Reformed Dogmatics, Volume 1
Prolegomena
Herman Bavinck; John Bolt, ed.; John Vriend, trans

Theologians have long appreciated Herman Bavinck's four-volume masterpiece, Gereformeerde Dogmatiek, published in 1895-99, for its comprehensive treatment of dogmatic theology. Unfortunately, this magnum opus from the great Reformed theologian has only been available in Dutch, and therefore has been inaccessible to most readers. Now, thanks to the Dutch Reformed Translation Society and the work of translator John Vriend and editor John Bolt, the first volume of Bavinck's magisterial Reformed Dogmatics is available in English for the first time. Bolt's tireless work updating the documentation augments this significant work. 704 page hardcover (Vol. 3 in 2005, Vol. 4 in 2006)

14 hardcovers from Baker.

C.H. Spurgeon said, "Placed by the side of the great masters, Barnes is a lesser light, but taking his work for what it is and professes to be, no minister can afford to be wirthout it, and this is no small praise for works which were only intended for the Sunday School teachers."

THE GOLDEN BOOKLET OF THE TRUE CHRISTIAN LIFE
John Calvin

Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life has inspired readers around the world for more than four centuries.

This classic devotional will guide you on how to apply the Christian faith in a balanced way to mind, heart, and hand. Originally part of John Calvin's Institutes, it covers themes such as obedience, self-denial, the significance of the cross, and how believers should live their lives today.

Rather than focusing on contemplative other-worldliness, the Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life stresses the importance of a devotedly active Christian life. In style and spirit, it is much like Augustine's Confessions, Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, or Thomas a Kempis's Imitation of Christ. Its intense practicality, however, sets it apart, making it easily accessible for anyone seeking to carry out Christian values in everyday life.

The translator, Henry J. Van Andel, competently preserved the colorful language and direct style of which John Calvin was a recognized master.

THE NATIONAL PREACHER:
Revival Sermons from the Second Great Awakening
Volumes One and Two (June 1826 - May 1828)
Edited by Austin Dickinson

This is a marvelous volume that contains some of the best sermons preached during a period of wide-spread revival in the young country of America. Rev. Austin Dickinson was burdened to gather sermons from able evangelical ministers "prepared in some of their happiest moments of thought and feeling, which, if concentrated in a Work of this kind, might reflect light on the desolate places, as well as the churches of our land."

"This is certainly a valuable collection of sermons preached before the end of the Second Great Awakening period and by eminent men. Some of the names are now unknown to us, others have come down through history as preachers who were instruments in great blessing. This now rare volume cannot but quicken desire for awakening in our own day and it shows very clearly the kind of truths and the nature of the preaching that was so used of God. In a day of many books this is one that has to stand out in importance."

- Iain H.Murray

"The National Preacher provides great preaching from great preachers on a great diversity of timeless subjects. Every minister should read and study this treasure trove of sermons prayerfully." - Joel R. Beeke

The response was truly extraordinary, and commencing in June 1826, these sermons sold into the hundreds of thousands and traveled to the ends of the earth. Less than ten years later the following testimony came from the Sandwich Islands:

"The National Preacher deserves the confidence of the world. May this high commissioned messenger of Christ be received with thankfulness and joy by tens of millions of our race. May the Divine Author of all valuable gifts in the church copiously shed down the graces of his Spirit upon the contributors to this evangelical publication, that their writings may be worthy of the enlightened age in which we live, and such as hundreds of millions may be edified to read, when the pens of the writers are exchanged for harps of gold."

Strong support poured in from Princeton Theological Seminary, Yale College, the President and Professors at Amherst College, and Asahel Nettleton, who said , "I have read, as I have had opportunity, the Numbers of the National Preacher with great satisfaction. I regard it as a work peculiarly desirable to Clergymen, and, at the same time, as worthy of a place in every intelligent family."

CALVINISM IN HISTORY:
A Political, Moral & Evangelizing Force
Nathaniel S. McFetridge

This little gem is filled with myriads of powerful testimonies concerning the Political, Moral and Evengelizing Force of the Doctrines of Grace.

"I do not know of any other book that sets forth so effectively and yet in such a brief form the real nature of Calvinism and the effect that it has had in history." Loraine Boettner

"This is a readable and happy account of Calvinism in history." Rousas Rushdoony

"This book sure-footedly guides us over the terrain of Calvinism's broadsweeping political and moral influence, concluding that Calvinism's evangelistic power results from the doctrines of grace, particularly justification by faith alone." Joel Beeke

It is a privilege for Solid Ground to bring this book back into print with the sincere desire that it will travel throughout the world and bear witness to the truth of the great doctrines of Augustine and Calvin.

HEAVEN UPON EARTH
Jesus, The Best Friend in the Worst Times
James Janeway

James Janeway (1636-1674) was born in Hertfordshire, the son of a minister, at the end of 1636. He was educated at Christ's College, Oxford, and spent time as a private tutor in a home, as is true of many of the Puritans. He is listed as one of the ejected ministers of 1662. In 1672 his admirers built a large meeting house for him near London, where it is said that "he had a very numerous auditory, and a great reformation was wrought amongst many." But Janeway's popularity so enraged the Church of England that several times they threatened to shoot him, which was actually attempted on at least two occasions. On one of these occasions, Janeway was shot at, and the bullet pierced his hat, but did not harm his body. Soldiers destroyed the building in which he preached, but his congregation simply built another, larger one to accomodate all those who came to hear him preach.

As was true of many Puritan ministers, Janeway was afflicted with melancholy (depression), contracted tuberculosis, and died in his 38th year. The book for which he is most known is A Token for Children, in which he collected personal accounts of the conversions of a number of children in his parish, and published it. It became an effective evangelistic tool, and was the most widely read book in nurseries in England next to the Bible and Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. The New England preacher Cotton Mather regarded that book so highly that he wrote his own version of it and called it A Token for the Children of New England.

The cover image is the painting of The Great Fire of London from 1666 which took place at the very time Janeway was delivering these addresses. The complete sub-title of this Puritan masterpiece is: Jesus, the Best Friend in the Worst Times, being an earnest exhortation to get acquainted with God, as the only way to real good and blessedness.

THE COMPLETE WORKS OF THOMAS MANTON
Thomas Manton

"A MOUNTAIN OF SOUND THEOLOGY." - C.H. Spurgeon on The Works of Manton

This 22 Volume Hardcover Set is smyth-sewn, shrink-wrapped on acid free paper and boxed as a complete set in a double wall container for special protection.

You can view the contents of the volumes by looking at the link on this page: Index for the Original 22 Volumes.

"The renowned Thomas Manton (1620-1677), whose writings have long been prized by thousands, was known first and foremost as a great preacher. In a day when good preaching is sorely lacking, we need the reprint of his Complete Works, in which twenty of his twenty-two volumes are sermons. These sermons are the legacy of a powerful preacher devoted to the systematic teaching and application of God's Word. Whether he is expounding the Lord's Prayer, Psalm 119, Isaiah 53, James, or Jude, Manton presents us with the best that English Puritans had to offer in careful, solid, warmhearted exposition of the Scriptures." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, author of MEET THE PURITANS

"This valuable set of Puritan writings only becomes available once every few decades when an adventuresome publisher decides to invest a great deal of time and money to offer this gift to Christ's church. It has only been reprinted twice in the last 150 years, not counting the current edition. Do not fail to obtain a copy of this set, and think of giving one to your pastor as an act of gratitude for his faithfulness. And then be a reader of these wonderful books, not a collector only." - Dr. Don Kistler, The Northampton Press

"While less theological than Owen or Goodwin, and less thematic than Flavel or Watson, Manton excels in exposition. One never fails to find him dealing with the text. His homiletical divisions are both enlightening and entertaining. One finds himself saying, 'Of course, why didn't I think of that?' Among the Puritans he is the best confluence of sense and sententiousness. While not modern, his comments, unlike the moderns, are a happy mix of bones, muscles, and heart." - Pastor Tom Lyon, Providence Reformed Baptist Church, University Place, WA

"I have been blessed tremendously by Manton in electronic media. There have been many times, however, that I longed for the books. There is a tactile need to touch those things we admire: we hug our spouses, hold our children, shake hands with friends and read our books. I look forward to a deeper acquaintance with a friend and mentor, Mr. Thomas Manton. SGCB is commended for their forsight and follow-through." - Dr. Mike Renihan, pastor, Heritage Baptist Church, Worcester, MA

"Thomas Manton led his family in Bible reading, memorization and explanation. If we learn anything from Manton's preaching it is that he preached with clarity. Certainly this was his approach to family worship as well. For Manton and the Puritans the important thing was to be clear concerning the gospel of our Lord. Manton was a "Pastor-Theologian" who demonstrated courage of life, precision in preaching and faithfulness in ministry. From a godly home, to the University, to prison, to a lifetime of ministry and devotion to family--Manton was a giant whose light still shines through his writings. Solid Ground Christian Books is bringing to Pastors, churches, and families a theological feast that will be a family treasure to be passed on to future generations. I encourage your strong consideration of the "Works of Thomas Manton". - Ray Rhodes, Jr. is President of Nourished in the Word Ministries and Author of "Family Worship for the Christmas Season"

C.H. Spurgeon wrote, "While commenting upon the One Hundred and Nineteenth Psalm, I was brought into most intimate communion with Thomas Manton, who has discoursed upon that marvellous portion of Scripture with great fulness and power. I have come to know him so well that I could choose him out from among a thousand divines if he were again to put on his portly form, and display among modern men that countenance wherein was a 'great mixture of majesty and meekness.' His works occupy twenty-two volumes in the modern reprint: a mighty mountain of sound theology. They mostly consist of sermons; but what sermons! For solid, sensible instruction forcibly delivered, they cannot be surpassed. Manton is not brilliant, but he is always clear; he is not oratorical, but he is powerful; he is not striking, but he is deep. There is not a poor discourse in the whole collection: he is evenly good, constantly excellent. Ministers who do not know Manton need not wonder if they are themselves unknown."

J.C. Ryle wrote a lengthy Introduction to the edition printed in the 19th century. He concluded with these words:

"It only remains for me to express my earnest hope that this new edition of Manton's works may prove acceptable to the public, and meet with many purchasers and readers. If any one wants to buy a good specimen of a Puritan divine, my advice unhesitatingly is, ' Let him buy Manton.' We have fallen upon evil days both for thinking and reading. Sermons which contain thought and matter are increasingly rare. The inexpressible shallownesss, thinness, and superficiality of many popular sermons in this day is something lamentable and appalling. Readers of real books appear to become fewer and fewer every year. Newspapers, and magazines, and periodicals seem to absorb the whole reading powers of the rising generation. What it will all end in God only knows. The prospect before us is sorrowful and humiliating.

In days like these, I am thankful that the publishers of Manton's Works have boldly come forward to offer some real literary gold to the reading public. I earnestly trust that they will meet with the success which they deserve. If any recommendation of mine can help them in bringing out the writings of this admirable Puritan in a new form, I give it cheerfully and with all my heart."

THE DOCTRINES OF ELECTION AND JUSTIFCATION
A.W. PINK

"Election is a foundational doctrine. In the past, many of the ablest teachers were accustomed to commence their systematic theology with a presentation of the attributes of God, and then a contemplation of His eternal decrees; and it is our studied conviction, after perusing the writings of many of our moderns, that the method followed by their predecessors cannot be improved upon. God existed before man, and His eternal purpose long antedated His works in time. "Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world" (Acts 15:18). The divine councils went before creation. As a builder draws his plans before he begins to build, so the great Architect predestinated everything before a single creature was called into existence. Nor has God kept this a secret locked in His own bosom; it has pleased Him to make known in His Word the everlasting counsels of His grace, His design in the same, and the grand end He has in view."

So begins A.W. Pink in his classic defense of the Doctrine of Election. The book is firmly based upon Pink's renowned exposition of Scripture and covers the following heads:

1. Introduction - 2. Its Source - 3. Its Grand Original

4. Its Verity - 5. Its Justice - 6. Its Nature

7. Its Design - 8. Its Manifestation - 9. Its Perception

10. Its Blessedness - 11. Its Opposition - 12. Its Publication

This is a great book for personal study of this weighty subject and it is a great book to give to someone who is wrestling with this grand but mysterious truth.

In addition to the excellent material on Election, Part Two of this book is called The Doctrine of Justification.

THE INSTITUTES OF THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION
John Calvin, Edited by John McNeill

This is the definitive English-language edition of one of the monumental works of the Christian church. Under Dr. McNeill's personal supervision labored a whole corps of expert Latinists and Calvin scholars. All previous editions, in Latin, French, German, and English, have been collated; references and notes have been verified, corrected, and expanded; and new bibliographies have been added. The translator and his associates have taken great care to preserve the rugged strength and vividness of Calvin's writing. They have not, however, hesitated to break up overly long sentences to conform to modern English usage or, whenever possible, to render heavy Latinate theological terms in simple language. The result is a translation that achieves a high degree of accuracy and at the same time is eminently readable.

THE CHURCH OF CHRIST
A Treatise on the Nature, Powers, Ordinances, Discipline, and Government of the Christian Church
James Bannerman

"I do heartily encourage you to re-publish this unique work by James Bannerman on 'The Church of Christ.' Especially in our day of great ignorance about the subject of the authority of the Church, this volume is inestimable. It bears close study by elders, seminarians (and seminaries!), and by all others who sincerely desire to honor Christ, the only King and Head of the Church." - Pastor Bill Shishko

"James Bannerman's 'The Church of Christ' is the most extensive, standard, solid, Reformed treatment of the doctrine of the church that has ever been written. It is indisputably the classic in its field. Every minister and elder should own a copy, and church members would also be much better informed if they perused it carefully. How many church problems would be alleviated if churches used Bannerman as their primary textbook for their understanding of what the church is and for their modus operandi! --Joel R. Beeke

Volume One of this two volume work (full title: The Church of Christ: a treatise on the nature, powers, ordinances, discipline, and government of the Christian Church) deals with the nature and power of the Church, containing a lengthy explanation of the Church in its relation to the state, which is arguably one of the best treatments of this topic available. From there it deals with matters in regard to which Church power is exercised (i.e. in regard to doctrine, ordinances, the instrumentality and time of public worship; with a discussion of holy days, Independency, and confessions). Volume Two continues where Volume One left off, providing a lengthy section on the sacraments, covering the parties in whom the right to exercise church power is vested, examining crucial points concerning Christian liberty, comparing the Popish, Prelatic, Independent, Congregational and Presbyterian systems, etc. Nine appendices deal with a wide range of practical topics including union between churches, Church/State relations, ordination, and valuable notes on the literature related to this subject.

Iain Murray, a prominent scholar and co-founder of the Reformed publishing house, The Banner of Truth Trust, has said of The Church of Christ that "for those who wish to study the doctrine of the Church in its several aspects as it was held by the majority of the Reformers, Puritans, Covenanters and leaders of 'The Third Reformation,' it will prove an invaluable textbook."

This is considered the standard work on the doctrine of the Church.

THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD
A.W. PINK

The timeless appeal of this classic book, written by a preacher with a worldwide ministry during the first half of the twentieth century, demonstrates the deep hunger for a saving knowledge of God present in each generation. Arthur Pink sought to give readers not just a theoretical knowledge of God but pointed them toward a personal relationship of yielding to him and living according to his biblical precepts. Pink's book explores attributes such as God's decrees, foreknowledge, sovereignty, holiness, grace, and mercy, among many others, all packaged in a style especially useful for pastors, teachers, and Bible students. Our God who is above all names cannot be found through human searching alone, Pink teaches, but can be known only as he is revealed by the Holy Spirit through his living Word.

PARTICULAR GRACE: A Defense of God's Sovereignty in Salvation

PARTICULAR GRACE: A Defense of God's Sovereignty in Salvation

This outstanding volume was originally published in Dutch at the end of the 19th century.

"Reformed believers will surely be impressed with the power of the author's language and argument, the breadth of his acquaintance with past and contemporary discussion, and the cumulative weight of his case. BIBLCAL THEOLOGY
John Owen

Owen characterizes evangelical theology as a gift of the Holy Spirit generating faith in Christ, holiness through Christ, and worship of Christ. The book includes a defense of the authority and proper interpretation of the Bible against the subjectivism of his day.

The major portion of this volume is a history of theology from Adam to Christ. It includes an appendix with OwenÆs Defense of Scripture against Fanaticism, affirming that the Bible is the perfect, authoritative, and complete Word of God. Owen considered this work his magnum opus.

"Published in Latin in 1661 as a contribution to international Reformed scholarship, this treatise draws on a very wide range of learning. The final part, in particular, where Owen characterizes evangelical theology as a gift of the Holy Spirit generating faith in Christ, holiness through Christ, and worship of Christ, is pure gold. To have it in English is a great boon. Those who have a taste for Owen, or for theology, or (best of all) for both, will read this Puritan proto-Biblical theology with joy." - J.I. Packer

WITH HEART AND MOUTH
An Exposition of the Belgic Confession
Daniel R. Hyde

"The Belgic Confession is not a systematic theology but the historic and systematic confession of faith by the Reformed churches. With this commentary Danny Hyde has done the Reformed churches a great service by placing our confession in its historical, theological, and ecclesiastical contexts again. By reading it in the light of those contexts, he brings it to life for us in our time. Anyone wishing to understand better the Belgic Confession on its own terms and as it has been received by the Reformed churches must consult this intelligent work." - R. Scott Clark

"It has been a long time since a Belgic Confession commentary of this caliber was last published in English. Biblical, historical, and erudite, Reverend Hyde helps the Confession speak freshly to our day. 'With Heart and Mouth' will be warmly welcomed by pastors called to teach and preach the Belgic Confession." - Wes Bredenhof

THE WORKS OF THOMAS ADAMS
Three Volume Hardcover Set
Thomas Adams

Thomas Adams (1583-1652) was a powerful preacher, a much-quoted writer, and an influential divine. Prominent leaders in church and state, such as John Donne and the earl of Pembroke, were among his friends.

Adams sermons have been admired since their first printing; the 'placed him beyond all comparison in the van of the preachers of England, and had something to do with shaping John Bunyan. His numerous works display great learning, classical and patristic. And are unique in their abundance of stories, anecdotes, aphorisms, and puns' (Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th edition).

Alexander B. Grosart wrote of him: "Thomas Adams stands in the forefront of our great English preachers. He is not as sustained as Jeremy Taylor, nor so continuously sparkling as Thomas Fuller, but he is surpassingly eloquent and brilliant, and much more thought-laden than either."

VOLUME ONE - Sermons on the Old Testament (526 pages)

There are 25 full sermons covering texts drawn from Genesis - Daniel.

VOLUME TWO - Sermons on the New Testament (578 pages)

There are 32 full sermons from Matthew - Hebrerws.

VOLUME THREE - Remaining Sermons on the New Testament and Meditations on the Apostles Creed (386 pages)

APPLES OF GOLD
An Anthology of Puritan Classics
John Mason, Thomas Adams, Thomas Wilcox, Richard Sibbes, Thomas Gataker & Robert Bolton

This anthology of Puritan writings mainly represents the smaller and less well known of them. They are precious gleanings from an immense literary output. The content has been updated slightly for easier reading. The volume is comprised of bound copies of 8 reprinted booklets, some not now available individually. A second bound volume is sadly now out of print. Hence the Apples of Gold booklets listed below give an indication in brackets of which volume they belong to. Each booklet has a full color cover and also a brief biographical sketch of the author.

This Hardcover Volume of 292 pages contains the following outstanding material:

MASON'S SAYINGS - John Mason

John Mason (1646-1694) has been termed 'a light in the pulpit and a pattern out of it'. His Sayings show the emphasis of his ministry was truly evangelical. He was the first to mould and popularise the English hymn, and in 1683 published his Spiritual Songs which were highly esteemed by Isaac Watts. This reprint comprises of a collection of sayings, both devout and practical, classified under useful headings. Also included are 2 of his hymns.

EVERLASTING MERCY - Thomas Adams

Thomas Adams (1583-1652) preached this sermon from Matthew 27:51,52 and entitled it "Majesty in Misery." This sermon is taken from THE WORKS OF THOMAS ADAMS (Volume Two), and displays the gifts that have been appreciated and admired ever since they were first printed nearly 400 years ago. The preaching of Adams had a great impact upon the life and preaching of John Bunyan.

IT IS WELL - John Hill

John Hill (1711-1746) preached this sermon from the words of the woman whose son was dead, and yet said, upon being questioned about her family said, "It is well." Hill examines her response and then launches into an excellent study of Submission to the Will of God.

HONEY OUT OF THE ROCK - Thomas Willcox

Thomas Willcox (1621-1687) was a Particular Baptist pastor in Southwark, London. This tract, written before the Great Fire of London, originally appeared under the full title, A Choice Drop of Honey from the Rock Christ, or, A Short Word of Advice to all Saints and Sinners, and was recommended by William Romaine in his day. Based on Psalm 81:16, it has proved valuable over the years and has been translated. It was a force for good in Finland in the 19th Century, where it sparked off a revival under the blessing of the Holy Spirit.

DIVINE MEDITATIONS - Richard Sibbes

Richard Sibbes (1577-1635) was a gifted Puritan preacher and writer. Here you have over 50 pages of Sibbes Mediatations on themes like: Affliction Sanctified; Brotherly Love; Conformity to Christ; Conscience; Conviction of Sin; Defence & Offence; Desertion; Effectual Calling; Evidence of Grace; Faith; God; Gifts & Their Use; Good Things; Grace; Growth in Grace; Heaven; Holy Desires; The Holy Spirit; Humility; Joy; Learning & Teaching; Love Toward God; Man's Chief End; The Means of Grace; Mercy; Man by Nature; Obedience; Prayer; Sin; Temptation; Thankfulness; Watchfulness;Wisdom; The Word of God. WORTH THE PRICE OF THE BOOK!

THE CHRISTIAN ON WATCH - Thomas Gataker

Thomas Gataker (1574-1654), Rector at Rotherhithe, published a total of 48 works and contributed the notes on Isaiah - Lamentations in connection with the KJV Bible translation project. This is an abridgement of The Spiritual Watch on the subject of Mark 13:37, "And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch."

HEART SURGERY - Robert Bolton

Robert Bolton (1572-1631) once heard the famous William Perkins preach and called him 'a barren empty fellow.' Yet later he was converted and became one of the despised Puritans himself. At age 36 he was presented with the living of Broughton in Northamptonshire, where he remained preaching and publishing the truth till the end of his life. 'Heart Surgery' is a sermon on Acts 2:37 "Now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart."

CHRIST'S PRE-EMINENCE - Tobias Crisp

Tobias Crisp (1600-1642), Rector at Brinkworth, Wiltshire was a well loved preacher of free grace. Inscribed on his pulpit in this village church can still be read 'Woe be unto me if I preach not the gospel'. It is a fitting motto for all preachers to be reminded of, and Crisp certainly acted upon it. The material in this booklet originally appeared as two sermons, and has been edited. The text is from Colossians 1:18 "that in all things he might have the pre-eminence".

THE NONSUCH PROFESSOR
In His Meridian Spleandor
William Secker

"The character described in this small volume, is unhappily a very uncommon one -- the consistent Christian. It is drawn more from the holy scriptures than from current living examples. Those persons, however, who are sincerely desirous of knowing and becoming such Christians, will derive advantage from a perusal of Secker's Nonsuch Professor. It is written for men of plain sense, and is adapted to the taste of no other reader. It is a book of practical godliness. Without that show of criticism, which is attractive to the scholar, it explains and applies the word of God to the heart and life of man; and without formal didactic discussion, it is replete with sentiments corresponding with the analogy of faith.

There is nothing to amuse or gratify the reader of taste; neither is it calculated to comfort the religionist, who builds his hope of immortality upon party zeal, or upon the inward feelings of an indistinct and uncertain experience. Mr. Secker points to Jesus as the rock upon which the soul rests, and insists upon good works as the only conclusive evidence, that the professor of religion can give of his having the faith of God's elect. The style, though destitute of taste and elegance, is perspicuous and pointed. The attentive reader cannot mistake the meaning of the author. We recommend the book to those who are desirous of being humbled and sanctified, as an excellent help in their endeavors to live to Him who died for them." - Alex. M'Leod, D.D. I.B. Romeyn, D.D., New York, 1815.

The bibliographer Lowndes says of this book: "A beautiful little work, worth its weight in gold. It cannot be read without interest and profit."

Reformed Confessions of the 16th and 17th Centuries in English Translation: 1523-1552
James T. Dennison

This is the first of a projected three-volume set that compiles numerous Reformed confessions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries translated into English. For many of these texts, this is their debut in the Anglo-Saxon vernacular. It provides the English-speaking world a richer and more comprehensive view of the emergence and maturation of Reformed theology in these foundational centuries; foundational centuries for Reformed thought and foundational summaries of Reformed doctrine for these centuries.

Each confessional statement is preceded by a brief introduction containing necessary historical and bibliographical background. The confessions are arranged chronologically, with this first volume presenting thirty-three documents covering the years 1523-1552.

"Through these volumes, James Dennison has provided an invaluable resource for those interested in the history of the Reformation. His compilation of statements of faith and doctrine from across Europe's Reformed churches includes many texts here translated into English for the first time. These volumes will greatly aid our understanding of the nature and development of the Reformed tradition in early modern Europe." - Dr. Graeme Murdock

"A magnificent achievement that witnesses powerfully to the rich development, harmony, and piety of the Reformed faith." - Dr. Joel Beeke

"This is a highly significant collection and substantial resource for the study of the rise and progress of the Reformed faith in the early modern era." - Dr. Richard Muller

AN UNDIVIDED LOVE
Loving and Living for Christ
Adolphe Monod, Translated and Edited by Constance K. Walker

"If Charles Spurgeon was the prince of preachers in Victorian England, Adolphe Monod was the noblest preacher of the French revivals. With unequalled passion and clarity he brings the unassuming listener not merely to the foot of the cross, but to Jesus himself, as he is clothed in the gospel. Even if you are expecting to be moved by these messages you will be surprised and deeply comforted by their simple and compelling power." - William Edgar, Professor, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA

"English-speaking Evangelicals are, as a general rule, quite ignorant of the spiritual riches found in other Evangelical cultures. That of the French Calvinist tradition, coming down from Calvin and men like Pierre Viret, is a good case in point. The most vibrant representative of this tradition in the nineteenth century has to be Adolphe Monod. His sermons are food for the soul, but he is hardly known by contemporary North American Evangelicals. May this excellent sampling of his preaching, marked by rich piety and doctrinal clarity, help make his labours for the Lord Christ far better known." - Michael Haykin, Professor, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

This book is divided into three parts. Part one is largely relational. It speaks of finding our center, purpose and contentment in our relationship with a holy and loving God; it helps us see the fulfillment of that relationship as grounded in eternity, and then points to the joy of helping others to share in our fulfillment.

Part two of the book is more theological (but not at all in a dry, academic sense). These sermons shine fresh light on the nature of the God whom we love and serve: his love displayed on the cross, his power over death, his holiness, and his faithfulness, even in his threats.

Finally part three is more practical. It encourages us to seek and embrace God's plan for our lives, and to appreciate the joy inherent in the Christian life, even in its more challenging aspects, so that others will want to embrace it as well.

CHRIST PRECIOUS TO THOSE THAT BELIEVE
A Practical Treatise on Faith and Love
John Fawcett

The subject to which the reader's attention is invited in these pages is of the highest importance; since love to the divine Redeemer is the distinguishing characteristic of a real Christian, and most indispensably requirement in order to our serving God acceptably in this world, and to our dwelling with him in the next world. Without a sincere and loving attachment to the Author of eternal salvation, whatever works of morality we may perform, our obedience will be materially and essentially defective, as not flowing from a proper principle.

Love is the parent and promoter of everything excellent and amiable in the Christian character. It diffuses itself through the whole train of holy actions. It gives them all their motion, and dignifies them with all their real value. The eloquence of men, or even of angels, the gift of prophecy, the knowledge of all mysteries, the power to work miracles, the most extensive liberality to the poor, and even the suffering of martyrdom, are all insignificant and unprofitable without love to Jesus.

He who loved us so as to give himself a ransom for our souls, who was lifted up upon the ignominious cross, that he might draw all men unto himself, proposes to those who profess to be his disciples, the solemn and important inquiry, "Do you love me?" He values not our service; if the heart is not in it. He knows what is in man; he sees and judges the heart, and has no regard to outward acts of obedience, if no devout affection is employed in them. It is not enough for the eye to be lifted up to him, or the knee to bow before him; it is not enough for the tongue to be employed in speaking of him, or the hand in acting for his interest in the world. All this may be done by those whose religion is mere pretense! But the heart with all the inward powers and passions of the soul, must, in the first place, be given to him. "Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity;" and as the natural consequence of that, keep his commandments.

I would ground the following observations on the words of the apostle Peter, "Yes, He is very precious to you who believe!" 1 Peter 2:7. The word precious, signifies honor, price, or preciousness itself; that which is of infinite value.

"I am personally thrilled that Christ Precious has been reprinted. Fawcett, author of the popular hymn "Blest be the tie that binds," is not well known but this book has been regarded as one of the minor classics of eighteenth-century piety. And rightly so. Here is the heart of the Christian faith presented: the Lord Christ in all of his glory and sweetness as the Savior of sinners. This is a must read." - Dr. Michael Haykin

LIVING IN THE HOPE OF GLORY
A New Translation of Monod's Farewell
Adolphe Monod

A nineteenth-century spiritual classic about living wholeheartedly for Christ, so as to have no regrets at life's end. Real, practical spiritual wisdom. Living in the Hope of Glory (originally titled Les Adieux, or Farewells) has been blessing readers for almost 150 years. It consists of a series of talks given by Adolphe Monod, a renowned pastor in the Reformed Church of France, as he suffered from terminal cancer. His family and friends met in his bedroom each Sunday during the last six months of his life to partake of the Lord's Supper and to hear his exhortations. But this is not a book about dying. It is a book about living consistently, powerfully and joyfully for the Lord, even in the midst of hard times. A week before his death Monod said, "I have a Savior! He has freely saved me through his shed blood. . . . All my righteous acts, all my works that have been praised, all my preaching . . . is in my eyes only filthy rags." A brief biography of Monod has been added to this edition to acquaint modern readers with this extraordinary man.

"A monument to the grace of God through fellowship with Jesus Christ. Monod's dying testimony is instructing, enriching, and inspiring. Here, the suffering Christian will find an uplifting companion." - Rick Phillips

"It is astonishing that Monod's Les Adieux are not better known. This courageous French Reformed pastor was both passionate in his care for people and singular in his devotion to God." - William Edgar

Adolphe Monod (1802-1856) was a well known preacher and leader in the French Reformed Church. He was a pastor of various French congregations, including the prominent Reformed Church of Paris, and a professor at FRC Seminary, Montauban. His published sermons and essays have been widely circulated for over 150 years.

Constance K. Walker, editor and translator, is a Senior Research Scientist at Duke University. She has published more than 50 articles in the field of physics, and has given a number of talks on science and faith.

FAMOUS REFORMERS OF THE REFORMED AND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHES
James I. Good

One of the promising tendencies in the sphere of present-day religious life, especially among the young people, is the growing interest in the study of the history of the Christian Church. "Bible and Mission Study Classes"; the combination of terms is itself highly significant; are being successfully organized and maintained by so many agencies directly and indirectly connected with the Church, that we may fairly cherish the hope that, not only among youthful converts, but also among older members in our households of faith, the zeal that is so marked and so admirable a feature of our religious activities may be increasingly tempered with that knowledge which is ever the prime requisite for the cultivation of the noblest types of character and the promotion of the best forms of service.

And if truth is never more potent than when it is seen incarnated in human life, surely the study of the great Reformers of the sixteenth century, the leaders in that wondrous anabasis that brought the Church out of her medieval tutelage into the spacious liberties of the modern era, will ever be an effective means for the deepening and enriching of our conception of what Christianity is and what it may become.

I therefore heartily welcome this "Mission Study Manual on the Reformation." The author's many publications in this particular field and his long experience as a professor of history in a theological seminary are a sufficient guarantee for the general excellence of his work. He has succeeded in sketching the careers and achievements of the Reformers with admirable simplicity, clearness and conciseness, and in maintaining a due proportion among the varied elements of the outline as a whole. The style is frequently brightened with picturesque and dramatic touches and with references to historic landmarks and memorials that reveal the sympathetic interest of the narrator as an eyewitness. After the approved fashion in works of this sort, each chapter is followed by a series of questions designed to bring out the salient features of the text for the purpose of a class review. As explained in the Preface, the book is adjusted to the specific purpose of stimulating popular interest in the study of the Reformation considered primarily, though not exclusively, as an evangelistic and missionary enterprise.

We congratulate the author on the completion of this Manual on the eve of the four hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, and express the hope that the book may be widely useful in spreading the knowledge of the Church of that period, and by this means furthering the kingdom of our Lord and Savior in our own day.

Frederick W. Loetscher. Princeton Theological Seminary, May 15, 1916.

FAMOUS MISSIONARIES OF THE REFORMED CHURCH
James I. Good

This book presents a fascinating survey of Reformed missions in 29 chapters. What impresses the reader especially is the worldwide sweep of Reformed mis¡sions, vividly described by the author.

Author's Preface:

In the great work of saving the world, the Reformed Church has had an honorable part and it ought to be inspiration to our German Reformed to learn what has already been done. The name Reformed is larger than any one nation or denomination. By famous missionaries of the Reformed Church we mean missionaries who under the Reformed name have gone forth and preached the gospel to the heathen. For the Reformed, whether Dutch, German, French, Swiss or American, are after all the same. The glory of one is the glory of all. Accordingly this subject is one of great interest to all our people. The Reformed missionaries have made the Reformed name known all over the world.

HERE I STAND
A Life of Martin Luther
Roland Bainton

"I cannot.. I will not... recant! Here I stand." This authoritative and inspiring story paints a vivid portrait of the crusader who spearheaded the Reformation. Considered one of the most readable biographies of Martin Luther, this volume is an illustrated look at the German religious reformer and his influence on Western civilization.

Martin Luther entered a monastery as a youth and as a man shattered the structure of the medieval church. Luther spoke out against the corrupt religious practices that then existed. His demand that the authority for doctrine and practice be Scriptures, rather than Popes or Councils, echoed around the world and ignited the Great Reformation. Accused of heresy and threatened with excommunication and death, Luther maintained his bold stand and refused to recant. In his crusade to eliminate religious abuses, he did more than any other man to establish the Protestant faith. With sound historical scholarship and penetrating insight, Roland Bainton examines Luther's widespread influence. He re-creates the spiritual setting of the sixteenth century, showing Luther's place within it and influence upon it. Richly illustrated with more than 100 woodcuts and engravings from Luther's own time, Here I Stand dramatically brings to life Martin Luther, the great reformer.

Bainton published Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther in 1950. As of 2008, it is still in print. Kenneth Scott Latourette, in the chapter notes for "Luther and the Rise and Spread of Lutheranism" in his History of Christianity, lauds Bainton's biography of Luther as "A superb combination of accurate scholarship based upon a thorough knowledge of the sources and secondary works with insight, vivid, readable literary style, and reproductions of contemporary illustrations. It also contains so valuable a bibliography as to render needless an extended one in this chapter." In his chapter on Luther's writings in Invitation to the Classics, Mark A. Noll singles out BaintonÆs biography:

"Of the many superlative treatments, a half-century old study by Roland Bainton, Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther, has justly won a reputation as a classic work on a classic subject."

THE INSTITUTES OF THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION" Special 500th Anniversary Edition
This limited edition of John Calvin's Reformation classic, Institutes of the Christian Religion, commemorates the 500th anniversary of Calvin's birth in 1509.

This beautiful new jacketed cloth volume features:

- An eight-page, four-color insert on coated stock, including a frontispiece featuring the title page of the original publication and a timeline of the Reformation and of John Calvin's life

- Two ribbon markers

- Gold foil and embossing

The word "Institutes"would be better translated as "Principles of the Christian Faith" or "Instruction in the Christian Faith." The book was intended as an elementary manual for general readers who wanted to know something about the evangelical faith. The first part of the title expressed this aim: "The Principles of the Christian Faith, containing almost the whole sum of godliness and whatever it is necessary to know about saving doctrine." Calvin later wrote that, when he undertook the work, "all I had in mind was to hand on some elementary teaching by which anyone who had been touched by an interest in religion might be formed to true godliness. I labored at the task especially for our own Frenchmen, for I saw that many were hungering and thirsting after Christ and yet that only a very few had any real knowledge of him."

CHRIST IS ALL IN ALL
What Christ is Made to Believers
Philip Henry

PHILIP HENRY (1631-1696) is best known in our day as the father of the great Puritan commentator Matthew Henry. This tremendous book will demonstrate for all to see one of the reasons Matthew Henry became such a useful man of God. He sat at the feet of his father and learned of him about the gloriies of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Although a very gifted preacher and a faithful pastor, we are informed: "Nowhere did Philip Henry shine more brightly than as a father and minister to his own household. Early morning prayer was practised, that the day's work might begin with God's service; early evening prayer, before the servants and children began to be sleepy, and always before supper, that all might be more fit to join with the whole body and mind."

This volume was not published until nearly 135 years after his death in 1830, when it formed an appendix to the Miscellaneous Works of Matthew Henry. Later it finally appeared on its own as it is in this volume.

Here you will find 380 pages of brilliant Christ-honoring material in which title after title, image after image, is employed to exalt the name of Christ Jesus and to build up the saints of God.

Christ is our foundation, our food, our root, our raiment, our head, our hope, our refuge, our righteousness, our light, our life, our peace, our passover, our portion, our propitiation and 25 more. He concludes with two glorious chapters entitled CHRIST IS OUR ALL.

CHOSEN BY GOD
R.C. Sproul

Here is a clear scriptural case for the classic (and sometimes controversial) Christian doctrine of predestination. Through this view of a truly sovereign God, readers will see how sinfulness prevents man from choosing God on his own; instead, God must change people's hearts.

Dr. R. C. Sproul is chairman and president of Ligonier Ministries, an organization that provides biblical and theological training for laypeople. He is the Minister of Preaching and Teaching at Saint Andrews Chapel in Sanford, Florida and has served as a professor at Reformed Theological Seminary, Knox Seminary, Westminster Seminary California, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. The author of many books on the Bible and Christian doctrine, including the award-winning The Holiness of God, he also hosts the international radio program "Renewing Your Mind," heard in over 120 countries.

PRACTICAL ATHEISM
The Plague of the Nation
Stephen Charnock

This sermon is taken from Charnock's classic EXISTENCE & ATTRIBUTES OF GOD.

"Atheism in the Westen world wears the clothing of evolutionary humanism. We are asked to believe that everything in this infinitely complex creation happened by chance. Stephen Charnock explains why atheism is foolishness. He does this very well. It is splendid to have his work in print." Erroll Hulse Associate pastor Leeds Reformed Baptist Church.

HEINRICH BULLINGER AND THE DOCTRINE OF PREDESTINATION
Cornelius Venema

Cornelis P. Venema evaluates the claims of some church historians that Heinrich Bullinger developed a substantially different understanding of predestination than John Calvin, which supposedly led to two competing Reformed traditions. Venema evaluates Bullinger's most important writings on predestination, showing that the distinctions present between Bullinger and Calvin on predestination do not lead to any substantial divergence of theological positions.

"Heinrich Bullinger and John Calvin were the two theologians most responsible for creating the sixteenth-century Reformed version of Christianity. Yet Bullinger's thought has never been subjected to the intensive study lavished on Calvin's thought. Cornelis Venema takes an important step in filling this gap with this admirably precise and nuanced study of Bullinger's doctrine of predestination." - Robert M. Kingdon, University of Wisconsin

"Despite the fact that Heinrich Bullinger was one of the most significant and influential figures in the development of Reformed theology in the sixteenth century, he has not always been interpreted contextually. Cornelis Venema has provided us with a carefully researched and thoughtfully argued reassessment of Bullinger's doctrine of predestination and soteriology. Venema's work presents a significant challenge to those who find in Bullinger the source of a competing Reformed tradition distinct from Calvin and Reformed orthodoxy." - R. Scott Clark, Westminster Theological Seminary in California

"This is the most careful and complete study of Bullinger's doctrine of predestination in English. In the ongoing debate regarding whether Bullinger was the author of another Reformed tradition or another author of the Reformed tradition, Venema makes a compelling case for the latter. His finely nuanced arguments and ample support from the sources will make it difficult to contend any longer that Bullinger's views of predestination and covenant diverged substantially from John Calvin's." - Lyle D. Bierma, Calvin Theological Seminary

"Heinrich Bullinger was a great and influential Reformer in the sixteenth century. His important work has been sadly neglected or misrepresented in our time. Cornelis Venema's study provides a lucid, balanced, and reliable account of Bullinger's teaching on predestination. He clears away many misunderstandings and misrepresentations to allow Bullinger's voice to be heard clearly. This is a very valuable book". Dr. W. Robert Godfrey, Westminster Theological Seminary in California

Cornelis P. Venema (Ph.D., Princeton Theological Seminary) is professor of doctrinal studies and dean of the faculty at Mid-America Reformed Seminary. He has coauthored several books, including, But for the Grace of God, The Promise of the Future, and What We Believe.

THE REFORMED DOCTRINE OF THE ATONEMENT
Loraine Boettner

"The two great objectives to be accomplished by Jesus Christ in His mission to this world were, first, the removal of the curse under which mankind labored as a result of the disobedience and fall, and second, the restoration of men to the image and fellowship of God. Both of these were essential to salvation. The work of Christ in reconciling God and men we call the Atonement; and the doctrine, we believe, lies at the very heart of the Christian system.

In the nature of the case we are altogether dependent on Scripture for our knowledge concerning this doctrine and can know only what God has seen fit to reveal concerning it. Human philosophy and speculation can contribute practically nothing toward its solution, and should be held in abeyance. Our present purpose is to give a systematized account of what the Scriptures teach concerning it, and to show that this fits in perfectly with the longings and aspirations of an enlightened spiritual nature." - Loraine Boettner

LORAINE BOETTNER (1901-1990) was born on a farm in Linden, Missouri. He was a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary (Th.B., 1928; Th.M., 1929), where he studied Systematic Theology under Dr. C. W. Hodge. Previously he had graduated from Tarkio College, Missouri, and had taken a short course in Agriculture at the University of Missouri.

He taught Bible for eight years in Pikeville College, Kentucky. While there he married in 1932. In 1933 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity, and in 1957 the degree of Doctor of Literature. He was a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church of USA. In 1937 he began working at the Library of Congress and the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

Some of his books include: The Reformed Doctrine of Predestination, Roman Catholicism, Studies In Theology, Immortality, The Millennium and A Harmony of the Gospels.

This volume was first published in 1941 under the simple title THE ATONEMENT.

The titles of each chapter are as follows:

1 - The Atonement

2 - The Significance of Christ's Death

3 - The Satisfaction View of the Atonement

4 - The Active and Passive Obedience of Christ

5 - Christ as Our Ransomer

6 - The Representative Principle

7 - The Extent of the Atonement

8 - Old Testament Ritual and Symbolism

9 - Erroneous Theories of the Atonement

Post-Reformation Reformed Dogmatics (4 Volumes)
The Rise and Development of Reformed Orthodoxy, ca. 1520 to ca. 1725
Richard A. Muller

Contending that the theology of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is often misrepresented in church histories and scholarly treatments, Richard Muller has undertaken this exhaustive study of specific doctrines to demonstrate how doctrine developed in the early Protestant period.

This important historical and theological treatment is now available as both individual volumes and as a complete set. The revised versions of volumes one and two include updated bibliographic references, rearranged chapters and sections, and attractive formatting to match volumes three and four, which are available for the first time. The Works of John Owen
John Owen

John Owen was born in 1616 and died in 1683. During his sixty-seven years he lived out a life full of spiritual experience, literary accomplishment, and national influence so beyond most of his peers that he continues to merit the accolade of "The greatest British theologian of all time."

Despite his other acheivements, Owen is best famed for his writings. These cover the range of doctrinal, ecclesiastical and practical subjects. They are characterized by profundity, thoroughness and, consequently, authority. Andrew Thomson, his biographer, has noted that Owen makes you feel when he has reached the end of his subject, that he has also exhausted it.

Although many of his works were called forth by the particular needs of his own day thay all have a uniform quality of timelessness.

Owen is surely the Prince of the Puritans. 'To master his works', says Spurgeon, 'is to be a profound theologian.' But his more practical writings (especially volumes 6-9) are of immense benefit to all Christians.

Whether treating the intricacies of justification by faith or the mortification of sin, Owen consistently demonstrates theological precision and pastoral sensitivity

THE WORKS OF THOMAS BROOKS
Thomas Brooks

The definitive edition of the Works of Brooks, here reissued, was first published by James Nichol in 1866. It was edited by A. B. Grosart. At that time, C. H. Spurgeon commented in The Sword and the Trowel,

"The volumes now before us are by that marvelously rich author Thomas Brooks, whose wealth of imagery surpasses all others of his age. The mere marginal notes of Brooks are more valuable than pages of ordinary writers; we take pleasure in the stones of his temple, and the very dust thereof we favor. Of all the Puritans he is the most readable, if we except John Bunyan; and if he cannot display the depth of Owen or the raciness of Adams, he leaves them far behind in excessive [unusual] sweetness and sparkling beauty of metaphor. There is a clear, silvery, refreshing sound in the name 'Brooks', and as is the name, such is the man. Every reader who can afford the money should purchase this incorrupt, unmutilated, unchanged, well-printed and perfectly edited copy of Brooks."

PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE BOOK OF JOB (12 VOLS.)
Joseph Caryl

Caryl's work is a monolithic achievement, even by Puritan standards. His exegesis is lengthy, meaty, and timeless. There are many thoughts and applications in Caryl's work that cannot be found elsewhere.

In the nineteenth-century, an abridgement of Caryl's work appeared, but how one can skillfully reduce twelve octavo volumes into a single work of nearly 200 pages is something of a mystery. Spurgeon said it best: "We do not believe in an abridgment of a book which is good throughout. Think of twelve large volumes condensed into one small one! An ox in a gallipot [a small jar used to hold medicines] is nothing to it" (Commenting on Commentaries, p. 76).

The text is a facsimile of the seventeenth-century edition, with a new introduction by Dr. Joel Beeke and Randall Peterson. It also includes an updated index with over 6000 textual references. It has smyth-sewn binding and decorative woven cloth covered boards.

AN EXPOSITION OF THE PROPHECY OF HOSEA
Jeremiah Burroughs

"Jeremiah Burroughs's Exposition of the Prophecy of Hosea is a fine and mammoth treatment of an important prophet. Spurgeon called this work 'masterly,' noting that it is 'a vast treasure-house of experimental exposition.' No work on Hosea has since superseded this commentary. Reading Burroughs is always a treat for the spiritually-minded. His writings are expositionally sound and reliable, sane and usable, warm and devotional. We pray that God will use this reprint as a valuable tool, especially for ministers and Bible teachers as they prepare messages on this graphic prophet." - Joel R. Beeke, from the biographical preface

"Jeremiah Burroughs (c.1600-1646), one of the dissenting members of the Westminster Assembly and author of over 20 volumes, including The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment and Gospel Worship, wrote a 4-volume commentary on Hosea (1643-51), which has long been regarded as a classic of both profound learning and pastoral advice. No student of Hosea can claim to have mastered the prophet without consulting Burroughs. An essential commentary." - Derek W. H. Thomas, Reformed Theological Seminary

"Jeremiah Burroughs's Hosea combines exegetical rigor, theological astuteness, and experimental refreshment. In the great tradition of Puritan biblical exposition, Burroughs opens the inspired text, and has the text address the human heart. He mines the text for its meaning and doctrine, and translates his insights into wonderful applications. With great skill and ease, Burroughs sounds out Hosea's message - its threats of judgment, its calls to repentance, its promises of mercy, and its prophecies of Christ. Still today, Burroughs makes them resonate clearly and compellingly." - Gerald M. Bilkes, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

"Mr. Patton seems to have been the Dr. Andrew Bonar of the Irish Presbyterian Church. Preachers who affect modern thought in their sermons might do worse than turn their attention to these earnest and intensely evangelical addresses." - U.P. Magazine

RICHES OF DIVINE GRACE

This volume comes with a New Biographical Introduction by Geoff Thomas.

Sermons include the following:

THE HOMEWARD WAY ( John 14:6)

THE SURE PROMISES OF GOD (2 Corinthians 1:20)

HEIRS OF THE COVENANT (Galatians 3:29)

DISPUTATIONS ON HOLY SCRIPTURE
William Whitaker

One of the principal confessions of the Protestant Reformation was sola Scriptura, Scripture alone is the final, infallible authority for the church. For centuries, however, Roman Catholicism has denied this principle, positing church tradition as an equal, if not higher authority.

In this book, Puritan William Whitaker forcefully and effectively deals with objections to the doctrine of sola Scriptura. He addresses issues such as the number of books in the canon, authentic versions of the Bible, as well as Scripture's authority, clarity, interpretation, and perfection. Many have said that Whitaker so greatly defended the Protestant position that 'he cut off the head of his antagonist with his own weapons.'

One reader wrote:

Whitaker wrote an engaging and edifying book. The purpose of Whitaker's book is to defend the doctrine of 'sola scriptura' against the Papists, especially Bellarmine and Stapleton. The defense is broken down into six questions, all which are still relevant today:

1. The number of the canonical books.

2. The authentic edition and versions.

3. The authority of Scripture.

4. The perspicuity of scripture.

5. The interpretation of Scripture.

6. The perfection of Scripture over against human traditions.

OF DOMESTICAL DUTIES
The Classic Puritan Treatise on the Christian Family
William Gouge

"We are grateful for this new reprint of Gouge's classic on family living titled, Of Domesticall Duties (1622), last printed by Walter Johnson in facsimile in 1976. This penetrating analysis of the godly household for which Gouge became best known in his own day, is divided into eight sections dealing with the duties of family life. In the first part, Gouge explains the foundation of family duties, based on Ephesians 5:21- 6:9. The second part deals with the husband-wife relationship. The third focuses on the duties of wives, and the fourth with the duties of husbands. The fifth examines the duties of children, and the sixth, the duties of parents. The final parts examine the relationships and duties of servants and their masters.

While some of Gouge's material is outdated, his emphasis and advice are timeless on the whole. Usher claims that Gouge is finally being 'recognized as one of the subtlest of early modern writers to articulate the concept of companionable marriage' (his own was regarded as exemplary) and of considerate, rather than merely prescriptive, parenthood. His psychological insights into the nature of childhood and adolescence can be breathtaking in their modernity. He even touches on the question of child-abuse, a subject effectively taboo until the 1970s (Oxford DNB, 23:38).

Gouge is a skilled expositor who draws practical applications from the Epistles in instructing families how to walk in a manner worthy of their Lord. As a father of seven sons and six daughters, Gouge knew whereof he spoke. - Joel Beeke, taken from the Introduction

THE SERMONS OF ROBERT MURRAY M'CHEYNE
Robert Murray M'Cheyne

At the beginning of the twentieth century, James Macdonald of Edinburgh purchased a box of old papers which had belonged to a preacher of around sixty years earlier. The contents might have seemed of little value, but to some they were 'altogether priceless'. They were the notebooks and sermon notes of Robert Murray M'Cheyne (1813-43), the godly and devoted minister of St Peter's Church, Dundee. From these papers, lodged in the library of New College, Edinburgh, Dr Michael D. McMullen has transcribed the sermons found in this set of three volumes. They are indeed a precious treasure. Whether based on Old Testament or New, every sermon is full of Christ: the sinner's need of Him, the fullness of His grace, the happiness of those who come to Him, and the danger of stopping short of genuine faith in Him. They will remind preachers and ordinary Christians alike that to preach Christ aright, one must first know Him, and live in the atmosphere of His love.

Banner of Truth has reprinted this marvelous three volume set in their usual manner in beautiful hardcover volumes.

EXISTENCE & ATTRIBUTES OF GOD
Stephen Charnock

Stephen Charnock was a Puritan theologian, whose hours of daily Bible study contributed to a vast and intimate knowledge of the Scriptures. Though this book was written in the seventeenth century, Charnock's keen grasp of biblical theology ensures its relevance in all eras, particularly today. His exhaustive discussions on the existence and attributes of God form one of the best general theology books available.

His reflections on the Bible clarify for all readers the full implications of understanding God as he was revealed in both the Old and New Testaments. Ever the pragmatist, Charnock focuses his reflections on sustainable, practical application, offering Christians at all times the knowledge that leads to greater obedience and more invigorating worship.

The discourses in this book cover such important theological themes as: the existence of God; the failure of practical atheism; the spiritual nature of God; spiritual worship; God's eternality; God's immutability; God's omnipresence; God's knowledge (omniscience); God's wisdom; God's power; God's holiness; God's goodness; God's dominion; God's patience. Each discourse combines with all others to produce a truly broad, multifaceted look at God and God's qualities, giving all readers an inspirational, devotional, and scholarly look at Christian theology.

Let this seventeenth century classic bring your twenty-first century faith to a whole new level. As you learn more about God, you will begin to reflect more of His character and nature to the world.
