CURRENT CRISIS HAS CAUSED US TO REDUCE THE PRICE OF THIS GEM TO $3.00 EACH. NOT FOR RE-SALE.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - Solid Ground Christian Books has purchased the rights to take over the Calvary Press edition of this timeless work. NOW AVAILABLE TO SHIP

Published over 120 years ago in this volume by the Bishop of Liverpool in England he opened his heart to the future of his country.

"RYLE IS MAGNIFICENT! There's no other word for it, - are you brave enough to face hard-hitting truth and have God search your heart on things that matter most? Then Ryle is the man for you! Do yourself a favor - read this and think about what you read." - J.I. Packer

"I heartily endorse it, and strongly commend it to both Christian leaders and fathers, not to mention older and younger men alike." - John MacArthur, Jr.

"Thoughts for Young Men is pure spiritual gold." - Jerry Bridges

"Thoughts for Young Men abounds in reliable counsel and says - with a rare combination of seriousness and graciousness - the very things we need to hear. Young men, for whom it was written, will find it invaluable; but all Christians, men or women, young or old, can read it with lasting benefit. It deserves to be widely read and circulated, and will do spiritual good to every reader." - Sinclair Ferguson

"THOUGHTS FOR YOUNG MEN is wise, frank, warm-hearted and hard-hitting. I hope that many, many young men will study it, and that parents and teachers will also read it in order to clarify their vision of what Christian young men should be. Although written over a century ago, the message is right up-to-date." - John R.W. Stott

"Out of Ryle's dealings with many young people came one of the most important and relevant things he ever wrote, his Thoughts for Young Men. The reading of this material could well be a turning point in the lives of many today across the world." - Iain Murray

"I am happy to commend the re-publication of Thoughts for Young Men." - Leon Morris

"Dear young friends, if you value your souls you will read Ryle's 'Thoughts for Young Men.' He did not know it but he was writing more for you than for his own youth." - John Gerstner

"Thoughts is sound, profitable reading. I commend it to young men everywhere." - James Montgomery Boice

"I am very thankful for your bringing into print once again Ryle's excellent book 'Thoughts for Young Men.' May it have a wide audience of those with ears to hear." - Elisabeth Elliot

OVER 100,000 HAVE SOLD SINCE IT FIRST RE-APPEARED IN 1990.

WONDERFUL NEWS: On Tuesday, May 12th, 2020 we received a call from Tom Nettles who informed me that he discovered that THOMAS MOOR, author of this book, was an Elder in C.H. Spurgeon's Park Street Chapel from the early years and one of his responsibilities was to Interview prospective members. Recently a book was published, titled WONDERS OF GRACE, compiled by Hannah Wycoll, which includes some 138 written testimonies recorded by the elders who received and recorded those testimonies. More than 20 of these were written by THOMAS MOOR, and written in a style very similar to his book COUNSELS & THOUGHTS which was published many years later (in 1882). Having uncovered this long-buried secret, it becomes evident where Moor was trained and prepared to write as he did so many years later.

THIS IS THE BOOK FEATURED IN DECEMBER 2019 IN THE OUTSTANDING DAILY DEVOTIONAL SERVICE 'WEB GEMS'

THIS IS A BRAND NEW EDITION OF THE 1883 SECOND EDITION OF A TRUE SPIRITUAL CLASSIC.

C.H. SPURGEON'S SWORD & THE TROWEL had this to say about this long-buried gem first published in 1882: "These are no ordinary religious 'snatches,' in the form of daily portions for believers. The author's vessel does not hug the coast of ordinary experience, but launches out into the deep waters of confident trust, assured faith, and intense consecration. Every paragraph tells of an experimental fellowship with Jesus and a closeness of intercourse which fit it for becoming the guide and adviser of others. Certainly there is here no milk for babes, but strong meat for those who are of full age."

DR. JOEL BEEKE, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan, "Would you like to read a great book on genuine Reformed spirituality that provides wise counsel to assist you in growing in conformity to Christ and in your walk with the triune God? Read this book, use it as a daily devotional, and savor its wisdom for your soul’s good."

DR. TOM NETTLES just wrote the following: "In our consistent legalistic propensity to look to some degree of merit in our works in order for God to bless us with his pleasure and presence, we need a consistent reminder of the spiritual power and absolute sufficiency to be found in the death of Christ and the perfection of his righteousness. This mysterious author has done all of us a spiritual favor by holding our feet to the fire in recognizing that all spiritual blessings of whatever sort come to us only in Christ and his redemptive work."

FOOTSTEPS OF TRUTH had the following glowing words for this book: "This is a choice volume, by no ordinary scribe; a delightful combination of the good old Puritan Doctrine and advanced spiritual instruction, such as could be given only by one deeply imbued with the unction of the Holy One, resulting from a comprehensive grasp of Scripture teaching, extending over the wide field of doctrine and practice, and bearing upon the INNER and OUTER life of the children of God. The Index on the opening pages (see below) awakens an appetite which is fully supplied in the rich fare throughout the book; and it seems to us impossible that any believer can rise from its perusal without a deeper sense of his indebtedness to God for the riches of grace he is here so sweetly reminded of as being provided for all his necessities in relation to life, conflict and final victory. This is truly a book for the times, and we give it our strongest commendation, hoping that the entire edition may be speedily exhausted."

AUTHOR'S PREFACE

"This book is published, as its title indicates, for the use of believers--that is, for the use of all whose who, through grace, have been effectually led to see, in some measure, their position as sinners before God, and their deep need of salvation through the atoning death of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Its aim, through the gracious influence of the Holy Spirit, is to be helpful to them for their establishment in the full assurance of faith, in relation to their perfected and unchanging salvation in Christ; also to be useful to them in their conflict with indwelling sin; and to assist them in their endeavor to live a life of faith on the Lord Jesus, to walk in daily fellowship with Him, and to be at all times His faithful witnesses.

It purposely contains repetitions of Gospel statements; for, although the spiritual needs of believers are many and varied, there is but one great fountain of fullness for all, even the Lord Jesus Christ Himself; for 'the sum of all spiritual progress and spiritual life is--more of Christ in the mind, better to know Him--more of Christ in the heart, better to love Him, and to be more influenced by Him--more of Christ in the life, better to serve Him' (page 166).

Moreover, those who have been privileged to have much intercourse with believers in relation to their spiritual experience in all its varied stages, and in relation to the many mistakes and heart troubles they fall into, are well aware that spiritual truths which the believer had often thought about, without any apparent benefit, have, when presented to the mind in a different form, or in a different relationship, or at a different time, often has been made instrumental of much blessing through the gracious influence of the Holy Spirit.

The fifth part of this book (pages 252-398) contains three divisions of briefer thoughts and counsels. Each division contains thirty-one; so that those who find them helpful in their spiritual life, may use them daily for three months.

One paper in the second part, two in the third, the last two in the fourth, and about one-third of the fifth part, were published separately some years ago. They have been revised, and are now included in this volume.

May our gracious Father--the Father also of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ--grant that this attempt to be useful to His eternally-loved, but often much-tried children, may result in much glory to the name of Jesus, in their hearts and lives, through the effectual blessing of the Holy Spirit."

Thomas Moor, July 1881

EXALTING CHRIST: Essays in Honor of Fred A. Malone
Edited by Steve Martin & Mitch Axsom

Ingratitude is one of the great sins of our time and one the Scripture singles out as a serious step down a slippery slope (Romans 1:18-19). When the creature does not give thanks and honor the Creator, reality is turned upside down and personal and cultural destruction are not far behind (Romans 1:18-32). Coupled with sinful ingratitude is a failure to give honor to whom honor is due. We honor God first and foremost and then the gifts He gives to men, especially to His Church. This book seeks to honor God and His gift to the Church, Fred Malone, Christian, husband, father, pastor, citizen, theologian, and man of God. May the essays within encourage you to exalt our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

HEROES OF THE EARLY CHURCH: Life-Changing Lessons for the Young
Richard Newton

"These graphic sketches of the 'Heroes of the Early Church' are the latest series penned by the distinguished author, whom Spurgeon fittingly called 'The Prince of Children's Preachers.' The sketches are in many respects the best work of the gifted man. As he ripened in saintship for heaven, his literary style became even more rich with the aroma of the gospel, and so more forcible, simple, and crisp, than in his earlier writings." - Edwin W. Rice, from the Preface

These helpful sketches are filled with lessons for the young and old alike on the lives of men like: Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Justin Martyr, Tertullian of Carthage, Origin of Alexandria, Eusebius of Caesarea, Athanasius the Great, Basil the Great, Ambrose of Milan, John Chrysostom, Jerome, Augustine and others.

SOUTHERN PRESBYTERIAN PULPIT: A Collection of Sermons from the Nineteenth Century
by Ministers of the Southern Presbyterian Church

"Two motives have prompted the issue of this volume. There has been a distinct demand for a book of practical sermons, suitable for reading in the public worship of God when conducted by ruling elders of the church.

But in addition to this motive, it has seemed very desirable to put in permanent form some examples of the work of our Southern Presbyterian pulpit, which is, we are confident, second to none in eloquence, dotrinal purity, persuasiveness, and practical power." - August 1896, from the Preface

In early 1897 The Presbyterian Quarterly gave the following Review of Southern Presbyterian Pulpit: "An inspection of the thirty-three sermons brought together and published in this book will readily show that the double purpose of the publishers, as set forth in the Preface, is fully accomplished. A careful examination of the several discourses reveals their strength, beauty, fervor and wonderfully evangelical spirit and soundness."

"I've often given printed sermons to the dying, grieving, confused and lost; sermons from this very book. You'll find sermons that speak to the heart in 'Southern Presbyterian Pulpit.' Acquaint yourself with the 'Spurgeons of America' and you'll find some preachers to imitate. They were truly 'Preachers with Power.' - C.N. Willborn PhD

Some of the more familiar names included are B.M. Palmer, Moses Hoge, George Armstrong, John Girardeau, and R.L. Dabney, but the remaining 28 men were all men committed to an authoritative Bible and an expository pulpit ministry.

The subjects covered are greatly varied: "The Transforming Power of the Gospel," "The Changing World and the Unchanging God," "Christ's Pastoral Presence with His Dying People," How Long Halt Ye Between Two Opinions?" and many others

THE GREAT INVITATION: Examining the Use of the Altar Call in Evangelism
Erroll Hulse

"The notion that sinners can secure their own salvation by a 'decision' is fraught with all kinds of theological mischief. It has reduced faith to bare intellectual assent, populated the church with people who have never even been convicted about their sin, and made public invitations into the same kind of sacramental indulgences the original Protestants repudiated. Erroll Hulse has given us a thorough biblical answer to this error and I'm glad to see it back in print." - Pastor John MacArthur

"Erroll Hulse's classic work is a biblical and balanced answer to modern decisionalism. Hulse shows from Scripture that there is a legitimate place for the ambassador of Christ to exhort sinners to be reconciled to God, to reason passionately with them from Scripture, to invite them to drink freely of the water of life, and to plead with them and beseech them to turn to the Savior. But he also stresses that regeneration is the work of the Holy Spirit to produce faith in the sinner, not a result of the sinner's independent 'decision.' The two ideas are perfectly harmonious, because our passionate preaching is the means by which God sovereignly and effectually calls the elect to himself." --Phil Johnson, Executive Director of 'Grace to You'

"Authored with a kind and gracious tone, this work nevertheless attempts to tackle the insidious 'easy-believism' of our day, and it is my opinion that he does so very effectively." --Lance Quinn

THIS SOLID HARDCOVER VOLUME CONTAINS TWO COMPLETE WORKS ON THIS VITAL SUBJECT.

LECTURES ON BAPTISM by WILLIAM SHIRREFF with a Preface by C.H. Spurgeon, and Editorial Notes by James A. Haldane

The object of these Lectures is to state the doctrine of the Scriptures on the ordinance of Christian Baptism. It is a very common, though a groundless and hurtful opinion, that the discussion of this subject is unnecessary. Positive institutions are far from being uninteresting to the friends of religion; in them the truth is embodied, and the observance of them, as of every precept of revelation, belongs to the obedience of faith, and comfort of the gospel. We have salutary warning in the Scriptures, that it is at our peril if we act on the popular error that positive institutions are unworthy of study and attention.

The value of this classic work is greatly enhanced by a helpful Prefatory Memoir by Charles H. Spurgeon, and even further by the insightful Editorial Notes by James A. Haldane.

BAPTISM AND BAPTISTERIES by Wolfred Nelson Cote, Missionary in Rome

While this second volume is not as long as the previous one, it is still a very substantial book which was first published in 1870. Cote, as a missionary in Rome, was able to gain access to an incredible library attached to the convent of the Dominicans, which was the richest in Rome in printed works. At the time of his life and ministry it consisted of more than 120,000 volumes, and contained a valuable collection of ancient manuscripts. One feature of this volume is some two dozen illustrations of baptistries from the early years of the Christian Church.

PART ONE: Baptism (pp. 11-99)

PART TWO: Baptistries in Italy (pp. 100-165)

INDEX: (pp. 167-170)

HAVING THESE TWO VOLUMES UNDER ONE COVER MAKES IT AN INCREDIBLE BLESSINGS.

THE FEAR OF GOD: The Soul of Godliness
John Murray

'THE FEAR OF GOD' BY JOHN MURRAY IS BACK IN PRINT ONCE AGAIN!

This material is taken from Murray's classic work on Biblical Ethics entitled PRINCIPLES OF CONDUCT. It is a wonderful introduction to a vital area that is largely ignored in our day. Although brief, as with all of Murray's writings, it is a very full and weighty piece of practical theology, that should end in doxology for all who read it with an open heart and a mind in subjection to Holy Scripture.

"Many of us owe more than we can say to the example and teaching of John Murray. He wrote nothing hurriedly and for the short term. These pages, as much as anything he prepared, take us to a most vital aspect of a true relationship with God.May they help another generation to be faithful servants of Christ!." - Iain Murray, Author of "The Life of John Murray"

"John Murray's booklet on the fear of God--a theme that desperately needs to be resurrected today--is the best short treatment of this subject anywhere in the English language. From his renowned opening sentence ('the fear of God is the soul of godliness'), to his emphasis on piety, and his careful exposition of the marks of the fear of God (a consciousness of the transcendent majesty and holiness of God, an all-pervasive sense of the presence of God, a dependence upon and responsibility to God, and a constant consciousness of relation to God), Murray's treatment is biblically balanced and nuanced. It confirms the need for obedience to God that is motivated by filial fear and underscores, as Murray says, that 'the eclipse of God, whether viewed as doctrine or as attitude, evidences the deterioration of faith in the living God.' Buy this booklet in bulk and give a copy to each of your friends. It can do them and the church immeasurable good." - Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids

"'Principles of Conduct' is Murray's masterpiece. It is as solid as Pike's Peak." James I. Packer

"Historically, and more importantly biblically, the fear of God has been regarded as essential to true devotion to God. But in recent years this foundational element of piety has been overlooked or even rejected as belonging to the era of the old covenant and not properly Christian (I actually read the latter sentiment in book by a popular North American author!) How welcome then to have John Murray's classic study of the fear of God available in this format. Read it and nourish your soul!" - Dr. Michael Haykin

"In his 'Principles of Conduct', Professor Murray's insights into Christian ethics are shaped by a careful integration of exegetical, biblical, systematic, and practical theology. The chapter on "The Fear of God," here published separately for the first time, is cut from the same cloth. Rightly seeing that the fear of the Lord is the first and most basic lesson in Christian ethics--the true beginning of godly wisdom and knowledge, Professor Murray conducts us into this inner sanctuary of the Christian life." - Dr. Robert Paul Martin

"'The fear of God is the soul of godliness.' These opening words of Professor Murray's chapter on this theme are like a bucket of ice water thrown into one's face in a day of cozy, comfortable, man-centered and casual Christianity. However they are true words. In this booklet Prof. Murray convincingly defines the fear of God and then demonstrates from the Old and New Testaments how central it is to any biblically framed experience of the Christian life. May God be pleased to use these pages to move many to rethink this central theme of the Word of God." - Pastor Albert N. Martin, Trinity Baptist Church, Montville, NJ

"The fear of God could be nothing less than the soul of rectitude. It is the apprehension of God's glory that constrains the fear of his name. It is that same glory that commands our totality commitment to him, totality trust and obedience. The fear of God is but the reflex in our consciousness of the transcendent perfection which alone could warrant and demand the totality of our commitment in love and devotion." - Professor John Murray

"Murray will be a reminder of what is ultimately important. He presents a needed distinction lacking in most presentations of the fear of God. A crippling, servile, always-looking-over-the-shoulder fear is unhealthy in the believer. We are God's sons and daughters; He loves us. Instead, we need a God-honoring, reverence of Him who produces the pursuit of, and the fruit of, godliness." - Dr. Mike Renihan

"With a wealth of biblical citations, Murray identifies the soul of godliness as a reverence for God as transcendently majestic and holy, constraining the forgiven sinner to adoration, love and obedience. Murray's writing on the subject is pervaded by the awe and filial devotion which he commends to us." - Dr. Sherman Isbell

"This work attempts to trace the footsteps of a great circumnavigator in the divine life, somewhat as an open boat might follow in the wake of the ships of Columbus into a new world. And yet it is not new, but as old as the grace of God in the heart of sinful man; and now, so many have crossed the sea, and prepared charts and maps of their passage for the use of others, that there is scarcely a league over which some compass has not been drawn, or into which some fathoming line has not been let down; though there is scenery still hidden, and there are depths never yet sounded, nor ever will be, inasmuch as the grace of God in the heart of man is unfathomable; and in sailing over this ocean we can often do no more than cry out with the apostle Paul, 'O the depths!' There is always much that is peculiar with every individual mind in crossing this sea; and likewise in following the traces of so experienced and wise a navigator as Bunyan every individual will find something new to remark upon; so that these lectures, though on an old subject, will not necessarily be found commonplace, or monotonous, or superfluous.

This excellent commentary on Pilgrim's Progress consists on 10 Lectures.

The first nine lectures cover Pilgrim's Progress: Part One, and the final lecture covers the journey of Christiana to the Celestial City.

These are spiritually enriching lectures that will not only help you appreciate Pilgrim's Progress, but also the Bible itself.

WOMEN SPEAKING IN THE CHURCH: What Does the Scripture Say?
Benjamin B. Warfield, Robert L. Dabney & Geoffrey Thomas

THIS SUBSTANTIAL BOOKLET IS ADDED FOR FREE FOR ALL WHO PURCHASE THE WARFIELD 9-PACK.

NOW AVAILABLE TO SHIP

Two classic pieces join together with a contemporary one to address an increasingly thorny issue facing the church. The first piece is a brief article by B.B. Warfield (1851-1921) which is an exposition of Paul's words to the Corinthians concerning women speaking in the church. He concludes with these words:

"The difference in conclusions between Paul and the feminist movement of today is rooted in a fundamental difference in their points of view relatively to the constitution of the human race. To Paul, the human race is made up of families, and every several organism, the church included, is composed of families, united together by this or that bond. The relation of the sexes in the family follows it therefore into the church. To the feminist movement the human race is made up of individuals; a woman is just another individual by the side of the man; and it can see no reason for any differences in dealing with the two. And, indeed, if we can ignore the great fundamental natural difference of sex, and destroy the great fundamental social unit of the family, in the interest of individualism, there does not seem any reason why we should not wipe out the differences established by Paul between the sexes in the church. Except, of course, the authority of Paul. It all, in the end, comes back to the authority of the apostles, as founders of the church. We may like what Paul says, or we may not like it. We may be willing to do what he commands, or we may not be willing to do it. But there is no room for doubt of what he says."

The second and longer piece was writtern by Robert Lewis Dabney (1820-1898) and first appeared in The Southern Presbyterian Review for October 1879. It begins with these words:

"In this day innovations march with rapid strides. The fantastic suggestion of yesterday, entertained only by a few fanatics, and then only mentioned by the sober to be ridiculed, is today the audacious reform, and will be tomorrow the recognized usage. Novelties are so numerous and so wild and rash, that in even conservative minds the sensibility of wonder is exhausted and the instinct of righteous resistance fatigued. A few years ago the public preaching of women was universally condemned among all conservative denominations of Christians, and, indeed, within their bounds, was totally unknown. Now the innovation is brought face to face even with the Southern churches, and female preachers are knocking at our doors."

The third piece was written (after being preached) by Pastor Geoffrey Thomas, who has retired after more than 50 years of ministry in the same church in Aberystwyth, Wales. Thomas speaks with the same message but does so in the 21st century, expounding and applying the word of the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 2:12-14. We are delighted to be able to add his wise words to make this booklet even more substantial.

THE CHURCH NEEDS THESE WORDS TODAY, AND NEEDS THEM DESPARATELY!

"When it comes to the late nineteenth century the names R. L. Dabney and B. B. Warfield are in a peculiar class--the foremost class of biblical theologians. Those familiar with their writings will not be surprised that they wrote on such a contemporary topic (then and now) as women and their role in the Church. They were acutely aware of cultural currents and pressures and offered incisive biblical-theological answers. The Church can only benefit from the abiding truths they mined from Holy Scripture. It's good to have their contributions in one volume. Readers beware: you may not like what you read in this little book, but you better not dismiss it!" -- C. N. Willborn, PhD

"This project is a must! Feminism and egalitarianism are insidious errors, striking at the heart of both home and church and probably society as well. Both God's creation ordinance and the character of the the church are affected. Warfield and Dabney deal with these matters biblically and powerfully. I cannot urge you strongly enough to get these two great works into print. You must do this!" - Pastor Don Lindblad

COVENANT THEOLOGY: A Reformed and Baptistic Perspective on God's Covenants
Greg Nichols

NEW PAPERBACK EDITION NOW AVAILABLE!

More than 30 years in the making, from Greg Nichols' class notes comes a new printing of a volume that has already helped those who are Reformed and Baptistic understand the vital subject of GOD'S COVENANTS from the perspective of those persuaded of Disciple's Baptism. A MUST READ!

This volume is the first of the Scriptural and Systematic Studies Series by Greg Nichols.

"Baptists who embrace their historic Calvinistic and Covenantal roots have long since needed a robust and comprehensive treatment of Covenant Theology that includes the nuanced interpretations of the biblical covenants that a baptistic hermeneutic requires. This treatment by Greg Nichols does just that and more. As a devotee of the Westminster tradition (including its chapter, 'On God's Covenant with Man'), I differ here and there; sometimes significantly so. But there is so much to applaud in this volume and Baptists will do well to read this volume carefully and with much gratitude. A splendid achievement. I, for one, will insist that my Presbyterian students read it." - Derek W. H. Thomas, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology, RTS, Minister of Preaching and Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, SC, Editorial Director, Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals

"There has been an urgent need for Reformed Baptist to produce a work on the covenants. I am so thankful that Greg Nichols has engaged this very weighty work. It is a very timely addition on a vitally important topic and adds much to a growing Reformed Baptist literary body." - James R. White, Alpha and Omega Ministry, author of numerous books, including 'Pulpit Crimes', published by Solid Ground

"Greg Nichols has done a wonderful job of articulating a genuinely reformed and baptistic model of covenant theology. The fruit of decades of study and teaching on his subject, this volume should be read by all who want to understand the proper framework of divine revelation. My counsel to all ministerial students is 'Tolle lege' (take up and read)." - Dr. Robert P. Martin, Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle, WA, Author of "Guide to the Puritans"

"The Old Testament was inspired by the Spirit of God. It is certainly a record of what is true, of creation, fall, and the promise of the Messiah. There is the whole machinery of redemptive anticipation that God set up with his old covenant people. What of family life? What of the children of believers? Their sons are no longer to be circumcised. What is the status of the sons and daughters of believers under the new covenant? Such questions are fascinating and Baptists are asking them and seeking answers. Hence the appearance of this book which comes out of many years of thought and preparation by Greg Nichols and has been eagerly anticipated by the gospel church. May it do much good. May we all look again at the Scriptures and find a new help in understanding them in this satisfying and provocative volume." - Geoff Thomas, Pastor of Alfred Place Baptist Church in Aberystwyth, Wales

"I remember the very first class that I took from Pastor Nichols which was on the Doctrine of the Covenants and thinking to myself, 'This material has utterly transformed the way that I look at the Bible.' Until that point, I had never been taught covenant theology and so the effect of this biblical teaching on my life was nothing short of profound! Four thoughts come to mind as I think about this new book: thoroughly scriptural, historically confessional, warmly pastoral and experientially practical. My prayer is that the publication of this work will be that which our great God uses to edify His church and to get much glory to His own holy Name." - Pastor Rob Ventura, Grace Community Baptist Church, North Providence, RI, Co-Author of "Portrait of Paul"

"As a former student of Greg's in the Trinity Ministerial Academy, I cannot say enough good about his lectures in systematic theology. In addition to playing a primary role in shaping my ministry, they have had a significant impact upon me personally. His lectures on Doctrine of the Covenants are among my favorites. I am not aware of anything in print that treats this topic as clearly and comprehensively, and from a distinctly Baptist perspective. Greg's emphasis throughout is biblical, pastoral, and practical, with a contemporary flavor." - Pastor Jim Domm, Englewood Baptist Church, Englewood NJ

"Pastor Greg Nichols' lectures on the Biblical Covenants is a breath of fresh air among a smog of other materials available on the same subject. Presented in a plain and readily understandable way, it has revolutionized my thinking and approach to understanding God's dealing with mankind. Next to a grasp of Biblical Calvinism, nothing has opened up my understanding more to the Word of God than this. It has enabled me to see the true unity that does exist in both the Old and New Testaments while at the same time enabling me to understand the differences. These lectures offer a Biblical alternative to the serious Bible student without feeling they must be either Pedo-Baptist or Dispensational in their approach to the scriptures. With nothing like them in print available, it would be a great asset to the Church of Jesus Christ to have these available in printed form." - Pastor Martin Hoffman, Providence Baptist Church, Lecanto, FL.

"Greg Nichols' approach to theology is rooted in his commitment to the Word of God. He has always desired to allow the bible to speak and to sit under its revelation. Over the years I have had both the joy and the privilege to sit through his teaching on various aspects of Systematic Theology and benefited greatly from it. I can heartily recommend his writings to you, it will take you back to your bible, deepen your understanding of God's Holy Word and draw your closer to the Lord." - Pastor Robert Briggs, Immanuel Baptist Church, Sacramento, CA

"During the early 1980's when I was training for the Christian ministry, it was my privilege to sit under the teaching of Pastor Greg Nichols for a significant portion of my class-work. His instruction exerted a formative influence in opening up the entire Bible to me. His material on the covenants for example, was so insightful in unveiling the framework of redemption. Reformed Baptists would benefit by having Pastor Nichols' material in print. It would help our churches to better understand our faith and better pass it on to the next generation." - Pastor Stu Johnston, Grace Reformed Baptist Church of Mebane, NC

"One of the benefits of being under the theological teachings of Greg Nichols is being able to enthusiastically recommend his lectures. His lessons enrich the soul of the Christian, extract beautiful principals from Biblical texts that fix themselves in the heart and make them unforgettable. Based on my understanding of Christ and His Word, and my Christian experience I recommend availing yourself of the theological teachings of Greg Nichols." - Pastor Oscar Arocha, Pastor, Bautista de la Gracia, Santiago, Dominican Republic

MOODY CLASSICS
Augustine, Bounds, Bunyan, Ryle, Meyer, Muller, Stone

We are offering the following 8 Classics from Moody Press. You can order any of these titles or all of them for a deeper discount. GREAT FOR A GIFT TO A NEW CHRISTIAN, OR A CHURCH OR SCHOOL LIBRARY.

(1) POWER THROUGH PRAYER by E.M. Bounds

Pastor and civil war chaplain E. M. Bounds penned his slim classic on prayer for the simple reason that Christians don't pray enough. "The little estimate we put on prayer is evident from the little time we give to it," he wrote. "Talking to men for God is a great thing, but talking to God for men is greater still."

(2) THE CONFESSIONS OF ST. AUGUSTINE

That Augustine was one of the greatest minds who has ever been in the church is a given, and his most well-known work, the Confessions, has a unique place among the world's great classics. The line that appears in the opening paragraph of Book 1, "our heart is restless till it rest in thee," is quoted everywhere, though not everyone who quotes it or hears it knows where it came from and may even think it's a biblical saying.

(3) THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS by John Bunyan

Join Christian and his companions on their journey to the Celestial City, as they pass through many experiences common to us all, in Bunyan's timeless allegory of the Christian's walk with God.

(4) HOLINESS: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties and Roots by J.C. Ryle

J.C. Ryle's Holiness has imparted a standing challenge to Christians for 130 years. In this new, slimmed-down series of excerpts from Ryle's masterwork, we aim to present his original message to a whole new generation. Holiness, Ryle argued, was not simply a matter of believing and feeling, but of doing.

(5) THE SECRET OF GUIDANCE by F.B. Meyer

F. B. Meyer writes, "The grace of purity and self-control, of fervent prayer and understanding in the Scriptures, of love for men and zeal for God, of lowliness and meekness, of gentleness and goodness - all is in Christ; and if Christ is in us, all is ours also."

(6) ANSWERS TO PRAYER by George Muller

Prayer was the vital component of George Mueller's nineteenth-century ministry to England's orphans. Through his narrative account, Mueller reveals how powerful and spiritually rewarding prayer can be in your life.

(7) NAMES OF GOD by Nathan Stone

Nathan J. Stone writes, "Indeed we cannot say all that the mysterious word God means to us until we know more about Him." God's many names reveal not only different dimensions of His character but also point to their fulfillment in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. This insightful little book accurately and clearly works through the many names of God throughout the Old Testament. We can now see God in new lights and angles as we learn of His justice, His unbounded love, His preeminence, and His character - all through His names. This book has sold over 400,000 copies.

THE THEOLOGY OF THE REFORMATION
Benjamin B. Warfield

In 1917, at the 400th anniversary of the Reformation, Benjamin B. Warfield wrote this outstanding article which appeared in The Biblical Review which was published by The Biblical Seminary in New York. Here Warfield set forth, as only he could, the true Heart of the Reformation. In opposition to many in his day who were seeking to find the genius and the genesis of the Reformation in something other than theology, Warfield wrote: "The Reformation was then - we insist upon it - precisely the substitution of one set of theological doctrines for another. That is what it was to Luther; and that is what, through Luther, it has been to the Christian world. Exactly what Luther did was for himself - for the quieting of his aroused conscience and the healing of his deepened sense of sin - to rediscover the great fact, the greatest of all the great facts of which sinful man can ever become aware, that salvation is by the pure grace of God alone."

"Like his younger colleague at 'Old Princeton,' J. Gresham Machen, Warfield believed that the Christian faith is capable of scholarly defense. In this study, Warfield takes on fallacious, dismissive views of the Reformation set forth by the foremost historian of the early twentieth century, Charles Beard. Warfield shows what the Reformation was at its heart, and how its doctrines alone account for its astonishing power and its manifold effects as a movement in history. And he does so thoroughly armed with forceful arguments and substantial evidence, in a style unsurpassed for sanity, clarity, and more than a bit of scintillating dash. Recommended reading for all Reformed Christians!" - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"B B Warfield was a remarkable Christian author, equally at home in Church History and systematic theology as biblical studies. He is remembered today primarily for his robust theology of biblical inerrancy, but there are many other reasons to remember him. In particular, in this quincentennial of the Reformation, Warfield's cogent reflections on theásignificance of the Reformation are important documents to read. Very glad to see these texts back in circulation!" - Dr. Michael Haykin, Professor of Church Histroy, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

Sam Waldron wrote: "One of my sons is named after Benjamin Breckenridge Warfield. áso you might guess that I love his stuff.á Over the years and especially in my early years he became my teacher on many, many issues.á Even on the rare occasion when I disagree with him, he remains so very helpful and informative.á I welcome the publication of these works by Solid Ground."

This new booklet is the first of a new series entitled SGCB REFORMATION 500 which will introduce vitally important works to the church and the world as we approach the 500th anniversary of Luther's act of naling the 95 Theses to the Church Door at Wittenburg.

Our other soon-to-be-released work is called THE NINETY-FIVE THESES IN THEIR THEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE by Warfield.

Endorsements

“William Spurstowe is finally getting some of the recognition that his writings deserve. A pious Presbyterian willing to suffer for his convictions, Spurstowe exhibits in these pages a pleasing sense of humor mixed with a biblical and practical piety. The subject is treated with utmost seriousness, the author with a touch of self-deprecation. Graced with an informative introduction, this carefully edited reprint will bless Christians who wish to better understand the greatness, preciousness, usefulness, and Spirit-worked effects of God’s promises to believers.” —Chad Van Dixhoorn, professor of Church History and Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte.

About the Author

William Spurstowe (1605–1666) was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. His first pastorate was at Great Hampden in Buckinghamshire, where he was installed in 1638. In 1643 Spurstowe was chosen to attend the Westminster Assembly as a Presbyterian. Spurstowe served the parliament of Richard Cromwell alongside Edward Reynolds, Thomas Manton, and other Puritan ministers. He was also one of the ejected ministers of 1662.

SEEKING GOD: Do You Really Want To Know God?
Peter Jeffery

NOW AVAILABLE ONCE AGAIN.

SEEKING GOD by Peter Jeffery is one of the most powerful evangelistic tools ever written. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is presented in a simple and clear manner that will leave the reader with no excuse.

Thousands of copies have circled the globe and touched and changed untold lives. Eternity alone will reveal all that the Lord has accomplished through this precious booklet.

"We have used Peter Jeffrey's 'Seeking God' for many years to show unbelievers of all ages how to 'seek the Lord while He may be found'. It has proved most effective in special Sunday School classes, as a popular item on our tract rack with visitors and in believers' personal distribution to their friends. Seeking God shows you how to seek God, cautions you how NOT to seek God and encourages you as to why it all matters. Unlike so much fluff today, this is older, wiser, biblical counsel from a veteran 'obstetrician of souls.'" - Steve Martin, Former Executive Director of ARBCA

"It is refreshing to read a booklet which contains the heart and soul of the gospel. Each page is a gem" - Christian Herald

THE FIVE POINTS OF CALVINISM
Robert L. Dabney

"The most conspicuous figure and the leading theological guide of the Southern Presbyterian Church, the most prolific theological writer that Church has as yet produced, and for a period of over forty years one of the most distinguished and probably the most impressive teacher of its candidates for the ministry." - B.B. Warfield

"The best teacher of theology in the United States, if not the world. " - A.A. Hodge

"R.L. Dabney was one of the nineteenth century's greatest theologians, in fact one of the top Reformed theologians of all time. His work is invariably exegetical and precise. I am very thankful to the folk at Solid Ground Christian Books for making Dabney's 'Five

Points of Calvinism' available. The book will prove useful for the explanation and defense of these foundational doctrines of grace." Joseph A. Pipa, Jr., Ph.D. President of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

"Dabney was a towering figure in the 19th century American theological world. His exposition of the five points of Calvinism will enrich the reader's appreciation for the doctrines of grace, the glory of the Gospel, the accomplishment of the work of Christ and the security of the believer." - Ligon Duncan

"Dabney has been described as representing a moderate Calvinism. That does not mean, however, he was a man with little or no convictions. The Five Points of Calvinism is a good introduction to Dabney in 'moderation' and a better place for the novice to be trained in basic Calvinism. Abounding with Scripture and logical argumentation, this is another 'old book' that's useful for the Church today." - Dr. C.N. Willborn

"The object of this tract is simply to enable all honest inquirers after truth to understand just what those doctrines really are which people style the peculiar "doctrines of Presbyterians," and thus to enable honest minds to answer all objections and perversions. I do not write because of any lack in our church of existing treatises well adapted to our purpose; nor because I think anyone can now add anything really new to the argument. But our pastors and missionaries think that some additional good may come from another short discussion suitable for unprofessional readers.." - from the Author

Here is a cogent defense of Calvinism by Robert Lewis Dabney against the charge of the Arminian thought that the doctrine of eternal security promotes "unholy living".

Robert Lewis Dabney (March 5, 1820 - January 3, 1898) was known as one of the greatest Southern Presbyterian theologians of the nineteenth century. During the American Civil War, Dabney first served as as a Chaplain 18th Virginia Calvary Regiment he later served as a Chief of Staff to General Stonewall Jackson.

From 1853 to 1859 he was professor of Ecclesiastical History and then served from adjunct professor of Systematic Theology from 1859 to 1869 at Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, VA. While serving as one of the first faculty members at the University of Texas in Austin, as a Professor of Mental and Moral philosophy, Dabney and R. K. Smoot, founded and maintained the Austin School of Theology (now known as Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary).

In 1870 Dabney became the moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC IN PUBLIC WORSHIP
John Girardeau with Introduction by R.L. Dabney

"It is often forgotten that the use of musical instruments in the church's worship is a comparatively recent development among Presbyterians and Baptists, and that it was opposed by Calvin, the Westminster Assembly, Owen and the other Puritans, Gill and Spurgeon, as being out of accord with the simplicity of gospel worship under the new covenant. Girardeau's book is a standard defense of the Puritan view, examining the grounds for discerning what is carried over from the Old Testament and what is not." - Sherman Isbell

The book opens with the following Statement of the Question:

"In the discussion of the question, Whether the use of instrumental music in the worship of the church is permissible or not, it must be premised:

First, that the question is not in regard to private or family worship, or to that of social gatherings which are not ecclesiastical in their nature, nor with reference to the utility or tastefulness of instrumental music, nor in relation to the abuse to which it may be liable; but,

Secondly, the question is precisely, Is the use of instrumental music in the public worship of the church justifiable? The design of this discussion is, with the help of the divine Spirit, to prove the negative."

In the Introduction to this new edition of Girardeau's classic R.L. Dabney states:

"The author in his eloquent conclusion anticipates that some will meet his arguments with sneers rather than serious discussion, which he proposes to endure with Christian composure. It is a reproach to our church, which fills us with grief, to find this prediction fulfilled in some quarters. Surely persons calling themselves Presbyterians should remember that the truths they profess to hold sacred have usually been in small minorities sneered at by the arrogant majorities. So it was in the days of the Reformers, of Athanasius, of the Apostles, and of Jesus himself."

WILLIAM CAREY And the Greatest Generation
Jerry Slate

A BRAND NEW TITLE BY A PASTOR IN GEORGIA WHO HAS A BURDEN FOR MISSIONS.

"The story of William Carey is iconic for western missions. And while the story has been told many times, this re-telling by Pastor Slate has historical precision and well-honed application. A fabulous introduction to what Slate calls, and this author concurs, 'THE GREATEST GENERATION.'" - Michael A.G. Haykin

"The Lord's ways are marvelous! The inspiring story of William Carey and the Particular Baptist Mission Society glorifies our God. This account by Pastor Jerry Slate will encourage and challenge you. Read it, and then pray for missions. Pray for men to be sent. Pray for the extension of Christ's Kingdom." -James M. Renihan

"Having read many accounts of the life of William Carey and how God so powerfully used this Father of Modern Missions, I was dubious that any untried angle remained for another telling. But I was delightfully surprised by Slate’s recounting of this missionary hero. I commend it to you whether you come to it very familiar with Carey’s story or are learning about it for the first time. May God use it to raise up more men like Carey, more missionaries like the Serampore trio, and more missions senders like the London trio." - M. David Sills, D. Miss., Ph.D.

CHAINS OF GRACE: Peter Jeffery's Story
Peter Jeffery

Chains of grace, the story of Peter Jeffery, is an engaging and insightful account of how God took an ordinary man (who had little knowledge of the Bible) and converted him, even though the very day he was converted, he vowed these words: 'I will never become a Christian!' Commencing his ministry in Wales, he faced challenges and difficulties in his pastorate, but learnt to trust God in all circumstances. His faithful preaching of the Bible led to many people having their lives transformed, and the knock-on effect of God's grace was often like the links of a chain, with one conversion leading to another. Peter's ministry took him to many different parts of the world, including Australia and North America. His writings have been translated into various languages, and he has over forty books in print.

Enjoy reading all about how God took an ordinary man and used him as an instrument to build his church!

"Spirit-anointed preachers who are simple, clear, biblically faithful and who aim at conversion is the need of the hour. May our God raise up many more men with Peter's gifts and graces to herald the mercies of Peter's Savior." - Pastor Steve Martin

"I commend this easy-to-read journey of a man who found Jesus Christ and wants to tell others about him. Peter Jeffery has done that and still is doing it through this book and others. Thrown into the bargain are real questions on true preaching, what it is, and true conversions which are clearly and simply answered and explained." - Neville Rees is a retired pastor, Morriston, Swansea, Wales

FRIENDS OF SOLID GROUND CHRISTIAN BOOKS
YOUNG MEN: Faults & Ideals, Includes a Seven Day Guide and Commentary for Young Men
J.R. Miller with Ray Rhodes, Jr.

Young Men: Faults and Ideals by J.R. Miller. This classic book for young men age 10 to 29 has been updated with commentary added and a study guide by Ray Rhodes. How can a young man cultivate godly courage? What should be the goals of a young man? ...a trumpet's call to father's, grandfathers and others. Miller was one of the most gifted and godly men of his generation. A trusted ally in the battle for the hearts and minds of young men.

"This book is a trumpet call to fathers, grandfathers and others whose duties involve mentoring, teaching and training of boys. When the watchmen standing post on the walls of ancient Jerusalem blew the trumpet, it spurred the men out of their slumber into decisive action. Men drew their swords, ready to repel the invader and turn back the marauder. Our adversary is equally as ravenous and his methods as insidious. Let this book be a trumpet's blast to us. We are battling for our homes and families, our sons and daughters, wives and loved ones. I pray that as you read this text you will be as I was--goaded out of my complacency and challenged to wade back into the fray." - Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Jarrard, USMCR Commandant of Cadets, Riverside Military Academy

PREACHING WITH BIBLICAL PASSION: A Scriptural and Historical Study
Gabriel Grossi

"Mr. Grossi's book is a timely call to return to biblical, Spirit-anointed preaching, akin to what the Puritans called 'plain preaching.' Such preaching does justice to the glory of God, the centrality of Christ, and the saving ministry of the Holy Spirit, the depravity of man, and the invitations of the Gospel! Tolle Lege! (Take up and Read!)" - Dr. Joel Beeke

BO MEETS A HERO: A Wounded Army Vet Joins with Bo, the Three-Legged Dog, to Teach Children Invaluable Lessons
Sharman Martin, with Photographs by Karim Shamsi-Basha

Follow the adventures of Bo, a real-life, three-legged dog who lost his right leg in a terrible accident, but who persevered and won the heart of his new owner and the author of the book. Although this is written for young children, parents and teachers will find this story tugging at their hearts, as they see the value and integrity of all creatures of our God and King.

In this second BO BOOK Bo meets a real-life hero from the Iraq War, Noah Galloway who lost an arm and leg while serving his country. Noah has persevered to become a national hero to thousands who have heard him speak about overcoming disabilities. One purpose of the book is to share how one can overcome trials that are sent as a test from the Lord.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Noah Galloway has recently been featured on the TV show DANCING WITH THE STARS and has been overwhelming people with his story of courage. Please pray for Noah as doors continue to fly open all over the country, and as he begins to speak about this book. Pray for him as he will be facing new challenges even more dangerous than what he faced in Iraq.

A PRAYER FOR ALL IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honor and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
