Book of the Month

click for details | | SECRETS OF HAPPY HOME LIFE J.R. Miller
"Secrets of Happy Home Life" by J.R. Miller is a little book that can transform every home that it enters. The Spirit of God blesses the truth and nothing but the truth, and this booklet is filled with truth. It was first published in 1894, and immediately found its way into homes and hearts all over the world. Tens of thousands of copies were printed and stories came from far and wide about marriages that were preserved from certain destruction by the simple, biblical instruction found in these pages.
Jerry Bridges said, "Secrets of Happy Home Life is one of the most helpful and heartwarming books I have read on family relationships. Though written a hundred years ago, its message is timeless and much needed today."
"This little volume is priceless! Miller rightly and forthrightly tells his readers that Christ is the secret of a happy home life; but he doesn't leave that as a nebulous concept. Miller breaks this truth into bite-sized pieces of spiritual instruction that bring soul nourishment on every page. The approach is truly pastoral. The memorable phrases teach practically, convict consistently, and comfort surely. This is a fine tool for the Holy Spirit to use in bringing the grace of Christ to the homes of believers. Pastors: Get it into the hands of every one of your church families. You won't regret the investment!" - Bill Shishko, Pastor, Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Franklin Square, NY
Don Whitney added, "The language of this little book is quaint, but its truths are timeless. Miller wrote with a warm, sweet-spirited style."
Randy Stinson, of The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, said, "This is an absolute 'must read' for engaged couples, newlyweds, and marriage veterans, who will all benefit from this insightful and instructive little book."

"As we approach the occasion of the 500th anniversary of John Calvin's birth, and eagerly anticipate the production of the many excellent historical and theological works that will mark the first half-millennium of Reformed Christianity, this set of essays from the beginning of the 20th century may serve both to edify us and to whet our appetites for more. One will find giants among the contributors (from Reed to Johnson to Orr to Warfield to D'Aubigne), and topics of abiding interest." - Dr. Ligon Duncan
"Any title on such themes, with not a few eminent authors contributing, has to be a book we shall all value seeing." - Iain H. Murray
"We are on the verge of the 500th anniversary of the birth of the French Reformer John Calvin, and it is good to look back at the way his life and ministry were appreciated at the 400th anniversary of his birth. It can be rightly said that if Calvin had not lived, the entire course of Western history, and in particular that of the Church, would be very different, and these essays document that fact very clearly. Against various attacks that had been leveled against the great Reformer in the nineteenth century, these essays demonstrate the tremendous good that Calvin did for the Church and the way that his life was truly lived to the glory of the God of Scripture. Though a hundred years old, these essays are still vital reading for anyone interested in the legacy of Calvin and the ongoing impact of his thought." - Dr. Michael Haykin
"As we swiftly approach the 500th anniversary of Calvin's birth and anticipate another flurry of books and essays in honor of the Genevan Reformer, 'Calvin Memorial Addresses' is a good place to begin our celebration. The contributors and the contributions warrant this reprint edition. The greatest worth of this reprint, aside from reminding readers of Calvin and his contributions to the church and the world, is the showcasing of past scholars who ought to be remembered and still have worthwhile things to say to the Church. Honor the LORD as you celebrate the 400th anniversary of Calvin's birth again." -Dr. C.N. Willborn
The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States gathered in Savannah, GA in May 1909 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin. After an Introduction by Charles S. Wood, there are a full dozen excellent addresses that cover the incredible influence one man has had on the history of the world for centuries.
The grace of God is evident in the life and labors of John Calvin, and this amazing grace is magnified in each and every address that was given nearly 100 years ago.

"Our dear Father in heaven has filled His blessed book - the Bible - with interesting histories of the lives and characters of great and good men who have been His servants and followers from the beginning of the world; so that we, who live in these later times, may learn of their thoughts and actions and be made better by them. The Apostle James shows us the use God intends we shall make of these histories, when he says: 'Take, my brethren, the prophets for an example.' This means we should study the lives of the holy men of whom we read in the Bible, until we get the model points of their character impressed upon our minds; and then by the grace of God we may be able to bring these virtues forth again in our own hearts and lives.
"The author of this book has endeavored to place before young readers, in a clear and forcible manner, the admirable traits of character possessed by some of the great men of the Bible. The advantages to be gained by following these BIBLE MODELS are plainly shown by many interesting stories drawn from actual life. It is hoped that not only young, but older persons also will find pleasure as well as profit in the pages of this volume; and that, perhaps, as they become familiar with the lofty examples held up to their gaze, their hearts will go out in earnest prayer that 'God may give them grace to follow His blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, so they may come to the unspeakable joys which he has prepared for those who unfeignedly love Him.'" - from the Author's Preface

In partnership with the Dutch Reformed Translation Society, Baker Academic is proud to offer in English for the very first time the fourth and final volume of Herman Bavinck's complete Reformed Dogmatics, now also available as a four-volume set. This volume includes the combined indexes for all four volumes. In addition, editor John Bolt introduces each chapter and has enhanced the footnotes and bibliography. This masterwork will appeal not only to scholars, students, pastors, and laity interested in Reformed theology but also to research and theological libraries.
"Bavinck's Dutch masterwork was the Everest of which the textbooks by Louis Berkhof and Auguste Leoerf were foothills and Berkouwer's studies in dogmatics were outliers. Like Augustine, Calvin, and Edwards, Bavinck was a man of giant mind, vast learning, ageless wisdom and great expository skill. Solid but lucid, demanding but satisfying, broad and deep and sharp and stabilizing, Bavinck's magisterial Reformed Dogmatics remains after a century the supreme achievement of its kind."--J. I. Packer, professor of theology, Regent College
"Arguably the most important systematic theology ever produced in the Reformed tradition. I have found it to be the most valuable. English-speaking theology throughout the 20th century until now has been singularly impoverished by not having at its disposal a translation of Bavinck's Dogmatiek in its entirety. The appearance of these volumes will be an incomparable boon for generations of students, pastors, teachers, and others, serving to deepen understanding and enrich reflection in both historical and systematic theology."--Richard B. Gaffin, Jr., professor of biblical and systematic theology, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia

"Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics has been the fountainhead of Reformed theology for the last hundred years. It is by far the most profound and comprehensive Reformed systematic theology of the twentieth century. The reader will be amazed by Bavinck's erudition, creativity, and balance. Bavinck is confessionally orthodox, but he recognizes the need to rethink the traditional formulations from Scripture in the context of contemporary discussion. I hope these volumes will have a large readership and will bring forth much theological and spiritual fruit."--John M. Frame, professor of systematic theology and philosophy, Reformed Theological Seminary

"Despite all the important contributions that Dutch Calvinists have made to North American Protestantism, Herman Bavinck remains an obscure figure, lagging behind the influential Abraham Kuyper. With the translation and republication of Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics, this unfortunate situation should change for the better. These four volumes demonstrate the importance and mastery of Bavinck's own contribution to Reformed theology, while providing a useful and striking point of comparison with the best-known twentieth-century Reformed dogmatics, that of Karl Barth. At a time when the scholastic nature of systematic theology has come under serious criticism, Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics reveals the advantage of careful and sustained reflection on Christian truth that is both faithful to the church and engaged with the academy. Readers will discover more than Bavinck the theologian in these volumes; they will learn about the God whom he worshiped and served."--D. G. Hart, author of The Lost Soul of American Protestantism

click for details | | THE FEAR OF GOD The Soul of Godliness John Murray
This material is taken from Murray's classic work on Biblical Ethics entitled PRINCIPLES OF CONDUCT. It is a wonderful introduction to a vital area that is largely ignored in our day. Although brief, as with all of Murray's writings, it is a very full and weighty piece of practical theology, that should end in doxology for all who read it with an open heart and a mind in subjection to Holy Scripture.
"Many of us owe more than we can say to the example and teaching of John Murray. He wrote nothing hurriedly and for the short term. These pages, as much as anything he prepared, take us to a most vital aspect of a true relationship with God.May they help another generation to be faithful servants of Christ!." - Iain Murray, Author of "The Life of John Murray"
"John Murray's booklet on the fear of God--a theme that desperately needs to be resurrected today--is the best short treatment of this subject anywhere in the English language. From his renowned opening sentence ('the fear of God is the soul of godliness'), to his emphasis on piety, and his careful exposition of the marks of the fear of God (a consciousness of the transcendent majesty and holiness of God, an all-pervasive sense of the presence of God, a dependence upon and responsibility to God, and a constant consciousness of relation to God), Murray's treatment is biblically balanced and nuanced. It confirms the need for obedience to God that is motivated by filial fear and underscores, as Murray says, that 'the eclipse of God, whether viewed as doctrine or as attitude, evidences the deterioration of faith in the living God.' Buy this booklet in bulk and give a copy to each of your friends. It can do them and the church immeasurable good." - Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids
"'Principles of Conduct' is Murray's masterpiece. It is as solid as Pike's Peak." James I. Packer
"Historically, and more importantly biblically, the fear of God has been regarded as essential to true devotion to God. But in recent years this foundational element of piety has been overlooked or even rejected as belonging to the era of the old covenant and not properly Christian (I actually read the latter sentiment in book by a popular North American author!) How welcome then to have John Murray's classic study of the fear of God available in this format. Read it and nourish your soul!" - Dr. Michael Haykin
"In his 'Principles of Conduct', Professor Murray's insights into Christian ethics are shaped by a careful integration of exegetical, biblical, systematic, and practical theology. The chapter on "The Fear of God," here published separately for the first time, is cut from the same cloth. Rightly seeing that the fear of the Lord is the first and most basic lesson in Christian ethics--the true beginning of godly wisdom and knowledge, Professor Murray conducts us into this inner sanctuary of the Christian life." - Dr. Robert Paul Martin
"'The fear of God is the soul of godliness.' These opening words of Professor Murray's chapter on this theme are like a bucket of ice water thrown into one's face in a day of cozy, comfortable, man-centered and casual Christianity. However they are true words. In this booklet Prof. Murray convincingly defines the fear of God and then demonstrates from the Old and New Testaments how central it is to any biblically framed experience of the Christian life. May God be pleased to use these pages to move many to rethink this central theme of the Word of God." - Pastor Albert N. Martin, Trinity Baptist Church, Montville, NJ
"The fear of God could be nothing less than the soul of rectitude. It is the apprehension of God's glory that constrains the fear of his name. It is that same glory that commands our totality commitment to him, totality trust and obedience. The fear of God is but the reflex in our consciousness of the transcendent perfection which alone could warrant and demand the totality of our commitment in love and devotion." - Professor John Murray
"Murray will be a reminder of what is ultimately important. He presents a needed distinction lacking in most presentations of the fear of God. A crippling, servile, always-looking-over-the-shoulder fear is unhealthy in the believer. We are God's sons and daughters; He loves us. Instead, we need a God-honoring, reverence of Him who produces the pursuit of, and the fruit of, godliness." - Dr. Mike Renihan
"With a wealth of biblical citations, Murray identifies the soul of godliness as a reverence for God as transcendently majestic and holy, constraining the forgiven sinner to adoration, love and obedience. Murray's writing on the subject is pervaded by the awe and filial devotion which he commends to us." - Dr. Sherman Isbell

click for details | | TWO MEN FROM MALTA A Shipwrecked Apostle and a Toronto Newspaperman Challenge Thoughtful Roman Catholics to Examine their Faith Joe Serge with Joel Nederhood
TWO MEN FROM MALTA--one of the men is the Apostle Paul, the other is Joe Serge, a Toronto newspaperman and columnist. In this book Serge describes his odyssey from Roman Catholicism to the faith of the Reformation.
Serge invited Joel Nederhood, a theologian and long time radio and television teacher, to join him in examining primary Roman teaching such as "the Mass," "Mary," "the Papacy," and the essence of salvation itself. Dr. Nederhood, whose published works include THIS SPLENDID JOURNEY and THE FOREVER PEOPLE, has produced a highly readable and provocative examination of the biblical material that Roman Catholic believers should consider as they evaluate their faith position.
This book conveys the high sense of freedom that Joe Serge experiences now that he has embraced the biblical teachings of salvation by grace alone, apart from works. The book also conveys sincere respect for Roman Catholics who will read it. And there can be no question that Joe Serge is praying that many who read TWO MEN FROM MALTA will join him in following the biblical teaching that reveals that Christ's works, not ours, will bring sinners into glory.
"Three groups of people should read this book: first, Roman Catholics who want to know why educated people like Joe Serge would want to become protestants; second, nominal Christians who are curious to know what America's favorite hymn, "Amazing Grace" is all about; and third, evangelicals who are being tempted by contemporary theologies to question basic doctrines in their reformed heritage. Guided in his study of the Bible by his spiritual mentor, the radio/television evangelist, Joel Nederhood, Serge tells the story of his spiritual pilgrimage in a clear and winsome manner. The book is a solidly biblical and heart-warming testimony to God's saving grace in Jesus Christ." -Dr. Roger S. Greenway, Calvin Theological Seminary , Grand Rapids, Michigan
"We are very much in need of winsome, popular, and yet not simplistic critiques of the errors of the Roman Catholic understanding of the Scriptures and the way of salvation. This easy-to-read short volume by Joe Serge and Joel Nederhood helps fill that need. It not only provides the human interest account of one man's pilgrimmage from a religion of works to a religion of real grace, but it also beautifully depicts the night versus day difference between man-made religion and faith that truly ascribes all glory to God. It's a great gift to give to Roman Catholic friends and neighbors because it so helpfully explains the gift of eternal life and acceptance with God through the person and work of Jesus Christ alone and received by faith alone. I commend it highly!" - Pastor Bill Shishko

click for details | | LUTHER'S SCOTTISH CONNECTION James Edward McGoldrick
"Although even those who have only a casual acquaintance with Scottish history usually have some appreciation for the significance of John Knox, few seem to realize that he was not literally the father of the Reformation in his homeland. There were several precursors of Knox who laid the foundations upon which he built, and those forerunners were, for the most part, disciples of Martin Luther. It is the purpose of this book to identify the most prominent Scottish Lutherans and to relate the roles they played in the first phase of Scotland's Protestant history." - from the Author's Preface
"Understandably scholars have tended to view the Reformed theologians like Calvin as being the major influences on the development of the Scottish Church. But in the early days of the Reformation in Scotland, it was Luther and his message that was the prime influence. McGoldrick's fine study sets the record straight. And I am glad to see it back in print." - Dr. Michael A.G. Haykin
"I have read McGoldrick's work! I started to glance over it and found I couldn't put it down. It is Fantastic! He fills in a lot of background to the Scottish Reformation that most works leave out. Usually the Lollard connection is mildly hinted at and the story of Hamilton is told only in so far as to explain why he was burned. McGoldrick gives a tremendous amount of information that very few writers have dealt with and he does it in such a fresh way!" - Pastor Robert Elliott
"Professor McGoldrick offers an important corrective to students of the Reformation who casually link Knox, Calvin and the Scottish kirk. The causes of the Scottish Reformation include Lollardy, Erasmian humanism, and most notably, Lutheranism, decades before Calvin's ideas found a fertile reception. Patrick Hamilton's treatise titled Patrick's Places (included in the Appendix) affirmed a strong Pauline doctrine of Justification and provided the theological foundation for the Reformation in Scotland before his martyrdom in 1528. We are all indebted to Dr. McGoldrick for his important research on the origins of the Scottish Reformation and the clarity with which it is presented.." - Dr. Dale Walden Johnson

"The chapters of this book first appeared in the Reformed Church Magazine (1893-1895). They then received favorable comment. Since that Magazine ceased publication, there have been so many inquiries for them that it is evident they met a felt want in the Church, and the Sunday-school Board of the Reformed Church in the United States has undertaken their publication in this volume. The author has added several chapters to those that appeared in the Magazine. It is hoped that the lives of these Reformed saints will stimulate the ladies of our Church to greater interest in our splended Church history, and to greater activity as in missions and the practical worj of the Church, in which they already excel." - from the Author's Preface

From the lawgiver Moses to the apostle John, and from the early church fathers to modern defenders of the faith, there has marched onto the stage of human history a long line of godly men, a triumphant parade of spiritual stalwarts who have upheld the doctrines of grace. In this book, the first in the five-volume A Long Line of Godly Men series, Dr. Steven J. Lawson takes readers on a heart-stirring survey of the Scriptures to show that the Bible in its entirety teaches the doctrines of grace.
Volume 1 (Foundations of Grace) covers 1400 BC thru 100 AD, tracing the doctrines of grace throughout Scripture. This volume becomes the foundation for what comes in the future.
 Foreword by: Dr. John MacArthur
 Afterword by: Dr. R.C. Sproul
"As Dr. Steve Lawson's reconnaissance of this matter so clearly shows, God's sovereignty is manifest throughout sacred Scripture. . . . When you finish reading this book, I would wonder and worry if you continue to persist in denying the full measure of GodĘs sovereignty in our salvation." - Dr. R.C. Sproul.
"The doctrines of grace are often misunderstood and mischaracterized. This helpful new book explains them thoughtfully and well. May God use it for His glory and others' good." - Dr. D. James Kennedy
"Steve Lawson understands that the text of the Bible presents a consistent witness to God's sovereignty and the panoramic display of God's glory. All this is evident in his preaching ministry and in his writing ministry as well." - R. Albert Mohler, Jr.
"Steven Lawson clearly and comprehensively lays the scriptural groundwork for the doctrines of grace." - Dr. John MacArthur
"Gripped in mind and heart by the twin truths of God's total sovereignty and His amazing grace, Steve Lawson compellingly traces these themes from the beginning to the end of Scripture. . . . Foundations of Grace shows, in a multitude of ways, that the Scriptures are useful 'for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.' - Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson

"Through an introductory study of John Calvin's preaching, Steve Lawson provides a practical Homiletics 1 refresher course that can be read in one evening, but should be read annually for lifelong impact. Factual yet stimulating, simple yet penetrating, 'The Expository Genius of John Calvin' contains many scriptural and theocentric golden nuggets and hands-on practical tips for beginning expositors and seasoned preachers alike. May God use it to revitalize Christ-centered and Spirit-empowered applicatory preaching in our day." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke
"Preachers reading this book will be moved to take to heart Calvin's encompassion belief in the sovereignty of God's Word - as to its total sufficiency and massive potency. Further, they will be inspired to pursue the deep, enriching paths of lectio continua. This is a beautifully written, powerful, and convincing book. It is a must read for all who aspire to preach the word." - R. Kent Hughes
"In this book, Dr. Steve Lawson has masterfully presented us with thirty-two keynotes that made Calvin the best preacher of the Reformation, all of them centered around the Word of God preached expositorily. I would make this book recommended reading in courses such as homiletics and missions for any serious pastor and student." - Dr. Alonzo Ramirez
"An infectious appreciation of the preaching of John Calvin from the pen of Steven Lawson. No one reading this volume can fail to appreciate the debt we owe the 'Genevan Reformer.' Lawson has consulted the best of current scholarship and has produced a comprehensive distillation of the contours of the Reformer's preaching and, with it, a compelling advocacy of consecutive expository preaching. A magnificent achievement." -Dr. Derek Thomas

click for details | | MARY BUNYAN The Remarkable Story of the Blind Daughter of John Bunyan, the Immortal Dreamer Sallie Rochester Ford with New Introduction by Dennis Gundersen
This is the deeply moving story of the home life of the Bunyan family, as John, the father, languished in prison as a result of his preaching as a Baptist pastor in England during the 17th century. The account is historical fiction, told largely from the vantage point of his blind daughter, Mary, his first-born child and constant joy.
Mary became Bunyan's loyal, constant companion on every occasion when the authorities would permit her to visit her father at the prison, and his persistent petitioner for mercy and release before King Charles. This stirring account of how a young girl's faith in God grew, rather than diminished, during times of persecution, is an inspiring example of peculiar beauty for all believers today.

 | | | | SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF A GOOD GOD Reconciling Divine Judgment and Mercy David Clotfelter
"Sinners in the Hands of a Good God is a wonderfully clear, readable, understandable study of the sovereignty of God and the problem of evil. David Clotfelter powerfully expounds the biblical doctrines of sin and grace - something desperately needed in a generation when both concepts have become terribly vague and confused in most people's minds." - Dr. John MacArthur
"One of the most winsome, discerning and compelling presentations of the seriousness of sin and the grace of God. It is among the few potentially life-changing books - to believe it and live a careless Christian life should be an impossibility." - Iain H. Murray
 Are heaven and hell real?
How does God's election correspond to our freedom?
Why did Jesus have to die?
 Why doesn't God save everybody?
These are all questions raised in Sinners in the Hands of a Good God, and biblically answered by author David Clotfelter. Constrasting the theologies of Jonathan Edwards with George MacDonald, the author reconciles the difficult doctrines of divine judgment and predestination.

click for details | | GRACE AND GLORY Sermons Preached in the Chapel of Princeton Theological Seminary Geerhardus Vos with Introduction by R. Scott Clark
Geerhardus Vos (1862-1949) was an American, Reformed theologian and one of the most distinguished representatives of the Princeton Theology. He is sometimes called the father of Reformed Biblical Theology. Vos moved and joined the faculty of the Princeton Theological Seminary, where he became its first Professor of Biblical Theology. At Princeton, he taught alongside J. Gresham Machen and B. B. Warfield and authored his most famous works, including: Pauline Eschatology (1930) and Biblical Theology: Old and New Testaments (1948).
These sermons were preached at the chapel of Princeton Seminary and first published in 1922. These are not mere outlines or sketches of sermons, but are full manuscripts of the addresses delivered by the revered professor before his students and fellow faculty members.
John Murray said of him, "Dr. Vos is, in my judgment, the most penetrating exegete it has been my privilege to know, and I believe, the most incisive exegete that has appeared in the English-speaking world in this century."
"If there is one volume (by Vos) that deserves to be read by laity and clergy alike it is this little collection of chapel messages - Read these sermons as illustrations of how Vos read Scripture. Let him take you by the hand, as it were, to the text and through the text of Scripture, to the Word incarnate." - R. Scott Clark, from the New Introduction
"Often more respected than understood, Vos continues to fascinate and enthrall. These sermons reveal the penetrating exegetical insights of some of the most fascinating and powerful sermons ever preached. A century later, they continue to make us gasp in wonder and admiration, driving to read and then re-read these lines to behold the treasure that lies beneath the surface." - Derek W. H. Thomas
"In the words of F. F. Bruce on the cover of The Pauline Eschatology, these sermons, too, are '... indeed outstandingly great ... a rare exegetical feast.' They also remain a source of deep edification for the church today as they will for still future generations." - Richard B. Gaffin, Jr., Charles Krahe Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia
The uniqueness of Vos's emphasis on the centrality of the covenantal work of Jesus Christ in history and our possession of that work through His mediation draws us back time and again to his powerful and passionate sermons. Translated to the realm of glory itself through the proclamation of the accomplished work of our covenant Lord, and by the gift of His Spirit, we partake of unparalleled communion with God and possess Him as our highest treasure presently in Christ as our covenant God. Short of the consummation we have made His glory and joy in His people our chief end in this pilgrim life.
In his first sermon, "The Wonderful Tree," Vos sets the theme of his entire collection of sermons, the gift of Jehovah to His creatures to be their delight and personal possession through the covenant. In "Heavenly-Mindedness," Vos explicates the nature of true faith as that which lays hold of God Himself in glory, living in the hope of the eternal life of God in the city of God by resurrection.
"In an age rife with practical theology and anti-doctrinal Christianity, Vos calls us back to the Word to allow it to speak for itself. While Vos is perhaps lesser known as a preacher, here in 'Grace and Glory' we get a taste of what one dear saintly lady described as spiritual 'blueberry cheesecake.' Enjoy!!" - R. Daniel Knox, Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Sewickley, PA

click for details | | HEAVEN TAKEN BY STORM Thomas Watson
Many today believe that the Christian life is rather easy to both obtain and live. But the Puritans saw it as warfare, as wrestling, as 'holy violence,' to use their term. The Apostle Paul spoke of beating his own body into subjection.
And this holy violence is to be brought not only against one's own self, but against Satan, the world and heaven ttoo. And in this confrontation we must use the weapons God has given us - reading the Word, hearing the Word, prayer, meditation, self-examination, and the due observance of the Lord's Day.
Allow Thomas Watson to be your guide through the minefield that lies between us and heaven.

click for details | | THE SAINTS' EVERLASTING REST A Treatise of the Blessed State of the Saints in their Enjoyment of God in Glory Richard Baxter
Throughout his life, Richard Baxter suffered from poor health. During one of the most serious periods of illness, he began writing The Saints' Everlasting Rest, to provide fitting meditations on the theme of heaven. It was published in 1650 and has become one of the best-known of all Puritan writings, and a rich source of comfort and instruction about eternal realities. Baxter (1615-1691) was a leading Puritan in England, whose marvelous ministry in the city of Kidderminster was used of God to dramatically transform the town. He is well-known for his over 60 books.
His writings, says J.I. Packer, are "brilliant , passionate, eloquent, honest, open-hearted, sharpsighted, and wholly devoted to the glory of God and the good of others..." They display a "flair for unselfconscious, self -revealing intimacy on paper." William Bates noted in Baxter's writing, "...a vigorous pulse...that keeps the reader awake and attentive."

click for details | | FAMILY WORSHIP FOR THE CHRISTMAS SEASON Ray Rhodes, Jr.
"In a day when having regular family worship is no longer a foregone conclusion (even among conservative Evangelicals), Ray Rhodes provides a wonderful impetus to start: a month of clear, biblical, practical devotions celebrating the birth of King Jesus. Hopefully, those who begin this Christmas using this excellent resource will continue gathering daily at the family altar throughout the coming year." - David W. Bailey, Ph.D., Author - Speaking the Truth in Love: The Life and Legacy of Roger Nicole
"Ray Rhodes has written a wonderfully creative book on family worship for the Christmas season. For a father or mother to take their children through these precious truths would create a fond memory that the children would have for the rest of their life. The book is doctrinally sound, well written, and greatly honoring to our Lord. I'm going to order three copies right now!" - Martha Peace, Biblical Counselor and author of 'The Excellent Wife'
"The Christmas season is a great time for daily family worship. If you've never enjoyed family worship on a consistent basis, there's no better time to start. Whether your family already enjoys the biblical and historic Christian practice of family worship or you're just beginning, consider using Ray Rhodes' engaging Family Worship for the Christmas Season this December." - Dr. Donald S. Whitney , author of "Spiritual Disciplines of the Christian Life' and 'Family Worship: In the Bible, in History, and in Your Home.'
"Author and speaker Ray Rhodes gives parents some expert help with these insightful and truth-filled devotional exercises for family worship during the Christmas season. Make December different this year by trying them out with your family. This book can make a significant difference in your family's understanding of the incarnation." - Jim Elliff, Christian Communicators Worldwide
"It is rare to find solid Family Worship resources in our day, let alone one for the advent season. Ray Rhodes has provided an outstanding tool for busy fathers during this opportune time of year. May God powerfully use it in the godly instruction of our families and for the generations to come!" - Pastor Jerry Marcellino, author of 'Rediscovering the Lost Treasure of Family Worship'
"The Incarnation of Jesus Christ is one of the most important events in the history of the world. Too many years families get so tangled in the trappings of Christmas, however, that they miss its true wonder. Ray Rhodes has written a wonderful book that elegantly encourages and practically helps families draw near to each another as they draw near to the Lord in celebrating his birth. I highly recommend it." - John Crotts, pastor and author of 'Mighty Men: the Starter's Guide to Leading Your Family', 'Craftsmen: Christ-centered Proverbs for Men', and co-author with Martha Peace of 'Tying the Knot Tighter'.
