Biographical Sketch

John Angell James (1785-1859) was born on June 6, 1785, and became a student in 1802 at Gospert Academy, Hampshire, under David Bogue. He spent most of his years of ministry at Carr's Lane Chapel in Birmingham.

He was a decided Calvinist in doctrine and beautifully balanced his convictions with practical piety in his life and his ministry. He preached and wrote to the common man and woman of every age group and station in life. He was the author of 17 titles, of which the most popular were The Anxious Inquirer and The Church Member's Guide.

He was an humble and unpretentious man, as is evident from his unwillingness to use the title Doctor of Divinity despite the fact that he was honored with this degree by both Glasgow University and Princeton Seminary.

John Angell James died on October 1, 1859 and was buried with great honor in a vault in front of the pulpit at Carr's Lane Chapel. Being dead, he yet speaks.
