LECTURES ON THE LAW AND GOSPEL
Stephen H. Tyng

"This difference between the Law and the Gospel is the height of knowledge in Christendom. Every person who assumes or glories in the name of Christian should know and be able to state this difference." - Martin Luther

"You cannot be a Christian long without encountering the words "law" and "gospel." How do we understand these magnificent words found throughout Scripture? Postmodernists and many evangelical brusquely reject law. Countless others either do not grasp or ignorantly pervert the gospel. Today much confusion reigns regarding both. Stephen Tyng, with humble piety and a scholarly heart, unfolds the biblical mysteries of these indispensable theological truths in such a manner that confusion becomes clear; the foggy mist is lifted. Written for pastors, people in the pew, students, and those wrestling with the perpetuity and place of the law in relation to the saving gospel of Christ, everyone will profit from its contents. Do yourself a favor and purchase, read, mark, and study this book. Its impartation of truth will fortify your life and labors in making known the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." - Earl M. Blackburn, Pastor

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE REFORMED CHURCH
James I. Good

"The chapters of this book first appeared in the Reformed Church Magazine (1893-1895). They then received favorable comment. Since that Magazine ceased publication, there have been so many inquiries for them that it is evident they met a felt want in the Church, and the Sunday-school Board of the Reformed Church in the United States has undertaken their publication in this volume. The author has added several chapters to those that appeared in the Magazine. It is hoped that the lives of these Reformed saints will stimulate the ladies of our Church to greater interest in our splended Church history, and to greater activity as in missions and the practical worj of the Church, in which they already excel." - from the Author's Preface

Some of the ladies considered are the following:

ANNA REINHARD, Zwingli's Wife

IDELETTE D'BURES, Calvin's Wife

ANNA BULLINGER, Henry's wife

QUEEN MARGARET of Navarre

QUEEN JEANNE D'ALBRET of Navarre

FAMILY WORSHIP FOR THE CHRISTMAS SEASON
Ray Rhodes, Jr.

"In a day when having regular family worship is no longer a foregone conclusion (even among conservative Evangelicals), Ray Rhodes provides a wonderful impetus to start: a month of clear, biblical, practical devotions celebrating the birth of King Jesus. Hopefully, those who begin this Christmas using this excellent resource will continue gathering daily at the family altar throughout the coming year." - David W. Bailey, Ph.D., Author - Speaking the Truth in Love: The Life and Legacy of Roger Nicole

"Ray Rhodes has written a wonderfully creative book on family worship for the Christmas season. For a father or mother to take their children through these precious truths would create a fond memory that the children would have for the rest of their life. The book is doctrinally sound, well written, and greatly honoring to our Lord. I'm going to order three copies right now!" - Martha Peace, Biblical Counselor and author of 'The Excellent Wife'

"The Christmas season is a great time for daily family worship. If you've never enjoyed family worship on a consistent basis, there's no better time to start. Whether your family already enjoys the biblical and historic Christian practice of family worship or you're just beginning, consider using Ray Rhodes' engaging Family Worship for the Christmas Season this December." - Dr. Donald S. Whitney , author of "Spiritual Disciplines of the Christian Life' and 'Family Worship: In the Bible, in History, and in Your Home.'

"Author and speaker Ray Rhodes gives parents some expert help with these insightful and truth-filled devotional exercises for family worship during the Christmas season. Make December different this year by trying them out with your family. This book can make a significant difference in your family's understanding of the incarnation." - Jim Elliff, Christian Communicators Worldwide

"It is rare to find solid Family Worship resources in our day, let alone one for the advent season. Ray Rhodes has provided an outstanding tool for busy fathers during this opportune time of year. May God powerfully use it in the godly instruction of our families and for the generations to come!" - Pastor Jerry Marcellino, author of 'Rediscovering the Lost Treasure of Family Worship'

"The Incarnation of Jesus Christ is one of the most important events in the history of the world. Too many years families get so tangled in the trappings of Christmas, however, that they miss its true wonder. Ray Rhodes has written a wonderful book that elegantly encourages and practically helps families draw near to each another as they draw near to the Lord in celebrating his birth. I highly recommend it." - John Crotts, pastor and author of 'Mighty Men: the Starter's Guide to Leading Your Family', 'Craftsmen: Christ-centered Proverbs for Men', and co-author with Martha Peace of 'Tying the Knot Tighter'.

You can add Peter Jeffery's THE TRUTH ABOUT CHRISTMAS for just $1.00, which is a 75% discount.

Isaac Backus (1724-1806) was foremost a pastor; but his importance to American Baptist and the Church in general is immense. "The role which Backus played during the formative years of his denomination in America was so crucial that he has been termed the father of American Baptists." Roger Williams may have been the biological father of Baptists in America but Backus stands as their adoptive father. What Rogers began, Backus consolidated and gave a clear mandate to. In particular, Backus restored to Baptists their theological roots which had been mostly lost in the years after Williams. He, became the chief spokesman for the 'evangelical Calvinism' which replaced the Arminianism prevalent among the older Baptist churches. In spite of the Calvinism of the earliest New England Baptists, a shift to the Arminian outlook had been completed by the time of the Awakening. The 'Separate Baptists' largely followed the 'evangelical Calvinism' of Jonathan Edwards. Backus was their chief spokesman, articulating in the Baptist context the themes of sovereign grace which had been so eloquently espoused by Edwards."

THE DOCTRINE OF ENDLESS PUNISHMENT
Its Historical, Biblical and Rational Defense
William G.T. Shedd

This doctrine is so solemn that man's natural instinct is either to ignore it or deny it. From time to time in the history of the Christian church it comes under concerted attack, as it did during the life of W.G.T. Shedd, the noted nineteenth century theologian and preacher. In this work, Shedd carefully expounds the biblical teaching on divine judgment, and sets it in the context of the history of Christian doctrine. He deals carefully and cogently with objections to it.

"W. G. T. Shedd's small but immensely useful book, 'The Doctrine of Endless Punishment,' takes direct aim at the conditional immortality views that are currently disturbing evangelicals. Shedd presents convincing historical, biblical and rational argumentation. It is a well-designed pistol for the protective pastor to fend off error, and will result in more passionate evangelism as it works its way through his preaching. - Jim Elliff, Christian Communicators Worldwide

"The Doctrine of Endless Punishment is a well-reasoned, theologically accurate statement which treats fully yet concisely the date contained in the revelation of God to man. This treatise deseves careful study; and provides adequate coverage of a much neglected aspect of Biblical doctrine." - Cyril J. Barber

Shedd shows that 'The strongest support of the doctrine of endless punishment is the teaching of Christ, the Redeemer of man; without the explicit and reiterated statements of God incarnate, it is doubtful whether so awful a truth would have had such a conspicuous place as it always has had in the creed of Christendom. Christ could not have warned men so frequently and earnestly as he did, had he known there is no future peril.' This book will have a profoundly sobering effect on its readers; but its lasting impression will be to cause a new concern for men and women without Christ, and undying gratitude for 'Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come'.

W.G.T. Shedd (1820-1894) was both a congregational and, later, a presbyterian pastor. He had a distinguished career as a Professor of English Literature prior to his work at the theological seminaries of Auburn, Andover, and finally at Union Seminary, New York. He is best known for his three-volume Dogmatic Theology.

EXPOSITORY DISCOURSES ON THE BOOK OF GENESIS
Interspersed with Practical Reflections
ANDREW FULLER

"Weighty, judicious, and full of Gospel truth. One of the very best series of discourses extant on Genesis." -C.H. Spurgeon

"Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) was an outstanding figure with qualities that make him one of the most attractive figures in Baptist history. Many in his day could echo the words of his very close friend William Carey , 'I loved him.'

As a pastor, part of the way that Fuller gave legs to his conviction about Scripture was to follow the expository preaching method of men like John Calvin (1509-1564) or the English Puritans and preach through Bible books consecutively verse by verse, chapter by chapter. He thus laid before his people 'the whole counsel of God' (Acts 20:27). Although he covered a significant amount of Scripture this way in his Kettering pulpit, only two of those expository series eventually found their way into print: one on Revelation, published in the final year of his life, and this one on Genesis, from 1806. It has long been out of print as an independent volume, though it has been available through various editions of Fuller's complete works. It is good to see it back in print, for as Charles H. Spurgeon once remarked about this very book: it is 'weighty, judicious, and full of Gospel truth. One of the very best series of discourses extant upon Genesis.'" - Michael Haykin

"Having just completed a study through the Book of Genesis, it is a great shame that this book was not available for the whole class. Like Dickson on Hebrews it is worth its weight in gold. Fuller often says more in one paragraph than many men say in a chapter. His 'Practical Reflections' are outstanding." - the Publisher

TWO MEN FROM MALTA
A Shipwrecked Apostle and a Toronto Newspaperman Challenge Thoughtful Roman Catholics to Examine their Faith
Joe Serge with Joel Nederhood

TWO MEN FROM MALTA--one of the men is the Apostle Paul, the other is Joe Serge, a Toronto newspaperman and columnist. In this book Serge describes his odyssey from Roman Catholicism to the faith of the Reformation.

Serge invited Joel Nederhood, a theologian and long time radio and television teacher, to join him in examining primary Roman teaching such as "the Mass," "Mary," "the Papacy," and the essence of salvation itself. Dr. Nederhood, whose published works include THIS SPLENDID JOURNEY and THE FOREVER PEOPLE, has produced a highly readable and provocative examination of the biblical material that Roman Catholic believers should consider as they evaluate their faith position.

This book conveys the high sense of freedom that Joe Serge experiences now that he has embraced the biblical teachings of salvation by grace alone, apart from works. The book also conveys sincere respect for Roman Catholics who will read it. And there can be no question that Joe Serge is praying that many who read TWO MEN FROM MALTA will join him in following the biblical teaching that reveals that Christ's works, not ours, will bring sinners into glory.

"Three groups of people should read this book: first, Roman Catholics who want to know why educated people like Joe Serge would want to become protestants; second, nominal Christians who are curious to know what America's favorite hymn, "Amazing Grace" is all about; and third, evangelicals who are being tempted by contemporary theologies to question basic doctrines in their reformed heritage. Guided in his study of the Bible by his spiritual mentor, the radio/television evangelist, Joel Nederhood, Serge tells the story of his spiritual pilgrimage in a clear and winsome manner. The book is a solidly biblical and heart-warming testimony to God's saving grace in Jesus Christ." -Dr. Roger S. Greenway, Calvin Theological Seminary , Grand Rapids, Michigan

"We are very much in need of winsome, popular, and yet not simplistic critiques of the errors of the Roman Catholic understanding of the Scriptures and the way of salvation. This easy-to-read short volume by Joe Serge and Joel Nederhood helps fill that need. It not only provides the human interest account of one man's pilgrimmage from a religion of works to a religion of real grace, but it also beautifully depicts the night versus day difference between man-made religion and faith that truly ascribes all glory to God. It's a great gift to give to Roman Catholic friends and neighbors because it so helpfully explains the gift of eternal life and acceptance with God through the person and work of Jesus Christ alone and received by faith alone. I commend it highly!" - Pastor Bill Shishko

BIBLE MODELS
The Shining Lights of Scripture Applied to Children
Richard Newton

"Our dear Father in heaven has filled His blessed book - the Bible - with interesting histories of the lives and characters of great and good men who have been His servants and followers from the beginning of the world; so that we, who live in these later times, may learn of their thoughts and actions and be made better by them. The Apostle James shows us the use God intends we shall make of these histories, when he says: 'Take, my brethren, the prophets for an example.' This means we should study the lives of the holy men of whom we read in the Bible, until we get the model points of their character impressed upon our minds; and then by the grace of God we may be able to bring these virtues forth again in our own hearts and lives.

"The author of this book has endeavored to place before young readers, in a clear and forcible manner, the admirable traits of character possessed by some of the great men of the Bible. The advantages to be gained by following these BIBLE MODELS are plainly shown by many interesting stories drawn from actual life. It is hoped that not only young, but older persons also will find pleasure as well as profit in the pages of this volume; and that, perhaps, as they become familiar with the lofty examples held up to their gaze, their hearts will go out in earnest prayer that 'God may give them grace to follow His blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, so they may come to the unspeakable joys which he has prepared for those who unfeignedly love Him.'" - from the Author's Preface

FOUNDATIONS OF GRACE: A Long Line of Godly Men - Volume One
Stephen Lawson

From the lawgiver Moses to the apostle John, and from the early church fathers to modern defenders of the faith, there has marched onto the stage of human history a long line of godly men, a triumphant parade of spiritual stalwarts who have upheld the doctrines of grace. In this book, the first in the five-volume A Long Line of Godly Men series, Dr. Steven J. Lawson takes readers on a heart-stirring survey of the Scriptures to show that the Bible in its entirety teaches the doctrines of grace.

Volume 1 (Foundations of Grace) covers 1400 BC thru 100 AD, tracing the doctrines of grace throughout Scripture. This volume becomes the foundation for what comes in the future.

Foreword by: Dr. John MacArthur

Afterword by: Dr. R.C. Sproul

"As Dr. Steve Lawson's reconnaissance of this matter so clearly shows, God's sovereignty is manifest throughout sacred Scripture. . . . When you finish reading this book, I would wonder and worry if you continue to persist in denying the full measure of GodĘs sovereignty in our salvation." - Dr. R.C. Sproul.

"The doctrines of grace are often misunderstood and mischaracterized. This helpful new book explains them thoughtfully and well. May God use it for His glory and others' good." - Dr. D. James Kennedy

"Steve Lawson understands that the text of the Bible presents a consistent witness to God's sovereignty and the panoramic display of God's glory. All this is evident in his preaching ministry and in his writing ministry as well." - R. Albert Mohler, Jr.

"Steven Lawson clearly and comprehensively lays the scriptural groundwork for the doctrines of grace." - Dr. John MacArthur

"Gripped in mind and heart by the twin truths of God's total sovereignty and His amazing grace, Steve Lawson compellingly traces these themes from the beginning to the end of Scripture. . . . Foundations of Grace shows, in a multitude of ways, that the Scriptures are useful 'for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.' - Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson

IS THE MORMON MY BROTHER?
Discerning the Differences Between Mormonism and Christianity
James R. White

"James White is a careful thinker and a tenacious defender of orthodox, biblical Christianity. His book clearly shows why the Mormon religion is incompatible with Christianity. The divide is very wide indeed." - Kenneth R. Samples, Director - Augustine Fellowship Study Center

"The is one of the most illuminating updates on the current state of Mormonism that I have ever seen. It brings Mormonism's unstable, changeable truth clearly into view, and provides a convincing warning against the most polytheistic religion ever offered to the modern world." - Dr. Gleason Archer, Professor of Old Testament and Semitics at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

"A Straightforward, Accurate Answer to a Question Once Considered Settled!

In Television campaigns, parachurch events, and clergy fellowships all across the United States, Mormons are presenting themselves as mainstream Christians. Is it unloving or backward to say they aren't real Christians?

In contrast to Christian monotheism the belief in one God, Mormonism teaches that God was once a man who lived on another planet and was exalted to the status of God, and that Mormon men can also become gods upon death and resurrection. Is the Mormon My Brother? Shows how this fact alone means Mormons and Christians are irreconcilably at odds at faith's most basic level.

In recent years Mormon apologists and church leaders have waged an unflagging public relations campaign to try to rid themselves of the stigma of being considered a "cult" in the evangelical community -. James White demonstrates in a peaceable yet conclusive way that the divide between Mormonism and true Christianity remains an impassible gulf."

- Dr. John MacArthur, Senior Pastor, Grace Community Church

"The first act of love in reaching out to Mormons is to demonstrate that we do not worship the same God. In 'Is the Mormon My Brother?' James White powerfully drives home that message." - Hank Hanegraaff, President, Christian Research Institute

GRACE AND GLORY
Sermons Preached in the Chapel of Princeton Theological Seminary
Geerhardus Vos with Introduction by R. Scott Clark

Geerhardus Vos (1862-1949) was an American, Reformed theologian and one of the most distinguished representatives of the Princeton Theology. He is sometimes called the father of Reformed Biblical Theology. Vos moved and joined the faculty of the Princeton Theological Seminary, where he became its first Professor of Biblical Theology. At Princeton, he taught alongside J. Gresham Machen and B. B. Warfield and authored his most famous works, including: Pauline Eschatology (1930) and Biblical Theology: Old and New Testaments (1948).

These sermons were preached at the chapel of Princeton Seminary and first published in 1922. These are not mere outlines or sketches of sermons, but are full manuscripts of the addresses delivered by the revered professor before his students and fellow faculty members.

John Murray said of him, "Dr. Vos is, in my judgment, the most penetrating exegete it has been my privilege to know, and I believe, the most incisive exegete that has appeared in the English-speaking world in this century."

"If there is one volume (by Vos) that deserves to be read by laity and clergy alike it is this little collection of chapel messages - Read these sermons as illustrations of how Vos read Scripture. Let him take you by the hand, as it were, to the text and through the text of Scripture, to the Word incarnate." - R. Scott Clark, from the New Introduction

"Often more respected than understood, Vos continues to fascinate and enthrall. These sermons reveal the penetrating exegetical insights of some of the most fascinating and powerful sermons ever preached. A century later, they continue to make us gasp in wonder and admiration, driving to read and then re-read these lines to behold the treasure that lies beneath the surface." - Derek W. H. Thomas

"In the words of F. F. Bruce on the cover of The Pauline Eschatology, these sermons, too, are '... indeed outstandingly great ... a rare exegetical feast.' They also remain a source of deep edification for the church today as they will for still future generations." - Richard B. Gaffin, Jr., Charles Krahe Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia

The uniqueness of Vos's emphasis on the centrality of the covenantal work of Jesus Christ in history and our possession of that work through His mediation draws us back time and again to his powerful and passionate sermons. Translated to the realm of glory itself through the proclamation of the accomplished work of our covenant Lord, and by the gift of His Spirit, we partake of unparalleled communion with God and possess Him as our highest treasure presently in Christ as our covenant God. Short of the consummation we have made His glory and joy in His people our chief end in this pilgrim life.

In his first sermon, "The Wonderful Tree," Vos sets the theme of his entire collection of sermons, the gift of Jehovah to His creatures to be their delight and personal possession through the covenant. In "Heavenly-Mindedness," Vos explicates the nature of true faith as that which lays hold of God Himself in glory, living in the hope of the eternal life of God in the city of God by resurrection.

"In an age rife with practical theology and anti-doctrinal Christianity, Vos calls us back to the Word to allow it to speak for itself. While Vos is perhaps lesser known as a preacher, here in 'Grace and Glory' we get a taste of what one dear saintly lady described as spiritual 'blueberry cheesecake.' Enjoy!!" - R. Daniel Knox, Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, PA

REFORMED DOGMATICS
The Complete Four Volume Set
Herman Bavinck

In partnership with the Dutch Reformed Translation Society, Baker Academic is proud to offer in English for the very first time the fourth and final volume of Herman Bavinck's complete Reformed Dogmatics, now also available as a four-volume set. This volume includes the combined indexes for all four volumes. In addition, editor John Bolt introduces each chapter and has enhanced the footnotes and bibliography. This masterwork will appeal not only to scholars, students, pastors, and laity interested in Reformed theology but also to research and theological libraries.

"Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics has been the fountainhead of Reformed theology for the last hundred years. It is by far the most profound and comprehensive Reformed systematic theology of the twentieth century. The reader will be amazed by Bavinck's erudition, creativity, and balance. Bavinck is confessionally orthodox, but he recognizes the need to rethink the traditional formulations from Scripture in the context of contemporary discussion. I hope these volumes will have a large readership and will bring forth much theological and spiritual fruit."--John M. Frame, professor of systematic theology and philosophy, Reformed Theological Seminary

"Bavinck's Dutch masterwork was the Everest of which the textbooks by Louis Berkhof and Auguste Leoerf were foothills and Berkouwer's studies in dogmatics were outliers. Like Augustine, Calvin, and Edwards, Bavinck was a man of giant mind, vast learning, ageless wisdom and great expository skill. Solid but lucid, demanding but satisfying, broad and deep and sharp and stabilizing, Bavinck's magisterial Reformed Dogmatics remains after a century the supreme achievement of its kind."--J. I. Packer, professor of theology, Regent College

"Despite all the important contributions that Dutch Calvinists have made to North American Protestantism, Herman Bavinck remains an obscure figure, lagging behind the influential Abraham Kuyper. With the translation and republication of Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics, this unfortunate situation should change for the better. These four volumes demonstrate the importance and mastery of Bavinck's own contribution to Reformed theology, while providing a useful and striking point of comparison with the best-known twentieth-century Reformed dogmatics, that of Karl Barth. At a time when the scholastic nature of systematic theology has come under serious criticism, Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics reveals the advantage of careful and sustained reflection on Christian truth that is both faithful to the church and engaged with the academy. Readers will discover more than Bavinck the theologian in these volumes; they will learn about the God whom he worshiped and served."--D. G. Hart, author of The Lost Soul of American Protestantism

A PASTOR'S COUNSEL
Words of Wisdom for Weary, Wounded and Wandering Ones
Jonathan Edwards, Philip Doddridge, Ashbel Green & Thomas Scott

A PASTOR'S COUNSEL is a precious little book from the American Tract Society that is full of brief, pithy, wise counsel for every member of the church of Christ, as well as those who are outside of Christ. This is sage advice that will benefit the shepherd and the sheep alike. It will help the pastor give sensitive counsel to his own soul, his family and the flock of God entrusted to him, and it will guide the sheep through a variety of perplexities they will face on their journey heavenward.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

What is it to Believe on Christ? By Rev. Dr. J.W. Chickering

The Act of Faith

Questions and Counsels by Rev. Ashbel Green

Self-Dedication to God by Philip Doddridge

Advice to Young Converts by Jonathan Edwards

The Closet Companion, or a Help to Self-Examination by George Burder

Signs of a Living or Growing Christian

Signs of a Dying or Decaying Christian

Directions to Assist in Attaining a Spirit of Prayer

The Knowledge of Pardon and the Witness of the Spirit by Rev. Thomas Scott

Scripture Counsels

Several of these pieces appeared in the form of a tract and were distributed the world over to hundreds of thousands of people. One testimony is given of their use during the Civil War: "Historians discovered through reading soldiers' diaries that it was at times difficult to get the soldier to attend regular church services, however they would read a tract. In the tedium of camp life nothing was more comforting than to read a Christian tract. Tracts such as 'A Voice from Heaven,' 'Don't Put it Off,' 'All-Sufficiency of Christ,' 'Self-Dedication to God,' 'Private Devotion,' and 'The Act of Faith' were the more popular tracts during the Civil War."

"Solid Ground Christian Books is respected the world over for finding hidden treasures from days long ago. A Pastor's Counsel is another such treasure. A Pastor's Counsel draws upon the wisdom of a number of godly men such as Jonathan Edwards and Philip Doddridge. Whether you are a Pastor or not you will certainly find food for your soul and for those that you minister to in this power-packed little volume. Because the book is under 100 pages you may consider reading it out loud to your family at meal time around the table. Solid Ground is doing a great service in finding treasures that otherwise may be left buried beneath the dust of the ages. Keep up the good work." - Ray Rhodes, Jr. is President of Nourished in the Word Ministries

FAMILY WORSHIP FOR THE REFORMATION SEASON
Ray Rhodes, Jr.

"Imagine, leading your family in daily worship in the home, reading the Scriptures, singing and praying, but simultaneously introducing them to the history, leading figures and theology of the great sixteenth-century Reformation - all this in a fresh and interesting way, in just about a quarter of an hour each day. 'That would be great,' you say, 'but it would take me hours and days to put that together. I could never do it.' Well, Ray Rhodes has done it for you in Family Worship for the Reformation Season. Use this book with joy. It will inspire, inform and instruct you and your family. The studies are simple but meaty. The Scriptures passages are helpfully chosen. And most of the lessons can be completed in fifteen minutes. Employ and be edified!" - Dr. Ligon Duncan

"Many today have called our increasingly secular age the beginning of 'a new dark ages'. Others see our climate as a time similar to that which birthed the Reformation - a time when the light of God's Word broke through the abiding spiritual darkness - becoming one characterized by the production and proliferation of the Scriptures. Thus, the latter was a movement from a visual-based society to a word-based society. Toward this end, Ray Rhodes provides us with a much-needed tool for our families to return to God's Word, understand our heritage, and be equipped to perpetuate this faith to the generations to come. You have all you need in this book to teach your family how to celebrate the Reformation season!" - Pastor Jerry Marcellino

"Once common, the practice of family worship has all but disappeared among the people of God today. Recent years, however, have seen a revival of interest in and commitment to this biblical responsibility and privilege. Ray Rhodes has contributed to the recovery of this resurgence with practical books like this one. Informative and useful at any time of year, this book would be particularly timely in the weeks leading up to Reformation Day." - Dr. Donald Whitney

"This book combines two divine blessings that are being rediscovered by a growing number of Christians in our day--our Reformation heritage and family worship. Ray Rhodes has performed a great service to families by organizing useful information about the former in ways that can be easily used in the latter. I pray that this book will be used to teach the rising generation important biblical truths through the stories of faithful men and women on whose shoulders we stand." - Dr. Tom Ascol, Pastor

"From the pen of author, pastor, conference speaker and book dealer Ray Rhodes comes yet another gem: a month of studies for the Reformation season geared for family worship. If you long to know more about this pivotal time in church history, yet you have felt intimidated by the subject matter, then get this book. You will learn, your family will learn--and you just might have a lot of fun as well." - Dr. David W. Bailey, Pastor

Following a similar format to our best-selling book of 2007, 'Family Worship for the Christmas Season', this book is intended to be used from October 1 - 31, with the grand climax being Reformation Day. At the same time, this book can be used at any time of the year. It is both informative and practical.

THE CHRISTIAN'S PRESENT FOR ALL SEASONS
Containing Devotional Thoughts of Eminent Divines
Joseph Hall, Isaac Watts, John Owen, Richard Sibbes, John Flavel, Jonathan Edwards, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, William Jay and More

An Introductory Essay on "Devotion" by William B. Sprague sets the stage for a rich devotional journey from Joseph Hall to William Jay. This volume was published in 1866 by The American Tract Society and it contains dozens and dozens of brief devotional exercises to stimulate the brethren to love and good works. The contributors to this volume are a veritable who's who in evangelical circles from the Puritan era to the mid-nineteenth century.

W.B. Sprague concluded his Introductory Essay with these words: "Among the many excellent works adapted especially to help the Christian in his devotions, this book holds a prominent place. The Compiler seems to have ranged through almost the whole field of devotional literature, and to have gathered up all the brightest gems that came in his way; and so successful has he been that one may open the book at random, as often as he will, and will never find his eye resting upon anything that he can afford to pass over, or that does not supply the elements of rich devotional thought. It is difficult to say which is most to be admired, the Compiler's good judgment and taste, or his extraordinary patience in research, that has brought to us the heavenly thoughts of so many saints and sages. This is truly a beautiful compilation of DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS."

D.A. Harsha, the Editor, said the following in his Preface: "It is more than ten years since the preparation of the present volume was commenced. During all this time, the selection of these beautiful passages has been slowly but steadily carried on. The work was undertaken in connection with the editing of a Library of Christian Authors, embracing Memoirs of Eminent Divines, and their choice works--a series whose preparation is not yet completed. In performing this long and arduous labor, and while carefully perusing the works of our best authors, from the 17th century to the present time, passages in each author, which the editor regarded as among the finest specimens of devotional and practical writing, were selected for the present volume. In this manner have these 'calm and holy thoughts' of those who have shone as stars in the firmament of the Christian Church, been brought together; and it is believed that in the following pages will be found some of the choicest gems of English sacred literature--gems which 'within small compass, and in purest gold, will preserve their lustre for ages.'"

"We sometimes sing the opening lines of Psalm 63 with these words:

'GOD is my great desire

His face I seek the first

To him my heart and soul aspire

For him I thirst.'

This book of devotions by such eminent saints makes it irresistible because the fervent desires of our hearts for GOD Triune must be fed." - Erroll Hulse

"This is sweet food from savory writers. Perfect for the breakfast table, the bedside, the bathroom, red lights, or anywhere else where a minute or two can be redeemed for your soul's nourishment." - Dr. Robert Martin, Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle and Editor of Reformed Baptist Theological Review

"A quick scan of the table of contents makes clear that this book could be referred to as the hall of fame of devotional literature. Theological depth and practical application define the writings of men like John Flavel, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Matthew Henry and the rest of the authors of this book. This book would make a wonderful gift for any occasion of the year. The recipient of such a gift would have a library in one volume of some of the greatest minds in Christian history. This book would be useful in leading family worship because it would expose your family to classic reformed theology in a devotional format. Buy this book in bulk, keep a copy for yourself and pass down the truth by giving your remaining copies away." - Ray Rhodes, Jr. is President of Nourished in the Word Ministries and author of two Solid Ground Books, "Family Worship for the Reformation Season" and "Family Worship for the Christmas Season."

"In a day of time-sensitivity when every minute and hour seems to be at a premium, the leisure our forebears had for reading seems a pipe-dream for most of God's people. What is the solution? We need better stewardship of our time, for starters. But also we need books like this one that distill the riches of eminent divines from the past and give them to us in succinct packages that will stay with us through the day and week.I am glad to see this marvellous collection reprinted by Solid Ground Christian Books." - Dr. Michael Haykin

One book notice said, "A collection of the holiest aspirations of the holiest men."

AN UNDIVIDED LOVE
Loving and Living for Christ
Adolphe Monod, Translated and Edited by Constance K. Walker

"If Charles Spurgeon was the prince of preachers in Victorian England, Adolphe Monod was the noblest preacher of the French revivals. With unequalled passion and clarity he brings the unassuming listener not merely to the foot of the cross, but to Jesus himself, as he is clothed in the gospel. Even if you are expecting to be moved by these messages you will be surprised and deeply comforted by their simple and compelling power." - William Edgar, Professor, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA

"English-speaking Evangelicals are, as a general rule, quite ignorant of the spiritual riches found in other Evangelical cultures. That of the French Calvinist tradition, coming down from Calvin and men like Pierre Viret, is a good case in point. The most vibrant representative of this tradition in the nineteenth century has to be Adolphe Monod. His sermons are food for the soul, but he is hardly known by contemporary North American Evangelicals. May this excellent sampling of his preaching, marked by rich piety and doctrinal clarity, help make his labours for the Lord Christ far better known." - Michael Haykin, Professor, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

This book is divided into three parts. Part one is largely relational. It speaks of finding our center, purpose and contentment in our relationship with a holy and loving God; it helps us see the fulfillment of that relationship as grounded in eternity, and then points to the joy of helping others to share in our fulfillment.

Part two of the book is more theological (but not at all in a dry, academic sense). These sermons shine fresh light on the nature of the God whom we love and serve: his love displayed on the cross, his power over death, his holiness, and his faithfulness, even in his threats.

Finally part three is more practical. It encourages us to seek and embrace God's plan for our lives, and to appreciate the joy inherent in the Christian life, even in its more challenging aspects, so that others will want to embrace it as well.

CALVIN MEMORIAL ADDRESSES
Celebrating the 400th Anniversary of Calvin's Birth
B.B. Warfield, Thomas Cary Johnson, James Orr, R.A. Webb and others

"As we approach the occasion of the 500th anniversary of John Calvin's birth, and eagerly anticipate the production of the many excellent historical and theological works that will mark the first half-millennium of Reformed Christianity, this set of essays from the beginning of the 20th century may serve both to edify us and to whet our appetites for more. One will find giants among the contributors (from Reed to Johnson to Orr to Warfield to D'Aubigne), and topics of abiding interest." - Dr. Ligon Duncan

"Any title on such themes, with not a few eminent authors contributing, has to be a book we shall all value seeing." - Iain H. Murray

"We are on the verge of the 500th anniversary of the birth of the French Reformer John Calvin, and it is good to look back at the way his life and ministry were appreciated at the 400th anniversary of his birth. It can be rightly said that if Calvin had not lived, the entire course of Western history, and in particular that of the Church, would be very different, and these essays document that fact very clearly. Against various attacks that had been leveled against the great Reformer in the nineteenth century, these essays demonstrate the tremendous good that Calvin did for the Church and the way that his life was truly lived to the glory of the God of Scripture. Though a hundred years old, these essays are still vital reading for anyone interested in the legacy of Calvin and the ongoing impact of his thought." - Dr. Michael Haykin

"As we swiftly approach the 500th anniversary of Calvin's birth and anticipate another flurry of books and essays in honor of the Genevan Reformer, 'Calvin Memorial Addresses' is a good place to begin our celebration. The contributors and the contributions warrant this reprint edition. The greatest worth of this reprint, aside from reminding readers of Calvin and his contributions to the church and the world, is the showcasing of past scholars who ought to be remembered and still have worthwhile things to say to the Church. Honor the LORD as you celebrate the 400th anniversary of Calvin's birth again." -Dr. C.N. Willborn

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States gathered in Savannah, GA in May 1909 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin. After an Introduction by Charles S. Wood, there are a full dozen excellent addresses that cover the incredible influence one man has had on the history of the world for centuries.

The grace of God is evident in the life and labors of John Calvin, and this amazing grace is magnified in each and every address that was given nearly 100 years ago.

LUTHER'S SCOTTISH CONNECTION
James Edward McGoldrick

"Although even those who have only a casual acquaintance with Scottish history usually have some appreciation for the significance of John Knox, few seem to realize that he was not literally the father of the Reformation in his homeland. There were several precursors of Knox who laid the foundations upon which he built, and those forerunners were, for the most part, disciples of Martin Luther. It is the purpose of this book to identify the most prominent Scottish Lutherans and to relate the roles they played in the first phase of Scotland's Protestant history." - from the Author's Preface

"Understandably scholars have tended to view the Reformed theologians like Calvin as being the major influences on the development of the Scottish Church. But in the early days of the Reformation in Scotland, it was Luther and his message that was the prime influence. McGoldrick's fine study sets the record straight. And I am glad to see it back in print." - Dr. Michael A.G. Haykin

"I have read McGoldrick's work! I started to glance over it and found I couldn't put it down. It is Fantastic! He fills in a lot of background to the Scottish Reformation that most works leave out. Usually the Lollard connection is mildly hinted at and the story of Hamilton is told only in so far as to explain why he was burned. McGoldrick gives a tremendous amount of information that very few writers have dealt with and he does it in such a fresh way!" - Pastor Robert Elliott

"Professor McGoldrick offers an important corrective to students of the Reformation who casually link Knox, Calvin and the Scottish kirk. The causes of the Scottish Reformation include Lollardy, Erasmian humanism, and most notably, Lutheranism, decades before Calvin's ideas found a fertile reception. Patrick Hamilton's treatise titled Patrick's Places (included in the Appendix) affirmed a strong Pauline doctrine of Justification and provided the theological foundation for the Reformation in Scotland before his martyrdom in 1528. We are all indebted to Dr. McGoldrick for his important research on the origins of the Scottish Reformation and the clarity with which it is presented.." - Dr. Dale Walden Johnson

Factual yet stimulating, simple yet penetrating, 'The Expository Genius of John Calvin' contains many scriptural and theocentric golden nuggets and hands-on practical tips for beginning expositors and seasoned preachers alike. May God use it to revitalize Christ-centered and Spirit-empowered applicatory preaching in our day." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke

"Preachers reading this book will be moved to take to heart Calvin's encompassion belief in the sovereignty of God's Word - as to its total sufficiency and massive potency. Further, they will be inspired to pursue the deep, enriching paths of lectio continua. This is a beautifully written, powerful, and convincing book. It is a must read for all who aspire to preach the word." - R. Kent Hughes

"In this book, Dr. Steve Lawson has masterfully presented us with thirty-two keynotes that made Calvin the best preacher of the Reformation, all of them centered around the Word of God preached expositorily. I would make this book recommended reading in courses such as homiletics and missions for any serious pastor and student." - Dr. Alonzo Ramirez

"An infectious appreciation of the preaching of John Calvin from the pen of Steven Lawson. No one reading this volume can fail to appreciate the debt we owe the 'Genevan Reformer.' Lawson has consulted the best of current scholarship and has produced a comprehensive distillation of the contours of the Reformer's preaching and, with it, a compelling advocacy of consecutive expository preaching. A magnificent achievement." -Dr. Derek Thomas

MARY BUNYAN
A Tale of Religious Persecution and Heroic Faith
Sallie Rochester Ford with New Introduction by Dennis Gundersen

This is the deeply moving story of the home life of the Bunyan family, as John, the father, languished in prison as a result of his preaching as a Baptist pastor in England during the 17th century. The account is historical fiction, told largely from the vantage point of his blind daughter, Mary, his first-born child and constant joy.

Mary became Bunyan's loyal, constant companion on every occasion when the authorities would permit her to visit her father at the prison, and his persistent petitioner for mercy and release before King Charles. This stirring account of how a young girl's faith in God grew, rather than diminished, during times of persecution, is an inspiring example of peculiar beauty for all believers today.

CALVIN ON SCRIPTURE AND DIVINE SOVEREIGNTY
John Murray

"The three lectures, here reproduced in slightly revised form, were given under the auspices of the Reformed Fellowship, Inc. in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 21, 22, 26, 1959 in connection with the commemoration of the four hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of John Calvin and the four hundredth anniversary of the publication of the definitive edition of 'The Institutes of the Christian Religion.' - John Murray

"The commemorative character of the occasion for these lectures, the prevailing keen interest in the subject of the inspiration and infallibility of the Bible, and the fact that Professor Murray is regarded by many as the foremost among living Reformed theologians in America, as well as his thorough acquaintance with Calvin's works, combine to lend special significance to the publication of this material." - the Reformed Fellowship, Inc.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Preface

Introduction to New Edition

CHAPTER ONE - Calvin's Doctrine of Scripture

CHAPTER TWO - Calvin and the Authority of Scripture

CHAPTER THREE - Calvin on the Sovereignty of God

Indices

The year 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the delivery of this series of lectures delivered by Professor John Murray of Westrminister Theological Seminary, as well as the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin. We are honored to be able to produce a new edition of this volume which includes, for the first time, a subject and scriptural index.

"John Murray was not only one of the most renowned twentieth-century representatives of classical Reformed theology, but also a highly-respected interpreter of Calvin. Here we have Murray's vigorous refutation of arguments suggesting that Calvin did not teach the inerrancy of Scripture. Murray also demonstrates that Calvin did not consider Christ's identity as the divine Word to be in any way prejudicial to Scripture being the very Word of God as well. There is also a valuable discussion of Calvin's doctrine of divine sovereignty in reprobation and in relation to human sin." - Sherman Isbell

"The republishing of this book is most welcome news. I consider it one of Murray's finest works and for it to reappear in 2009 would be most appropriate." - Dr. Richard Gaffin

REFORMED DOGMATICS: Volume 4
Holy Spirit, Church, and New Creation
Herman Bavinck

In partnership with the Dutch Reformed Translation Society, Baker Academic is proud to offer in English for the very first time the fourth and final volume of Herman Bavinck's complete Reformed Dogmatics, now also available as a four-volume set. This volume includes the combined indexes for all four volumes. In addition, editor John Bolt introduces each chapter and has enhanced the footnotes and bibliography. This masterwork will appeal not only to scholars, students, pastors, and laity interested in Reformed theology but also to research and theological libraries.

"Arguably the most important systematic theology ever produced in the Reformed tradition. I have found it to be the most valuable. English-speaking theology throughout the 20th century until now has been singularly impoverished by not having at its disposal a translation of Bavinck's Dogmatiek in its entirety. The appearance of these volumes will be an incomparable boon for generations of students, pastors, teachers, and others, serving to deepen understanding and enrich reflection in both historical and systematic theology."--Richard B. Gaffin, Jr., professor of biblical and systematic theology, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia

HEAVEN TAKEN BY STORM
Thomas Watson

Many today believe that the Christian life is rather easy to both obtain and live. But the Puritans saw it as warfare, as wrestling, as 'holy violence,' to use their term. The Apostle Paul spoke of beating his own body into subjection.

And this holy violence is to be brought not only against one's own self, but against Satan, the world and heaven ttoo. And in this confrontation we must use the weapons God has given us - reading the Word, hearing the Word, prayer, meditation, self-examination, and the due observance of the Lord's Day.

Allow Thomas Watson to be your guide through the minefield that lies between us and heaven.
