THE ONLY EASY WAY TO HEAVEN JEREMIAH BURROUGHS, edited by Don Kistler
This seems like an odd title for a Puritan work, but it is Burroughs’ actual title. The title page says, “Showing that the way that Jesus Christ teaches is an easy way.”
Based on Matthew 11:30, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Burroughs shows that the way of salvation is indeed easy if compared to any other way. The yoke of Christ is certainly easier than the yoke of the law. It is easier than the yoke of sin. It is easier than trying to earn God’s favor through human effort.
One prominent pastor has said that there are only two religions that have ever existed: the religion of human achievement and the religion of divine accomplishment. It’s actually the ONLY way to heaven, much less the only EASY way to heaven. This book should be of great encouragement to all God’s children.
It is perhaps the greatest tribute to Jeremiah Burroughs that his contemporaries held him in such high esteem. No less men of renown as Thomas Goodwin, William Greenhill, and William Bridge published six volumes of his writings after his death because of their regard for his wisdom and piety.
A member of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, Burroughs was also beloved for his gentle spirit. Richard Baxter said of him, "If all the Episcopalians had been like Archbishop Ussher, all the Presbyterians like Mr. Stephen Marshall, and all the Independents like Jeremiah Burroughs, the breaches of the church would soon be healed."

 About the Author
Jeremiah Burroughs (1599–1646) was loved for his preaching and his gentle spirit, yet the government persecuted him because of his nonconformity to the Church of England. Forced to flee to Rotterdam, Holland, for a time, he eventually returned to England and preached to congregations in Stepney and Cripplegate in London, two of the largest in England.
