroughs presses his lesson home with all the fervour and cogency of a true and faithful minister of God.

(2) PRECIOUS REMEDIES AGAINST SATAN'S DEVICES by Thomas Brooks

Brooks treated the seductive influence and terrible power of Satan in a way greatly more full and suggestive than in the literature of the present day.

Brooks lists seven reasons for writing this book. The first reason is enough…Brooks says, “Satan hath a greater influence upon men, and higher advantages over them than they think he hath, and the knowledge of his high advantage is the highway to disappoint him, and to render the soul strong in resisting, and happy in conquering.

6 By persuading the soul that repentance is easy and that therefore the soul need not scruple about sinning 55

7 By making the soul bold to venture upon the occasions of sin 66

8 By representing to the soul the outward mercies enjoyed by men walking in sin, and their freedom from outward miseries 70

9 By presenting to the soul the crosses, losses, sorrows and sufferings that daily attend those who walk in the ways of holiness 79

10 By causing saints to compare themselves and their ways with those reputed to be worse than themselves 89

11 By polluting the souls and judgments of men with dangerous errors that lead to looseness and wickedness 92

12 By leading men to choose wicked company 99

8 By tempting Christians to rest in their performances 139

SATAN’S DEVICES TO KEEP SAINTS IN A SAD, DOUBTING, QUESTIONING AND UNCOMFORTABLE CONDITION

4 By suggesting to saints that their graces are not true, but counterfeit 154

5 By suggesting to saints that the conflict that is in them is found also in hypocrites and profane souls 162

6 By suggesting to the saint who has lost joy and comfort that his state is not good 167

7 By reminding the saint of his frequent relapses into sin formerly repented of and prayed against 171

8 By persuading saints that their state is not good nor their graces sound 176

(3) THE INCOMPARABLENESS OF GOD: In His Being, Attributes, Works and Word by George Swinnock

George Swinnock is one of the easiest Puritan authors to read. He is theological yet his doctrine is expressed in vivid fashion and, while he is practical, his counsel is marked by a keen sensitivity to the doctrines taught in Scripture. Thomas Manton commended his work as coming ‘from one both of a good head and heart.’ In this exposition of Psalm 89:6, which looks at the incomparable being, attributes, works, and word of God, Swinnock is not content to let the truth lie on the surface of the mind. He drives it home to the heart, using powerful arguments, colourful illustrations, and personal applications. His great desire is for the reader to come to know, enjoy and love the incomparable God of the Bible. ‘He who knows God aright is fully satisfied in him; when he once drinks of the “fountain of living waters,” he thirsts no more after other objects.’

‘The holiness and happiness of the rational creature consists in these two: his holiness, in conformity to God; his happiness, in communion with him. And these two have a dependence on each other. They only who are like him, can enjoy him.’
