RICHARD NEWTON CHILDREN'S TITLES
Richard Newton (1813-1887) was called "The Prince of Preachers to the young" by no less than Charles H. Spurgeon.

Newton was born in Liverpool, England, died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1836, and the General Theological Seminary, New York City, in 1839. He was ordained in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in the latter year in the Church of the Holy Trinity, and received a call directly to the rectorship of the same church. A year later he became recor at St. Paul's Church, Philadelphia, which post he held for twenty-two years. In 1862 he was called to the Church of the Epiphany, Philadelphia, where he labored until 1881, when he accepted the rectorship of the Church of the Covenant, Philadelphia, where he remained the rest of his life. Dr. Newton was distinguished for his contributions to juvenile literature. He was very successful in preparing for sermons for children

Solid Ground Christian Books is commited to reprinting the books of this brilliant and humble servant of Jesus Christ who sought to preach one sermon each month to the children of his flock. Every month for years over 500 children sat at his feet as he opened the Scriptures to them.

We are honored to bring these great volumes back into print!

A NOTE FROM DR. JOHN SNYDER:

"When the Behold Your God: Rethinking God Biblically study was released in 2013, we felt (as did many others) that the evangelical churches needed to face some hard questions. Many had carefully traced the symptoms of an internal decay within evangelicalism, a decay that was occurring even while outwardly there appeared to be continued successes. Behold Your God: Rethinking God Biblically was written with the desire to help stir God's people by pointing them back to the fountainhead—God Himself. Precious time was being wasted as Western evangelicals attempted to fix the external problems. It was our belief that the surest hope of a cure was to deal with the root issue, and that root issue appeared to be an inadequate understanding of our own God.

The response to that study, by God's grace, has been far greater than we could have imagined. During the last five years the emails, letters, and personal testimonies of those who have benefitted from the study have been gratefully received. It is always humbling to see God use our efforts as a part of something far greater than anything we could accomplish. Within these communications there has been a recurrent question: where do I go to find more resources on the character of God? Thankfully, there are many fine treatments of God's perfections. Often, however, they are either very large or very complex books. In response to this question, we have put together this new study dealing primarily with the attributes of God rather than ways the evangelical church often lives below His self-revelation. In a sense, The Weight of Majesty is a continuation of the theme we explored in week one of Rethinking God Biblically—that God Himself is the great attraction of the Christian life. By His help we hope to continue going deeper into the themes that were introduced in the original study through several forthcoming installments in the Behold Your God series.

Nothing is so satisfying for the true Christian as an ever-increasing and experiential knowledge of our God. This cannot be gained safely without diligently searching the Bible. Therefore, the real purpose of this book is to guide you back into those passages which contain some of the most significant descriptions of God. Avoid the temptation to merely get through the exercises without wrestling honestly with these matters. Sit long at the feet our Heavenly Father and ask Him to tell you about Himself. We know it is too easy to check a box, fill in the blank with the correct word, and move on unaffected. Don't settle for undigested concepts or merely emotional responses to passages. Plead with God to help you adjust everything in life to fit what you are learning about Him. Bring both your mind and heart together, and bow before God in real worship as you study each day, until like Job you feel compelled to say, 'I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear; but now my eye sees You!' You will not be disappointed with the Living God.

May this study be a lifelong friend as we labor to live unto God.

THE COMPLETE WORKS OF THOMAS HALYBURTON (FOUR VOLUME HARDCOVER SET)
THOMAS HALYBURTON (1674-1712)

WE SOLD THE ONLY SET WE HAD IMMEDIATELY--THE PRICE BELOW IS TENTATIVE AS WE HOPE TO GET MORE SETS, BUT UNCERTAIN AT THIS TIME.

VOLUME ONE- FAITH & JUSTIFICATION

In a day of 'conveyer-belt' converts the question may be asked, What is that faith that saves? In this volume Thomas Halyburton examines with masterly accuracy and powerful reasoning exactly what a biblical Christian is. In a feast of truth he exegetes, analyses and unveils the miracle of saving faith. Halyburton is a classic example of edifying Scottish theology and warm, passionate preaching.

If you wish to understand how the Lord saves the sinner and where that life-changing event of justification occurs, then Halyburton on Faith and Justification is for you.

Prof. H.M. Cartwright said the following about the importance of Thomas Halyburton: "Although Halyburton lived three hundred years ago and his public ministry occupied only twelve years in total, mostly in comparative obscurity, he has been regarded as one of the most distinguished Scottish theologians. Hugh Martin described Halyburton and Cunningham as "the two greatest theologians that Scotland has ever produced". John Duncan regarded him as "a minor John Owen", in the same category as Hermann Witsius, and classed his Memoirs with Augustine's Confessions and Bunyan's Grace Abounding. Among those outside Scotland who benefited from and highly recommended the Memoirs and other published works of Halyburton are such varied and significant figures as George Whitefield and John Wesley, John Newton and Isaac Watts, and Archibald Alexander of Princeton."

VOLUME TWO: FAITH & SALVATION

"What is the state of my soul before God?" In a day when life is lived for the moment and eternity is rarely considered, many never give serious thought to such a vital question. Here to help you reflect is a godly minister with a true concern for souls. He will sober you. He will challenge you. He will spur you as a sinner to seek salvation by faith in Jesus Christ and as a saint to walk in the way of joyful, obedient service. For your lasting benefit read Halyburton on Faith and Salvation.

This volume contains Halyburton's work, "The Great Concern of Salvation."

Prof. F.S. Leahy said the following about this Second Volume: "Thomas Halyburton one of Scotland’s greatest theologians, was first and foremost a preacher of the gospel and as a theologian he spoke from the heart. In this second volume of his Works we meet Halyburton, preacher and theologian. It consists of a series of sermons under the title, The Great Concern of Salvation.

Considering that Halyburton lived some three hundred years ago, it is striking to see how directly and plainly he speaks to us today. Even allowing for his divisions and sub-divisions, his style is lucid and cogent. There is a warmth and passion and intense earnestness in every sentence. His use of Scripture is impressive and effective. He is exhaustive in his treatment of Scripture, but never tiring; faithful in application, but never offensive. Indeed his concern for the spiritual well-being of his hearers is evident in his every word."

VOLUME THREE: FAITH & REVELATION

Halyburton's book on the "Insufficiency of Natural Religion, and the Necessity of Revelation" (republished as this volume) was occasioned by the publication of certain treatises written by Lord Herbert of Cherbury with the avowed object of setting aside the pretensions of all "particular religions," as he termed them; and resting the claims of religion at large on the basis of nature alone. In his reply to this scheme, Halyburton sets himself largely and distinctly to show that the light of nature is extremely defective, even with respect to the discoveries of a Deity, and the worship that is to be rendered to him; with respect to the question of man's true happiness, the rule of duty, and the motives to obedience; and that it is unable to discover the means of obtaining pardon for sin, or to eradicate inclinations to sin, and subdue its power. He appeals to reason, to testimony, to matter of fact, and to the general experience of the world.

Joel Beeke writes: "Christians like Thomas Halyburton, who love the truths of God's Word and have experienced the gospel of Christ as "the power of God unto salvation" (Rom. 1:16), have a twofold duty toward those who now sit in the darkness of latter-day deism. First, we must weep for their sad condition and pray for their salvation, as Christ viewed the people of His time: "He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd" (Matt. 9:36). Second, we, like Halyburton, and as Machen said, must believe that "the Christian faith is capable of scholarly defense," and be willing to do the hard work needed to present such a defense. We must seize our task as evangelists to set forth the truth "in clear opposition" to the errors of men and whatever else may exalt itself against the knowledge of God (2 Cor. 10:3-6)."

VOLUME FOUR: FAITH & EXPERIENCE

Have we believed in Jesus Christ to the saving of our souls? The grace of God in the lives of His people may have a secret beginning, but its progress ought to be known by its fruits. While ultimately Scripture must validate our profession, we may learn from the pilgrimage of noted Christians. The rise of spiritual concern, the deepening of conviction, the liberty of the gospel, the conflict with Satan, the persuit of holiness and a blessed eternity, all these vital subjects and more are to be found in this volume.

This volume contains: Halyburton's Memoirs; Two sermons*; The Obligation of Oaths to Posterity*; A Short Account of Lady Anne Elcho's Death*.

(* Not previously published in a volume of Halyburton's Works.)

Prof. Allan M. Harman said the following about this final volume that primarily consists in the Memoir of Halyburton: "What point has this republication of Halyburton's Memoirs in particular for Christians in the 21st century? They show us a form of spirituality different from that prevailing in our time. What Halyburton was doing in private is what puritan preaching did from the pulpit. It encouraged people to search and know their own hearts before God, and moved them to trust in Gospel promises. Self-examination prompted believers to acknowledge and confess their sins, with renewed thankfulness for the pardoning mercy of God. This we see exemplified in Halyburton's spiritual diary. The need is for Christians to apply their renewed minds to their spirituality and to learn from the giants of the past how to live consciously in the presence of God (coram deo), seeking to set sin aside and to follow after holiness, without which none of us shall see God."

(1) THE WORKS OF JOHN NEWTON (4 VOLUME SET)

‘In few writers are Christian doctrine, experience and practice more happily balanced than in the author of these letters, and few write with more simplicity, piety and force.’ — C. H. SPURGEON

‘What thousands have derived repeated profit and pleasure from the perusal of these utterances of the heart! Nor ever will they cease to be found means of grace whilst God has a church on earth.’ —WILLIAM JAY

Not surprisingly, Alexander Whyte could write, ‘For myself, I keep John Newton on my selectest shelf of spiritual books: by far the best kind of books in the whole world of books.’

The text of this new four-volume edition of The Works of John Newton has been entirely reformatted, producing a clear and easily navigable set of documents for today’s reader.

(2) THE WORKS OF JOHN FLAVEL (6 VOLUME SET)

Flavel’s complete works had long been unobtainable until reprinted by the Trust in 1968. His six volumes are in themselves a library of the best Puritan divinity and a set will be a life-long treasure to those who possess it. He is one of that small number of evangelical writers who can by their lucidity and simplicity help those at the beginning of the Christian life and at the same time be a strong companion to those who near its end.

(3) THE WORKS OF ANDREW FULLER (4 VOLS IN ONE)

‘Andrew Fuller was perhaps the most judicious and able theological writer that ever belonged to our denomination.’ — JOHN RYLAND JR.

‘The greatest theologian of his century.’ — C. H. SPURGEON

‘His influence on American Baptists was incalculable.’ — A. H. NEWMAN

‘Without a doubt, he was the greatest theologian of the late eighteenth-century transatlantic Baptist community.’ — MICHAEL A. G. HAYKIN

(4) TRACTS & LETTERS OF JOHN CALVIN (IN SEVEN VOLUMES)

Long unavailable the republication of Calvin’s Tracts and Letters will delight all who have come to delight in the writings of the sixteenth-century reformer of Geneva.

Three volumes of Tracts comprise some of Calvin’s most important writings...All the Tracts sustain the reputation of their distinguished author; and, considering their controversial nature, do not often display the virulent spirit and intemperate language for which modern critics all too often condemn Calvin.

The man who regularly lectured to theological students, preached on average five times a week and authored enough material to fill forty-eight enormous volumes could scarcely be expected to show enthusiasm for correspondence. Yet in the Complete Works of John Calvin there are to be found no less than eleven volumes of his correspondence!

Calvin wrote to kings and princes, reformers and friends, nobility and common people alike. His letters discuss affairs of State, but also the most mundane problems of everyday life, and through them all is revealed a man of deep pastoral concern, consistent and exemplary evangelistic zeal, with a humble sense of the final authority of God and his word.

TRUTH MADE SIMPLE: The Attributes of God Explained for Children
John Todd

In this remarkable book JOHN TODD (1800-1873) begins what he hoped to be a Systematic Theology for Children. He begins with Theology Proper, the Doctrine of God, and he covers the following:

IS THERE ANY GOD?

GOD IS A SPIRIT

GOD ETERNAL

GOD IS EVERY WHERE

GOD ALL-WISE

GOD KNOWS EVERY THING

GOD'S POWER

TRUTH OF GOD

GOD DOES AS HE PLEASES

GOD IS HOLY

GOD IS GOOD

"Truth Made Simple is a friendly but potent deviation from the fluff that permeates the childrens' book market today. Mr. Todd came up in a generation that had more confidence in childrens' ability to assimilate deep spiritual truth. He provides a welcome addition to the library of any parent who is seriously discipling his child in the Scripture. The Address to Mothers alone is worth the price of the book! Its focus on eternity will encourage us to approach our daily discipling of our children with reverence and zeal." - Selah Helms, author or "Small Talks on Big Questions"

Richard Newton, who was called by Spurgeon "The Prince of Preachers to Children", said the following about John Todd: "When I was a young man I happened to read a volume of "Lectures for Children" which had been written and published by Dr. John Todd. I felt then as if I had found a gold mine. That volume lasted me all through college, and taught me how to talk to children."

RILLS FROM THE FOUNTAIN OF LIFE: Good Words from God's Word for the Young
Richard Newton

This was the very first book written by the man who went on to become known as "The Prince of Preachers to Children." Newton explains the origin of the book in the Preface: "The following sermons have been published at the request of the teachers of the Sunday-schools of St. Peter's Church in Philadelphia. For the last two years, there has been a service for the children of this congregation, on the afternoon of the first Sunday of the month. On these occasions, the children occupy the body of the church. The usual service is performed, and a sermon preached, designed especially for the benefit of the children. It is called, 'THE CHILDREN'S CHURCH.'"

For more than 30 years Newton conducted CHILDREN'S CHURCH each month in which he preached a full length sermon prepared for the young lambs of his flock. Thousands upon thousands heard these masterful addresses, and the Lord used these messages mightily and raised up an army of faithful servants who went into pastoral ministry, the mission field, and numerous other places where the name of Christ is honored. THESE MESSAGES ARE BOTH TIMELESS AND TIMELY.

The subjects include:

THE PLEASANT WAY: on Proverbs 3:7

THE SPIDER'S EXAMPLE: on Proverbs 30:28

THE MARKS OF A BEN-ONI: on Genesis 35:18

THE CROOKED THINGS STRAIGHTENED: on Ecclesiastes 1:15

THE GREAT MAN IN GOD'S SIGHT: on Luke 1:15

THE LILY'S LESSONS: on Matthew 6:28

THE GIFT FOR GOD: on Proverbs 23:26

THE WONDERFUL LAMP: on Psalm 119:105

THE CHILD'S FORTUNE TOLD: on Proverbs 20:11

THE MILLENNIAL MENAGERIE: on Isaiah 11:6

THE BEST MERCHANDISE: on Proverbs 3:14

THE LESSONS JESUS TEACHES: on Matthew 11:29

"Every page is adapted to rivet attention, both by freshness of its matter, and the simple, yet graphic character of the illustrative anecdotes. Christian mothers will find ample material here for a dozen pleasant Sunday afternoons with their children, and teachers a store of instructive and interesting matter." -from the original publisher's advertisement

BIBLE ANIMALS and Lessons Taught by Them for Children
Richard Newton

"We enter now on a new course of sermons for the young. The subject of these sermons will be Bible Natural History. We shall take up one after another of the different beasts and birds mentioned in the Bible, and, in their habits and characters, try to find illustrations of some of the truths taught us in the Bible, and of the duties that spring out of these truths." -from the Author

"Just the thing to put into the hands of the young folks. Dr. Newton is a prince among writers to the young." - The British Weekly

"For clearness, simplicity, and vigor of style, together with wealth of apt illustration, there are no books for the young that 'hold the field' with greater tenacity than those of Rev. Richard Newton. They are packed full of entertainment, always mingled with spiritual instruction of the best sort; and the inetrest is kept up by the breadth of the field from which the author gleans his anecdotes." - The Christian Leader

"Write on, good Dr. Newton, our children will never grow tired of your emblems and stories. Every teacher should read this book and then repeat it to his class. Anything for the young by Dr. Richard Newton should be within reach of every Sunday-school teacher and student." - The Sword and the Trowel

THE GIANTS AND HOW TO FIGHT THEM: Lessons for Children of All Ages
Richard Newton

"There are giants in the earth in these days; and God expects us all to engage in the work of trying to fight them. When I speak of giants now, I do not mean physical giants, but moral giants. I do not mean men with huge bodies, four or five times larger than common-sized men; but I mean great sins of different kinds, which may well be called giants. I want now to speak about five giants that we should all unite trying to fight against. One of these is a good way off from us; but the rest are very near us. Listen to me while I tell you who these giants are, and the way in which we must try to fight them."

I. The first giant I am to speak of is the GIANT HEATHENISM. This giant doesn't live here. He is found in countries where the Gospel is not known. His castles may be seen in Africa, and in India, in China, and in the islands of the sea. He is a huge giant. This giant is very strong, and very cruel. Well, what are we to do to this giant? Why, we must fight him, as David did Goliath. The Bible is the brook to which we must go. The truths which it contains are the stones that we must use.

II. The second giant I would speak of is the GIANT SELFISHNESS. The giant selfishness never sees, or hears, or does anything for anyone but himself if you find that you are getting to think more of yourself than of others, then be sure the giant is after you. We must fight this giant by self-denial.

III. The third giant I want to speak about is the GIANT COVETOUSNESS. This giant is very large in size, and very strong in limb; but he has the tiniest tittle bit of a heart you ever saw, might put it in a nutshell. The only wonder is how so huge a frame can be supported by so little a heart. But this is not all, for little as his heart is, it is hard as stone. He is ashamed of his name, and won't answer to it. He pretends that his right name is — frugality. But this is a great story. Frugality is a very different person. He is a good, true, honest fellow If you ask, How are you to fight him? I answer, by learning to give.

IV. The fourth giant of which I will speak is the GIANT ILL-TEMPER. But how are we to fight against, this giant? I answer, By trying to be like Jesus. We always think of Him as — the "gentle Jesus, meek and mild." Do you suppose that this giant ever got a single link of his chain on Jesus? No.

V. The last giant I wish to speak about is the GIANT INTEMPERANCE. He is a very ugly-looking fellow When he is in a good humor, and feels jolly, he puts on a silly face, and looks very foolish. But when he gets in a passion he is awful looking, and it makes one shudder to see him.

In addition to these Five Giants Dr. Newton also has Five addresses on the following:

THE GOOD SOLDIERS: on 2 Timothy 2:3

THE CONQUEROR'S JEWEL: on Exodus 28:19

THE WONDERFUL EYES: on Proverbs 15:3

ACKNOWLEDGING GOD: on Proverbs 3:6

THE CURE FOR CARE: on Genesis 22:14

NUTS FOR BOYS TO CRACK: Earthly Stories with a Heavenly Meaning
John Todd

John Todd (1800-1873) was a master teacher. He published about thirty volumes, all of which were re-issued in England, and several of them have been translated into German, French, modern Greek, Dutch, Danish, Italian, Arabic, Armenian, Turkish, and Tamil. His "Lectures to Children" have been printed in raised letters for the blind, and used as a schoolbook in the colony of Sierra Leone. Of some of his books several hundred thousand copies have been sold, and several of his shorter pieces, notably "Hafed's Dream," were for many years favorites for school readers.

His books FEED MY LAMBS and TRUTH MADE SIMPLE are sermons for children which have become very popular once again after being out of print for more than 125 years.

This book is filled with stories that will cause boys and young people to think about the heavenly meaning found in earthly stories. This book, like all John Todd's works, will both entertain and inform. Todd loved children and he sought always to speak their language without being silly and childish. He always had eternity in view and desired that all who read his books would be brought into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

RICHARD NEWTON, himself the 'Prince of Preacher to the young' (according to CH Spurgeon), said that he learned how to teach children from reading one of the books of John Todd.

WILLIAM G. BLAIKIE, in his outstanding book called 'For the Work of the Ministry' said the following about John Todd, "In preaching to the young, some American ministers have been highly successful; such men as Dr. John Todd and Dr. Richard Newton have attained the first rank in this department of work."

PUBLICATIONS OF THE AMERICAN TRACT SOCIETY: Volumes One - Six
Various Authors

The American Tract Society began to publish the very best of evangelical Christian Literature in the early years of the 19th century. They not only produced books from men like John Owen, John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards and many, many more but they also were faithful to produce Tracts of various sizes (between 4 and 48 pages) which addressed such topics as-

- THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, THE DAY OF TRIAL, DO YOU LOVE GOD?

- COUNSELS TO A YOUNG MAN, THE TEMPTATIONS OF YOUNG MEN

- PRIVATE DEVOTION, DO YOU PRAY IN YOUR FAMILY? By William Nevins

- COME AND WELCOME TO JESUS CHRIST by John Bunyan

- THE DECAY OF SPIRITUAL AFFECTIONS by John Owen

- WALKING BY FAITH by Andrew Fuller,

- AN ADDRESS TO SEAMAN by Edward Payson

- THE SINNER DIRECTED TO THE SAVIOR by John Flavel

- THE SABBATH A BLESSING TO MANKIND by Gardiner Spring

- THE WELL-SPENT DAY by Philip Doddridge,

- GROWTH IN GRACE by Rev. Thomas Goodwin

- A Preservative against the Sins and Follies of Childhood and Youth by Isaac Watts

- QUESTIONS AND COUNSEL By Ashbel Green

- THE PROGRESS OF GRACE; in three letters to a friend by John Newton

"The American Tract Society publications are of enduring and superlative quality. They represent the cream of the best writers in the Reformed world from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, such as John Flavel, Jonathan Edwards, and Archibald Alexander. Almost without exception, these tracts, which range from four to forty-eight pages each and cover a remarkable variety of subjects, interface biblical, doctrinal, and experiential material in practically helpful ways. Having often perused these volumes in my own study with considerable profit for nearly four decades, I am so grateful to SGCB for bringing them back into print again. Here is truly a case where 'the old is better'!" - Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"The early publications of the American Tract Society are as valuable as they are varied. The individual pieces were written by well-seasoned Christians and abound in sweet seasoning for the soul. Something here for everyone."- Dr. Robert P. Martin, Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle, Washington and Editor of Reformed Baptist Theological Review

"The collected tracts are a veritable treasure chest of good sound doctrine from the greatest proclaimers of gospel truth the church has had for the last 300 years. You would be doing your soul a tremendous dis-service if you fail to obtain these gems!" - Dr. Don Kistler, founder of Soli Deo Gloria and now Northampton Publications

"My study of ministry during the 1800's has caused me to love these ministers and their writings. The American Tract Society took theses stories, sermons and messages and published them into a format that gospel messengers could take to the harvest field. Though small, these tracts contain more meat of the word and truth than books many times their size." - John A. Wega, Executive Director, U.S. Christian Commission-Civil War Museum Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

BEYOND AMAZING GRACE
Timeless Pastoral Wisdom from the Letters, Hymns & Sermons of John Newton
J. Todd Murray

No one who knew John Newton as a young lad would ever have dreamed that this teenage rebel, profane sailor, naval deserter and slave-trader would one day write the lyrics to one of the best-known hymns of all time, 'Amazing Grace'. The story of how such a notorious sinner was converted to Christ and went on to become an equally noteworthy pastor and a leader of the Evangelical movement in eighteenth-century England is simply astounding. In compiling this selection from his writings, Todd Murray has made NewtonÆs gentle pastoral wisdom available to a new generation of readers.

J. Todd Murray has been the pastor overseeing the worship and music of The Bible Church of Little Rock since 1983 where, in addition to composing and recording music for his local congregation, he also shares in the general pastoral duties, teaching and shepherding. Todd is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute and Moody Graduate School. He and his wife Tandy have been blessed with five children.

"While John Newton is known primarily as the author of the Hymn, 'Amazing Grace' he was actually a very competent physician of the soul, both in diagnosing its ills, and providing the Scriptural remedy. Unfortunately our current Christian public has benefited little from the work of this amazing man. Now Todd Murray has done us an outstanding favor by making available to us both the writings and the hymns of Newton. I highly commend this book and look forward to reading it many times." - Jerry Bridges, author, The Pursuit of Holiness

"This is a fascinating digest of insights from John Newton's lesser-known hymns and writings. What stands out most in Newton's post-conversion character is the depth of his interest in biblical truth, sound doctrine and systematic theology. Almost from the moment he was changed by God's amazing grace, Newton was driven by a heartfelt passion for understanding the truth and proclaiming it to others with the utmost clarity and simplicity. That, as much as any other characteristic, made him one of the great English hymn-writers of all time. You will be both moved and invigorated as you read it, too, I am certain." - Dr John MacArthur, Pastor-Teacher, Grace Community Church

"Ex-slave-trader John Newton was the friendliest, wisest, humblest and least pushy of all the eighteenth-century evangelical leaders, and was perhaps the greatest pastoral letter-writer of all time. Beyond Amazing Grace gives us Newton's heart, and what a heart it was! This book is pure gold." - J. I. Packer, Professor of Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

VIEWING SICKNESS BIBLICALLY: How to Make Sense of Seemingly Senseless Sickness
Joseph Whiting

What if nearly everything you think you know about sickness is wrong?

Much of our understanding of sickness has been shaped by our self-obsessed Western culture. We see it as an enemy to be avoided or as a punishment meted out by an angry or indifferent God. We are told God has promised us lives free from disease and suffering, and when it seems those promises fail, we are left wondering how a God of love could be glorified in our own illness or in the sickness of someone we love.

In Viewing Sickness Biblically, Joseph Whiting draws from the wellspring of Scripture, seasoned with personal experience, to address these questions every Christian must grapple with and help show the path to a more biblical understanding of the cause, purpose, and benefits of sickness.

Through what lens ought we see sickness, death, and the God who is in charge of it all?

The correct answer is sure to bring much glory to God and comfort to our souls.

__________________________

Christian hope encompasses that future day when sickness and suffering will be no more because the curse and presence of sin—which Christ bore for us—will be no more (Matt. 8:14–17; Isa. 53:4; Gal. 3:13), for “the first things have passed away” (Rev. 21:4). This day is coming but is not yet here; it is the day we long for when we will know the fullness of salvation in Christ. Until that day, sin, suffering, and sickness are both a part of a groaning creation (Rom. 8:19–25) and a means through which God works His sanctifying grace, molding us into the image of Christ (Rom. 5:1–5; James 1:2–4).

"Joe Whiting has written a book, Viewing Sickness Biblically, that helps us to embrace God’s will in sickness and to grow in faith and love for Christ. It is a book that gives us hope and encourages us to see the goodness of God and the wonder of grace more fully through suffering, as well as help with the specifics of how to get there. Viewing Sickness Biblically is a book written by one who has tasted the kindness of God in Jesus, lived the truths and principles he writes about, and set an example, in his own life, of following Christ, for us to walk behind (1 Cor. 11:1)." – Joey Newton, Pastor of Newtown Bible Church, Newtown, CT; MDiv, The Master’s Seminary; PhD, Southern Seminary

"The current culture seems to think that you have to have experience with an issue before you can even speak about the issue. If you share that perspective, this book is for you because Joe Whiting has experienced suffering. But more important than Joe’s experience with suffering is Joe’s theology of suffering drawn directly from Scripture. There is great benefit in being taught by someone who has suffered. There is greater benefit being taught by someone who believes in the inerrancy and sufficiency of Scripture to help those who suffer." – Bud Moss, Pastor, MDiv, The Master’s Seminary, Pine Grove Baptist Church, Leesville, SC

About the author:

Joseph Whiting resides in South Carolina with his wife of thirteen years, Amy. They have two children with the Lord. Joseph attended The Master’s Seminary from 2010 to 2013 and has been a Certified Biblical Counselor with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors since January 2019. He has counseled, taught, and ministered in several states and is now at his home church in South Carolina.

THE CHRISTIAN'S PRESENT FOR ALL SEASONS: Containing Devotional Thoughts of Eminent Divines
Joseph Hall, Isaac Watts, John Owen, Richard Sibbes, John Flavel, Jonathan Edwards, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, William Jay and More

An Introductory Essay on "Devotion" by William B. Sprague sets the stage for a rich devotional journey from Joseph Hall to William Jay. This volume was published in 1866 by The American Tract Society and it contains dozens and dozens of brief devotional exercises to stimulate the brethren to love and good works. The contributors to this volume are a veritable who's who in evangelical circles from the Puritan era to the mid-nineteenth century. The Names are as follows:

JOSEPH HALL - RICHARD SIBBES - JEREMY TAYLOR

ROBERT LEIGHTON - RICHARD BAXTER - JOHN OWEN

WILLIAM BATES - JOHN FLAVEL - STEPHEN CHARNOCK

JOHN BUNYAN - JOHN TILLOTSON - ISAAC BARROW

JOHN HOWE - EZEKIEL HOPKINS - THOMAS KEN

THOMAS COMBER - BENJAMIN JENKS - MATTHEW HENRY

THOMAS WILSON - ISAAC WATTS - THOMAS ADAM

PHILIP DODDRIDGE - JONATHAN EDWARDS - JOHN WESLEY

WILLIAM ROMAINE - ROBERT WALKER - SAMUEL DAVIES

JOHN NEWTON - THOMAS SCOTT - JOHN LOGAN

TIMOTHY DWIGHT - ANDREW FULLER - ROBERT HALL

JOHN MASON - THOMAS CHALMERS - REGINALD HEBER

EDWARD BICKERSTETH - WILLIAM NEVINS - WILLIAM JAY

W.B. Sprague concluded his Introductory Essay with these words: "Among the many excellent works adapted especially to help the Christian in his devotions, this book holds a prominent place. The Compiler seems to have ranged through almost the whole field of devotional literature, and to have gathered up all the brightest gems that came in his way; and so successful has he been that one may open the book at random, as often as he will, and will never find his eye resting upon anything that he can afford to pass over, or that does not supply the elements of rich devotional thought. It is difficult to say which is most to be admired, the Compiler's good judgment and taste, or his extraordinary patience in research, that has brought to us the heavenly thoughts of so many saints and sages. This is truly a beautiful compilation of DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS."

D.A. Harsha, the Editor, said the following in his Preface: "It is more than ten years since the preparation of the present volume was commenced. During all this time, the selection of these beautiful passages has been slowly but steadily carried on. The work was undertaken in connection with the editing of a Library of Christian Authors, embracing Memoirs of Eminent Divines, and their choice works--a series whose preparation is not yet completed. In performing this long and arduous labor, and while carefully perusing the works of our best authors, from the 17th century to the present time, passages in each author, which the editor regarded as among the finest specimens of devotional and practical writing, were selected for the present volume. In this manner have these 'calm and holy thoughts' of those who have shone as stars in the firmament of the Christian Church, been brought together; and it is believed that in the following pages will be found some of the choicest gems of English sacred literature--gems which 'within small compass, and in purest gold, will preserve their lustre for ages.'"

"We sometimes sing the opening lines of Psalm 63 with these words:

'GOD is my great desire, His face I seek the first

To him my heart and soul aspire, For him I thirst.'

This book of devotions by such eminent saints makes it irresistible because the fervent desires of our hearts for GOD Triune must be fed." - Erroll Hulse

"This is sweet food from savory writers. Perfect for the breakfast table, the bedside, the bathroom, red lights, or anywhere else where a minute or two can be redeemed for your soul's nourishment." - Dr. Robert Martin, Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle and Editor of Reformed Baptist Theological Review

"A quick scan of the table of contents makes clear that this book could be referred to as the hall of fame of devotional literature. Theological depth and practical application define the writings of men like John Flavel, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Matthew Henry and the rest of the authors of this book. This book would make a wonderful gift for any occasion of the year. The recipient of such a gift would have a library in one volume of some of the greatest minds in Christian history. This book would be useful in leading family worship because it would expose your family to classic reformed theology in a devotional format. Buy this book in bulk, keep a copy for yourself and pass down the truth by giving your remaining copies away." - Ray Rhodes, Jr. is President of Nourished in the Word Ministries and author of two Solid Ground Books, "Family Worship for the Reformation Season" and "Family Worship for the Christmas Season."

"In a day of time-sensitivity when every minute and hour seems to be at a premium, the leisure our forebears had for reading seems a pipe-dream for most of God's people. What is the solution? We need better stewardship of our time, for starters. But also we need books like this one that distill the riches of eminent divines from the past and give them to us in succinct packages that will stay with us through the day and week.I am glad to see this marvellous collection reprinted by Solid Ground Christian Books." - Dr. Michael Haykin

One book notice said, "A collection of the holiest aspirations of the holiest men."

A PEN DIPPED IN LOVE: Letters from the Heart of John Newton
John Newton

John Newton (1725-1807), converted slave-trader, preacher, and hymn-writer, was one of the most colorful figures in the Evangelical Awakening of the eighteenth century. 'Once an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa', he once wrote for his epitaph, 'by the rich mercy of Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had long labored to destroy.'

It was through his prolific correspondence that Newton fulfilled his distinctive work as 'the letter-writer par excellence of the Evangelical Revival'. His grasp of Scripture and deep personal experience of the 'amazing grace' of God, his many friends (among them, Whitefield, Cowper and Wilberforce), his many and varied trials, his country pastorate, his strong, clear, idiomatic style - all these factors combined to prepare the author of 'How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds', for the exercise of his special gift.

"In few writers are Christian doctrine, experience and practice more happily balanced than in the author of these Letters, and few write with more simplicity, piety and force." - C. H. Spurgeon

"What thousands have derived repeated profit and pleasure from the perusal of these utterances of the heart! Nor ever will they cease to be found means of grace whilst God has a church on earth." - William Jay

"It was Newton's goodness rather than his greatness that rendered him so especially attractive; the abundance of the grace of God that was in him. In this respect he was pre-eminent, justifying the eulogy of William Jay who speaks of him as one of the most perfect instances of the spirit and temper of Christianity he ever knew. Some men excel in one virtue more than another. But Newton's character was beautiful in its entireness. It rested on a solid foundation; the initial Christian grace of humility, and of this grace he was a most striking example. He never for a moment forgot that by the grace of God he was what he was." "This book was given to me by a dear friend 33 years ago this month as I was a student in Seminary. It has had a profound impact upon my life ever since the day it was received. My copy has nearly fallen apart, and many of the letters have been read more than a dozen times. Newton was a man after God's heart, and his letters were written with a pen that was dipped in love.

It is a great honor for Solid Ground to be able to give this book a new chance to touch the hearts of many throughout the world. Once you have completed this Introduction to Newton's Letters you will surely want to attain all his letters as they are published by Banner of Truth. This would be a superb gift to give to a new Christian, a Seminary student, a Christian teacher and even someone who is yet a stranger of God and of grace. Just read the titles and you will want this book." -The Publisher

THE POWER OF FAITH: Exemplified in the Life and Writings of Isabella Graham
Isabella Graham, Edited by Divie & Joanna Bethune

"Here is the moving story of a woman who knew her God. Men and women, young and old, will find inspiration in the life of Isabella Graham. You will have a hard time putting this book down. From her loss of her husband when she was but thirty-one, to her subsequent poverty, to her labors in teaching young women and finding work for the poor, Mrs. Graham exemplified sweet submission and diligent service to the Lord. May God use this book to raise up many other people of similar Christlikeness!" -Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"This a fine book for Christian women of all ages. Isabella Graham began to walk with the Lord in her youth and continued to do so in young adulthood, through the years of middle age, and on into old age, experiencing, along the way, many sorrows and joys as a daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. The record of her journey, in this memoir of her life and writings, is a testimony to the marvelous grace of God. It shows us how he cares for his own, works all things together for their good, and comforts as well as sends grief. Above all, it shows us what great things he can do through a woman who is deeply devoted both to him and to his service." - David Campbell, Pastor of Grace Baptist of Carlisle, PA

"What a delight to become acquainted with Isabella Graham! She was a wise, godly, solid-gold Christian woman, who in the midst of much suffering lived a life of faith in her God." -Sara Leone, author of "Her Husband's Crown" by Banner of Truth

The Power of Faith Exemplified in the Life and Writings of the late Mrs. Isabella Graham

An Introduction to a New Generation by Sara Leone

"Recently an elderly couple in our church gave my husband a number of beautiful old books. Among them I discovered a memoir of Isabella Graham. It has been delightful to become acquainted with Isabella Graham.

As older women are to teach the younger women, Isabella Graham (1742-1814) is one of those Christian women who will be a safe guide for us in our life of faith. I say this because of her evident close walk with the Lord, her saturation in the Word of God, and her constantly pointing others to Christ.

Isabella Graham lived out her faith in the midst of much suffering. Widowed at the age of 31 with three young daughters and a son on the way, she was cast upon the Lord, took hold of God's promises to the widow, and never let go. Mrs. Graham was single-minded throughout her life in her overarching desire and prayer for the salvation of her children and grandchildren. Nothing else mattered but that they knew and loved the Lord. Nothing. 'My only concern and prayer to God for them is, that they may be early taught to love God and serve him. I am equally indifferent what station of life they may occupy, whether they swim in affluence or earn their daily bread' (p. 49). Can we as mothers say the same?

Here was a woman who left her homeland of Scotland for America where she perceived the church of Christ would flourish. Why her determination to move? She desired that her children could be settled there. It was for her children's spiritual good.

Do you know what it is to yearn after a prodigal son? From her own sad experience, she carefully and tenderly offers advice for those suffering the death of a wayward child for whom they had prayed - trust and hope in God.

Isabella Graham knew how to abound and how to suffer loss. At one point in her widowhood, the family was reduced to eating porridge and potatoes. Reflecting on those impoverished days, Isabella Graham later wrote to a friend undergoing suffering, 'O, what sweet meals have I and my children made on hot potatoes, nicely boiled and cracked, with salt - not merely content, but they tasted good and savory. There are peculiar pleasures in a life of that kind. You shall yet sing of it.' (p. 302) In spite of their poverty, she enjoyed peace with God and contentment.

To support her little family, Isabella, who, in God's providence, had been more highly educated than was usual in those days, opened schools for young ladies. She had a tender, loving manner with the young. In later life her former students spoke highly of her godly influence on their lives. Indeed she was 'a mother in Israel' (Judges 5:7).

How does the world remember Isabella Graham? She is remembered as a philanthropist in an age of limited safety nets. A widow herself of modest means, she served as the first directress of the Female Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children, she help start an orphanage and a Bible society, she supported the first missionary society in New York, and she visited the poorest of the poor including newly-arrived immigrant families and female prisoners. Her faith in beginning endeavors with slender means is exemplary. In spite of limited funds, she moved ahead with the projects, trusting the Lord to provide the rest. And He did!

Isabella Graham's biography is interspersed with her own writings either from her devotional exercises ('prayer journal'), or her letters often written to younger friends. Isabella Graham's prayers are soaked in Scripture and evidence a deep hunger for God. Having a strong grasp of orthodox Christianity (her favorite authors were John Owen, William Romaine, and John Newton) she could hold her own against rising liberalism and also faithfully explain biblical doctrine to others. I highly commend to you the reading of this book about Isabella Graham, 'whose faith follow, considering the outcome of [her] conduct.' - Sara Leone

"Tom Nettles was born to be a teacher, called to be a preacher, and trained to be a scholar. He has produced a library of scholarship and has shaped a generation of Baptist ministers and leaders. He has also done what few scholars ever have the opportunity or courage to do - he has reset the terms of debate for an entire denomination of churches. Thanks to Tom Nettles and his influence, there are important truths that are known and now cannot be denied." - From the Foreword, R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky

"These essays are offered in honor of Tom Nettles with full recognition that our Triune God is the One who deserves all praise for his life and ministry. Our Lord is the One who gives 'pastors and teachers to equip the saints for works of ministry' (Ephesians 4:11-12). We thank God for raising Tom up in our day and using him mightily in the effort to defend the authority of Scripture and recover the gospel that it reveals. Our hope is that this book, which addresses subjects that Tom himself has emphasized in his teaching and writing, will also prove useful in showing that all that we are and have is truly by God's grace and for His glory." - From the Introduction, Tom Ascol, Senior Pastor, Grace Baptist Church, Cape Coral, Florida

THE BEAUTY OF THE KING: Sermons for Children on the Riches of the Grace and the Wonders of the Love of Christ
Richard Newton

THIS IS THE RAREST OF ALL THE TITLES OF RICHARD NEWTON, "THE PRINCE OF PREACHERS TO THE YOUNG." NOW AVAILABLE.

"We sometimes see a bright jewel which has many smooth polished sides or surfaces. It is pleasant to take up such a jewel; turn it carefully over; look at its many surfaces, one after another, and notice the different views they present of the beauty shining out from that precious stone.

Now, the character and work of the Lord Jesus Christ, our Blessed Savior, may well be compared to such a jewel. There are many sides to this jewel. And there is a wonderful variety in the rays of light and loveliness, that shine out from these different sides. No two of them are exactly alike. It is an interesting and profitable study to examine this jewel carefully, and see the amazing brightness and beauty that are hid in it, and are all the time shining out from it.

The aim of the present volume is to assist the young in doing this. Their attention is here called to a few of the shining surfaces of this great Jewel. Jesus, in the riches of His grace and the wonders of His love, is the one theme of these sermons.

If the reading of them shall help any of His young friends, in their efforts to know Jesus more, to love and serve Him better, and, in so doing, to be happier and more useful, the writer will feel abundantly rewarded for his labor." - from the Author's Preface

CHRIST IN SONG: Hymns of Immanuel from All Ages
compiled by Philip Schaff

Philip Schaff is best known for his massive "History of the Christian Church". In 1869 Schaff took his love for Christ and the Church and turned his efforts to a compilation of the great hymns of the Church down through the ages. His focus was upon one thing: JESUS CHRIST. Hear his words from the Preface, "Christ is the centre of sacred art as well as of theology and religion... From Him music has drawn its highest inspiration, and Handel transcended himself when he made 'Messiah' his theme. The sweetest lyrics of Zion in all ages celebrate the events of His life and the boundless wealth of mercy and peace that is treasured up in His person and work for every believer. The hymns of JESUS are the Holy of holies in the temple of sacred poetry."

Schaff concludes his Preface with these words: "May He, whose holy name shines on every page, own and bless this labor of love to His own glory and praise, and to the joy and comfort of His people; animating their songs in the house of their pilgrimage, until they adore Him face to face in the chorus of Redemption everlasting."

CHARLES HODGE, great 19th century theologian, said the following about this volume: "After all, apart from the Bible, the best antidote to all these false theories of the person and work of Christ, is such a book as Dr. Schaff's 'CHRIST IN SONG.' The hymns contained in that volume are of all ages and from all churches. They set forth Christ as truly God, as truly man, as one person, as the expiation for our sins, as our intercessor, Savior, and King, as the supreme object of love, as the ultimate ground of confidence, as the all-sufficient portion of the soul. We want no better theology and no better religion than are set forth in these hymns. They were indicted by the Holy Spirit in the sense that the thoughts and feelings which they express, are due to his operations on the hearts of his people."

THE SHORTER CATECHISM ILLUSTRATED: From Christian History and Biography
John Whitecross

"This unusual volume follows the doctrinal structure of the classic Puritan catechism, expanding each doctrinal point not with exposition, as is customary, but with many factual stories well selected by the author from a wide range of sources. Thus such subjects as Providence, Prayer and The Ten Commandments are illuminated with telling and sometimes fascinating narratives. First published in 1828, and passing through many editions in the last century, the book has been revised for greater usefulness today.

SAMPLES:

Matthew Henry, a little before his death, said to a friend, "You have been accustomed to take notice of the sayings of dying men: this is mine, That a life spent in the service of God, and in communion with Him, is the most comfortable and pleasant life that any one can live in this world."

A Polish prince was accustomed to carry the picture of his father always in his bosom; and on particular occasions used to take it out and view it, saying, "Let me do nothing unbecoming so excellent a father." A suitable reflection for a Christian!

The punctuality of John Newton, while tide-surveyor at Liverpool, was particularly remarked. One day, however, some business had detained him, and he came to his boat much later than usual, to the surprise of those who had observed his former punctuality. He went out in the boat as heretofore, to inspect a ship, but by some accident the ship blew up just before he reached it; and it appears, that if he had left the shore a few minutes sooner, he must have perished with the rest on board.

It was remarked by one, 'If I have been honored to do any good in my day; if I have been of any use to the church of Christ, to my family, and to my fellow-creatures; if I have enjoyed any happiness in life (and I am happy to say I have had a large share); if I have any hope beyond the grave, and that hope I would not exchange for a thousand worlds-I owe all to the Bible.'

In the Memoirs of Thomas Boston of Ettrick appears the following: Singing at family worship Psalm 121, this view of the Bible was given me, namely, that whatever were the particular occasions of the writing of it or any part thereof, I am to look upon it as written for me as much as if there were not another person in the world, and so is everybody else to whose hand it comes.'

Sometimes there were more kings than one in Sparta, who governed by joint authority. A king was occasionally sent to some neighbouring senate in the character of a Spartan ambassador. Did he, when so sent, cease to be a king of Sparta, because he was also an ambassador? No; he did not divest himself of his regal dignity, but only added to it that of public deputation. So Christ, in becoming man, did not cease to be God; but though He ever was, and still continued to be, King of the whole creation, He acted as the voluntary servant and messenger of the Father.

Among the many whom George Whitefield was honored to be the means of converting to the knowledge and love of the truth, and who will be a crown of joy to him in the day of the Lord, it is perhaps not generally known that the celebrated James Hervey is to be mentioned. In a letter to Whitefield, Hervey expresses himself thus: 'Your journals, dear sir, and sermons, especially that sweet sermon on What think ye of Christ? were the means of bringing me to the knowledge of the truth.'

David Dickson, once Professor of Divinity in Edinburgh, being asked, when on his deathbed, how he found himself answered, "I have taken my good deeds and bad deeds, and thrown them together in a heap, and fled from them both to Christ, and in Him I have peace."

John Whitecross, a schoolmaster, knew well what would gain the attention of the young and the book can be recommended for children of ten and over; it will also be of general interest to all readers and a valuable treasury of illustrative matter for the many in the home, school or church who have the responsibility of making Biblical teaching interesting.

MOTHERS OF THE WISE AND GOOD: Anecdotes and Essays on the Incredible Influence of Mothers Throughout Church History
Jabez Burns

"This book answers the very questions that today's women are asking. The engaging anecdotes and instructive essays are wonderful. I have looked for a book like this for many years. Every mother, grandmother, and spiritual mother - in others words, every woman - will find great help and hope in this book." - Susan Hunt

This book was written in 1846 to honor the role of a mother. Brief biographical sketches are given of such wise and good men as Augustine, John Newton, Jonathan Edwards and many others with special emphasis upon the way that their mothers were used of God in their lives. Susan Hunt says that this is the book she has been seeking for many years to give young mothers to encourage them in their task. Elisabeth Elliot and Nancy Wilson commend this work very highly.

"It is a useful and valuable work, replete with instruction and encouragement...it deserves to have a wide circulation." - John Angell James

"One of the great helps to the modern church is the reprinting of old books by saints of a previous generation. This book has much to offer us in our day where motherhood is not given the honor it deserves." - Nancy Wilson

"The writer has been powerfully struck by the fact, that there are few good works which are directly adapted to give the information, and supply the help which is needed. Good thoughts and interesting facts on this subject are scattered abroad through the length and breadth of our moral and religious literature; but thus it is almost unavailable to those whose benefit and encouragement should be chiefly aimed at.

The plan designed in this volume has been to furnish within a portable and convenient size, a series of delightful instances of the success of pious maternal influence, interspersed with various striking incidents, both in prose and verse, calculated to interest and improve the mind, and followed by short essays on the various duties and responsibilities of the Christian mother.

To collect and arrange has been the chief duty of the Author, being satisfied that it would have been impossible, for him, at least, to have provided original articles of equal value, and as directly adapted to the end contemplated. That the book may prove instructive, edifying and useful, under God's blessing, to that most numerous, important, and influential class for whom it is chiefly designed, is the earnest and prayerful desire of the Author."- Jabez Burns, March 1846

THE WAY OF FAITH
Phil Newton

How does a person become a Christian? How do you answer this question? Some say that a moral life makes one a Christian. Others declare that joining a church or being baptized makes a person a Christian. Still others call for a person to "make a decision" or "pray the prayer" or "ask Jesus into your heart". While opinions may be important, the one vital think when speaking of one becoming a Christian is what does God say in His Word.

God has given His Word--the Bible--to reveal Himself, His purpose for man, and the way to know Him personally. Everything a person needs to know about becoming a Christian can be found in God's Word. As God gives a person understanding of the gospel (the good news of how God, in Christ, has provided salvation), then that person can come to genuine faith in Jesus Christ and, consequently, become a Christian.

The Way of Faith can help you on the journey to understanding the Christian faith. Each section ends with questions for personal study or group discussions.

About the author

Dr. Phil A. Newton (M. Div., New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, D. Min., Fuller Theological Seminary,) has served as senior pastor at South Woods Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee since 1987. He and his wife, Karen, have five children.

BE STILL MY SOUL: Embracing God's Purpose & Provision in Suffering
Edited by Nancy Guthrie w/ Contributions by Ferguson, Packer, Sproul, Newton etc.

A POWERFUL RESOURCE TO MINISTER TO THOSE IN THE MIDST OF SUFFERING.

Since the beginning of humanity, the question of suffering-why it happens and how God works in it-has existed. What are you doing, God? Why is this happening? Where are you? These questions fill our thoughts when we experience deep pain and tragedy. Having lost two young children who suffered from a rare and incurable disease, editor Nancy Guthrie has put together this helpful collection of short readings exploring the question of suffering.

This anthology includes essays from both classic and contemporary theologians, Bible teachers, and missionaries such as John Calvin, Charles Spurgeon, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, John Piper, Corrie ten Boom, Joni Eareckson Tada, and Helen Roseveare. Each entry expounds on a Bible verse, leading readers to see and be comforted by God's perspective, purpose, and provision in suffering.

HEROES OF THE REFORMATION: Life-Changing Lessons for the Young
Richard Newton

William G. Blaikie wrote the following words about the author of this book on Heroes of the Reformation, "In preaching to the young, Dr. Newton has attained the first rank in this department of work. The American mind has such a proclivity to sharp, terse forms of expression, clever analogies and illustrations, keen analysis of feelings, vivid description and warm coloring, that we do not wonder tghat it should excel in addresses to which such qualities contribute so largely."

C.H. Spurgeon said of this volume: "The records of the Reformation translated into fascinating language for young people, by one who knows how to enthrall youthful ears and hearts. A book which should be read by every boy and girl throughout the empire."

This volume includes brief but very informative sketches on the likes of Wycliffe, Huss, Savonarola, Luther, Melancthon, Tyndale, Edward the Sixth, John Fox, Latimer and Ridley, Cranmer, Knox, Zwingli, Calvin, Farel, Alasco, Gustaus Adolphus and several others.

In the words of the author, "There is nothing more helpful to us, in seeking to serve God, than to try and learn the practical lessons which we find illustrated in the lives of the good and holy men, who have been a blessing to the church and to the world through their faithful labors. The 'Heroes of the Reformation' belong to this class, and these sketches of their noble lives are sent forth in the earnest hope that through God's blessing they may prove useful to the young who are trying to serve him."

HEROES OF THE EARLY CHURCH: Life-Changing Lessons for the Young
Richard Newton

"These graphic sketches of the 'Heroes of the Early Church' are the latest series penned by the distinguished author, whom Spurgeon fittingly called 'The Prince of Children's Preachers.' The sketches are in many respects the best work of the gifted man. As he ripened in saintship for heaven, his literary style became even more rich with the aroma of the gospel, and so more forcible, simple, and crisp, than in his earlier writings." - Edwin W. Rice, from the Preface

These helpful sketches are filled with lessons for the young and old alike on the lives of men like: Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Justin Martyr, Tertullian of Carthage, Origin of Alexandria, Eusebius of Caesarea, Athanasius the Great, Basil the Great, Ambrose of Milan, John Chrysostom, Jerome, Augustine and others.

J.W. Alexander, James Buchanan, R.S. Candlish, Philip Doddridge, Archbishop Robert Leighton, John Newton, Edward Payson, Octavius Winslow

"We live in a world of sin, and hence in a world of sorrow, for 'Man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.' It is the design of this volume to aid in this comforting work." - from Editor's Preface

William Bacon Stevens served as editor of this magnificant volume which is as useful to the pastor as the ones to be comforted. Stevens has included excellent articles by men like James W. THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS: Edited by George Offor, including Bunyan’s own Marginal Notes
JOHN BUNYAN

THIS IS A COMPLETE, UNABRIDGED EDITION CONTAINING THE ORIGINAL MARGINAL NOTES OF JOHN BUNYAN.

Other than the Bible, there is no book written in the English language that has been published more than “The Pilgrims Progress”, by John Bunyan. We believe there are two primary reasons for this. First, the book is thoroughly and eminently Scriptural. But secondly, and just as importantly, it is profoundly practical, being a deeply experiential and spiritual account of the realities of the true Christian call, conversion, walk, opposition, and spiritual rewards, both temporal and eternal; all applied to pilgrims of various gifts and capacities.

The main reason this particular edition of Pilgrims Progress was selected is because the original editor, George Offor, carefully reviewed all eight of Bunyan’s own editions being careful to produce a copy that adhered strictly to Bunyan’s own revisions of the text. But in addition, Offor was also careful to include Bunyan’s Marginal Notes. Bunyan himself provided these notes and insisted that they were one major key to understanding the text, the other being the illuminating work of The Spirit. We have made no changes to Offor’s/Bunyan’s text in this edition. May it be blessed to your soul as it has been to millions before you is our prayer.

Charles H. Spurgeon loved reading and re-reading this work, claiming to have read it over 100 times! Quite often his wife read it to him in the afternoon for relaxation and meditation. He often quoted Bunyan in his sermons declaring, "Though his writings are charmingly full of poetry, yet he cannot give us his Pilgrim's Progress, that sweetest of all prose poems, without continually making us feel and say, 'Why, this man is a living Bible!' Prick him anywhere, his blood is Bibline, the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is full of the Word of God."

George Whitefield said of this book, "It smells of the prison. It was written when the author was confined in Bedford jail. And ministers never write or preach so well as when under the cross: the Spirit of Christ and of Glory then rests upon them."

John Newton added, "Of all our author's writings, there is no one perhaps so universally and deservedly admired as his Pilgrim's Progress, in which he gives a delineation of the Christian life under the idea of a journey or a pilgrimage, from the City of Destruction to the heavenly Jerusalem. In this treatise Bunyan appears not only as a writer well instructed in the mysteries of the kingdom, but a man of real genius."

John Owen once went to hear John Bunyan preach. Charles II, hearing of it, asked the doctor why someone as thoroughly educated as he would want to hear a mere tinker preach. Owen replied, "May it please your Majesty, if I could possess the tinker's abilities to grip men's hearts, I would gladly give in exchange all my learning."

PEBBLES FROM THE BROOK: Sermons to Children Fighting the Good Fight of Faith
Richard Newton

"We all have giants to fight. Every form of sin is such a giant. We can only succeed in this warfare by following David's example. The brook, to which we must go for our pebbles, is the word of God. Every portion of truth from this word is a pebble for our use in this warfare. When Jesus, the Captain of our salvation, went forth into the wilderness, to be tempted of Satan, he was fighting the great father of all the giants. He fought and conquered him with pebbles from this brook. And if we seek the help of God, to enable us to use these pebbles, as our blessed master did, we shall be successful as he was." - from the Author's Preface

The sermons in this volume are as follows:

THE BEST CAPTAIN - Hebrews 2:10

THE BEST OF ALL BLESSINGS - Proverbs 3:15

HOW THE BIRDS PRAISE GOD - Matthew 6:26

THE DAY-SPRING'S VISIT - Luke 1:78

THE GOOD SOLDIER - 2 Timothy 2:3

THE CONQUEROR'S JEWEL - Exodus 28:19

THE WONDERFUL EYES - Proverbs 15:3

BIBLE JEWELS and Lessons Taught by Them for Children
Richard Newton

"Natural jewels are so valuable that many of us can never afford to buy them. Nor is this necessary, for we can be happy without them. But these BIBLE JEWELS are a thousand times more valuable, and without them we cannot be happy. Yet valuable as they are, the poorest person who reads this book, whether young or old, may become the owner of all the Bible jewels of which it speaks. And this is the reason why this book was written. The hope and prayer of the writer is that everyone who reads these pages may try to get all these precious Bible jewels." - from the Author's Preface

BIBLE MODELS: The Shining Lights of Scripture Applied to Children
Richard Newton

"Our dear Father in heaven has filled His blessed book - the Bible - with interesting histories of the lives and characters of great and good men who have been His servants and followers from the beginning of the world; so that we, who live in these later times, may learn of their thoughts and actions and be made better by them. The Apostle James shows us the use God intends we shall make of these histories, when he says: 'Take, my brethren, the prophets for an example.' This means we should study the lives of the holy men of whom we read in the Bible, until we get the model points of their character impressed upon our minds; and then by the grace of God we may be able to bring these virtues forth again in our own hearts and lives.

"The author of this book has endeavored to place before young readers, in a clear and forcible manner, the admirable traits of character possessed by some of the great men of the Bible. The advantages to be gained by following these BIBLE MODELS are plainly shown by many interesting stories drawn from actual life. It is hoped that not only young, but older persons also will find pleasure as well as profit in the pages of this volume; and that, perhaps, as they become familiar with the lofty examples held up to their gaze, their hearts will go out in earnest prayer that 'God may give them grace to follow His blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, so they may come to the unspeakable joys which he has prepared for those who unfeignedly love Him.'" - from the Author's Preface

ABEL, THE MODEL SPEAKER - Hebrews 11:4

ENOCH, THE MODEL WALKER - Genesis 5:22

NOAH, THE MODEL WORKER - Genesis 6:22

JOB, THE MODEL OF PIETY - Job 1:1

ABRAHAM, THE MODEL OF FAITH - Romans 4:3

JOSEPH, THE MODEL REALIZER OF GOD'S PRESENCE - Genesis 39:9

MOSES, THE MODEL OF FAITHFULNESS - Hebrews 3:2

SAMUEL, THE MODEL OF EARLY PIETY - 1 Samuel 3:10

DAVID, THE MODEL OF PRAISE - Psalm 119:164

DAVID, THE MODEL USER OF GOD'S WORD - Psalm 119:97

JONATHAN, THE MODEL FRIEND - 2 Samuel 1:26

ELIJAH, THE MODEL REFORMER - 1 Kings 17:1

ELISHA, THE MODEL HELPER - 2 Kings 13:14

EBED-MELECH, THE MODEL OF KINDNESS - Jeremiah 38:8

NEHEMIAH, THE MODEL MAN OF BUSINESS - Nehemiah 6:3

DANIEL, THE MODEL OF DECISION - Daniel 10:11

JOHN THE BAPTIST, THE MODEL OF GREATNESS - Luke 1:15

THE APOSTLE PAUL, THE MODEL OF EARNESTNESS - Philippians 3:14

JESUS, THE MODEL OF PERFECTION - Hebrews 5:9

"This book, having been written by such a distinguished author, containing his best thoughts and most interesting experiences, could hardly fail to be a valuable and meritorious work."

-This beautiful volume is enhanced by the Author's Preface being in the very handwrioting of the beloved Dr. Newton.

LEAVES FROM THE TREE OF LIFE: Sermons for Children on the Truths about Jesus that Heal the Soul
Richard Newton

"This book has much to say about healing. And to souls diseased by sin, as ours are, this is a matter of the greatest importance. We see its importance when we remember that one of the sweet names by which our blessed Savior is spoken of in the Old Testament is JEHOVAH-ROPHI, or 'The Lord who healeth.' The chief means that He makes use of in healing souls is the truth about Jesus, of which the Bible tells us. 'He sent His word, and healed them,' says David. It is more than 20 years ago since the writer of this book first engaged in the work of preaching to children, and making books of sermons. He was first led to do this by thinking on the words of Jesus to Peter, 'Lovest Thou me? Feed my lambs.' This is the twelfth volume he has been permitted to publish. This new volume is now sent forth as an expression of the writer's cordial love to the lambs of Jesus everywhere." - from the Author's Preface

Subjects covered are as follows:

THE BIBLE COMPARED TO A TREE OF LIFE - Revelation 22:2

THE LESSON OF OBEDIENCE - Luke 2:51

THE LEAF FOR CURING LYING - Psalm 120:2

THE LEAF FOR CURING COVETOUSNESS - Proverbs 3:9,10

THE LESSON OF PATIENCE - James 1:4

THE LEAF FOR HEALING IDLENESS - Ecclesiastes 9:10

THE LEAF FOR CURING PRIDE - James 4:6

THE LEAF FOR HEALING THE EVIL CONSCIENCE - Hebrews 10:22

"Light at Evening Time is a practical handbook that provides biblical counsel on virtually every area that concerns the elderly. Written by the cream of our church fathers and Reformed forebears, this book is an outstanding collection of treasures for those facing the challenges of senior years. This Large Print Volume contains more than 100 contiributions (all quite brief) from dozens of godly authors including; Augustine, Thomas Adams, J.W. That is the gracious Savior, who visited this world for its full redemption, and who gave to its fallen, wandering ones the infallible assurance that whosoever 'followeth him shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.' Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, and the Lord of man, is the one living, adequate, glorious light on earth, for the aged and the young." -from the Introduction by Stephen H. Tyng, June 1873

(2) DEVOTED TO GOD'S CHURCH: Core Values for Christian Fellowship

Being a Christian is not an individualistic or isolated activity. Believing also involves belonging. Being a Christian, by definition, involves belonging to the church.

This is not a book full of ideas about how your church ought to change or what it needs to do in order to grow or to be successful. Rather it is about how we fit into our own church. There are hallmarks of church life that should be stamped on all our churches because they are applicable everywhere and anywhere — New Testament values for any size of church, in any part of the world, at any time.

Devoted to God’s Church will serve to help new Christians understand what it is to be part of a church, and will also be a refreshing reminder to every Christian of what it should look like to belong to the family of God.

ENDORESEMENT

‘Many people “go to church.” Sinclair Ferguson, with his typical gentleness and wisdom, teaches us how to ‘be the church’ as Christ defines it. This simple, clear, and moving book will be great help for people interested in learning more about becoming members of a church. It is also a good tool for those who wish to inject fresh zeal and joy into the membership they already possess.’ — JOEL BEEKE

(3) THE CHRISTIAN LIFE: A Doctrinal Introduction

Theology that is ‘practical, applying Bible teaching with insight and wisdom to the condition of plain people. Christian beginners will get the benefit and the Lord’s older sheep, grown tough and stringy maybe, will find themselves edified and perhaps tenderised too’. — J.I. PACKER

Christian doctrine matters for Christian living. This is ‘one of the most important growth points of the Christian life’, writes Sinclair B. Ferguson. From this starting point, The Christian Life expounds such key biblical themes as grace, faith, repentance, new birth and assurance with clarity and contagious enthusiasm. ‘Christian doctrines are life-shaping’, explains the author, because ‘they show us the God we worship’. Widely used and appreciated since its first appearance, The Christian Life not only expounds the teaching of Scripture, but outlines its meaning for practical Christian living.

NATURE'S WONDERS: Sermons to Children on How God's Works Praise Him
Richard Newton

"This volume is sent forth as an experiment. It goes but a little way into the great department to which it refers. It only presents a few flowers, gathered as specimens from God's great garden. These sermons have cost me more labor than any I have yet published for the young. I trust, however, they may be of service in helping the young to 'look through nature up to nature's God,' and in showing them that the God who speaks so lovingly to us in the Bible is the same God whose wisdom, power and goodness are so wonderfully displayed in the sun, moon, stars, clouds, mountains, seas, rivers, trees, flowers, and other glorioius works around us." - from the Author's Preface

HOW GOD'S WORKS PRAISE HIM - Psalm 145:10

HOW THE SUN PRAISES GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE MOON PRAISES GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE STARS PRAISE GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE STARS PRAISE GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE LIGHT PRAISES GOD - Psalm 148:3

HOW THE AIR PRAISES GOD - Psalm 150:1

HOW THE CLOUDS PRAISE GOD - Exodus 16:10

HOW THE TREES PRAISE GOD - Isaiah 55:12

HOW THE FLOWERS PRAISE GOD - Matthew 6:28

"These volumes abound in religious instruction suitable to young persons, and are presented in a form excellently calculated to engage attention." - The Bookseller

"These bright sermons, studded with anecdote, will gain a loving hearing from the little people." - British Messenger

"Ministers, Sabbath-school teachers, and those who address children's churches, will find much material to help them in the difficult work of presenting religious truth in a form attractive to the young." - United Presbyterian Record

BIBLE WONDERS: Sermons to Childen on the Wondrous Things of Scripture
Richard Newton

"The world is full of wonders, if only we had eyes to see them. But there are more wonders in the Bible, and greater wonders, too, then are to be found anywhere else. There are wonders of wisdom here, and wonders of love, and wonders of power, and wonders of goodness that are perfectly surprising. But we need the help of God to enable us to see these wonders. And this is just the help David was trying to get when he offered the prayer, 'Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.' Psalm 119:18. The attempt has been made in this book to speak of a few of these wonders, in the hope that some who read it may be lead to study the Bible with more interest, and try with increasing earnestness to find out more of the wonderful things contained in it." - from the Author's Preface

The "Prince of Preachers to Children" once again opens the Scriptures in a way that will both instruct and entertain everyone who reads it. The subjects include:

"THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL"

"HIS NAME SHALL BE CALLED WONDERFUL"

"THERE IS A GOD IN HEAVEN THAT REVEALETH SECRETS"

"I AM THE LIVING BREAD WHICH CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN"

"YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN"

"THE GOLD OF THAT LAND IS GOOD"

"WHATSOEVER YE SHALL ASK THE FATHER IN MY NAME, HE WILL GIVE IT TO YOU."

THE MISCELLANEOUS WORKS OF PHILIP DODDRIDGE (TWO VERY LARGE HARDCOVER VOLUMES)

Philip Doddridge – (1702-1751), Non-conformist and hymn-writer

Eighteenth century England produced many excellent hymnwriters whose hymns are still sung today – Isaac Watts, Charles Wesley, and the Puritan Philip Doddridge, who died on October 26, 1751.

Philip Doddridge was born in London, England on June 26, 1702, the youngest of twenty children. His health was so poor when he was born he was not expected to live, and Philip continued to be plagued by ill health all of his life. His parents died when he was a boy, but he was cared for by friends of the family. Recognizing Doddridge’s intellectual abilities, one benefactress offered to pay Philip’s studies at Cambridge. Philip rejected the offer, however, because he could not accept the tenets of the Anglican church. He went to a non-conforming seminary instead and became an evangelical, independent church leader.

At twenty-seven Doddridge began to pastor the Castle Hill congregational chapel in Northampton, England. He was to continue there for the next twenty-two years. While in Northampton Doddridge offered a theological training school to prepare young men for ministry in independent churches. Over the years Doddridge taught about 200 men, conducting classes in Hebrew, Greek, math, philosophy, Bible, and theology. Because of his many accomplishments, the University of Aberdeen conferred a Doctor of Divinity degree upon Doddridge in 1736.

Doddridge was a prolific writer. His The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul was translated into seven languages. Reading this book led William Wilberforce, foe of slavery, to become a Christian. Besides a New Testament commentary and other theological works, Doddridge also wrote over 400 hymns. Most of the hymns were written as summaries of his sermons and were to help the congregation express their response to the truths they were being taught. None of these hymns were published in Philip’s own lifetime, although they circulated in manuscript copies.

At forty-eight, at the height of his ministry, Doddridge was dying of tuberculosis. Friends collected money to send him to Portugal where it was hoped warm air and sunshine might cure him; but it was too late. Philip Doddridge died on October 26, 1751 and is buried in the English cemetery in Lisbon. After his death a friend collected many of his hymns and had them published. Several still appear in today’s hymnals, including “Grace! Tis a Charming Sound” and “O Happy Day”. The latter is probably Doddridge’s most famous hymn. Based on II Chronicles 15:15, the hymn expressed the joy of a personal relationship with God. Doddridge himself titled the hymn “Rejoicing in our Covenant Engagement to God”. Baptists and Methodists often use the hymn at dedication services for Christian baptism, while British royalty have used it at the confirmation services for court children.

INDEX (1255-1259)

"Practical Discourses on Regeneration are among the most vital wants of this age. Although for the last century much has been written on this great doctrine, nothing has fallen under our observation so popular, so plain, so scriptural, and so practical, as this production of Dr. Doddridge. The sermons were preached in 1741, during the period known as 'The Great Awakening' under the labors of Whitefield, Edwards, and others. And what was the GREAT DOCTRINE, which above all others was made prominent in the preaching of that time of God's power? What but this very Doctrine of REGENERATION, to the discussion of which these pages are so wisely and so warmly devoted." - J. Newton Brown, from Introduction to 1854 edition

"The doctrine of the New Birth is one of the jewels in the crown of Christ's gospel. It is also our great protection against formalism which makes too much of sacraments and too little of heart religion. Excessive emphasis on the covenant and on Baptism are reappearing here and there as in the past. This fine work by Doddridge is a welcome reminder that without a spiritual rebirth no one is a true Christian". - Maurice Roberts

"Increasingly recognized as a significant figure of the eighteenth-century revival, Philip Doddridge played an important role in bringing renewal to English Congregationalism. In part this was because of his determination to work with evangelical, God-fearing men of differing ecclesial persuasions, men such as the Anglican Calvinist George Whitefield. In part, it was also due to the way he modelled true gospel preaching that was pre-eminently Christ-centered. The sermons in this new reprint serve as an excellent introduction to this kind of preaching--a type of preaching desperately needed today in North America."-Michael A G Haykin

LECTURES ON THE HISTORY OF PREACHING
John A. Broadus

John A. Broadus (1827-1895) delivered these five lectures in May of 1876 at Newton Theological Institute near Boston, and they immediately caused a stir of interest for their publication. It was lectures like these which later moved his student E.C. Dargan to desire to spend his life studying the history of preaching. This eventually led Dargan to write his two volume massive work on "A History of Preaching" (recently published by Solid Ground).

Lecture 1: Specimens of Preaching in the Bible

Lecture 2: Preaching in the Early Christian Centuries

Lecture 3: Medieval and Reformation Preaching

Lecture 4: The Great French Preachers

Lecture 5: The English Pulpit

"This volume covers a most neglected field, and handles the subject with great skill." A.T. Robertson
