SERMONS ON THE DOCTRINES OF GRACE
C.H. SPURGEON (1834-1892) Edited by Dr. Don Kistler

REDUCED ON NOVEMBER 1ST.

C.H. Spurgeon is often referred to as “The Prince of Preachers.” In this collection of Sermons on the Doctrines of Grace, this princely preacher ably exposits and defends the most glorious elements of Reformed theology.

The doctrines of grace have long stirred debate, but for Charles Spurgeon, they formed the unbreakable thread running through all of redemptive history. Far from being abstract theological points, these doctrines were, to Spurgeon, the very pulse of the gospel. They revealed a sovereign God who saves sinners by His own initiative, for His own glory, and through the finished work of Christ.

“This book is more than a reminder of what the Prince of Preachers believed and preached. It is a rich resource of sermons on five crucial doctrines that help explain the biblical plan of salvation. These printed sermons instruct the mind and warm the heart.” —Tom Ascol, Pastor, Grace Baptist Church, Cape Coral, FL

From Scripture, he gives us:

(1) Total Depravity--A Sermon on Romans 8:7

(2) Unconditional Election--A Sermon on 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14

(3) Limited (Or Particular) Atonement--A Sermon on John 17:9-10

(4) Irresistible Grace--A Sermon on Romans 8:30

(5) Perseverance of the Saints--A Sermon on John 10:28

Spurgeon drew his sermon on Total Depravity to a close with these powerful words:

"And to conclude, let me remind you—and it is in the text, (Rom. 8:7) after all—that this change must be worked by a power beyond your own. An enemy may possibly make himself a friend, but enmity cannot. If it is but an adjunct of his nature to be an enemy, he may change himself into a friend. But if it is the very essence of his existence to be enmity, positive enmity, enmity cannot change itself. No, there must be something done more than we can accomplish. This is just what is forgotten in these days. We must have more preaching of the Holy Spirit if we are to have more conversion work. I tell you, sirs, if you change yourselves and make yourselves better and better and better, a thousand times better, you will never be good enough for heaven! Till God’s Spirit has laid His hand upon you, till He has renewed your heart, till He has purified your soul, till He has changed your entire spirit and made you a new man—there can be no entering heaven. How seriously then should each person stand and think, “Here am I, a creature of a day, a mortal born to die, but yet an immortal! At present I am at enmity with God. What shall I do? Is it not my duty, as well as my happiness, to ask whether there is a way to be reconciled to God?”

O weary slaves of sin, are not your ways the paths of folly? Is it wisdom, O my fellow creatures, is it wisdom to hate your Creator? Is it wisdom to stand in opposition against Him? Is it prudent to despise the riches of His grace? If it is wisdom, it is hell’s wisdom! If it is wisdom, it is a wisdom that is folly with God! Oh, may God grant that you may turn unto Jesus with full purpose of heart! He is the Ambassador. It is He who can make peace through His blood. And though you came in here an enemy, it is possible you may go out through that door a friend, if you can but look to Jesus Christ, the brazen serpent that was lifted up!

And now, it may be, some of you are convinced of sin by the Holy Spirit. I will now proclaim to you the way of salvation. “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:14–15). Behold, O trembling penitent, the means of your deliverance! Turn your tearing eyes to yonder Mount of Calvary. I see the Victim of Justice—the Sacrifice of Atonement for your transgression! View the Savior in His agonies, with streams of blood purchasing your soul and with most intense agonies enduring your punishment. He died for you, if now you confess your guilt! O come, you condemned one, self-condemned, turn your eyes this way, for one look will save! Sinner, you are bitten. Look! It is nothing but “Look!” It is simply, “Look!” If you can but look to Jesus, you are safe! Hear the voice of the Redeemer, “Look unto Me and be saved.” Look! Look! Look! O guilty souls—

'Venture on Him, venture wholly,

Let no other trust intrude!

None but Jesus, None but Jesus,

Can do helpless sinners good!'

(Joseph Hart)

May my blessed Master help you to come to Him and draw you to His Son, for Jesus’ sake. Amen and Amen."

Charles Spurgeon, a man whose voice thundered with gospel truth across Victorian England, has been called “The Prince of Preachers”. His life was marked by deep devotion to Christ, bold preaching, and tireless evangelism. His ministry expanded through the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, launching over 66 gospel ministries. Though plagued by depression and chronic illness, he preached to over a million people and baptized more than 15,000 converts. Heavily influenced by the Puritans, Spurgeon had a library of several thousand of their works by the time of his death.
