TO SEEK AND TO SAVE: Daily Reflections on the Road to the Cross
SINCLAIR FERGUSON

Journey with Jesus on the road to Jerusalem with these reflections for Lent by Sinclair Ferguson. As you walk through the second half of Luke’s Gospel, you'll meet the people Jesus encountered on the way to the cross—and prepare your heart to appreciate his death and resurrection afresh.

Each day you'll be invited to:

• Read a passage of Luke's Gospel and a short meditation by Sinclair Ferguson

• Reflect on a thought-provoking question

• Respond in prayer and praise as you journal

Pithy yet profound, these devotions will hold up a mirror to your own heart and, more importantly, give you a window into the heart of the Lord Jesus—the one who came to seek and to save the lost at Easter.

This is the perfect follow-up to Sinclair Ferguson's highly popular Advent devotional, Love Came Down at Christmas.

INTRODUCTION by Ferguson

"We read a lot of poetry at school, but among my favourites were the vivid narratives in Geoffrey Chaucer’s 'The Canterbury Tales.'

There was something fascinating about the characters en route to Canterbury that Chaucer portrayed—pilgrims on their way to visit the shrine of Archbishop Thomas Becket. These included such memorable individuals as the much-married Wife of Bath and the “verray, parfit gentil” Knight. But—no doubt somewhat prejudiced by a sense that I was being called to be a minister—my favourite pilgrim was the poor Parson, who preached the message of Christ but first followed it himself.

But Chaucer was by no means the first author to use a journey as the motif for introducing his readers to a variety of interesting people. He had long been preceded by Luke, the beloved physician and author of the New Testament’s third Gospel. From chapter 9 verse 51 onwards, Luke records all the events in Jesus’ life in the form of a journey to Jerusalem. This travelogue eventually brings us to Calvary and to the empty tomb.

The narrative begins against the background of a major turning point in the ministry of Jesus. Simon Peter has just confessed that Jesus is the Messiah (9:18-20). In response Jesus explains that he is going to suffer and be rejected and yet rise again (9:21-22). A week later he is gloriously transfigured in the presence of three of his disciples: Peter, James and John (9:28-36). Again, he tells them about his impending suffering (9:43-45). From virtually that point on, until he enters Jerusalem with the shouts of the people ringing in his ears, everything we learn about Jesus takes place on a journey whose destination is Calvary.

In his travelogue, Luke describes Jesus’ encounters with a wide variety of individuals and groups of people. Each of them is described within the scope of only a few verses; but all of them come alive to us through Luke’s pen.

In this series of reflections for Lent, we will listen in on most of these conversations.

Each encounter will build up a picture of the journey’s real purpose; for, as he tells one man he meets along the way, Jesus is “the Son of Man [who] came to seek and to save the lost” (19:10). We will see Jesus “seeking” out people as he reveals their hearts, perceives their needs and tests their motives. We will see him throwing wide the offer of salvation to those he meets—Jew and Gentile, rich and poor, men and women, all similarly lost. And finally, at the journey’s end, we will see him secure that salvation once and for all, at the cost of his life.

But Jesus also issues a challenge to anyone who would follow him along the road to Jerusalem. At the great turning point he says: 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?' (9:23-25)

The key issues for all of those who encounter Jesus in Luke’s Gospel are these: Do they know why he is on the road in the first place? And, will they follow him as his disciple?

This Lent, Jesus asks those same questions of us."

ENDORSEMENTS

“So many things clamor for our attention during this season when we really do want to put our focus on Christ. Sinclair Ferguson helps us to turn our gaze toward Jesus day by day so that we can take in the wonder of his grace toward sinners.” - NANCY GUTHRIE, Bible teacher and Author

“If, like me, you have been guilty of largely ignoring the 40 days of Lent, prepare to be redirected, challenged and stirred by Sinclair Ferguson’s focus, not on the process but on the person and work of the Lord Jesus.” - ALISTAIR BEGG, Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Cleveland; Bible teacher, Truth for Life

“I’ve peppered Sinclair with questions over a lunch table. I’ve read his books. I listen to his sermons. All because he is a precious guide to understanding our Savior’s life and work. And that’s the glorious effect of reading this devotional. Read it during Lent. Read it before Lent. Read it after Lent. It doesn’t matter. Just be sure to read it.” - TONY REINKE, Author

“Sinclair Ferguson’s Lent book is both wonderfully accessible and theologically rich. The daily comments are not too long to intimidate nor too short to be unsatisfying. Both younger and older believers will find much to encourage, challenge and stimulate them in their faith in our Lord Jesus. Some of the insights moved me to tears in deepening my own appreciation of Christ. What a precious resource for God’s people.” - ANGUS MACLEAY, Rector, St Nicholas Church, Sevenoaks, UK

“We enter holy ground when we follow our Lord’s road to the cross. There could be no more reliable guide than Sinclair Ferguson. These readings provide warm encouragement and also a challenge to ongoing, daily repentance—helpful for any time of the year.” - DR SHARON JAMES, Social Policy Analyst, The Christian Institute

“These superb reflections on the journey of Jesus to the cross, as recorded by Luke, are the ideal preparation for Easter. Warm, clear and illuminating, they show us ourselves as we see how Jesus dealt with people on the way. But most of all they show us Jesus, the wonder of his love and his call to follow him as his disciples. Read, enjoy and benefit.” - RT REV. WALLACE BENN, Former Bishop of Lewes

“These Lent devotions describe familiar encounters with Jesus in a fresh and challenging way. The reader is encouraged throughout to ask themselves, ‘How will I respond to Jesus’ words?’ Each day’s read is short enough to be manageable but deep enough to get to the heart of who Jesus is and what it means to follow him.” - CELIA REYNOLDS, Women’s Ministry Co-ordinator, Christchurch Market Harborough

"My general rule is this; if Ferguson writes it, you should read it! The Gospel of Luke is full of Jesus’ encounters with a wide range of people; from the rich to the poor and from religious leaders to beggars. In this devotional Ferguson walks you through many of those encounters to help you grasp a fuller picture of the significance of his journey to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10). At the end of each short devotional, lasting no more than 3 pages, you’ll find a wee note to reflect on and a short section for you to take notes. I highly recommend that you read this, even if you don’t use it for lent this year. It is a wonderful book full of helpful insights and descriptions of Jesus and his journey to the cross." -Alistair Chalmers

PRECIOUS SEED: Discourses by Scottish Worthies
James Buchanan, John Brown, Thomas Chalmers, Wm Cunningham, John "Rabbii" Duncan, Patrick Fairbairn, John Love, Robert Murray M'Cheyne

"An outstanding collection of sermons by many of Scotland's leading evangelical preachers and leaders of former times. It will surely be treasured." - Iain H. Murray

"Precious Seed contains sermons by the 'hall of fame' of Scottish preachers on the most glorious themes of the gospel. Here is preaching at its apex - the best preachers presenting their best sermons on the best subjects!" - Joel R. Beeke

"The very titles of the sermons in this book awaken our 21st century evangelical mindset to an older, deeper, better world of preaching. The list of preachers itself reads like an awe-inspiring roll call of God-given preachers in whose ministires man was small and sinful, God infinitely great, and his gospel inexpressibly glorious. Yes, these sermons belong to a past age. But they were preached by men who understood their own times and what true preaching can be. Here is a volume to nourish the heart of serious Christians and to make the church long to be taught again from the mouth of God." - Sinclair B Ferguson

"And in those days there were giants in the land. Thomas M'Crie, David Welsh, Thomas Chalmers, John Macdonald of Ferintosh, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, Robert Gordon, William Cunningham, Thomas Guthrie, R.S. Candlish, Patrick Fairbairn, John 'Rabbi' Duncan and John Macdonald of Calcutta. Are you kidding me? This is the pantheon of 19th century Scottish evangelicalism. Take it and read. Nothing more needs be said to commend the book than to mention the names of those whose sermons are included." - Ligon Duncan

This is a very rare volume of sermons by two dozen Scots Worthies from the late 18th and 19th centuries. Every sermon hits the mark and addresses themes that have moved the church throughout the ages.

THE CHRISTIAN'S PRESENT FOR ALL SEASONS: Containing Devotional Thoughts of Eminent Divines
Joseph Hall, Isaac Watts, John Owen, Richard Sibbes, John Flavel, Jonathan Edwards, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, William Jay and More

An Introductory Essay on "Devotion" by William B. Sprague sets the stage for a rich devotional journey from Joseph Hall to William Jay. This volume was published in 1866 by The American Tract Society and it contains dozens and dozens of brief devotional exercises to stimulate the brethren to love and good works. The contributors to this volume are a veritable who's who in evangelical circles from the Puritan era to the mid-nineteenth century. The Names are as follows:

JOSEPH HALL - RICHARD SIBBES - JEREMY TAYLOR

ROBERT LEIGHTON - RICHARD BAXTER - JOHN OWEN

WILLIAM BATES - JOHN FLAVEL - STEPHEN CHARNOCK

JOHN BUNYAN - JOHN TILLOTSON - ISAAC BARROW

JOHN HOWE - EZEKIEL HOPKINS - THOMAS KEN

THOMAS COMBER - BENJAMIN JENKS - MATTHEW HENRY

THOMAS WILSON - ISAAC WATTS - THOMAS ADAM

PHILIP DODDRIDGE - JONATHAN EDWARDS - JOHN WESLEY

WILLIAM ROMAINE - ROBERT WALKER - SAMUEL DAVIES

JOHN NEWTON - THOMAS SCOTT - JOHN LOGAN

TIMOTHY DWIGHT - ANDREW FULLER - ROBERT HALL

JOHN MASON - THOMAS CHALMERS - REGINALD HEBER

EDWARD BICKERSTETH - WILLIAM NEVINS - WILLIAM JAY

W.B. Sprague concluded his Introductory Essay with these words: "Among the many excellent works adapted especially to help the Christian in his devotions, this book holds a prominent place. The Compiler seems to have ranged through almost the whole field of devotional literature, and to have gathered up all the brightest gems that came in his way; and so successful has he been that one may open the book at random, as often as he will, and will never find his eye resting upon anything that he can afford to pass over, or that does not supply the elements of rich devotional thought. It is difficult to say which is most to be admired, the Compiler's good judgment and taste, or his extraordinary patience in research, that has brought to us the heavenly thoughts of so many saints and sages. This is truly a beautiful compilation of DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS."

D.A. Harsha, the Editor, said the following in his Preface: "It is more than ten years since the preparation of the present volume was commenced. During all this time, the selection of these beautiful passages has been slowly but steadily carried on. The work was undertaken in connection with the editing of a Library of Christian Authors, embracing Memoirs of Eminent Divines, and their choice works--a series whose preparation is not yet completed. In performing this long and arduous labor, and while carefully perusing the works of our best authors, from the 17th century to the present time, passages in each author, which the editor regarded as among the finest specimens of devotional and practical writing, were selected for the present volume. In this manner have these 'calm and holy thoughts' of those who have shone as stars in the firmament of the Christian Church, been brought together; and it is believed that in the following pages will be found some of the choicest gems of English sacred literature--gems which 'within small compass, and in purest gold, will preserve their lustre for ages.'"

"We sometimes sing the opening lines of Psalm 63 with these words:

'GOD is my great desire, His face I seek the first

To him my heart and soul aspire, For him I thirst.'

This book of devotions by such eminent saints makes it irresistible because the fervent desires of our hearts for GOD Triune must be fed." - Erroll Hulse

"This is sweet food from savory writers. Perfect for the breakfast table, the bedside, the bathroom, red lights, or anywhere else where a minute or two can be redeemed for your soul's nourishment." - Dr. Robert Martin, Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle and Editor of Reformed Baptist Theological Review

"A quick scan of the table of contents makes clear that this book could be referred to as the hall of fame of devotional literature. Theological depth and practical application define the writings of men like John Flavel, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Matthew Henry and the rest of the authors of this book. This book would make a wonderful gift for any occasion of the year. The recipient of such a gift would have a library in one volume of some of the greatest minds in Christian history. This book would be useful in leading family worship because it would expose your family to classic reformed theology in a devotional format. Buy this book in bulk, keep a copy for yourself and pass down the truth by giving your remaining copies away." - Ray Rhodes, Jr. is President of Nourished in the Word Ministries and author of two Solid Ground Books, "Family Worship for the Reformation Season" and "Family Worship for the Christmas Season."

"In a day of time-sensitivity when every minute and hour seems to be at a premium, the leisure our forebears had for reading seems a pipe-dream for most of God's people. What is the solution? We need better stewardship of our time, for starters. But also we need books like this one that distill the riches of eminent divines from the past and give them to us in succinct packages that will stay with us through the day and week.I am glad to see this marvellous collection reprinted by Solid Ground Christian Books." - Dr. Michael Haykin

One book notice said, "A collection of the holiest aspirations of the holiest men."

THE CHRISTIAN'S DAILY WALK: In Holy Security and Peace
Henry Scudder, with Recommendations by John Owen & Richard Baxter

"The Christian disciple who is aspiring after that obedience, which, while it fulfills the demands of the law in the letter, is also rendered in newness of spirit, will find in the following Treatise, Scudder's 'Christian's Daily Walk In Holy Security And Peace,' a valuable companion and counselor to guide him in every condition of life, and under all the vicissitudes to which life is subject." - Thomas Chalmers

"I shall therefore say no more, but that if those into whose hands this book shall come, be not either openly or secretly enemies to the whole design of it, as being 'alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them,' or be not possessed with prejudices against the simplicity of the gospel, and that strictness of obedience it requireth, they will find that guidance, direction, and spiritual advantage, by which their faith, love, and obedience, may be increased and improved; which will issue in the praise of God's grace, that ought to be the end of all our writing and reading in this world." - John Owen

"Reader, If thou wilt make this book, after the sacred scripture, thy daily counselor, and monitor, and comforter, I am assured the experience of thy own great advantage, and increase of wisdom, holiness, and peace, will commend it to thee more effectually than my words can do. Read, love, and practice that which is here taught thee, and doubt not of thy everlasting happiness." - Richard Baxter

AN EXPOSITION OF HEBREWS (in 7 Volumes)
JOHN OWEN

John Owen here analyses the text of Hebrews with care and provides a judicious interpretation which shows an impressive familiarity with a wide range of biblical scholarship. He also provides rich practical applications.

John Owen (1616-1683) was probably the greatest systematic theologian of the British Puritans, yet such was his depth of Christian wisdom and discernment that he also excelled in pastoral and spiritual theology. Common to his stature in both of these areas was his understanding of Scripture. While this is evident throughout his writings, it is in his massive exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews that the range of his knowledge and the depth of his exegetical powers are most evident. Here he analyses the text with care and provides a judicious interpretation which shows an impressive familiarity with a wide range of biblical scholarship. In addition, following the classical Puritan method of commentary with its constant concern for Christian living, he provides rich practical applications. Thus in a balanced way, he addresses both mind and heart. Written with the reverent spirit of a scholar-pastor whose stated aim in his ministry was ‘to promote holiness’, Owen's study of Hebrews is one of the great classical commentaries of the Christian Church.

THE DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION: An Outline of Its History in the Church and of Its Exposition from Scripture
James Buchanan with a new introduction by Dr. Gerald Bilkes

"One of the greatest works on the doctrine of justification came from the pen of the Scottish divine James Buchanan. It first appeared in 1867 and has withstood the test of time since then as a classic volume on the subject." - James R. White, the author of 'The God Who Justifies'

"James Buchanan's 'Doctrine of Justification' is THE classic work on this cardinal doctrine by which a church stands or falls. After lucidly covering the historical development of the doctrine through the Old Testament, the apostolic age, the scholastic divines, the Reformation and Counter Reformation, and in the Church of England, Buchanan expounds the doctrine itself by covering the scriptural meaning of the term, its relation to the law and justice of God, its relation to the mediatorial work of Christ, its relation to grace and works, and more. The chapter on justification in relation to the work of the Holy Spirit is alone worth the price of the book. Throughout, Buchanan systematizes the doctrine of justification in an orthodox Reformed manner that is fully reliable, is consistent with all the doctrines of grace, and is still relevant to the burning issues of our day, such as the New Perspective. A new introduction by Dr. Gerald Bilkes on the New Perspective is also a great help. If you can only afford to read one book on justification, read this definitive work." - -Joel R. Beeke

'The doctrine of justification by faith is like Atlas: it bears a world on its shoulders, the entire evangelical knowledge of saving grace ... This is still the best text book on the subject, from the standpoint of the classic covenant theology.' J. I. Packer

"Justification is, perhaps surprisingly, perhaps not, a point of contention within the evangelical, Protestant world in our own day, but so many evangelical ministers and students lack a knowledge of the historical and theological content and categories necessary to engage the discussion helpfully. Buchanan to the rescue. This magisterial nineteenth century treatment remains a standard. Indeed, you'll be surprised at the present applicability of Buchanan's assessments. Yes, in the century since Buchanan wrote, we've learned a lot of helpful, biblical things about the shape and stuff of justification. But Buchanan cannot be bypassed. Read and learn at the feet of a master." - Dr. Ligon Duncan

"You are re-publishing a gem! Buchanan's exposition of justification is, in my opinion, still the best one that has been done." - William Shishko

"The Reformation has been declared over by some. Justification by faith alone is under attack. Confusion abounds on this doctrine upon which the Christian faith hinges. Therefore, it is indeed most timely that this classic treatment receive fresh attention. There is no mere theologizing from the Scotsman, but honest exegetical work with incisive exposition. Pastors, students, and may I add, seminary professors will benefit greatly by returning to this marvelous treatment of this gospel doctrine." - Dr. Nick Willborn

"At the present stage of the justification debate, Buchanan would be a very wholesome remedy against unfair representations. He is absolutely masterful on the subject." - Dr. Roger Nicole

JAMES BUCHANAN (1804-1870) was born in Scotland in 1804 and ordained in 1827 in the Church of Scotland. In 1828 he commenced a very successful ministry at North Leith where he gained a great reputation as an earnest, eloquent, evangelical preacher. In 1845 he was appointed to the Chair of Apologetics at New College, Edinburgh, and in 1847 he succeeded Thomas Chalmers as Professor of Systematic Theology. He retired in 1868 and died two years later. Buchanan was a prolific and popular writer: his first book, Comfort in Affliction (1837), sold nearly 30,000 copies. His two most valuable works were The Office and Work of the Holy Spirit (1842), an exposition which still merits study, and The Doctrine of Justification, the Cunningham Lectures for 1866, reprinted here.

THE SCOTTISH PULPIT: From the Reformation to the Present (YALE UNIVERSITY LECTURES OF 1886)
William M. Taylor (1829-1895)

William Taylor was one of the very few men asked to deliver a second set of lectures at the Yale Lectures on Preaching. These were delivered in 1886 and were published, upon great demand, early the next year.

In his own words: "My aim has simply been to put the preachers in the environment of their times, to bring out the characteristics by which they were distinguished, and to give point to such lessons from their work as may be useful in our own age."

Taylor begins with John Knox, Andrew Melville, Alexander Henderson, Samuel Rutherford, Robert Leighton and many more. Very rare!

"THE SCOTTISH PULPIT! How hearts beat high and eyes sparkle on the part of the preaching fraternity at the thought, for preaching in the land of heather is justly renowned. Memories of John Knox, Thomas Chalmers, Guthrie, Candlish, Norman McLeod--they are all in the verbal portraits which Taylor does with consummate art. What drama, poetry, and fierce controversy, too, are in the annals of Scottish Church-life. It is a tough assignment, and William Taylor is equal to it." -Edgar DeWitt Jones, in 'The Royalty of the Pulpit'

SABBATH SCRIPTURE READINGS FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
Thomas Chalmers

Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847) was considered by many the greatest Scots preacher of his day. This volume contains over 430 pages of personal musings upon every chapter in the New Testament.

From October 1841 - September 1846 Chalmers compiled these "Sabbath Readings" as he systematically worked through every chapter in the New Testament. Like Augustine's "Confessions", these meditations are primarily written in the form and language of prayer. Here is Chalmers at his very best!

"They are precious fragments of immortal thought." - Charles H. Spurgeon

"Thomas Chalmers was the colossus of 19th century Scottish Christianity. His high eminence as a public figure did not preclude his deep humility of heart. In this volume we see the great man tender and childlike before God, willing to be taught and honest about his many struggles within, both with sin and comprehension of the Word. Chalmers becomes a welcome and friendly companion as we share in his meditations. " - Pastor Roger Salter

"Valuable insights from Thomas Chalmers drawn from his Sabbath meditations on Scripture. These are delightful and especially helpful." - Dr. Derek Thomas

"Thomas Chalmers' conversion was one of the great turning points in the history of the Church of Scotland. His personal investment in the pastoral and theological education of the core group of men who became the leading lights of the evangelical awakening in Scotland in the nineteenth century is one of the great stories of God's display of his sovereignty in the building up of the church. My own copy of Chalmers Life and Works comes right out of the library of the now-defunct United Free College Library of Glasgow: given to me as a gift by my mother many years ago. One of the choicest parts of that 13-volume treasure is Chalmers' Sabbath Readings, and so I am especially glad to commend these 'soul-fatting' messages to a new generation of readers." - Dr. J. Ligon Duncan

Thomas Carlyle said of Chalmers: "It is not often that the world has seen men like Thomas Chalmers, nor can the world afford to forget them; or in its most careless mood, be willing to. Probably the time is coming when it will be more apparent than it is now to everyone, that here, intrinsically, was the chief Scottish man of his time - a man possessed of such massive geniality of intellect as belonged to no other man. What a grand simplicity, broad humour, blent so kindly with enthusiasm, ardour and blazing thought - a man of such noble valour, strength and piety - above all things, of such perfect veracity, I have not met with in these times. Honour to him, honour belongs to him, and to the essential work he did - an everlasting continuance among the possessions of this world"

SABBATH SCRIPTURE READINGS FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT: Spiritual Meditations from Genesis 1 - 2 Kings 11
Thomas Chalmers

Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847) was considered by many the greatest Scots preacher of his day. This volume contains over 500 pages of personal musings upon every chapter from Genesis - 2 Kings 11. Sadly, Chalmers died before he completed the Old Testament.

From October 1841 - May 1847 Chalmers compiled these "Sabbath Readings" as he systematically worked through every chapter in the New Testament and Genesis 1 - 2 Kings 11.

NEW CROSSWAY SERIES OF 10 SHORT CLASSICS FROM THE PAST
Jonathan Edwards, Thomas Chalmers, C.H. Spurgeon, B.B. Warfield, J.C. Ryle, Henry Scougal, Francis Schaeffer, Martin Luther, Lemuel Haynes & J.I. Packer

A NEW SERIES OF 10 GREAT CLASSICS FROM GIFTED PASTORS IS BRAND NEW.

The Crossway Short Classics series seeks to serve two purposes. First, it aims to beautifully preserve these short historic pieces of writing through new high-quality physical editions. Second, it aims to transmit them to a new generation of readers, especially readers who may not be inclined or able to access a larger volume. Short-form content is especially valuable today, as the challenge of focusing in a distracting, constantly moving world becomes more intense. The volumes in the Short Classics series present incisive, gospel-centered grace and truth through a concise, memorable medium. By connecting readers with these accessible works, the Short Classics series hopes to introduce Christians to those great heroes of the faith who wrote them, providing readers with representative works that both nourish the soul and inspire further study...

Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit will use these short works to arrest your attention, preach the gospel to your soul, and motivate you to continue exploring the treasure chest of church history, to the praise and glory of God in Christ.

(1) HEAVEN IS A WORLD OF LOVE by Jonathan Edwards w/ Foreword by Sam Storms

In this classic exposition of 1 Corinthians 13:8–10, Jonathan Edwards exhorts Christians to ponder the love of God—both here in the world and in expectation of heaven. The things of this world are temporary, but “love never ends” (1 Cor. 13:8). God’s love is a foretaste of future glory, made available through communion with the Holy Spirit. Each page is rich with pastoral insights that will leave readers hungry to experience more of God’s love in eager anticipation of heaven.

Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) was a pastor, theologian, and missionary. He is generally considered the greatest American theologian. A prolific writer, Edwards is known for his many sermons, including "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," and his classic A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections. Edwards was appointed president of the College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton University) shortly before his death.

(2) THE EXPULSIVE POWER OF A NEW AFFECTION by Thomas Chalmers w/ Foreword by John Piper

In this powerful sermon, Thomas Chalmers inspires Christians to remove the snares and tangles of sin—not through legalistic obedience but through the power of a new and greater affection for God. Chalmers reminds God’s saints that as sojourners living in this world, true power over the trials and sins of this life is found only in desiring Jesus Christ.

Thomas Chalmers (1780–1847) was a Scottish preacher, theologian, and author who served as professor of theology at the University of St. Andrews and the University of Edinburgh. His many writings were primarily focused on the application of Christian ethics to the social issues of his day.

(3) ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE DEPRESSED by Charles H. Spurgeon w/ Foreword by Randy Alcorn

In this classic sermon, Charles Spurgeon gently urges those struggling with depression to cast their burdens upon the Lord, who will not forsake his people. Having battled depression and discouragement himself for most of his years in ministry, Spurgeon encourages the downtrodden to hold fast to the promises of God, for he is steadfast and will comfort his children as they walk faithfully with him.

Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) was an English Baptist pastor at New Park Street Chapel, London (which later became the Metropolitan Tabernacle), for thirty-eight years. As the nineteenth century's most prolific preacher and writer, his ministry legacy continues today.

Like the apostle Paul, the often jovial Spurgeon was “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” (2 Cor. 6:10 ESV). Near the end of his words that you’re about to read, Spurgeon says, “Glory be to God for the furnace, the hammer, and the file. Heaven shall be all the fuller of bliss because we have been filled with anguish here below, and earth shall be better tilled because of our training in the school of adversity.”

(4) THE EMOTIONAL LIFE OF OUR LORD by Benjamin B. Warfield with Foreword by Sinclair B. Ferguson

In the search to understand the deity of Christ, Christians might overlook what the Bible reveals about his humanity. Did Jesus really feel emotions? What grieved him? What delighted him? How did Jesus—fully human and fully God—react to the world and people around him? Throughout Scripture, Jesus displays a range of emotions that can help believers understand him more intimately.

In 'The Emotional Life of Our Lord', theologian B. B. Warfield explains how Christ’s complex emotions and personality proved his humanity. It was necessary for Christ to be born in the likeness of mankind to bear their griefs, carry their sorrows, take their infirmities, and ultimately redeem their lives. In this encouraging book, readers learn to see Christ as a compassionate Savior through his sinless expressions of emotions—from righteous anger to abiding love.

This brand new edition of Warfield's classic is beautifully introduced by Sinclair B. Ferguson, a brilliant theologian in his own right, who says the following: "The work that has left the deepest impression on me is this essay on 'The Emotional Life of Our Lord'. It is the hidden jewel of his writings. I say “hidden” because although it first appeared in 1912, it was not included in the ten-volume set of his works and therefore has not had the prominence it deserves. More significantly, it is also a “jewel.” The subject matter—our Lord’s emotions—is one that Christians have often neglected, and in doing so have deprived themselves of a vital element in the gospel...So, here is 'The Emotional Life of our Lord'. I hope that by its closing sentences you will have a sense that as you have read it, Christ himself has walked toward you from the pages of Scripture"

(5) FIGHTING FOR HOLINESS by J.C. Ryle with Foreword by Andrew Atherstone

“True Christianity is a fight,” wrote J. C. Ryle in 1870. He argued that from the day of their conversion until the day they die, Christians are called to be soldiers for Christ in a war for their holiness. This inspiring call to action written over 150 years ago continues to be a source of great encouragement and inspiration for believers today.

In this addition to the Crossway Short Classics series, Ryle explains why the fight for holiness is one of absolute necessity for Christians. Identifying the three main enemies of every believer—the world, the flesh, and the devil—he emboldens them to “either fight or be lost” in their daily battle and offers biblical and historical examples of notable Christian “soldiers.” 'Fighting for Holiness' is a bold reminder for believers to daily put on the whole armor of God and train their eyes on Christ.

In his helpful Foreword Andrew Atherstone gives the following helpful background to this material: "Are You Fighting? was written in December 1870, when armed conflict between Prussia and France was engulfing continental Europe. French forces were starved into submission in the Siege of Metz and routed at the Battle of Sedan. Napoleon III, Empereur des Français, was captured and deposed, and German troops encircled Paris. The British government maintained a studied neutrality, but the newspapers were filled every day with dramatic reports from across the English Channel. It presaged the Great War of the next generation... But Ryle saw the opportunity to drive home a spiritual lesson. The Franco-Prussian War was the preacher’s hook to lay hold of an audience and challenge them about fighting the Christian war. His tract was designed to be highly engaging, and easy to give away to friends and neighbors, sold in bulk at two shillings per dozen... Ryle’s writing has an urgent, evangelistic heartbeat. He pleads with us to take seriously the pursuit of holiness. In an age when the character and conduct of Christians are often indistinguishable from the secular world—as endemic today as in the 1870s—it is an appeal we desperately need to hear."

(6) THE LIFE OF GOD IN THE SOUL OF MAN by Henry Scougal w/ Foreword by Joel Beeke

A Classic Guide for Christians Who Want to Move from Empty Religion to Authentic Faith

Writing to a friend who was disillusioned by religion, minister and theologian Henry Scougal created what would become a classic text on Christian living. Compassionately explaining what true religion is and isn’t, Scougal shares biblical practices that lead to real spiritual transformation.

In The Life of God in the Soul of Man, Scougal cuts through false ideas about religion and demonstrates how to pursue true unity with God. He explains that religion shouldn’t be primarily focused on restraining or dictating outward behavior, but living a divine life characterized by faith, a love for God and others, purity, and humility. As it did for the recipient of Scougal’s original letter, this book challenges believers to turn from empty religion and allow the Holy Spirit to conform them into Christ’s glorious image.

(7) THE LORD'S WORK IN THE LORD'S WAY & NO LITTLE PEOPLE by Francis Schaeffer w/ Foreword by Ray Ortlund

A Collection of Sermons on Christian Leadership from Theologian Francis A. Schaeffer

Christians serving the Lord can fall into two traps: depending too heavily on their own power or underestimating their God-given purpose. In this collection of classic sermons, renowned theologian and philosopher Francis A. Schaeffer teaches believers how to rely on the Holy Spirit—not personal effort or status—in matters of service and leadership.

This short book includes an excerpt from Schaeffer’s sermon, “The Lord’s Work in the Lord’s Way,” plus 2 sermons from the book No Little People. Covering topics including humility and servanthood, Christian office, spiritual battles, and trusting God’s methods, Schaeffer encourages pastors, students, and church members to live as consecrated people, working humbly for God’s approval instead of human praise.

(8) THE FREEDOM OF A CHRISTIAN: A New Translation by Martin Luther with Foreword by Carl Trueman

Martin Luther’s Classic Work, Newly Translated by Robert Kolb

Originally published in 1520, The Freedom of a Christian is one of Martin Luther’s most well-known and enduring treatises. In it, the German Reformer examines Christian ethics and how justification by faith alone impacts the liberty of believers. He famously writes, “A Christian is a free lord of everything and subject to no one. A Christian is a willing servant of everything and subject to everyone.” Luther also further develops ideas and doctrines that were key to the Reformation, such as the priesthood of all believers and union with Christ.

This addition to the Crossway Short Classics series features a new translation from the original German to English by renowned Reformation scholar Robert Kolb. The Freedom of a Christian reminds modern-day readers that it is ultimately grace that transforms God’s people and frees us to love and obey.

(9) SELECTED SERMONS by Lemuel Haynes with Foreword by Jared Wilson

The Crossway Short Classics Series Presents Rare Sermons from Black Puritan Minister Lemuel Haynes

Born in 1753, Lemuel Haynes was an indentured servant who grew to become a dynamic Reformed preacher. Nicknamed “The Black Puritan,” he is credited as being the first African-American ordained for ministry in the United States. This addition to the Crossway Short Classics series presents some of Haynes’s important yet little-known work.

Selected Sermons features 4 rarely published sermons, along with a biography of Haynes. In “Universal Salvation,” he preaches on the reality of hell and the character of Satan. “A Sermon on John 3:3” explores Jesus’s command to be born again. “The Character and Work of a Spiritual Watchman Described” details qualifications for gospel ministers, and in “Liberty Further Extended,” he presents a biblical argument against slavery and oppression. This collection of Haynes’s sermons offers readers robust spiritual insight and a closer look at an extraordinary figure in church history.

(10) WHAT DID THE CROSS ACHIEVE? by J.I. Packer, with Foreword Mark Dever

A Classic Essay on Penal Substitutionary Atonement from Theologian J. I. Packer

Penal substitutionary atonement—the belief that Jesus’s death on the cross satisfied God’s wrath against sin—is central to the Christian faith, but frequently debated. Is it just to punish an innocent person in place of the guilty? How can the temporary death of one substitute for the eternal death of many? Why doesn’t the cross grant Christians unlimited permission to sin?

In this famous essay, late theologian J. I. Packer analyzes Scripture and the works of early Reformers to defend the truth of Christ’s substitutionary suffering and death, the heart of the Christian gospel. Considered one of the most significant short works on penal substitutionary atonement from the 20th century, this careful, concise essay has influenced prominent theologians and is essential reading for students, pastors, and laypeople.

**From Renowned Theologian J. I. Packer: This work was originally delivered as a Tyndale Biblical Theology Lecture

**Part of the Crossway Short Classics Series: Other titles include The Lord’s Work in the Lord’s Way and No Little People; The Life of God in the Soul of Man; and Fighting for Holiness

**Includes a Foreword by Mark Dever

THE THEOLOGY AND THEOLOGIANS OF SCOTLAND: 1560-1750
James Walker

This volume has been described by Dr. John MacLeod himself the author of a work Scottish theology as 'masterly work . . . In its own department a classic.' The author begins with a survey of the of the leading theologians of Scotland from John Knox, through the Covenanters to Thomas Boston and the Erskines. He assesses their contributions to the development of theological understanding and examines their views on the doctrines of predestination and providence, the atonement, the visible church and the headship of Christ.

ORIGINALLY DELIVERED AS THE CUNNINGHAM LECTURES IN MARCH 1871.

JAMES WALKER (1821-1891) was born at Carnwath where his father was a minister. While a student at Edinburgh he came under the influence of Dr. Thomas Chalmers. According to his mother "he became immensely more serious and earnest so that his whole family became affected by his spirit." On completion of his divinity course in 1843 he cast in his lot with the newly formed Free Church of Scotland. He received a call to his native Carnwath and was ordained and inducted there in September of that year.

Walker's ministry at Carnwath was to last 33 years. In his preaching he was heart-searching and deeply spirituial and in pastoral visitation he was diligent. Like so many other places, Carnwath was visited by the Revival of 1859-60.

A diligent student and a good classical scholar Walker took a special interewst in Church history. Papers on the Eastern Church were published in the 'Family Treasury.' He was the first pastor to be invited to give the Cunningham Lectures, delivered in March 1871 and which forms the content of this volume.

Ill-health prevented him from revising the lectures for publication, influenced him to withdraw his name from election to the Church History Chair at the Free Church College in Glasgow and led to his retirement from his charge in 1876. He died at Edinburgh in 1891.

The Family Worship Bible Commentary is a collection of family worship-style devotions on every chapter of the Bible, by over 180 authors from the 19th century Church. 'The Family Worship Bible Commentary is packed with a veritable treasure of intellectually stimulating and spiritually rich material designed for family reading and worship but is equally suitable for private worship. We are in Andrew Camp’s debt for bringing all of this valuable material together, and pray that God’s rich blessings may rest upon it also for your family. Heartily recommended!' -Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

'Anything that can encourage the practice of daily family worship is worthy of support. These volumes are especially helpful in that they not only take a family through the whole Bible but also provide the richest spiritual fare in the accompanying devotionals. Use daily to transform your family’s lives and even their eternity.' -David Murray

"The Nineteenth Century Scots were zealous to reinvigorate the whole field of Reformed faith and practice. This included the revitalizing of Family Worship, a mainstay of Reformed Protestants since the 16th Century. Contributors to the Family Worship Bible Commentary include such Presbyterian luminaries as Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847), James Bannerman (1807-1868), William Cunningham (1805-1861), Robert Murray M'Cheyne (1813-1843), and Alexander Whyte (1836-1921). The revival of family-centered Christian devotion and family-based instruction is one of the great needs in our environment today of aggressive secularism. We are indebted to Andrew Camp for rescuing from the church attic this rich product of the past, dusting it off, and making it available to our families today." -Pastor Terry Johnson, Independent Presbyterian Church, Savannah, Georgia; Author of 'The Family Worship Book'

"I thank the Lord for Andrew Camp for his labors to bring back these treasures for family worship in the 'Family Worship Bible Commentary.' When a family has been instructed in the 'whole counsel of God,' the impact is enormous. I pray that God would give our generation a revival of families who journey through the entire Bible year after year and that they will be able to mine this treasure trove as they do." -Scott Brown, President, National Center for Family-Integrated Churches
