SHORT OF GLORY: A Biblical and Theological Exploration of the Fall
Mitchell L. Chase

A Study of How Genesis 3 Influences the Whole Story of the Bible

When looking around at the world, it is easy to see that all is not as it should be. This brokenness within the world and humanity finds its roots in mankind’s rebellion against God. The fall, as recorded in Genesis 3, sets the stage for creation’s need for redemption—ultimately found in Jesus Christ.

In this book, pastor and professor Mitchell Chase argues that in order to understand the fall and recognize its profound impact on later Scripture and the world today, Christians must first understand Genesis 3. Chase identifies themes found in Genesis 3—temptation, shame, messianic hope, and more—and shows how they reverberate throughout the rest of the storyline of Scripture. Understanding Adam and Eve’s fall is crucial to understanding the world as it currently is and the need for redemption through Jesus.

ENDORSEMENTS

“Short of Glory is an exceptional introduction to the way the events of Genesis 3 are woven through the biblical witness. Mitchell Chase’s theological acumen and exegetical sophistication are front and center as he carefully elucidates the far-reaching implications of sin and the even farther-reaching implications of God’s grace to his people. Highly recommended as an example of theology and exegesis in service of the good news.” -Brandon D. Smith, Assistant Professor of Theology and New Testament, Cedarville University; Cofounder, Center for Baptist Renewal

“We often speak of living in a ‘fallen world.’ But what does that mean, precisely? In order to embrace the good news of the gospel, we first have to understand the problems that Jesus came to fix. In this penetrating reflection on Genesis 3, Mitchell Chase helps us see every aspect of life as, to quote Tolkien, ‘soaked with the sense of exile.’ Short of Glory will help us better appreciate how comprehensive the work of Christ is—and make us long for it to be completed.” -Gavin Ortlund, Pastor, First Baptist Church of Ojai, California; author, Finding the Right Hills to Die On and Why God Makes Sense in a World That Doesn’t

“Understanding what went wrong is essential for understanding how it can be made right, and by whom. Mitchell Chase expertly guides readers not only through Genesis 3 but also through the reverberations of Genesis 3 in the rest of the Scriptures. The tentacles of the fall can be felt on every page of the Bible. Not paying attention to these themes might mean missing what the good news is all about.” -Patrick Schreiner, Associate Professor of New Testament and Biblical Theology, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, The Visual Word and The Kingdom of God and the Glory of the Cross

“We live in a world of turmoil, heartache, and evil. We know it shouldn’t be so, but we don’t always spend enough time reflecting on why it is. As this book helps us to stare at the greatest of all tragedies, two things start happening: we see the world in much sharper clarity, and we find ourselves drawn again and again to the hope of Christ.” -Sam Allberry, pastor; author, 7 Myths about Singleness

“Mitchell Chase’s book is refreshing because he retrieves the covenant of works to explain why original sin must be traced back to Adam as our federal head. Plunging into the sorrow of Adam’s iniquity, Chase then lifts our heads to see the hope we have in Christ, our covenant surety. Unless we understand the tragedy of our fall in Adam, we will not rejoice at the triumph of our redemption in Christ, the second Adam. Here is a compelling exposition of our exile east of Eden.” -Matthew Barrett, Associate Professor of Christian Theology, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Executive Editor, Credo Magazine; author, Simply Trinity

HOPE FOR ALL THE EARTH: Understanding the Story of the Old Testament
Mitchell L. Chase

'HOPE FOR ALL THE EARTH: Understanding the Story of the Old Testament' is a short book about the largest section of the Bible. The Old Testament is 3/4 of Scripture, yet it is the more difficult of the Testaments to understand and process. The many nations, places, prophecies, and historical events can appear overwhelming, and some parts of the Old Testament can require great patience and perseverance for readers. Since all of the Bible is Christian Scripture–from Genesis to Revelation–we need to understand the ancient stories and the Epic Plot. What is the Old Testament for? What are the thirty-nine books trying to tell us? In Hope for All the Earth, I take the reader through the storyline of the Old Testament, covering the main characters and covenants and patterns and prophecies that advance a hope for a redeemer. Jesus Christ is the hope for all the earth. I wrote this book to give a concise, accessible presentation of the Old Testament’s story. It’s for individuals and groups, Bible courses and Sunday School classes, small groups and devotional reading. My prayer for the book is that it would increase our understanding of what the Old Testament is for, as well as stir our joy that our Redeemer has come.

ENDORSEMENTS

"On my last visit to Texas, my successor at Grace Covenant Baptist Church (Pastor Matt Stahl), gave me a couple of copies of Mitchell Chase's Hope For All The Earth: Understanding The Story Of The Old Testament. Matt was enthusiastic about the book and had purchased several copies for distribution. Upon returning home I sat down to read this little book of only eighty eight pages. I soon understood Matt's enthusiasm. Very few men are gifted with an economy of words. Mitchell Chase is so-gifted. 'Hope For All The Earth' is a marvel in that in only eight short chapters is found a remarkable survey of the entire Old Testament. We are reminded that the Old Testament is a progressively revealed, unified narrative of God's gracious covenantal plan to redeem His people through the work of the Old Testament's central Person, namely the Lord Jesus Christ. What a helpful little book! It should be distributed widely. No doubt many will find it a helpful book to use in evangelism, and in small groups or Sunday Schools." -David Dykstra, Pastor Emeritus, Grace Covenant Baptist church, Willis, Texas

"What took me a myriad of seminary classes to learn is clearly articulated in this little book (under 100 pages!) Jesus is the hope for all the earth and the story of the Old Testament is one that continually points to this truth. Mitchell Chase does a wonderful job at clearly and concisely retelling the Old Testament narrative in a way that brings this to light. Well worth a read, especially if you struggle to see how the Old Testament teaches us about Jesus." -testimony from a reader

TEN QUOTES FROM 'HOPE FOR ALL THE EARTH'

1. We live in a universe made for the glory of Jesus Christ, and we read a Bible written for that same purpose. (Pg. 5)

2. We need restoration from the alienation of sin. We need atonement, but this is not a covering we can configure for ourselves. (Pg. 9)

3. External circumcision would not guarantee an inward devotion to God; a circumcision of the heart was vital. (Pg. 16)

4. Moses’ mission was impossible for him to complete, and that was the point. God would act by a mighty hand and outstretched arm. (Pg. 26)

5. God’s people needed a king who would lead them in righteousness and seek God’s heart. (Pg. 40)

6. As the resurrected son of David, Jesus possesses an unceasing reign because he has conquered death. (Pg. 42)

7. False worship and false priests coincided with a false kingship. (Pg. 51)

8. Through a new exodus, the new David would form a new covenant. (Pg. 67)

9. The rebuilt temple, though lacking glory, would one day give way to greater glory. (Pg. 73)

10. The end of the Old Testament is not the end of the Bible’s story, and the heavenly silence during the intertestamental period would not last. (Pg. 84)

SHORT STUDIES IN BIBLICAL THEOLOGY (8 Volumes at This Time)
Greg Beale, Andrew Naselli, William Osborne, Sidney Greidanus, Patrick Schreiner, Graeme Goldsworthy, Frank Thielman, Mitchell Chase

A BRAND NEW SERIES OF SHORT STUDIES IN BIBLICAL THEOLOGY edited by Dane C. Ortlund, Miles V. Van Pelt is designed to help readers see the whole Bible as a unified story culminating in Jesus Christ. Written by trusted scholars, each volume traces an important topic through God's Word and explores its significance for the Christian Life.

(1) REDEMPTIVE REVERSALS AND THE IRONIC OVERTURNING OF HUMAN WISDOM by G.K. Beale

“But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” —Matthew 19:30

The Bible is full of ironic situations in which God overturns the world’s wisdom by doing the opposite of what is expected—people are punished by their own sin, the persecution of the church is the catalyst for its growth, Paul claims to have strength through weakness, and more. In this book, biblical scholar G. K. Beale explores God’s pattern of divine irony in both judgment and salvation, finding its greatest expression in Jesus’s triumph over death through death on a cross. Unpacking this pattern throughout redemptive history, Beale shows us how God often uses what is seemingly weak and foolish to underscore his own strength and power in the lives of his people today.

G. K. Beale (PhD, University of Cambridge) is professor of New Testament and biblical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary. In recent years he has served as president and member of the executive committee of the Evangelical Theological Society. He has written several books and articles on biblical studies.

(2) THE SERPENT AND THE SERPENT SLAYER by Andrew Naselli

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” —Genesis 3:15

We’ve all heard this story: the hero fights a dragon in an epic battle, and just as it appears the dragon is going to prevail, the hero saves the day. Best-selling novels and blockbuster movies are filled with this type of story, but did you know that this is the main theme of the Bible too?

Tracing the theme of serpents and dragons through both Testaments, trusted scholar Andrew David Naselli demonstrates that these stories reflect our desire to know the ultimate story—the struggle between God’s offspring and the offspring of the serpent. As we come to experience this captivating, unifying narrative, we will rejoice in the ultimate victory of Jesus—the serpent slayer—over the devouring dragon in Revelation.

Andrew David Naselli (PhD, Bob Jones University; PhD, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is associate professor of systematic theology and New Testament at Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis and one of the pastors of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

(3) DIVINE BLESSING AND THE FULLNESS OF LIFE IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD by William Osborne

“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things” —Romans 8:32

As Christians, “blessing” pervades our everyday lives—from testimonies recounting God’s provision, to praise songs, to wishing someone well. The term has been so integrated into our everyday vocabulary that it is rarely considered carefully. Many people think that blessing is described as either physical (Genesis 1:22) or spiritual (Ephesians 1:3), but a fuller biblical-theological approach reveals that God’s blessing has always been physical, spiritual, and—ultimately—relational. Unpacking this pattern throughout redemptive history, William Osborne shows that divine blessing is not just a good gift here or there, but the fullness of all we were created to be, in relationship with our Creator.

William R. Osborne (PhD, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as associate professor of biblical and theological studies at College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri. He is the author of Trees and Kings, coauthor of A Book-by-Book Guide to Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary, and coeditor of Riddles and Revelations. He is on the editorial board of the Journal for the Evangelical Study of the Old Testament, a publication he co-founded, and has authored many articles and reviews.

(4) FROM CHAOS TO COSMOS: CREATION TO NEW CREATION by Sidney Greidanus

“I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the LORD, who does all these things.” —Isaiah 45:7

When God created the world, he brought perfect order out of what was “without form and void.” But with human rebellion against God leading to God’s curse, disorder was introduced into creation—disorder that we still see all around us today. Tracing the chaos to cosmos theme from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22, pastor-scholar Sidney Greidanus reveals how God is restoring his creation through Jesus Christ, who has already begun to shine light into the darkness and will one day return to bring peace, order, and restoration once and for all. With discussion questions at the end of each chapter and a fourteen-session reading plan, this book is ideal for small groups as well as individual study.

Sidney Greidanus (PhD, Free University of Amsterdam) has taught at Calvin College, Calvin Theological Seminary, and The King’s College. Since his retirement from full-time teaching in 2004, he has devoted his time to writing commentaries specifically for preachers. He is the author of many books, including Sola Scriptura; Preaching Christ from the Old Testament; and The Modern Preacher and the Ancient Text.

(5) THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND THE GLORY OF THE CROSS by Patrick Schreiner

“The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” —Matthew 13:31–32

When Jesus began his ministry, he announced that the kingdom of God was at hand. But many modern-day Christians don’t really understand what the kingdom of God is or how it relates to the message of the gospel.

Defining kingdom as the King’s power over the King’s people in the King’s place, Patrick Schreiner investigates the key events, prophecies, and passages of Scripture that highlight the important theme of kingdom across the storyline of the Bible—helping readers see how the mission of Jesus and the coming of the kingdom fit together.

Patrick Schreiner (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is assistant professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of The Body of Jesus and The Kingdom of God and the Glory of the Cross.

(6) THE SON OF GOD AND THE NEW CREATION by Graeme Goldsworthy

"Truly this was the Son of God!" -Matthew 27:54

The theme of divine sonship stretches across the pages of the Bible: from Adam in the garden of Eden, through the nation of Israel and King David, and ultimately to Jesus Christ in the New Jerusalem—the Son of God par excellence. In this volume, renowned biblical scholar Graeme Goldsworthy shows what Christ's fulfillment of the divine sonship motif means for all who are sons and daughters of God.

Graeme Goldsworthy (PhD, Union Theological Seminary) previously served as a lecturer in biblical theology, Old Testament, and hermeneutics at Moore Theological College in Sydney, Australia. Graeme lives in Brisbane, Australia, with his wife, Miriam. They have four adult children.

(7) THE NEW CREATION: And the Storyline of Scripture by Frank Thielman

A Biblical Theology of the New Creation from Genesis to Revelation

“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.” —Revelation 21:3

The Bible begins with the story of one perfectly good God creating a perfectly good universe. Forming two perfectly good human beings in his own image—Adam and Eve—was the crown jewel of his creative expression. Through humanity’s sin, however, God’s creation fell into a fallen state—yet he promised to bring restoration. In this book, Frank Thielman traces the theme of the new creation through the Bible, beginning in Genesis and ending in Revelation. He shows us that at every turn, God invites his people to be a “kingdom of priests” (Exodus 19:6), exemplifying the new creation to a needy and watching world until the return of Jesus.

(8) RESURRECTION HOPE AND THE DEATH OF DEATH by Mitchell L. Chase

A Biblical Theology of Resurrection Hope from Genesis to Revelation

Death is a powerful and sobering reality. While everyone must face death, it is not the end for those united with Christ. Followers of Jesus Christ have resurrection hope—the proclamation that Christ has defeated death and the promise that believers shall share in his victory. The resurrection is essential to the Christian faith and is rooted in the faithfulness of God.

With scholarly insight, Mitchell L. Chase traces the theme of resurrection hope throughout Scripture, walking through each section of the Bible from the Law to Revelation. Having a proper understanding of death and resurrection will not only stir up our soberness for the reality of sin and death, but it will also motivate our praise to God.

Founded on Scripture: Highlights the interconnectedness of the Bible

THE DAWNING OF REDEMPTION: The Story of the Pentateuch and the Hope of the Gospel
Ian J. Vaillancourt

An Accessible Introduction to the Pentateuch and Why It Matters for the Rest of the Biblical Story

When starting a new Bible-reading plan, many readers begin enthusiastically in Genesis but then lose momentum when they encounter the Old Testament laws and genealogies. But the Pentateuch—the first five books of the Bible—has much to offer today’s Christian; it is the foundation for understanding the rest of the Bible, pointing forward to the coming Savior, Jesus Christ, in profound ways.

In this accessible book, Ian J. Vaillancourt offers readers a helpful introduction to the Pentateuch as the essential first act in the Bible’s grand story of redemption. The chapters cover the whole of Genesis through Deuteronomy, examining themes such as creation, salvation, genealogies, and biblical covenants. Each chapter concludes with discussion questions, making this book a useful resource for individuals or groups who are looking to dive deeper into biblical study.

Ideal for the Thoughtful Christian: Written for those looking for tools on how to read the Bible as Christocentric, such as Bible students and laypeople looking to dive deeper into God’s word

Gospel Oriented: Written in light of gospel fulfillment in Christ and current applications for the church

For Individual or Group Study: Each chapter ends in discussion questions, perfect for individuals or groups who are looking to dive deeper into biblical study

ENDORSEMENTS

“The Pentateuch seems forbidding and alien to many believers. But, Ian Vaillancourt has written a user-friendly introduction to the theology of the Pentateuch that will enable readers to get a big picture of the theology of the first five books of the Bible. He also shows in each chapter how the Pentateuch points forward to and is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Readers will see more clearly how the entire Bible fits together in this fine work.” -Thomas R. Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“You can’t make sense of a musical if you don’t hear the opening songs; you can’t make sense of a book if you don’t read the opening chapters; you can’t make sense of a trial if you don’t listen to the opening arguments; and in much the same way, you won’t ever make sense of the Bible if you don’t understand the themes of its opening books, the Pentateuch. What my friend Ian does so well in The Dawning of Redemption is introduce the major themes that begin at the beginning and extend all the way to the end. If you’ll read it, you won’t better understand just those five books, but also the sixty-one that follow. You’ll better understand the Pentateuch, to be sure, but also the entire Bible.” -Tim Challies, author, Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God

“An engaging, accessible entry into the five books that launch the story of the Bible. The Dawning of Redemption is sure to mobilize many in the church to dust off ‘Moses’s book’ and see in its pages the opening act of a beautiful story of redemption.” -Andrew Abernethy, Professor of Old Testament, Wheaton College; author, Savoring Scripture

“This wonderful introduction to the first five books of the Bible—the book of Moses—is popular-level, easy to read, and extremely helpful in putting the storyline together so that modern-day readers can appreciate material that seems otherwise irrelevant by today’s standards. I wholeheartedly recommend this little volume to anyone interested in the Bible, whether as beginner or serious student. Readers will be assisted in understanding how these early parts of the Bible point forward to the coming of a redeemer, Jesus Christ.” -Peter J. Gentry, Senior Professor of Old Testament, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; Distinguished Visiting Professor of Old Testament and Senior Research Fellow of the Text and Canon Institute, Phoenix Seminary

“Affirming the Pentateuch as Moses’s book and as God’s living word, Vaillancourt shows how the Bible’s initial portrait of redemption foreshadows Christ’s person and saving work. The Dawning of Redemption overviews nine stages in the Bible’s opening story and at every point celebrates Christ as the climax of history, the substance of all shadows, and the bestower of restoration blessings. Vaillancourt rightly recognizes that the Pentateuch is Christian Scripture, and he clearly and faithfully invites new readers into the message of the Bible’s first five books.” -Jason S. DeRouchie, Research Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Theology, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Content Developer and Global Trainer, Hands to the Plow Ministries

Ian J. Vaillancourt (PhD, University of St. Michael’s College) is an associate professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Heritage Theological Seminary. He is the author of The Multifaceted Saviour of Psalms 110 and 118: A Canonical Exegesis (2020 RBY Scott Award winner). He and his wife, Natalie, have two children and are members at West Highland Baptist Church in Hamilton, Ontario.
