CLASSIC REFORMED DISCOURSES AND ESSAYS
J.H. Merle D'Aubigne

Seventeen classic Reformed essays, discourses and homilies by the brilliant and godly Swiss Reformed Pastor-historian. Such topics as the following are included:

-The Character Essential to the Theologian, and to Christians in General

-Lutheranism & Calvinism: Diversity Essential to their Unity

-The Study of the History of Christianity and its Usefulness in the Present Day

-Geneva and Oxford

-The Voice of the Ancients to the Men of the 19th Century

-Family Worship

-The Church Called to Confess Jesus Christ

-The Cross of Jesus Christ

-The Publication of the Gospel

-The Service of Jesus Christ

and seven more

"D'Aubigne was one of a group of men that came to evangelical faith under the ministry of Robert Haldane in Geneva. Merle D'Aubigne devoted himself to the kind of edifying and Gospel defending ministry that he had observed in Haldane. His writing breathes sincerity and truth; his defense of the gospel is profound and erudite; his love for its defenders is infectious. The articles in this volume are sure to bring glory to God and true spiritual pleasure to his saints." - Tom J. Nettles

"The Christian writing of J.H. Merle D'Aubigne, one of the most important Reformed historians of the last century, was the product of le reveil in Francophone Switzerland and southern France. As such, it combines the passion of revival with solidly Reformed thinking; always a fabulous combination. This rare collection of papers and sermons is highly recommended." - Michael Haykin

J.H. Merle D'Aubigne (1794-1872) was a pastor, court preacher, and church historian. He is, perhaps, best known for his multi-volume History of the Reformation.

THE HISTORY OF PROTESTANTISM: A Glorious Record of the Grand Drama of Revived Christianity (3 Volume Set)
James A. Wylie

THIS THREE VOLUME SET CONTAINS HUNDREDS OF GRAPHICALLY POWERFUL ILLUSTRATIONS.

This Large Three Volume set, 'The History of Protestantism' by J. A. Wylie, is an incredibly inspiring work. It pulls back the divine curtain and reveals God's hand in the affairs of His church during the Protestant Reformation. Through the centuries, the sacrifices and victories of God's faithful people have often been obscured and forgotten. Now once again, you can read the fascinating story of how truth triumphed over error, principle over falsehood, and light over darkness. Your heart will be stirred by the lives of Protestant heroes, and your mind captivated by God's simple means to counteract the intrigues of its enemies in both church and state. Though this book reads like you are right there, it often lets you watch from heaven's perspective, and opens to your mind to the highest thoughts and feelings. You will sense the unfolding drama as told in the lives and work of God fearing and courageous men and women.

"This set of books about our forgotten heritage will fascinate readers and strengthen faith. James Aitken Wylie (1808-1890) tells the story of the Reformation with detail and vigor. 'The History of Protestantism' draws you in with accounts of faithful preaching, martyrdom, revival, war, and liberty from Wycliffe to William of Orange." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"A right view of the present and the future requires a reflective look back to the people and key events of yesteryear. The past gives us a framework for interpreting our present situation and the wisdom to plan for the future. Read the Bible! Read Biography! Read Church History! And, may I suggest, read Wylie's History of Protestantism! In these three volumes you will not only learn the history of the Protestantism but you will also become well acquainted with the theology of Protestantism. Thank you Solid Ground for 'uncovering' another 'buried treasure.' - Ray Rhodes, President of 'Nourished in the Word Ministries' and author of seven books including three Family Worship titles published by SGCB

ENDORSEMENTS

“There are times when actions matter most. There are even times when your mere presence matters most. But as Marshall and Newheiser make clear, our lives are filled with times ‘when words matter most.’ This book is for those times. Written by women and for women, these pages are so saturated with Scripture and biblical wisdom that they can be equally beneficial to men. When Words Matter Most can serve either for small-group study or personal reading. Most of us speak to one or more who are weary, wayward, or worried almost every day. Learning from the lessons and examples of this book will prepare you to be more effective when you do.” -Donald S. Whitney, Professor of Biblical Spirituality and Associate Dean, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Family Worship; Praying the Bible; and Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life

“When Words Matter Most is a thoroughly practical and biblical book to help you speak the truth in love to others caught up in a variety of struggles. This book is engaging and very helpful. I highly recommend it.” -Martha Peace, biblical counselor; author, The Excellent Wife

“We need each other to grow in Christ. We also need to hear God's word, and God uses others to speak that word to us. Marshall and Newheiser remind us of this fundamental but often ignored truth in this wonderfully practical book. We are all needy and weak. We all need to be encouraged and challenged, and we need to hear God’s word practically applied to our lives by those who know us. We are confident that the Lord will use this book to help us walk worthily of the Lord who has called us to be like him.” -Thomas and Diane Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; and his wife, Diane

“The riches of God’s word should not be hoarded as a private treasure. This practical, powerful book challenges believers to allow Scripture’s healing balm to flow naturally into our relationships and conversations. God’s words matter more and accomplish more than our own. When the teaching of the Bible permeates our own thoughts, we can gently and powerfully share strengthening truth with one another.” -Deborah Young, Chief Curriculum Officer, Bible Study Fellowship

“From the very beginning, God created mankind with the ability to communicate so man could commune with God and fellow man. However, because of sin, communication has been horribly corrupted. Cheryl Marshall and Caroline Newheiser have written a much-needed book to help restore gracious and loving communication to bring strength, comfort, and sometimes reproof to those who need it. Gracious speech full of truth is a lost art to this generation. When Words Matter Most is a carefully written resource to restore this vital and necessary practice.” -John D. Street, Professor, The Master’s University and Seminary; President, Association of Certified Biblical Counselors

“What a challenge it is to speak the truth in love to those whom the Lord places in our lives. It is much easier to just talk about comfortable topics and avoid the tough ones altogether. When Words Matter Most serves as a welcome tool to show us how to do the right thing and choose the words that matter most with utmost prayer and care. Marshall and Newheiser skillfully provide biblically saturated advice coupled with real-life examples from their vast experience. They do not seek to provide a formula for success, but rather carefully suggest methods to encourage the fainthearted and do so with grace. It is exciting to think about how the Lord may choose to use conversations we may be privileged to initiate to transform hearts and bring glory to his name. May we be eager for the task! This helpful book will spur us on in ways yet unseen with its well-organized categories of concern and corresponding biblical truth. I am grateful to both Marshall and Newheiser for this labor of love and gladly recommend it.” -Mary K. Mohler, Director, Seminary Wives Institute, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Growing in Gratitude

THE COLLECTED WORKS OF J.C. RYLE
JOHN CHARLES RYLE

This J.C Ryle 12 volume cloth-bound set from Banner of Truth is an incredible resource not only for pastors but also for those who want to grow in spiritual maturity. Ryle is very practical and easy to read. He writes in a way in which you are confronted with the truth about your sin and yet also reminded of the comforts of the gospel. I have given some small reviews of each book below. As I have mentioned in other posts before, the quality of these cloth-bound books is amazing! They will last a lifetime even if you use them heavily. You can buy these books separately or as a complete set.

In 1837, John Charles Ryle was an outstanding athlete, excelling in cricket and rowing. But, when he became ill with a serious infection, he turned to his long-forgotten Bible and prayed. Then, one Sunday at church, he felt as though God was speaking to him, emphasizing the message that people are saved by grace through faith, which is a gift from God. Ryle ultimately entered the ministry in the Church of England, while also publishing popular tracts and books from a Biblical standpoint. J.C. Ryle’s Holiness is perhaps his best known book, describing the nature of holiness and the challenges of temptation, while Call to Prayer shares with readers the privileges of private prayer. J.C. Ryle’s Thoughts for Young Men offers up what one reviewer calls “true Puritan theology,” while Agency That Transformed a Nation shares timeless lessons gleaned from the 18-century Great Awakening.

EXPOSITORY THOUGHTS ON THE GOSPELS

For anyone studying or preaching on the Gospels, this has to be one of your go-to sets. Ryle’s commentary is very pastoral and full of practical application. Each section is laid out with the Scripture text, Ryle's pastoral commentary, and then his verse commentary. I normally tend to use exegetical, verse by verse commentaries in my sermon prep, which has led to my preaching being somewhat of a running commentary (which is not good). These pastoral commentaries by Ryle have provided balance in my study and sermon prep.

"J. C.Ryle's 'Expository Thoughts on the Gospels' gleans practical thoughts from every section of the four Gospels. I know of no set of books that is more helpful for private devotions and family worship. We read through Ryle's books when our children were in elementary school. A ten-year-old can understand Ryle, and an eighty-year-old saint is not beyond him; Ryle models simplicity and profundity to all. Ryle's thoughts are also invaluable for ministers and teachers, as they model how to glean applications from the text. Here is practical Christianity at its best." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids

This is Bishop Ryle at his very best!

HOLINESS

I believe it is important to go back and read classic Christian works such as Holiness to be reminded that the struggles that we are facing in our own lives and in the church are not new. For Christians, it has always been a struggle to live holy lives. Ryle’s Holiness helps us to be reminded that even though it's hard and may not be the most popular thing, we must be holy, because the voice of God in Scripture plainly commands it, it is one grand end and purpose for which Christ came into the world, because this is the only sound evidence that we have a saving faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, because this is the only proof that we love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity, because this is the only sound evidence that we are true children of God, because this is the most likely way to do good to others, because our present comfort depends much upon it, because without holiness on earth we will never be prepared to enjoy heaven.

CHARGES AND ADDRESSES: Delivered from 1881 to 1900

The Charges and Addresses here brought together show how he laboured to educate the clergy of his diocese in biblical principles and to impress upon them the vast importance of maintaining evangelical doctrine and practice in their varied ministries and contacts.

In England Ryle stands in the foremost rank of those who have held forth the word of life and fought the good fight of faith. He is one of the Lord’s standard-bearers of the late Victorian age. The ‘healthful spirit of God’s grace’ was upon him. Being dead he continues to speak to our backslidden generation.

THE UPPER ROOM: Being a Few Truths for the Times

‘I have reached an age when I cannot reasonably expect to write much more. There are many thoughts in this volume which I do not wish to leave behind me in the precarious form of separate single sermons, addresses, lectures, and tracts. I have therefore resolved to gather them together in the volume I now send forth, which I heartily pray God to bless, and to make it a permanent blessing to many souls.’ — J. C. RYLE

KNOTS UNTIED

This work by Ryle is on how the church should operate. It includes 19 papers on specific subjects relating to the evangelical church practices. Keep in mind when Ryle uses the word evangelical, he means Biblical, unlike the way we tend to think and use the word today. He lays out the beliefs held by Evangelical Churchmen of the day. His arguments are filled with Scriptural proof and explained very carefully and confidently. Some topics include Baptism, Regeneration, The Lord’s Supper, Confession, the Fallibility of Ministers, Idolatry, etc.

Let us always beware of any teaching which either directly or indirectly obscures justification by faith. All religious systems which put anything between the heavy laden sinner and Jesus Christ the Savior, except simple faith, are dangerous and unscriptural. All systems which make out faith to be anything complicated, anything but a simple, childlike dependence — the hand which receives the soul’s medicine from the physician — are unsafe and poisonous systems. All systems which cast discredit on the simple Protestant doctrine which broke the power of Rome, carry about with them a plague-spot, and are dangerous to souls.

Let us remember, not least, the enormous injury we may do to souls if we once allow ourselves to depart in the least degree from the simplicity of the gospel, either in our doctrine or in our worship. Who can estimate the shipwrecks that might occur in a single night, and the lives that might be lost, if a light-house keeper dared to alter but a little the color of his light? Who can estimate the deaths that might take place in a town if the chemist took on himself to depart but a little from the doctor’s prescriptions? Who can estimate the wholesale misery that might be caused in a war, by maps a little wrong, and charts a little incorrect? Who can estimate these things? Then perhaps you may have some idea of the spiritual harm that ministers do by departing in the slightest degree from the Scriptural proportions of the gospel, or by trying to catch the world by dressing the simple old Evangelical faith in new clothes.

CHRISTIAN LEADERS OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY

Although much has been written on the evangelical revival of the 18th century, J. C. Ryle’s Christian Leaders of the 18th Century remains the best popular introduction to this great spiritual era. With simplicity and vigour, he traces the lives of the eleven Christian leaders who ‘shook England from one end to another’, giving strong reasons for his belief ‘that excepting Luther and his Continental contemporaries, and our own martyred Reformers, the world has seen no such men since the days of the apostles.’

But Ryle does not write to prompt admiration, and his conclusions and applications of his subject are among the most forceful that ever came from his pen. ‘I am obliged to say plainly that, in my judgment, we have among us neither the men nor the doctrines of the days gone by…Once let the evangelical ministry return to the ways of the 18th century, and I firmly believe we should have as much success as before. We are where we are, because we have come short of our fathers.’

At the beginning of last century, Canon A. M. W. Christopher of St. Aldate’s, Oxford, declared that he had turned to Ryle’s book during every summer vacation for thirty years. It is time Christian Leaders of the 18th Century was so read again.

O SACRED HEAD, NOW WOUNDED: A Daily Liturgy from Pascha to Pentecost
JONATHAN GIBSON, Author of 'Be Thou My Vision: A Liturgy for Daily Worship'

A 48-Day Devotional Liturgy for Remembering Jesus from Pascha to Pentecost

God’s offer of eternal life through his work on the cross remains the greatest gift the world has known. But contrary to its importance, Holy Week always seems to pass by quickly and be associated with habitual practices that elicit little reflection. As a result, it can be challenging for Christians to establish routines for meditation on Christ’s redemptive life, death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and Pentecost.

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded by Jonathan Gibson presents a 48-day devotional liturgy to help readers effectively prepare their hearts from Pascha to Pentecost. Following the same format as Be Thou My Vision, each daily reading includes applicable Scripture readings, hymns, prayers, creeds, and prompts for petition and confession to enrich personal meditation and family worship. This devotional will help individuals and families establish a posture of remembrance and gratitude as they reflect on what Christ has done for us through his temptations, life, trial, passion, death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and Pentecost.

ENDORSEMENTS

“C. S. Lewis once expressed his view that modern worshipers who no longer used the church’s liturgy were guilty of spiritual arrogance—the only reason for ignoring it being the assumption that we can do things better. What would the blunt-speaking Lewis say about corporate worship today? And no doubt the character of communal worship is inevitably reflected in the private devotions of Christians. So where can we find help? In O Sacred Head, Now Wounded, Jonny Gibson once again comes alongside us with another splendid volume to guide our personal disciplines, inform our spiritual meditations, and nurture and nourish our private devotions. In addition, he enables us to grow into a biblical appreciation of the fact that, while Paul, Apollos, and Peter are ours, so too is the ministry of the historic and worldwide family of God.” —Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries

“A good liturgy is like a window rather than a wall, inviting worshipers to look through it and behold the glory and goodness of God. The devotional liturgies in O Sacred Head, Now Wounded welcome us to see the Redeemer with clear vision and renewed affections. Jonny Gibson has done it again—focusing on how the heart of the gospel vividly reveals the heart of God toward his people.” —Matt Boswell, hymn writer; Pastor, The Trails Church, Celina, Texas; Assistant Professor of Church Music and Worship, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“The most obvious virtue of O Sacred Head, Now Wounded is its comprehensiveness. It brings together passages from the Bible, the creeds and catechisms of the church, readings from the great Christians through the ages, and an abundance of liturgical materials. This abundance is firmly organized and meets the all-important criterion of being well thought out.” —Leland Ryken, author, Poetry of Redemption: An Illustrated Treasury of Good Friday and Easter Poems

“Jonny Gibson offers a disciplined structure for spiritual devotion rooted in ancient and Reformed Christianity. He has composed a daily rhythm of meditation and prayer, drawing from the Holy Scriptures, the creeds, the Heidelberg Catechism, the Westminster Shorter Catechism, the church fathers and Reformed theologians, Reformed liturgies, and the Psalter. Though designed to prepare a Christian for the annual remembrance of Christ’s death and resurrection in the traditional church calendar, these devotions could be used at any time of the year, for our Lord’s redeeming work should always be at the forefront of our minds.” —Joel R. Beeke, Professor of Homiletics and Systematic Theology, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

“Jonny Gibson’s liturgy for daily worship equips the reader to remember Jesus Christ in, as he puts it, an orderly, mystery-evoking, and worshipful way. I loved the content, structure, and rhythms of this book because they pointed me to the wonder of Jesus’s work of salvation and daily prepared my heart for the season from Pascha to Pentecost. It reminded me that form and liturgy can provide a beautiful framework for the personal and family worship of our Lord and Savior Jesus.” —Jenny Salt, Associate to Archdeacon of Women’s Ministry, Sydney Anglican Diocese; Host, Salt—Conversations with Jenny

“To some people, the word liturgy conjures up visions of dry-as-dust formal religion devoid of life and warmth. The irony is that evangelical informality, by which we often seem to say to God the first words that come into our heads, can result in dry-as-dust informal religion, sucked empty of depth and nourishment. There is a growing hunger for good liturgy. As a glad user of Jonny Gibson’s earlier book 'Be Thou My Vision', I warmly commend these deeply scriptural aids to remembering Christ in his death, his resurrection, his ascension, and the outpouring of his Spirit. They will do your heart good.” —Christopher Ash, Writer in Residence, Tyndale House, Cambridge

“Just as Jonny Gibson’s 'Be Thou My Vision' has enriched both my private worship and my preparation for the leading of public worship, so his 'O Sacred Head, Now Wounded' will be a significant and structured resource for worship, both personal and public, at a significant season of the year. There can be no more important subject for Christian reflection and meditation than the passion, death, and resurrection of our blessed Savior, Jesus Christ. I believe that the use of this resource will not only enable us to reflect carefully and thoughtfully on the saving work of our Redeemer but will also lead to a new desire to honor and glorify the one who loved us and gave himself for us.” —Stafford Carson, Principal Emeritus, Union Theological College, Belfast; Senior Director of Global Ministries, Westminster Theological Seminary

ENDORSEMENTS

“With Be Thou My Vision, Jonny Gibson has given us one of the richest resources of Christian devotion for individuals, families, and churches in decades. Now, in O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, he has given us a second timeless treasure that can be revisited each Advent season and help us finish the devotional year in a spirit of exultation rather than exhaustion. He inspires our minds and hearts by telling the gospel story at Christmas with simplicity and clarity through beautiful liturgy. By leaning on the finest Christian thinkers and poets in history, Gibson helps to fire the imagination of our souls to repeat the sounding joy like it was the first time. Buy this book and read it to yourself, your spouse, your family, or your friends! Then buy one for your pastor so that it may refresh your corporate celebrations as well. It will make the beauty of Christ’s peace the overriding narrative during Advent this year—and every year.” -Keith Getty, hymn writer; recording artist; coauthor, Sing! How Worship Transforms Your Life, Family, and Church

“Jonny Gibson’s 'Be Thou My Vision' has become an integral part of my personal worship time with the Lord, as well as a liturgical resource to use in planning for corporate worship. I am elated by the news of his latest project, focusing our attention and preparing our hearts for the Advent season. What a gift to the believer and to the church!” -Laura Story, recording artist; Worship Leader, Perimeter Church, Atlanta, Georgia

“With the flurry of activity, sometimes it’s hard even for us as believers to ‘put Christ back into Christmas.’ Expertly selected from our creedal, catechetical, and liturgical heritage, this treasure chest of focused meditation and praise helps us to revel in ‘the reason for the season.’ I plan on using it and giving it away, especially as a timely opportunity for evangelizing friends and family.” -Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California

“Jonny Gibson provides a rich gift in this collection. Not only has he curated some of the finest prayers and hymns of church history, but he has also arranged them into soul-enriching liturgies that echo the outlines of the gospel message even in their structure. I warmly commend this excellent resource.” -Matt Merker, hymn writer; Director of Creative Resources and Training, Getty Music; author, Corporate Worship

“Rich liturgy offers us structure and words to stir our hearts and channel our worship of God. It orients us by the Scriptures and the riches of the Christian tradition so that our minds and hearts begin to run in biblical paths. My prayer is that God will use this book to help many hearts to prepare him room.” -Joe Rigney, President, Bethlehem College & Seminary

“In this handsomely produced volume, Gibson has drawn upon the rich heritage of prayers and meditations from Christian leaders of the past, as well as biblical authors, to enhance our daily worship of God. While many Christians may be unaware of this legacy, the judicious choice of Christian creeds, collects, and meditations across twenty centuries, together with selected biblical texts, provides readers with a wealth of resources for their daily devotions from Advent to Epiphany. A rich array of wisdom and insight from our forebears provides a new landmark for Christians as they reflect, meditate, and offer praise to God for the gift of his incarnate Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.” -Glenn N. Davies, Archbishop of Sydney (2013–2021)

“Here is a daily liturgy for all who desire to grow in their enjoyment and worship of Christ. The prayers are robust, the meditations thoughtful, the confessions sincere, and the praise stirring. Any Christian would benefit from using it as a help in their private and family devotions.” -Jason Helopoulos, Senior Pastor, University Reformed Church, East Lansing, Michigan

“If you are weary of the materialistic, sentimental Christmas of our culture, this book will lead you back to heartfelt worship and adoration. While these liturgies are intended for private and family worship, they breathe a communion with the church of all ages. Above all, they will lead you into a deeper appreciation for the glory of the incarnation—and joyful worship of the one who came and is coming again!” -Dale Van Dyke, Pastor, Harvest Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Wyoming, Michigan

“This is a wonderful resource! It gives focus and articulation to the watchful waiting of Advent and, through its thoughtful selection of passages, a sense of the companionship of countless fellow travelers and faithful guides drawn from the entire history of the people of God in our journey through the season.” -Alastair J. 'When used slowly, for meditation and prayer, these pages have often been used by God's Spirit to kindle my dry heart.' --MARK DEVER

'The prayers in The Valley of Vision are steeped in Scripture, yet never succumb to mere formula. They are theologically fresh and vibrant, yet they are rooted in confessionalism. They range over a huge sweep of Christian experience and devotion, but they are never merely esoteric or cute. They brim with deep emotion and transparent passion, but they carefully avoid mere sentimentalism. This is a book that teaches readers to pray by example.' --D.A. CARSON

'The Valley of Vision is a wonderful collection of Puritan prayers which both help to shape and inform our own private devotions and, perhaps more importantly, aid pastors as they seek to lead their congregations in prayer and into the presence of God.' -CARL TRUEMAN

'I cannot commend enough The Valley of Vision, which is a compilation of over two-hundred pages of Puritan prayers (each of which are one page in length). I pray through one of these prayers every day. Sometimes the prayers are so meaningful and relevant that I will pray through the same prayer for days. This is a wonderful aid to supplement one s own prayers. Indeed, these prayers will also teach one how to pray, and, at the same time, they teach theological truth. I cannot think of any Christian who would not benefit from these prayers.' -GREG BEALE

'It's amazing how frequently the prayers from the little book The Valley of Vision show up in our worship services. The Valley of Vision is a collection of Puritan prayers, and I would put them in that category. That is, they are thoughtful, reflective, and meditative. They're even written in a certain kind of cadence, if you've ever noticed, which is probably very intentional, so that they might be used in corporate settings. But they came out of a deep heart of communion with God.' --JOHN PIPER

SAMPLE

The Valley of Vision

LORD, HIGH AND HOLY, MEEK AND LOWLY,

Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,

where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;

hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.

Let me learn by paradox

that the way down is the way up,

that to be low is to be high,

that the broken heart is the healed heart,

that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,

that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,

that to have nothing is to possess all,

that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,

that to give is to receive,

that the valley is the place of vision.

Lord, in the daytime stars can be seen from deepest wells,

and the deeper the wells the brighter thy stars shine;

Let me find thy light in my darkness,

thy life in my death,

thy joy in my sorrow,

thy grace in my sin,

thy riches in my poverty,

thy glory in my valley.

PREFACE

"The prayers in this book are drawn from the largely forgotten deposit of Puritan spiritual exercises, meditations and aspirations. They testify to the richness and color of evangelical thought and language that animated vital piety in an important stream of English religious life. It is hoped that their publication will help to redress the neglect of this vast ocean of Puritan spirituality. The Puritan Movement was a religious phenomenon of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, yet its influence continued at least to the time of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–92) who may be regarded as the last of the great Puritans. Although the political storm ended in 1660, its theological ground-swell carried forward distinct forms of practical religion for many decades, particularly family worship and private devotion. In these spheres, and in that of the authority of Scripture over the whole of life, New England Presbyterians and Congregationalists were at one with English Dissenters and Anglican evangelicals in a close-knit union that transcended differences of worship, discipline and polity. They spoke the same spiritual language, shared the same code of values, adopted the same attitude towards the Christian religion, and breathed out the same God-centered aspirations in a manner that makes it impossible to distinguish the voice of conformist from that of nonconformist. Thus, this book of Puritan prayers has a unity not often found in similar works. The strength of Puritan character and life lay in the practice of prayer and meditation. Many of those who held the doctrines of grace wrote down a record of God’s intimate dealings with their souls, not with an eye to publication, but, as in David Brainerd’s case, to test their spiritual growth, and to encourage themselves by their re-perusal in times of low spiritual fervor. Others, like William Jay and Henry Law, turned their personal devotions into corporate forms for family worship, and published them to the church at large. Yet others, such as Philip Doddridge and William Romaine, wrote prayers into their literary works in order to evoke the reader’s spiritual response. Many ministers went further and advised their congregations to put their private prayer thoughts on paper and vocalize them. There thus emerged an important corpus of inspiring Puritan prayers that are still largely unused.

In extracting this selection from Puritan literature it has been necessary to change some prayers from the plural and the third person into the singular and the first person in order that the book might be used chiefly in private devotion. But, by a change of pronoun, most of them can be employed in corporate worship. A final section has been added for occasions of corporate worship. Old idiom has been retained, but it has been necessary to reframe some phrases in order to accommodate archaic thought to modern understanding. A number of prayers were originally spiritual experiences, as in the case of Thomas Shepard, and some others are conflations from different sources to bind together a given theme. A poetic form has been adopted throughout as an aid to easier comprehension and utterance. Each prayer consists of a number of main clauses with subsidiary clauses that illuminate and enlarge the subject. In this way an opportunity is provided for pauses and reflections. The editor is thus responsible for the structure of the prayers as here printed. The book is not intended to be read as a prayer manual. The soul learns to pray by praying; for prayer is communion with a transcendent and immanent God who on the ground of his nature and attributes calls forth all the powers of the redeemed soul in acts of total adoration and dedication. The prayers should therefore be used as aspiration units, the several parts of which could become springboards for the individual’s own prayer subjects. These and their divisions can also serve homiletic purposes. The prayers are taken from the works of Thomas Shepard, Thomas Watson, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Isaac Watts, William Williams, Philip Doddridge, William Romaine, David Brainerd, Augustus Toplady, Christmas Evans, William Jay, Henry Law and Charles Haddon Spurgeon. They are sent out with the prayer of Philip Doddridge, that, ‘However weak and contemptible this work may seem in the eyes of the children of this world, and however imperfect it really be, it may nevertheless live before thee, and through a divine power be mighty to produce the rise and progress of religion.’ I desire to thank the Rev. Iain H. Murray of the Banner of Truth Trust for his encouragement to produce this work, Mr. S. M. Houghton, many of whose kindly criticisms have been accepted, and the Rev. R. E. Davies, who helped to resolve theological points. I am grateful to the Trustees of the British Museum, Dr. Williams’ Library, and the Evangelical Library for access to out-of-print books. THE PROMISE: The Amazing Story of Our Long-Awaited Savior
Jason Helopoulos, Illustrated by Rommel Ruiz

Inviting Children to See Jesus from Creation to the Manger

In the beginning God created the whole world. After six days of work, he had created the stars in the sky, the mighty oceans, tall trees, beautiful flowers, mighty sea creatures, and the most prized of all creation—Adam and Eve. Created in God’s image, Adam and Eve were friends with him. But one day “the worst of all days came”—the serpent deceived them and they sinned against God. Adam and Eve’s relationship with God was broken.

But God gave mankind a promise.

And what a great promise it was!

The promise of salvation! He promised that one would come who would crush the head of the lying serpent, one who would deliver mankind from their sin, one who would restore man and woman’s relationship with God.

But who has the power to do that? Does Abraham, a great man of faith? Does Moses, a great prophet? What about Joshua, the great conqueror?

Jason Helopoulos invites you to join him on a journey through the pages of the Bible in search of the promised Savior, from the garden of Eden to a manger in Bethlehem. With captivating illustrations by Rommel Ruiz and easy-to-read language, children and parents alike are invited to come to know the promised one—Jesus Christ.

ENDORSEMENTS

“What a great way to help kids (and their parents!) grasp where the story of the Bible is headed from the very beginning. This engaging book artfully presents the superiority and perfections of Jesus even as it puts the ‘heroes’ of the Old Testament story in their appropriate place.” -Nancy Guthrie, author, Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament Bible study series

“The Promise by Jason Helopoulos is a stunning book with a powerful message for both children and adults. Each beautifully illustrated page takes young readers on a journey through the Old Testament, helping them understand how all the stories fit together into one grand and glorious story of redemption. This wonderful book helps children to see Jesus as the perfect prophet, priest, and king who fulfills all the promises of God.” -Melissa B. Kruger, Director of Women’s Initiatives, The Gospel Coalition

“The whole message of the Bible is contained in one promise in one verse: Genesis 3:15. Now here is that promise simply explained and stunningly illustrated for our children with drama and tension. This is a book I’ll definitely be reading to my kids over and over and over.” -Jonathan Gibson, Assistant Professor of Old Testament, Westminster Theological Seminary

“It is, from the very beginning right up to its glorious end, the greatest story ever told. The Promise weaves together the beautiful prose of Jason Helopoulos and the stunning illustrations of Rommel Ruiz to tell that story with fresh wonder and delight. So settle into a comfy chair, pull the children into your lap, and relish the rich history of this story. I hope you will love it as much as I do.” -George Grant, Pastor, Parish Presbyterian Church, Franklin, Tennessee

“At a time when many Christian books for children are all too ready to provide moralistic accounts, Jason Helopoulos introduces the simple story of sin and redemption with studied economy of words and skillful repetition. Coupled with Rommel Ruiz’s masterful illustrations, this book is sure to grab the children’s attention, fix it on Christ, and provide an invaluable key for a proper understanding of Scripture. Parents can use it as a springboard for family devotions and a reinforcement to Sunday’s sermons, and children will return to it again and again to let their minds wander through the treasures of the wisdom and knowledge of God.” -Simonetta Carr, author, Christian Biographies for Young Readers

“What a wonderful resource for children! Jason Helopoulos’s The Promise—complemented by Rommel Ruiz's riveting illustrations—teaches kids that Jesus is our perfect Savior.” -Deepak Reju, Pastor of Biblical Counseling and Family Ministry, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC; author, Great Kings of the Bible

THE FAMILY WORSHIP BOOK: A Resource Book for Family Devotions
Terry L. Johnson

Do you struggle to provide enjoyable, meaningful and spiritual times of family devotions? Do you avoid the whole subject but have the nagging thought that you should be doing something?

Let Terry & Family Worship equip you for leading your family in worship with the help of some key questions: What is family worship? What have other people done? Why Should I do it? How can I start? A Valuable resource which you will not exhaust in years.

"Terry Johnson has provided us a superb resource for family religion. Johnson provides a brief but compelling argument for the importance of family worship, but then takes those he has convinced in theory to the next step: actually putting it into practice! In a day and age when family worship is a rarity, and in which parents who are called to lead in it are not likely to have had personal experience of it in their own upbringing, Johnson's book will prove to be an invaluable aid. May the Lord use this book to bring about a revival of family worship in our land." - Ligon Duncan, Chancellor and CEO, Reformed Theological Seminary

"A great service to parents who desire to revive the practice of family worship. Johnson's book provides many practical resources and ideas for actually putting this into practice...an excellent resource for Christian families." - Ray Van Neste, Director, R. C. Ryan Center for Biblical Studies, Union University, Jackson, Tennessee.

FAMILY WORSHIP FOR THE CHRISTMAS SEASON
Ray Rhodes, Jr.

"In a day when having regular family worship is no longer a foregone conclusion (even among conservative Evangelicals), Ray Rhodes provides a wonderful impetus to start: a month of clear, biblical, practical devotions celebrating the birth of King Jesus. Hopefully, those who begin this Christmas using this excellent resource will continue gathering daily at the family altar throughout the coming year." - David W. Bailey, Ph.D., Author - Speaking the Truth in Love: The Life and Legacy of Roger Nicole

"Ray Rhodes has written a wonderfully creative book on family worship for the Christmas season. For a father or mother to take their children through these precious truths would create a fond memory that the children would have for the rest of their life. The book is doctrinally sound, well written, and greatly honoring to our Lord. I'm going to order three copies right now!" - Martha Peace, Biblical Counselor and author of 'The Excellent Wife'

"The Christmas season is a great time for daily family worship. If you've never enjoyed family worship on a consistent basis, there's no better time to start. Whether your family already enjoys the biblical and historic Christian practice of family worship or you're just beginning, consider using Ray Rhodes' engaging Family Worship for the Christmas Season this December." - Dr. Donald S. Whitney , author of "Spiritual Disciplines of the Christian Life' and 'Family Worship: In the Bible, in History, and in Your Home.'

"Author and speaker Ray Rhodes gives parents some expert help with these insightful and truth-filled devotional exercises for family worship during the Christmas season. Make December different this year by trying them out with your family. This book can make a significant difference in your family's understanding of the incarnation." - Jim Elliff, Christian Communicators Worldwide

"It is rare to find solid Family Worship resources in our day, let alone one for the advent season. Ray Rhodes has provided an outstanding tool for busy fathers during this opportune time of year. May God powerfully use it in the godly instruction of our families and for the generations to come!" - Pastor Jerry Marcellino, author of 'Rediscovering the Lost Treasure of Family Worship'

"The Incarnation of Jesus Christ is one of the most important events in the history of the world. Too many years families get so tangled in the trappings of Christmas, however, that they miss its true wonder. Ray Rhodes has written a wonderful book that elegantly encourages and practically helps families draw near to each another as they draw near to the Lord in celebrating his birth. I highly recommend it." - John Crotts, pastor and author of 'Mighty Men: the Starter's Guide to Leading Your Family', 'Craftsmen: Christ-centered Proverbs for Men', and co-author with Martha Peace of 'Tying the Knot Tighter'.

THE CHRISTIAN'S PRESENT FOR ALL SEASONS: Containing Devotional Thoughts of Eminent Divines
Joseph Hall, Isaac Watts, John Owen, Richard Sibbes, John Flavel, Jonathan Edwards, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, William Jay and More

An Introductory Essay on "Devotion" by William B. Sprague sets the stage for a rich devotional journey from Joseph Hall to William Jay. This volume was published in 1866 by The American Tract Society and it contains dozens and dozens of brief devotional exercises to stimulate the brethren to love and good works. The contributors to this volume are a veritable who's who in evangelical circles from the Puritan era to the mid-nineteenth century. The Names are as follows:

JOSEPH HALL - RICHARD SIBBES - JEREMY TAYLOR

ROBERT LEIGHTON - RICHARD BAXTER - JOHN OWEN

WILLIAM BATES - JOHN FLAVEL - STEPHEN CHARNOCK

JOHN BUNYAN - JOHN TILLOTSON - ISAAC BARROW

JOHN HOWE - EZEKIEL HOPKINS - THOMAS KEN

THOMAS COMBER - BENJAMIN JENKS - MATTHEW HENRY

THOMAS WILSON - ISAAC WATTS - THOMAS ADAM

PHILIP DODDRIDGE - JONATHAN EDWARDS - JOHN WESLEY

WILLIAM ROMAINE - ROBERT WALKER - SAMUEL DAVIES

JOHN NEWTON - THOMAS SCOTT - JOHN LOGAN

TIMOTHY DWIGHT - ANDREW FULLER - ROBERT HALL

JOHN MASON - THOMAS CHALMERS - REGINALD HEBER

EDWARD BICKERSTETH - WILLIAM NEVINS - WILLIAM JAY

W.B. Sprague concluded his Introductory Essay with these words: "Among the many excellent works adapted especially to help the Christian in his devotions, this book holds a prominent place. The Compiler seems to have ranged through almost the whole field of devotional literature, and to have gathered up all the brightest gems that came in his way; and so successful has he been that one may open the book at random, as often as he will, and will never find his eye resting upon anything that he can afford to pass over, or that does not supply the elements of rich devotional thought. It is difficult to say which is most to be admired, the Compiler's good judgment and taste, or his extraordinary patience in research, that has brought to us the heavenly thoughts of so many saints and sages. This is truly a beautiful compilation of DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS."

D.A. Harsha, the Editor, said the following in his Preface: "It is more than ten years since the preparation of the present volume was commenced. During all this time, the selection of these beautiful passages has been slowly but steadily carried on. The work was undertaken in connection with the editing of a Library of Christian Authors, embracing Memoirs of Eminent Divines, and their choice works--a series whose preparation is not yet completed. In performing this long and arduous labor, and while carefully perusing the works of our best authors, from the 17th century to the present time, passages in each author, which the editor regarded as among the finest specimens of devotional and practical writing, were selected for the present volume. In this manner have these 'calm and holy thoughts' of those who have shone as stars in the firmament of the Christian Church, been brought together; and it is believed that in the following pages will be found some of the choicest gems of English sacred literature--gems which 'within small compass, and in purest gold, will preserve their lustre for ages.'"

"We sometimes sing the opening lines of Psalm 63 with these words:

'GOD is my great desire, His face I seek the first

To him my heart and soul aspire, For him I thirst.'

This book of devotions by such eminent saints makes it irresistible because the fervent desires of our hearts for GOD Triune must be fed." - Erroll Hulse

"This is sweet food from savory writers. Perfect for the breakfast table, the bedside, the bathroom, red lights, or anywhere else where a minute or two can be redeemed for your soul's nourishment." - Dr. Robert Martin, Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle and Editor of Reformed Baptist Theological Review

"A quick scan of the table of contents makes clear that this book could be referred to as the hall of fame of devotional literature. Theological depth and practical application define the writings of men like John Flavel, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Matthew Henry and the rest of the authors of this book. This book would make a wonderful gift for any occasion of the year. The recipient of such a gift would have a library in one volume of some of the greatest minds in Christian history. This book would be useful in leading family worship because it would expose your family to classic reformed theology in a devotional format. Buy this book in bulk, keep a copy for yourself and pass down the truth by giving your remaining copies away." - Ray Rhodes, Jr. is President of Nourished in the Word Ministries and author of two Solid Ground Books, "Family Worship for the Reformation Season" and "Family Worship for the Christmas Season."

"In a day of time-sensitivity when every minute and hour seems to be at a premium, the leisure our forebears had for reading seems a pipe-dream for most of God's people. What is the solution? We need better stewardship of our time, for starters. But also we need books like this one that distill the riches of eminent divines from the past and give them to us in succinct packages that will stay with us through the day and week.I am glad to see this marvellous collection reprinted by Solid Ground Christian Books." - Dr. Michael Haykin

One book notice said, "A collection of the holiest aspirations of the holiest men."

THE LORD'S PRAYER: Learning from Jesus on What, Why, and How to Pray
Kevin DeYoung

Bestselling Author Kevin DeYoung Explores Jesus’s Foundational Prayer

Christians know the importance of prayer, but the act of praying can be a real challenge. Some have the desire, but not always the will; others worry they don’t do it well. Books about prayer usually emphasize spiritual discipline, but that can foster more guilt than reassurance. In The Lord’s Prayer, Kevin DeYoung closely examines Christ’s model for prayer, giving readers a deeper understanding of its content and meaning, and how it works in the lives of God’s people. Walking through the Lord’s Prayer word by word, DeYoung helps believers gain the conviction to develop a stronger prayer life and a sense of freedom to do so.

“The Lord’s Prayer is the most important teaching ever about talking with God. That’s why it’s a subject of universal and perennial interest to followers of Jesus. It’s so easy to learn yet infinitely profound. So many have thought so much and so deeply about it, yet no one writer can expound all its riches. Kevin DeYoung has added another helpful volume to the church’s library on the prayer. His book is fresh without trying to be clever, contemporary without forgetting church history, and concise without being simplistic. It’s exactly the kind of work we’ve come to expect from the pen of DeYoung and demonstrates why people find his preaching and writing so edifying.” -Donald S. Whitney, Professor of Biblical Spirituality and Associate Dean, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Family Worship; Praying the Bible; and Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life

“The Lord’s Prayer is familiar to many of us, but how well do we really understand each phrase? Scholarly works on the Lord’s Prayer can turn out to be surprisingly complex. Here is a clear, grace-filled, practical exposition that will benefit readers of all levels. DeYoung helps readers see the place of the Lord’s Prayer in the context of all of Scripture and how it relates to Christ himself.” -Brandon D. Crowe, Professor of New Testament, Westminster Theological Seminary

“As part of listening to a daily liturgy podcast, I pray the Lord’s Prayer. I look forward to it as a highlight of each day, and it never feels like a ritual. Kevin DeYoung’s book encourages me in my daily routine, ignites my passion for praying the Lord’s Prayer, and solidifies my understanding of the petitions I gladly voice. The Lord’s Prayer is clear and direct, concise and profound—so too is DeYoung’s highly recommended book!” -Gregg R. Allison, Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Sojourners and Strangers; Roman Catholic Theology and Practice; and Historical Theology

“Kevin DeYoung has given us a brief, encouraging, insightful look at the Lord’s Prayer. He combines for us his own meditations and learning and adds some ideas about this prayer from the collective wisdom of the past. The result is what we would expect from this author: a pastoral, clear, simple (not simplistic), inspiring, and biblical teaching on the best-known prayer that ever came from the lips of our Lord." -Miguel Núñez, Teaching Pastor, International Baptist Church of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Founding President, Wisdom & Integrity Ministries

HAWKER'S PIOUS REFLECTIONS: A Daily Journey in the New Testament and Psalms into the Unsearchable Riches of Christ
Robert Hawker, with a Foreword by Joel Beeke

"Gentleman, if you want something full of marrow and fatness, cheering to your own hearts by way of comment, and likely to help you in giving your hearers rich expositions, buy Dr. Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary. Dr. Hawker was the very least of commentators in the matter of criticism, but he sees Jesus, and that is a sacred gift which is most precious whether the owner be a critic or no. There is always such a savor of the Lord Jesus Christ in Dr. Hawker that you cannot read him without profit." - Charles H. Spurgeon from "Commenting on Commentaries"

""Robert Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary edifies believers by providing spiritual comments on each section of Scripture. The 'Pious Reflections' section that follows Hawker's comments on each chapter of Scripture marvelously enhances this devotional character. For the genuine Christian, here is devotional writing at its best: warmly Christ-centered, eminently practical, personally searching. I commend it highly for private and family worship." - Joel Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, MI

THIS VOLUME HAS NEVER EXISTED IN THIS FORM.

THE STRUCTURE:

Monday - Friday each week you will read one chapter of the New Testament along with the Pious Reflections of Hawker. This way in 260 days (52 weeks x 5) you will complete the entire New Testament of 260 chapters.

EXPLORING THE BIBLE: A Bible Reading Plan for Kids
DAVID MURRAY with Foreword by Don Whitney and Illustrations by Scotty Reifsnyder

A Journey through the Bible for Kids

Reading the Bible is like taking a trip through God's story, setting out to explore and experience the beautiful views found within. But without a map, it's easy to get lost.

Exploring the Bible leads kids ages 6–12 through the Bible one day at a time over the course of a year. For use alongside any Bible, this workbook will help them see the overarching story of God's Word and lay the foundation for a lifetime of discovering truths about God, humanity, and the gospel.

Each weekly entry includes:

Daily Bible readings

Prayer points

Memory verse

Discussion questions

Space for sermon notes and reflections

ENDORSEMENTS

“There is so much I could say to commend Exploring the Bible, but any praise would pale in comparison to this, the ultimate parental endorsement: I gave all three of my children Exploring the Bible as their very first experience of personal devotions. All three used it, all three enjoyed it, and all three benefited tremendously from using it. I wholeheartedly recommend it for your children, too.” -Tim Challies, blogger, Challies.com

“This Bible reading plan has it all—engaging graphics, kid-sized reading assignments, space for reflection, and helpful commentary. What an exciting endeavor—to help children read (for themselves!) an overview of the Bible in a year! I can’t wait to give away copies of Exploring the Bible to the kids in my life.” -Gloria Furman, author, Alive in Him and Labor with Hope

“Too many times children are told about the Bible without ever being encouraged to read the text themselves. In his book Exploring the Bible, David Murray has given a gift to disciple-making parents everywhere. This resource will help children and families dig into the riches of the Bible while subtly teaching the necessity of daily reading and learning with God’s people. I can see individual children using it or whole families sharing their discoveries around the dinner table. As you seek to raise disciples who are hungry for and knowledgeable of the Word, this resource will be invaluable.” -Chap Bettis, author, The Disciple-Making Parent

“Exploring the Bible has been carefully crafted. The passages selected, the layout and design, and the opportunities given for children to reflect and respond will work in concert to guide them into an understanding of what the Bible is all about. I hope it is widely used.” -Kenneth Berding, Director, Bible Fluency; Professor of New Testament, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University; author, Bible Revival: Recommitting Ourselves to One Book

“Encouragingly brief, carefully chosen passages lead explorers through the main ideas of the entire Bible in 365 days, with captions and questions to sharpen their focus. Wonderful weekly peaks connect the Old and New Testaments, pointing to Jesus, reinforcing the big picture, and urging personal application. This treasure is at the top of my gift list for new Bible explorers!” -Gail Schoonmaker, illustrator, The Big Picture Story Bible; author, Big Picture Bible Crafts

“Without guidance and a plan, children will flounder when trying to read and understand the Bible on their own. That’s why resources like David Murray’s book are so important. I don’t even want to imagine what my Christian life and my ministry would have been without the encouragement and structure for daily Bible reading I received as a child. But if I’d had something like Exploring the Bible, I think my scriptural foundations would have been even stronger.” -Donald S. Whitney, Professor of Biblical Spirituality and Associate Dean, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Family Worship; Praying the Bible; and Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life

“An important, but often neglected, part of the education we provide for our children is instruction in the actual contents of the Bible. We give our children math flashcards and grammar workbooks, we enroll them in music lessons and put them on sports teams, but we often don’t know where to begin to teach them what’s in the Bible. Exploring the Bible will get elementary-school-aged children started reading Scripture on their own, giving them a grasp of its overall big picture as they read.” -Starr Meade, author, Training Hearts, Teaching Minds; The Most Important Thing You’ll Ever Study; and Give Them Truth

"Spurgeon was the consummate preacher and his sermons were mightily used of God in converting sinners and blessing his people. His sermons are the most reprinted and read in history, and justly so. This collection, selected by his son Thomas, will be a valuable addition to any family's library." - Dr. Robert P. Martin, Pastor, Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle, WA, and author of A Guide to the Puritans

"Spurgeon was anointed by the Holy Spirit with such an extraordinary anointing that he was always a fountain of life in opening up the Scripture. He loved the Puritans and dug gold galore out of their writings." - Erroll Hulse, Pastor and Author of numerous books

"Something 'new' by Spurgeon. What else do you need to know? And Spurgeon on the gospel? That should seal the deal for anyone. Sometimes it is difficult to get people who are skeptical of the Reformed faith to read someone of whom they might be suspect due to ignorant associations. "By MacArthur? By Sproul? I've heard that they believe______." But no one is doubtful about Spurgeon. They will get the biblical gospel, and Spurgeon is a name people trust. Don't miss the opportunity to obtain this scarce volume." - Dr. Don Kistler, founder of Northampton Press

"Whenever there is a way to get Charles Spurgeon's writing into the hands of more people there is great reason to rejoice. The treasure that Solid Ground Christian Books is making available is one that Christians everywhere will want to own for themselves and get for others. I have heard of people who read a Spurgeon sermon each morning during their private worship. While a wonderful practice, that task would be daunting to many people. However, 'The Gospel for the People' is just right for such a discipline. Imagine reading a Spurgeon sermon for the next 60 days and taking a summary of that sermon and using for family worship each evening! Well, no need to imagine; just order 'The Gospel for the People' today and you will have such a tool." - Ray Rhodes is a well-known conference speaker and is the author of numerous books including a Family Worship series produced by Solid Ground Christian Books

A PEN DIPPED IN LOVE: Letters from the Heart of John Newton
John Newton

John Newton (1725-1807), converted slave-trader, preacher, and hymn-writer, was one of the most colorful figures in the Evangelical Awakening of the eighteenth century. 'Once an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa', he once wrote for his epitaph, 'by the rich mercy of Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had long labored to destroy.'

It was through his prolific correspondence that Newton fulfilled his distinctive work as 'the letter-writer par excellence of the Evangelical Revival'. His grasp of Scripture and deep personal experience of the 'amazing grace' of God, his many friends (among them, Whitefield, Cowper and Wilberforce), his many and varied trials, his country pastorate, his strong, clear, idiomatic style - all these factors combined to prepare the author of 'How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds', for the exercise of his special gift.

"In few writers are Christian doctrine, experience and practice more happily balanced than in the author of these Letters, and few write with more simplicity, piety and force." - C. H. Spurgeon

"What thousands have derived repeated profit and pleasure from the perusal of these utterances of the heart! Nor ever will they cease to be found means of grace whilst God has a church on earth." - William Jay

"It was Newton's goodness rather than his greatness that rendered him so especially attractive; the abundance of the grace of God that was in him. In this respect he was pre-eminent, justifying the eulogy of William Jay who speaks of him as one of the most perfect instances of the spirit and temper of Christianity he ever knew. Some men excel in one virtue more than another. But Newton's character was beautiful in its entireness. It rested on a solid foundation; the initial Christian grace of humility, and of this grace he was a most striking example. He never for a moment forgot that by the grace of God he was what he was." "This book was given to me by a dear friend 46 years ago this month as I was a student in Seminary. It has had a profound impact upon my life ever since the day it was received. My copy has nearly fallen apart, and many of the letters have been read more than a dozen times. Newton was a man after God's heart, and his letters were written with a pen that was dipped in love.

It is a great honor for Solid Ground to be able to give this book a new chance to touch the hearts of many throughout the world. Once you have completed this Introduction to Newton's Letters you will surely want to attain all his letters as they are published by Banner of Truth. This would be a superb gift to give to a new Christian, a Seminary student, a Christian teacher and even someone who is yet a stranger of God and of grace. Just read the titles and you will want this book." -The Publisher

BEWARE OF RATTLESNAKES! Lessons for Teens from History, Sports and Odds and Ends
Peter Jeffery

Peter Jeffery has a special gift of saying a great deal in a few words. Once again he has hit the mark in this brand new title intended for young people. There are 52 very brief chapters covering a great variety of subjects from Kings and Presidents to athletes and animals. Young pople (and the not so young) will find the author an able guide to lead them into lessons that will stick and stay. This can be given as a gift to young people, and also used in Family Worship by moms and dads. The first time I heard Peter Jeffery preach I was immediately struck with his uncany ability to illustrate profound truth in simple words. It is a true honor for Solid Ground Christian Books to be asked to publish the latest book from the heart of a dear friend who loves Christ Jesus more than life.

"Peter Jeffrey is a man who is rooted. He is rooted in who he was before he became a believer in Jesus Christ. He is rooted in who he became by the grace of God after becoming a Christian. And he is growing his roots in who he will be in glory. I see all three phases of Peter's life in this remarkable book. He has not strayed far from his roots. His genius is keeping us connected to the foundational issues of life. This new book will be perfect for young Christians of all ages--teens and seniors, men or women. Sunday School teachers, parents for family devotions, home schoolers and those who want to see how to communicate truth in small bites that get eaten need to read this book! If my grown up children were still home, I would use this book for family devotions. If I were teaching a Sunday School class for boys or girls, I would use this book. If I were starting a beginners class for new converts, I would use this book. If I wanted to help a non-reader get started reading good things that create a thirst for more, I would give them this book. Each section is just the right size and grabs thought. If I were living in an estate or if I was a soldier at war or if I were a student off at school or if I were a busy businessman who knew my way around business but not the Bible yet, I would want this book." - Steve Martin (retired after 31 years of pastoral ministry in Atlanta, Georgia, now has a ministry of encouragement to other, younger pastors and speaks at churches, conferences, and retreats.)

"Destiny beats in the heart of man. Each of us were born for a purpose bigger than ourselves. We know instinctively that life matters. The things done on earth matter eternally. In the race of life, the opposition is not the people around us, but the mediocrity that so many seem to settle for. This is a book your heart will love and your soul will cherish, revealing what it takes to win, both in sport and in life; and more than that, the most important news we could ever hear, the Gospel of Jesus Christ." - John Samson, author of "Twelve What Abouts" by Solid Ground

THE JOHN THE BAPTIST OF THE REFORMATION: A Memoir of John Huss, the Bohemian Reformer and Martyr
Translated from the German by Thomas O. Summers with an Introductory Note by J.H. Merle d'Aubigne

John Huss (a.k.a. Jan Hus) is regarded to be one of the earliest known religious thinkers and reformers in the world. A philosopher and a Master at Charles University (Prague), Huss was greatly influenced by the writings and teachings of John Wyclife. He made a number of followers during his time, who came to be known as Hussites. Reformers, in the later years, looked up to Huss for his unswerving commitment in the face of the church's cunning brutality, due to which he had to face extreme consequences. Condemning Huss' uprising, the Church first excommunicated him and then burned him to death, after an unfair trial.

This brief account of his life will serve as a wonderful introduction to the life of this great hero of the faith. Despite incredible cruelty that lasted for many months, even some of his enemies acknowledged his humility and godliness. This book would be very useful to use in Family Worship as the chapters are all brief and to the point.

Famous Church Historian J.H. Merle d'Aubigne said the following about Huss - "John Huss preached in Bohemia a century before Luther preached in Saxony. He seems to have penetrated deeper than his predecessors into the essence of Christian truth. He prayed to Christ for grace to glory only in his cross and the the inestimable humiliation of his sufferings. But his attacks were directed less against the errors of the Romish church than against the scandalous lives of the clergy. Yet he was, if we may be allowed the expression, the John the Baptist of the Reformation. The flames of his pile kindled a fire in the church that cast a brilliant light into the surrounding darkness, and whose glimmerings were not to be so readily extinguished."

The following powerful testimony if found in Foxe's BOOK OF MARTYRS -

"The bishops appointed by the Council [of Constance] stripped him of his priestly garments, degraded him, put a paper mitre on his head, on which was painted devils, with this inscription, 'A ringleader of heretics.' Which when he saw, he said: 'My Lord Jesus Christ, for my sake, did wear a crown of thorns; why should not I then, for His sake, again wear this light crown, be it ever so ignominious? Truly I will do it, and that willingly.' When it was set upon his head, the bishop said: 'Now we commit thy soul unto the devil.' 'But I,' said John Huss, lifting his eyes towards the heaven, 'do commend into Thy hands, O Lord Jesus Christ, my spirit which Thou has redeemed.'

When the chain was put about him at the stake, he said, with a smiling countenance, 'My Lord Jesus Christ was bound with a harder chain than this for my sake, and why then should I be ashamed of this rusty one?'

When the faggots were piled up to his very neck, the duke of Bavaria was so officious as to desire him to abjure. 'No,' said Huss, 'I never preached any doctrine of an evil tendency; and what I taught with my lips I now seal with my blood.' He then said to the executioner, 'You are now going to burn a goose, (Huss signifying 'goose' in the Bohemian language) but in a century you will have a 'swan' which you can neither roast nor boil.' If he were prophetic, he must have meant Martin Luther, who shone about a hundred years after, and who had a swan for his arms.

The flames were now applied to the faggots, when our martyr sung a hymn with so loud and cheerful a voice that he was heard through all the cracklings of the combustibles, and the noise of the multitude. At length his voice was interrupted by the severity of the flames, which soon closed his existence.

Then, with great diligence, gathering the ashes together, they cast them into the river Rhine, that the least remnant of that man should not be left upon the earth, whose memory, notwithstanding, cannot be abolished out of the minds of the godly, neither by fire, neither by water, neither by any kind of torment."

THE GODLY HOME: Selected from A Christian Directory
RICHARD BAXTER, Edited by Randall Pedersen, Intro. by J.I. Packer

In twenty-first century America, at a time when the family structure is crumbling, divorce rates are at an all-time high, and respect for parents is diminishing, The Godly Home serves as a balm for those seeking God's plan for the family. With an introduction by J. I. Packer, this book includes topics for those passionate about families or those teaching on the characteristics of a godly family. Richard Baxter covers topics such as marriage, children, and family worship methodically and comprehensively through both hypothetical and real-life questions and concerns that arise in family dynamics. He uses arguments, objections, and frequent Scripture to help husbands, wives, and children to live godly lives.More than three centuries ago, Puritan church leader Baxter compiled a 1,143-page tome entitled Christian Directory, which included a section on family life. The Godly Home is the only stand-alone version of that section of Christian Directory. Editor Randall Pederson has updated the language and syntax to make this seventeenth-century collection of words one that will continue on for generations to come.

Endorsement: "The Puritans elevated the concept that our homes and families should be like little churches and godly enclaves more than anyone else in church history. They preached scores of sermons and wrote numerous books on how to live as Christian husbands, wives, and children. One of the most important among these books was written by Richard Baxter and has long been buried in miniscule print in his A Christian Directory. In The Godly Home, Randall Pederson has masterfully edited Baxter's tour de force on the duties of husbands, wives, children, and teenagers in building God-glorifying homes. Though a few items in this book may seem outdated, the vast majority of it provides solid, convicting, and instructive biblical advice. If every Christian family, by the Spirit's grace, conscientiously practiced the godly piety Baxter commends in this book, homes, churches, and nations would be truly transformed for good and we would see better days ahead." - Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF REDEMPTION: A Compact Survey of the Old and New Testaments
by James Oscar Boyd and J. Gresham Machen

"Did you ever want to read a short book that unveils in an informative, sound, edifying, Reformed way the entire narrative of redemptive history from Genesis through Revelation? The OT scholar James Boyd and his NT counterpart, J. Gresham Machen, composed this book for you nearly a century ago, and I am grateful that Solid Ground Christian Books is unearthing and reprinting it. With helpful questions appended to each of its thirty-eight lessons, this little book makes an ideal tool for family worship so that you can lead your children quickly through the main redemptive thoughts of Bible history." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"This book surveys the history of God's redeeming grace. It reviews Old Testament history, disclosing the stream of God's redeeming purposes flowing down through older times. It also reviews New Testament history, disclosing the broadening and deepening of that purpose for us men and for mankind in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his Church." - Harold McA. Robinson

First published in 1922, this volume is one of the most precise and concise books I have ever seen that covers the entire narrative of redemptive history from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. James Boyd, the Old Testament scholar, and J. Gresham Machen, the New Testament scholar, join their efforts to reach the simple and the learned in one book. This book would be perfect as a tool in the family and the church, as it concludes each of the 38 chapters with a series of Questions on the Lesson.

THIS IS THE PERFECT BOOK TO GIVE TO A NEW BELEIVER.

James O. Boyd introduces the earliest chapters of the Bible immediately following man's Fall with these words: "God's tender love for his foolish, rebellious creatures 'will not let them go.' At the gates of the garden from which their sin has forever banished them, God already declares his purpose to 'bruise' the head of that serpent, Rom. 16:20, who had brought 'sin into the world and death by sin,' Gen. 3:15. Through the 'seed of the woman'---a 'Son of Man' of some future day---sinful man can escape the death he has brought on himself. And from Seth, the child 'appointed instead of' murdered Abel, a line of men descends, who believe this promise of God. Ch. 5. In Enoch we find them 'walking with God,' v. 24, in a fellowship that seemed lost when paradise was lost."

J. Gresham Machen opens Lesson II of his material entitled "The Coming of the Lord" with these powerful words: "When the Son of God came to earth for our salvation, the world was ready for his coming. The whole course of history had been made to lead up to him. And he was well worthy of being thus the goal of history. For the One who came was none other than the eternal Son of God, the Word who was with God and who was God. He had existed from all eternity; he had been the instrument in creating the world. He was himself truly God, the same in substance with the Father, and equal in power and glory. Yet the One who was so great humbled himself to be born as a man and finally to suffer and die. His coming was a voluntary act, an act of the Father in giving him for the sins of the world, and his own act which he performed because he loved us. It was an act of infinite condescension. The Son of God humbled himself to lead a true human life; he took upon himself our nature. He was born, he grew in wisdom and stature, he suffered, he died. He was always God, but he became also man. Who can measure the depth of such condescending love?"

(1) TRIUMPH AND TRUTH: 46 Gripping Stories from Church History

Christianity is a faith in love with history. God took on human flesh and dwelt among us. The Spirit carried that divine work over the centuries, providing courage and maturity even amid our imperfections. Christians find their true family line not through tribes and ethnic blood but in the bond of faithfulness and shed blood that has united our family for millennia. We too often view Church history as the story of obscure aliens instead of the lives of brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers.

In this collection of forty-six brief biographies for children, Hannula sketches the stirring trials and triumphs of many famous and some lesser known figures in our family of faith—including Augustine, Charlemagne, Anselm, Luther, Bunyan, and C.S. Lewis. Through them we can begin to enjoy the old paths and find rest for our souls. "Thus says the LORD: Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls"(Jer. 6:16).

"Here are forty-six gripping stories of men and women of Christ from Polycarp to C.S. Lewis and Richard Wurmbrand! The whole family will be able to read, enjoy, and celebrate these gifts of God to His Church." -Dr. David Calhoun, Professor of Church History, Covenant Seminary

"What better way to bring a Christian child to aspire to spiritual greatness than to set before him or her the heroes of the Church's past and a picture of godliness and fortitude in flesh and blood. It is the Bible's own way to train up children in the faith. We used these sketches in our family worship. Our children enjoyed them at first reading and have remembered them since. I enthusiastically recommend Hannula's Trial and Triumph." -Dr. Robert Rayburn, Faith Presbyterian Church

"Restoring the Christian story requires giving an important place in Christian consciousness to the heroes of the whole church ... A wonderful beginning has been made by Hannula in his Trial and Triumph." -Dr. Peter Leithart, Theopolis Institute

"An excellent overview of great figures in church history in one volume." -Jeff Robinson, The Gospel Coalition

(2) RADIANT: Fifty Remarkable Women in Church History

From South America to Europe, from China to Africa to the Wild West, in prisons and in throne rooms, many great Christians have left a stunning legacy for their successors. These short and moving biographies for young people introduce fifty often unfamiliar champions of the faith: women like Ida Kahn, who opened the first hospital in a Chinese city of 300,000 people; Lady Anne Hamilton, who rode with the Covenanter cavalry at the decisive Battle of Berwick; and Anngrace Taban, who was forced to type secret battle plans for the Sudan People's Liberation Army. In a culture where women's role in society is often at question, these examples of faithfulness can remind us that courage and godliness are possible anywhere, even if you are surrounded by Muslim raiders, Japanese guards, Nazis, or cannibals.

"Through these robust and hearty profiles Richard Hannula brings to life fifty women of faith who helped shape church history. His interest is authentic, his research is solid, and his admiration is genuine." -Joel Belz, founder of World Magazine

"Women have made a vital contribution to the growth and progress of the Christian Church since the beginning. Hannula recognizes and celebrates that contribution and rallies the rising generation of Christian women to lives of action, vitality and faithfulness. A great read!"" -Gwen Westerlund, author of Faithful Following and Telling the Next Generation

"From the time of Christ's ministry on earth until the present day, faithful women have left us a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and service in the midst of trials. In this new collection of stories, Richard Hannula has given us a rich resource of encouragement and inspiration."" ~-Nancy Wilson, author of Praise Her in the Gates

"It is deeply encouraging to find Christian historians and authors beginning to recognize the important role played by women in the history of God’s people, and pen both popular and more academic studies of this important subject. ...a good representation of the globalization of the Christian faith in the past two hundred years." -Michael A.G. Haykin, Professor of Church History The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

(3) FOR CHRIST'S CROWN: Sketches of Puritans and Covenanters

Whether Edward Dering preaching boldly before a fuming Queen Elizabeth, or Sandy Peden evading the king's men on horse, or Hugh Mackail undergoing the torture of "the Boot" and then execution for his faith, the Puritans' and Covenanters' courage and conviction shines as bright as ever today. In this collection of thirty brief biographies (with seven illustrations), Hannula brings these stories to life, both for young people who should grow up knowing their spiritual ancestors and the heroes of our faith, and for adults who need to make their acquaintance for the first time.

Because of the fierceness with which they were persecuted, many left Britain for America to worship God in the manner they wished to. If we are to truly understand ourselves, our theological heritage, and our current situation, we need to know the stories of these brave and faithful men and women and the legacy they left.

"From the world of Pilgrim's Progress comes this heroes' gallery of brave believers who would suffer for their convictions rather than betray them. Though angled for youth, these vivid vignettes will touch every Christian heart." -J. I. Packer, Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

"Accurate history... Lively style...This book is a joy to read, and a challenge to faith and obedience." -David Calhoun, Professor of Church History Emeritus, Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri

"Richard Hannula's historical sketches of eminent Christians are a treasure to mine. The brief biographies are engaging, instructive, deeply humbling, and Christ magnifying. Highly recommended." -Ian Hamilton, Minister of Cambridge Presbyterian Church, Cambridge, England

(4) HERALDS OF THE REFORMATION: 30 Biographies of Sheer Grace

The Reformation was an era with many examples of remarkable faithfulness, courage, and learning. However, few Christians today are familiar with their spiritual ancestors, the men who are responsible not only for much of our current understanding of the Bible and the Christian gospel, but also for the massive explosion of the Gospel all over the world today. If we want to continue to bear witness to the truth as faithfully as our fathers in the faith, we need to know their stories. Hannula's book includes thirty short, but profound stories of Reformation-era courage. They can easily be read aloud to children or used by homeschoolers as part of their curriculum. Additionally, this book includes an overview of key events in the Reformation, a detailed Timeline from 1516 to 1598, seven short summaries of Reformation Basics, and comprehension questions and answers on all thirty biographies.

"Richard Hannula has an eye for personal heroism and a flair for writing simply and vividly about it. Here he spotlights thirty Reformation stalwarts who gave their lives, all metaphorically, a number literally, to advance the gospel, make Christ known and save souls. From start to finish, a gripping read." -J.I. Packer, Professor of Theology, Regent College

"These lively and engaging biographical vignettes stretch from the forerunners of the Reformation like John Wycliffe to the great Scottish reformer John Knox. In an age of unworthy anti-heroes, here is a treasure trove of true heroes for children and parents alike." -Terry L. Johnson, Senior Minister, Independent Presbyterian Church

"With engaging style, Heralds of the Reformation vividly portrays the outpouring of the Spirit of God as men, women and children rediscovered salvation by God's grace alone through faith alone in Christ." -Ron Bergey, Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament, John Calvin Seminary

HOW TO MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE FOR LIFE: From One Verse to Entire Books
ANDREW DAVIES

A Simple, Proven Method for Memorizing Long Passages of Scripture

When God’s word abides in believers, it overflows with blessings for everyday life. Many Christians have individual Scripture verses “stored up” in their hearts, but there can be even greater spiritual benefit to memorizing long passages—even entire books—of the Bible. Unfortunately, this is often dismissed as impossible or too time consuming.

Andrew M. Davis helps readers commit to extended Scripture memorization so they may grow in holiness, resist temptation, and share the gospel with others. In this brief guide, he offers an accessible, time-tested pattern for studying Scripture that includes simple daily procedures and tips for long-term retention. By building up a storehouse of biblical truth in their hearts, readers will strengthen their prayer life and intimacy with Christ as they prepare to share God’s truth with others.

ENDORSEMENTS

“I cannot recommend this book highly enough! I wish that every Christian would read this book and do what it says, because I am confident that doing so would transform our lives, families, churches, and the world around us for our good and God’s glory in ways far beyond what we could ask or imagine.” David Platt, Pastor, McLean Bible Church, McLean, Virginia; Founder, Radical; author, Don’t Hold Back

“This may prove to be the most important book you read this year. For if you put it into practice, you will find yourself on a long-term course of Scripture memorization that will fructify your mind and heart for the rest of your life, and for all eternity.” D.A. Carson, Theologian-at-Large, The Gospel Coalition

“I recall listening spellbound to the testimony of a missionary who had recently been freed from prison in a country closed to gospel work and notoriously brutal in its treatment of Christians. Regularly beaten, often deprived of sleep, food, and water, this brother spent more than a year alone in a tiny cell. How did he survive emotionally and spiritually? He testified that it was Scripture that strengthened him and reminded him that he was never alone. Yet, he had no written copy of God’s word. Instead, it was the words written on his mind and heart that carried him, the words he had committed to memory over his years as a disciple. In How to Memorize Scripture for Life, Andy Davis emphasizes the vital importance of Scripture memorization for obedience to the teachings of God’s word and for growth as a disciple. He also provides practical instruction on how to carry out the Bible’s explicit admonitions and encouragements toward memorization of its teachings. In our day, when retained knowledge has been replaced by an online search engine and the discipline of memorization largely forsaken, Davis’s book is a gift to the church. Whether we are alone in a prison cell, standing to deliver a carefully prepared sermon, or doing the hard work of discipling a young believer, the Scriptures we have committed to memory will be the voice of God speaking to us and through us for his glory, our good, and the advance of the gospel.” Paul Chitwood, President, International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention

“I love Andy Davis and his Scripture-soaked ministry. In this book, he reveals his ‘secret’ behind a lost art in Christian circles—Scripture memorization. He is the right guy to write this book. He loves the Scripture, and he bleeds God’s word in how he preaches, encourages, and talks. Reading this book will make you love the Scripture more too. Davis will show you how to get it in your mind and heart in ways that will transform your life.” J.D. Greear, Pastor, The Summit Church, Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina

“Andy Davis is my Scripture memory hero. He is a devoted husband and father of a large family. He pastors a large church. He writes books. And yet somehow in the midst of his busy life he has managed to memorize (at this writing) nearly the entire Bible. This little book contains his secret. It is life-changing.” - Donald S. Whitney, Professor of Biblical Spirituality and Associate Dean, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life; Praying the Bible; and Family Worship

“How to Memorize Scripture for Life is soul repair for the weary, battle armor for the war-torn, and a lifeline for backsliders. May the Lord use Andy Davis’s life-changing book to raise up a generation of Christians who defy the trendy lies of the devil with the word hidden in their hearts. All Christians should read this book and practice its wise counsel.” - Rosaria Butterfield, former Professor of English and Women’s Studies, Syracuse University; author, The Gospel Comes with a Housekey and Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age

“Memorizing Scripture takes you deeper in your walk with the Lord and makes you better prepared to point others toward him. There are no shortcuts, but my friend Andy Davis has outlined some principles and suggestions that will help get you started and keep you on track in this profoundly rewarding journey.” - Kevin Ezell, President, North American Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention

“When many of us think of Andy Davis, we think of Scripture memory. Memorizing whole books of the Bible has been momentous for the whole of his Christian life and pastoral ministry, and he has long been a contagious and capable advocate for others doing the same. But perhaps even more impressive, when many of us think of Scripture memory, we think of Andy Davis. Few voices today, if any, rise so clearly to the top as both skilled teachers and practitioners of such an eternally significant topic.” - David Mathis, Senior Teacher and Executive Editor, desiringGod. org; Pastor, Cities Church, Saint Paul, Minnesota; author, Habits of Grace

“Andy Davis is one of the most disciplined men I’ve ever met. So when I learned that he had much of the Bible memorized, I was not surprised. Still, I decided to quiz him. True to form, he went through the Scriptures from memory in a way that made me want to know Scripture like that! What you hold in your hand is what Davis has learned throughout a lifetime of Scripture memory. I can attest that it is helpful. So if you’ve wanted to memorize Scripture in larger portions and in a manner that you will remember, pick up this book and get to work.” - Juan R. Sanchez, Senior Pastor, High Pointe Baptist Church, Austin, Texas; author, Seven Dangers Facing Your Church

THE SHORTER CATECHISM ILLUSTRATED: From Christian History and Biography
John Whitecross

"This unusual volume follows the doctrinal structure of the classic Puritan catechism, expanding each doctrinal point not with exposition, as is customary, but with many factual stories well selected by the author from a wide range of sources. Thus such subjects as Providence, Prayer and The Ten Commandments are illuminated with telling and sometimes fascinating narratives. First published in 1828, and passing through many editions in the last century, the book has been revised for greater usefulness today.

SAMPLES:

Matthew Henry, a little before his death, said to a friend, "You have been accustomed to take notice of the sayings of dying men: this is mine, That a life spent in the service of God, and in communion with Him, is the most comfortable and pleasant life that any one can live in this world."

A Polish prince was accustomed to carry the picture of his father always in his bosom; and on particular occasions used to take it out and view it, saying, "Let me do nothing unbecoming so excellent a father." A suitable reflection for a Christian!

The punctuality of John Newton, while tide-surveyor at Liverpool, was particularly remarked. One day, however, some business had detained him, and he came to his boat much later than usual, to the surprise of those who had observed his former punctuality. He went out in the boat as heretofore, to inspect a ship, but by some accident the ship blew up just before he reached it; and it appears, that if he had left the shore a few minutes sooner, he must have perished with the rest on board.

It was remarked by one, 'If I have been honored to do any good in my day; if I have been of any use to the church of Christ, to my family, and to my fellow-creatures; if I have enjoyed any happiness in life (and I am happy to say I have had a large share); if I have any hope beyond the grave, and that hope I would not exchange for a thousand worlds-I owe all to the Bible.'

In the Memoirs of Thomas Boston of Ettrick appears the following: Singing at family worship Psalm 121, this view of the Bible was given me, namely, that whatever were the particular occasions of the writing of it or any part thereof, I am to look upon it as written for me as much as if there were not another person in the world, and so is everybody else to whose hand it comes.'

Sometimes there were more kings than one in Sparta, who governed by joint authority. A king was occasionally sent to some neighbouring senate in the character of a Spartan ambassador. Did he, when so sent, cease to be a king of Sparta, because he was also an ambassador? No; he did not divest himself of his regal dignity, but only added to it that of public deputation. So Christ, in becoming man, did not cease to be God; but though He ever was, and still continued to be, King of the whole creation, He acted as the voluntary servant and messenger of the Father.

Among the many whom George Whitefield was honored to be the means of converting to the knowledge and love of the truth, and who will be a crown of joy to him in the day of the Lord, it is perhaps not generally known that the celebrated James Hervey is to be mentioned. In a letter to Whitefield, Hervey expresses himself thus: 'Your journals, dear sir, and sermons, especially that sweet sermon on What think ye of Christ? were the means of bringing me to the knowledge of the truth.'

David Dickson, once Professor of Divinity in Edinburgh, being asked, when on his deathbed, how he found himself answered, "I have taken my good deeds and bad deeds, and thrown them together in a heap, and fled from them both to Christ, and in Him I have peace."

John Whitecross, a schoolmaster, knew well what would gain the attention of the young and the book can be recommended for children of ten and over; it will also be of general interest to all readers and a valuable treasury of illustrative matter for the many in the home, school or church who have the responsibility of making Biblical teaching interesting.

BE THOU MY VISION: A Liturgy for Daily Worship
JONATHAN GIBSON

Every Christian knows the importance of a daily quiet time with the Lord. But anyone who’s been a believer long enough has likely experienced seasons that feel more mundane or routine, leading to aimlessly skimming a couple of Bible verses or praying the same prayer over and over.

In Be Thou My Vision, Jonathan Gibson has created a 31-day liturgical guide designed to provide structure to the daily worship of individuals and families. Each daily reading includes a call to worship, adoration, confession, assurance, creed and catechism, the Gloria Patri, a prayer of illumination, Bible reading, intercessory prayer, and the Lord’s Prayer. Designed to be read in 15–20 minutes a day, this beautifully produced liturgy will give readers focus and purpose to their daily quiet time while teaching them historical prayers, creeds, and catechisms that point them to Christ.

ENDORESMENTS

“Jonny has gifted us with a project not only of theological and historical retrieval but also, more deeply, retrieval of our own hearts, often wayward and wandering, distracted and distressed. This simple but rich liturgy takes our hearts and leads them back to the Lord with pastoral care and theological integrity. A deeply edifying and useful guide.” -Dane C. Ortlund, Senior Pastor, Naperville Presbyterian Church; author, Gentle and Lowly and Deeper

“We believers sometimes stumble our way through the steps of spiritual devotion, especially in private or family worship. This liturgy for daily worship lets us hold the well-tested handrails of faithful worshipers, carved out deeply and well to help us on. Creeds, prayers, catechisms, hymns, and, most of all, God’s breathed-out word lead us profitably and beautifully to worship the triune God in spirit and in truth. I look forward to using and sharing this book.” -Kathleen Nielson, author; speaker

“To use the rich traditions of biblical worship such as prayers, confessions of faith, catechisms, Scripture readings, praise, and more conveys a remarkable freshness in the context of personal worship. Gibson guides you through each of these elements in a thirty-one-day cycle, and provides a familiar one-year Bible-reading plan. With some adjustments it can also serve as a family worship resource. All in all, Be Thou My Vision is perhaps the best, and certainly the most thorough and meaty, daily devotional guide I’ve ever read.” -Donald S. Whitney, Professor of Biblical Spirituality and Associate Dean, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Family Worship; Praying the Bible; and Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life

“What if you took thirty-one days and enveloped your Bible reading in a cocoon of riches? Make no mistake—this book is not a replacement for the living and active word of God. But how might it deepen and enliven your morning meditation to lead into it and out of it by drawing on centuries of wisdom? Both the sequence and the carefully crafted prayers and creeds will freshly inform your mind and stir your heart. This is not a book of shortcuts for those looking to abbreviate their time in God’s word. These daily liturgies invite us to give more for a season and hold out the promise of great reward. How might God renovate your soul in these thirty-one days?” -David Mathis, Senior Teacher and Executive Editor, desiringGod.org; Pastor, Cities Church, Saint Paul, Minnesota; author, Habits of Grace

“When it comes to daily personal worship, Christians are finding it harder to stay disciplined in today’s swipe-scroll-click-search-tap culture. Many have lost the art of staying focused. In the meantime, our souls cry out for authentic worship that lasts more than two minutes. It’s why the book you hold in your hands is so necessary. I love this book! Having been raised in the Reformed Episcopal church, I enjoy the rhythms of liturgical adoration of God in all its depth, discipline, and exaltation of the word. Be Thou My Vision will educate you in personal worship that is truly worthy of our great God. I highly recommend this important guide for your personal devotions.” -Joni Eareckson Tada, Founder, Joni and Friends International Disability Center

“Jonny Gibson is helping a new generation of Christian believers and pastors find language and structure that will enrich their daily devotional life and weekly worship services. I personally find Be Thou My Vision both helpful and inspiring, and warmly commend it to all.” -Keith Getty, hymn writer

“What a go-to source this volume will be for both individual devotion and family worship, with its carefully arranged daily liturgy featuring select Scripture readings, prayers culled from church history, luminous sections of the creeds and confessions, plus the ringing lyrics of sacred hymnody. Those who take the time for an appropriation of the measured riches and disciplines of this book will experience an intensification of worship that will fill their existence. We believe that Be Thou My Vision will grace today’s church and generations to come!” -Kent and Barbara Hughes, Senior Pastor Emeritus, College Church, Wheaton; authors, Disciplines of a Godly Man and Disciplines of a Godly Woman

The Poor Man's New Testament Commentary
ROBERT HAWKER

The prayerful 'reflections' section that follows Hawker's comments on each chapter of Scripture marvelously enhances this devotional character. For the genuine Christian, here is devotional writing at its best: warmly Christ-centered, eminently practical, personally searching. I commend it highly for private and family worship." - Joel Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, MI

TASTE A SAMPLE OF HAWKER'S 'REFLECTIONS' WHICH CLOSE EVERY CHAPTER IN THE BIBLE

On Exodus 15 - "Reader! In the contemplation of this deliverance to Israel, shall not you and I, while we consider it as a type of a far greater deliverance from sin and everlasting death, call upon our souls to join in the celebration of God's mercies? I would say to the drowsy faculties of my heart, Awake, awake, utter a song. Did the Lord bring his people out of Egyptian bondage, and did Israel sing his mercies at the Red sea, and shall not I, whom he hath brought out of nature's darkness, and out of the bondage of sin and Satan, shout alike the Salvation of the Lord! Oh! thou blessed and only Potentate, King of Kings, and Lord of Lord's: thou infinite and eternal Jehovah, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: fain would my awakened soul look up to thee, under each and all of those glorious distinctions of person, and power, and praise thee with unfeigned lips. Thou hast indeed, as thou didst to Israel of old, brought me out of the iron furnace, out of the horrible pit, the mire, and the clay, and hast set my feet upon a rock and established my goings: hast put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: so that many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

But blessed Lord! Oh grant me faith, and grace, in full exercise, that in all the after stages of a wilderness dispensation, whether in the sweet enjoyment of Palm trees at Elim, or the bitter waters of affliction at Marah, I may still by living upon thee and thy fulness, be never cast down in unbelief, and repining in the emptiness, or unsatisfying nature, of all creature enjoyments. Oh! lead me on to Canaan: and till the happy hour shall come when I shall have done with all things here below, enable me by faith, amidst all changing providences, to live upon an unchangeable God. Let faith give me a present enjoyment of the good things to come. Let me see Jesus in everything; and his wisdom, and love, and faithfulness, mingled with every dispensation. And let my experience resemble his of old, who thus expressed himself: For this cause we faint not: while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal."

On Luke 23 - "See, my soul! thy Lord taken from prison and from judgment. And who shall declare his generations? Behold Pilate, Herod, the Chief Priests, and Scribes, yea, the whole multitude, all engaged in the foul act of Christ's crucifixion. And was there none beside? Think, my soul! how much thy sins, both in the original and actual transgression of thine Adam-nature, added to the vast account. Oh! for grace, that in a conscious sense of my own sins, upon this solemn occasion, I may look unto him whom I have pierced, and mourn, as one that mourneth for his only son; and be in bitterness, as one that is in bitterness for his first born!

Precious Jesus! enable me to connect with the solemn view of thine unequalled sufferings, that thou hast made my peace by the blood of thy cross, and by thy stripes I am healed. And from the cross enable me to behold thee proclaiming peace to all thy people, and doing away, the whole of sin by the sacrifice of thyself. Yes! thou Almighty Lord! truly, in the instance of the dying thief, thou hast shewn the sovereign efficacy of thy finished salvation. Here may poor, despairing, self-condemned, and self-condemning sinners, find the sweetest encouragement. And, if Jesus in the days of his flesh offered up strong crying and tears, and was heard in that he feared, will he not have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way, since he himself was thus compassed with infirmity?

Lord! I would take my stand at the door of the sepulchre. Like Mary, I would wait in humble sorrow until my risen and triumphant Savior shall speak to me, as the Lord did to that poor woman. Oh! for grace, to have the first views of Jesus, the first love tokens as she had of Jews, that I might hasten with the same tender commission, and tell the brethren of Jesus of the glorious tidings of the resurrection. Lord! give me the assured earnest, in a resurrection of grace, for that great day of my God, when all his redeemed will partake in a resurrection to glory!"

ADVICE TO A YOUNG CHRISTIAN
On the Importance of Aiming at an Elevated Standard of Piety
Jared B. Waterbury with Introductory Essay by Archibald Alexander

This was originally released in 1827 by an anonymous author simply called A Village Pastor with an outstanding Introductory Essay by Archibald Alexander. It went on to be one of the best selling books by the American Tract Society. It was also published in the UK by the Religious Tract Society of London where it became very popular.

"Years ago, my wife 'found an old book' for me at a flea market. It was an 1843 printing of ADVICE TO A YOUNG CHRISTIAN On the Importance of Aiming at an Elevated Standard of Piety by a Village Pastor. (The title alone is instructive!) Since that day, I have loved this sweet little volume and have hoped someone would reprint it! It has often been useful to me as a devotional prod toward my own spiritual duties. I've read snippets in family worship and in prayer meetings, and I've shared portions with guests around the table on Lord's Day afternoons. Originally penned as private letters by a pastor to a young woman in his charge, these brief chapters are striking in the warm and winsome care that the writer shows for the eternal prosperity of his young reader. Fellow pastors will also be challenged by the extent of this man's effort toward the well being of a single young lamb, 'until Christ be formed' in her (Gal. 4:19). May these very pastoral encouragements once again achieve the author's 'ardent prayer' that they may comfort and edify many." - Pastor Murray Wilson, Trinity Reformed Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD

"To the lambs of Christ's flock, whom Peter was enjoined by the Good Shepherdf to feed, I dedicate this little book. The letters which compose it were written to instruct one of their number, the daughter of a highly valued friend. Since they are now made public, it is the ardent prayer of the author, that they may comfort and edify many more." - the Author

"The following letters are well calculated to turn the attention of the Christian public to the importance of diligence and punctuality in performing the duties of the closet. They were forwarded to me by an esteemed young clergyman, who is settled as a pastor in a distant and retired village. These letters are seasonable, judicious, and pious, and that as they are written in an animated style they will be extensively perused by the young." - Archilbald Alexander

THE CHILD'S PREACHER: A Series of Sermons on Systematic Theology for the Young
Alexander Fletcher, J.C. Ryle, John Crawshaw, Lyman A. Eddy, and Lowther J. Barrington with Introductory Lesson by C.H. Spurgeon

"THESE ARE SOLID AND EDIFYING, AND AT THE SAME TIME VIVACIOUS AND LIFE-LIKE ADDRESSES." -the Editor

Every family should have a copy of this marvelous volume of over 450 pages containing 33 sermons intended for the instruction of the heart and mind of children within the household and the church. Alexander Fletcher (1787-1860) was known as "the Children's Friend" and the man chosen to perform the marriage of Charles Haddon Spurgeon and Susannah Thompson. John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) was the gifted Bishop of Liverpool and author of numerous books, including his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, intended to be used for Family Worship. Although not as well-known, Revs. Lowther Barrington, John Crawshaw, and Lyman A. Eddy were also men gifted and faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and especially concerned about the sound instruction of the little lambs of Christ's flock.

The Editor wrote the following in his Preface: "One important object of the present volume is to furnish practical hints, which may serve to encourage yonng ministers, and others who imagine it a difficult thing to preach to children, to make the attempt more frequently. It will be found that the variety of texts and subjects which may be adapted to children's capacities is almost endless.

The great requisites, in order to interest children, are plainness of speech and fertility of illustration. When these are employed, low and silly expressions are worse than useless, and trifling thoughts and foolish imaginations are a positive offense. It is perfectly practicable to adapt every essential, or strictly important religious topic, not only to the capacity, but even to the tastes of children; yea, to interest them deeply in such suhjects, and at the same time to preserve dignity of expression and purity of thought. How vastly important, therefore, is it for every minister to qualify himself for, and to habituate himself to, preaching the Gospel to children."

Rev. Lowther Barrington, preacher of the opening sermon of the book, was the author of a book by the same title. Of that book we are told, "These are a series of little sermons to children, delivered at a separate service instituted for them. They are, in our opinion, quite perfect in their way: we can hardly lay down the volume. Let all mothers by all means get this little tome, and read it to their children."

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC IN PUBLIC WORSHIP
John Girardeau with Introduction by R.L. Dabney

"It is often forgotten that the use of musical instruments in the church's worship is a comparatively recent development among Presbyterians and Baptists, and that it was opposed by Calvin, the Westminster Assembly, Owen and the other Puritans, Gill and Spurgeon, as being out of accord with the simplicity of gospel worship under the new covenant. Girardeau's book is a standard defense of the Puritan view, examining the grounds for discerning what is carried over from the Old Testament and what is not." - Sherman Isbell

The book opens with the following Statement of the Question:

"In the discussion of the question, Whether the use of instrumental music in the worship of the church is permissible or not, it must be premised:

First, that the question is not in regard to private or family worship, or to that of social gatherings which are not ecclesiastical in their nature, nor with reference to the utility or tastefulness of instrumental music, nor in relation to the abuse to which it may be liable; but,

Secondly, the question is precisely, Is the use of instrumental music in the public worship of the church justifiable? The design of this discussion is, with the help of the divine Spirit, to prove the negative."

In the Introduction to this new edition of Girardeau's classic R.L. Dabney states:

"The author in his eloquent conclusion anticipates that some will meet his arguments with sneers rather than serious discussion, which he proposes to endure with Christian composure. It is a reproach to our church, which fills us with grief, to find this prediction fulfilled in some quarters. Surely persons calling themselves Presbyterians should remember that the truths they profess to hold sacred have usually been in small minorities sneered at by the arrogant majorities. So it was in the days of the Reformers, of Athanasius, of the Apostles, and of Jesus himself."

FAMILY WORSHIP FOR THE REFORMATION SEASON
Ray Rhodes, Jr.

"Imagine, leading your family in daily worship in the home, reading the Scriptures, singing and praying, but simultaneously introducing them to the history, leading figures and theology of the great sixteenth-century Reformation - all this in a fresh and interesting way, in just about a quarter of an hour each day. 'That would be great,' you say, 'but it would take me hours and days to put that together. I could never do it.' Well, Ray Rhodes has done it for you in Family Worship for the Reformation Season. Use this book with joy. It will inspire, inform and instruct you and your family. The studies are simple but meaty. The Scriptures passages are helpfully chosen. And most of the lessons can be completed in fifteen minutes. Employ and be edified!" - Dr. Ligon Duncan

"Many today have called our increasingly secular age the beginning of 'a new dark ages'. Others see our climate as a time similar to that which birthed the Reformation - a time when the light of God's Word broke through the abiding spiritual darkness - becoming one characterized by the production and proliferation of the Scriptures. Thus, the latter was a movement from a visual-based society to a word-based society. Toward this end, Ray Rhodes provides us with a much-needed tool for our families to return to God's Word, understand our heritage, and be equipped to perpetuate this faith to the generations to come. You have all you need in this book to teach your family how to celebrate the Reformation season!" - Pastor Jerry Marcellino

"Once common, the practice of family worship has all but disappeared among the people of God today. Recent years, however, have seen a revival of interest in and commitment to this biblical responsibility and privilege. Ray Rhodes has contributed to the recovery of this resurgence with practical books like this one. Informative and useful at any time of year, this book would be particularly timely in the weeks leading up to Reformation Day." - Dr. Donald Whitney

"This book combines two divine blessings that are being rediscovered by a growing number of Christians in our day--our Reformation heritage and family worship. Ray Rhodes has performed a great service to families by organizing useful information about the former in ways that can be easily used in the latter. I pray that this book will be used to teach the rising generation important biblical truths through the stories of faithful men and women on whose shoulders we stand." - Dr. Tom Ascol, Pastor

"From the pen of author, pastor, conference speaker and book dealer Ray Rhodes comes yet another gem: a month of studies for the Reformation season geared for family worship. If you long to know more about this pivotal time in church history, yet you have felt intimidated by the subject matter, then get this book. You will learn, your family will learn--and you just might have a lot of fun as well." - Dr. David W. Bailey, Pastor

Following a similar format to our best-selling book of 2007, 'Family Worship for the Christmas Season', this book is intended to be used from October 1 - 31, with the grand climax being Reformation Day. At the same time, this book can be used at any time of the year. It is both informative and practical.

FAMILY WORSHIP FOR THE THANKSGIVING SEASON
Ray Rhodes, Jr.

This is the third in our ongoing and growing series of volumes intended to assist families in their joyful duty of Family Worship.

"Over 40 million Americans will travel fifty or more miles during the Thanksgiving holiday to visit with family and friends. With the growth of America, since its' founding, has also come the scattering of families across the land. Thanksgiving Day calls families to journey 'over the river and through the wood' to sit around the table, enjoy a meal and remember days gone by. In the homes of Christians, Thanksgiving serves as another opportunity to recount the faithfulness of God and to give Him thanks.

I pray that this book will be a help to you as you lead your family to worship God.

Each day includes a Scripture reading, historical glimpse and theological thought. Read these sections with your family and consider adding a hymn and prayer of thanksgiving as a part of your regular family worship activities." -Ray Rhodes, Jr.

"What a complete joy it is to offer my blessing and recommendation of Ray Rhodes', newest book, Family Worship for the Thanksgiving Season. Ray has given us a doxological feast of 31 creative lessons which offer the fruit of both an informed mind and enflamed heart. The beauty of Ray's writing may only be surpassed by the beauty of his family--the precious community in which our brother has invested so much of his heart and cultivated his tremendous love for the gospel and God's people. Not only your Thanksgiving season, but your entire year will be enriched by highly accessible and Biblically faithful reflections." Scotty Smith, Pastor for Preaching, Teaching and Worship Christ Community Church, Franklin TN, Author of Unveiled Hope, with Michael Card; Speechless, with Steven Curtis Chapman; Objects of His Affection; The Reign of Grace; and Restoring Broken Things, with Steven Curtis Chapman

"Ray Rhodes has provided another devotional gem that families who want to worship God in their homes will find useful. Though Thanksgiving tends to be more about travel, sporting events and food than about genuine gratitude to our Creator, the very name of the holiday provides an opportunity to stop and reflect on God's goodness. This book is an excellent guide in remembering God's mercies that are provided in the gospel while taking note of His kind providence in the history of America. Use it to stir up thanksgiving in your home as Thanksgiving approaches on your calendar." - Dr. Tom Ascol, Executive Director Founders Ministries

"After reading this latest work by Ray Rhodes, I have never been more convinced that God has uniquely called him to write on Family Worship for our generation. His genuine burden is contagious and is being embraced by many at this needy hour. Could there be a better time in our nation's history for a Christian and his family to learn afresh or revisit the early moments of our nationÆs founding? Enter into the world of Pilgrim America. Relive that first Thanksgiving season. Follow our forefathers from Holland to Cape Cod. Then, emulate their faith. Pass it on to your children. And pray for God's mercy upon the USA." - Pastor Jerry Marcellino, Audubon Drive Bible Church, Laurel, Mississippi.

"In Family Worship for the Thanksgiving Season Ray Rhodes has provided families with a roadmap to thankfulness that includes some unique treasures not found in similar works. The combination of historic treasures that any Father or Mother can share with their children, in addition to theological pillars of our historic, Christian faith, each day is highlighted with a pertinent Scripture verse that ties it all together. This combination of Scripture, theology and history is rooted in our American tradition and heritage. Some works on the family tend to idolize the institution, thus making family the center of everything. Not so with Ray, for the family is set in its proper context of providing the foundation for character and devotion destined to bless both church and community through serving others and not indulging in self-gratification. This book will add another dimension to a family's knowledge and appreciation of our Thanksgiving tradition from the Pilgrims to the present day proclamations of Presidents who honored our forefathers. I highly recommend Family Worship!"- Dr. Paul Jehle, Senior Pastor, The New Testament Church, Plymouth, MA

COME YE APART: A Daily Devotional Journey Through the Four Gospels of our Lord Jesus Christ
J.R. Miller

A daily devotional journey through the life of Christ as recorded in all four Gospels. This daily devotional would be a great gift for your Sunday School Teacher, your favorite missionary, your children, your parents or yourself. In Miller's own words: "This volume of a year's readings has been prepared in the hope that it may prove daily food to some earnest children of God in their life of care, struggle, and duty. It is made to cover the earthly life of our Lord, from its beginning to its close... The author's aim has been to put a life-thought on each page... The book has but a single aim: to honor and glorify Christ in the eyes of those who follow its pages."

"If any 19th century American Christian writer warrants reprinting, it is J.R. Miller! His writing style is delightfully smooth, his insights are spiritual diamonds on every page, and his pastoral applications are delivered with the skill of a well-seasoned physician of souls." - Pastor Bill Shishko of Franklin Square, NY

"This book is a calendar for devotional reading. At the top of each page is a verse of Scripture, and the texts chosen are made to cover the earthly life of out Lord. The readings which follow each text are intended to be neither exegetical nor expository, but practical and promotive of a devotional spirit. They are exceedingly full of suggestions to duty, and encouragements to a holy life. It is a good book to take into one's 'inner chamber' as a help to to devout meditation upon the words of our Savior." - New England and Yale Review

THOUGHTS ON FAMILY WORSHIP, HEAVEN OPENED, HEART TREASURES, A TREATISE ON EARTHLY-MINDEDNESS, THE BEST MATCH, THE TRUE CHRISTIAN'S LOVE TO THE UNSEEN CHRIST
Alexander, Alleine, Heyward, Burroughs, Pearce & Vincent

The Puritans considered the family as "a little church," and the father as its pastor. It was his duty to oversee and shepherd his flock. In our day, the idea of a family gathering together for worship is virtually unkown, save for a few isolated pockets where this wonderful tradition is being carried on in spite of the demands of a world that seeks our time, our attention, and our focus. As families get busier with sports, school activites, church activities, and recreation, this book calls us back to a long-forgotten priority: that of worshipping God in the home as well as the church.

A classic book on the importance of an often-neglected duty, Thoughts on Family Worship by James W. Alexander focuses on the many benefits of daily worship as it strengthens minds and cultivates personal piety among both parents and children. The author further shows how family worship influences our churches and society, perpetuating sound doctrine and leaving a legacy for posterity.

Alexander provides practical directions for conducting family worship, discussing in detail such things as the place of Scripture reading, prayer, and praise. He is aware, however, of the difficulties of maintaining family worship and answers several common objections to it.

If you struggle to hold times of worship with your family, or even if you simply desire some encouragement in the practice, this book is sure to provide the words of counsel you need.

A THEOLOGY OF THE FAMILY: Five Centuries of Biblical Wisdom for the Family Life

This book presents a perspective on the family largely forgotten by the modern church. There are fifty-six authors featured in this volume; authors such as: John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards, John Gill, William Gouge, Matthew Henry, Martin Luther, A.W. Pink, J. C. Ryle, R. C. Sproul, Charles Spurgeon and Thomas Watson. Each of them give a powerful testimony that the twenty-first-century church needs to be reminded of what she used to believe about family life. A FAMILY WORSHIP BIBLE COMMENTARY
Various Authors, Arnot, Bannerman, Bonar, Chalmers, Cunningham, Fairbairn, Hawker, M'Cheyne, Whyte and many more

The Family Worship Bible Commentary is a collection of family worship-style devotions on every chapter of the Bible, by over 180 authors from the 19th century Church. These men were mostly Presbyterians, but all were Reformed. They include names such as William Arnot, Thomas Chalmers, James Bannerman, Patrick Fairbairn, Robert Hawker, Thomas Guthrie, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, Alexander Whyte, Job Orton, Robert Shittler, Daniel Dewar, and others. These men inspired a generation of fathers to bring their families daily before the living God to worship, to pray, and to hear His Word read. Whether you are a father who wishes to read these devotions aloud to his family, or simply to read them ahead of time and glean the main teaching points from them; this work will provide you with a treasure trove of devotional thoughts and comments for your family worship time. Any family would do well to read through the Bible with these godly men by their side, guiding them along as they walk 'through the Scriptures with our forefathers.'

'The Family Worship Bible Commentary is packed with a veritable treasure of intellectually stimulating and spiritually rich material designed for family reading and worship but is equally suitable for private worship. We are in Andrew Camp’s debt for bringing all of this valuable material together, and pray that God’s rich blessings may rest upon it also for your family. Heartily recommended!' -Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

'Anything that can encourage the practice of daily family worship is worthy of support. These volumes are especially helpful in that they not only take a family through the whole Bible but also provide the richest spiritual fare in the accompanying devotionals. Use daily to transform your family’s lives and even their eternity.' -David Murray

"The Nineteenth Century Scots were zealous to reinvigorate the whole field of Reformed faith and practice. This included the revitalizing of Family Worship, a mainstay of Reformed Protestants since the 16th Century. Contributors to the Family Worship Bible Commentary include such Presbyterian luminaries as Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847), James Bannerman (1807-1868), William Cunningham (1805-1861), Robert Murray M'Cheyne (1813-1843), and Alexander Whyte (1836-1921). The revival of family-centered Christian devotion and family-based instruction is one of the great needs in our environment today of aggressive secularism. We are indebted to Andrew Camp for rescuing from the church attic this rich product of the past, dusting it off, and making it available to our families today." -Pastor Terry Johnson, Independent Presbyterian Church, Savannah, Georgia; Author of 'The Family Worship Book'

"I thank the Lord for Andrew Camp for his labors to bring back these treasures for family worship in the 'Family Worship Bible Commentary.' When a family has been instructed in the 'whole counsel of God,' the impact is enormous. I pray that God would give our generation a revival of families who journey through the entire Bible year after year and that they will be able to mine this treasure trove as they do." -Scott Brown, President, National Center for Family-Integrated Churches

This large double volume work has stood as a classic since the day it appeared. Trench shows great wisdom and restraint in expounding both the parables and miracles of our Lord. Trench would agree with B.B. Warfield, that "all Christ's miracles were parables."

(2) Messages of the Word by Minister of the Reformed Church of America (1912) edited by James Zwemer

16 powerful sermons from 16 ministers of the Reformed Church in 1912. Compiled and edited by James Zwemer, with sermons from Beardslee, Vennema, Kuizenga, Samuel Zwemer, Van der Meulen.

(3) Fundamental Christianity by Francis Patton

These messages were the substance of the James Sprunt Lectures in 1924 at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. They address the following themes: The Theistic View of the World, The Seat of Authority in Religion, The New Christianity, The Person of Christ and Pauline Theology. At Princeton Seminary, J. Gresham Machen was mentored by theologian Francis L. Patton (1843-1932). Later, Machen wrote about Patton's helpfulness in his intellectual struggles: "Never did a doubter and a struggler have a better friend than I did in this wonderfully eloquent and brilliant man."
