click for details		THE SHORTER CATECHISM ILLUSTRATED: From Christian History and Biography John Whitecross "This unusual volume follows the doctrinal structure of the classic Puritan catechism, expanding each doctrinal point not with exposition, as is customary, but with many factual stories well selected by the author from a wide range of sources. Thus such subjects as Providence, Prayer and The Ten Commandments are illuminated with telling and sometimes fascinating narratives. First published in 1828, and passing through many editions in the last century, the book has been revised for greater usefulness today. SAMPLES: Matthew Henry, a little before his death, said to a friend, "You have been accustomed to take notice of the sayings of dying men: this is mine, That a life spent in the service of God, and in communion with Him, is the most comfortable and pleasant life that any one can live in this world." A Polish prince was accustomed to carry the picture of his father always in his bosom; and on particular occasions used to take it out and view it, saying, "Let me do nothing unbecoming so excellent a father." A suitable reflection for a Christian! The punctuality of John Newton, while tide-surveyor at Liverpool, was particularly remarked. One day, however, some business had detained him, and he came to his boat much later than usual, to the surprise of those who had observed his former punctuality. He went out in the boat as heretofore, to inspect a ship, but by some accident the ship blew up just before he reached it; and it appears, that if he had left the shore a few minutes sooner, he must have perished with the rest on board. It was remarked by one, 'If I have been honored to do any good in my day; if I have been of any use to the church of Christ, to my family, and to my fellow-creatures; if I have enjoyed any happiness in life (and I am happy to say I have had a large share); if I have any hope beyond the grave, and that hope I would not exchange for a thousand worlds-I owe all to the Bible.' In the Memoirs of Thomas Boston of Ettrick appears the following: Singing at family worship Psalm 121, this view of the Bible was given me, namely, that whatever were the particular occasions of the writing of it or any part thereof, I am to look upon it as written for me as much as if there were not another person in the world, and so is everybody else to whose hand it comes.' Sometimes there were more kings than one in Sparta, who governed by joint authority. A king was occasionally sent to some neighbouring senate in the character of a Spartan ambassador. Did he, when so sent, cease to be a king of Sparta, because he was also an ambassador? No; he did not divest himself of his regal dignity, but only added to it that of public deputation. So Christ, in becoming man, did not cease to be God; but though He ever was, and still continued to be, King of the whole creation, He acted as the voluntary servant and messenger of the Father. Among the many whom George Whitefield was honored to be the means of converting to the knowledge and love of the truth, and who will be a crown of joy to him in the day of the Lord, it is perhaps not generally known that the celebrated James Hervey is to be mentioned. In a letter to Whitefield, Hervey expresses himself thus: 'Your journals, dear sir, and sermons, especially that sweet sermon on What think ye of Christ? were the means of bringing me to the knowledge of the truth.' David Dickson, once Professor of Divinity in Edinburgh, being asked, when on his deathbed, how he found himself answered, "I have taken my good deeds and bad deeds, and thrown them together in a heap, and fled from them both to Christ, and in Him I have peace." John Whitecross, a schoolmaster, knew well what would gain the attention of the young and the book can be recommended for children of ten and over; it will also be of general interest to all readers and a valuable treasury of illustrative matter for the many in the home, school or church who have the responsibility of making Biblical teaching interesting. He was the son of Baptist minister John Beddome. He was apprenticed to a surgeon in Bristol, but moved to London in 1839 and joined the Baptist church in Prescott Street. At the call of his church, he devoted himself to the work of Christian ministry, and in 1740 began to preach at Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire. For many years he was one of the most respected Baptist ministers in western England. He was also a man of some literary culture. In 1752, he wrote "Exposition of the Baptist Catechism." In 1770, Beddome received a MA degree from Providence College, Rhode Island. It was Beddome's practice to write a hymn weekly for use after his Sunday morning sermon. Though not originally intended for publication, he allowed 13 of these to appear in the Bristol Baptist Collection of Ash & Evans (1769), and 36 in Rippon's Selections (1787). In 1817, a posthumous collection of his hymns was published, containing 830 pieces. Robert Hall wrote of Beddome's hymns: "The man of taste will be gratified with the beauty and original turns of thought which many of them exhibit, while the experimental Christian will often perceive the most secret movements of his soul strikingly delineated, and sentiments portrayed which will find their echo in every heart." He died September 23, 1795, at Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, England. His father, John Boston, and his mother, Alison Trotter, were both Covenanters. He was educated at Edinburgh, and licensed in 1697 by the presbytery of Chirnside. In 1699 he became minister of the small parish of Simprin, where there were only 90 examinable persons. In 1704 he found, while visiting a member of his flock, a book brought into Scotland by a commonwealth soldier. This was the famous Marrow of Modern Divinity, by Edward Fisher, a compendium of the opinions of leading Reformation divines on the doctrine of grace and the offer of the Gospel, which set off the Marrow Controversy. Its object was to demonstrate the unconditional freeness of the Gospel. It cleared away such conditions as repentance, or some degree of outward or inward reformation, and argued that where Christ is heartily received, full repentance and a new life follow. On Boston's recommendation, James Hog of Carnock reprinted The Marrow in 1718; and Boston also published an edition with notes of his own. The book, being attacked from the standpoint of high Calvinism, became the standard of a far-reaching movement in Scottish Presbyterians. The Marrow men were marked by the zeal of their service and the effect of their preaching. As they remained Calvinists they could not preach a universal atonement; rather they were particular redemptionists. In 1707 Boston was transferred to Ettrick, Scotland. He distinguished himself by being the only member of the assembly who entered a protest against what he deemed the inadequate sentence passed on John Simson, professor of divinity at Glasgow, who was accused of heterodox teaching on the Incarnation. Boston, if unduly introspective, was a man of singular piety and amiability. His autobiography is an interesting record of Scottish life, full of sincerity and tenderness, and not devoid of humorous touches, intentional and otherwise. About a year and half after this occurrence, the distributor of the Testaments was on a short journey through the South of France, and stopped on his way at a roadside inn for refreshment and a night's lodging. On entering the house, he soon perceived that something of a sad nature had happened to the landlady. On inquiring what it was, she informed him that her eldest son had been buried that very week. She went on very naturally to dilate on his many excellencies, and spoke of his happy deathbed. 'And sir,' said she, 'all his happiness was got from a little book that was given him sometime ago.' The traveler inquired further concerning the little book. 'You shall see it,' said the mother, 'it is upstairs.' She soon returned with the book. When I considered the answer to it—"To glorify God, and to enjoy Him for ever"—I was struck with shame and confusion. I found I had never sought to glorify God in my life, nor had I any idea of what was meant by enjoying Him for ever. Death and judgment were set before me; my past sins came to my remembrance; I saw no way to escape the punishment due unto them, nor had I the least glimmering hope of obtaining the pardon of them through the righteousness of another.' From this unhappy state she was shortly after delivered, by believing on the Lord Jesus as the only Savior of the guilty. Such was James Hervey's strict piety, that he suffered no moment to go unimproved. When he was called down to tea, he used to bring his Hebrew Bible or Greek Testament with him; and would either speak upon one verse or upon several verses, as occasion offered. 'This,' says William Romaine, 'was generally an improving season. The glory of God is very seldom promoted at the tea-table; but it was at Mr Hervey's. Drinking tea with him, was like being at an ordinance; for it was sanctified by the Word of God, and prayer.' An eminent minister, after having been silent in company for a considerable time, on being asked the reason, signified that the powers of his mind had been solemnly absorbed with the thought of eternal happiness. 'Oh, my friends,' said he, with an energy that surprised all present, 'consider what it is to be for ever with the Lord-for ever, for ever, for ever.' A French officer, who was a prisoner upon his parole at Reading, met with a Bible, read it, and was so struck with its contents, that he was convinced of the folly of skeptical principles, and of the truth of Christianity, and so resolved to become a Protestant. When his gay associates rallied him for taking so serious a turn, he said in his vindication, 'I have done no more than my old school-fellow Bernadotte, who has become a Lutheran.' 'Yes, but he became so,' said his associates, 'to obtain a crown.' 'My motive,' said the Christian officer, 'is the same; we only differ as to the place. The object of Bernadotte is to obtain a crown in Sweden, mine is to obtain a crown in heaven.' Mr Robinson, a member of the presbytery of New Brunswick, was the son of a wealthy Quaker in England. Being permitted to pay a visit to an aunt in London, from whom he had considerable expectations, and becoming very fond of the dissipation of the town, he incurred debt, which so involved him, that he determined to quit his native country, and seek his fortune in America. Soon after his arrival, he had recourse, for subsistence, to teaching in a school in New Jersey. After he had been for some time engaged in this business, without any practical sense of religion, he was riding at a late hour one evening, when the moon and stars shone with unusual brightness. while he was meditating on the beauty and grandeur of the scene, and was saying to himself 'how transcendentally glorious must be the Author of all this beauty and grandeur I' the thought struck him with the suddenness and force of lightning—'But what do I know of this God? Have I ever sought His favor, or made Him my friend?' This happy impression, which proved, by its permanency and effects, to have come from the best of all sources, never left him until he took refuge in Christ, as the hope and life of his soul. Thomas Carlyle, in speaking against modern materialism in 1876, made this confession: "The older I grow, and I am now upon the brink of eternity, the more comes back to me the first sentence of the Catechism which I learned when a child, and the fuller and deeper its meaning becomes, ‘What is the chief end of man? To glorify God, and to enjoy Him for ever.'" Regarding aesthetics, this little book is gorgeous. The dust jacket is well-designed. The cover itself looks really nice on the shelf. The type and format is very easy on the eyes. This is about what you’d expect from a Banner of Truth hardcover, and I mean that as a very high compliment. The content of this book is wonderful. As a general rule, you should read the introduction of books. Robert White’s introduction here is especially helpful, giving the reader good background on Calvin’s preaching in general, the history of his sermons on Isaiah in particular, and the theology of these specific sermons on Isaiah. Once you get past the introduction and into Calvin himself, it just keeps getting better and better. Calvin was a brilliant theologian and exegete of scripture, but he was also a faithful pastor. Most people are familiar with the former but not the latter. This book is one of a growing body of work that seeks to change this unfamiliarity. It’s truly a wonderful and edifying read! Much could be said about the translator, Robert White. I can’t comment on the quality of the translation, as I don’t know French. What’s beyond doubt for me, however, is that White is quickly asserting himself (rightly so) as one of the greats of Calvin scholarship, up there with names like Henry Beveridge and Ford Lewis Battles. Whereas Beveridge and Battles made great contributions in translating Calvin’s theological works, White has had a unique impact in his overwhelming (though not exclusive) focus on Calvin’s sermons. I commend White for his contributions, and I truly believe he will go down as one of the greats. In short, this volume is well worth the investment. 		THE CHILDREN OF CHURCH MEMBERS RICHARD FURMAN The subject matter taken up in the following article ought to be of great interest to Baptists in particular as well as all who long to see the advancement of Christ’s kingdom in the hearts of those children whose faces adorn their congregational times of worship and study. It is here reprinted in the hope that those who have Baptist convictions concerning the matter of membership in Christ’s church might be strengthened in their position as well as challenged to be diligent to make use of all responsible means in the evangelism of the children God has given them as an inheritance. Originally written as a circular letter to the Charleston Baptist Association, this article demonstrates the definite theological character of the union enjoyed among the Baptists in days gone by. It was the custom of Baptist associations to appoint various ministers to write on a particular subject of Christian doctrine and the finished product was distributed among the churches as a means of instruction and edification. This, of course, necessitated a basic doctrinal agreement as well as a basic understanding of biblical and theological matters. Certainly our generation would be blessed if such a practice were to be re-instituted in our day. The Charleston Baptist Association In 1749, Mr. Oliver Hart became pastor of the First Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina. He had been active in the Philadelphia Baptist Association, and subsequently he gave great impetus to the formation of the Charleston Baptist Association (October 21, 1751), the first association in the South. It is this association which might rightly be called the “womb” from which the Southern Baptist Convention was born. Beginning with four churches, this association was thoroughly Calvinistic in its doctrinal position, adopting the London Baptist Confession of 1689 as its confession of faith. In later years (1813) this association would commission the printing of a document for use in the churches which came to be known as The Charleston Manual, consisting of The London Baptist Confession, A Summary of Church Discipline, and The Baptist Catechism. In considering the importance of this association, it should be acknowledged that no discussion of “Southern Baptist heritage” can be either meaningful or honest without examining the doctrine and practices of the Charleston Association. Dr. Richard Furman "The author of this article was born in New York in 1755, though his family moved to South Carolina while he was still an infant. Cathcart says of his childhood, “Before he could hold the family Bible he would lay it on a stool and ask to be taught to read it, and as soon as he acquired the art, reading it was his chief delight.” He played a very influential part in the Revolutionary War, as did many Baptists of his day. Among those who regularly sat under his ministry during this time was Patrick Henry. In 1787 he became the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where he labored faithfully for 37 years. His ministry was greatly blessed by God. In 1814 he was unanimously elected the first president of the Triennial Convention. During his life he championed the cause of ministerial education.
