(1) BEHOLD YOUR GOD: Rethinking God Biblically & (2) BEHOLD YOUR GOD: The Weight of Majesty
John Snyder with Paul Washer, Richard Owen Roberts, Conrad Mbewe and More

(1) BEHOLD YOUR GOD: Rethinking God Biblically

'Behold Your God: Rethinking God Biblically' is a 12-week multimedia Bible study for churches, small groups, families, or individuals containing 12 sessions that are reinforced by a 12-week daily workbook. Each week's lesson is preceded by a brief historical profile of a notable man or woman of God such as George Muller, A. W. Tozer, Samuel Rutherford, Charles Spurgeon, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Amy Carmichael, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, George Whitefield, Daniel Rowland and Jonathan Edwards.

These introductions were filmed on location in England, Scotland, Wales, Chicago, and up the east coast of New England at key historical sites associated with the lives of the men and women we are considering.

The heart of each DVD is a 30-minute lesson on one aspect of the Christian life and how it is affected by a biblical rethinking of God's character. The teaching sessions are led by Dr. John Snyder, pastor of Christ Church in New Albany, Mississippi.

A NOTE FROM DR. JOHN SNYDER:

"When the Behold Your God: Rethinking God Biblically study was released in 2013, we felt (as did many others) that the evangelical churches needed to face some hard questions. Many had carefully traced the symptoms of an internal decay within evangelicalism, a decay that was occurring even while outwardly there appeared to be continued successes. Behold Your God: Rethinking God Biblically was written with the desire to help stir God's people by pointing them back to the fountainhead—God Himself. Precious time was being wasted as Western evangelicals attempted to fix the external problems. It was our belief that the surest hope of a cure was to deal with the root issue, and that root issue appeared to be an inadequate understanding of our own God.

The response to that study, by God's grace, has been far greater than we could have imagined. During the last five years the emails, letters, and personal testimonies of those who have benefitted from the study have been gratefully received. It is always humbling to see God use our efforts as a part of something far greater than anything we could accomplish. Within these communications there has been a recurrent question: where do I go to find more resources on the character of God? Thankfully, there are many fine treatments of God's perfections. Often, however, they are either very large or very complex books. In response to this question, we have put together this new study dealing primarily with the attributes of God rather than ways the evangelical church often lives below His self-revelation. In a sense, The Weight of Majesty is a continuation of the theme we explored in week one of Rethinking God Biblically—that God Himself is the great attraction of the Christian life. By His help we hope to continue going deeper into the themes that were introduced in the original study through several forthcoming installments in the Behold Your God series.

Nothing is so satisfying for the true Christian as an ever-increasing and experiential knowledge of our God. This cannot be gained safely without diligently searching the Bible. Therefore, the real purpose of this book is to guide you back into those passages which contain some of the most significant descriptions of God. Avoid the temptation to merely get through the exercises without wrestling honestly with these matters. Sit long at the feet our Heavenly Father and ask Him to tell you about Himself. We know it is too easy to check a box, fill in the blank with the correct word, and move on unaffected. Don't settle for undigested concepts or merely emotional responses to passages. Plead with God to help you adjust everything in life to fit what you are learning about Him. Bring both your mind and heart together, and bow before God in real worship as you study each day, until like Job you feel compelled to say, 'I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear; but now my eye sees You!' You will not be disappointed with the Living God.

May this study be a lifelong friend as we labor to live unto God.

ENDORSEMENTS:

“This is a book primarily about Jesus and secondarily about prayer. That is reflected in the subtitle Listening to and Learning from Our Savior. Jones guides us in listening to the prayers of Jesus for what they tell us about Jesus, and then what they tell us about prayer. Think of it as a Christology viewed through the lens of Jesus’s prayers. Jones’s purpose is much deeper than just drawing principles of prayer from the prayers of Jesus; he takes us into a deeper understanding of who Jesus is and what he has done for us, and then applies that to the prayer life of the believer in Christ.” - Donald S. Whitney, Associate Dean and Professor of Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life and Praying the Bible

“Mark Jones has done it again. He distills the beauty, majesty, and mystery of Jesus into accessible and transformative food for the soul. No other writer today says so much about Christ in such profound, readable, provocative, and rich ways. The humanity, vulnerability, authority, and glory of our Lord jump out of every page. Read this book.” - Dan MacDonald, Senior Pastor, Grace Toronto Church

“What a wonderful idea—to access the person and work of our Savior through his prayers. The result is a beautiful and soul-satisfying book that will not only teach you more about Jesus but also teach you how to pray. If your soul is dry and your prayers are dead, here is living water to revive and refresh you.” -David Murray, Professor of Old Testament and Practical Theology, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

“Christians with an appetite for knowing Jesus will find a feast in The Prayers of Jesus. Mark Jones serves up the finest in devotional food, teaching us how to come to the Father by observing the prayer life of his Son. I heartily commend not only the bite-size chapters but also Jones’s meaty historical and theological introduction.” - Chad Van Dixhoorn, Professor of Church History, Westminster Theological Seminary

NONE GREATER: The Undomesticated Attributes of God
MATTHEW BARRETT

"Matthew Barrett leads us to marvel at both how much and how little we know of God."--Tim Challies, blogger at challies.com; author of Visual Theology

For too long, Christians have domesticated God, bringing him down to our level as if he is a God who can be tamed. But he is a God who is high and lifted up, the Creator rather than the creature, someone than whom none greater can be conceived. If God is the most perfect, supreme being, infinite and incomprehensible, then certain perfect-making attributes must be true of him. Perfections like aseity, simplicity, immutability, impassibility, and eternity shield God from being crippled by creaturely limitations. At the same time, this all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-wise God accommodates himself, exhibiting perfect holiness, mercy, and love as he makes known who he is and how he will save us.

The attributes of God show us exactly why God is worthy of worship: there is none like him. Join Matthew Barrett as he rediscovers these divine perfections and finds himself surprised by the God he thought he knew.

"Matthew Barrett's excellent book lays out in clear, accessible terms what the biblical, historic, ecumenical doctrine of God is, why it matters, and why its abandonment by great swathes of the Protestant world is something that needs correction."--Carl R. Trueman, professor, Grove City College; author of Grace Alone

"Perhaps not since R. C. Sproul has there been a treatment of such deep theology with such careful devotion and accessibility. Read this book. And stagger."--Jared Wilson, director of content strategy, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; managing editor, For the Church; author of The Gospel-Driven Church

"The knowledge of God is the soil in which Christian piety flourishes. I am grateful for the publication of None Greater and pray it will be a source of growth in godliness among those captivated by its vision of God's supremacy."--Scott Swain, president and James Woodrow Hassell Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary-Orlando; author of Reformed Catholicity

Matthew Barrett is associate professor of Christian theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the author of God's Word Alone and Reformation Theology. He is also the executive editor of Credo magazine and the host of the Credo podcast.

GOD IS: A Devotional Guide to the Attributes of God
MARK JONES

“This is Mark Jones at his best. In twenty-seven concise chapters, God Is invites, equips, edifies, comforts, and challenges God’s people to know God better and love him more.” —Rosaria Butterfield, Former Professor of English, Syracuse University; author, The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert

God has revealed many things about himself in his Word. But God’s manifold attributes shine most clearly in his Son, Jesus Christ, who came to reveal his Father. Through Christ’s saving work on the cross, we are able to know and worship God rightly.

This book aims to help us study and understand the attributes of God so that we delight in and love him with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind. Each chapter explains one attribute, shows how it is most clearly manifested in Christ, and provides practical application for the Christian life.

FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD: A Path to Deeper Fellowship with the Father, Son & Holy Spirit
MIKE McKINLEY

Based on John Owen’s Classic Text Communion with God, This Helpful Resource Answers the Question, “What Does It Mean to Be Friends with Jesus?”

In John 15, Jesus says, “I have called you friends.” But what does it mean to be friends with Jesus? In the early 1650s, theologian John Owen attempted to answer this question through a series of sermons, eventually compiled as Communion with God. The book is full of truths about having fellowship with God, but Owen’s work is often a struggle for modern readers to understand.

In Friendship with God, pastor Mike McKinley takes a key idea or insight from Communion with God and clarifies it for readers in each chapter, giving them practical guidance for how to develop fellowship with God—such as obeying the Father’s commands, acknowledgment of sin, and prayer. Perfect for new Christians or for those without a church background, this accessible resource offers an introduction to the God who “wants you to know him and be known by him.”

**Accessible: Written for a broad contemporary audience, perfect for new Christians or for those without a church background

**Based on John Owen’s Classic Text Communion with God: Takes Owen’s work and explains the key themes to a modern audience

**Examines Some Key Attributes of God: Including his Trinitarian nature, love, and grace

ENDORSEMENTS

“Spectacular and exhilarating, but also inaccessible—John Owen can be like that. His view of the triune God is glorious, yet reading Owen is like climbing a mountain. But just as you can take a helicopter tour to see the marvels of a mountain range, so Mike McKinley lifts us up into Owen’s thoughts with easy-to-understand explanations to see the wonders of knowing the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This book will greatly help many fellowship more fully with God whose friendship, in Christ, is more than a brother’s. Highly recommended for all believers yearning to have a closer and richer life with each of the persons of the Trinity!” -Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

“Probably no book has influenced my theological instincts more than John Owen’s Communion with God, but Owen is not always easy to read. Therefore, this small volume by Mike McKinley is a welcome gift. He ably conveys in an accessible and friendly way many of Owen’s key ideas from that book, inviting readers to consider the kindness of the God who desires to be in communion with us.” -Kelly M. Kapic, Professor of Theological Studies, Covenant College

“While thoughtful Christians will know that the doctrine of the Trinity is biblically true, fewer see it as the fountain of their entire Christian spirituality. But Mike McKinley ably shows how the triune God invites the believer into a deeply nuanced threefold relationship—a friendship even—with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In McKinley’s capable hands, John Owen’s original (dense!) writing on these themes opens up and breathes, inviting every reader into the Trinitarian depths.” -Brian Kay, Pastor of Christian Formation, Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church, Walnut Creek, California; author, Trinitarian Spirituality: John Owen and the Doctrine of God in Western Devotion

“John Owen’s Communion with God proves that this titan of English theology was also a sensitive pastor and guide who wanted his listeners and readers to love the triune God fervently. Yet Owen’s style is complex and can be difficult for modern readers. Enter Mike McKinley, himself a seasoned pastor, who in this short book synthesizes much of the gist of Owen’s treatise. Full of choice quotes from Owen, trenchant observations, and provocative questions, McKinley’s overview will spur you on to communion, and indeed fellowship and friendship, with God!” -Shawn D. Wright, Professor of Church History, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; coeditor, The Complete Works of John Owen

FEED MY LAMBS: Lectures to Children on Matters of Life and Death
John Todd

"This little work, after having passed through fifteen editions in this country (USA), and we know not how many in England, after having been translated into French, German, Greek, and many more languages, printed in raised letters for the blind, and last of all, having been adopted as a school-book for the liberated slaves at Sierra Leone, is now sent forth by the publishers in a new dress, with the addition of two new Lectures." - Author's Preface

John Todd (1800-1873) was a graduate of Yale College and Andover Theological Seminary. His theology was molded by the writings of Jonathan Edwards, and he had the privilege of pastoring Edwards Memorial Church in Northampton, MA.

William G. Blaikie said, "In preaching to the young, Dr. Todd has attained the first rank in this department of work. The American mind has such a proclivity to sharp, terse forms of expression, clever analogies and illustrations, keen analysis of feelings, vivid description and warm coloring, that we do not wonder that it should excel in addresses to which such qualities contribute so largely."

These lectures are the fruit of a ministry directed with conviction to the consciences of the young. From the opening page of these lectures the reader is addressed in such a personal way that he cannot but hear the words for himself.

Not only should these be read by and to children, but every pastor and Sunday School teacher should read it and learn the delicate art of speaking to children. This was a best seller in the middle of the 19th century, but it has been buried for more than 125 years. It is high time Todd was able to speak again for the cause of God and truth.

TRUTH MADE SIMPLE: The Attributes of God Explained for Children
John Todd

In this remarkable book JOHN TODD (1800-1873) begins what he hoped to be a Systematic Theology for Children. He begins with Theology Proper, the Doctrine of God, and he covers the following:

IS THERE ANY GOD?

GOD IS A SPIRIT

GOD ETERNAL

GOD IS EVERY WHERE

GOD ALL-WISE

GOD KNOWS EVERY THING

GOD'S POWER

TRUTH OF GOD

GOD DOES AS HE PLEASES

GOD IS HOLY

GOD IS GOOD

"Truth Made Simple is a friendly but potent deviation from the fluff that permeates the childrens' book market today. Mr. Todd came up in a generation that had more confidence in childrens' ability to assimilate deep spiritual truth. He provides a welcome addition to the library of any parent who is seriously discipling his child in the Scripture. The Address to Mothers alone is worth the price of the book! Its focus on eternity will encourage us to approach our daily discipling of our children with reverence and zeal." - Selah Helms, author or "Small Talks on Big Questions"

Richard Newton, who was called by Spurgeon "The Prince of Preachers to Children", said the following about John Todd: "When I was a young man I happened to read a volume of "Lectures for Children" which had been written and published by Dr. John Todd. I felt then as if I had found a gold mine. That volume lasted me all through college, and taught me how to talk to children."

THE DOCTRINES OF ELECTION AND JUSTIFICATION
A.W. PINK

THE DOCTRINES OF ELECTION AND JUSTIFCATION

"Election is a foundational doctrine. In the past, many of the ablest teachers were accustomed to commence their systematic theology with a presentation of the attributes of God, and then a contemplation of His eternal decrees; and it is our studied conviction, after perusing the writings of many of our moderns, that the method followed by their predecessors cannot be improved upon. God existed before man, and His eternal purpose long antedated His works in time. "Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world" (Acts 15:18). The divine councils went before creation. As a builder draws his plans before he begins to build, so the great Architect predestinated everything before a single creature was called into existence. Nor has God kept this a secret locked in His own bosom; it has pleased Him to make known in His Word the everlasting counsels of His grace, His design in the same, and the grand end He has in view."

So begins A.W. Pink in his classic defense of the Doctrine of Election. The book is firmly based upon Pink's renowned exposition of Scripture and covers the following heads:

1. Introduction -

2. Its Source -

3. Its Grand Original

4. Its Verity -

5. Its Justice -

6. Its Nature

7. Its Design -

8. Its Manifestation -

9. Its Perception

10. Its Blessedness -

11. Its Opposition -

12. Its Publication

This is a great book for personal study of this weighty subject and it is a great book to give to someone who is wrestling with this grand but mysterious truth.

In addition to the excellent material on Election, Part Two of this book is called The Doctrine of Justification.

John Todd (1800-1873) was a master teacher. He published about thirty volumes, all of which were re-issued in England, and several of them have been translated into German, French, modern Greek, Dutch, Danish, Italian, Arabic, Armenian, Turkish, and Tamil. His "Lectures to Children" have been printed in raised letters for the blind, and used as a schoolbook in the colony of Sierra Leone. Of some of his books several hundred thousand copies have been sold, and several of his shorter pieces, notably "Hafed's Dream," were for many years favorites for school readers.

His books FEED MY LAMBS and TRUTH MADE SIMPLE are sermons for children which have become very popular once again after being out of print for more than 125 years.

This book is filled with stories that will cause boys and young people to think about the heavenly meaning found in earthly stories. This book, like all John Todd's works, will both entertain and inform. Todd loved children and he sought always to speak their language without being silly and childish. He always had eternity in view and desired that all who read his books would be brought into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

RICHARD NEWTON, himself the 'Prince of Preacher to the young' (according to CH Spurgeon), said that he learned how to teach children from reading one of the books of John Todd.

WILLIAM G. BLAIKIE, in his outstanding book called 'For the Work of the Ministry' said the following about John Todd, "In preaching to the young, some American ministers have been highly successful; such men as Dr. John Todd and Dr. Richard Newton have attained the first rank in this department of work."

SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY
ROBERT LETHAM

This comprehensive systematic theology by respected theologian Robert Letham covers the whole field of Reformed Christian doctrine from biblical, historical, and theological angles.

Letham begins with God’s ultimate self-revelation as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in indivisible union, continuing on with the works of God in creation, providence, and grace. He draws deeply from Scripture and important voices from the church to provide a clear and concise articulation of the Reformed faith. He also addresses current issues such as feminism, charismatic gifts, sexual ethics, environmentalism, other religions, the nature of truth, and civil liberties. Each chapter is followed by discussion questions, with a glossary of terms included at the end.

This work grounds theological understanding and practice in the life and ministry of the church, accessible to pastors, students, scholars, and anyone who desires to understand, believe, and live scriptural doctrine more fully.

“In this impressive systematic theology, Robert Letham sets before us the ripe fruit of a long career of devoted scholarship. He does so with clarity, confidence, and thoughtful judgment. The result is an elixir drawn from Scripture into which he has carefully stirred ingredients from Patristic orthodoxy, medieval theology, and Reformation and post-Reformation confessionalism. These are judiciously mixed by a theologian conscious that he is writing for the twenty-first century. Systematic Theology is Letham’s personal bequest to the church of Jesus Christ. A magnum opus indeed—which students, ministers, and scholars will find to be a real stimulation to their theological taste buds!” -Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries

“This is a first-class volume, impressively erudite, yet eminently readable. Scrupulously biblical, but at the same time recognizing the value of Christian tradition, it draws extensively, but judiciously, on the insights of the early church fathers, the Reformed confessions, and federal theology, while remaining in constant dialogue with the world of contemporary theological scholarship. The overall organization reflects Letham’s independence of judgment, and the end product is not only a Reformed systematic theology of enduring value but also an encyclopedic reference work for both historical and systematic theology. Unsurpassed in its field.” -Donald MacLeod, Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology, Edinburgh Theological Seminary; author, A Faith to Live By and The Person of Christ

“Robert Letham has blessed us with a systematic theology that is sure to stimulate reflection, discussion, and deeper understanding of both the Holy Scriptures and the church’s interpretations of them to formulate its theology over the last two millennia. One does not need to agree with every detail of Letham’s magnum opus to realize that here is a treasure house of Christian wisdom on the whole counsel of God that will inform your mind and move your heart and affections to serve your Savior and Lord more single-mindedly and zealously than ever before.” -Joel R. Beeke, President and Professor of Systematic Theology and Homiletics, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary; author, Reformed Preaching; coauthor, Reformed Systematic Theology

“Robert Letham writes systematic theology as it should be written. His work is marked by a careful dialogue between the Bible and the great creedal and confessional traditions of the church, always aided and abetted by a panoply of great theologians from the past and the present. This work is marked by clarity of thought and ecumenicity of spirit. Here we have the full fruits of a lifetime of thinking theologically.” -Carl R. Trueman, Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies, Grove City College

“Robert Letham’s Systematic Theology is located within the great tradition of Christian theology, drawing upon Patristic, medieval, Reformational, and contemporary sources. Letham keeps his focus where it belongs—upon the unfathomable richness of the triune God in his being and works. He expounds difficult topics in simple, concise prose, yet without being simplistic. Where Letham occasionally offers fresh formulations of doctrinal topics, he invariably does so in a way that is respectful toward more traditional treatments. Theologians, students of theology, and church members alike will find Letham’s work a wonderful gift to the church.” -Cornelis P. Venema, President and Professor of Doctrinal Studies, Mid-America Reformed Seminary; author, Christ and Covenant Theology and Chosen in Christ

“A systematic theology written from a classical Reformed perspective that takes a fresh approach and aims to reach an audience not schooled in the technical terminology of the discipline—it is a tall order, but Robert Letham has triumphed with a text that is both readable and reliable. Not only pastors and students but also ordinary churchgoers will grow in their faith as they study a book with such depth and clarity of vision. A masterpiece.” -Gerald Bray, Research Professor of Divinity, History, and Doctrine, Beeson Divinity School; author, God Is Love and God Has Spoken

“Robert Letham has produced a substantial Reformed systematic theology which is not so much multum in parvo as multum in magno. He starts with the doctrine of God and the Holy Trinity rather than with the necessity and sufficiency of special revelation. In this sense it may be said that he stresses the catholicity of Reformed doctrine and does justice to the place of natural theology in it, reflecting his own Trinitarian expertise. Letham’s style is not only clear but also fair-minded, giving space to alternative views. Letham is good at the big doctrinal pictures and sensitive to the need to drill down at particular points. He judges between central and peripheral issues. He is to be warmly congratulated on this new book.” -Paul Helm, Former Professor of the History and Philosophy of Religion, King’s College London

“Robert Letham writes as no novitiate but as one who has given his life to understanding and explaining the Christian faith, addressing not only theologians and pastors but also the intelligent man and woman in the pew. I appreciate his contextualized treatment of topics, particularly his appropriation of historical figures often absent in confessionally Reformed approaches to theology. One may differ with him here or there, but I appreciate what he brings to many difficult matters, offering correctives to certain tendencies that even good Reformed thinkers might indulge. It is good to have one so thoroughly conversant with the history of the church, as well as the Bible, to write a systematic theology that resonates for our times as does this one. I heartily commend this new work to all. Tolle lege!” -Alan D. Strange, Professor of Church History, Mid-America Reformed Seminary; author, The Doctrine of the Spirituality of the Church in the Ecclesiology of Charles Hodge and The Imputation of the Active Obedience of Christ in the Westminster Standards

“Robert Letham’s Systematic Theology is the fruit of demanding exegetical work wrapped in a deep appreciation for all the great theology that God has provided for his people through ecumenical creeds and doctrinal standards. It is meant to be faithful to the past and grandly succeeds in that intention. While Letham clearly embeds his theology in properly understood church tradition, he is not afraid to address current theological trends. The text is exceptionally well written, easily comprehended, massively researched, and a drink of cool water for those thirsting for more of God and his word.” -Richard C. Gamble, Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary

“Systematic Theology tells the story of the gospel and brings it to bear on Christian faith and life. This fresh approach is catholic in its scope and distinctly Reformed in its teaching. It is refreshingly nonpolemic, taking the best of the entire Christian tradition with great charity and deep discernment. The fact that I do not agree with everything in the book is part of what makes studying a systematic theology like this so humbling. We are pilgrims on the path to glory, walking in communion with the triune God and longing to see Christ as he is. Letham’s work persuasively and winsomely helps us along this path.” -Ryan M. McGraw, Morton H. Smith Professor of Systematic Theology, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary

“I enthusiastically welcome the publication of this volume by Robert Letham. Keenly informed by the richness of his own Reformed tradition, Systematic Theology engages the best of Christian thought—Patristic, medieval, Reformation, modern, and contemporary—on a deep and fruitful level. There is nothing parochial about this book; reading it will be a joyous education for students and pastors. It deserves a wide audience among Reformed Christians and beyond.” -William B. Evans, Younts Professor of Bible and Religion, Erskine College; author, Imputation and Impartation and A Companion to the Mercersburg Theology

“Robert Letham writes with a teacher’s knack for illustration, a preacher’s liveliness and warmth, and a scholar’s breadth—all of these in exemplary service to what certain Reformers called ‘prophecy’: the powerful conveyance of the word of God that enlivens and purifies the saints’ worship. Extended throughout these chapters is the doctrine of union with Christ. Letham’s Protestant account of theosis near the end of the volume, articulated as a perfecting of this union, not only culminates his book-long engagement with Eastern Orthodox authors and traditions but also goes a long way in addressing the need felt by many young evangelicals for thicker connection to early-church formulations and writings. Avoiding easy answers at every turn, Letham’s contagious enthusiasm for the simple genius of the Christian tradition will inspire readers to live, believe, and preach Scripture more earnestly and fully.” -Andrew Keuer, Professor of Theology and Ethics, Greek Bible College

GOD, YOU ARE: 20 Promises from the Psalms for Kids
By William R. Osborne, Illustrated by Brad Woodard

***SPECIAL APRIL FIRST SALE OF 50% OFF!

20 Psalms and Devotions to Help Children Learn More about Who God Is

The Psalms are full of “You Are” statements—like “You are my rock and fortress” found in Psalm 31. For generations, Christians have used these phrases to praise God for who he is and what he has done for his people. These short, simple statements provide wonderful opportunities for parents to teach their children about the character of God and reflect on who he is in powerful ways.

In this book, professor, pastor, and father William R. Osborne presents short devotionals around the 20 “You Are” statements found in the Psalms. Each devotional is followed by a short prayer that families can pray together as they read. Using a clear and warm style, Osborne provides a distinct connection between the gospel of Jesus Christ and God’s goodness, holiness, and mercy as they are illustrated in the Psalms.

For Children Ages 4–8

**Helps Young Readers Learn to Read the Psalms: Each devotion shows how the Psalms point to the New Testament, showing the connections between Old and New Testaments

**Encourages Children to Pray: This book offers simple prayers that parents and children can read and say together as they echo the words of the psalmist

**Scripture Memorization: Great tool to help children memorize scripture about the character of God

LIVING FOR GOD: A Short Introduction to the Christian Faith
MARK JONES

"Primers like this—a trenchant reminder of the vital matters that lie at the heart of the Christian faith—are ever needful, and especially so in this theologically befuddled generation that is far too often heedless of the value of the past. Highly recommended!" —Michael A. G. Haykin, Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

What difference should doctrine make on our day-to-day Christian life? This book summarizes Christianity in 5 core truths the Trinity, the Son of God, the Spirit, the church, and heaven and hell to show how theology is intended to bring people closer to God. Drawing from writers throughout church history particularly St. Augustine, Richard Baxter, and C. S. Lewis this book summarizes the building blocks of pure Christianity and how they shape minds, hearts, and actions, so readers can know simply and concisely what it means to live for God.

“Mark Jones’s helpful discussion of these major elements of the Christian faith demonstrates his point, shared with C. S. Lewis, that the best resources for devotion to Christ are found in substantial theological investigation conducted under the authority of Scripture.” -Robert Letham, Senior Research Fellow, Union School of Theology

“If you are to experience vitality and growth in the Christian life, nothing is more important than using a spiritual compass oriented to true north. In this book, Mark Jones puts such a compass in our hands. The Christian faith is about living for God! I wish such a book had been put in my hands when I came to faith in Christ. Here is a book to read and pass on to young believers so that they can use rightly calibrated spiritual compasses from the get-go!” -Conrad Mbewe, Pastor, Kabwata Baptist Church, Lusaka, Zambia; Founding Chancellor, African Christian University

“Nothing could be more important than getting a right understanding of the Christian faith. Mark Jones’s Living for God elegantly and accurately presents five pillars fundamental to Christianity. Summarizing the Bible’s teaching with key concepts from the Reformed tradition, this book is not too big and not too small. Jones writes with the broad and deep knowledge of a scholar and the care and maturity of an experienced pastor. His book will be useful both as a starting point for the new Christian and as a point to which the mature can return. I look forward to sharing it with friends and family.” -Emily Van Dixhoorn, author, Confessing the Faith Study Guide

THEOLOGY FOR THE PEOPLE or Biblical Doctrine, Plainly Stated
William S. Plumer

"The knowledge of God possessed by angels and by the spirits of just men made perfect in heaven, is very different in degree from that possessed by even good and able men on earth. Here all men are liable to err, and all men do err. No man on this earth is without some wrong view, or some ignorance, which mars his knowledge. This is no reason for sloth or discouragement; but is a good reason why we should be humble and careful and teachable, and pray for divine light and guidance. It is far different in heaven. There they do always hold the face of God. Matthew 18:10. They do not hope for anything, for they already possess all good. Romans 8:24. 'Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known.' 1 Corinthians 13:12. Knowledge without any mixture of error belongs only to the heavenly state. And yet a great part of the knowledge which the inhabitants of heaven have - concerns the very things which good men are learning in this world. Those above know perfectly what we know in parcels only." - Wm. Plumer

SIMPLY TRINITY: The Unmanipulated Father, Son, and Spirit
MATTHEW BARRETT with Foreword by Scott Swain

"Simply Trinity demonstrates how much is at stake in the trinitarian debates that have recently roiled the evangelical community. I recommend it highly."--Thomas S. Kidd, professor at Baylor University; blogger at The Gospel Coalition

To truly know God, we must understand God as Trinity. But what if the Trinity we've been taught is not the Trinity of the Bible?

In this groundbreaking book, Matthew Barrett reveals a shocking discovery: we have manipulated the Trinity, re-creating the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in our own image. With clarity and creativity, Barrett mines the Scriptures as well as the creeds and confessions of the faith to help us rediscover the beauty, simplicity, and majesty of our triune God. What we believe about the Trinity also has untold consequences for salvation and the Christian life.

Bibliography

"Matthew Barrett has the evangelical instinct for classic, time-tested, deeply traditional biblical teaching about the Trinity. . . . Simply Trinity proclaims the good news of the unmanipulated doctrine of the triune God."--Fred Sanders, Torrey Honors Institute, Biola University

"Readers are led away from the rocks of those who have sought to convince us that biblical, classic trinitarian theology needs radical change, and into the calm, wide sea that is the Christian community's historic faith."--Lewis Ayres, Durham University

"The Trinity is one of the Bible's more challenging doctrines, and yet Matthew Barrett ably guides readers through the issues to present clear and cogent teaching. He opens the treasures of the past and draws on patristic, medieval, Reformation, and contemporary theologians to explain the doctrine of the Trinity. But he also usefully shows where some have gone astray and charitably speaks the truth in love. People would do well to read this book and plumb the depths of the Bible's teaching on the nature of our triune God." --J. V. Fesko, professor of systematic and historical theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, MS

"Matthew Barrett offers a sane and sober recovery of the church's exegesis of Scripture and defends the Christian doctrine of the Trinity against its unwitting saboteurs."--Michael F. Bird, Ridley College

"I was blown away by this book, a clear, powerful intervention into trinitarian controversy. The critique of evangelical subordinationists alone is fantastic, and no attentive reader should miss their connections with social trinitarianism. Evangelical theology is in serious trouble, and I think many of us have known that for years, but this book will be impossible to ignore. We simply must turn this trend around or evangelicalism will lose its hold on the gospel." --Craig Carter, Tyndale University

"Simply Trinity will help nudge readers to a more scriptural and historically orthodox formulation of the doctrine of the Trinity; it will also help in doing the same for the various attributes of God. If you are interested in what Scripture teaches about God and Trinity, how the early creeds of Christianity formulated Scripture's teaching into creedal statements, and how many in our day have left the old paths on this issue, this book is for you." --Richard Barcellos, Grace Reformed Baptist Church, Palmdale, CA; IRBS Theological Seminary, Mansfield TX

MATTHEW BARRETT is associate professor of Christian theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the author of None Greater; Canon, Covenant, and Christology; and God's Word Alone. He is also the executive editor of Credo magazine and the host of the Credo podcast.

ENDORSEMENTS

“God and his infinite excellencies are endlessly engrossing. What wisdom, insight, comfort, and challenge are found in Charnock’s voluminous ruminations! Unpublished in his lifetime, they are amassed here and augmented by Mark Jones’s expert notations. Charnock provides food for the soul, tonic for the intellect, impetus for worship, and biblical conviction for everyday life.” -Robert W. Yarbrough, Professor of New Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary

“Nothing purifies the mind and inflames holiness in the heart like meditation on the perfections of God. Charnock’s classic work on the divine attributes, which he wrote the last three years of his life, has never been matched in its profound and practical approach to this rich subject. This work is a treasure of sound theology and humble adoration of God. The author’s exposition on the goodness of God is alone worth the purchase of these volumes; it is unsurpassed in all English literature. Lightly edited for the modern reader and studded with insightful introductions to each discourse, this new edition by Mark Jones will be a great help to all who seek diligently to know the Lord.” -Joel R. Beeke, President and Professor of Systematic Theology and Homiletics, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary; author, Reformed Preaching; coauthor, Reformed Systematic Theology

“Stephen Charnock’s work on the existence and attributes of God is perhaps the most thorough and detailed contribution to the topic in the post-Reformation period. Charnock’s pastoral instincts, his incisive grasp of scholastic literature, his theological precision, and his sensitivity to the biblical foundations of his subject made this an outstanding contribution to the church of his day. It is a great pleasure to see a complete and updated version in print and accessible to a new readership.” -Robert Letham, Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology, Union School of Theology; author, Systematic Theology

“As a true labor of love and scholarship, Mark Jones offers the church not another reprint but a new edition of Charnock’s best-known work. In this edition, explanatory essays, judicious comments, and expanded citations make Charnock more accessible and intelligible than ever before. As the nineteenth-century introduction notes, compared to many Puritans, Charnock ‘is more theological than any of them, and his theology, too, is more sound than that of some.’ As Jones’s introduction intimates, the same can be true when Charnock is compared to writers in our day. So start a book group and read about the existence and attributes of God with Charnock and his editor as your godly guides.” -Chad Van Dixhoorn, Professor of Church History, Westminster Theological Seminary; author, Confessing the Faith and God’s Ambassadors

Stephen Charnock (1628–1680) was a prominent English Puritan theologian and preacher in England and Ireland during the seventeenth century. Trained at Cambridge and Oxford, he served as chaplain to Henry Cromwell, the chief governor of Ireland, and is known for his discourses on the existence and attributes of God.

Mark Jones (PhD, Leiden Universiteit) serves as the pastor of Faith Vancouver Presbyterian Church (PCA) in British Columbia, Canada. He has authored many books, including Living for God and God Is, and speaks all over the world on Christology and the Christian life. Mark and his wife, Barbara, have four children.

VOICES FROM THE PAST: Puritan Daily Devotional Readings (Two Volume Set of Readings)
Compiled by Richard Rushing

VOLUME ONE: 428 Page Beautiful Hardcover with Dust Jacket

TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING! This work has long been anticipated. Glean from the wisdom and spiritual depth of the Puritans during 2010 through these 365 daily readings.

Over the past fifty years there has been a great resurgence of interest in the writings of the Puritans. The reading of their works has brought great benefit to the people of God in many lands. Christians from many different backgrounds and cultures owe a great debt of gratitude to those faithful pastors and preachers who continue to speak through their writings even though they have long since entered into their heavenly reward. The Puritans really knew how to teach and apply God's Word in the Spirit's power!

Richard Rushing has compiled this book of daily devotional readings from his favourite Puritan authors because of the great help he has gained from their Works. 'How thrilling it has been for me to read the Puritans on the glory and attributes of God, divine providence, fellowship with God, holiness of life and the mortification of indwelling sin, heavenly mindedness, prayer, evangelistic zeal, and trust in the Lord during times of affliction. At every turn these truths are eloquently taught, faithfully applied, and kindly offered as the subject of sweet spiritual meditation.'

This book is sent forth with the prayer that it will open a door to the vast stores of treasure to be found in the writings of the Puritans and that it will stimulate further exploration of this rich spiritual inheritance.

VOLUME TWO: 432 Page Beautiful Hardcover with Dust Jacket

Richard Rushing has compiled a further 365 daily devotional readings to take you through the year with the Puritans. Building on Voices from the Past (volume 1), Voices From the Past 2 is an additional treasury of wisdom from such authors as Stephen Charnock, Thomas Manton, David Clarkson, Thomas Brooks, John Bunyan, and Jonathan Edwards, and others.

The editor has painstakingly selected these readings from their sources, some of which are still widely available in print, others of which are more scarce. Readers will find these choice extracts to be excellent ‘thoughts for the day’, and will frequently find themselves wanting to explore more of the writings of these authors of the past.

THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL THEOLOGY: Volumes One, Two, Three & Four
Petrus van Mastricht

Petrus van Mastricht's Theoretical and Practical Theology presents one of the most comprehensive methods of treating Christian doctrine. In it, Mastricht treats every theological topic according to a four-part approach: exegetical, dogmatic, elenctic, and practical. As a body of divinity, it combines a rigorous, scholastic treatment of doctrine with the pastoral aim of preparing people to live for God through Christ. Students and pastors will find it a valuable model for moving from the text of Scripture to doctrinal formulation that will edify the people of God.

Volume 1, Prolegomena, provides an introduction to doing systematic theology. Mastricht begins by addressing the nature of theology, wherein he lays out the proper method, subject matter, and definition of theology. He then discusses Scripture as the rule of doing theology, as it is the only infallible source and foundation for knowing God. Finally, Mastricht gives his rationale for the best distribution of theological topics. This volume also includes Mastricht's homiletical aid “The Best Method of Preaching,” as well as a biographical sketch by Adriaan Neele to help readers understand the significance of Mastricht’s life and ministry.

VOLUME 2, Faith in the Triune God, delivers a thorough treatment of the doctrine of God. Mastricht begins his consideration of theology proper with a substantial chapter on saving faith, reminding readers that contemplating God apart from true faith will fall short of the salvation of their soul. Mastricht then discusses the subject of God in three main divisions. First, he treats the existence of God and our knowledge of him. Second, he discusses the divine essence as it is revealed through the names and attributes of God. Third, Mastricht carefully details the Trinitarian nature of the one God who subsists in three persons.

VOLUME 3, The Works of God and the Fall of Man, is a book of origins—origins of the created order and of sin. Mastricht begins with a discussion of the decrees of God and how they establish His eternal purpose for everything. He then shows how the decrees are carried out in creation and in God’s continual providence. The volume concludes with Mastricht’s treatment of the apostacy of Adam from his original estate and the devastating effects of sin that followed. This is an important volume for learning how God governs all things, even the rebellious actions of those good things He created.

VOLUME 4- Redemption in Christ

Examines God’s great work of obtaining redemption in the Mediator, Jesus Christ. Mastricht sets the stage with a discussion about the covenant of grace as God’s eternal purpose of restoration and restitution for the elect of fallen humanity. From that vantage point, he uses the remainder of the volume to address the glorious procurer of this covenantal grace. Mastricht walks us through the dignity, names, person, offices, states, and redemptive accomplishment of Jesus Christ. Petrus van Mastricht (1630–1706) was a Dutch theologian who studied at Utrecht under Gisbertus Voetius and Johannes Hoornbeeck. He pastored churches in the Netherlands and taught at the universities of Duisburg and Utrecht. His Theoretical-Practical Theology was praised by many as one of the great works of systematic theology and is noted for treating Christian doctrine comprehensively from its exegetical foundations to its practical use for one’s soul.

Todd M. Rester is a historian of early modern theology and philosophy in the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy, and Politics, Queen’s University Belfast, as well as Associate Professor of Church History at Westminster Theological Seminary. He also volunteers as the director of The Junius Institute for Digital Reformation Research.

Joel R. Beeke is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, and a pastor of the Heritage Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

ENDORSEMENTS

“As to the books you speak of: Mastricht is sometimes in one volume, a very large thick quarto, sometimes in two quarto volumes. I believe it could not be had new under 8 or 10 pounds. Turretin is in three volumes in quarto, and would probably be about the same price. They are both excellent. Turretin is on polemical divinity, on the 5 points & all other controversial points, & is much larger in these than Mastricht, & is better for one that desires only to be thoroughly versed in controversies. But take Mastricht for divinity in general, doctrine, practice & controversy, or as an universal system of divinity; & it is much better than Turretin or any other book in the world, excepting the Bible, in my opinion.”—Jonathan Edwards to Joseph Bellamy, January 15, 1747

“Any serious student of Reformed theology needs to sit at the feet of Petrus van Mastricht. The challenge has been that to do so you needed to know Latin or Dutch. Thanks to the herculean efforts of the folks at the Dutch Reformed Translation Society and Reformation Heritage Books, English readers can now learn the art of ‘living for God through Christ.’”—Stephen J. Nichols, president of Reformation Bible College and chief academic officer of Ligonier Ministries

“Van Mastricht is one of the greatest of the Reformed orthodox, exerting a profound influence on subsequent theologians, including Jonathan Edwards. His grasp of the tradition, his ability to interact with contemporary issues, and his careful articulation of orthodoxy exemplify the best of Protestant theology after the Reformation. Yet the lack of an English translation has meant that he has been known more by reputation than by content in the Anglophone world. Here at last is an English translation which will allow a whole new audience of pastors, theologians, and laypeople to draw once again on this profound theological source.”—Carl R. Trueman, professor of biblical and religious studies, Grove City College

“What if you could have a systematic theology that approached something like Turretin’s precision and Brakel’s devotion while, by design, helping men preach better? It would look like Mastricht. This has long been my favorite system of theology, and I have never been so eager to endorse and promote a book.”—Ryan M. McGraw, Morton H. Smith Professor of Systematic Theology, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary

“A new appreciation has grown in our time for the great post-Reformation theologians of the Reformed tradition, and Petrus van Mastricht was a towering giant among them. Jonathan Edwards thought he was better than Francis Turretin! Mastricht’s magnum opus Theoretical-Practical Theology, however, is virtually unknown and unquoted today, accessible only to competent and determined Latinists. This translation does for Mastricht what Giger and Dennison did for Turretin—it provides a readable, critical, annotated English translation that puts Mastricht within easy reach of pastors, seminarians, and other students of theology. A sound and experiential divine, who (it may surprise you to learn) interacts with and criticizes Kabbalah and Islam as well as Descartes and Socinians, Mastricht is always concerned to show that true theology is practical and never merely notional. Truth is unto godliness.” —Ligon Duncan, chancellor and CEO, John E. Richards Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary

STUDIES IN THE SCRIPTURES: Volumes One - Twelve (1922 - 1944)
A.W. PINK

THESE VOLUMES ARE CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE.

The books of Arthur W. Pink are becoming increasingly scarce. Publishers are fast dropping doctrinally sound books like Pink, in favor of feel-good, watered down stuff.

This the first complete printing of all of Pink's works. Get them while you can, for they are a treasure, and will certainly become valuable collector's items for lovers of God's Word.

Pink was a theosophist before his conversion, and became a much traveled Baptist preacher. Now, because of his regeneration by God the Spirit, He has become noted for his many Biblically sound books. And all of those books appeared as monthly installments in his magazine, then collected into bound volumes as Studies in the Scriptures, except The Sovereignty of God.

These 33 volumes of the magazine were issued yearly for 33 years. He also taught by mail some 100 or so students during this period, besides preaching at many Bible conferences. He was a devoted, intense student of the Bible, devoting a set number of hours per day in such study. Would-be visitors were met at the door and told by Mrs. Pink, Mr. Pink is in his study. He brooked no interruption. He had a photographic mind which carried prodigious information in it, to the point where he could not only often quote a passage, but tell you the page and the edition from which he was quoting it, though not having seen that page for years. Because of this ability it took a very brave man indeed to contradict something which Pink was teaching. For this man was capable of rolling out 50 or 60 pertinent Scripture quotations to prove his point.

Having read all the 10,000 pages of Pink, and having been taught by him for two years before his death, the Reviewer is certainly prejudiced in his favor. Nevertheless, it is our honest opinion that every one of the readers of these volumes will profit immensely from all these volumes.

First, because there are many excellent articles by outstanding authors, and from magazines and news media, that no longer can be found. This is particularly true in the first ten volumes or so, before Pink began to personally write all the articles.

Secondly, because there are hundreds of short articles by Pink, on various interesting subjects, which have not been included in any of his books. Among to be noticed are his first articles of each year, usually only a page or two, but full of meat. Some of these short articles have been printed in booklet form, but few have access to them any more. For example, The Fourfold Salvation, several booklets on the Sabbath, etc., each of which will enrich and inform the reader.

Thirdly, There are many short quotations appearing here and there full of pithy and memorable truths, for Pink was a very judicious reader who knew what would best stir the reader to further study on a subject, or on a pregnant verse of the Scriptures.

Fourthly, There have been some very injudicious editing of some of Pink's writings in the published books. Particularly to be noted is the removal of Pink's entire chapter on Reprobation from the Banner of Truth edition of The Sovereignty of God. Pink would have been justly furious about this ill-treatment because it puts him in a false position regarding what he considered a very important doctrine.

In short, you will gain considerable benefit from having ALL of Pink's writings in these 33 volumes, blessings which you would miss if you only would read his published books.

ALL THE FOLLOWING UNEDITED VOLUMES ARE INCLUDED IN THIS SET:

Exposition of Hebrews (he quotes the best of the best authors, including Owen, Gouge, Brown)

The Life of David (including in the SGP publication, I & II Samuel) - The Life of Elijah (much of 1 Kings) - The Life of Elisha (much of 2 Kings) - The Satisfaction of Christ (great on atonement) - The Gospel of John - Gleanings in Genesis - Gleanings in Exodus - Gleanings in Joshua - The Seven Sayings of the Saviour on the Cross - The Prayers of the Apostles -The Sermon on the Mount - The Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer - Exposition of 1 John 1 and 2, Arthur W. Pink - The Doctrine of Human Depravity - Exposition of I & II Samuel, Matthew Henry, John Gill, Arthur W. Pink (includes Life of David, Pink) - Practical Christianity - Pink Jewels - The Saint's Perseverance - Sanctification - The Saints' Perseverance - The Doctrine of Reconciliation - The Attributes of God - Studies in Saving Faith - The Divine Inspiration of the Scriptures - The Ten Commandments - Profiting From the Word - The Doctrine of Election - Understanding the Scriptures and dozens of others which I cannot recall at present.

If you were able to obtain all of these in separate volumes at today's prices they would cost you much more than $1,000.00. You will not want to miss this opportunity to own this precious set, and to have it to will it to your children.

ARTHUR W. PINK (1890-1953) was a Baptist Preacher in England, Australia, and the United States. He is most famous for his book The Sovereignty of God. After its advent, he, assisted by his editor Mr. I. Herendeen, launched his yearly publication, Studies in the Scriptures in 1921. These continued until his death, totaling altogether 33 volumes of 288 pp. each. Most of Pink's books are taken from these yearly volumes (written monthly in 24 page format).

A PURITAN THEOLOGY: Doctrine for Life
Joel Beeke & Mark Jones

Finally, the perfect companion to MEET THE PURITANS, this volume may be the most thorough volume ever produced on PURITAN THEOLOGY. The first printing of this volume sold out within the first few weeks and a second printing is already available.

Pastor Rob Ventura has said the following: ""What did the Puritans believe about God's providence and the perseverance of the saints? What were their views on conscience and Christ's intercession for us? In 'A Puritan Theology' compiled by Dr. Joel R. Beeke and Mark Jones, we have the answers to these and many other questions. In this unique one volume work we have a robust systematic theology drawn from the teachings of the most beloved Puritans: an outstanding achievement indeed! This resource is a must read for every pastor, seminarian and serious student of the Reformed Faith. It will be a volume that I turn to again and again."

Joel Beeke begins the Introduction with these words: "The word 'Puritan' originated in the 1560s as a bit of pejorative hurled at people who wanted further reformation in the Church of England. While some social historians think the term should be abandoned due to the various ways it was used during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, others who identify themselves as Reformed or Calvinistic defend the continuing use of the terms 'Puritan' and 'Puritanism.'

This book is about Puritan theology. Its chapters will address various areas of the systematic theology of Puritanism. Fine studies on Puritan theology already exist. Some address the Puritans in general, and some focus on the work of a particular Puritan theologian. To date, however, there has been no single work that provides an overview of Puritan thought concerning Scripture's major doctrines, historically and systematically considered. We hope this book will fill that gap. We will begin by stating what we will and will not cover, and why."

WE ARE OFFERING A 50% DISCOUNT ON TWO NEW TITLES FROM CROSSWAY PUBLISHERS.

(1) REFORMATION THEOLOGY: A Systematic Summary edited by Matthew Barrett with Prologue by Michael Horton

Five hundred years ago, the Reformers were defending doctrines such as justification by faith alone, the authority of Scripture, and God's grace in salvation—some to the point of death. Many of these same essential doctrines are still being challenged today, and there has never been a more crucial time to hold fast to the enduring truth of Scripture.

In Reformation Theology, Matthew Barrett has brought together a team of expert theologians and historians writing on key doctrines taught and defended by the Reformers centuries ago. With contributions from Michael Horton, Gerald Bray, Michael Reeves, Carl Trueman, Robert Kolb, and many others, this volume stands as a manifesto for the church, exhorting Christians to learn from our spiritual forebears and hold fast to sound doctrine rooted in the Bible and passed on from generation to generation.

(2) LABOR WITH HOPE: Gospel Meditations on Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Motherhood by Gloria Furman with Jesse Scheumann

The world is filled with messages for women about pregnancy. Popular books and well-meaning family and friends offer unsolicited advice about what to expect and how to stay healthy—sometimes resulting in joy and excitement but other times leading to discouragement and fear.

The Bible, too, has a lot to say about childbirth—offering real hope that nothing in this world can match. In Labor with Hope, Gloria Furman helps women see topics such as pregnancy, infertility, miscarriage, birth pain, and new life in the framework of the larger biblical narrative, infusing cosmic meaning into their personal experience by exploring how they point to eternal realities. Women will see that only Christ can provide the strength they desperately need in order to labor with hope.

CONFESSING THE IMPASSIBLE GODThe Biblical, Classical & Confessional Doctrine of Divine Impassibility
Ed. By Ronald Baines, Richard Barcellos, James Butler, Stefan Lindblad, James Renihan

What does the Confession of Faith mean when it states that God is "without body, parts or passions"? This book will lead you by the hand intio the biblical basis for the proper understanding of the last of these terms: GOD IS WITHOUT PASSIONS.

As I read 'Confessing the Impassible God' something struck me. It wasn't just the importance, weight, or substance of the topic or the far reaching implications of the doctrine of Impassability. What initially drew me in was the structure of the book itself. The content of each chapter, as well as each part, has the strength and coherency to stand alone and be read and understood independently. However when you take these collection of essays together you end up with a robust picture of this doctrine. This picture in turn guides and directs pathways to possible further and in more detail study. CIG capitalizes on each individual author's expertise, their personal and professional study, and their ability to articulate their research in a digestible manner for the average layman. The synthesis of these component essays shows a seamless and logical move from one chapter to the next; from one part to the next, each building on the summation of the previous with the cumulative effect of seeing the up close detailed beauty of this doctrine without losing sight of the grand macro view painted concerning this aspect of theology proper. The editors, in the preface, outline the structure, content and movement of the book. From the preface alone the books development becomes apparent.

BIBLICAL TYPOLOGY: How the Old Testament Points to Christ, His Church, and the Consummation
VERN S. POYTHRESS

How to Study the Old Testament for Signs of Christ

Believers read Scripture to follow Christ and deepen their relationship with him. But since a majority of the Bible was written before Jesus’s life and death on the cross, many people rely on the Old Testament for historical context and moral guidance alone. However, when studied in detail, we see how even the Old Testament reveals Christ as the center of God’s plan for redemption.

Biblical Typology examines how the Old Testament foreshadows Christ, the church, and the consummation through types—or symbols—pointing toward fulfillment. Well-known for his academic yet accessible writing, Vern S. Poythress not only provides examples of types and analogies found in God’s word but also teaches readers a practical framework and diagram for effectively examining them throughout Scripture. Readers will learn how to identify and interpret biblical typology for themselves as they deepen their understanding of the Bible and the wisdom of God.

ENDORSEMENTS

“I am delighted to see Vern Poythress’s book on biblical typology. His knowledge of the Scriptures and the interpretive principles necessary to handle them responsibly is unsurpassed. He presents the complex topic of biblical types clearly and simply so that laypeople and scholars alike will benefit. This is a book that you will not want to miss.” -Richard L. Pratt Jr., President, Third Millennium Ministries

“As readers learn how the New Testament relates to the Old, they will encounter the subject and language of typology. I’m grateful for Vern Poythress providing this accessible resource so that interpreters can think about how the patterns and shadows of the Old Testament point to Christ, the church, and the new creation. The divine author of Holy Scripture is summing up all things in his Son. Let Poythress help you identify key symbols and types along the storyline of redemption.” -Mitchell L. Chase, Associate Professor of Biblical Studies, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; Preaching Pastor, Kosmosdale Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky

(1) SMOOTH STONES TAKEN FROM ANCIENT BROOKS: Selections from the Writings of Thomas Brooks by C.H. Spurgeon

‘As a writer, Brooks scatters stars with both his hands: he hath dust of gold; in his storehouse are all manner of precious stones.’ So wrote C.H. Spurgeon in his Preface to this book. He counted Thomas Brooks among his favourite Puritan authors, and it is not hard to see why. Brooks’ popularity lies both in his subjects – practical truths, central to the Christian life – and in the manner of his presentation. He is ever direct, urgent, fervent, full of Scripture, and able to choose words which make his sentences stick in one’s mind.

This book is a collection of sentences, illustrations, and quaint sayings from this renowned Puritan. Gathered by Spurgeon out of the 6 volume set of Brooks’ Works, it remains an excellent introduction to both the man and his writings.

Spurgeon continues, ‘Reader, thou hast here presented to thee, in a cheap and readable form, the choice sayings of one of the King’s mighties. The great divine who wrote these precious sentences was of the race of the giants. He was head and shoulders above all the people, not in his stature (like Saul), but in mind, and soul, and grace. Treasure these gems, and adorn thyself with them, by putting them into the golden setting of holy practice, which is the end the writer always aimed at. Use these “smooth stones” as David of old, and may the Lord direct them to the very forehead of thy sins, for this is the author’s main design! One of these pithy extracts may assist our meditations for a whole day, and may open up some sweet passage of Scripture to our understandings, and perhaps some brief sentence may stick in the sinner’s conscience, like an arrow from the bow of God. So prays the servant of Christ and his church.’ C.H. Spurgeon”.

(2) THE SINFULNESS OF SIN by Ralph Venning (1621-1674)

‘Works like Ralph Venning’s The Sinfulness of Sin have steered me into a greater understanding of God, his word, and indeed even my own heart. Few today would dare think so carefully and comprehensively about the Bible’s teaching on the stuff of sin. Fewer still would dare write it. Perhaps even fewer have sat to read Venning’s cogent study. But any who read this book will never think the same way about sin, evil, and God’s grace in Christ Jesus. Thank you, Banner.’ — DAVID GARNER

BOOK DESCRIPTION

We cannot understand the Christian gospel until we know what sin is. Yet modern secular counsellors urge us to ignore both the word and what it tells us about our rebellion against God and his law. Sadly, the church too often serves as an echo chamber for such cheap and short-sighted wisdom. It’s literature spreads the deceptive message that all is well. But it is only when we begin to see our sinfulness that we are able to discover God’s forgiveness.

Although The Sinfulness of Sin was written three hundred years ago, it remains an oasis of truth in a desert of lies. First published in the aftermath of the Great Plague of London and entitled Sin, The Plague of Plagues, this book gives a crystal-clear explanation of what sin is, why it is so serious, and what we need to do about it. Here is reliable medicine for a fatal epidemic.

(3) AN ARK FOR ALL GOD'S NOAHS: In A Gloomy Stormy Day by Thomas Brooks

We live in difficult days and in trying times. This book, with its quaint yet vivid title, points us to the One in whom Christian men and women have always found the strength to persevere come what may. Taking Lamentations 3:24 as his starting-point – ‘The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him,’ – Thomas Brooks expounds the attributes of God with the aim of comforting those who have felt not only the stresses and strains of daily life but also the searing pain of loss in its various forms. God, he says, ‘is a portion that is exactly suited to the condition of the soul in its desires, needs, wants, longings and prayers. All the soul needs is found in God. There is light to enlighten the soul, wisdom to counsel the soul, power to support the soul, goodness to supply the soul, mercy to pardon the soul, beauty to delight the soul, glory to ravish the soul, and fullness to fill the soul.’

‘All true comfort and happiness is only to be found in having an all-sufficient God for your portion.’

(4) CHRIST SET FORTH: As the Cause of Justification and as the Object of Justifying Faith by Thomas Goodwin

‘Turning to nearly any page in this volume, readers will be rewarded with a remarkably pastoral theology of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.’ — MICHAEL HORTON

BOOK DESCRIPTION

First published in 1642, Christ Set Forth — one of Thomas Goodwin’s most beloved and enduring works — is a book full of theological riches and penetrating pastoral insights. Addressing, from an exposition of Romans 8:34, the pastoral problem that many believers stray in their faith by looking into their own hearts for signs of grace instead of looking away from themselves to Christ, Christ Set Forth is primarily a book written to encourage Christians. As Scott Berggren says in the Foreword,

It is a guidebook for keeping one’s heart and faith pointed in the right direction, towards Christ himself. In it Goodwin pushes aside anything that might displace Christ in one’s heart. In chapter after chapter he sets forth the glory of Christ and his work as mediator as the only object of one’s faith and affection.

(5) THE GREAT GAIN OF GODLINESS: Exposition and Application of Malachi 3:16-18 by Thomas Watson

C.H. Spurgeon had a well-stocked library of around 12,000 volumes. However, one rare book was not to be found amongst that valuable collection: Thomas Watson on Malachi 3:16-18. With a note of sadness in his voice he said to his College students: ‘This volume would be a great find if we could come at it, for Watson is one of the clearest and liveliest of Puritan authors. We fear we shall never see this commentary, for we have tried to obtain it, and tried in vain’.

In this reset and lightly edited edition you can now read the book that was on Spurgeon’s ‘wish-list’! The Great Gain of Godliness is Watson’s exposition of Malachi 3:16-18. In it he aims ‘to encourage solid piety and confute the atheists of the world, who imagine there is no gain in godliness.’ This book has all the hallmarks of Thomas Watson’s other writings: a combination of rich spirituality, nourishing doctrine, and sane practical wisdom coupled with fascinating illustrations and a very pleasant style.

(6) ALL THINGS FOR GOOD: Classic Puritan Exposition of Romans 8:28 by Thomas Watson

Thomas Watson’s book All Things For Good provides the biblical answer to the contemporary question; Why do bad things happen to good people?

Thomas Watson, the 17th century minister of St. Stephen’s Walbrook, believed he faced two great difficulties in his pastoral ministry. The first was making the unbeliever sad, in the recognition of his need of God’s grace. The second was making the believer joyful in response to God’s grace. He believed the answer to the second difficulty could be found in Paul’s teaching in Romans 8.28: God works all things together for good for his people.

First published in 1663 (under the title A Divine Cordial), the year after Watson and some two thousand other ministers were ejected from the Church of England and exposed to hardship and suffering, All Things For Good contains the rich exposition of a man who lived when only faith in God’s Word could lead him to such confidence.

Thomas Watson’s exposition is always simple, illuminating and rich in practical application. He explains that both the best and the worst experiences work for the good of God’s people. He carefully analyses what it means to be someone who ‘loves God’ and is ‘called according to his purpose’.

(7) PARTICULAR REDEMPTION: The End and Design of the Death of Christ by John Hurrion (1675-1731)

‘Christ gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.’

In Particular Redemption, taking up these words of Titus 2:14, John Hurrion expounds the doctrine of redemption, focusing attention especially on the end and design, extent and importance of the death of Christ. There is a peculiar importance attached to a man’s last words. That is especially true of John Hurrion. As his life was ebbing away, his mind was flooded with thoughts about his Saviour, Jesus Christ, as he prepared the four addresses found in this book for the press. ‘The delight he took in his subject’, his editor wrote, ‘carried him above his great pain and weakness’, and in dying he confessed: ‘The death of Christ being the fountain of our life, there is nothing more necessary, pleasant, or useful to the Christian, than a right apprehension and remembrance of it.’

‘I believe, with certainty, that there is no other view of the doctrine of Redemption able to satisfy the soul…In this doctrine my soul finds the means of life and the means also of dying in comfort.’ — From the Preface by John Elias

LECTURES IN SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY: Volume One - THE DOCTRINE OF GOD
GREG NICHOLS, Rob Ventura, General Editor

Rob Ventura, the General Editor of this new series of Theological Volumes, writes, "I'm excited to announce that the long-awaited theological works of Greg Nichols will be coming out soon. We hope to have the first of seven volumes ready by December this year or by January next year. If you would, please keep the project in prayer. See the endorsements below we have already received -

"I have waited for 20 years to see these lectures finally delivered to us in book form. Though Greg Nichols has evidently interacted with the great Systematic theologians of the past, the contents of these pages are no mere echoes of a bygone era. He has used his gifts and applied his mind in his vintage years to build on this historic foundation and bequeathed to the church a Systematic Theology that is both biblically based and historically fresh. If these are the first fruits, I wonder what the other volumes will be like!" -Dr. Conrad Mbewe, Chancellor of the African Christian University and Principal of the Lusaka Ministerial College in Lusaka, Zambia

"In a day full of light books, Greg Nichols has given us a treatment on the attributes of God in a manner so thoroughly Biblical as to establish the adoration of our Lord upon the firmest of foundations. Here we find gems worth mining. Here is solid nourishment for the head and heart of every hungry believer." - John Snyder, Christ Church, New Albany, Mississippi, Authored 'Behold Your GodÆ, PhD. PRAYER: Communing with God in Everything - Collected Insights from A.W. Tozer

Tozer understood prayer as few do: as a way of life. This volume will help readers capture that same grand vision.

With biblical wisdom and stunning insight, Tozer warns us of the barrenness of busyness - of 'hurting ourselves where we cannot afford it.' He urges us to commune regularly with God and offers varied reflections on what that entails.

BANNER OF TRUTH- PURITAN PAPERBACKS
Thomas Brooks, John Flavel, Thomas Goodwin, Thomas Manton, George Swinnock, I.D.E. Thomas, Ralph Venning, Thomas Watson

WE HAVE GATHERED MORE THAN A DOZEN BRILLIANT PURITAN PAPERBACK TITLES FROM BANNER OF TRUTH.

(1) AN ARK FOR ALL GOD'S NOAH'S: In a Gloomy Story Day by Thomas Brooks

(2) HEAVEN ON EARTH: Assurance in the Christian Life by Thomas Brooks

‘All saints shall enjoy a heaven when they leave this earth; some saints enjoy a heaven while they are here on earth. That saints might enjoy two heavens is the project of this book.’ — JOSEPH CARYL

The subject of assurance is one of the most important elements in Christian experience. Heaven on Earth exposes that there is no higher privilege than to be a child of God and to know it, for assurance brings joy to worship and prayer, and provides strength and boldness to our witness. Correspondingly, failure and weakness in all these areas can often be traced back to a lack of assurance, or even false assurance. This work of Thomas Brooks, first published in 1654, deals with all of these aspects of assurance in a way that is both biblical and pastoral. Brooks ‘scatters stars with both his hands’ wrote C.H. Spurgeon. His teaching is clear, thorough and greatly needed in the present spiritual climate. Brooks both explains what true assurance is and guides the reader in how it may be fully experienced.

(3) THE SECRET KEY TO HEAVEN: The Vital Importance of Private Prayer by Thomas Brooks

‘The power of religion and godliness lives, thrives, or dies, as closet prayer lives, thrives, or dies.’ This was the deeply held conviction of Thomas Brooks. As a pastor who knew his people well, he feared that many Christians did not understand the ‘necessity, excellency, and usefulness’ of private prayer, and that many lived in ‘too great a neglect of this indispensable duty.’

Focusing on our Lord’s words about ‘closet prayer’ in Matthew 6:6, Brooks supplies us with a masterful treatment of a vitally important aspect of the Christian’s life. His aim is intensely practical: ‘to preserve and keep up the power of religion and godliness both in men’s houses, hearts, and lives.’

(4) SMOOTH STONES TAKEN FROM ANCIENT BROOKS: Selections from the Writings of Thomas Brooks by C.H.

(5) ALL THINGS MADE NEW: Living the Christian Life by John Flavel, selected and edited by Lewis Allen

Numerous stories are told from John Flavel’s life of how people ‘happened to meet him’ and came away deeply thankful to God, full of resolve to walk with Christ as a result. The same is true of encounters made with Flavel’s writings, as in All Things Made New.

Flavel spent almost his entire ministry in a busy town serving working people. He believed that the gospel impacts and shapes every thought, every feeling, every ambition, emotion, desire, success, tragedy and joy. Christ makes all things new for the believer, and teaches us to follow him with confidence, until that day when he truly renews all things. To read Flavel is to catch and to be changed by the same vision.

(6) CHRIST SET FORTH: As the Cause of Justification and as the Object of Justifying Faith by Thomas Goodwin

(7) FLOWERS FROM THE PURITAN'S GARDEN: Illustrations and Meditations from Thomas Manton by C.H. Spurgeon

Do you ever underline helpful passages in books you are reading? This is exactly what C. H. Spurgeon used to do when reading the Puritans. Whilst reading Thomas Manton, he was struck time and time again by the ‘solid, sensible instruction, forcibly delivered’ that he found there.

To Manton’s thoughts, Spurgeon added his own; the result being, as Spurgeon put it, that he cleared Manton’s house of all his pictures, and then hung them up in frames of his own. These newly framed pictures are exhibited in Flowers From a Puritan’s Garden, which Spurgeon intended to be used as an aid to meditation and prayer. Preachers will also find inspiration in these Manton-Spurgeon combinations for sensible and clear sermon illustrations.

(8) THE INCOMPARABLENESS OF GOD: In His Being, Attributes, Works, and Word by George Swinnock

George Swinnock is one of the easiest Puritan authors to read. He is theological yet his doctrine is expressed in vivid fashion and, while he is practical, his counsel is marked by a keen sensitivity to the doctrines taught in Scripture. Thomas Manton commended his work as coming ‘from one both of a good head and heart.’ In this exposition of Psalm 89:6, which looks at the incomparable being, attributes, works, and word of God, Swinnock is not content to let the truth lie on the surface of the mind. He drives it home to the heart, using powerful arguments, colourful illustrations, and personal applications. His great desire is for the reader to come to know, enjoy and love the incomparable God of the Bible. ‘He who knows God aright is fully satisfied in him; when he once drinks of the “fountain of living waters,” he thirsts no more after other objects.’

‘The holiness and happiness of the rational creature consists in these two: his holiness, in conformity to God; his happiness, in communion with him. And these two have a dependence on each other. They only who are like him, can enjoy him.’

(9) THE GOLDEN TREASURY OF PURITAN QUOTATIONS selected by I.D.E. Thomas

The Golden Treasury of Puritan Quotations does not belong to the ordinary run of anthologies but is a masterful selection by an author who has given many years to his work. The 1500 quotations from a wide range of Puritans have been chosen with great care, and arranged under topical headings. They form an ideal introduction to the writings of the great and godly men of the 17th century, and will prove to be devotional reading of the highest quality. Those who are already familiar with the Puritan writings will find the ‘Treasury’ to be a perfect stimulus to further reading.

(10) THE SINFULNESS OF SIN, The Plague of Plagues by Ralph Venning

(11) ALL THINGS FOR GOOD: A Practical Exposition of Romans 8:28 by Thomas Watson

(12) THE GREAT GAIN OF GODLINESS: A Practical Exposition of Malachi 3:14-16 by Thomas Watson

(13) THE LORD'S SUPPER: The Mystery of the Lord's Supper Briefly Explained by Thomas Watson

To Thomas Watson, the Lord’s Supper was a visible sermon, a mirror in which to gaze on the sufferings and death of Christ. ‘God, to help our faith, does not only give us an audible Word, but a visible sign.’ But more than this, the Supper was a time in which to partake of the benefits of Christ’s death by faith, to be fed and cherished by the Lord in his own banqueting house, and to obtain a foretaste of the glory which will be fully realized only in heaven. Watson’s aim was to stimulate greater love to Christ in His people, and to enhance their appreciation of the Supper as a spiritual feast for all believers. His fine exposition shows the rich provision made in the Supper for all who love the Lord, while it also lays bare the emptiness of all mere sacramentalism.

SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY: EXPANDED EDITION: INCLUDING INTRODUCTORY VOLUME TO SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY
LOUIS BERKHOF

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Louis Berkhof’s loyalty to the well-defined lines of the Reformed faith, his concise and compact style and his up-to date treatment have made this work the most important twentieth century compendium of Reformed theology. ‘The work seemed particularly important to me’, writes the author, ‘in view of the widespread doctrinal indifference of the present day, of the resulting superficiality and confusion in the minds of many professing Christians, of the insidious errors that are zealously propagated even from the pulpits, and of the alarming increase of all kinds of sects. If there ever was a time when the church ought to guard her precious heritage, the deposit of the truth that was entrusted to her care, that time is now’.

This expanded edition contains Berkhof’s Introductory Volume, which was designed to be read together with the Systematic Theology itself.

‘Objections have frequently been raised against a systematic presentation of the doctrinal truths of Scripture; and also in the present day some are decidedly averse to it. There seems to be a lurking fear that the more we systematize the truth, the farther we wander from the presentation of it that is found in the Word of God. But there is no danger of this, if the system is not based on the fundamental principles of some erring philosophy, but on the abiding principles of Scripture itself. God certainly sees the truth as a whole, and it is the duty of the theologian to think the truths of God after Him.’

— LOUIS BERKHOF in the Introductory Volume included with this edition.

Professor Berkhof died in 1957, at the age of 83. He was an outstanding American teacher and the author of some 22 books. After two pastorates, he began his long career as professor at Calvin Seminary, Grand Rapids, in 1906. Here he remained for 38 years, devoting his talents and immense stores of knowledge to the training of men for the ministry. His Systematic Theology was his magnum opus, being revised and enlarged during his lifetime until it reached its present final form.

THE IDENTITY AND ATTRIBUTES OF GOD
TERRY L. JOHNSON

The problem identified by the prophet Hosea in his day is still with us today — ‘There is no…knowledge of God in the land’ (Hos. 4:1). We were made to know God. We were saved to know God. Jesus said, ‘This is eternal life that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent’ (John 17:3).

Our chief end and purpose is to know God and thereby to honor and enjoy him. These pages explore God’s identity. The God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is also Creator, Governor, and Redeemer. This one true God is infinitely and unchangingly holy, just, good, and loving. This work is offered with the hope that it might promote the true knowledge of the true God. As Matthew Henry said, ‘To know the perfections of the divine nature, the unsearchable riches of divine grace, to be led into the mystery of our redemption and reconciliation by Christ, this is food; such knowledge as this is a feast to the soul.’

‘It has been said by someone that “the proper study of mankind is man”. I will not oppose the idea, but I believe it is equally true that the proper study of God’s elect is God; the proper study of a Christian is the Godhead. The highest science, the loftiest speculation, the mightiest philosophy, which can ever engage the attention of a child of God, is the name, the nature, the person, the work, the doings, and the existence of the great God whom he calls his Father… I know nothing which can so comfort the soul; so calm the swelling billows of sorrow and grief; so speak peace to the winds of trial, as a devout musing upon the subject of the Godhead.’ — C. H. Spurgeon

‘This book is both profound in its theology, lucid in its exposition, and deeply pastoral and practical in its tone and intention. Anyone wanting to dive into the doctrine of God who wants to see how classical theism connects to everyday Christian life – and what is therefore practically at stake when such theology is abandoned – should read this book.’ — CARL TRUEMAN

THE WORKS OF STEPHEN CHARNOCK (5 Volume Hardcover Set)
STEPHEN CHARNOCK

There were theological and spiritual giants in the earth in the days of the English Puritans, and Stephen Charnock (1628-80) was prominent among them. His Works present a feast of rich teaching and exposition, characterized throughout by sound theology, profound thought, and an imaginative style. The five volumes now reprinted from the classic nineteenth-century Nichol edition contain a total of more than 2,800 pages and 64 distinct discourses or sermons. Of these, only one was published during the author’s lifetime, all the rest being edited from his manuscripts and published by his friends, Richard Adams and Edward Veal, after Charnock’s death in 1680. While expounding timeless truth, Charnock’s discourses are strikingly relevant to contemporary discussions.

Then, as now, there were many willing to declare their atheism publicly, who would ‘not only say it in their hearts, but publish it with their lips, and boast that they have shaken off those shackles which bind other men’s consciences’. However, ‘every atheist is a grand fool. If he were not a fool he would not imagine a thing so contrary to…the rational dictates of his own soul, and contrary to the testimony of every creature and link in the chain of creation.’ In the words of J.I. Packer, ‘Charnock has no desire to speculate, but only to declare the works and ways, the nature and character, of the God of the Bible.’

VOLUME ONE contains a helpful introduction to Charnock’s life and work by James McCosh, and the first eight discourses on The Existence and Attributes of God, opening with ‘A Discourse of Divine Providence,’ based on 2 Chronicles 16:9. In this Charnock sets forth the doctrine of providence with great clarity, and then applies it to instruct, comfort, and exhort the people of God.

VOLUME TWO continues and concludes Charnock’s magnum opus, ‘A Discourse on the Existence and Attributes of God’ with the remaining six discourses. Topics include: the existence of God; practical atheism; God’s being a Spirit; spiritual worship; the eternity of God; his immutability; his omnipresence; his knowledge; his wisdom; his power; his holiness; his goodness; his dominion; and his patience. Each discourse first expounds, then applies, the text of Scripture on which it is based.

VOLUME THREE concerns the work of regeneration, by which spiritually dead sinners are raised to new life in Christ. It is perhaps surprising that present-day Christians seem so often to be confused about what it means to be born again. Whatever the reasons for this confusion, the fault cannot be laid at the door of previous generations of preachers and writers, particularly Puritans like Charnock, who took immense pains to search into and explain the doctrine from Scripture.

VOLUME FOUR contains fifteen further discourses of primary importance to Christians in every age. The first six discourses – all on texts from the Gospel of John – focus on the knowledge of God in Christ as the only way to eternal life and happiness, showing that true and saving knowledge of God is only in and by Christ, that conviction of sin by the Spirit of God is the way to this knowledge, and that to remain in unbelief is to remain in misery under the wrath of God. The Lord’s Supper and related matters form the subject of a second group of discourses.

VOLUME FIVE contains a further nineteen discourses. By way of contrast with the earlier volumes – most of which are based on texts from the New Testament – five of the discourses here draw on texts from the Old Testament Scriptures. Many of the topics addressed are of perennial interest to all Christians: the necessity of Christ’s death, and the necessity of his exaltation; Christ’s intercession; God in Christ as the object of faith; afflictions; mortification; the stability of the church; delight in prayer; the sins of the regenerate; man’s enmity to God; and the pardon of sin.

Author

Stephen Charnock (1628-1680) was educated at Cambridge University after which he lectured at Oxford University. He was appointed chaplain to the Governor of Ireland, Oliver Cromwell's son Henry in 1655, where he soon gained a reputation for preaching. In 1675, years after the fall of Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth, Charnock became a Presbyterian Minister in London. His works, mostly published posthumously, have the characteristic Puritan concern for central gospel themes and consistent application of Biblical texts to practical problems.

ENDORSEMENTS

“Theology is not just for big people! From our very first days, it’s critical that we begin to learn about God—who he is, what he is like, and what he has done to save us in Jesus Christ. In Big Theology for Little Hearts, Devon and Jessica Provencher have provided an incredibly helpful resource for teaching your children about God and his gospel. With bold illustrations, childlike language, and beautiful simplicity, they faithfully unfold the theological truths that shape our Christian hope. If you’re a parent—or even if you’re not!—these little books will be a blessing and help to you.” --Greg Gilbert, Senior Pastor, Third Avenue Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky

“We love board books that help our littlest children easily understand the deep truths of the gospel. With beautiful illustrations and simple definitions for theological terms, the Big Theology for Little Hearts board books are a great resource for parents who want to lay a biblical foundation for their young children.” --Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler, Cofounders, Risen Motherhood

“Delightful pictures, clear style, and faithful theology! Big Theology for Little Hearts will engage our children and launch us into teaching our little ones about our Lord.” --Christopher W. Morgan, Dean of the School of Christian Ministries and Professor of Theology, California Baptist University

“Devon and Jessica have done an outstanding job of creating an engaging series for children that plainly sets forth the gospel. These books will surely serve to clarify thoughts that little ones are formulating and will lead to helpful conversations along the way. The words are plain even as the concepts are profound. The illustrations are winsome and clear. I look forward to reading this series to my grandchildren. What a worthy addition to the libraries of all who seek to teach big truths to children!” --Mary K. Mohler, Director, Seminary Wives Institute, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Growing in Gratitude

“Devon and Jessica have provided a tool for parents to introduce their children to attributes of God and deep theological truths without leaning on cliches like ’the old man upstairs.’ And while Jessica hasn’t tried to draw a picture of the eternal, immortal, invisible God, she has drawn captivating images that will give little hearts memorable concepts of who this God reveals himself to be throughout Scripture. I couldn’t be more excited to use these books in my family and pass them on to other families in my church.” --Brian Zunigha, Elder, Redeemer Baptist Church; Director of Discipleship Ministries, California Baptist University

SHORT STUDIES IN SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY: Glorification, Scripture, Trinity, Person of Christ, Attributes of God, Faithful Theology, Justification, Atonement, Holy Spirit & Predestination
Graham Cole, Mark Thompson, Scott Swain, Stephen Wellum, Gerald Bray, Thomas Schreiner, Jeremy Treat, Fred Sanders, Andrew David Naselli

The ancient Greek thinker Heraclitus reputedly said that the thinker has to listen to the essence of things. A series of theological studies dealing with the traditional topics that make up systematic theology needs to do just that. Accordingly, in each of these studies, a theologian addresses the essence of a doctrine. This series thus aims to present short studies in theology that are attuned to both the Christian tradition and contemporary theology in order to equip the church to faithfully understand, love, teach, and apply what God has revealed in Scripture about a variety of topics. What may be lost in comprehensiveness can be gained through what John Calvin, in the dedicatory epistle of his commentary on Romans, called “lucid brevity.” Of course, a thorough study of any doctrine will be longer rather than shorter, as there are two millennia of confession, discussion, and debate with which to interact. As a result, a short study needs to be more selective but deftly so. Thankfully, the contributors to this series have the ability to be brief yet accurate. The key aim is that the simpler is not to morph into the simplistic. The test is whether the topic of a short study, when further studied in depth, requires some unlearning to take place. The simple can be amplified. The simplistic needs to be corrected. As editors, we believe that the volumes in this series pass that test.

While the specific focus varies, each volume (1) introduces the doctrine, (2) sets it in context, (3) develops it from Scripture, (4) draws the various threads together, and (5) brings it to bear on the Christian life. It is our prayer, then, that this series will assist the church to delight in her triune God by thinking his thoughts—which he has graciously revealed in his written word, which testifies to his living Word, Jesus Christ—after him in the powerful working of his Spirit.

(1) GLORIFICATION: An Introduction by Graham Cole

How Sanctification Transforms Christians Into Glorified Beings

Facing sin, suffering, and an uncertain future, it’s easy to become pessimistic, but believers in Christ know the best is yet to come. God promises that one day he will redeem his image bearers and renew the earth. Few books are written on the doctrine of glorification, but its promise of restoration brings urgent hope for Christ followers.

In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, Graham A. Cole examines the concept of divine glory as well as God’s plan for redeeming individual believers, the church, and the universe. Identifying two phases of glorification—one in this life and a final transformation into Christlikeness—Cole defines the role of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the sanctification process. Through careful study of Scripture, he shows Christians how their future identity as glorified beings should impact their perspective today.

(2) THE DOCTRINE OF SCRIPTURE: An Introduction by Mark Thompson

A Clear and Concise Exploration of the Christian Doctrine of Scripture

The Bible is the written word of the living God. He speaks through this word, working in and through human agents as he reveals himself to his people. His word is trustworthy, yet many Christians struggle to articulate why they believe that to be true. Centered in the words of Scripture and especially the teaching of Jesus himself, this volume unpacks the doctrine of Scripture as taught by the church through the ages, helping to strengthen readers’ confidence in God’s word.

Despite the challenges that are often leveled against the Bible, Thompson clearly articulates what Jesus taught about the Scriptures, how God speaks to his people through the written word, the crucial work of the Holy Spirit to apply the word, and the vital attributes of Scripture—its clarity, truthfulness, sufficiency, and efficacy. Readers will find encouragement to walk according to the word and to delight in the God who speaks.

(3) THE TRINITY: An Introduction by Scott Swain

The Trinity is one of the most essential doctrines of the Christian faith.

The eternal God existing as three distinct persons—Father, Son, and Spirit—can be difficult to comprehend. While Christians often struggle to find the right words to describe this union, the Bible gives clarity concerning the triune God’s being and activity in nature (creation), grace (redemption), and glory (reward). In this concise volume, theologian Scott Swain examines the doctrine of the Trinity, presenting its biblical foundations, systematic-theological structure, and practical relevance for the church today.

(4) THE PERSON OF CHRIST: An Introduction by Stephen Wellum

“From beginning to end, Scripture unveils from shadow to reality that Jesus is God the Son incarnate.”

Some people think of Jesus as a great prophet or a wise philosopher; others see him as an important religious leader or even a revolutionary. In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, Stephen Wellum challenges these claims as he argues for the divinity of Jesus according to Scripture and in line with creedal Christianity. In this brief introduction, we are invited to rejoice in the centrality of Christ—who as both God and man reconciles us to God.

(5) THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD: An Introduction by Gerald Bray

How can we (created beings) know God (the Creator)?

Throughout history, the church has recognized the importance of studying and understanding God’s attributes. As the Creator of all things, God is unique and cannot be compared to any of his creatures, so to know him, believers turn to the pages of Scripture. In The Attributes of God, renowned theologian Gerald Bray leads us on an exploration of God’s being, his essential attributes, his relational attributes, and the relevance of his attributes to our thinking, lives, and worship. As we better understand God’s attributes, we will learn to delight in who God is and how he has made himself known to us in Scripture.

(6) FAITHFUL THEOLOGY: An Introduction by Graham A. Cole

Everyone has thoughts about God. But how do we know if our thoughts are true?

If we want to know the truth about God, we need a sound approach to incorporating what the whole Bible teaches. In this concise introduction to systematic theology, theologian Graham A. Cole explores how we move from Scripture to doctrine in order to shape what we believe, what we value, and how we live. He shows us the importance of having the right method: rooted in the word of God, consistent with church history, in the context of a broken world, dependent on divine wisdom, and ultimately aiming at pure worship.

(7) JUSTIFICATION: An Introduction by Thomas Schreiner

A Clear and Concise Exploration of the Doctrine of Justification from Thomas R. Schreiner

When we see the fallenness of the world, it is often challenging to understand how sinners can stand before a holy God, but the gospel gives hope—justification that comes through Jesus Christ. This doctrine is essential to the gospel but has sparked countless academic and theological disagreements throughout church history, even contributing to the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century.

In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, Thomas R. Schreiner examines the biblical and historical background of the doctrine of justification. Schreiner explores it throughout church history and analyzes both the Old and New Testament teachings. By examining the relationship between justification and other doctrines of salvation—such as redemption, reconciliation, adoption, and sanctification—Schreiner shows how it gives peace, assurance, and joy to sinners through Jesus and hope for life today.

(8) THE ATONEMENT: An Introduction by Jeremy Treat

A Concise Introduction to the Doctrine of the Atonement

The atonement is central to Christian theology and essential for following Jesus. In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, pastor Jeremy Treat explains what Scripture teaches about the atonement and how it impacts one’s daily life.

Treat demonstrates that the death of Christ is a multi-dimensional work within the story of the kingdom of God. While the accomplishments of the cross are unending (including forgiveness, victory, and renewal), the heart of the cross is substitution—Jesus dying on behalf of sinners. Christ’s atoning work reconciles believers to God and to one another, calling them to a life of obedience. This book presents a kingdom-framed, substitution-centered, Trinitarian, integrated, communal, and life-changing approach to the doctrine of atonement.

(9) THE HOLY SPIRIT: An Introduction by Fred Sanders

Understanding the Work and Power of the Holy Spirit in Scripture

Though he is right at the heart of everything in theology and faith, the Holy Spirit can be hard to focus on. In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, Fred Sanders teaches his readers how to hold a proper biblical understanding of both the person and power of the Holy Spirit.

New believers and seasoned saints alike will learn about the Holy Spirit’s work in the cosmos, salvation history, and God’s plans for the future. To accomplish this, Sanders explains the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in relation to the Trinity, the Old Testament, and the New Testament. In this short introduction readers will gain a better theological grasp of the Holy Spirit and instruction on why he matters for the Christian life.

(10) PREDESTINATION: An Introduction by Andrew David Naselli

A Concise and Systematic Exploration of the Doctrine of Predestination

How can God choose to save some and eternally punish others? What about my loved ones who are not believers? For many, contemplating predestination brings about fear, trepidation, controversy, and emotional exhaustion, making it a difficult topic to study—let alone view as a blessing.

This addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series carefully examines God’s word to answer 15 commonly asked questions regarding the doctrines of election and reprobation. With helpful visuals, key definitions, answer summaries, and prayer responses, this concise guide is perfect for all believers who want to discover and delight in what God has revealed throughout Scripture. Readers will not only learn how God saves his people from their sins, but will be stirred to respond to him in worship.

THE CHILD'S PREACHER: A Series of Sermons on Systematic Theology for the Young
Alexander Fletcher, J.C. Ryle, John Crawshaw, Lyman A. Eddy, and Lowther J. Barrington with Introductory Lesson by C.H. Spurgeon

"THESE ARE SOLID AND EDIFYING, AND AT THE SAME TIME VIVACIOUS AND LIFE-LIKE ADDRESSES." -the Editor

Every family should have a copy of this marvelous volume of over 450 pages containing 33 sermons intended for the instruction of the heart and mind of children within the household and the church. Alexander Fletcher (1787-1860) was known as "the Children's Friend" and the man chosen to perform the marriage of Charles Haddon Spurgeon and Susannah Thompson. John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) was the gifted Bishop of Liverpool and author of numerous books, including his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, intended to be used for Family Worship. Although not as well-known, Revs. Lowther Barrington, John Crawshaw, and Lyman A. Eddy were also men gifted and faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and especially concerned about the sound instruction of the little lambs of Christ's flock.

The Editor wrote the following in his Preface: "One important object of the present volume is to furnish practical hints, which may serve to encourage yonng ministers, and others who imagine it a difficult thing to preach to children, to make the attempt more frequently. It will be found that the variety of texts and subjects which may be adapted to children's capacities is almost endless.

The great requisites, in order to interest children, are plainness of speech and fertility of illustration. When these are employed, low and silly expressions are worse than useless, and trifling thoughts and foolish imaginations are a positive offense. It is perfectly practicable to adapt every essential, or strictly important religious topic, not only to the capacity, but even to the tastes of children; yea, to interest them deeply in such suhjects, and at the same time to preserve dignity of expression and purity of thought. How vastly important, therefore, is it for every minister to qualify himself for, and to habituate himself to, preaching the Gospel to children."

Rev. Lowther Barrington, preacher of the opening sermon of the book, was the author of a book by the same title. Of that book we are told, "These are a series of little sermons to children, delivered at a separate service instituted for them. They are, in our opinion, quite perfect in their way: we can hardly lay down the volume. Let all mothers by all means get this little tome, and read it to their children."

DIVINE PROVIDENCE
Stephen Charnock

This is surely one of the finest works ever written on God's divine providence. Charnock covers every aspect of divine providence which one might imagine and many which would never occur to us today. This is a work which if studied and pondered will cause one to break out in praise to our glorious God who controls all things by His divine providence. Those who have loved Charnock's brilliant work The Existence and Attributes of God will be delighted to learn that this was originally a part of that work, and is now back in print again after over 140 years. Includes a biographical sketch which was a part of the original work.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

An Introduction to Charnock and his Works by Rev. James M'Cosh

To the Reader by Richard Adams and Edward Veal

A Discourse of Divine Providence being an Exposition of 2nd Chronicles 16:9

"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in behalf of them whose heart is perfect towards him."

I. A Description of God's Providence

II. The End of God's Providence

“Today the sovereign hand of God is not understood, believed in, or welcomed. I urge people everywhere to get back to the Bible’s most serious teaching: God’s providence. To read this excellent book by the eminent Puritan author Stephen Charnock is to take the first step toward living a life pleasing to our great God and to entering into the happiness of heaven when our brief earthly lives are finished.” —Maurice Roberts, Retired Minister, Free Church of Scotland

Stephen Charnock (1628–80) was an English Puritan thinker known for his practical preaching and ability to explain deep doctrinal concepts clearly and persuasively; he also had an interest in physics. He served as a pastor in Dublin, Ireland, for several years before political and religious upheaval resulted in his ejection from pulpit ministry in 1660, along with more than two thousand other nonconformists. Although forbidden to preach publicly, he continued to study and write for fifteen years. When government restrictions eased, he co-pastored a church in London with Thomas Watson from 1675 until his death. He left behind “considerable treatises on some of the most important points of religion” that were collected soon afterward and published posthumously.

"Do you yearn to know God better? Read this book thoughtfully and prayerfully. "Our God" may well be Octavius Winslow's very best book, for what better subject can a believer desire to meditate on than the character of the triune God whom he loves, worships and fears? And who is better suited to expound the grandeur and to stammer about the infinity of such a subject than this author who always seems to write profoundly and winsomely about the most sacred themes with remark-able reverence and a commanding flow of language? This warmly experimential treatment of the attributes of God engages the mind and heart as no other that I have read on this glorious subject. Here is angel's food." Joel R. Beeke

THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD: Classic Volume
A.W. PINK

The timeless appeal of this classic book, written by a preacher with a worldwide ministry during the first half of the twentieth century, demonstrates the deep hunger for a saving knowledge of God present in each generation. Arthur Pink sought to give readers not just a theoretical knowledge of God but pointed them toward a personal relationship of yielding to him and living according to his biblical precepts. Pink's book explores attributes such as God's decrees, foreknowledge, sovereignty, holiness, grace, and mercy, among many others, all packaged in a style especially useful for pastors, teachers, and Bible students. Our God who is above all names cannot be found through human searching alone, Pink teaches, but can be known only as he is revealed by the Holy Spirit through his living Word.

REFORMATION HEROES & PURITAN HEROES
Joel Beeke & Diana Kleyn; and Joel Beeke & Glenda Mathes

REFORMATION HEROES

The Reformation did not happen instantaneously; it was something God patiently arranged over a number of years. As you read this book, you will learn how the Lord used some people to plant the seeds of church reform long before October 31, 1517, when Martin Luther published his ninety-five theses. Luther's story is well-known; we trust you will find it interesting and instructive to read about him and about forty others (John Knox, Peter Martyr Vermigli, Zacharias Ursinus, Willem Teellinck, etc.) who contributed to the Reformation - some well known and others not so - most of whom are Reformation heroes. To provide a more full picture of the many sided Reformation, chapters are also included on the Anabaptist and Counter Reformation movements. The book concludes with a brief summary of the influence of the Reformation in different areas of life.

"I hope this book will help awaken youth in America to the vital truths set forth so clearly and boldly by the historic heroes of the Reformation." - Dr. R.C. Sproul

"The authors are to be warmly commended for giving our young people fresh access to the riches of the Reformation, namely, God's saints who did such great exploits for the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ." - Dr. Michael Haykin

"Although my wife and I read this with our 3 children (14, 12, 8) we found it to be aptly written at a level and in a fashion that was not condescending nor lofty, and interesting for us and other adults who may be around as well. The authors "pull no punches"; and while some details are grisly, they communicate it with tact, consideration and respect.

We are all sheep for the slaughter and are poured out as drink offerings...It is good to remember those who trod before, their example and the depth of their love for our Savior; that we may be bold and ready ourselves, to go and to do as He leads." - a satisfied customer

PURITAN HEROES (brand new title in December 2018)

Who were the Puritans, and why are they important? What can we learn from them today? The Puritan movement began in England during the sixteenth century and continued all the way into the early eighteenth century. Although the Church of England was formed as a result of the Reformation, the Puritans believed it needed much more reform. Puritan Heroes is a beautifully illustrated book that gives the reader an idea of what the Puritan movement was about and offers a glimpse into the lives of more than twenty of its most well-known leaders (among them William Perkins, Richard Sibbes, Thomas Goodwin, Anne Bradstreet, and Jonathan Edwards). The book concludes with ten important lessons readers can learn from the Puritans and study questions to help them retain these fascinating stories and assist them in applying the lessons to their lives. It also features a bibliography to encourage further study in greater depth, as well as a glossary and timeline to help readers understand historical context. Written for children and young people, it will prove a suitable introduction to the Puritans for adults as well.

THOMAS WATSON PURITAN PAPERBACKS (two at this time)
Thomas Watson

WE NEED SAY NOTHING TO COMMEND THE GREAT THOMAS WATSON. WE ARE FEATURING SOME OF HIS MOST POWERFUL WORKS ON THIS PAGE. CONSIDER THE INCREDIBLE VALUE OF THESE BOOKS.

(1) THE GREAT GAIN OF GODLINESS: or Religion Our True Interest

(2) THE GODLY MAN'S PICTURE: Drawn with a Scripture Pencil

Few preachers in the Puritan era (or any other period of church history) match Thomas Watson for his ability to combine rich spirituality, nourishing doctrine and sane wisdom with fascinating illustration and a pleasant style. Watson is remembered chiefly for his posthumously published Body of Practical Divinity (reprinted by Solid Ground in One Volume). But his extant sermons also include this marvelous series on the character of the Christian – The Godly Man’s Picture. It is, as C.H. Spurgeon said of his other work, ‘a happy union of sound doctrine, heart-searching experience and practical wisdom’.

Watson is always the essence of sanity and reliability. But in addition, this work shows how attractive the grace of God is. Christians of all stages, reading it for the first time, will feel as if they have entered the gallery of a great portrait painter. As his sub-title suggests, Watson works with ‘a Scripture pencil’ in this priceless sketch of the true believer.

SINCLAIR FERGUSON said, "If a poll were to be taken of Puritan writers who have been especially helpful to Christians in the past fifty years, Thomas Watson's name would undoubtedly appear frequently. His exposition is as attractive as it is easy to follow, and as worship-producing as edifying."

(3) THE DOCTRINE OF REPENTANCE: A Classic Treatise on a Vital but Oft-Neglected Subject

A good case could be made out for believing that ‘repentance’ is one of the least used words in the Christian church today. In a world that will not tolerate the mention of sin, and in churches where it has been defined only in sociological terms, the biblical teaching on repentance has inevitably been ignored.

Knowing what repentance is, and actually repenting are essential to true Christianity. Jesus Christ himself said that if we do not repent, we will perish! It is vital, therefore, to read and study what Scripture has to say about this theme.

Few better guides have existed in this or any other area of spiritual experience than Thomas Watson. He was a master of both Scripture and the human heart, and wrote with a simplicity and directness that keeps his work fresh and powerful for the twenty-first century.

(4) THE LORD'S SUPPER: A Mirror to Gaze on the Sufferings and Death of Christ

PRACTICAL ATHEISM: The Battle of Every Heart and The Plague of Every Nation
Stephen Charnock

This sermon is taken from Charnock's classic EXISTENCE & ATTRIBUTES OF GOD.

Charnock demonstrates in a most convincing way, that Practical Atheism is as widespread as the heart of every man and nation. You will soon be lead to see that the problem addressed in this discourse is not "out there" but "in here", that is, within our sin-stained heart and soul. This treatise is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the plague that is spreading throughout the world, a plague more deadly than any that has ever attacked our globe.

"Atheism in the Westen world wears the clothing of evolutionary humanism. We are asked to believe that everything in this infinitely complex creation happened by chance. Stephen Charnock explains why atheism is foolishness. He does this very well. It is splendid to have his work in print." Erroll Hulse Associate pastor Leeds Reformed Baptist Church

There were theological and spiritual giants in the earth in the days of the English Puritans, and Stephen Charnock (1628-80) was prominent among them. His Works present a feast of rich teaching and exposition, characterized throughout by sound theology, profound thought, and an imaginative style. While expounding timeless truth, Charnock's discourses are strikingly relevant to contemporary discussions. Then, as now, there were many willing to declare their atheism publicly, who would "not only say it in their hearts, but publish it with their lips, and boast that they have shaken off those shackles which bind other men's consciences". However, "every atheist is a grand fool. If he were not a fool he would not imagine a thing so contrary to...the rational dictates of his own soul, and contrary to the testimony of every creature and link in the chain of creation."

In the words of J.I. Packer, "Charnock has no desire to speculate, but only to declare the works and ways, the nature and character, of the God of the Bible."

SEVEN BRAND NEW BANNER OF TRUTH PAPERBACKS
Horatius Bonar; John Owen; Maurice Roberts; R.C. Sproul; Iain Wright; Thomas Brooks; Octavius Winslow

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO BE ABLE TO OFFER SEVEN BRAND NEW PAPERBACK TITLES FROM BANNER OF TRUTH,

(1) GOD IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN WE CAN IMAGINE: Thirty-one Meditations on the Greatness of God by Iain Wright

‘Right away as I began reading these devotionals it struck me that they are much like Spurgeon’s, and that for one simple reason: Iain (like Spurgeon) has a mind and heart saturated with the whole content of Scripture.’ — G.I. WILLIAMSON

How much can we know about God?

By definition, the finite mind cannot comprehend the infinite. As soon as we begin to think we have understood something of the love and grace of God we soon learn from Scripture that his love and grace are even greater.

The meditations in God is Always Better Than We Can Imagine are intended to help us come to Scripture with the mindset that, no matter how much we have learned in our private studies, or heard in sermons and lectures, God is always immeasurably greater than our imagination has allowed.

(2) SEARCHING OUR HEARTS IN DIFFICULT TIMES by John Owen

O that we might advise one another as to what to do; to help one another to recover from our weaknesses!’

Following Jesus is not easy. It involves self-denial, daily cross-bearing, and lifelong obedience. Salvation is promised to the one who ‘endures to the end.’ Christians need much encouragement, especially in ‘difficult times’. This the Lord supplies through pastors who love him and care for his people.

John Owen was such a pastor. One way he sought to help his fellow-believers was to hold occasional meetings for spiritual conference and fellowship at which various topics were addressed and discussed, with Owen providing a concluding summary of the proceedings.

The short chapters in Searching Our Hearts in Difficult Times contain a number of Owen’s talks and sermons on a wide range of subjects which are as relevant to Christians today as they were to believers some three and a half centuries ago.

Abridged and made easy to read.

(3) MEETING JESUS: The 'I Am' Sayings of Christ by R.C. Sproul

Who is Jesus? Nearly every adult person has formed some opinion of him. These opinions may be superficial, uninformed, or downright heretical.

But does it really matter what we think about Jesus? After all, he was a man who lived nearly 2,000 years ago, so how relevant can he be to people in the twenty-first century?

The answer to that question ultimately rests upon whether what Jesus said about himself is true.

In this short book, R. C. Sproul looks at seven sayings of Jesus recorded in the Gospel of John which reveal his true identity and teach us the truth about him. By considering these ‘I am’ sayings we meet Jesus and learn just how relevant he truly is.

(4) THE GREAT TRANSFORMATION: The Sanctification and Glorification of the Believer by Maurice Roberts

The eight chapters of The Great Transformation bring before the reader the sanctification and glorification of the believer in Jesus. The author, a pastor of many years, explains, illustrates and applies these doctrines with fresh insights into the daily experiences and struggles of the Christian. He shows how they are a great encouragement to God’s beloved people especially when living in sad and difficult times in which sin and evil abound. While it is true that God’s children must go through many trials and discouragements in this world, it is also true their ‘light affliction is but for a moment.’ All true believers have left behind the state of sin and death; what they now look forward to is the blessed change — the great transformation — from grace to glory.

It is the author’s wish and prayer that readers of this book will be refreshed in their souls, encouraged in their faith, and reinvigorated in their service as they lift up their eyes to future comforts and joys in eternity.

(5) THE EVERLASTING RIGHTEOUSNESS: How Shall a Man be Just with God? by Horatius Bonar

‘Written in 1874 and republished by The Banner of Truth in 1993, The Everlasting Righteousness stands (in my opinion) as the greatest book on the importance of the Cross and our imputed righteousness. It is clear, concise, devotional and beautifully written…. If you are looking for a readable book that exalts the Cross-centered life, relishes in the righteousness found only in the substitution of the Lamb, and magnifies the worth and beauty of Christ, turn to a talented hymn writer. Horatius Bonar has given us a clear book of great value on the central doctrine of the church. His poetic style will warm the heart after multiple readings and his clarity will equip the preacher with a lifetime of precious quotes.’ — TONY REINKE

How Shall Man Be Just with God? asks the subtitle of The Everlasting Righteousness. Here, indeed, is the greatest question a man may ask, and in this brief devotional study Horatius Bonar gives us the answer, an answer not to be found in man himself, but in God and the provision he has made in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Here is a book which delights in ‘the righteousness found only in the substitution of the Lamb, and magnifies the worth and beauty of Christ… Horatius Bonar has given us a clear book of great value on the central doctrine of the church. His poetic style will warm the heart…and his clarity will equip the preacher with a lifetime of precious quotes.’

(6) AN ARK FOR ALL GOD'S NOAHS: IN A GLOOMY STORMY DAY by Thomas Brooks

We live in difficult days and in trying times. This book, with its quaint yet vivid title, points us to the One in whom Christian men and women have always found the strength to persevere come what may. Taking Lamentations 3:24 as his starting-point – ‘The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him,’ – Thomas Brooks expounds the attributes of God with the aim of comforting those who have felt not only the stresses and strains of daily life but also the shearing pain of loss in its various forms.

(7) PERSONAL DECLENSION AND REVIVAL OF RELIGION IN THE SOUL by Octavius Winslow

Many who are conscious that their spiritual experience and vitality have sadly declined have only a hazy notion of the nature and causes of their condition. The kind of searching analysis which would help to clarify their thoughts and concentrate their sense of conviction is largely absent from the contemporary pulpit and from the Christian literature of the day.

But such help is available, and can be found in works like Octavius Winslow’s Personal Declension and Revival. It discusses the areas of life in which backsliding takes place, examines the consequences, and in the concluding chapters points to the Lord who is the restorer and keeper of his people.

The passage of time since this book was first published in 1841 has not diminished its value, and the fact that it has been frequently reprinted eloquently testifies to its continuing spiritual usefulness.
