COMMENTARY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT: Verse-by-Verse Explanations w/ a Literal Translation
ROBERT H. GUNDRY

A LARGE TWO VOLUME COMMENTARY ON EVERY VERSE IN THE ENTIRE NEW TESTAMENT.

Shouldn't a Bible commentary clarify what God's Word actually says? Going beyond questions of authorship, date, sources, and historicity, respected linguist and teacher Gundry offers a one-volume exposition of the New Testament that focuses on what is most useful for preaching, teaching, and individual study--what the biblical text really means. Providing interpretive observations in a "breezy" style that's easy to read and adaptable for oral use in pulpit or classroom presentations, Gundry directs his book to an evangelical audience. His crisp translation of the New Testament inserts various phrasings of passages in brackets, allowing for smooth transition from original text to alternative and contemporary readings.

ENDORSEMENTS

"This is a great resource in a great format for a great purpose from a great scholar. Bob Gundry has been a treasure for people who love the Bible for many years, and this is one of his richest gifts to us yet." -John Ortberg, author and senior pastor of Menlo Church, California

"Like having a wonderful tour guide to a foreign country, Gundry's study of the New Testament introduces and guides one through the many joys and causes for reflection that are a part of a trip through the New Testament. The guidance provided is judicious in its choices of what to comment on and skilled in its presentation of the key ideas. It will surely serve well those who use it." -Darrell Bock, executive director of cultural engagement and senior research professor of New Testament studies, Dallas Theological Seminary

"There is no better single-volume commentary on the New Testament than the one Bob Gundry has written. It offers succinct, fast-paced commentary, yet without neglecting the important points of interpretation. Busy pastors, students, laity, and even veteran scholars will find much in this commentary to appreciate. It belongs in every library and study." -Craig A. Evans, John Bisagno Distinguished Professor of Christian Origins, Houston Baptist University

"This is not just another ho-hum commentary, the product of someone reading and repackaging previous commentaries. This is rather the fruit of a lifetime of close, intense attention to the text of the Greek New Testament; the upshot is that one happily finds on every page of this exegetical treasure fresh readings and independent judgments." -Dale C. Allison Jr., Richard J. Dearborn Professor of New Testament Studies, Princeton Theological Seminary

"Gundry's magnum opus culminates the life's work of one of our generation's preeminent New Testament scholars. The weight of this commentary is matched by the substance of Gundry's interpretation within its pages, reflecting his lifetime of scholarship. This one-volume commentary on the New Testament is a rare accomplishment that must find a place on the bookshelf of every serious preacher, teacher, and student of Scripture." -Karen H. Jobes, Gerald F. Hawthorne Professor of New Testament Greek and Exegesis, Emerita, Wheaton College and Graduate School

REVIEWS

"Gundry distills decades of scholarly experience in working paragraph-by-paragraph through the New Testament--focusing on the divinely inspired human author's meaning with an eye to modern-day explication of the passage. . . . Gundry writes in a clear, engaging style and demonstrates a wealth of knowledge. I think it very likely that I will refer to th[ese] book[s] in the future--especially when I am looking for a respected New Testament scholar's concise opinion on a thorny text. . . . I commend this work as containing many helpful reflections on the New Testament from a highly respected scholar." -Robert L. Plummer, Southern Baptist Journal of Theology

"Commentary on the New Testament is an exegetical achievement. It comprises a digest of the life-long labors of a careful and seasoned student of the NT. As such, it deserves a place on the shelves of serious students of the Scripture. In a day when many commentaries offer the reader parvum in multo (very little content in many words), it is refreshing to see a work that offers multum in parvo (much content in a few words). . . . Gundry's Commentary will richly repay the reader." -Guy Prentiss Waters, Themelios

The New York Pulpit During The Prayer Revival of 1858: A Memorial Volume of Sermons
J.W. Alexander, Theodore Cuyler, George Bethune, Edward Hiscox, William Adams and 20 More

"Donated from heaven were wonderfully spiritual and talented gospel preachers in New York who ministered in the years of revival in that great metropolis around the time of 1858. Reader, will it be your privilege to witness times of spiritual refreshing? Will you live to see times of harvesting? If so this book of expository sermons preached in revival times will be a valuable companion. But if you are called to labour on in drought and begin to think that revival is a delusion then these sermons will sustain your faith and refresh you. There is unction from heaven in these expositions. Especially commended are the sermons on Ezekiel 36:37-38, Malachi 3:16, Ezekiel 18:31, Revelation 3:20, Ecclesiastes 8:8, Matthew 22:13 and Mark 12:24-28. The sermon entitled, 'Past Feeling' is awesome." -Pastor Erroll Hulse, Reformation today magazine and Leeds Reformed Baptist Church (U.K.)

"The [ORIGINAL] publishers of this volume, believing that Christians in other parts of the country will be glad to enjoy some of those exhibitions of truth which God has so peculiarly owned and blessed in the great metropolis, have requested a number of ministers, of different denominations, to furnish one of their ordinary discourses delivered in the midst of the present great Awakening, for the purpose of making a Memorial Volume of this work of God. Most of those clergymen to whom application was made, have kindly and cheerfully complied with our request. They have each given us a sermon prepared with no thought of its going beyond the hearing and the hearts of their own congregation. The sermon is in no respect intended to exhibit the learning or the ability of the preacher, but rather to be a specimen of the truth, and the manner in which it has been presented by various eminent clergymen in the ordinary ministrations of the Sabbath. These pages are the earnest, pungent expression of their heart and mind, at a time when God is doing great things in their churches, whereof they are glad." - from the original Preface

A NEW EXPOSITION OF THE LONDON BAPTIST CONFESSION OF FAITH OF 1689
Edited by Rob Ventura, with contributions by more than 20 Reformed Baptist Pastors

For centuries, Baptists have published confessions of faith as formal statements of their beliefs. Chief among these is the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689. This doctrinal statement is a spiritual treasure trove worthy of our fresh attention. In this new study, more than twenty contributors unpack its timeless biblical truths, “things which are most surely believed among us” (Luke 1:1). Our prayer is that the Lord will use this volume to richly edify and sanctify His people worldwide and to assist the churches in pursuing biblical holiness and doctrinal purity. May these labors send God’s people back again and again to the Bible, which is—as the confession states—the “only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience.”

"In a most attractive, readable and scholarly way this rich volume presents historic Christianity as Baptists have absorbed it and been confessing it for the last 333 years in this grand statement of our best Confession of Faith. This book is a tremendous achievement and destined never to go out of print." —Dr. Geoff Thomas, former pastor for over fifty years of Alfred Place Baptist Church (Independent), Aberystwyth, Wales

"This commentary on the 1689 contains all the riches needed in this peculiarly relevant undertaking. It is set in its rich historical context without destroying its ongoing contemporary relevance. The authors are committed to the confession's theological position in the context of rigorous biblical exposition. Both the content of the confession and the outlay of its exposition contains all the strengths of doctrinal catholicity, orthodoxy, evangelicalism, and Baptist thought. Each author has a deep grasp of the rich heritage of historical theology and the issues involved in canonical biblical interpretation and brings these to bear on the specific article under discussion. This volume will add richness to the weekly study of a pastor and give an invaluable book for church groups for enriching their biblical knowledge and the contextual consistency and doctrinal coherence of the inspired Scriptures." —Dr. Tom J. Nettles, Senior Professor of Historical Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

"This volume fulfils admirably the contemporary need for a thorough, detailed exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. Biblically rooted, theologically careful and engagingly written, this work is also consistently warm in its tone and practical in its application, authored as it is by pastors who are committed to the biblical truths that the Confession teaches. Anyone wanting a clearer understanding and firmer grasp of those truths will benefit greatly from this book." —Dr. Robert Strivens, Pastor, Bradford on Avon Baptist Church (Former Principal, London Seminary)

"In this volume you will find men who have wrestled with the cardinal doctrines of Christianity and produced a commentary that sheds a warm light on the 1689 Confession. Difficult passages have been explained. Instructive detail has been provided. Here is a tool for every follower of Christ who desires to see Jesus, our altogether lovely One, more clearly, understand His redemptive labors more fully, and walk more nearly to Him in applied truth. May God give us all such unifying, reviving sights of Himself and His work as we make diligent use of this helpful volume." —Dr. John Snyder, Pastor at Christ Church, New Albany, Director of Media Gratiae

"I am grateful that there is a growing interest in doctrinal Christianity here in Africa and all over the world. Whereas there are many books dealing with one or two aspects of theology, it is good to have one book that gives those coming to Reformed Baptist convictions a comprehensive view of what we believe. The New exposition of the London Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689, written by proven men in ministry, is such a resource. Let us make it available to many. The fruit will be evident for all to see for generations to come!" —Conrad Mbewe, Pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church and Founding Chancellor of the African Christian University in Lusaka, Zambia

"This is an important resource for Baptists to understand their historic doctrines that were rooted in the Reformation. While I would disagree with some of the comments that argue for credobaptism, many of the chapters are superb in their biblical, theological, and experiential understanding and application of the great truths of Scripture." —Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"The 1689 London Baptist Confession, apart from a few issues relating to baptism and polity, is a mirror of the 1646 Westminster Confession of Faith (to which I subscribe). Both endorse Calvinism with its robust doctrines of divine sovereignty in creation, redemption, regeneration and final judgement. In an age of relativism and unregulated piety, a return to the doctrines of grace espoused by this confession is urgently needed. The exposition of these truths given in this volume is masterful. May its publication and use aid in the reformation of the church in our time." —Dr. Derek W H Thomas, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia SC Chancellor’s Professor, Reformed Theological Seminary Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries

"It may seem odd that a convinced Presbyterian should write a warm commendation to this volume expounding the 1689 Baptist Confession. However, I do so with pleasure and seriousness. Throughout church history, confessions of faith have served the church admirably, helping to guard the church's biblical identity and gospel calling. You do not need to agree with every sentence in this 1689 Confession to benefit greatly from its exposition by men of theological orthodoxy and pastoral integrity. Martin Bucer's maxim, 'True theology is not theoretical but pastoral; the end of it is to live a godly life', is richly expounded throughout this fine volume. Read and sink your mind and heart into the rich truths as expressed in this new work." —Dr. Ian Hamilton, Principal of Westminster Presbyterian Theological Seminary

"In second Timothy, the apostle Paul, nearing the end of his mortal life, was earnestly concerned that Timothy would hold fast the heritage of truth passed on to him. Many of the contributing expositors of the chapters in this new exposition of the 1689 are veteran pastors in the latter years of their longstanding pastorates. Central to their ministries has been a competent public proclamation of the Word of God and a holding to this great historic document. May the following generations be faithful stewards as they have been, in profession and practice, of the “sound words” they have set forth in this new work. Herein is a legacy of truth to be bought and not sold (Proverbs 23:23)."—George McDearmon, Pastor Ballston Lake Baptist Church, Ballston Lake, NY

ROB VENTURA (MDiv, Reformed Baptist Seminary) is one of the pastors of Grace Community Baptist Church of North Providence, Rhode Island. He is a co-author of A Portrait of Paul and Spiritual Warfare, and is the general editor of Going Beyond the Five Points, Covenant Theology, and Lectures in Systematic Theology. He is also a contributor to the Reformation Heritage KJV Study Bible.

GOING BEYOND THE FIVE POINTS: Pursuing a More Comprehensive Reformation
General Editor: Rob Ventura, Contributors: Earl Blackburn, Richard Barcellos, Sam Waldron & Robert P. Martin

In recent years, a doctrinal shift has taken place among believers so great that even the secular press has taken notice. Christians across denominational lines are laying hold of the biblical truth of God's electing love and saving grace in Christ, commonly called 'Calvinism.' For many, this marks the beginning of a deeper study into the whole counsel of God in Scripture. A thirst to be thoroughly biblical in all areas of life is driving a more comprehensive present-day reformation beyond the famous 'five points.' This book captures the voices of seasoned Reformed pastors graciously guiding and encouraging Christ's beloved sheep to press on and to seek the 'old paths, where the good way is' (Jer. 6:16). In this anthology you will be instructed concerning the abiding relevance of the Ten Commandments, God-centered worship, the masterful unfolding of God's great plan of redemption through divine covenants, the identity, nature, and work of the church, and the help that confessions of faith lend to our grasp of God's glorious Word.

ENDORSEMENTS

"The rediscovery of 'the doctrines of grace' among Baptists during the last sixty years has thrilled my heart! However, this welcome advance does not make a reformation. The further necessary questions of 'what is the church?' 'how should we worship God?' 'what is Christ like living?' stand before us still, begging for biblical reformation. 'Going Beyond the Five Points' provides clear biblical direction for reforming churches today. Barcellos' defense of the Ten Commandments for Christian living under grace is unassailable. Blackburn's chapters on Covenant Theology and the doctrine of the church are indispensable to Baptist reformation. Waldron's explanation of the Regulative Principle is greatly needed by Baptists to remind us of our foundational principle which needs renewed application to worship and government. Martin's persuasive defense of why Baptists need confessions of faith today is irrefutable. To gather them together as Ventura has done provides a classic standard for further Baptist reformation today. Baptist pastors, students, and church members need to study this book to understand what it means to build biblical and Reformed Baptist churches today for the glory of Christ." - Dr. Fred A. Malone, Senior Pastor First Baptist Church Clinton, Louisiana

"Going Beyond the Five Points is a wonderful pastoral resource to give to any brother or sister in Christ who has begun the journey of better understanding the doctrines of grace. If the Five Points are the appetizer for the hungry believer, these essays will provide a rich and satisfying main course to guide them in a deeper understanding of the truth." - Jim Savastio, Pastor of Reformed Baptist Church of Louisville, Kentucky

"Some truths lie close to the surface, others require more digging. In the substance of this book, you will profit from the groundbreaking labours of others, men who have begun to turn over the soil in order to expose the consequences and applications of a thorough embrace of God's sovereign grace displayed in the salvation of his people, considered not just individually but together. Readers willing to put in the effort will find much to ponder and much from which to profit." - Jeremy Walker, Pastor of Maidenbower Baptist Church in Crawley, England

WHEN HELPING HURTS & HELPING WITHOUT HURTING
Steve Corbett & Brian Fikkert

WHEN HELPING HURTS: How to Alleviate Poverty without Hurting the Poor, and Yourself

With more than 300,000 copies in print, When Helping Hurts is a paradigm-forming contemporary classic on the subject of poverty alleviation.

Poverty is much more than simply a lack of material resources, and it takes much more than donations and handouts to solve it. When Helping Hurts shows how some alleviation efforts, failing to consider the complexities of poverty, have actually (and unintentionally) done more harm than good.

But it looks ahead. It encourages us to see the dignity in everyone, to empower the materially poor, and to know that we are all uniquely needy—and that God in the gospel is reconciling all things to himself.

Focusing on both North American and Majority World contexts, When Helping Hurts provides proven strategies for effective poverty alleviation, catalyzing the idea that sustainable change comes not from the outside in, but from the inside out.

HELPING WITHOUT HURTING: in Church Benevolence

When a low-income person asks your church for help, what do you do next?

God is extraordinarily generous, and our churches should be, too. Because poverty is complex, however, helping low-income people often requires going beyond meeting their material needs to holistically addressing the roots of their poverty.

But on a practical level, how do you move forward in walking with someone who approaches your church for financial help?

From the authors of When Helping Hurts comes Helping Without Hurting in Church Benevolence, a guidebook for church staff, deacons, or volunteers who work with low-income people.

Short and to the point, this tool provides foundational principles for poverty alleviation and then addresses practical matters, like:

How to structure and focus your benevolence work

How to respond to immediate needs while pursuing long-term solutions

How to mobilize your church to walk with low-income people

With practical stories, forms, and tools for churches to use, Helping Without Hurting in Church Benevolence is an all-in-one guide for church leaders and laypeople who want to help the poor in ways that lead to lasting change.
