GOD'S GLORIOUS GOSPEL OF GRACE
The Potter's Prerogative - A Response to Leighton Flowers
Dr. Theodore Zachariades

WE HOPE TO HAVE THIS IMPORTANT TITLE AVAILABLE BY MID-OCTOBER 2017

"There is nothing better calculated to put steel in our spiritual beings than a firm grasp of the sovereignty of God in our salvation, as it is revealed in Scripture. Starting with the glory and majesty of God, Dr. Theodore Zachariades proves this truth with biblical fidelity and precision against a recent detractor. We need such champions of the faith today for the sake of the spiritual prosperity of the church of Christ. May we all put our thinking caps on and read this book so that we can teach and defend the true gospel in all its glory!" -Dr. Conrad Mbewe

"In today's politically-correct environment, to write a book with the sole purpose of refuting another one seems to be an outdated enterprise, very misguided and actually downright mean. More than that, this particular book is not a mere casual side swipe, but a thorough, detailed rebuttal. It addresses an opponent's arguments going to the biblical text, passage by passage, verse by verse. Point by point no ground is conceded. There is actually good reason for that. When truth is attacked, the failure to respond can be viewed by some as an admission that no counter-argument exists. When it comes to God's Sovereignty in salvation, such is surely not the case. I for one view this work by Dr. Zachariades as the exact opposite as 'nasty' but instead a kind and tender-hearted labor of love that I pray will be read widely, even by those who come to it with a bias opposed to the author's conclusions. I pray that it will be used of God to stem the tide of a dangerous man-centered theology (one that I know all too well, having formerly embraced it myself) that robs God of His full glory in salvation. May it lead many to delight in the true and certain knowledge that salvation is of the Lord." - John Samson, author of 'Twelve What Abouts, Answering Common Objections Concerning God's Sovereignty and Election

"Dr. Zachariades has provided a significant response to a recent challenge to the historic Southern Baptist doctrine of salvation by those who have positioned themselves as defenders of mankind's supposed 'libertarian free will.' By interacting with one of the leading theologians of that movement, Dr. Zachariades exposes its exegetical fallacies, theological superficiality, historical naivety, and dangerous associations. Most importantly, he forcefully demonstrates how far short that theological system falls from understanding the way that the Bible reveals the glory of God in the salvation of sinners through the person and work of Jesus Christ. Biblically saturated, theologically rigorous, polemically pointed and historically informed, this work has successfully refuted the arguments engaged. It is never a pleasant task to expose the errors of well-meaning Christian brothers, but when those errors are publicly being championed as faithfulness to God's Word, then they must be examined in the light of Scripture so that they can be seen for what they genuinely are. If you want a thorough defense of the doctrines of God's grace in the salvation of sinners, read this book!" - Dr. Thomas Ascol

"Theodore Zachariades, Ph D, has written this book specifically to lay bare the great difficulties one has to shoulder in order to maintain such a system. His careful labors have revealed just how radically disturbing is this attempted defense of traditionalism. Dr. Zachariades begins with the doctrine of God and shows how this view must either deny, or ignore, certain key biblical ideas in this root thought of all biblical doctrine. He proceeds with carefully exegeted studies of grace, the cross, biblical love, and the character of divine involvement in redemption. Along the way, he gives a clear presentation of Calvin's views of these matters (since he has come in for especially harsh treatment by Dr. Flowers), employs an impressive number of quality doctrinal and exegetical works (old and new), unfolds a pertinent knowledge of historical and systematic theology, manifests competence in use of the original languages of Scripture, and shows the advantages of a fair and rigorous orientation to logic. His method includes an investigation of the assumptions and polemical methodology of Dr. Flowers, demonstrating for everyone, hopefully, how certain mis-steps undergird this attempt to create a new paradigm for soteriology. Dr. Zachariades has done all of us a favor, both protagonists and antagonists of this theological movement, for he has given it the deep and serious examination that such a foundation-altering proposal calls for." - Dr. Tom J. Nettles

"In every generation the glorious sovereignty of God has to be reasserted and defended against those who seek to discount it in the name of a supposed human freedom to choose or to reject his provision for them. This book reminds us that the grace of God can neither be invented nor refused, and offers us true hope and assurance that our salvation is eternally secure." - Dr. Gerald Bray

THE POTTER'S FREEDOM
A Defense of the Reformation and a Rebuttal of Norman Geisler's 'Chosen But Free'
James White

"James White combines sound biblical exegesis, theological erudition, and a deep passion for truth in his able rebuttal to Norman Geisler's Chosen but Free. I am grateful that The Potter's Freedom powerfully exposes Geisler's inconsistencies and shows that his self-labeled "moderate Calvinism" is no Calvinism at all. The Potter's Freedom has far-reaching consequences for any serious student of Reformed theology, for Geisler is not a lone ranger in promoting historic Reformed theology as "extreme Calvinism" and Semi-pelagianism as "moderate Calvinism." I pray that God may use this book abundantly to remove many caricatures about the Reformed faith and to move many to embrace unabashedly solid, Reformed convictions." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke

"Many of us, who have otherwise profited from the writings of Dr. Norman Geisler, have been grieved by his hapless attempt to harmonize Calvinism and Arminianism. With the skill of a surgeon, Dr. James R. White dissects Geisler's arguments and reveals them to be based on convoluted thinking, inconsistencies, and misinterpretations of Scripture. I pray that this book shall have a wide audience, not just as a definitive rebuttal to Geisler, but also as a helpful exposition of the Calvinisim/Arminianism debate." -Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

A SOUTHERN BAPTIST LOOKS AT PREDESTINATION
Patrick Hues Mell

Patrick Hues Mell (1814-1888) was one of the first presidents of the Southern Baptist Convention (1863-1871 and 1880-1887) and its parliamentarian for many years. He also was Professor of Ancient Languages at Mercer University, as well as a faithful pastor for more than 40 years. This work is hard to find but among the best brief defenses of the Doctrines of Grace, especially Predestination and Perseverance of the Saints.

Tom Nettles wrote a very helpful Introduction in which he lays out the incredible man P.H. Mell was in his generation. He says this about Mell: "We cannot exaggerate his pastoral skill, his denominational contribution and his deeply-held theological convictions. We see in particular how fully he embraced his confessional Calvinism as soteriological truth. It was deeply in his heart as biblically sound, God honoring, and soul converting. He preached this as Baptist doctrine with non-negotiable conviction. He knew that it was by these truths that salvation had come to his own heart and by these truths, without compromise, God would call all those whom had been given to Christ in the eternal covenant of redemption."

"Should this publication have the effect to confirm my brethren in the faith once delivered to the Saints, and serve, in any degree, to counteract the tendencites, in our midst to Arminianism, I shall have accomplished my main design in writing." - The Author

TWELVE WHAT ABOUTS
Answering Common Objections Concerning God's Sovereignty in Election
John Samson, Foreword by John Hendryx of Monergism.com

DR. R.C. SPROUL becomes our latest endorser of "Twelve What Abouts" - "It is a privilege to have received your book, 'Twelve What Abouts.' The title is great as are your 'what abouts,' and your responses. Thank you for your ministry in Christ's kingdom and for the clear and thoughtful work that has gone into your book."

John Samson went from being a convinced Arminian to a grace loving, Christ-honoring, Calvinist. He shares some of his journey and winsomely answers many of the questions he himself grappled with. 'Twelve What Abouts' by John Samson is the perfect book for those seeking truth about God's sovereign grace in salvation. Straightforward, easy to read, concise, and most of all Biblical, this is a unique book, providing answers for the twelve most common objections raised against the doctrine of Divine election. Pastor Samson's gracious spirit provides an excellent reading environment for those struggling with these great truths of Scripture.

"After finishing a sermon from Ephesians 1, I was immediately confronted by three hostile young visitors who asked the question, 'What about John 3:16?'; as if the Bible contradicted itself. This non-thinking, non-theological, feelings-oriented mindset is typical of today's postmodern generation. Pastor Samson has given us a warm and simple (without being simplistic) introduction to the Doctrines of Grace, so this type of ignorance can be biblically combated. This book is a very helpful tool to give to a young Christian or to someone newly encountering the truths of free and sovereign grace. Distribute it widely." - Earl M. Blackburn, Heritage Baptist Church, Shreveport, Louisiana

"Sometimes a single misapprehension or sticky question stands in the way of an honest believer's examination of the doctrines of grace. John Samson answers those questions with a pastoral heart, yet with biblical fidelity." - Dr. James White, Alpha & Omega Ministries

One man said, "This book helped me enormously. My understanding of God's grace has soared to new heights." Another said, "This is the one book I wish had been placed in my hands as a new Christian. There is a lifetime of insight here." Still another revealed, "There were times reading this when I just had to stop, fall to my knees and thank God for His measureless grace in my life." Whether you are brand new to the subject, or still wrestling with these weighty concepts, Twelve What Abouts will prove to be an indispensable resource in your search for the truth.

"I want to commend, to all readers seeking an honest look into these matters, this very fine treatment in which Pastor John Samson carefully answers the most common objections to the biblical doctrine of divine election. John is one of the most passionate Christians I know, whose number one purpose is to make Christ known. This work on the doctrine of election is no exception. In it you will find that the purpose of election is to bring all glory to Jesus Christ in our salvation." - John Hendryx, from the Foreword

"Whether you are new to the doctrines of grace or simply seeking greater clarity on the sovereign grace of God in salvation, this book will be beneficial. In 'Twelve What Abouts', John tackles common objections regarding the doctrine of election in a concise and biblical way. His charitable spirit coupled with his broad based biblical knowledge make for a joyful learning experience. As someone who teaches the doctrines of grace to the women at our church, I've turned to Samson's teachings multiple times. Do yourself a favor and add this little gem to your library -- it will be one of the best investments you've ever made!" - a satisfied reader from Amazon

THE GOSPEL HERITAGE OF GEORGIA BAPTISTS: 1772 - 1830
Who Were They and What Did They Believe?
Kurt Smith and Brandon Smith with Introduction by Tom Nettles

"The Gospel Heritage of Georgia Baptists is a true historical testament to the bygone era of early Baptist history in the United States. Brandon Smith and Kurt Smith have greatly served us in tracing our Baptist lineage to these faithful forefathers who paved the way with their biblical conviction and theological fidelity to the doctrines of grace. I highly recommend this work as a historical textbook, but also as a reminder that Baptist beginnings were founded upon the unwavering confidence in the absolute sovereignty of God." - Dr. Steven J. Lawson

"Georgia Baptists have played a vital role in the spread of the Baptist faith throughout the southern United States. Their history has been shaped by some of the most influential pastors and church planters that Baptists have ever produced. This book introduces some of those luminaries and explains the biblical convictions that undergirded their work. It is a welcome addition to the important work of recovering our Baptist heritage." - Dr. Thomas Ascol,

TOM NETTLES begins his helpful Introduction with these words: "This present volume highlights the early days of theological witness among Baptists in Georgia. Truly noble were these men, Marshall, Marshall, and Mercer, who grasped the importance of embracing and proclaiming all the truths of God's revelation to men. Kurt Smith and Brandon Smith have given a clear and vigorous discussion of the early Baptist witness to the gospel in Georgia. That sinners are reconciled to God, are removed from their condition of condemnation, by the mercy and grace of God, apart from any meritorious attainment on the part of man, yea, in spite of the massive accumulations of demerit should sound like good news in the ear of any that truly feels the justice of God's wrath and anger against him. These humble heroes of truth among Georgia Baptists were concerned that the trust that sinners had was fully directed toward Christ alone with an undiluted sense of their dependence on the divine initiative, continuance, and consummation in their salvation."

Appendix D: Circular Letter for the Georgia Baptist Association in 1813

Tom Nettles powerfully concludes his Introduction with these words: "In light of the great faithfulness of these leaders among Georgia Baptists and the extension of their influence throughout the South, how should we respond? At least one implication is that we should seek corporate responsibility to maintain fidelity to a strong and biblically fulsome doctrinal foundation. It is one of the most strange phenomena of the early twenty-first century that the theology that our founders cherished and protected is positively opposed in some pockets of the Southern Baptist Convention and viewed as dangerous and historically unbaptistic. C. D. Mallary, another wonderfully productive and influential name in the Georgia Baptist Association, warned preachers not to 'fritter down the doctrines of grace, and give countenance by our own faith and teaching to self-righteous presumption.' 'The doctrine,' he continued, 'when appropriately unfolded has not only been profitable to believers, but has been blessed of God to the conversion of sinners. It has torn away their pride and fancied strength, revealed them as naked and undone, at the disposal of their insulted, yet gracious Sovereign, and driven them weeping and penitent to the Saviour's feet, there in their last extremity to cry out, "Lord, Save or we perish."' It is just this earnestness about the glory of God and the souls of sinners that should be the proper response to the doctrinal commitments unfolded in this book."

HOLDING GEORGIA FOR GENEVA
P.H. Mell and the Baptist Defense for Calvinistic Orthodoxy
Kurt Smith

Kurt Smith begins this powerful treatise with these words:

"When I think about the predominant view of historic Evangelical Calvinism among Southern Baptists in our day, I am reminded of what Judges 2:10 lamented over a particular generation in the nation of Israel: 'And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.'

Applying this to what appears to be the majority of Southern Baptists in relation to Calvinism - they are a 'generation' of people who know nothing of the theological heritage and confessional identity of their forbearers as doctrinal Calvinists. And to capitalize on this disappointing ignorance, there has also arisen a certain group of Southern Baptists who would lead the majority to believe that while Calvinism was present in the earliest days of Southern Baptist life, yet it was modified and seated in the background of what Southern Baptists actually believed. This line of thinking therefore draws the following conclusion: if Calvinism once existed at all among Southern Baptists, it was never the prominent, leading conviction of Southern Baptists.

But we have to ask: Is this true? Is this what the actual record of history proves about Southern Baptist doctrine? If we peruse the primary source material of Baptists in the South during the late 18 th century into the 19 th century as a whole, we will discover that for these Baptists, Evangelical Calvinism was believed, confessed, preached, and defended in bold relief. Moreover, it was not a so-called 'moderate' Calvinism, but a thorough 'Five-Point' Calvinism which they held so dear. And this was especially true of Georgia Baptists during this period in history.

In fact, so strong and uncompromising were their convictions Calvinistic doctrine that, as Baptist historian, Dr. Gregory Wills, affirmed: "From one corner of the state to another, churches and associations defrocked preachers for questioning Calvinist doctrines, criticized even slight alterations in Calvinist creeds, and blocked fellowship with doctrinally careless congregations. Just as the Georgia Association disfellowshiped Jeremiah Walker and his Arminian followers in 1790, so the Sunbury Association refused to alter their creeds from 'eternal election of a definite number' to 'election according to the Scriptures.' Throughout the nineteenth century, the Calvinists won victory after victory. They held Georgia for Geneva."

And among these Georgia Baptists who 'held Georgia for Geneva,' there was no voice with greater clarity and consistency than Patrick Hues Mell."

Tom Nettles opens his Foreword with these wordas - "Kurt Smith has produced an excellent volume reflecting the spirit and doctrine of P. H. Mell. This is not a detached, sapless, unimpassioned discussion, but biography put to the task of advocacy. The discussion accurately unfolds Mell's earnestness for Calvinism as biblical doctrine, profitable for evangelism, church purity, and personal sanctification. At the same time it presents what Kurt (I join him in this) believes is healthy biblical doctrine for the twenty-first century Baptist as well as the nineteenth-century Baptist."

"Kurt Smith has done an enormous service to Baptists all over the world in bringing out of the shadows of relative obscurity a great servant of Jesus Christ. SmithÆs easily read and well documented small biography of P.H. Mell, his life, labors, and doctrine, is stimulating and immensely welcomed. Every Christian, regardless of his denominational affiliation, should read this booklet and become better equipped to declare the glorious, all-powerful gospel that Mell believed and expounded, and which shaped the Christian world of the 19th century." - Earl M. Blackburn Senior Pastor, Heritage Baptist Church Shreveport, Louisiana

KURT M. SMITH is the pastor of Providence Reformed Baptist Church in Pine Mountain, Alabama. He is the author of 'Remembering Luther's Fight' and co-author to 'The Gospel Heritage of Georgia Baptists: 1772-1830' - both published by Solid Ground Christian Books. He is also a contributing author to the multi-volume series, 'A Noble Company: Biographical Essays on Notable Particular-Regular Baptists in America', published by Particular Baptist Press. He and his wife, Lorrie, have three children.

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD
The Proceedings of the First American Calvinistic Conference in June 1939
Edited by Jacob T. Hoogstra

This Conference was held June 27-30, 1939 at a critical time in human history as the power of Adolf Hitler was beginning to be known and felt throughout the world. It was at this time that a number of ministers of the Gospel were compelled to hold a Conference with the following stated objective: THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS CONFERENCE IS TO RALLY POSITIVE CALVINISTS TO STATE, TO DEFEND, AND TO PROPAGATE HISTORIC CALVINISM IN THIS, OUR AGE.

"In an age when few evangelical Christians find comfort and hope in the sovereignty of a fatherly God, this book serves as a surefooted guide to help us navigate some of the depth and breadth of this glorious truth that lets God be God. The authors encourage us to remember that whatever we think, say, or do, we must begin with God, continue with God, and end in God. If you want to understand and treasure the profound truth that God does all that He does in all spheres of life because He is who He is, read this book." -- Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Thological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Mich.

This book contains all that transpired at that first historic Conference, and includes the following:

FOUNDATIONAL STUDIES

A Biblical Theological Study of the Sovereignty of God by Prof. John Murray

A Dogmatic Study of the Sovereignty of God by Dr. John Macleod

The Sovereignty of God and the Barthians by Prof. D.H. Kromminga

APPLICATORY STUDIES

The Sovereignty of God and Politics by Dr. Garrett Heyns

The Sovereignty of God and Philosophy by Dr. L. De Moor

The Sovereignty of God and Ethics by Rev. Wm. Matheson

PUBLIC ADDRESSES

The Sovereignty of God and American Attitudes by Dr. Wm Childs Robinson

God's Sovereign Choice of the Younger Son by Dr. John Macleod

The Sovereignty of God and Human Responsibility by Dr. Leonard Greenway

The Sovereignty of God and the Word of God by Dr. Gerhard C. Aalders

The Future of Calvinism in America by Dr. Charles Vincze

"We Calvinists have faith in the dynamic power of a consistent, uncompromising appeal to 'the law and the testimony,' to the infallinbility of the Word of God and its application to every sphere of life. Our purpose is to meet the challenge of the day and to study and to re-emphasize and to propagate our Calvinistic principles." - from John J. Hiemenga's Welcome Address

"When we ask the reason for the love that foreknowledge intimates and the greatness and security of which predestination expresses, we are uniquely confronted with the grandeur of the divine sovereignty. It is love that is according to the counsel of the divine will. The reason is enveloped in the mystery of His good pleasure. We are face to face with an ultimate of divine revelation and, therefore, an ultimate of human thought. This love is not something that we can rationalize or analyze. We are in its presence, as nowhere else, overwhelmed with a sense of the divine sovereignty. We are struck with amazement. It is amazing, inexplicable love. But to faith it is a reality that constrains the deepest and highest adoration. It is love, the praise of which eternity will not exhaust." -from John Murray's foundational address

"In this way our faith does not rest on any human 'wisdom' but on the power of God. And it is infinitely better to depend upon His mercy and power than upon any of our imagined good works, merit, or righteousness. It is the only way in which a foretaste of heaven is given. I believe in the future of Calvinism in America or anywhere else because it teaches of a God Who is really God." - from Charles Vincze's closing address

Isaac Backus (1724-1806) was foremost a pastor; but his importance to American Baptist and the Church in general is immense. "The role which Backus played during the formative years of his denomination in America was so crucial that he has been termed the father of American Baptists." Roger Williams may have been the biological father of Baptists in America but Backus stands as their adoptive father. What Rogers began, Backus consolidated and gave a clear mandate to. In particular, Backus restored to Baptists their theological roots which had been mostly lost in the years after Williams. He, became the chief spokesman for the 'evangelical Calvinism' which replaced the Arminianism prevalent among the older Baptist churches. In spite of the Calvinism of the earliest New England Baptists, a shift to the Arminian outlook had been completed by the time of the Awakening. The 'Separate Baptists' largely followed the 'evangelical Calvinism' of Jonathan Edwards. Backus was their chief spokesman, articulating in the Baptist context the themes of sovereign grace which had been so eloquently espoused by Edwards."
