A NOTE FROM DR. JOHN SNYDER:

"When the Behold Your God: Rethinking God Biblically study was released in 2013, we felt (as did many others) that the evangelical churches needed to face some hard questions. Many had carefully traced the symptoms of an internal decay within evangelicalism, a decay that was occurring even while outwardly there appeared to be continued successes. Behold Your God: Rethinking God Biblically was written with the desire to help stir God's people by pointing them back to the fountainhead—God Himself. Precious time was being wasted as Western evangelicals attempted to fix the external problems. It was our belief that the surest hope of a cure was to deal with the root issue, and that root issue appeared to be an inadequate understanding of our own God.

The response to that study, by God's grace, has been far greater than we could have imagined. During the last five years the emails, letters, and personal testimonies of those who have benefitted from the study have been gratefully received. It is always humbling to see God use our efforts as a part of something far greater than anything we could accomplish. Within these communications there has been a recurrent question: where do I go to find more resources on the character of God? Thankfully, there are many fine treatments of God's perfections. Often, however, they are either very large or very complex books. In response to this question, we have put together this new study dealing primarily with the attributes of God rather than ways the evangelical church often lives below His self-revelation. In a sense, The Weight of Majesty is a continuation of the theme we explored in week one of Rethinking God Biblically—that God Himself is the great attraction of the Christian life. By His help we hope to continue going deeper into the themes that were introduced in the original study through several forthcoming installments in the Behold Your God series.

Nothing is so satisfying for the true Christian as an ever-increasing and experiential knowledge of our God. This cannot be gained safely without diligently searching the Bible. Therefore, the real purpose of this book is to guide you back into those passages which contain some of the most significant descriptions of God. Avoid the temptation to merely get through the exercises without wrestling honestly with these matters. Sit long at the feet our Heavenly Father and ask Him to tell you about Himself. We know it is too easy to check a box, fill in the blank with the correct word, and move on unaffected. Don't settle for undigested concepts or merely emotional responses to passages. Plead with God to help you adjust everything in life to fit what you are learning about Him. Bring both your mind and heart together, and bow before God in real worship as you study each day, until like Job you feel compelled to say, 'I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear; but now my eye sees You!' You will not be disappointed with the Living God.

May this study be a lifelong friend as we labor to live unto God.

TO THE JUDICIOUS AND IMPARTIAL READER: An Exposition of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith
James M. Renihan

BAPTIST SYMBOLICS: VOLUME TWO

To the Judicious and Impartial Reader is an exposition of what is popularly known as the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith, a document translated into many languages and used by churches around the world for almost 350 years. The Exposition seeks to illuminate and explain the theology of the Confession by setting it into its historical and theological context. It examines relevant primary source expositions of Scripture and theological treatises from the post-Reformation and Puritan eras, including the writings of the men who subscribed to it. Modern readers will be able to discern how the first churches to publish the Confession understood its doctrines and practices.

ENDORSEMENTS

"To the Judicious and Impartial Reader is a trove of theological insight and research that situates the Second London Confession in its early modern context. Illuminated by documents and debates of the period, Dr. Renihan shines welcomed light on this important confession of faith. His diligent labors will benefit future generations of Reformed Baptists but it will also serve many others who profess the Westminster Confession and Savoy Declaration. Detailed in its analysis, thorough in its scope, and aimed at the heart, Dr. Renihan’s work is must-reading." -J. V. Fesko, Harriet Barbour Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology Reformed Theological Seminary | Jackson, Mississippi

"James M. Renihan presents here a magisterial exposition of the Second London Confession of 1677/1689— the most influential confessional document in Baptist history. A work of solid scholarship and genuine theological retrieval, destined to become a classic. Highly recommended!" -Timothy George, Distinguished Professor | Beeson Divinity School of Samford University General editor of the 29-volume Reformation Commentary on Scripture.

"This well-researched and historically sensitive exposition offers readers an indispensable guide to the Second London Baptist Confession. In clear, convincing fashion James Renihan explains what the Confession’s language would have meant to its original readers, excavates the various backgrounds which informed its composition, and points contemporary readers towards a fresh appreciation of both the Confession itself and the faith it sets forth. In doing so, Renihan successfully locates seventeenth-century English Calvinistic Baptists within the wider tradition of Reformed Protestantism with which they would have identified." -Dr. Matthew C. Bingham, Lecturer in Systematic Theology and Church History | Oak Hill College

"We are indebted to James Renihan for this masterful study of the 1689 Confession in its original historical context. His insights, drawn largely from primary sources and the fruit of more than twenty years of teaching on the Confession, illuminate and explain the text in a most helpful and edifying manner. We are led to understand the controversies of the 17th century, many of which are still relevant today. While we are grateful to Dr. Renihan for his labours in historical theology, he reminds us that the ultimate goal is not veneration of the Confession itself; it is a means of leading us back to the Scriptures, to worship and adore the Lord and rejoice in our great salvation. There is much here to profit the reader." -Bill James, Principal | London Seminary

"While not a Reformed Baptist myself, I have long appreciated the 2LBCF as a key artifact of Baptist history and theology. Its commitment to historic Christian orthodoxy and its bold proclamation of the formal and material principles of the Reformation, sola scriptura & justification by faith alone, are in and of themselves enough to recommend it as a model of a reformational and catholic (small c!) spirit. When we recognize this spirit alongside the confession’s doctrinal precision and clarity and its exposition of congregational credo-baptist distinctives, we see that it is a confession- al model for all Christians, Baptist and non-Baptist alike. James Renihan’s careful consideration of this foundational seventeenth century text elucidates its doctrinal beauty, truth, and goodness and brings it to bear on us today. Through retrieving this early Baptist statement of faith, Renihan aids all traditions in their pursuit of biblical and theological fidelity." -Dr. Matthew Y. Emerson, Professor of Religion | Dean of Theology, Arts, and Humanities Oklahoma Baptist University

"This book is required reading for anyone who wants to understand seventeenth reformed theology in general or what it means to be a reformed Baptist. The exposition of the confession sets it in its historical context and illuminates its meaning using the sources of the doctrine summarized in it. It also explores the structure of the confession expertly. Modern Baptists are theologically diverse to the point of confusion in many cases and this study of our origins can help bring clarity to the question of what it means to confess the faith of our forefathers. It is a must read for anyone interested in Baptist theology." - Craig A. Carter, Research Professor of Theology Tyndale University.

"In this second volume on Baptist Symbolics, Dr. Renihan gives us his “contextual historical exposition” of the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689. Renihan allows us to hear the discussions of the authors of our Confession as they endeavored to align themselves with historical confessional biblical Orthodoxy. He examines the words and phrases of the Confession with incisive clarity and relevance to our own current situation. Here we learn how to express biblical catholicity while humbly holding to our baptistic convictions that Renihan explains, defends, and endorses with convincing cogency." -Alan Dunn, Pastor | Grace Covenant Baptist Church Flemington, New Jersey

"James M. Renihan in his To the Judicious and Impartial Reader: A Contextual-Historical Exposition of the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith has given to the Christian world a veritable exegesis of our Confession. This is the fruit of our beloved brother’s love for Christ, Church, Scripture, and Confession – in that order – and I greatly regret not having this book before, especially since it has been my privilege to study and teach the Confession to the church which I serve. No Reformed Baptist should again teach the Confession before reading this marvelous Exposition." -Francisco Orozco, Pastor | Iglesia Bautista Reformada Professor | Universidad Autonoma de Chihuahua Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua Mexico

"James Renihan states, “I have made a conscious decision (with a few exceptions) not to interact with modern interpretations of the theological statements of the seventeenth century confessions which may differ from my own conclusions. The aim of this book is not primarily polemic but rather explanatory. From my perspective, the key question is what did the confession mean?” He has been faithful to his purpose and the result is a rich, comprehensive work of historical and systematic theology worthy of a lifetime of study and meditation. His engagement with the complete milieu of theological writing, beginning with the Particular Baptists of the seventeenth-century and including the Puritan literature that would have most influenced them, sets the confession in its most original doctrinal context and yields a rich and faithful engagement with the treasure of doctrinal truth so clearly expressed in it. He has given a four-fold structure to the entire confession, shown the logic of doctrinal connection between the heads within each of the four divisions, and shown the inner-connections within each paragraph of the various heads. Renihan also has incorporated the genre of “pious meditations” on the family of confessions to which the Second London Confession belongs and has thus been enabled to turn doctrine into devotion without becoming disconnected from the rigorously developed propositions of divine revelation. This work should be a consistently consulted treasure of truth-centered theological instruction and grace-centered, Christ centered, God-centered spiritual formation." - Tom J. Nettles, Louisville, KY

THE HIDDEN LIFE OF PRAYER: The Life-Blood of the Christian
David McIntyre (1859-1938)

Private or secret prayer is the life–blood of the Christian. The great men and women of God down through the ages have testified to the effectiveness of this in their lives. Some like Martin Luther, have said that they could not survive a busy day without spending 2–3 hours alone with God. Drawing on the experiences of people like Luther, Spurgeon, Muller, Whitefield and Wesley, the author presses the case for a greater commitment to prayer. His advice may not only transform your life, it could be a catalyst towards a change in the world around you.

"God brings books at their appointed times. The Hidden Life of Prayer arrived late but well-timed. This little jewel-strewn tapestry has done for me at 64 what Bounds' Power Through Prayer did at 34. I could be ashamed that I need inspiration for the highest privilege. But I choose to be thankful." -John Piper, Founder of Desiring God Ministries, Chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary, Minneapolis, Minnesota

"We hardly get a glimpse today of the prayer life which this book gives evidence. Hardly surprising that it comes recommended by such men as Geoff Thomas, Wayne Grudem and John Piper. Read it slowly and let the author instruct you in prayer." -The Evangelical Magazine, Published by Evangelical Movement of Wales

"I have read The Hidden Life of Prayer again and again since Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia first gave it to me when I visited there as a prospective student forty years ago. Every time I read this book, the Lord uses it to deepen my prayer life and encourage my faith. I strongly recommend it!" -Wayne Grudem, Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary, Phoenix, Arizona

"It was in 1971 I first read this book I was shown a copy in Al Martin's home and he told me how he used it, which plan I took up enthusiastically and have used ever since. I have read it through aloud during a week of morning meetings with various assistants and with deacons before they have started work... Every time I read it I discover something fresh, convicting and helpful. The book does not make you afraid of prayer. It has a fragrance of Disruption times and the Awakening in the middle of the 19th century, in fact the author was born in that great year of 1859. He later married the daughter of Andrew Bonar and that warm piety and close walk with God characterizes this, McIntyre's best book." -Geoff Thomas, Conference Speaker and author, Aberystwyth, Wales

A COMMENTARY ON REVELATION: VOLUME ONE - Chapters 1-3; VOLUME TWO - Chapters 4 - 11 and VOLUME THREE - Chapters 12-22
James Durham, edited by Chris Coldwell

BRAND NEW PRINTING OF A COMMENTARY ON REVELATION BY JAMES DURHAM IN A THREE-VOLUME SET.

English Puritanism and Scottish Presbyterianism in the seventeenth century had many bright and shining lights. Of these, James Durham (1622–1658), ranks alongside the greatest of his generation, for his theological depth, faithful preaching, and particularly for his moderate spirit at a time when such was in scarce supply. While he could have been a professor of theology in any university, Durham instead spent a brief ten year ministry preaching and lecturing for the most part in the Inner-Kirk of Glasgow Cathedral. It was thought that he poured so much of himself into his studies for sermons and lectures that it brought about his early death at the age of thirty-six. His works were often reprinted and left an impression that lasted for centuries. Recently, all of his sermons in two volumes and his lectures on the Book of Job and on the Ten Commandments have been published in new critical editions. Continuing with his lectures, the publishers are pleased to offer now a new critical edition of James Durham’s largest book, which, while it is his more theologically intense work, retains the same practical Uses and Applications of his sermons and other lectures.

“This commentary on Revelation provides what was, as Principal John MacLeod said, ‘in past days, the accepted Protestant view of that book.’ While James Durham’s historicist reading of Revelation is no longer the standard view, that should not deter readers, for, as Spurgeon said, ‘it would not be easy to find a more sensible and instructive work than this old-fashioned exposition. We cannot accept its interpretations of the mysteries, but the mystery of the gospel fills it with sweet savor.’ The finest treasure in this commentary is not, however, Durham’s exegetical work (helpful though this is!). Contained in his commentary are independent treatises which are the purest of theological gold. These extended essays present Reformed thought at its best. As Richard A. Muller has said, this work ‘offers significant access to seventeenth-century Reformed and Presbyterian thought ... Durham’s work illustrates the relationship of Scripture with doctrine and piety and dogmatics.’ ” — Donald John MacLean, author of James Durham (1622–1658): And the Gospel Offer in its Seventeenth-Century Context

VOLUME ONE. Lectures on Chapters 1–3. This first of three projected volumes comprises a third of the lectures and fully half of the theological essays. The text covers chapter one in nine lectures (the most on any chapter) and the letters to the seven churches in Asia. The theological lectures contained cover such subjects as the doctrine of the Trinity, a call to the ministry and qualifications for the ministry, church government and church discipline, repentance, the difference in common and saving grace, and preaching and application in preaching. The text has been collated with a 1653 manuscript and an appendix contains texts and full lectures that are significantly different than the published edition of 1658. A new biography will appear in volume two. Volume three will contain a bibliographical essay covering Durham’s works and recent manuscript discoveries, as well as the indices, including an index of errata of prior editions.

John Owen called James Durham, "one of good learning, sound judgement, and every way 'a workman that needeth not to be ashamed.'" To read Durham on Revelation is to find proof of this. His commentary provides what was, as Principal John MacLeod said, "in past days, the accepted Protestant view of that book". While Durham's historicist reading of Revelation is no longer the standard view, that should not deter readers, for, as Spurgeon said, “it would not be easy to find a more sensible and instructive work than this old-fashioned exposition. We cannot accept its interpretations of the mysteries, but the mystery of the gospel fills it with sweet savour.” The finest treasure in this commentary is not, however, Durham's exegetical work (helpful though this is!). Contained in his commentary are independent treatises which are the purest of theological gold. Make what you will of Durham's interpretation of Revelation, but extended essays on the Trinity, the call to the ministry, the nature of justification, and so on present Reformed thought at its best. As Richard A. Muller has said, this work “offers significant access to seventeenth-century Reformed and Presbyterian thought ... Durham’s work illustrates the relationship of Scripture with doctrine and piety and dogmatics.” Taken all in all, readers of this work will surely ultimately agree with Durham's contemporary Robert Blair, who said of this work, "Many Writers have done worthily, but thou excellest them all.”

PIETY'S WISDOM
A Summary of Calvin's Institutues w/ Study Questions
J. Mark Beach

John Calvin's The Institutes of the Christian Religion presents one of the most winsome, thought-provoking, spiritually inspiring, and heart-searching summations of Christian truth ever written.

Although works exist that either offer an analysis of Calvin's views or serve as a guide to his Institutes, none fully share the aim of J. Mark Beach's Piety's Wisdom.

Keeping to the form, shape, and tenor of Calvin's own work, Piety's Wisdom offers busy pastors, seminarians, interested college students, and motivated laypersons a book that presents Calvin on his own terms. This summary can be used as an introduction to the Christian faith, as a primer for the study of Calvin, or a combination of each. While the book is suitable for individual study, the inclusion of study questions makes it an ideal tool for facilitating discussion in adult study groups.

"J. Mark Beach has provided us with a concise guide to Calvin's Institutes that succeeds in identifying its contours and emphases. Calvin's magnum opus can prove tricky for the uninitiated and this volume will be invaluable as a quick and precise summary of the Reformer's thought. An ideal accompaniment for those eager to get their teeth into one of the most important theological texts ever written." -Derek W. H. Thomas

"Mark Beach's Piety's Wisdom provides a finely done summary and analysis of Calvin's Institutes that should be of considerable service to Christian laity, pastors, and students in coming to terms with the thought of the Genevan Reformer. Beach writes clearly and concisely, and with considerable insight into Calvin's thought. The book includes a short biographical sketch and a contextual introduction to the Institutes. It stands as one of the best and most trustworthy introductions to Calvin presently available." -Richard A. Muller

"Though road maps (or a GPS) are no substitute for the experience of traveling through the country side, they can be a great help to the traveler in identifying the best route and the highpoints of the trip. J. Mark Beach's 'Piety's Wisdom' is such a help for the reader who hopes to travel or navigate his or her way through Calvin's great exposition of the Christian faith, The Institutes. Written for the general reader, Beach offers a useful guide that identifies the important landmarks, points the way through, and thereby whets the reader's appetite for a first-hand acquaintance with Calvin's theology." - Cornelis P. Venema

CHRIST AND THE DECREE: Christology and Predestination in Reformed Theology from Calvin to Perkins
Richard Muller

"A wealth of valuable research and trenchant observations in an area of Reformed thought which often is neglected, and even more often treated only with superficial scholarship. . . . This book is worthy of reflection and argument."--Michael Jinkins, Scottish Journal of Theology

In Christ and the Decree, one of the foremost scholars of Calvinism today expounds the doctrines of Christ and predestination as they were developed by Calvin, Bullinger, Musculus, Vermigli, Beza, Ursinus, Zanchi, Polanus, and Perkins. Muller analyzes the relationship of these two doctrines to each other and to the soteriological structure of the system.

Back by demand, this seminal work on the relationship between Calvin and the Calvinists is once again available with a new contextualizing preface by the author. It offers a succinct introduction to the early development of Calvinism/Reformation thought.

"This reprinting is accompanied by a new preface from the author in which Muller provides his readers with insights as to how he would write the book differently today, including employing a different methodology, though his conclusions would be essentially the same. . . . This lucidly argued, densely end-noted volume should be quite helpful reading for anyone seeking to understand more clearly the development of Reformed orthodoxy and the debate over Calvin and the Calvinists."--Robert E. Sagers, Religious Studies Review

Divine Will and Human Choice Freedom, Contingency, and Necessity in Early Modern Reformed Thought
RICHARD MULLER

The relationship between divine providence and human freedom remains one of the most vexing topics in Christian theology. Many gravitate to extreme ends of the spectrum, with a version of hyper-Calvinism on one end or perhaps some form of open theism on the other. Christian theology seems ever in search of a way to articulate a balanced picture of a sovereign God in relationship to humans who can make choices.

This fresh study from an internationally respected scholar of the Reformation and post-Reformation eras shows how the Reformers and their successors analyzed and reconciled the concepts of divine sovereignty and human freedom. Richard Muller argues that traditional Reformed theology supported a robust theory of an omnipotent divine will and human free choice and drew on a tradition of Western theological and philosophical discussion that included such predecessor thinkers as Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scotus. In arguing this case, the book provides historical perspective on a topic of current interest and debate--the issue of freedom and determinism--and offers a corrective based on a broader analysis of the sources.

"Few scholars possess Richard Muller's knowledge of early modern theology or his ability to analyze with precision Reformed teaching on the central question of divine and human causality. The breadth and depth of Muller's command of Reformed thought displayed in this book are unrivaled, ensuring that Divine Will and Human Choice will quickly establish itself as a must-read for all students of Protestant theology." -Bruce Gordon, Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History, Yale Divinity School

"There is not a more contested area in the study of Reformed orthodoxy than issues of divine foreknowledge, human free will, and the nature of contingency. The matter is highly complicated and involves multiple questions of interpretation and reception, including how Aristotle was appropriated by medieval schoolmen, such as Aquinas and Scotus, and how the medievals were then used by the Reformed. Those new to the field can easily become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of primary literature and the confusing subtlety of the arguments. In this context, Divine Will and Human Choice by Richard Muller is a welcome addition to the literature because it offers both the neophyte and the scholar a superb account of the various questions involved and provides judicious critiques of the contemporary debate." -Carl R. Trueman, Paul Woolley Professor of Church History, Westminster Theological Seminary

"Written by a great historical theologian and seminal thinker, this book is crucial for understanding a central debate in Christianity: God's sovereignty and human free will. There is no one as gifted at navigating these deep waters as Richard Muller. All theologians, pastors, and students of theology who desire a deeper understanding of how early Reformed divines affirmed absolute divine sovereignty without teaching fatalistic determinism should read this book." -Joel R. Beeke, president, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

CALVIN AND THE REFORMED TRADITION: On the Work of Christ and the Order of Salvation
RICHARD MULLER

Richard Muller, a world-class scholar of the Reformation era, examines the relationship of Calvin's theology to the Reformed tradition, indicating Calvin's place in the tradition as one of several significant second-generation formulators. Muller argues that the Reformed tradition is a diverse and variegated movement not suitably described either as founded solely on the thought of John Calvin or as a reaction to or deviation from Calvin, thereby setting aside the old "Calvin and the Calvinists" approach in favor of a more integral and representative perspective. Muller offers historical corrective and nuance on topics of current interest in Reformed theology, such as limited atonement/universalism, union with Christ, and the order of salvation.

Contents

1. From Reformation to Orthodoxy: The Reformed Tradition in the Early Modern Era

2. Was Calvin a Calvinist?

3. Calvin on Christ's Satisfaction and Its Efficacy: The Issue of "Limited Atonement"

4. A Tale of Two Wills? Calvin, Amyraut, and Du Moulin on Ezekiel 18:23

5. Davenant and Du Moulin: Variant Approaches to Hypothetical Universalism

"Meticulous attention to texts and their contexts, expressed in Muller's own lively, precise language and expressing his astute assessment of the theologians he studies, marks this collection of new and old from the leading living scholar of the practice of Reformed theology in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Muller takes readers into the intellectual world and the thinking of Calvin and a number of others, representatives of Calvin's own time and of the following generation. Muller plumbs the depths of their teaching in their historical settings with judiciousness and acumen while clarifying the intricate relationships among Reformed thinkers. He places his own monumental work into the framework of current scholarly discussion and of the sources which have produced his insights in ways that will bring readers at every level of familiarity with Reformed theology much deeper into its riches." -Robert Kolb, missions professor emeritus, Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis

"Calvin and the Reformed Tradition is a masterful and penetrating look into critical dimensions of Calvin's soteriology in relation to the Reformed tradition. Richard Muller presents here the fruit of decades of careful research into sixteenth- and seventeenth-century sources. Sometimes he gives us a satellite view of conflicting master narratives in retelling Reformation and post-Reformation theology. At other times he gives us a microscopic view of specific texts in Calvin's works, carefully analyzed in their context. At every turn he calls scholars to careful definition of terms and the avoidance of imposing anachronisms on early modern writers. Students of historical theology with an interest in matters such as the divine intent of Christ's death, the free offer of the gospel, the will of God for salvation, union with Christ, and the relation of assurance of salvation to the fruit of the Spirit will find this book challenging, illuminating, and helpful." - Joel R. Beeke, president, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

"This forcefully written and persuasively argued book casts in relief the diversity and complexity of the Reformed tradition in the early modern period. With an astonishing grasp of a broad range of sources, Muller offers a challenging and illuminating examination of the tightly woven relations between theology and history. The analysis is penetrating and the arguments break new ground, all in conversation with generations of scholarship on Reformed thought. Essential reading." -Bruce Gordon, professor of Reformation history, Yale Divinity School

"Richard Muller has been the key player in the extensive revision of how the theology of Calvin and his contemporaries is understood to relate to that of the later Reformed tradition. In this collection, he provides the reader with an outstanding selection of essays on this topic. Wide-ranging in scope, penetrating in argument, and breathtaking in scholarship, these essays are representative of Richard Muller at his very best. A scholarly cornucopia."-Carl R. Trueman, Paul Woolley Professor of Church History, Westminster Theological Seminary

"Of the thousands of books in my academic library, there are only three titles that I treasure so highly that I keep one copy at my office and another at home. In the early years of my academic career, Richard Muller's dictionary was the very first to attain such esteemed status. Not only is it a repository of information impossible to find so quickly anywhere else, it is just a darn good read. It's a primer of Latin syntax and at the same time a sophisticated introduction to careful theology. It's a thrill to see it newly improved, some thirty years later! Serious students of Latin, serious students of theology, and--frankly--serious students of clear thought will be in Richard's debt for another generation to come. Well done!" -John L. Thompson, Fuller Theological Seminary

"If one of the most well-read theologians of his generation presents a dictionary, one has high expectations, and Richard Muller does not disappoint! Besides more common terms, one also finds here lucid explanations of rarer scholastic expressions, so that even the specialist will learn and profit from this book. This is a must-have for students and professors and for everybody who studies the Christian tradition." - Ulrich L. Lehner, Marquette University

"Few theological resources offer as much insight and useful information as Muller's dictionary. I regularly encourage my students to buy this book and read it cover to cover! This is more than a reference occasionally to be consulted; it is a key to unlocking the riches of classic Reformed theology. I highly recommend this book to students, pastors, and scholars--to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the historic Protestant faith." -J. V. THE CHRISTIAN'S REASONABLE SERVICEComplete Four Volume Hardcover Set
Wilhelmus a Brakel

Who is Wilhelmus a Brakel? (1635-1711) Wilhelmus studied theology at Franeker and Utrecht, and was particularly influenced by his mentor, Gisbertus Voetius. At the age of twenty-four he was ordained as a minister of the gospel. His sermons were Christ-centered, rich in gospel content, experiential, and addressed all who were present. After a fruitful ministry of forty-nine years, it pleased the Lord to take this eminent divine (affectionately referred to by the godly as 'Father Brakel') home to Himself in 1711 at the age of seventy-six, to receive the reward of a faithful servant.

What is 'The Christian's Reasonable Service'? It demonstrates one of the strengths of the Dutch Nadere Reformatie (Second or Further Reformation), namely, the balance between objective truth and the subjective experience of that truth. 'The Christian's Reasonable Service' is a systematic exposition of Christian doctrine, covering all of the intricacies and debated points of Reformation and post-Reformation dogmatics. This is done is scholastic fashion, with great precision and theological acumen. That being said, it was primarily written for the author's congregation and is a tremendous work of piety and pastoral concern. Brakel labors to bring practical application to each doctrine he treats, showing the value and use of the truths of God's Word. It is not enough to assent to right doctrine; one must also engage these truths with hearts of faith and repentance. Let this work be an encouragement to all who read it, and an example to today's ministers in directing doctrine to its proper end.

"Wilhelmus a Brakel's 'The Christian's Reasonable Service' is a tremendously insightful work that showcases the marriage between scholastic precision and a warm pastoral piety. + Brakel not only challenges the mind as he plumbs the depths of the teachings of Scripture, but he also challenges the heart as readers must grapple with the truth and its implications for their growth in grace. Not only can historians read a Brakel to learn about historic Reformed theology, but scholars, pastors, and lay-men can all benefit from a close reading of these wonderful volumes." J. V. Fesko, Academic Dean and Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Westminster Seminary California

"With its fine balance of Reformed doctrinal statement and application to Christian life and personal piety, a BrakelÆs 'Christian's Reasonable Service' provides a superb illustration of the theological project associated with the late seventeenth-century development of the Dutch Nadere Reformatie or 'Further Reformation.' Although it abounds in sound definition and detailed exposition, this vernacular theology was intended not for the academic setting but for the purpose of educating the laity in both faith and practice. It remains a significant study in Reformed theology even as it exemplifies the true sense of the old Reformed maxim, 'Ecclesia reformata semper reformanda' namely, that the doctrine of the

church has been reformed but the life of the Christian is always to be reformed, guided by the teachings of the Reformation. The Elshout translation beautifully conveys the sense and the spirit of a Brakel's work." - Richard A. Muller, P. J. Zondervan Professor of Histori-

cal Theology, Calvin Theological Seminary

MOODY CLASSICS
Augustine, Bounds, Bunyan, Spurgeon, Ryle, Meyer, Muller, Sanders, Stone

We are offering the following 9 Classics from Moody Press. You can order any of these titles or all of them for a deeper discount. GREAT FOR A GIFT TO A NEW CHRISTIAN, OR A CHURCH OR SCHOOL LIBRARY.

(1) ALL OF GRACE: Salvation is of the LORD by C.H. Spurgeon

C. H. Spurgeon writes, "Only God can justify the ungodly, but He can do it to perfection. He casts our sins behind His back; He blots them out. He says that though they be sought for, they shall not be found... The doctrine of the atonement is to my mind one of the surest proofs of the divine inspiration of Holy Scripture. Who would or could have thought of a just Ruler dying for the unjust rebel? "

**THIS IS ONLY ONE OF TWO TITLES WE HAVE INCLUDED IN OUR OVERSTOCK SALE**

(2) POWER THROUGH PRAYER by E.M. Bounds

Pastor and civil war chaplain E. M. Bounds penned his slim classic on prayer for the simple reason that Christians don't pray enough. "The little estimate we put on prayer is evident from the little time we give to it," he wrote. "Talking to men for God is a great thing, but talking to God for men is greater still."

(3) THE CONFESSIONS OF ST. AUGUSTINE

That Augustine was one of the greatest minds who has ever been in the church is a given, and his most well-known work, the Confessions, has a unique place among the world's great classics. The line that appears in the opening paragraph of Book 1, "our heart is restless till it rest in thee," is quoted everywhere, though not everyone who quotes it or hears it knows where it came from and may even think it's a biblical saying.

(4) THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS by John Bunyan

Join Christian and his companions on their journey to the Celestial City, as they pass through many experiences common to us all, in Bunyan's timeless allegory of the Christian's walk with God.

(5) HOLINESS: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties and Roots by J.C. Ryle

J.C. Ryle's Holiness has imparted a standing challenge to Christians for 130 years. In this new, slimmed-down series of excerpts from Ryle's masterwork, we aim to present his original message to a whole new generation. Holiness, Ryle argued, was not simply a matter of believing and feeling, but of doing.

(6) THE INCOMPARABLE CHRIST by J. Oswald Sanders

Author J. Oswald Sanders, a lawyer turned 20th century missionary statesman, follows Jesus from His pre-existence to His earthly life and coming Second Advent. Throughout it all he upholds Jesus as the powerful and perfect Savior of the world, arguing against any who would diminish His uniqueness.

(7) THE SECRET OF GUIDANCE by F.B. Meyer

F. B. Meyer writes, "The grace of purity and self-control, of fervent prayer and understanding in the Scriptures, of love for men and zeal for God, of lowliness and meekness, of gentleness and goodness - all is in Christ; and if Christ is in us, all is ours also."

(8) ANSWERS TO PRAYER by George Muller

Prayer was the vital component of George Mueller's nineteenth-century ministry to England's orphans. Through his narrative account, Mueller reveals how powerful and spiritually rewarding prayer can be in your life.

(9) NAMES OF GOD by Nathan Stone

Nathan J. Stone writes, "Indeed we cannot say all that the mysterious word God means to us until we know more about Him." God's many names reveal not only different dimensions of His character but also point to their fulfillment in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. This insightful little book accurately and clearly works through the many names of God throughout the Old Testament. We can now see God in new lights and angles as we learn of His justice, His unbounded love, His preeminence, and His character - all through His names. This book has sold over 400,000 copies.

ALL THAT IS IN GOD: Evangelical Theology and the Challenge of Classical Christian Theism
James Dolezal

Unknown to many, increasing numbers of conservative evangelicals are denying basic tenets of classical Christian teaching about God, with departures occurring even among those of the Calvinistic persuasion. James E. Dolezal's 'All That Is in God' provides an exposition of the historic Christian position while engaging with these contemporary deviations. His convincing critique of the newer position he styles 'theistic mutualism' is philosophically robust, systematically nuanced, and biblically based. It demonstrates the need to maintain the traditional viewpoint, particularly on divine simplicity, and spotlights the unfortunate implications for other important Christian doctrines-such as divine eternality and the Trinity-if it were to be abandoned. Arguing carefully and cogently that 'all that is in God is God Himself,' the work is sure to stimulate debate on the issue in years to come.

ENDORSEMENTS

"This is an important book. It deserves close attention from teachers, pastors, and students, indeed, from anyone confronted by the confused mass of misleading theologies put forth today under the guise of new and relevant reconstructions of the evangelical and Reformed faith." -from the foreword by Richard A. Muller, P. J. Zondervan Professor of Historical Theology, Emeritus, Calvin Theological Seminary

"All That Is in God is a fine sequel to the author's 'God without Parts' (2011). The chapters provide an excellent guide to the main contours of classical theism. Dr. Dolezal also sounds a timely warning to those who have been tempted to modify this theism in the interests of what he aptly calls 'theistic mutualism.' The result is an excellent, up-to-date reminder of the Christian doctrine of God as understood by the conciliar statements and by the mainstream Reformed confessions." -Paul Helm, Teaching Fellow, Regent College

"This new RHB title, which I had the privilege of editing, speaks with clarity, charity, and persuasiveness about areas of current debate in Theology Proper." -Dr. Joel Beeke

SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY: A Compendious View of Natural and Revealed Religion
JOHN BROWN of Haddington

THIS IS CURRENTLY OUT-OF-PRINT

John Brown's Systematic Theology was first published in 1782 at the request of theological students. In seven 'books,' it covers the traditional topics of revelation, God, man, Christ, personal salvation, and the church. It contains more than 26,000 proof texts and numerous exegetical insights along with a consistent covenantal emphasis, experiential depth, and compelling applications. Brown's style is methodological, including numerous divisions and sub-points to aid students, and his content is full of evangelical piety. This single volume of Reformed systematic theology is rich with content and an indispensable tool for students, pastors, and professors of theology.

ENDORSEMENTS-

"John Brown stands in continuity with both the Puritan and Dutch Reformed writers of the seventeenth century who assumed that theology was both a contemplative and a practical discipline and who assumed that the definition of Christian doctrine ought to build on exegesis and issue in praxis. All in all, this is a welcome reprint of a classic work, representative of a late eighteenth-century heir of the orthodox tradition of Puritan and Reformed theology." - Richard A. Muller

"Of John Brown of Haddington Dr. William Blaikie says that he 'towered above his fellows.' Dr. David Wright describes him as having 'the makings of a universal scholar.' His biographer calls him 'one of the best remembered names in the Scottish theology of the eighteenth century.' Yet today the name of John Brown is all but forgotten, notwithstanding his stature as one of the foremost teachers of covenantal Calvinism in the history of Scottish theology. All the more welcome, then, is this publication of Brown's Compendious View of Natural and Revealed Religion, his systematics. He pours both his vast learning and his deep piety into this overview, and now a new generation of covenantal theologians can sit at Brown's feet. I congratulate the publishers on the resurrection of this important work and wish it a wide circulation." - Iain D. Campbell, pastor of Point Free Church, Isle of Lewis, Scotland

JOHN BROWN of Haddington (1722-1787) was the leading minister in the Associate Synod during the formative years of eighteenth-century Scotland. He was a devout Christian, a gifted preacher, and a prolific writer of theology. He began life in obscure poverty, without advantage of wealth, position, title, or education. Yet God favored him with unusual gifts and an enormous capacity for hard work. Brown taught himself Greek while working in the fields. He became a man of deep spiritual experience with skill in preaching the doctrines of free grace and piety. His last words, 'my Christ,' summarize his life and thought.
