"RYLE IS MAGNIFICENT! There's no other word for it, - are you brave enough to face hard-hitting truth and have God search your heart on things that matter most? Then Ryle is the man for you! Do yourself a favor - read this and think about what you read." - J.I. Packer
"I heartily endorse it, and strongly commend it to both Christian leaders and fathers, not to mention older and younger men alike." - John MacArthur, Jr.
"Thoughts for Young Men is pure spiritual gold." - Jerry Bridges
"Thoughts for Young Men abounds in reliable counsel and says - with a rare combination of seriousness and graciousness - the very things we need to hear. Young men, for whom it was written, will find it invaluable; but all Christians, men or women, young or old, can read it with lasting benefit. It deserves to be widely read and circulated, and will do spiritual good to every reader." - Sinclair Ferguson
"THOUGHTS FOR YOUNG MEN is wise, frank, warm-hearted and hard-hitting. I hope that many, many young men will study it, and that parents and teachers will also read it in order to clarify their vision of what Christian young men should be. Although written over a century ago, the message is right up-to-date." - John R.W. Stott
"Out of Ryle's dealings with many young people came one of the most important and relevant things he ever wrote, his Thoughts for Young Men. The reading of this material could well be a turning point in the lives of many today across the world." - Iain Murray
"I am happy to commend the re-publication of Thoughts for Young Men." - Leon Morris
"Dear young friends, if you value your souls you will read Ryle's 'Thoughts for Young Men.' He did not know it but he was writing more for you than for his own youth." - John Gerstner
"Thoughts is sound, profitable reading. I commend it to young men everywhere." - James Montgomery Boice
"I am very thankful for your bringing into print once again Ryle's excellent book 'Thoughts for Young Men.' May it have a wide audience of those with ears to hear." - Elisabeth Elliot

click for details | | THE CHILD'S BOOK ON THE FALL Thomas H. Gallaudet
Thomas H. Gallaudet (1787-1851) was the Apostle to the Deaf in the United States. He devoted his life to teach the underprivileged the truths of God's Word. He wrote dozens and dozens of books using simple, straightforward language for children, young people and adults.
"No other part of the Bible can be properly understood if Genesis 1-3 is misunderstood. The fall of our first parents into sin was both tragic and cataclysmic. The need and nature of the salvation that God provided in Jesus Christ cannot be appreciated where the events in the garden of Eden are underestimated. Children, as well as adults, need to learn this. Thomas Galluadet's book explains humanity's fall into sin in simple, clear language. It is designed for children but will help anyone think more carefully about what really happened when Adam and Eve turned away from God and plunged the human race into sin. I highly recommend it." -Tom Ascol
THE FALL OF MAN is a plain explanation of the origin of sin in the universe. Gallaudet leads children by the hand into the garden of Eden to help them see how our first parents fell into rebellion against their great and gracious Creator. The book concludes with a passionate appeal to the reader to "Go to Christ" who alone can save.
This book can be read to and by children 6-12 years old.

 | | | | THE BACKSLIDER: His Nature, Symptoms and Recovery Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) with a Biographical Sketch by Dr. Michael Haykin
THIS IS THE BOOK THAT NEEDS TO BE READ BY THOSE WHO ARE RESTING ON A "DECISION" THEY CLAIM THEY MADE ABOUT CHRIST, BUT HAVE FAILED TO FOLLOW THAT "DECISION" WITH A LIFE THAT REFLECTS THAT PROFESSION.
 TABLE OF CONTENTS
Biographical Sketch of Fuller by Dr. Michael Haykin
Original Introduction by John Angell James
 Preface by Andrew Fuller
 1. On the General Nature of Backsliding
 2. The Symptoms of a Backsliding Spirit
 3. The Injurious and Dangerous Effects of Sin Lying upon the Conscience Unlamented
 4. On the Means of Recovery

"Andrew Fuller was, in my opinion, one of the greatest theologians, which modern times, or any times have produced, and his writings are an almost inexhaustible mine of doctrinal, practical, and experimental truth, which every Christian and especially every minister, would do well to explore. No man better understood the bible, or the human heart both in its un-renewed and its regenerate state. Among all his various practical treatises, there are few, if any, of greater value than that on BACKSLIDING. Like a most skillful physician, he explains, with singular ability, the nature of the disease, lays down the symptoms of it, and prescribes the method of recovery." - John Angell James
"Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) was an outstanding figure with qualities that make him one of the most attractive figures in Baptist history. Many in his day could echo the words of his very close friend William Carey , 'I loved him.' The Backslider: or an Inquiry into the Nature, Symptoms, and Effects of Religious Declension, with the Means of Recovery was originally published in 1801. Fuller's work, though, has stood the test of time and well merits the description by John Ryland as 'an invaluable piece of practical divinity.'" - Michael Haykin

 | | | | THE SECRET OF COMMUNION WITH GOD: How to Begin the Day, Spend the Day and End the Day with God Matthew Henry
One of the finest, but little known, treatises on the godly life ever written, by the author of the justly popular Matthew Henry's Commentary. This little gem teaches how to begin the day with God, how to spend the day with God, and how to end the day with God.
"Matthew Henry is most pious and pithy, sound and sensible, suggestive and sober, terse and trustworthy. You will find him to be glittering with metaphors, rich in analogies, overflowing with illustrations, and superabundant in reflections." - C.H. Spurgeon
"Follow Henry's counsel and your practice of prayer will be changed forever, and thus also your experience of communion with God. For as Henry rightly says, 'those who live without prayer, live without God in the world.'" - Dr. Ligon Duncan
""The way we maintain our prayer lives is the great practical fundamental of our Christianity. This was the strength of the English Puritans. Here in this work by Matthew Henry we have the nitty-gritty." - Erroll Hulse

click for details | | THE GRACE OF REPENTANCE Sinclair Ferguson
THE GRACE OF REPENTANCE by Sinclair Ferguson
Out of the Protestant Reformation came several important doctrines, including a renewed understanding of repentance. Instead of viewing repentance as a one-time confession, the reformers began to teach what the Bible teaches; that it is both radical and perpetual.
In this redesigned, concise volume Sinclair Ferguson examines how the Bible defines repentance and how the doctrine has fared in today's evangelical churches. He finds many sorely lacking in proper theological understanding: "Once again we need to proclaim the full-orbed doctrine of repentance within an evangelical world that has begun to manifest symptoms of the same medieval sickness." This reversion to a kind of medieval theology includes the viewing of repentance as an isolated, emotional event.
Ferguson combats this trend by pointing us toward repentance in the Bible. As we embrace continual confession and turning from sin, we will find our spiritual walk transformed and our fellowship with Christ renewed. This is an important book for every Christian who wants the grace of repentance to regain rightful prominence in evangelical churches, and in their own lives as well.
Sinclair B. Ferguson is the senior minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina, and professor of systematic theology at Redeemer Seminary in Dallas. He is the author of several books, the most recent being In Christ Alone: Reflections on the Heart of the Gospel, and Westminster Directory of Public Worship (co-authored with Mark Dever). Sinclair and his wife, Dorothy, have four grown children.

 | | | | THE JOHN THE BAPTIST OF THE REFORMATION: A Memoir of John Huss, the Bohemian Reformer and Martyr Translated from the German by Thomas O. Summers with an Introductory Note by J.H. Merle d'Aubigne
John Huss (a.k.a. Jan Hus) is regarded to be one of the earliest known religious thinkers and reformers in the world. A philosopher and a Master at Charles University (Prague), Huss was greatly influenced by the writings and teachings of John Wyclife. He made a number of followers during his time, who came to be known as Hussites. Reformers, in the later years, looked up to Huss for his unswerving commitment in the face of the church's cunning brutality, due to which he had to face extreme consequences. Condemning Huss' uprising, the Church first excommunicated him and then burned him to death, after an unfair trial.
This brief account of his life will serve as a wonderful introduction to the life of this great hero of the faith. Despite incredible cruelty that lasted for many months, even some of his enemies acknowledged his humility and godliness. This book would be very useful to use in Family Worship as the chapters are all brief and to the point.
Famous Church Historian J.H. Merle d'Aubigne said the following about Huss - "John Huss preached in Bohemia a century before Luther preached in Saxony. He seems to have penetrated deeper than his predecessors into the essence of Christian truth. He prayed to Christ for grace to glory only in his cross and the the inestimable humiliation of his sufferings. But his attacks were directed less against the errors of the Romish church than against the scandalous lives of the clergy. Yet he was, if we may be allowed the expression, the John the Baptist of the Reformation. The flames of his pile kindled a fire in the church that cast a brilliant light into the surrounding darkness, and whose glimmerings were not to be so readily extinguished."
The following powerful testimony if found in Foxe's BOOK OF MARTYRS -
"The bishops appointed by the Council [of Constance] stripped him of his priestly garments, degraded him, put a paper mitre on his head, on which was painted devils, with this inscription, 'A ringleader of heretics.' Which when he saw, he said: 'My Lord Jesus Christ, for my sake, did wear a crown of thorns; why should not I then, for His sake, again wear this light crown, be it ever so ignominious? Truly I will do it, and that willingly.' When it was set upon his head, the bishop said: 'Now we commit thy soul unto the devil.' 'But I,' said John Huss, lifting his eyes towards the heaven, 'do commend into Thy hands, O Lord Jesus Christ, my spirit which Thou has redeemed.'
When the chain was put about him at the stake, he said, with a smiling countenance, 'My Lord Jesus Christ was bound with a harder chain than this for my sake, and why then should I be ashamed of this rusty one?'
When the faggots were piled up to his very neck, the duke of Bavaria was so officious as to desire him to abjure. 'No,' said Huss, 'I never preached any doctrine of an evil tendency; and what I taught with my lips I now seal with my blood.' He then said to the executioner, 'You are now going to burn a goose, (Huss signifying 'goose' in the Bohemian language) but in a century you will have a 'swan' which you can neither roast nor boil.' If he were prophetic, he must have meant Martin Luther, who shone about a hundred years after, and who had a swan for his arms.
The flames were now applied to the faggots, when our martyr sung a hymn with so loud and cheerful a voice that he was heard through all the cracklings of the combustibles, and the noise of the multitude. At length his voice was interrupted by the severity of the flames, which soon closed his existence.
Then, with great diligence, gathering the ashes together, they cast them into the river Rhine, that the least remnant of that man should not be left upon the earth, whose memory, notwithstanding, cannot be abolished out of the minds of the godly, neither by fire, neither by water, neither by any kind of torment."

click for details | | THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF REDEMPTION: A Compact Survey of the Old and New Testaments by J. Gresham Machen and James Oscar Boyd
"Did you ever want to read a short book that unveils in an informative, sound, edifying, Reformed way the entire narrative of redemptive history from Genesis through Revelation? The OT scholar James Boyd and his NT counterpart, J. Gresham Machen, composed this book for you nearly a century ago, and I am grateful that Solid Ground Christian Books is unearthing and reprinting it. With helpful questions appended to each of its thirty-eight lessons, this little book makes an ideal tool for family worship so that you can lead your children quickly through the main redemptive thoughts of Bible history." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan
"This book surveys the history of God's redeeming grace. It reviews Old Testament history, disclosing the stream of God's redeeming purposes flowing down through older times. It also reviews New Testament history, disclosing the broadening and deepening of that purpose for us men and for mankind in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his Church." - Harold McA. Robinson
First published in 1922, this volume is one of the most precise and concise books I have ever seen that covers the entire narrative of redemptive history from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. James Boyd, the Old Testament scholar, and J. Gresham Machen, the New Testament scholar, join their efforts to reach the simple and the learned in one book. This book would be perfect as a tool in the family and the church, as it concludes each of the 38 chapters with a series of Questions on the Lesson.
THIS IS THE PERFECT BOOK TO GIVE TO A NEW BELEIVER.
James O. Boyd introduces the earliest chapters of the Bible immediately following man's Fall with these words: "God's tender love for his foolish, rebellious creatures 'will not let them go.' At the gates of the garden from which their sin has forever banished them, God already declares his purpose to 'bruise' the head of that serpent, Rom. 16:20, who had brought 'sin into the world and death by sin,' Gen. 3:15. Through the 'seed of the woman'---a 'Son of Man' of some future day---sinful man can escape the death he has brought on himself. And from Seth, the child 'appointed instead of' murdered Abel, a line of men descends, who believe this promise of God. Ch. 5. In Enoch we find them 'walking with God,' v. 24, in a fellowship that seemed lost when paradise was lost."
 J. Gresham Machen opens Lesson II of his material entitled "The Coming of the Lord" with these powerful words: "When the Son of God came to earth for our salvation, the world was ready for his coming. The whole course of history had been made to lead up to him. And he was well worthy of being thus the goal of history. For the One who came was none other than the eternal Son of God, the Word who was with God and who was God. He had existed from all eternity; he had been the instrument in creating the world. He was himself truly God, the same in substance with the Father, and equal in power and glory. Yet the One who was so great humbled himself to be born as a man and finally to suffer and die. His coming was a voluntary act, an act of the Father in giving him for the sins of the world, and his own act which he performed because he loved us. It was an act of infinite condescension. The Son of God humbled himself to lead a true human life; he took upon himself our nature. He was born, he grew in wisdom and stature, he suffered, he died. He was always God, but he became also man. Who can measure the depth of such condescending love?"

click for details | | MOODY CLASSICS Augustine, Bounds, Bunyan, Spurgeon, Ryle, Meyer, Muller, Sanders, Stone
We are offering the following 9 Classics from Moody Press. You can order any of these titles or all of them for a deeper discount. GREAT FOR A GIFT TO A NEW CHRISTIAN, OR A CHURCH OR SCHOOL LIBRARY.

 (1) ALL OF GRACE: Salvation is of the LORD by C.H. Spurgeon
 C. H. Spurgeon writes, "Only God can justify the ungodly, but He can do it to perfection. He casts our sins behind His back; He blots them out. He says that though they be sought for, they shall not be found... The doctrine of the atonement is to my mind one of the surest proofs of the divine inspiration of Holy Scripture. Who would or could have thought of a just Ruler dying for the unjust rebel? "

 (2) POWER THROUGH PRAYER by E.M. Bounds
Pastor and civil war chaplain E. M. Bounds penned his slim classic on prayer for the simple reason that Christians don't pray enough. "The little estimate we put on prayer is evident from the little time we give to it," he wrote. "Talking to men for God is a great thing, but talking to God for men is greater still."

 (3) THE CONFESSIONS OF ST. AUGUSTINE
That Augustine was one of the greatest minds who has ever been in the church is a given, and his most well-known work, the Confessions, has a unique place among the world's great classics. The line that appears in the opening paragraph of Book 1, "our heart is restless till it rest in thee," is quoted everywhere, though not everyone who quotes it or hears it knows where it came from and may even think it's a biblical saying.

 (4) THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS by John Bunyan
Join Christian and his companions on their journey to the Celestial City, as they pass through many experiences common to us all, in Bunyan's timeless allegory of the Christian's walk with God.

 (5) HOLINESS: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties and Roots by J.C. Ryle
J.C. Ryle's Holiness has imparted a standing challenge to Christians for 130 years. In this new, slimmed-down series of excerpts from Ryle's masterwork, we aim to present his original message to a whole new generation. Holiness, Ryle argued, was not simply a matter of believing and feeling, but of doing.

 (6) THE INCOMPARABLE CHRIST by J. Oswald Sanders
Author J. Oswald Sanders, a lawyer turned 20th century missionary statesman, follows Jesus from His pre-existence to His earthly life and coming Second Advent. Throughout it all he upholds Jesus as the powerful and perfect Savior of the world, arguing against any who would diminish His uniqueness.

 (7) THE SECRET OF GUIDANCE by F.B. Meyer
 F. B. Meyer writes, "The grace of purity and self-control, of fervent prayer and understanding in the Scriptures, of love for men and zeal for God, of lowliness and meekness, of gentleness and goodness - all is in Christ; and if Christ is in us, all is ours also."

 (8) ANSWERS TO PRAYER by George Muller
Prayer was the vital component of George Mueller's nineteenth-century ministry to England's orphans. Through his narrative account, Mueller reveals how powerful and spiritually rewarding prayer can be in your life.

 (9) NAMES OF GOD by Nathan Stone
Nathan J. Stone writes, "Indeed we cannot say all that the mysterious word God means to us until we know more about Him." God's many names reveal not only different dimensions of His character but also point to their fulfillment in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. This insightful little book accurately and clearly works through the many names of God throughout the Old Testament. We can now see God in new lights and angles as we learn of His justice, His unbounded love, His preeminence, and His character - all through His names. This book has sold over 400,000 copies.

BRAND NEW R.C . SPROUL TRILOGY AVAILABLE FOR AN INCREDIBLE PRICE
 (1) DEFENDING YOUR FAITH: An Introduction to Apologetics
From the classroom to mainstream media, Christians regularly find their fundamental beliefs discounted by opponents who consider faith to be incompatible with reason. But in this apologetics primer, Dr. R.C. Sproul sets forth the core claims of faith to reveal just how rational Christianity truly is. Surveying the history and fundamentals of apologetics, this book demonstrates how reason and scientific inquiry actually support Christianity’s claims—thus equipping believers to defend the existence of God and the Bible’s authority.
 (2) Getting the Gospel Right: The Tie That Binds Evangelicals Together
This sequel to Dr. R.C. Sproul’s book Faith Alone: The Evangelical Doctrine of Justification contains the complete text of The Gospel of Jesus Christ along with a thorough, point-by-point discussion and exposition. As Dr. Sproul explains, unity in the gospel touches the soul of the church itself and all of its members. To remain evangelical, we must recognize the importance of the gospel and of keeping it biblical. “To be faithful to the Great Commission,” Dr. Sproul concludes, “we must get the gospel right.”
 (3) WHAT WE BELIEVE: Understanding and Confessing The Apostles' Creed
The Christian life starts with simple faith. No longer captive to the world’s forms and structures, the Christian mind must be conformed to Christ. In What We Believe, Dr. R.C. Sproul updates his very first book, illuminating the basic tenets of the Apostles’ Creed. These affirmations of the ancient Christian church remain some of the most important summaries of Christian truth. They are as relevant today as when they were first written. We must know what we believe.

Heaven Is the Home You've Been Waiting For
In this world of fear, trials, and loneliness we often feel adrift--like we're still searching for a place where we can truly make ourselves at home. There's a longing for something more, something that makes us feel like we belong, something that resonates perfectly with who we were made to be. This longing is no small thing to be brushed off and forgotten--it's a guidepost letting us know we were made for another world. Earth is not our home. But it's close.
What we long for is the new earth, the place God has been preparing for our eternity with him. In Home, Elyse Fitzpatrick explores heaven and the afterlife, demonstrating that our final destination is not some dull, featureless space in the clouds, but rather a perfected earth. It's a real, physical place that we'll explore with real bodies. A place of beauty and wonder and free of all death and decay.
No need to chase a bucket list. On the new earth there will be no end of glorious sites and amazing activities, and we'll never run out of time to do them all. Includes questions for group discussion.

click for details | | THE WORD AND PRAYER: 52 Classic Devotions from the Minor Prophets John Calvin compiled by Charles E. Edwards
In 1897 the Presbyterian Board of Publication first published this Devotional Gem drawn from John Calvin's remarkable teaching on the Minor Prophets. Rev. Charles E. Edwards did a masterful job of selecting an exposition from Calvin's Lectures to stand beside the actual prayer that Calvin used to close that particular Lecture.
The Apostle's declared, "But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the Word" (Acts 6:4). Exposition and prayer are found here in the perfect introduction to John Calvin. This can serve as a tool to help the reader go through the Minor Prophets with the able assistance of the Prince of Expositors.
"Here, in these words from his lectures and prayers in the Geneva Academy, John Calvin most fully revealed his heart. As he prepared an international gathering of talented young men for gospel ministry--and not a few for martyrdom--he poured his knowledge into them and prayed fervently with them. Here he models what he sought to teach: if a man would be a pastor he must know God. If he would know God and serve man he must devote himself to prayer and the ministry of the word." -Sinclair B. Ferguson
"Calvin is the spiritual grandfather of us all because most Pauline and most consumed with the Spirit of Christ. This is a fine introduction to his teaching and spirit." - Geoff Thomas
"This precious book confirms Calvin's conviction that the Word and prayer work together to develop genuine piety in the Christian. Calvin taught that the Word is God's communication to us, providing us with spiritual food and medicine for spiritual health. Prayer is our communication to God by which we express praise and adoration, and bow in submissive piety before Him. May God mightily use this little volume to foster this spirit of devotion in many hearts and lives." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke
"Having made use of Calvin's devotions and prayers from the Minor Prophets since I was a high school student, I am delighted to commend them to a new generation (my old small green paperback edition is now flimsy and dog-eared!). THE WORD AND PRAYER: Classic Devotions from the Minor Prophets by John Calvin, compiled by Charles E. Edwards, will prove a welcome aid to the cultivation of Christian piety, as well as public prayer." - Ligon Duncan
"In a day when there are as many pieties as Christians, this volume will be a fresh breeze from a time and a tradition which gave thought to prayer, prayed fervently, carefully, and biblically. Calvin is perhaps the preeminent model for those who refuse to divorce intellect and heart, who would pray when they study and study when they pray." -R. Scott Clark
CALVIN WAS ACCUSTOMED TO BEGIN HIS LECTURES WITH THE FOLLOWING PRAYER:
"MAY THE LORD GRANT THAT WE MAY ENGAGE IN CONTEMPLATING THE MYSTERIES OF HIS HEAVENLY WISDOM WITH REALLY INCREASING DEVOTION, TO HIS GLORY AND TO OUR EDIFICATION. AMEN."

click for details | | JESUS THE WAY: The Child's Guide to Heaven Edward Payson Hammond
Edward Payson Hammond spent much of his life and ministry traveling the world to preach the Gospel, with a special emphasis upon children. His labors were honored by men like C.H. Spurgeon, Andrew Bonar, W.S. Plumer and multitudes of others. When he wrote letters to some of the leading ministers of the nineteenth century he asked their opinion about the vital subject addressed in this book: the conversion of children. Here are a couple responses he received:
"My conviction is that our converts from among children are among the very best we have. I should judge them to have been more numerously genuine than any other class, more constant, and in the long run more solid." - Charles H. Spurgeon
"In awakenings that have been given us, the cases of young people have been as entirely satisfactory as any cases we have had. If conversion be God's work, in which the Holy Spirit reveals Christ to the soul, surely His work can take place in children as really as in the old." - Andrew Bonar
In his book "The Children of Church Members" Richard Fuller wrote the following:
" It has appeared by the best evidence the nature of the subject admits, that divine grace has frequently produced the conversion of children when they were very young; and when they are thus brought up under the religious care of both their parents and the church, it may be rationally expected the blessing will be frequently afforded."
This volume will immediately capture the attention of the youngest children as Hammond relates his experience of first entering his journey to the city of Jerusalem. Each of the first four chapters is a moving appeal to children to turn from sin to trust the Savior of sinners. The final chapter is addressed to those who have come to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
A powerful book to present the gospel to children 6-12 years old.

click for details | | THE REDEEMER'S TEARS WEPT OVER LOST SOULS John Howe
Although written in 1684 ands in the style of the day, this classic volume will be of interest to all who recognize the imperative of winning souls for Christ.
"The Redeemer's Tears Wept over Lost Souls, this moving book, first printed in 1683, contains Howe's essay on Luke 19:41-42, telling how Jesus wept over Jerusalem because the city didn't recognize what belonged to peace in its day. It begins with a long exposition on the great gospel truths that "belong to men's peace." It then focuses on the short "day" we have in this life, which will decide our eternal destiny. It admonishes readers to flee to the willing, yearning Savior. This is Howe's most searching and compelling book for wooing a sinner to Christ. He stresses the responsibility of man within the framework of divine sovereignty. It makes for a compelling read. We are grateful to Solid Ground Christian Books for bringing it back into print this century." - Joel Beeke
Here is a fine biblical exposition of Luke 19:41,42 (Jesus weeping over Jerusalem), with appropriate application that is as suitable today as when Howe wrote it. The first part portrays the Savior as He looked down upon Jerusalem - a stirring scene filled with divine pathos. Then follows a series of explanations and admonitions, all breathing a compassionate anxiety to win the lost for Christ.

click for details | | THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS: Edited by George Offor, including Bunyan’s own Marginal Notes JOHN BUNYAN
THIS IS A COMPLETE, UNABRIDGED EDITION CONTAINING THE ORIGINAL MARGINAL NOTES OF JOHN BUNYAN.
Other than the Bible, there is no book written in the English language that has been published more than “The Pilgrims Progress”, by John Bunyan. We believe there are two primary reasons for this. First, the book is thoroughly and eminently Scriptural. But secondly, and just as importantly, it is profoundly practical, being a deeply experiential and spiritual account of the realities of the true Christian call, conversion, walk, opposition, and spiritual rewards, both temporal and eternal; all applied to pilgrims of various gifts and capacities.
The main reason this particular edition of Pilgrims Progress was selected is because the original editor, George Offor, carefully reviewed all eight of Bunyan’s own editions being careful to produce a copy that adhered strictly to Bunyan’s own revisions of the text. But in addition, Offor was also careful to include Bunyan’s Marginal Notes. Bunyan himself provided these notes and insisted that they were one major key to understanding the text, the other being the illuminating work of The Spirit. We have made no changes to Offor’s/Bunyan’s text in this edition. May it be blessed to your soul as it has been to millions before you is our prayer.
Charles H. Spurgeon loved reading and re-reading this work, claiming to have read it over 100 times! Quite often his wife read it to him in the afternoon for relaxation and meditation. He often quoted Bunyan in his sermons declaring, "Though his writings are charmingly full of poetry, yet he cannot give us his Pilgrim's Progress, that sweetest of all prose poems, without continually making us feel and say, 'Why, this man is a living Bible!' Prick him anywhere, his blood is Bibline, the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is full of the Word of God."
George Whitefield said of this book, "It smells of the prison. It was written when the author was confined in Bedford jail. And ministers never write or preach so well as when under the cross: the Spirit of Christ and of Glory then rests upon them."
John Newton added, "Of all our author's writings, there is no one perhaps so universally and deservedly admired as his Pilgrim's Progress, in which he gives a delineation of the Christian life under the idea of a journey or a pilgrimage, from the City of Destruction to the heavenly Jerusalem. In this treatise Bunyan appears not only as a writer well instructed in the mysteries of the kingdom, but a man of real genius."
John Owen once went to hear John Bunyan preach. Charles II, hearing of it, asked the doctor why someone as thoroughly educated as he would want to hear a mere tinker preach. Owen replied, "May it please your Majesty, if I could possess the tinker's abilities to grip men's hearts, I would gladly give in exchange all my learning."

 | | | | THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD: Classic Volume A.W. PINK
The timeless appeal of this classic book, written by a preacher with a worldwide ministry during the first half of the twentieth century, demonstrates the deep hunger for a saving knowledge of God present in each generation. Arthur Pink sought to give readers not just a theoretical knowledge of God but pointed them toward a personal relationship of yielding to him and living according to his biblical precepts. Pink's book explores attributes such as God's decrees, foreknowledge, sovereignty, holiness, grace, and mercy, among many others, all packaged in a style especially useful for pastors, teachers, and Bible students. Our God who is above all names cannot be found through human searching alone, Pink teaches, but can be known only as he is revealed by the Holy Spirit through his living Word.

click for details | | THE HUMANNESS OF JOHN CALVIN: The Reformer as a Husband, Father, Pastor & Friend Richard Stauffer, translated by George Shriver
 NOW AVAILABLE TO SHIP!
"This little book is one of a kind. Written by a careful historian and Swiss pastor, it draws on Calvin's correspondence and other records of the time to give a strong impression of what the reformer was like as a person, in his family life, in his close friendships, and in his sympathy and generosity as a pastor." - Rev. Sherman Isbell
"I shall never forget the impact of this small work on my own estimation of Calvin: it completely re-oriented my perspective on the French Reformer, and now, thanks to Solid Ground Christian Books, it can do the same for you. Read on, prepare to be challenged and rejoice that God raises up such historians for the blessing of the Church." - Dr. Michael Haykin
"In the early years of my first pastorate I read the excellent biographies of Calvin by T. H. L. Parker, and Emanuel Stickelberger. At the same time I acquired Calvin's letters and the splendid little study which you now hold in your hands. Already convinced of the humanness of Calvin I considered Richard Stauffer's study to be unique in demonstrating this dimension of the great theologian. Beyond its value as an historical polemic, it provides a marvelous example to all who would be faithful pastors and theologians. The best response to detractors is the Christ-like example which Calvin left us." - Rev. Gregory Reynolds
Through the nearly 450 years since his death, John Calvin has been portrayed by his critics - Protestant as well as Catholic - as a cold, ruthless fanatic. This distorted characterization, for the most part, remains today. What was this man really like? An unfeeling, gloomy monster or a saint untouched by the common problems which beset lesser men?
The author examines Calvin's personal correspondence and reveals him as a man capable of human mistakes and weaknesses, and yet, a deeply dedicated, sensitive individual undeserving of the years of vilification. This book, available here in English, for the first time in over 35 years, considers John Calvin from a personal standpoint. The excellent preface by Calvin-scholar John T. McNeill, carefully noted resources, brevity, readability, and human interest make this a biography for scholars and laymen alike.
"On the occasion of the appearance of this English edition (in 1971), I would like to share a hope and a memory. The hope: that the portrait of Calvin as husband and father, friend and pastor, which I have tried to paint on these pages, might show more than one reader the true stature of the Genevan Reformer, who is also one of the spiritual fathers of the founders of the United States. The memory: when I was a student in New York and assisted in worship in the small French Church of the Holy Spirit, I never failed to be moved upon reading on the walls of the sanctuary the names of the Huguenot families which had found refuge in the New World. At that time I could not help thinking (and it is still my belief to this day) that these witnesses of the faith, uncompromising in their convictions, were fully the descendants of this John Calvin, who, though human in his obedience, yet offered his 'heart as a burnt sacrifice to the Lord.' It is in thinking of these refugees of other years that I dedicate this essay, which attempts to exonerate the name of Calvin, to contemporary Americans who are mindful of their origins." - the Author
