SERMONS OF SPURGEON IN FIVE DOUBLE VOLUMES
Charles H. Spurgeon

Five double volumes of Spurgeon Sermons in hardcover.

Tap into the wealth of life-changing words from the Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon. Featuring over 250 of Spurgeon's finest sermons, this comprehensive collection also includes indices of texts and subjects, so you can easily find what he had to say on a particular verse or topic.

The sermons of Charles Haddon Spurgeon were the pinnacle of preaching in mid-nineteenth-century England. They are still powerful and widely influential today. This five-volume set is a compilation of Spurgeon's best sermons, covering topics from Israel in Egypt and confession of sin to justification by grace and Paul's first prayer. Originally published in ten volumes in 1883, it is now a five volume set with two volumes in each book.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) served for 30 years at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. It is estimated that during his lifetime he spoke to 10 million people, and he became known as the 'Prince of Preachers.' His works fill over 60 volumes; and more than a century after his death, his sermons and devotional texts continue to challenge and touch Christians and non-Christians alike with their biblical grounding, eloquent text, and simple encouragement. Among his published books are Lectures to My Students (Hendrickson); The Treasury of David (Hendrickson), a devotional commentary on the Psalms; All of Grace, the first Christian pocket-paperback published in the United States; numerous volumes of topical sermon collections; and the best-selling Morning and Evening.

HEAVEN UPON EARTH: Jesus, The Best Friend in the Worst Times
James Janeway

James Janeway (1636-1674) was born in Hertfordshire, the son of a minister, at the end of 1636. He was educated at Christ's College, Oxford, and spent time as a private tutor in a home, as is true of many of the Puritans. He is listed as one of the ejected ministers of 1662. In 1672 his admirers built a large meeting house for him near London, where it is said that "he had a very numerous auditory, and a great reformation was wrought amongst many." But Janeway's popularity so enraged the Church of England that several times they threatened to shoot him, which was actually attempted on at least two occasions. On one of these occasions, Janeway was shot at, and the bullet pierced his hat, but did not harm his body. Soldiers destroyed the building in which he preached, but his congregation simply built another, larger one to accomodate all those who came to hear him preach.

"Heaven upon Earth is as precious as the finest gold. Its author, James Janeway, stirs the hearts of his readers, not to rest in a cold, speculative knowledge of God, but to seek that experimental knowledge of Him which enflames hearts, transforms lives, and affords unspeakable happiness throughout eternity. There is no friend in all the world Like Jesus Christ, our blessed Savior! So take this book, read it prayerfully, and discover for yourselves the intimacy of His blessed presence and company." -Malcolm H. Watts

As was true of many Puritan ministers, Janeway was afflicted with melancholy (depression), contracted tuberculosis, and died in his 38th year. The book for which he is most known is A Token for Children, in which he collected personal accounts of the conversions of a number of children in his parish, and published it. It became an effective evangelistic tool, and was the most widely read book in nurseries in England next to the Bible and Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. The New England preacher Cotton Mather regarded that book so highly that he wrote his own version of it and called it A Token for the Children of New England.

The cover image is the painting of The Great Fire of London from 1666 which took place at the very time Janeway was delivering these addresses. The complete sub-title of this Puritan masterpiece is: Jesus, the Best Friend in the Worst Times, being an earnest exhortation to get acquainted with God, as the only way to real good and blessedness.

"A MOUNTAIN OF SOUND THEOLOGY." - C.H. Spurgeon on The Works of Manton

"The renowned Thomas Manton (1620-1677), whose writings have long been prized by thousands, was known first and foremost as a great preacher. In a day when good preaching is sorely lacking, we need the reprint of his Complete Works, in which twenty of his twenty-two volumes are sermons. These sermons are the legacy of a powerful preacher devoted to the systematic teaching and application of God's Word. Whether he is expounding the Lord's Prayer, Psalm 119, Isaiah 53, James, or Jude, Manton presents us with the best that English Puritans had to offer in careful, solid, warmhearted exposition of the Scriptures." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, author of MEET THE PURITANS

"The publication of a complete and uniform edition of Manton's works is a great boon to the readers of English theology. Many of his best writings have been hitherto inaccessible to all who have not long purses and large libraries. The few who know him would gladly testify, I am sure, that Thomas Manton was one of the best authors of his day, and that his works richly deserve reprinting." -J.C. Ryle, from his Introduction called An Estimate of Manton (Found in Volume 2)

SOME MANTON QUOTES TO WHET YOUR APPETITE -

"One way to get comfort is to plead the promise of God in prayer, show Him His handwriting; God is tender of His Word."

"When we make self the end of prayer, it is not worship but self-seeking."

"Excess in meat and drink clouds the mind, chokes good affections, and provokes lust. Many a man digs his own grave with his teeth."

"If you yield to Satan in the least, he will carry you further and further, till he has left you under a stupefied or terrified conscience: stupefied, till thou hast lost all thy tenderness. A stone at the top of a hill, when it begins to roll down, ceases not till it comes to the bottom. Thou thinkest it is but yielding a little, and so by degrees are carried on, till thou hast sinned away all thy profession, and all principles of conscience, by the secret witchery of his temptations."

"What is the reason there is so much preaching and so little practice? For want of meditation. Constant thoughts are operative, and musing makes the fire burn. Green wood is not kindled by a flash or spark, but by constant blowing."

"First we practice sin, then defend it, then boast of it."

"Divisions in the church always breed atheism in the world."

"Men in general do not live as if they looked to die; and therefore do not die as if they looked to live."

"The more affected we are with our misery, the fitter for Christ's mercy."

"We know God but as men born blind know the fire: they know that there is such a thing as fire, for they feel it warm them, but what it is they know not. So, that there is a God we know, but what He is we know little, and indeed we can never search Him out to perfection; a finite creature can never fully comprehend that which is infinite."

"If a man would lead a happy life, let him but seek a sure object for his trust, and he shall be safe: "He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord." He hath laid up his confidence in God, therefore his heart is kept in an equal poise."

"We know God but as men born blind know the fire: they know that there is such a thing as fire, for they feel it warm them, but what it is they know not. So, that there is a God we know, but what He is we know little, and indeed we can never search Him out to perfection; a finite creature can never fully comprehend that which is infinite."

"The end of study is information, and the end of meditation is practice, or a work upon the affections. Study is like a winter sun that shines, but warms not: but meditation is like a blowing upon the fire, where we do not mind the blaze, but the heat. The end of study is to hoard up truth; but of meditation to lay it forth in conference or holy conversation."

"Faith is the fountain of prayer, and prayer should be nothing else but faith exercised."

“You would think it strange of two people who conversed every day for forty or fifty years, but all this while did not know one another; yet this is the case between us and our souls; we live a long time in this world but are strangers to ourselves.”

"Works before conversion cannot engage God, and works after conversion can not satisfy God - all the endeavor and labor of the creature will never procure it."

OF DOMESTICAL DUTIES: The Classic Puritan Treatise on the Christian Family
William Gouge

THIS IS THE COMPLETE, UNABRIDGED ONE VOLUME HARDCOVER EDITION.

"We are grateful for this new reprint of Gouge's classic on family living titled, Of Domesticall Duties (1622), last printed by Walter Johnson in facsimile in 1976. This penetrating analysis of the godly household for which Gouge became best known in his own day, is divided into eight sections dealing with the duties of family life. In the first part, Gouge explains the foundation of family duties, based on Ephesians 5:21- 6:9. The second part deals with the husband-wife relationship. The third focuses on the duties of wives, and the fourth with the duties of husbands. The fifth examines the duties of children, and the sixth, the duties of parents. The final parts examine the relationships and duties of servants and their masters.

While some of Gouge's material is outdated, his emphasis and advice are timeless on the whole. Usher claims that Gouge is finally being 'recognized as one of the subtlest of early modern writers to articulate the concept of companionable marriage' (his own was regarded as exemplary) and of considerate, rather than merely prescriptive, parenthood. His psychological insights into the nature of childhood and adolescence can be breathtaking in their modernity. He even touches on the question of child-abuse, a subject effectively taboo until the 1970s (Oxford DNB, 23:38).

Gouge is a skilled expositor who draws practical applications from the Epistles in instructing families how to walk in a manner worthy of their Lord. As a father of seven sons and six daughters, Gouge knew whereof he spoke. - Joel Beeke, taken from the Introduction

THE DOCTRINES OF ELECTION AND JUSTIFICATION
A.W. PINK

THE DOCTRINES OF ELECTION AND JUSTIFCATION

"Election is a foundational doctrine. In the past, many of the ablest teachers were accustomed to commence their systematic theology with a presentation of the attributes of God, and then a contemplation of His eternal decrees; and it is our studied conviction, after perusing the writings of many of our moderns, that the method followed by their predecessors cannot be improved upon. God existed before man, and His eternal purpose long antedated His works in time. "Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world" (Acts 15:18). The divine councils went before creation. As a builder draws his plans before he begins to build, so the great Architect predestinated everything before a single creature was called into existence. Nor has God kept this a secret locked in His own bosom; it has pleased Him to make known in His Word the everlasting counsels of His grace, His design in the same, and the grand end He has in view."

So begins A.W. Pink in his classic defense of the Doctrine of Election. The book is firmly based upon Pink's renowned exposition of Scripture and covers the following heads:

1. Introduction -

2. Its Source -

3. Its Grand Original

4. Its Verity -

5. Its Justice -

6. Its Nature

7. Its Design -

8. Its Manifestation -

9. Its Perception

10. Its Blessedness -

11. Its Opposition -

12. Its Publication

This is a great book for personal study of this weighty subject and it is a great book to give to someone who is wrestling with this grand but mysterious truth.

In addition to the excellent material on Election, Part Two of this book is called The Doctrine of Justification.

THE CHURCH OF CHRIST: A Treatise on the Nature, Powers, Ordinances, Discipline, and Government of the Christian Church
James Bannerman

"I do heartily encourage you to re-publish this unique work by James Bannerman on 'The Church of Christ.' Especially in our day of great ignorance about the subject of the authority of the Church, this volume is inestimable. It bears close study by elders, seminarians (and seminaries!), and by all others who sincerely desire to honor Christ, the only King and Head of the Church." - Pastor Bill Shishko

"James Bannerman's 'The Church of Christ' is the most extensive, standard, solid, Reformed treatment of the doctrine of the church that has ever been written. It is indisputably the classic in its field. Every minister and elder should own a copy, and church members would also be much better informed if they perused it carefully. How many church problems would be alleviated if churches used Bannerman as their primary textbook for their understanding of what the church is and for their modus operandi! --Joel R. Beeke

Volume One of this two volume work (full title: The Church of Christ: a treatise on the nature, powers, ordinances, discipline, and government of the Christian Church) deals with the nature and power of the Church, containing a lengthy explanation of the Church in its relation to the state, which is arguably one of the best treatments of this topic available. From there it deals with matters in regard to which Church power is exercised (i.e. in regard to doctrine, ordinances, the instrumentality and time of public worship; with a discussion of holy days, Independency, and confessions). Volume Two continues where Volume One left off, providing a lengthy section on the sacraments, covering the parties in whom the right to exercise church power is vested, examining crucial points concerning Christian liberty, comparing the Popish, Prelatic, Independent, Congregational and Presbyterian systems, etc. Nine appendices deal with a wide range of practical topics including union between churches, Church/State relations, ordination, and valuable notes on the literature related to this subject.

Iain Murray, a prominent scholar and co-founder of the Reformed publishing house, The Banner of Truth Trust, has said of The Church of Christ that "for those who wish to study the doctrine of the Church in its several aspects as it was held by the majority of the Reformers, Puritans, Covenanters and leaders of 'The Third Reformation,' it will prove an invaluable textbook."

This is considered the standard work on the doctrine of the Church.

THE GREAT MYSTERY OF THE COVENANT OF GRACE: The Difference between the Old and New Covenant Stated and Explained
Samuel Petto (1624-1711) with Preface by John Owen

The original work was published in the 1670s and has a Foreword by John Owen. Samuel Petto (c 1624-1711) was a dissenting minister in Sudbury, Suffolk. The list of 29 Scottish ministers recommending the book in 1820 include M'Crie of Edinburgh and Kidd of Aberdeen.

LAST PRINTED IN 1820 UNTIL TENTMAKER REPRINTED IT IN 2007

FIRST SOLID GROUND EDITION JUST ARRIVED IN JULY OF 2020

John Owen concludes his excellent Preface with these words:

"This worthy author has laboured, if I am not much mistaken, unto good success. And, as his design is to extricate things which seemed perplexed, to give light into the whole doctrine of the covenants, by declaring the proper order and method of things contained in them, with their respect one unto another; that the grace of God, in the Covenant of Grace, may be exalted, and his faithfulness, with his holiness, in the Covenant of Works, both in and by Jesus Christ, the end of the one, and the life of the other. So the reader will find, I hope, that satisfaction in these great and deep enquiries, which he will have occasion to return praise and thanks to God for."

Mark Jones concludes his excellent New Introduction with these words:

"The rewards are to be reaped from a careful study of this work. I would suggest keeping a Bible and pencil close by since Petto is constantly making reference to the Scriptures without giving the quotation of the passage cited. But more importantly, I would suggest keeping your heart firmly fixed upon the Lord Jesus Christ as he reveals to you, by his Spirit, THE GREAT MYSTERY OF THE COVENANT OF GRACE."

NEW INTRODUCTION by Mark Jones

INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW TESTAMENT
LOUIS BERKHOF

Introduction to the New Testament is designed for students and general readers, and directs its readers toward a greater appreciation for New Testament writings. This book includes an extended analysis of literature on the New Testament, including Berkhof’s own appraisal of the most influential 19th century New Testament scholars. Although Berkhof’s subject is the Bible, his pursuit is unapologetically theological: he aims to explain why the church reads and honors the New Testament as the Word of God, and to vindicate the claims of the canonical books against the criticism of modernist skeptics.

Louis Berkhof (1873–1957) was a Reformed theologian who taught at Calvin Theological Seminary and served as its president from 1931–1944. Berkhof’s writings presented Reformed thought in the tradition of John Calvin, Abraham Kuyper, and Herman Bavinck. He was known for his commitment to orthodoxy and his writings remain highly influential.

This is the first of a FOUR-volume set that compiles numerous Reformed confessions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries translated into English. Each confessional statement is preceded by a brief introduction containing necessary historical and bibliographical background. The confessions are arranged chronologically, with this first volume presenting thirty-three documents covering the years 1523-1552.

LIVING IN THE HOPE OF GLORY: A Dying Pastor's Farewells, A New Translation of Monod's Classic Farewell
Adolphe Monod, Translated by Constance K. Walker, Editor

A BRAND NEW SOLID GROUND EDITION HAS ARRIVED AND IT IS BEAUTIFUL!!

THE NEXT 2 PEOPLE WHO ORDER OUR MONOD SIX-PACK RECEIVE A FREE COPY OF THE BIOGRAPHY ENTITLED, 'ADOLPHE MONOD: The Voice of the Awakening' by Constance Walker (our Monod translator)

A nineteenth-century spiritual classic about living wholeheartedly for Christ, so as to have no regrets at life's end. Real, practical spiritual wisdom. Living in the Hope of Glory (originally titled Les Adieux, or Farewells) has been blessing readers for almost 150 years. It consists of a series of talks given by Adolphe Monod, a renowned pastor in the Reformed Church of France, as he suffered from terminal cancer. His family and friends met in his bedroom each Sunday during the last six months of his life to partake of the Lord's Supper and to hear his exhortations. But this is not a book about dying. It is a book about living consistently, powerfully and joyfully for the Lord, even in the midst of hard times. A week before his death Monod said, "I have a Savior! He has freely saved me through his shed blood. . . . All my righteous acts, all my works that have been praised, all my preaching . . . is in my eyes only filthy rags." A brief biography of Monod has been added to this edition to acquaint modern readers with this extraordinary man.

"Adolphe Monod was one of the greatest French preachers of the 19th century. Struck with terminal cancer, he presented from his bed a meditation on the last twenty-five Sundays of his life. This has been a French devotional classic since 1856. By virtue of Constance Walker's translation, 'though dead, yet he speaks' English." - Roger Nicole

"A monument to the grace of God through fellowship with Jesus Christ. Monod's dying testimony is instructing, enriching, and inspiring. Here, the suffering Christian will find an uplifting companion." - Rick Phillips

"It is astonishing that Monod's Les Adieux are not better known. This courageous French Reformed pastor was both passionate in his care for people and singular in his devotion to God." - William Edgar

Adolphe Monod (1802-1856) was a well known preacher and leader in the French Reformed Church. He was a pastor of various French congregations, including the prominent Reformed Church of Paris, and a professor at FRC Seminary, Montauban. His published sermons and essays have been widely circulated for over 150 years.

Constance K. Walker, editor and translator, is a Retired Senior Research Scientist at Duke University. She has published more than 50 articles in the field of physics, and has given a number of talks on science and faith.

FAMOUS REFORMERS OF THE REFORMED AND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHES
James I. Good

One of the promising tendencies in the sphere of present-day religious life, especially among the young people, is the growing interest in the study of the history of the Christian Church. "Bible and Mission Study Classes"; the combination of terms is itself highly significant; are being successfully organized and maintained by so many agencies directly and indirectly connected with the Church, that we may fairly cherish the hope that, not only among youthful converts, but also among older members in our households of faith, the zeal that is so marked and so admirable a feature of our religious activities may be increasingly tempered with that knowledge which is ever the prime requisite for the cultivation of the noblest types of character and the promotion of the best forms of service.

And if truth is never more potent than when it is seen incarnated in human life, surely the study of the great Reformers of the sixteenth century, the leaders in that wondrous anabasis that brought the Church out of her medieval tutelage into the spacious liberties of the modern era, will ever be an effective means for the deepening and enriching of our conception of what Christianity is and what it may become.

I therefore heartily welcome this "Mission Study Manual on the Reformation." The author's many publications in this particular field and his long experience as a professor of history in a theological seminary are a sufficient guarantee for the general excellence of his work. He has succeeded in sketching the careers and achievements of the Reformers with admirable simplicity, clearness and conciseness, and in maintaining a due proportion among the varied elements of the outline as a whole. The style is frequently brightened with picturesque and dramatic touches and with references to historic landmarks and memorials that reveal the sympathetic interest of the narrator as an eyewitness. After the approved fashion in works of this sort, each chapter is followed by a series of questions designed to bring out the salient features of the text for the purpose of a class review. As explained in the Preface, the book is adjusted to the specific purpose of stimulating popular interest in the study of the Reformation considered primarily, though not exclusively, as an evangelistic and missionary enterprise.

We congratulate the author on the completion of this Manual on the eve of the four hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, and express the hope that the book may be widely useful in spreading the knowledge of the Church of that period, and by this means furthering the kingdom of our Lord and Savior in our own day.

Frederick W. Loetscher. Princeton Theological Seminary, May 15, 1916.

FAMOUS MISSIONARIES OF THE REFORMED CHURCH
James I. Good

This book presents a fascinating survey of Reformed missions in 29 chapters. What impresses the reader especially is the worldwide sweep of Reformed mis¡sions, vividly described by the author.

Author's Preface:

In the great work of saving the world, the Reformed Church has had an honorable part and it ought to be inspiration to our German Reformed to learn what has already been done. The name Reformed is larger than any one nation or denomination. By famous missionaries of the Reformed Church we mean missionaries who under the Reformed name have gone forth and preached the gospel to the heathen. For the Reformed, whether Dutch, German, French, Swiss or American, are after all the same. The glory of one is the glory of all. Accordingly this subject is one of great interest to all our people. The Reformed missionaries have made the Reformed name known all over the world.

JESUS TEMPTED IN THE WILDERNESS: Sharing Christ's Victory
Adolphe Monod, with New Translation by Constance K. Walker, Editor

THE NEXT 2 PEOPLE WHO ORDER OUR MONOD SIX-PACK RECEIVE A FREE COPY OF THE BIOGRAPHY ENTITLED, 'ADOLPHE MONOD: The Voice of the Awakening' by Constance Walker (our Monod translator)

"Jesus Tempted in the Wilderness is Adophe Monod at his best. It is a masterpiece, bringing together profound comfort, realistic understanding, practical wisdom, and heavenly glory for every believer and, in a special way, for those who are preparing for or are working directly in some ministry. By the Spirit's grace, if you digest Monod's book slowly, seriously, and prayerfully, you will make great spiritual gain as you engage in holy warfare against your own temptations and lusts. You really must read this book." - Joel Beeke

"Here, in this spiritual gem, the greatest French preacher of the nineteenth century, Adolphe Monod, probes the implications of one of the most important of Christianity's mysteries: the terrible reality of the sinless Jesus being tempted in every area of human sin or vice. Firmly rooted in biblical orthodoxy, these three meditations reveal why Jesus was so tempted, how he emerged victorious, and what his victory means for us. These meditations are spiritual food and drink to all seeking to make progress in the Christian life." - Michael Haykin

"No thoughts could penetrate so powerfully as these words about Jesus' temptations and ours. Just when you thought Monod could go no deeper, he takes you into the most inner recesses of the soul, adding comfort and hope to his searing realism about our weaknesses. In Constance Walker's translation, the author's voice is heard clearly again, bringing these messages to us in a life-transforming way." - William Edgar, Westminster Theological Seminary

"I first encountered Adolphe Monod's, 'Jesus Tempted in the Wilderness' at a time in my life when I was battling intense discouragement. Because I was preparing for full-time Christian ministry, I was reluctant, and almost embarrassed to admit my struggle, yet Monod's book proved to be just what I needed. It spoke to the heart of my inner turmoil with all the eloquence of a Christian classic. Monod showed me that all followers of Christ will, like their Master, face temptation, especially during seasons of preparation for ministry. Yet we too can have the hope of victory and can look to Christ to show us 'the means through which we can triumph.' I was so encouraged to find that, ultimately, God used my season of discouragement to build up and strengthen my faith, just as Monod had confidently and carefully assured me that He would.

"More than just a discourse instructing future ministers in how to battle temptation, 'Jesus Tempted in the Wilderness' is a book on how to live the Christian life. Adolphe Monod's careful analysis of the temptation of Christ in Scripture points us to a vibrant faith that can not only survive, but actually thrive amidst the trials and travails that God allows to be placed in our path. It is precisely for such times that Monod offers a warm and gentle reassurance as a fellow sojourner: 'No, no, children of God, your Father has not forgotten you. He is treating you as he treated his only and beloved Son. It is the narrow way through which you must pass to arrive at a more solid faith.' " - A recent college graduate preparing for Christian ministry overseas

"I read the first meditation on temptation, and my heart was strangely touched. Two thoughts came to mind (actually, a host of thoughts, but these are the two most significant thoughts): 1) I never heard anything like that when I was in training for ministry, and 2) I am not sure my students are hearing anything like that today. The first, I cannot change and perhaps it is not yet too late that I have heard these words of encouragement. The second I can correct. There are important warnings and encouragements that every seminary student needs to hear. I finished the other two chapters and found them to be even better. I recognized myself at many points, and was convicted on several points. This is good stuff. I wish I had such a man to be a close friend. Please rush this to print. My appreciation for Monod has grown over the years." - R.J. Gore, ErskineTheological Seminary and U. S. Army Reserve chaplain (Colonel).

"Monod shows that Christ is our Savior because as 'the second Adam' He fulfilled in the desert what the first Adam failed to do in a garden. This book faithfully shows that in Christ we too can have victory over Satan and that it is God's word that is our weapon against the enemy of our souls." - Paul D. Kooistra, Coordinator, Mission to the World (Presbyterian Church in America) and former president, Covenant Theological Seminary

"Adolphe Monod's seminary years and the years immediately following them were times of great spiritual struggle. Perhaps that helps explain his special fondness and burden for young men preparing themselves for gospel ministry. As a seminary professor himself, during the middle part of his career, he took the unheard-of step of inviting students into his home, thus producing strong and enduring bonds of friendship between teacher and pupils.

During those years in academia, Adolphe Monod gave three messages on temptation in the seminary chapel. As was often his custom, he took his lessons primarily from the earthly life of his Savior, in this case from Jesus tempted in the wilderness. Material that was uniquely applicable to the seminary students was removed when the messages were preached in the Paris pulpit but was reinstated when the sermons were published. It is that published form that is presented here, in a new translation. As in my earlier translations of Monod's works, I have attempted to retain his gracious, romantic style while still making the text flow naturally to a modern reader.

We will all be tempted at some point - no, at many points - and we are most likely to face severe temptation when we begin a new work for the Lord. This was Monod's conviction as he addressed his mid-19th-century students, and it is the common experience of Christians today. Adolphe Monod's burden was to warn us all, pastors and laity alike, to be on our guard. But expecting the attacks is not enough. He also wanted us to be wise in knowing how to counter them and confident of gaining a firm victory - the victory that Jesus won for us. By carefully studying how Jesus faced the devil's temptations in the wilderness, every serious and fruitful Christian will be better equipped for his own spiritual battles." - Constance K. Walker, from the Translator's Preface

JOSEPH HALL'S CONTEMPLATIONS ON THE HISTORICAL PORTIONS OF THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT
Bishop Joseph Hall

Joseph Hall (1574-1656), one of the most venerable of the Puritans, was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and became rector at Halsted, where he wrote his renowned Contemplations. Afterwards he served as rector of Waltham. In 1618 he was delegated to the Synod of Dort. In 1627 he was appointed Bishop of Exeter and in 1641 Bishop of Norwich. He retired to Norfolk after facing severe persecution and died at the ripe age of eighty-one.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon: "Need I commend Bishop Hall's Contemplations to your affectionate attention? What wit! What sound sense! What concealed learning! His style is as pithy and witty as that of Thomas Fuller, and it has a sacred unction about it to which Fuller has no pretension. The work can be readily procured; but if its price were raised in proportion to its real value, it would become one of the most costly books extant."

George Whitefield: "Though weak, I often spent two hours in my evening retirements and prayed over my Greek Testament and Bishop Hall's most excellent Contemplations."

Richard Baxter: Recommends Hall's Contemplations for "for peace, and comfort, and increase of the love of God."

Thomas Fuller: "He was commonly called our English Seneca, for the pureness, plainness, and fulness of his style. Not unhappy at Controversies, more happy at Comments, very good in his Characters, better in his Sermons, best of all in his Meditations."

Peter Masters: "To read Hall is to read the narrative passages of the Bible through the eyes of a delightful saint and veteran Puritan pastor. It is to accompany the great man on a walk through the lanes and byways of all the events in the sacred record, and to hear his reflections, and the responses of his own heart. Seldom did anyone combine such easy prose with so many profound comments."

WHAT IS REFORMED THEOLOGY? Understanding the Basics
R C SPROUL

Have you ever wondered about "the five points"? What do they really mean?

'What Is Reformed Theology?' is not a textbook but rather an accessible introduction to beliefs that have been immensely influential in the evangelical church. In this insightful book, R. C. Sproul will walk you through the foundations of the Reformed doctrine and explain how the Reformed belief is centered on God, based on God's Word, and committed to faith in Jesus Christ. Sproul will explain the five points of Reformed theology and will make plain to you the reality of God's amazing grace.

Reviews

"His latest book weaves together several of his finest lessons in a compact, highly readable form that explains several difficult doctrines of the Reformed branch of Christianity. Dr. Spoul's logic is easy to follow, though it never talks down."--Amanda Killgore, Huntress Reviews

"Not only does Sproul have an amazingly broad but detailed grasp of Reformed theology, but he has also been gifted with the ability to explain complex theology in a way that is both interesting and understandable. That is no common gift. Accessible, biblical and educational, this is one of the best books I have read on the subject."--Tim Chalies, challies.com

"Who better to write a book on the basics of Reformed theology than its poster boy, R. C. Sproul. 'What Is Reformed Theology?' Is peppered throughout with excellent diagrams and illustrations which aid in getting Sproul's message across. There is no doubt that Sproul is a master teacher."--Gary Gilley, Southern View Chapel

STUDIES IN THE SCRIPTURES: Volumes One - Twelve (1922 - 1944)
A.W. PINK

THESE VOLUMES ARE CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE.

The books of Arthur W. Pink are becoming increasingly scarce. Publishers are fast dropping doctrinally sound books like Pink, in favor of feel-good, watered down stuff.

This the first complete printing of all of Pink's works. Get them while you can, for they are a treasure, and will certainly become valuable collector's items for lovers of God's Word.

Pink was a theosophist before his conversion, and became a much traveled Baptist preacher. Now, because of his regeneration by God the Spirit, He has become noted for his many Biblically sound books. And all of those books appeared as monthly installments in his magazine, then collected into bound volumes as Studies in the Scriptures, except The Sovereignty of God.

These 33 volumes of the magazine were issued yearly for 33 years. He also taught by mail some 100 or so students during this period, besides preaching at many Bible conferences. He was a devoted, intense student of the Bible, devoting a set number of hours per day in such study. Would-be visitors were met at the door and told by Mrs. Pink, Mr. Pink is in his study. He brooked no interruption. He had a photographic mind which carried prodigious information in it, to the point where he could not only often quote a passage, but tell you the page and the edition from which he was quoting it, though not having seen that page for years. Because of this ability it took a very brave man indeed to contradict something which Pink was teaching. For this man was capable of rolling out 50 or 60 pertinent Scripture quotations to prove his point.

Having read all the 10,000 pages of Pink, and having been taught by him for two years before his death, the Reviewer is certainly prejudiced in his favor. Nevertheless, it is our honest opinion that every one of the readers of these volumes will profit immensely from all these volumes.

First, because there are many excellent articles by outstanding authors, and from magazines and news media, that no longer can be found. This is particularly true in the first ten volumes or so, before Pink began to personally write all the articles.

Secondly, because there are hundreds of short articles by Pink, on various interesting subjects, which have not been included in any of his books. Among to be noticed are his first articles of each year, usually only a page or two, but full of meat. Some of these short articles have been printed in booklet form, but few have access to them any more. For example, The Fourfold Salvation, several booklets on the Sabbath, etc., each of which will enrich and inform the reader.

Thirdly, There are many short quotations appearing here and there full of pithy and memorable truths, for Pink was a very judicious reader who knew what would best stir the reader to further study on a subject, or on a pregnant verse of the Scriptures.

Fourthly, There have been some very injudicious editing of some of Pink's writings in the published books. Particularly to be noted is the removal of Pink's entire chapter on Reprobation from the Banner of Truth edition of The Sovereignty of God. Pink would have been justly furious about this ill-treatment because it puts him in a false position regarding what he considered a very important doctrine.

In short, you will gain considerable benefit from having ALL of Pink's writings in these 33 volumes, blessings which you would miss if you only would read his published books.

ALL THE FOLLOWING UNEDITED VOLUMES ARE INCLUDED IN THIS SET:

Exposition of Hebrews (he quotes the best of the best authors, including Owen, Gouge, Brown)

The Life of David (including in the SGP publication, I & II Samuel) - The Life of Elijah (much of 1 Kings) - The Life of Elisha (much of 2 Kings) - The Satisfaction of Christ (great on atonement) - The Gospel of John - Gleanings in Genesis - Gleanings in Exodus - Gleanings in Joshua - The Seven Sayings of the Saviour on the Cross - The Prayers of the Apostles -The Sermon on the Mount - The Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer - Exposition of 1 John 1 and 2, Arthur W. Pink - The Doctrine of Human Depravity - Exposition of I & II Samuel, Matthew Henry, John Gill, Arthur W. Pink (includes Life of David, Pink) - Practical Christianity - Pink Jewels - The Saint's Perseverance - Sanctification - The Saints' Perseverance - The Doctrine of Reconciliation - The Attributes of God - Studies in Saving Faith - The Divine Inspiration of the Scriptures - The Ten Commandments - Profiting From the Word - The Doctrine of Election - Understanding the Scriptures and dozens of others which I cannot recall at present.

If you were able to obtain all of these in separate volumes at today's prices they would cost you much more than $1,000.00. You will not want to miss this opportunity to own this precious set, and to have it to will it to your children.

This is a Best Set in Print

ARTHUR W. PINK (1890-1953) was a Baptist Preacher in England, Australia, and the United States. He is most famous for his book The Sovereignty of God. After its advent, he, assisted by his editor Mr. I. Herendeen, launched his yearly publication, Studies in the Scriptures in 1921. These continued until his death, totaling altogether 33 volumes of 288 pp. each. Most of Pink's books are taken from these yearly volumes (written monthly in 24 page format).

THE COMPLETE EXEGETICAL & DOCTRINAL WORKS OF WILLIAM PERKINS
William Perkins

The Works of William Perkins fills a major gap in Reformed and Puritan theology. Though Perkins is best known today for his writings on predestination, he also wrote prolifically on many subjects. His works filled over two thousand large pages of small print in three folio volumes and were reprinted several times in the decades after his death. However, his complete works have not been in print since the mid-seventeenth century. This modern typeset edition of the Works includes four volumes of Perkins's expositions of Scripture, three volumes of his doctrinal and polemical treatises, and three volumes of his practical writings.

THE EXEGETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM PERKINS (in Four Volumes)

VOLUME ONE: contains three of Perkins's treatises.

The First is 'A Digest or Harmony of the Books of the Old and New Testament', which offers a synopsis of the Bible that relates sacred history to the chronology of the world. Dating God's creation of the universe in 3967 BC, Perkins develops his overview of redemptive history that culminates in the final judgment.

The Second treatise is 'The Combat between Christ and the Devil Displayed.' Expounding Matthew 4:1-11, Perkins shows how Christ's temptation in the wilderness (1) set Jesus up to serve as the second Adam, overcoming Satan's temptation in a way the first Adam did not; (2) reveals how the devil assaults the church so that we might be better prepared to resist his temptations; and (3) equipped Christ to be a sympathetic high priest to those who are tempted.

The Third and most significant treatise is 'A Godly and Learned Exposition upon Christ's Sermon in the Mount'. "Hereof I have chosen to entreat," says Perkins, "because it is a most divine and learned sermon, and may not unfitly be called the 'Key to the whole Bible'; for here Christ opens the sum of the Old and New Testaments." The fact that Perkins saw the Sermon on the Mount as unlocking the meaning of Scripture in its entirety suggests that his understanding of what Christ declares in Matthew 5-7 was pivotal to the development of his theology and piety.

VOLUME TWO: Expositional Commentary on Galatians

This second volume contains Perkins's Commentary on Galatians. Perkins preached on Galatians each Lord's Day for over three years. Ralph Cudworth obtained Perkins's handwritten notes and edited them for publication. Because Perkins did not complete the commentary, Cudworth supplemented the manuscript with his own comments on chapter 6.

This commentary of Perkins and Cudworth on Galatians first appeared in print in 1604, two years after Perkins's death. Perkins's other writings had already begun to be gathered and published. When the three-volume edition of his collected works first appeared, Galatians occupied over 320 large folio pages in the second volume (1609). It continued to appear as a part of several editions of the Works through their final 1635 reprint. Evidently, interest in the commentary warranted its publication again as a separate volume in 1617.

Following the model taught in his treatise The Art of Prophesying, Perkins's pattern in commenting on Galatians is to explain the text, deduce a few points of doctrine from it, answer objections raised against the doctrine, and then give practical uses of what the passage teaches.

VOLUME THREE: A Cloud of Faithful Witnesses, Leading to the Heavenly Canaan (on Hebrews 11)

Over 460 pages of brilliant exposition on one glorious chapter of Holy Scripture. Perkins rivals the brilliant Thomas Manton in these messages on the most famous chapter in Hebrews. THIS BOOK BECAME AVAILABLE IN FEBRUARY 2017.

VOLUME FOUR: A Godly and Learned Exposition of Jude & Revelation 1 - 3

Perkins covers every verse and every word of The Epistle of Jude in 267 pages of brilliant and passionate exposition based upon sound exegesis. He then spend nearly 400 pages examining every inspired word of the first three chapters of Revelation. THIS BOOK HAS JUST BECOME AVAILABLE IN LATE MAY 2017.

VOLUME FIVE: A Body of Divinity, Consisting of His Exposition of the Apostle's Creed, the Lord's Prayer and The Foundation of Christian Religion Gathered into Six Principles

VOLUME SIX: Includes, THE GOLDEN CHAIN (includes the famous Perkins Chart), THE MANNER AND ORDER OF PREDESTINATION, TREATISE ON GOD'S FREE GRACE & MAN'S FREE WILL, FRUITFUL DIALOGUE CONCERNING THE E ND OF THE WORLD, AGAINST ALEXANDER DICKSON, ON MEMORY

THIS COMPLETES THE EXEGETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM PERKINS

The remaining volumes will be -

THE DOCTRINAL & POLEMICAL WORKS (in 3 volumes)

VOLUME SIX: Includes, THE GOLDEN CHAIN (includes the famous Perkins Chart), THE MANNER AND ORDER OF PREDESTINATION, TREATISE ON GOD'S FREE GRACE & MAN'S FREE WILL, FRUITFUL DIALOGUE CONCERNING THE E ND OF THE WORLD, AGAINST ALEXANDER DICKSON, ON MEMORY

THE PRACTICAL WORKS (in 3 volumes)

VOLUME SEVEN: This seventh volume includes three treatises that strike a helpful balance of emphases on theology, history, and practice.

A Reformed Catholic exists as a systematic, theological presentation of Perkins’s Reformed soteriology in contrast with the Church of Rome.

Perkins’s Problem of the Forged Catholicism is an exercise in historical theology, proving from the primary source documents of church history that the Roman Catholicism articulated at Trent is not supported by the first twelve hundred years of the church’s witness.

A Warning Against Idolatry handles worship practices—including liturgies, ceremonies, customs, and rites—concluding that all the externals of worship must be regulated by Scripture in the strictest sense.

Taken as a whole, Perkins’s polemical work against the Church of Rome draws a clear dividing line between Roman Catholicism and the Reformed tradition.

VOLUME EIGHT: This eighth volume includes five treatises meant to promote a good conscience before God.

A Discourse of Conscience establishes a framework for understanding the importance of conscience and how it functions.

The Whole Treatise of the Cases of Conscience is an extensive treatment of casuistry that treats man in his three principle conditions (by himself, in relation to God, and in relation to others).

A Treatise Tending unto a Declaration whether a Man Is in the Estate of Damnation or in the Estate of Grace distinguishes between true and false professors, demonstrates how Roman Catholicism falls short of assurance, and highlights the devil’s attempts to sully the consciences of God’s people.

A Case of Conscience gives full attention to the importance of personal assurance of salvation.

A Grain of Mustard Seed provides consolation to weak Christians by encouraging them to recognize and grow in gratitude for the grace they have.

There is much in the present volume to commend to the reader, but what clearly stands out is Perkins’s skill as a spiritual adviser.

VOLUME NINE: This ninth volume brings together nine of Perkins’s lesser known practical treatises and, by so doing, introduces the reader to important facets of his religion of the heart.

It opens with two works on what it means to look to Christ: A Declaration of the True Manner of Knowing Christ Crucified and The True Gain.

This is followed by A Faithful and Plain Exposition upon Zephaniah 2:1–2, which gives an earnest call to repentance, and The Nature and Practice of Repentance as well as The Combat of the Flesh and Spirit, which give systematic explanations of the doctrine of repentance.

A Treatise of Man’s Imaginations discusses man’s desperate need for renewal of mind.

A Direction for the Government of the Tongue According to God’s Word argues that one’s speech is the most significant change related to a renewed heart.

The volume finishes with A Discourse of the Damned Art of Witchcraft and A Resolution to the Country Man on Prognostication, which rebuke those who dally with occult practices.

Each treatise in this volume occupies an important place in Perkins’s experiential piety—what he himself described as “the more sincere profession of religion.”

VOLUME TEN: This tenth volume brings together seven treatises that demonstrate Perkins’s core conviction that the gospel touches all of life by bringing it under the rule of Scripture. Treatise on How to Live Well in All Estates opens the volume with a description of the reign of faith in Christians’ hearts so that they avoid sin and pursue the will of God in all they do. Treatise on Vocations explains how God calls Christians to live out their faith in whatever responsibilities they hold within society. Right Manner of Erecting and Ordering a Family applies the concept of vocation to life in the home. Calling of the Ministry applies vocation to the church, describing the duties and dignities of the ministers of Christ. Art of Prophesying equips those called to the ministry with the proper manner and method of preaching God’s Word. Christian Equity exhorts Christians to maintain justice and preserve peace, whether in families, church, or the greater commonwealth. Having finished with principles of living by faith, the volume ends with Treatise on Dying Well, which discusses the importance of faith at the end of life.

ENDORSEMENTS FROM MODERN MEN

"On the broad shoulders of William Perkins, epoch-making pioneer, stood the entire school of seventeenth-century Puritan pastors and divines, yet the Puritan reprint industry has steadily bypassed him. Now, however, he begins to reappear, admirably edited, and at last this yawning gap is being filled. Profound thanks to the publisher and heartfelt praise to God have become due." - J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

"William Perkins was a most remarkable Christian. In his relatively short life he was a great preacher, pastor, and theologian. His prolific writings were foundational to the whole English Puritan enterprise and a profound influence beyond his own time and borders. His works have become rare, and their republication must be a source of real joy and blessing to all serious Christians. Perkins is the first Puritan we should read." - W. Robert Godfrey, president, Westminster Seminary California

"The list of those influenced by the ministry of William Perkins reads like a veritable Who's Who of the Puritan Brotherhood and far beyond. This reprinting of his works, so long unobtainable except by a few, is therefore a publishing event of the first magnitude." - Sinclair B. Ferguson, professor of systematic theology, Redeemer Theological Seminary, Dallas

CONTEMPORARY DESCRIPTIONS OF PERKINS

"Perkins was justly esteemed by his contemporaries as a master in theology." - Charles H. Spurgeon

"In orderliness of method and vivid description, William Perkins takes the crown." - Gisbertus Voetius

"I gladly call to mind the time, when being young, I heard, worthy Master Perkins, so preach in a great assembly of students, that he instructed them soundly in the truth, stirred them up effectually to seek after godliness, made them fit for the kingdom of God; and by his own example shewing them, what things they should chiefly intend, that they might promote true religion, in the power of it, unto God's glory, and others' salvation." - William Ames

"Mr. Perkins's sermons were all law and all gospel. He was a rare instance of those opposite gifts meeting in so eminent a degree in the same preacher, even the vehemence and thunder of Boanerges, to awaken sinners to a sense of their sin and danger, and to drive them from destruction; and the persuasion and comfort of Barnabas, to pour the wine and oil of gospel consolation into their wounded spirits." - Benjamin Brook

PRACTICAL WORKS OF RICHARD BAXTER
Richard Baxter

PCHC - NEARLY 40% OFF THIS CLASSIC HARDCOVER VOLUME

"RICHARD BAXTER was the most outstanding pastor, evangelist and writer on practical and devotional themes that Puritanism produced." --"J. I. Packer"

An English Puritan, Baxter was an "exegete" of culture, a memorable preacher, and a prolific writer. He is known for his practical advice on applying Scripture to all areas of life and his emphasis on the "heart work" involved in doing everything to the glory of God--whether one is pastor, pilgrim, or parent.

The Puritans knew that they would not be able to deal with man's problems if they did not understand the source from which all these problems stem. Therefore, they sought what the Bible had to say about the heart in order to properly confront the difficulties that flow from it. This edition of the most complete abridgment of Baxter's 23-volume work is a treasury of carefully selected sermons and essays that combine the principles of communion with God and the specifics of obedience to God, including:

- The Saints' Everlasting Rest

- The Divine Life

- A Treatise of Conversion

- A Call to the Unconverted

- Now or Never

- Directions and Persuasions to a Sound Conversion

- Directions for Weak Distempered Christians

- The Character of a Sound, Confirmed Christian

- The Mischiefs of Self-Ignorance and the Benefits of Self-Acquaintance

- Dying Thoughts

Baxter's work is a welcome and helpful addition to any personal or pastoral library.

Reformed Dogmatics, Volume 1 -Prolegomena
Herman Bavinck; John Bolt, ed.; John Vriend, trans

Theologians have long appreciated Herman Bavinck's four-volume masterpiece, Gereformeerde Dogmatiek, published in 1895-99, for its comprehensive treatment of dogmatic theology. Unfortunately, this magnum opus from the great Reformed theologian has only been available in Dutch, and therefore has been inaccessible to most readers. Now, thanks to the Dutch Reformed Translation Society and the work of translator John Vriend and editor John Bolt, the first volume of Bavinck's magisterial Reformed Dogmatics is available in English for the first time. Bolt's tireless work updating the documentation augments this significant work. 704 page hardcover (Vol. 3 in 2005, Vol. 4 in 2006)

THE GOLDEN BOOKLET OF THE TRUE CHRISTIAN LIFE
John Calvin

Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life has inspired readers around the world for more than four centuries.

This classic devotional will guide you on how to apply the Christian faith in a balanced way to mind, heart, and hand. Originally part of John Calvin's Institutes, it covers themes such as obedience, self-denial, the significance of the cross, and how believers should live their lives today.

Rather than focusing on contemplative other-worldliness, the Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life stresses the importance of a devotedly active Christian life. In style and spirit, it is much like Augustine's Confessions, Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, or Thomas a Kempis's Imitation of Christ. Its intense practicality, however, sets it apart, making it easily accessible for anyone seeking to carry out Christian values in everyday life.

The translator, Henry J. Van Andel, competently preserved the colorful language and direct style of which John Calvin was a recognized master.

CALVINISM IN HISTORY: A Political, Moral & Evangelizing Force
Nathaniel S. McFetridge

This little gem is filled with myriads of powerful testimonies concerning the Political, Moral and Evengelizing Force of the Doctrines of Grace.

"I do not know of any other book that sets forth so effectively and yet in such a brief form the real nature of Calvinism and the effect that it has had in history." Loraine Boettner

"This is a readable and happy account of Calvinism in history." Rousas Rushdoony

"This book sure-footedly guides us over the terrain of Calvinism's broadsweeping political and moral influence, concluding that Calvinism's evangelistic power results from the doctrines of grace, particularly justification by faith alone." Joel Beeke

It is a privilege for Solid Ground to bring this book back into print with the sincere desire that it will travel throughout the world and bear witness to the truth of the great doctrines of Augustine and Calvin.

THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD: Classic Volume
A.W. PINK

The timeless appeal of this classic book, written by a preacher with a worldwide ministry during the first half of the twentieth century, demonstrates the deep hunger for a saving knowledge of God present in each generation. Arthur Pink sought to give readers not just a theoretical knowledge of God but pointed them toward a personal relationship of yielding to him and living according to his biblical precepts. Pink's book explores attributes such as God's decrees, foreknowledge, sovereignty, holiness, grace, and mercy, among many others, all packaged in a style especially useful for pastors, teachers, and Bible students. Our God who is above all names cannot be found through human searching alone, Pink teaches, but can be known only as he is revealed by the Holy Spirit through his living Word.

THE TRUTH, INSPIRATION, AND AUTHORITY OF SCRIPTURE
ARCHIBALD ALEXANDER

This book, originally published in 1836 as Evidences of the Authenticity, Inspiration, and Canonical Authority of Holy Scripture, contains Archibald Alexander’s defense of God’s role in the inspiration of Scripture. Alexander devotes time to defending the truth of Scripture, the veracity of miracles, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the credibility of the Gospels, firmly supporting the view that the revelation of God in the Bible is neither improbable nor unreasonable.

AN UNDIVIDED LOVE: Loving and Living for Christ
Adolphe Monod, Translated and Edited by Constance K. Walker

THE NEXT 2 PEOPLE WHO ORDER OUR MONOD SIX-PACK RECEIVE A FREE COPY OF THE BIOGRAPHY ENTITLED, 'ADOLPHE MONOD: The Voice of the Awakening' by Constance Walker (our Monod translator)

"If Charles Spurgeon was the prince of preachers in Victorian England, Adolphe Monod was the noblest preacher of the French revivals. With unequalled passion and clarity he brings the unassuming listener not merely to the foot of the cross, but to Jesus himself, as he is clothed in the gospel. Even if you are expecting to be moved by these messages you will be surprised and deeply comforted by their simple and compelling power." - William Edgar, Professor, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA

"English-speaking Evangelicals are, as a general rule, quite ignorant of the spiritual riches found in other Evangelical cultures. That of the French Calvinist tradition, coming down from Calvin and men like Pierre Viret, is a good case in point. The most vibrant representative of this tradition in the nineteenth century has to be Adolphe Monod. His sermons are food for the soul, but he is hardly known by contemporary North American Evangelicals. May this excellent sampling of his preaching, marked by rich piety and doctrinal clarity, help make his labours for the Lord Christ far better known." - Michael Haykin, Professor, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

This book is divided into three parts. Part one is largely relational. It speaks of finding our center, purpose and contentment in our relationship with a holy and loving God; it helps us see the fulfillment of that relationship as grounded in eternity, and then points to the joy of helping others to share in our fulfillment.

Part two of the book is more theological (but not at all in a dry, academic sense). These sermons shine fresh light on the nature of the God whom we love and serve: his love displayed on the cross, his power over death, his holiness, and his faithfulness, even in his threats.

Finally part three is more practical. It encourages us to seek and embrace God's plan for our lives, and to appreciate the joy inherent in the Christian life, even in its more challenging aspects, so that others will want to embrace it as well.

Part I. COME AND DRINK

1. Give Me Your Heart, Paris, 1850

2. Are You Thirsty?, Paris, 1849

Part II. BEHOLD YOUR GOD

3. God is Love, Montauban, 1843

5. Too Late! God Faithful in his Threats, Paris, 1854

HERE I STAND: A Life of Martin Luther
Roland Bainton

"I cannot.. I will not... recant! Here I stand." This authoritative and inspiring story paints a vivid portrait of the crusader who spearheaded the Reformation. Considered one of the most readable biographies of Martin Luther, this volume is an illustrated look at the German religious reformer and his influence on Western civilization.

Martin Luther entered a monastery as a youth and as a man shattered the structure of the medieval church. Luther spoke out against the corrupt religious practices that then existed. His demand that the authority for doctrine and practice be Scriptures, rather than Popes or Councils, echoed around the world and ignited the Great Reformation. Accused of heresy and threatened with excommunication and death, Luther maintained his bold stand and refused to recant. In his crusade to eliminate religious abuses, he did more than any other man to establish the Protestant faith. With sound historical scholarship and penetrating insight, Roland Bainton examines Luther's widespread influence. He re-creates the spiritual setting of the sixteenth century, showing Luther's place within it and influence upon it. Richly illustrated with more than 100 woodcuts and engravings from Luther's own time, Here I Stand dramatically brings to life Martin Luther, the great reformer.

Bainton published Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther in 1950. As of 2008, it is still in print. Kenneth Scott Latourette, in the chapter notes for "Luther and the Rise and Spread of Lutheranism" in his History of Christianity, lauds Bainton's biography of Luther as "A superb combination of accurate scholarship based upon a thorough knowledge of the sources and secondary works with insight, vivid, readable literary style, and reproductions of contemporary illustrations. It also contains so valuable a bibliography as to render needless an extended one in this chapter." In his chapter on Luther's writings in Invitation to the Classics, Mark A. Noll singles out BaintonÆs biography:

"Of the many superlative treatments, a half-century old study by Roland Bainton, Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther, has justly won a reputation as a classic work on a classic subject."

THE REFORMED DOCTRINE OF THE ATONEMENT
Loraine Boettner

"The two great objectives to be accomplished by Jesus Christ in His mission to this world were, first, the removal of the curse under which mankind labored as a result of the disobedience and fall, and second, the restoration of men to the image and fellowship of God. Both of these were essential to salvation. The work of Christ in reconciling God and men we call the Atonement; and the doctrine, we believe, lies at the very heart of the Christian system.

In the nature of the case we are altogether dependent on Scripture for our knowledge concerning this doctrine and can know only what God has seen fit to reveal concerning it. Human philosophy and speculation can contribute practically nothing toward its solution, and should be held in abeyance. Our present purpose is to give a systematized account of what the Scriptures teach concerning it, and to show that this fits in perfectly with the longings and aspirations of an enlightened spiritual nature." - Loraine Boettner

"Nothing reaches deeper into the heart of Evangelical Christianity than the truth that æChrist died for our sinsÆ (1 Cor. 15:3). Nothing is more worthy of our study, than to know æChrist and him crucifiedÆ (1 Cor. 2:2). Though seven decades have passed since the original publication of Loraine Boettner's book on the atonement, it speaks with remarkable freshness today because it speaks the imperishable Word of God. Readers will find Boettner's defense of the atonement against Modernism strikingly relevant to contemporary debates as theological Liberalism again rears its head in the church." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

LORAINE BOETTNER (1901-1990) was born on a farm in Linden, Missouri. He was a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary (Th.B., 1928; Th.M., 1929), where he studied Systematic Theology under Dr. C. W. Hodge. Previously he had graduated from Tarkio College, Missouri, and had taken a short course in Agriculture at the University of Missouri.

He taught Bible for eight years in Pikeville College, Kentucky. While there he married in 1932. In 1933 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity, and in 1957 the degree of Doctor of Literature. He was a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church of USA. In 1937 he began working at the Library of Congress and the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

Some of his books include: The Reformed Doctrine of Predestination, Roman Catholicism, Studies In Theology, Immortality, The Millennium and A Harmony of the Gospels.

This volume was first published in 1941 under the simple title THE ATONEMENT.

The titles of each chapter are as follows:

1 - The Atonement

2 - The Significance of Christ's Death

3 - The Satisfaction View of the Atonement

4 - The Active and Passive Obedience of Christ

ESSAYS ON RELIGION, SCIENCE & SOCIETY
Herman Bavinck

ESSAYS ON RELIGION, SCIENCE & SOCIETY by Herman Bavinck

Herman Bavinck, the premier theologian of the Kuyper-inspired, neo-Calvinistic revival in the late-nineteenth-century Netherlands, is an important voice in the development of Protestant theology. Essays on Religion, Science, and Society is the capstone of his distinguished career. These seminal essays offer an outworking of Bavinck's systematic theology as presented in his Reformed Dogmatics and engage enduring issues from a biblical and theological perspective. The work presents his mature reflections on issues relating to ethics, education, politics, psychology, natural science and evolution, aesthetics, and philosophy of religion. This collection--Bavinck's most significant remaining untranslated work--is now available in English for the first time. Pastors, students, and scholars of Reformed theology will value this work.

Index

Although all of these essays are more an 100 years old, it is quite amazing how applicable they are for today. Even those that (due to their subject matter) prove to be more dated, are quite significant in helping to understand history and where the world we live in today came from and how we can live in this world as Christians.

Endorsements

"I have long admired Bavinck as a major systematic theologian, but in these essays I discovered a Bavinck I never knew. He moves easily--and brilliantly--through adolescent psychology, conceptions of the unconscious, Islam, social contract theory, evolutionary thought, philology, and aesthetics, to name only a few of a broad set of topics. Here an amazing nineteenth-century Calvinist mind addresses with much wisdom a twenty-first-century intellectual agenda!"--Richard J. Mouw, president and professor of Christian philosophy, Fuller Theological Seminary

"To read [these essays] is to be forcefully reminded that Bavinck was not merely a theologian in the narrow sense, but a broad Christian thinker active in the academy, the church, and the state. . . . The general strength of the book is simply Bavinck's example. Here is the record of a keen mind, an irenic spirit, and a methodical laborer, grounded in the Scriptures and applying it to a host of questions."--Cliff L. Blair, New Horizons

AN EXPOSITION OF THE PROPHECY OF HOSEA
Jeremiah Burroughs

OUT OF PRINT AT THIS TIME

"Jeremiah Burroughs's Exposition of the Prophecy of Hosea is a fine and mammoth treatment of an important prophet. Spurgeon called this work 'masterly,' noting that it is 'a vast treasure-house of experimental exposition.' No work on Hosea has since superseded this commentary. Reading Burroughs is always a treat for the spiritually-minded. His writings are expositionally sound and reliable, sane and usable, warm and devotional. We pray that God will use this reprint as a valuable tool, especially for ministers and Bible teachers as they prepare messages on this graphic prophet." - Joel R. Beeke, from the biographical preface

"Jeremiah Burroughs (c.1600-1646), one of the dissenting members of the Westminster Assembly and author of over 20 volumes, including The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment and Gospel Worship, wrote a 4-volume commentary on Hosea (1643-51), which has long been regarded as a classic of both profound learning and pastoral advice. No student of Hosea can claim to have mastered the prophet without consulting Burroughs. An essential commentary." - Derek W. H. Thomas, Reformed Theological Seminary

"Jeremiah Burroughs's Hosea combines exegetical rigor, theological astuteness, and experimental refreshment. In the great tradition of Puritan biblical exposition, Burroughs opens the inspired text, and has the text address the human heart. He mines the text for its meaning and doctrine, and translates his insights into wonderful applications. With great skill and ease, Burroughs sounds out Hosea's message - its threats of judgment, its calls to repentance, its promises of mercy, and its prophecies of Christ. Still today, Burroughs makes them resonate clearly and compellingly." - Gerald M. Bilkes, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

THE NATIONAL PREACHER:
Revival Sermons from the Second Great Awakening
Volumes One and Two (June 1826 - May 1828)
Edited by Austin Dickinson

This is a marvelous volume that contains some of the best sermons preached during a period of wide-spread revival in the young country of America. Rev. Austin Dickinson was burdened to gather sermons from able evangelical ministers "prepared in some of their happiest moments of thought and feeling, which, if concentrated in a Work of this kind, might reflect light on the desolate places, as well as the churches of our land."

"This is certainly a valuable collection of sermons preached before the end of the Second Great Awakening period and by eminent men. Some of the names are now unknown to us, others have come down through history as preachers who were instruments in great blessing. This now rare volume cannot but quicken desire for awakening in our own day and it shows very clearly the kind of truths and the nature of the preaching that was so used of God. In a day of many books this is one that has to stand out in importance."

- Iain H.Murray

"The National Preacher provides great preaching from great preachers on a great diversity of timeless subjects. Every minister should read and study this treasure trove of sermons prayerfully." - Joel R. Beeke

The response was truly extraordinary, and commencing in June 1826, these sermons sold into the hundreds of thousands and traveled to the ends of the earth. Less than ten years later the following testimony came from the Sandwich Islands:

"The National Preacher deserves the confidence of the world. May this high commissioned messenger of Christ be received with thankfulness and joy by tens of millions of our race. May the Divine Author of all valuable gifts in the church copiously shed down the graces of his Spirit upon the contributors to this evangelical publication, that their writings may be worthy of the enlightened age in which we live, and such as hundreds of millions may be edified to read, when the pens of the writers are exchanged for harps of gold."

Strong support poured in from Princeton Theological Seminary, Yale College, the President and Professors at Amherst College, and Asahel Nettleton, who said , "I have read, as I have had opportunity, the Numbers of the National Preacher with great satisfaction. I regard it as a work peculiarly desirable to Clergymen, and, at the same time, as worthy of a place in every intelligent family."
